“Know Thyself” - from the 2021 full length album “This Beautiful Chaos”
with GRAMMY Award-winning Corin Nelsen (SynchroSonic Productions)

Know Thyself. I once heard an author say that he doesn’t write to
express but to discover. I have heard other artists in various fields
say something similar and that idea has stuck with me for years.
Creating something is a sort of self-learning process. To me, composing
music has always required a lot of solitude and reflection, discovery
and personal confrontation, practice and exploration. It just takes a
lot of time. If I am lucky a spark happens. Then I quickly start
trying out various approaches until something ignites and illuminates a
sound or idea that resonates as true to myself. Then I attempt to
follow that until something of substance seems to be forming. It is
like a continuous hunt and you learn a lot about yourself along the way.
Sometimes the trail goes dead. Sometimes it seems to open up into
endless other options. Or put another way, sometimes the ideas emerge
fully formed and other times just bits and pieces that make up a puzzle
I have to attempt to later solve. Yeah, pretty vague/abstract stuff I
know, but it comes with the gig. This is a sacred process to me that I
find is getting easier and easier to neglect in today’s ultra-digital
world. Don’t get me wrong, the tools and gadgets available now are
insanely awesome to create an ecosystem of heartfelt interaction and
earn a living. But I feel if I have any hope of retaining my own voice,
sanity and humanity, the hard fought creative process must never be put
to the side no matter what new platforms or algorithms change and demand
more of our attention to fuel. It gets fuzzy sometimes what we should
devote our limited time to, the craft or the hustle. There is a fine
line between being an artist and a digital content creator and anyone
involved in the arts must learn to balance both pursuits very carefully.
Outside pressures can take over and create unnecessary creative blocks
in the craft if we are not careful. This is a constant process of
recalibration. If you are an artist and content creator don’t neglect
one for the other. Vision first then onto the tools. Create first and
then promote. Explore first and then share. Discover first and then
express. Spend the time to be by yourself and dig into who you are in
the world and what is really true to you. This song is the soundtrack
to that inner tension in me. Know Thyself.

Only satellite telephony is available at present. Cable ship in Papua New Guinea; estimated two weeks to prepare, get there and effect repair.

Ash cloud appears to have affected radio transmission: RNZAF P3 could not transmit images until they had left the area.

Some deaths known but other small islands in the group reporting no loss of life.

Navy may send vessels out before complete info is in on the grounds it’s better to be on the way and turn back than to be needed and still three days away. HMNZS Aotearoa has the ability to supply 100,000 litres of fresh water a day, which might be Tonga’s most pressing need while their own sources are contaminated with volcanic ash.

Thanks to NZ for stepping up during this disaster. I don’t know what our closest fleet is, and how far away it is. It must feel terrible to be there, and know how far away help was.

The Royal Australian Air Force also dispatched a reconnaissance flight. I’ve no info on what their next moves will be, but could be very similar to ours.

There’s more than 80,000 Tongans living in New Zealand, in addition to the 105,000 or so on the islands. We owe it to them.

Tonga has strict Covid protocols for arrivals and is currently only generally open to citizens and permanent residents of the kingdom.

[Rear Admiral James] Gilmour said there had been no indication that had changed.

“I’ve got no indication there has been an alternation to … no boots on the ground, no contact approach,” he said.

Fortunately HMNZS Aotearoa’s reverse osmosis units can supply fresh water without the need for any crew to go ashore.

It may be genetic though.

When my father, an American officer, was posted to Great Britain in 1943, he was assigned as a liaison officer to a Scottish unit. One of the English officers (and yes, the officers were mostly English) was showing him around and they came upon a company from the unit practicing assault techniques.

The men were yelling something. So my father turned to the English officer and asked if that was their battle-cry. The English officer, a bit surprised, turned to my father and replied “No, they’re yelling ‘Have you got a cigarette Yank?’”

It’s “Pass Something” fever setting in again. Dem “moderates” being attracted like moths to a flame, in this case the idea that if they can get a “bipartisan” bill that involves “vote reform,” then they can use that as a fig leaf later this year to insist that they tackled Biden’s new priority even if the bill itself does all of jack and shit.

I can already predict how this will go: The filibuster reform vote is gonna crash as Sinema and Manchin hold to their donors…er, their “principles,” which will mean neither vote reform bill gets passed, leading to a sudden scramble among the “moderates” to get the GQP bill up because it’s “bipartisan” and it will allow them to “pass something.”

A really weird story is breaking here in Scotland, it’s got COVID and dead Americans from Utah and the FBI and Interpol.

TL:DR; an American who is wanted for rape in the US faked his own death, conned his family out of a lot of money and somehow ended up in a Glasgow hospital a couple of months ago suffering from COVID-19. He was apparently on a ventilator in ICU when he was arrested.

“Mr Rossi told US media in December 2019 that he had late-stage non-Hodgkin lymphoma and had weeks to live. Several outlets reported that he had died in February 2020.”

About 87% of nursing home residents are fully vaccinated and 63% have received a booster, according to CDC data. Among nursing home staff, 83% are fully vaccinated, but only 29% have gotten an extra dose.

So in actuality, only 63% of the residents are “fully” vaccinated, and 29% of the staff.

The booster isn’t an option anymore. That’s like saying you’re fully vaccinated against the flu from a shot you got in 2019.

In particular, they’ll claim that “new information” has revealed the “true nature” of 1/6, allowing them to promote any narrative they see fit - since, of course, they have no actual information or proof of any of it, merely their most fervent desire to obfuscate reality.

It’s been a while since I’ve had to buy a battery. I think the last one I bought was in the winter of 2020, for my little daily driver, since it was seeing very little use in the midst of the pandemic. In addition to the brand new battery, I also ordered an additional battery tender for it so that I could keep the battery in Mrs. Fish’s land yacht on its tender.

I need to go put the charger back on the X5. I actually replaced the battery about a year and a half ago but because I hardly need to drive it, I’m getting the ‘increased battery discharge’ warnings again. Oh, and I should put new batteries in the sonic rodent deterrent under the hood as well…it’s almost time of year for them to start chewing on the electric again.

My car turns 10 this year. Only complaint (besides the battery mentioned above) is the bluetooth cuts out and has to be re-set frequently…screws up my Sirius feed from my phone.

That’s a problem I frequently have with the land yacht, as it still has the old-school style of starter with a heavy-duty relay that takes chunky voltage to turn the engine over. I think they make new-style starters for these motors, but if I recall correctly, I’d have to pull the engine out and replace the flex plate, as the gears wouldn’t mesh properly. And that is NOT a job that’s worth doing for just a better starter motor.

When I was a youngster on the farm the barn cats would sometimes get under the hood as a hiding place from the snow. We lost a couple cats to the fan. Not a pretty sight.

My Rover has a hand-crank. I’ve used it twice—once for a test, and once in need. It’s kind of tricky, requiring a reset of the distributor to retard the spark, and the grip is important if you don’t want a broken wrist.

For those of you who frequently use battery maintainers, I recommend Battery Minder. I have a 12 year old battery in my diesel Kubota tractor, and the battery still tests good. When it isn’t charging the battery maintainer continuously delsulfates the battery. They won’t boil your battery like Harbor Freight garbage.

My dad had an old John Deere from the 1940’s that was designed to be started by pulling on the flywheel, exposed on the left side of the engine, by hand. That was a great way to get an arm workout as a teenager; doubly so after he had the engine rebuilt.

My Rover has a hand-crank.

My old Mercedes van had a hand-crank racked up in the cab. I tried it once, on a cold day, to try to turn over the 4 litre four-pot diesel engine which had oil resembling roofing tar in the sump. When I stood on the handle it moved a little. I put the handle back in the cab.

Four litres is almost twice the Landy, so no surprise. Part of the squady drill is to turn it over several times without spark, to make the oil happy.

Time to stop talking battery and go fix one. Later.

I’m sure he just feels like he’s being funny and edgy…I don’t even think he’s registered to vote (thankfully)…but it’s so tiring looking at that crap. And the ‘I’m just a dumb redneck in a $200 jacket’ act gets old…fast.

My Rover has a hand-crank. I’ve used it twice—once for a test, and once in need. It’s kind of tricky, requiring a reset of the distributor to retard the spark, and the grip is important if you don’t want a broken wrist.

The true father of women’s liberation is the engineer who designed the Delco starter.

I recall watching an old episode of Top Gear where the lads went to some auto museum, and checked out an antique vehicle the curators had nicknamed “The Breaker” or something. Since they had owned it, its toll was up to three wrists and two arms…..

Rabbi Cytron-Walker and his congregants escaped after throwing a chair at the gunman?? I guess that explains the clip I saw on the news where the door of the shul flew open, and people came barrelling out (followed by Akram waving his gun): Someone Up There must have been looking out for the good rabbi and his peeps: I’m somewhat surprised the cops didn’t open fire immediately (or were they expecting a breakout??).

I have a feeling that we’re not going to get through the day without one of the more willfully-ignorant Congress critters solemnly declaring that the GOP is honoring MLK by introducing legislation to reinstitute literacy tests and explicit poll taxes to help fight voter fraud.

They’d have to be SUPER ignorant, because the legislation they’d have to introduce to bring back poll taxes would have to be a constitutional amendment, to wit, the 24th Amendment:

Section 1
The right of citizens of the United States to vote in any primary or other election for President or Vice President, for electors for President or Vice President, or for Senator or Representative in Congress, shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State by reason of failure to pay poll tax or other tax.

I don’t even play around with that double masking any more. I have about 100 KF94’s. I trust the Korean masks more than the Chinese ones. The US N95s still seem to be a bit expensive and in short supply.

I figure if I use 2-3 of them a week I am good for about 6 months.

I have trouble getting the N95s to fit right on my face. I prefer the Korean KF94s. I decided to go whole hog and bought a box of 50 late last month. Individually wrapped, too! I wear one under a double layer cloth mask. I have to run over to CVS to fetch prescriptions today, and that’s what I’ll be using. I’m not super-thrilled about this, but I did test negative twice, so I’m pretty sure that if anyone is sick, it’s not me.

For the record, I woke with only a slight rise in temperature this morning so I think I’m hopefully on the downside of this, but I’d really like to stop being nauseous. Yesterday I was not feeling so great so I texted my brother and asked him if he’d run and get me a couple of 2 liter bottles of 7Up. It was more psychological than anything else, I think. When we were sick as kids, Mom would give us crackers and 7Up to settle our stomachs. He did it and dropped the bottles on my front porch. I bet he didn’t think he’d be spending his 58th birthday dropping off soda for his sick older sister!

So, entirely predictable. Trump always makes everything about him, attacks women and persons of color (double if the woman is a person of color), and thinks this is a winning strategy to keep his bigot brigade engaged and enraged.

Well, he’s not wrong on that - the GOP are scared of their base, and their collective lack of spine means the GOP is rushing headlong towards fascism and kakistocracy.

I remember the secret tunnel network from the 1970s. There were also secret arms caches around the Texas state prison in Huntsville. On a given signal, the prisoners would stage a mass breakout, seize the weapons, and fan out across the country to slaughter Christians (lengthy lists of whom were already in the hands of top inmates). My informant was the bookstore owner whom I once witnessed trying to cast out a Dodge Demon on a public street.

If you’re talking about felons having to pay their assessed fines for their crimes before being allowed to vote, from a legal perspective, sorry to say, that is NOT a poll tax and thus not covered by the 24th Amendment. Just as the 13th Amendment’s abolition of slavery has a HUGE FUCKING HOLE for the basic enslavement of prisoners, which has only partly been dealt with through case law under the 8th Amendment’s cruel and unusual clause.
