The Josh Duggar child sexual abuse material (CSAM) trial is now within 2 weeks of its start date. This is a federal case. There was a hearing today on whether two witnesses would be admitted who would speak to Josh’s propensity to sexually molesting children. The judge took this under advisement and will hold a separate hearing on Monday, November 29. Jury selection in the trial is expected to start on Tuesday, November 30.

nwahomepage.com

This is a completely disgusting case and could have been avoided had Josh Duggar’s parents, Jim Bob and Michelle, turned him in for molesting four of his younger sisters back in the ’00s.

Oh yeah, Josh and his wife Anna (I am awful I wanted to call her Joshleen) named their most recent child (born late last month) Madyson Lily Duggar. Of all the “M” names to pick! Remember, Josh Duggar’s slide into irrelevance started when he was part of the Ashley *Madison* hack.

Kevin McCarthy just slammed the child tax credit, saying the $300 per kid per month will worsen the labor shortage

Kevin McCarthy’s theory of labor relations is based on starving the desperate peasants.

Re McCathy: Did the Democrats pull a similar stunt when the Republicans passed their tax cut for the rich? Other than delaying the vote and providing video snippets for Faux does this harangue accomplish anything worthwhile for the base, or is just something to extract more money from the rubes and the donors?

Sigh, the loss of film

I know that the UK spinoff from Kodak, called Kodak_____ (I forget the rest of the name and am too lazy to google it right now) still makes some films, but only a small selection of the old product line.

Few new photographers today even had experience with film. Or why film is still preferable to digital in some instances.

Sort of like kids today never having experienced cathode ray tubes. I learned as a kid how magnets can affect TV images, or how the TV image was composed of tiny little dots or bars (Sony). Holding up a magnet or magnifying glass to the front of a CRT teaches one about how the real world works.

There will always be hobbyists. But supplies will always be difficult to find going forward.

Sure, if you live in a major urban area you might find a local camera store stock a few film supplies, but developing and printing one’s one silver photography requires lots of stuff. A darkroom is needed, and even if one converts a bathroom there is still a ton of stuff needed.

Even here in Kodakville, it’s a challenge. The best local camera store in town is on the verge of selling off its building, with the site about to become a Taco Bell.

It’s worrisome, but we’re all hoping they find a way to survive.

freestylephoto.biz sells everything you need and it’s not too expensive.

A daylight safe tank and changing bag.
Basic chemicals. Diafine is great for home development.
Scanner to scan 35mm into your computer to adjust like digital.

No need for a dark room with that kind of hybrid system. I’ve done it. I find my digital Leica to be far more fun and easy to deal with.

Now - IF you’re serious about old school printing, then, yes, you need an enlarger and a darkroom. But usually by then you see people getting into serious retro too - wet glass plates, daguerreotype, platinum prints, etc.

If I were rich, I’d own an 8x10 camera, a Cooke Triple lens and do contact prints for art galleries. I’m not _that_ rich though so I only use a Leica.

Digital will never equal the texture of film, but it’s getting better. Yet, it’s a lot easier and cheaper to use. I had a darkroom when I was younger, and I loved working in it. But I can make photos of near-equal quality at a fraction of the cost and time with digital, so it’s a no-brainer to me.

I gave up on silver more than 10 years ago, 50 years after I bought my first good camera. I bought a used digital a couple weeks ago. The lens from my old Canonflex R and all my other glass will adapt to the T6i, but at some cost of resolution. I’m skulking the auction sites for great ancient lenses that will adapt without “correcting” adapters.

Digital is an entirely new world to learn.

re: #108 The GOP is a terrorist organization

Digital will never equal the texture of film, but it’s getting better. Yet, it’s a lot easier and cheaper to use. I had a darkroom when I was younger, and I loved working in it. But I can make photos of near-equal quality at a fraction of the cost and time with digital, so it’s a no-brainer to me.

I owned a film Leica (IIIf & CL) in the past and was a film bigot for a very long time. I have a digital Leica ( M Type 240) now doing 25mp. I doubt anyone can tell which was taken on which. Back when I bought my first 6mp digital? Or even my 12mp Olympus? Yeah, especially with certain artifacts and in the greyscale conversion. Now though? The difference is more that of difference between oil paint and film - different art forms for achieving similar but not the same goals. As I mentioned above if I were rich (and I do mean rich because the material costs are so high) I’d be happy to buy an 8x10 view camera and do artsy-fartsy contact prints like Weston or Adams. But I know St Ansel would have snarfed the first Nikon D1 and never looked back (given his experimentation and use of any camera he could get his hands on).

I have an old Century Graphic 4x5 that I hacked the front standard into proper movements though still none in the back. But sheet film is expensive and a real pain to develop these days. I miss it though because the glass I have for it is glorious.

The east german 5x7 is more of a piece of art than anything.

re: #115 William Lewis

Yes, sheet film looks to be quite expensive, at least on the B&H website.

I don’t have any way of developing film anymore. Used to have access to a lab.

My favorite size is 6x7cm (roll film) like on the Pentax 67. Miss those cameras.

Sheet film looks gorgeous, but I find that handling them is too much for me.

Camera movements are the key to so much, and almost no one who has never used a view camera really knows what they are about.

If only a camera corporation could make an affordable digital back for view cameras. Making a large digital sensor is inherently very expensive as the reject rate at the fabrication stage of the chip will be high.

So Amazon dropped the first three episodes of Wheel of Time.

I’ll go check it out and see if I like it. Bet I’ll be put off by it, but there is a chance I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

I’m kind of done with the whole fantasy genre. Peter Jackson set a high bar for a fantasy adaptation. Too much of the lesser fantasy shows are very juvenile (see the no end of cheap fantasy shows on American cable channels the past 3 decades), often being nothing but a pretense for unbridled teenage erotic angst.

Pastor Defends Church Event That Led to Covid Outbreak: I Did What God Wanted (Friendly Atheist)

Three people died. He justifies it because “one young woman was saved.”

His church defied a local health order in Nova Scotia on large gatherings.

A woman in Amherst, N.S., has died of COVID-19 following an outbreak at the group home where she lived. Her death is one of three now linked to a recent religious gathering that failed to follow public health guidelines.

Victoria Harrison, known to family and friends as Vicki, died Nov. 10, one week after testing positive for COVID-19, her niece Nancy Trenholm told CBC News.

“We’re mad, we’re frustrated,” said Trenholm.

Harrison was fully vaccinated against COVID-19, but Trenholm said her 64-year-old aunt was not in good health. Trenholm said she’s angry with people who have chosen to not get vaccinated, who account for more than 85 per cent of cases in Nova Scotia over the past six months.

The church yanked the sermon off social media three days after the assertion that “it’s all good because we ‘saved’ a young woman.”

I’m not sure why anyone who is not “saved” in the Evangelical sense would go to a three-day Christian event in the first place, and they didn’t name or show who she is.

Pulling down the video to my mind goes to consciousness of guilt. Most Christian apologists on YouTube and such just block comments.

More interesting ways to remove Democrats from office:

A Democratic single mother on the Omaha Public School board lived in a rented house.

The city cited too many code violations by the landlord and prohibited him from renting it.

In Omaha’s eviction court, an appeal by the renter was rejected, and she was made homeless along with her two children. She is now living out of a car, which is not legal for holding office. She was forced off the school board.

The board will now meet to appoint her Republican replacement.

Honestly speaking, there are a lot of hurting people in the world, and Christianity - or religion in general, really - tries to offer some hope that pain is temporary and that there’s something better in our future. Decoding some of the records of this vanished race they found out the aliens had conclusively and scientifically proven the existence of life after death and then built millions of suicide booths to kill themselves.

Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) told his colleagues this week top party donors were “furious” with the number of Republicans — including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell — who voted for the bipartisan infrastructure bill, Axios reports.

The donors complained to Scott it was foolish for any member of their party to help deliver a win to President Biden.

the problem with the R’s in a nutshell
they have lost the meaning of governing (yes they had it once)

they blew right past “ideological narcissism” - which wouldnt have been a great place to stop - the belief that no decent, honest, and caring person could possibly come to a different conclusion on public policy issues than WE, who after all are a paragon of virtue, tolerance, caring, and wisdom.

even that would require recognition that people exist.
they no longer see see public service or constituents or the country.

they have settled on a degenerative, brutal struggle for power because they only see ‘winning’ and ‘losing’

I left my entire LP collection in the ‘States when I emigrated to Europe in 1988, that is about when CD’s were starting to come out and I figured I would just start from scratch, so to speak, as most of my collection was in pretty dismal shape anyways from owning cheap turntables with shitty needles.

The first CD I bought was Abba “Gold” in 1984. That was fookin’ expensive back then.

I had a Radio Shack CD player I also bought which cost about $800, which would play one CD and was programmable!

When I was transferred from Spain to Florida, the only thing missing in my household shipment was an $800 Audio-Techinca cartridge for my Pioneer turntable. When the turntable was unpacked, the cartridge was missing.

The insurance company had some difficulty believing that was the case, but they eventually paid me for the missing cartridge.

Duterte’s spiritual adviser Quiboloy charged with sex trafficking in US (CNN)

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 19) — United States prosecutors have filed sex trafficking charges against Apollo Quiboloy, megachurch leader and President Rodrigo Duterte’s spiritual adviser, for coercing underaged girls and young women to have sex with him under threats of “eternal damnation.”

The US Department of Justice on Thursday announced the indictment of Quiboloy as the founder of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ, The Name Above Every Name (KOJC). The “international administrator” of KOJC in the US Teresita Tolibas Dandan and one-time top administrator Helen Panilag were also charged.

The top three church officials remain at-large. The US Justice department said in a statement that the defendants are believed to be in Davao City, the turf of the Duterte family.

US officials also arrested Felina Salinas, Maria de Leon, and Bettina Padilla Roces on Thursday and the three were expected to make their initial appearances on the same day in United States District Court in Los Angeles and Honolulu.

The live-action remake of the beloved anime series, starring John Cho, doesn’t seem to understand what made the original so great.

The OG Cowboy Bebop blasted its premise across its infectious theme: “The work, which becomes a new genre itself, will be called Cowboy Bebop.” And the anime series’ conceit consisted of wrapping popular genre motifs in a 26-minute package. One week, it was a mechanized Space Warrior’s delight; the next, an achingly personal drama, blaxploitation romp, gun-slinging Western, or certified kung-fu flick. The dark, universe-spanning neo-noir followed a trio of bounty hunters—Spike, Jet and Faye—as they hurtle toward their next big score while attempting to outrun their pasts on their spaceship, The Bebop. Its crisp animation, crackling soundtrack, stylized aesthetic and unpredictable world endeared it to fans across the West, making Cowboy Bebop one of the most popular animes of all time.

In the minds of most anime fans, a live-action remake simply cannot recreate the spirit of the medium. Between the by-the-panel approach of the Rurouni Kenshin Netflix films or the very strange, very bad Dragon Ball and Ghost in the Shell remakes, no adaptation can seem to get the formula right. Unfortunately for Cowboy Bebop, fans will continue their search for an adequate remix. André Nemec’s new Netflix series, which stretches each episode to 40-plus minutes, doesn’t really know what to do with more resources and time. Its performances signal that the cast doesn’t appear to grasp the pull of the source material, opting instead for lame slapstick humor and cornball lines (the script is woefully deficient). Cowboy Bebop gets some of the style parts right: the show’s kung-fu scenes, snappy scene-setting, and over-the-top imagery can prove compelling. But where it falters, fatally, is in its misunderstanding of the kind of show Cowboy Bebop is. This isn’t just an issue of translation from one creative medium to another, but rather a complete misreading, transforming a gripping space saga into something utterly childish.

What centered its universe and plot was an overwhelming sense of melancholy. No matter how loudly their ship’s machine guns rang out, how many sly grins Spike would crack at women and nemeses alike, the original was never a show that felt like everything would work out. These characters have been through the wringer, and they acted like it. The series takes place in 2071, 50 years after a catastrophe leaves Earth uninhabitable and the reality of human uprootedness permeates every seam. Ships guided by lonely pilots careen through space, pining for their next meal, a casino to gamble away their last Woolong or bar fight with a stranger, if only to feel some sense of connection. Spike’s exile from his last gang, the mystery behind Jet’s cybernetic arm and police force past, and Faye’s strange post-cryogenic amnesia have left them both physically and psychologically scarred—unable to truly relate with others because they know how finite the world is.

The myth that vaccinations are supposed to work for life is largely based on the fact that most of what we’re being vaccinated against are diseases that primarily affect children. By the time we’re adults, we don’t need the extremely high immune response of a fresh vaccination, because the disease has a low probability of affecting us by that point. This is more akin to the seasonal flu, which we DO have a vaccine for, every single year (mostly due to its rapid mutation rate). And there are periodic vaccinations that are supposed to be administered for other things, such as tetanus, on a less frequent basis.

So, for reasons that I wont get into at this time, I was up at 4am last night, which means I got to catch the lunar eclipse here in northern NJ. It was quite spectacular and was glad to have caught it, even though I didn’t get as much sleep as I would have liked.

I just had my 2nd shingles shot yesterday. Yes, you need two. Hurts like hell, but no regrets. My dad got shingles, I’ve never seen him suffer or complain until he got shingles. Recommended for those 50 plus. Dr. said they believe the two shots are good until death.

My wife and I got ours a couple years ago after they first came out. I was sick as hell for several days (same as with the Moderna vaccines and booster).

Still, I’d rather have a few days of miserable from vaccines than a lifetime of regret from disease.

PDF of House resolution regarding “Magic Minute” speeches

tl/dr: allows the majority and minority leaders to speak for as long as they wish at the end of a debate on the floor.

McCarthy beat Pelosi’s previous record-setting “Magic Minute” speech from 2018.

Pelosi invokes rarely-used ‘magic minute’ to oppose budget deal, elevate Dreamers (Think Progress, February 7, 2018)

With a rare “both-sides” argument from me, if I’m going to fault McCarthy for this, I would have to fault Pelosi as well.

UPDATE: House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has set a new record for the longest continuous speech since at least 1909 in the House of Representatives. She held the floor uninterrupted from 10 a.m. this morning until shortly after 6 p.m — more than eight hours.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) delivered a multi-hour address to her congressional colleagues on Wednesday, in an effort to oppose a two-year bipartisan budget deal struck by Senate leaders hours earlier. The bill notably excluded any mention of or protections for hundreds of thousands of “Dreamers,” undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children.

Beginning at 10:04 a.m. Eastern Time, the senior Democratic House leader used a special privilege called the “magic minute,” which is afforded to party leaders in the House of Representatives and allows them to speak at length without having to filibuster. For more than eight hours, Pelosi stood and read the stories of various Dreamers and recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

McCarthy just lied about every aspect of the bill, and did it in the dead of night hoping to delay long enough to get the vote done overnight (they waited until morning).

my go to: electoral-vote.com

However, the Democrats have the stronger side of the argument, though with their usual bad luck that their side is much more complicated and so is harder to explain to voters. The bill, as currently written, has $80 billion in it for the IRS to more aggressively enforce the tax code. However, the CBO disagrees with the White House as to how much additional revenue that will generate. The CBO thinks that tax cheats will find new and innovative ways to cheat, with the result being that the $80 billion will return $207 billion in additional tax revenue. The White House thinks that the additional revenue will be more like $400 billion.

That’s a difference of nearly $200 billion, and while the White House is likely too optimistic, the CBO is likely too pessimistic. Further, and rather significantly, the CBO included the $80 billion outlay in its figuring but did not include the $207 billion in new revenue. That means that even if the CBO’s more pessimistic figure is correct, the actual amount added to the deficit would be $160 billion… over 10 years. $16 billion per year is pretty much a rounding error when it comes to the federal budget and, again, it could end up being less than that. By way of comparison, the CBO estimated that the Republicans’ tax cut would add roughly $146 billion per year to the deficit (a figure that has proven to be low, thus far). So, Democrats are in a position to respond to Republican complaints about creeping socialism by asking “Oh, you mean our bill that added about 10% as much to the deficit as your tax cut?

OK: First, the usual DISCLAIMER about relying on random (even if well-meaning and sympathetic) Internet acquaintances for medical advice…

If the bronchial symptoms have abated, what it sounds like (to my medically untutored mind) is what used to be called a “stomach flu” - though I’m sure that there is some fancy Latinate term an MD would use - the lack of bronchial suffering and the negative COVID tests seem positive on that count, but it definitely sounds like the Family Anon have all got the same sort of “bug”. Which, if COVID is ruled out, means (IMWAGO) some sort of intestinal flu (?).
Though the “out of breath” issue seems anomalous. If you can’t make it to a doctor in person, telemedicine might be the best alternative for now: they will be able to give you a better analysis than I (Duh!!!!)

For those who are getting vaccinated, this is sensible next step. For the antivaxxers, they see this as proof vaccines don’t work, even though most vaccines usually get boosters because immunity wanes over time.

I plan on getting the booster when I’m at my six month point.

It is becoming increasingly clear that there is no way to escape getting covid if you are an idiot who will not get vaccinated. This will be circulating round and round in waves until everyone is exposed at some time in their life, the question is “Do you fell lucky, punk?” and the answer is the same - what happens is up to you. Get fully vaccinated, whatever the guidance based on the best evidence is.

I think it’s under appreciated that you can get re-infected by covid. Having the bug will not stop you from getting it again 12 or so months down the line. We’ve seen re-infections out in the wild, and we see re-infection for coronaviruses in general.

Again, it goes back to people thinking that once they’ve had the disease, they’re immune for life. The media haven’t really reported on reinfections, but it seems obvious to me, on the face of it, that there is an appreciably large subset of the unvaccinated community that got sick in 2020 from the original variant, and is now getting sick again in 2021 from the Delta variant. I would love to see some statistics on this, because I’m guessing it’s not insignificant.

It’s not a complete crap shoot; B-cell and T-cell response is going to help the body, but they’re no guarantee against serious illness. And you will still spread.

I would love to see some statistics on this, because I’m guessing it’s not insignificant.

people think they’re smarter that the professionals

Some diseases, like the measles, infect us once and usually grant us immunity for life. For others, like the flu, we have to get vaccinated year after year.

So why do we develop lifelong immunity to some diseases but not others? And where does the novel coronavirus fit into all this?

Similarly, shingles is a disease adults can get when the immune response to the chicken pox virus has faded. Which is why there’s a vaccine for it that’s administered to adults. I had chicken pox as a kid, as the kid’s vaccine was then extremely new. I’ll probably be making sure to get the shingles vaccine when I get to be of the age when it is recommended (the US FDA currently recommends it for adults aged 60+).

If you had chicken pox, the virus lies inactive in your body and can be triggered by stress or a weakened immune system. Apparently if you had the chicken pox vaccine, your odds of getting shingles are significantly reduced by 78%, but it’s still possible.

Pelosi did it for principled reasons and in the light of day.
McCarthy just lied about every aspect of the bill, and did it in the dead of night hoping to delay long enough to get the vote done overnight (they waited until morning).

Once again, McCarthy shows he is an awful tactician and Pelosi schools him at every turn. It’s also good to have facts and reality on your side.

McCarthy is handicapped: he is the House leader of a party led by a vindictive racist, whose only goals are demeaning the poor and people of color, enriching the wealthy, and promoting alternative “facts”, that have no relationship to the truth. To retain power, McCarthy must kowtow to that leader and so is unable to use his position to espouse ideas and programs that help our nation.

Democrats blurred out the presidential seal in a video with Kamala Harris to avoid misusing it in material that was not official government business. The rule-following move was rewarded with new conspiracy theories about how Biden isn’t really president!

If they had not blurred it out, there would have been theories as well that Biden is no longer President, that he has been replaced by a lizard android and Kamala the Chameleon Lady is now running America from the comfort of her favorite stick.

“Could the whole thing still fall apart? Sure. The House shouldn’t be a problem; after having voted yes on Friday (and in preliminary votes even earlier) there’s little incentive to kill the bill when it returns. But all it takes is a single Democratic senator to bring everything down. Still, it does seem unlikely that events would have reached this stage without some confidence that Manchin and Sinema would be on board, and one would imagine that those senators would have given more of an indication long before now if they intended to oppose final passage. Which gets back to the point about shared incentives: Even as both Manchin and Sinema have strong electoral incentives to establish themselves as clearly more moderate than the party, they also have incentives for the party to thrive overall.”

“So it sure looks likely that some version of Build Back Better, modified by the Senate, will wind up passing. And if that happens, this will have been (for better or worse) one of the most productive Congresses in a long time. With one year remaining to do more.”

re: #424 darthstar

The next Rittenhouse will be charging into the crowd shouting ‘SELF DEFENSE’ with guns a-blazing.

I mean, the very term “self-defense” is basically meaningless now. When I took taekwondo classes, I was always taught that I WOULD be arrested if I hit anybody in public, because as a tall man, I was expected not to feel threatened enough to use force by anybody unless they had a weapon. But now, who cares? As long as I can cry on cue and explain how scared I was when I hit the other guy, I can get away with murder! LITERALLY!

I remember all sorts of predictions of federal charges against Zimmerman after he was acquitted. Nothing came of them other than a lot of disappointment and further bitterness. The lesson of the day is that money can buy you a verdict.

I don’t think it had anything to do with money. That judge was driven by ideology.

My initial comment was meant to be sarcasm/satire. Obviously most of us would (theoretically anyway) face a considerable penalty if we actually shot someone in the street.

My concern is next time there is a major racial protest, will white vigilantes feel more emboldened because of this ruling?

It is probably the “correct” verdict under the law. And therein lies the problem. At the end of the day, the takeaway is this: In most of the US, as long as you are the one left standing when the smoke clears, you walk.

IMO an acquittal in the Arbery case would be as bad (or perhaps even worse) than an acquittal in the Chauvin case would have been.

Legally (but not morally), the Rittenhouse case was a much closer call. Especially with the exclusion of the evidence about Rittenhouse’s attitudes and motives from the trial.

My grandparents taught me to hunt. Decided shooting rabbits and squirrels wasn’t for me (my grandparents ate everything they killed).

Was in my mid 60s before I owned a gun. But felt the danger from the RWNJs was not to be ignored.

Bought a short barrelled 12 gauge pump action for self/home protection. Didn’t want a pistol in the house.

Not happy about a firearm in the house or about feeling it was necessary to have one. But let’s face it, they’re a lot of scary people out there who are armed to the teeth.

Re the earlier discussions about film vs digital, I spent many hours in the darkroom. It was owned by the guy teaching me. One of his primary interests was creating archival quality prints and even back then he was complaining about the archival quality papers disappearing.

When going through my mom’s estate, we found many very old photos of previous generations and family as kids. One of my brothers (who definitely qualifies as a guru) was able to digitize and fix damaged photos. So that history was saved.

But here is the dilemma:

We had prints that were over 100 years old. I’d consider those an archival storage medium.

How archival is digital? Formats change, readers change. Will we have 100 year old photos available in the future?

That depends on whether we remain a technological society or not. Post-collapse hunter-gatherers are not going to have Internet or even PCs, but if we keep the lights on, the data can be available forever.
