Just to relate a conversation about gun control and SCOTUS I had today. Back in the days of Bonnie and Clyde the Feds regulated full auto guns. As we know. Yet I see a lot of parallels in the problem from then until now.
The essential thing is those guns were too much in the hands of criminals for police to deal with. The AR and other semi-auto models today, it’s just too much killing horsepower to let run around.
This ain’t gonna happen but if they regulated certain assault rifle models like they do full auto, we satisfy certain legal angles and get a very specific handle on who has those guns.
It’s my feeling that we would have to make all semi-automatic firearms with detachable magazines class III weapons for that to work. I’d also say get rid of the Hughes Amendment and reopen the full auto registry as a carrot at the same time.
It would work, just as it did then, but even if it did get passed, how do we handle the gazillion rifles already out there? I’d certainly be fine with registering my AK and getting a tax stamp for it but you know the nutjobs would go nuts about it. Perhaps a freebe for the current owner - register and get your stamp and then if you sell it, the transfer tax would be applied? And it would have to be possible to do it much faster than it takes to currently register a short barrel rifle or transfer a MG. Sigh…

The problem is that almost every 5-round auto loading deer rifle would be affected.
I’ve got no problem with 5-round auto loading game rifles. I’ve got a 1938 Russian bolt action rifle. It’s an excellent deer gun. I can work the action nearly as fast as an auto-loading rifle.
But it’s the 5-round limit that makes the rifle a terrible weapon for mass shootings. It’s a pain-in-the-ass to shove another 5-round clip into the top of the rifle, with an open bolt, after the first clip pops out. Takes like four seconds. Plenty of time for effective counter fire. And then I’m dead. What fun is that?

And this is the problem. Is there any need for any civilian to have anything faster than bolt or pump action? Because why is five better than six, and why is six better than seven?

There is something disturbingly disconnected about the mind of Texas Governor Greg Abbott. We live in a country where a grieving husband had to actually take a Texas hospital to court to get them to take his wife’s corpse off life support because the hospital’s lawyers argued that state law was so vague regarding whether or not the plug could be pulled on a deceased pregnant patient if the fetus was still “alive” that they insisted a brain-dead body had to be kept “alive” until the fetus expired or was delivered.

The same thing we’re going to see more and more in coming decades: Governments finally getting around to addressing ecological crises running right up against the assholes who’ve kept government from doing until there were crises that needed to be addressed.
In this case, the government decided that there needs to be a drastic reduction in nitrogen compound emissions and so have ordered a 30% reduction in the use of animal feeds that promote such and the usage of nitrogen-based fertilizers. The predictable response from farmers is that they can’t be as productive unless they can pollute freely and screaming that the government’s trying to ruin them.

That as well. What’s irritating is that the farmers could make money off of the chicken guano that they now pollute the environment with. Like, the Russo-Ukrainan war has throttled fertilizer supply, and I believe that with a little help of Uni researchers (did I mention that the Netherlands has several nice ones?) they could come up with a process to use chicken guano as a raw material for domestically produced fertilizer.
It’s one of the facets which make be believe this may be astroturfed or some other shenanigans going on.

I notice nobody ever seems to be asking “Where’s all the teenagers?” After all, it’s been the line for literal decades of my life that nobody works in the service industry except teens/young adults. That’s how we justify paying such shitty wages with no benefits, that these are “entry level jobs,” that these are just “summer jobs” for teens making “spending money” or young adults who are on their probationary period before they start making “real money.” And that there’s such a glut of them in the summer that businesses can not only pick and choose who to hire, but they can fire somebody with the guarantee they’ll have a replacement the next day.

To work in the service industry during COVID was to be told you were “essential” and a “hero,” but you also weren’t worth more than minimum wage and could be replaced at a moment’s notice so “you should be happy you still have a job.”
To work in the service industry during COVID was to be told about how “vital” your place of business was in this time of panic and uncertainty, only for management and ownership to bend over backwards for entitled asshats who weren’t gonna cancel their summer vacation because “I booked it months ago!”
To work in the service industry during COVID was to watch companies that made all sorts of assurances pre-pandemic that health and safety are of top importance mumble about how there was no money in the budget for basic things like hand sanitizer, face masks, or face shields when people were getting sick left and right.
To work in the service industry during COVID was to have your employer who insisted that employee health is more important than profits give you all sorts of grief about testing positive because their business models of running with skeleton crews left absolutely no wiggle room if a single person got sick.
And to work in the service industry during COVID was to be assured again and again that your company cared about you, only for them to close your location and kick your ass to the curb as soon as their ledgers started bleeding red.
They’re dropping like flies 😆

The 1922 Committee, which governs the Conservative Party, is very likely to change the rules regarding that 12 months and allow for an internal no-confidence vote to be held pretty much immediately. It is certainly within their power to do so.
So Boris is not as safe as he might like to think he is. There’s a strong possibility that the 1922 Committee will say enough is enough (might even happen today, LOL), make the rule change, and that’s that. Boris wouldn’t survive such a vote.
At that point, Boris would have to go nuclear: Call a general election. This would be his Sampson Option - he knows he’s finished, but he’s gonna take the entire Conservative Party down with him.

Good grief. Spend half an hour trying to explain to a pro-lifer that the reports of people being denied prescriptions because they “could be used for abortions” aren’t because DNC thugs got to the the doctors, pharmacists and associated lawyers, but because the laws are poorly written.

Yeah, I’ve seen comparisons of such a rule change to the 25A, that it would basically be the party admitting that Boris is no longer competent to remain in power and was forcibly removing it. It would not surprise me at all that, in the face of such a scenario, his response would to bring down the entire party in a fit of egotistical rage.

There’s now likely going to be a pretty intense debate within the Conservative party about whether it would really be such a good idea for Boris Johnson to remain in office until this autumn. Lord Frost, the former Brexit minister, has already gone on record saying he doesn’t think that’s sustainable.
He wanted to be in office for three terms, become a new Churchill. Today, on the day of his resignation, Boris Johnson instead ties with Neville Chamberlain for number of days in No 10. He’s still behind Theresa May and Jim Callaghan. pic.twitter.com/c1mzcQR0EU

Religious people have for thousands of years destroyed monuments or statues they hate (see all the Greek and Roman monuments defaced by Christians, or the Buddhist monuments destroyed by the Taliban).
That’s one reason conservatives (aside from their racism) are whinging about removal of Confederate monuments: They see it as liberals (and RINOs) acting in a religious manner.
re: #109 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷
They see it as liberals (and RINOs) acting in a religious manner.
The whining right-wing are whining because they can’t tolerate losing the culture war, because:
1) for some of them awaits a literal hell if they sin and allowing wickedness to flourish is sin;
2) for others it is simply the realization that they (the atavists) have no where to hide.
The Independent slams the entire Tory party:
[…]
They backed Johnson through the Dominic Cummings scandal, through the resignations of two ethics advisers, through the scandal of a party donor paying for the decoration of his flat, through the mishandling of the pandemic and the mismanaging of Brexit with a rotten deal, Partygate and law breaking, an unlawful prorogation of parliament and breaking treaties and international law, allegedly trying to get Carrie a £100,000 job and Wilfred a £150,000 treehouse, depriving kids of free school dinners… and much, much more.
[…]
So, it’s not just Johnson who’s morally compromised, but the whole Tory party, with rare exceptions. They are all guilty men and women because they voted for him, campaigned for him, sustained him, lied for him and generally disgraced themselves and the country in the process. They were all members of the cult of Boris, and they knew exactly what he was.
It all sounds so familiar.

Nobody is blowing up those Confederate monuments, they are just asking for them to be removed from public property where they enjoy the cachet of official approval, or barring that, to add some sort of historical context on how and why they came to be erected there.

And tomatos.
I do not agree that all of Middle Earth is intended to be Europe.
And even the parts that are undoubtedly intended to be England-inspired (the Shire, and Rohan) still do not demand that all actors have lily white skin.
First off, Tolkien’s fiction is a truly fantasy world.
Secondly, even in real life the first (modern human) Europeans had brown skin.
Then all the other parts of Middle-earth are more technically called “Arda”, which comes from the root world for which English has “Earth”.
And the Amazon show is not about the Shire or Rohan. It’s about the larger Arda.
There is simply no place for a whites-only sign to be put on such a show.

Apple has announced a new ‘Lockdown Mode’ for iPhones, iPads and Macs to protect against Pegasus-style cyber attacks.Lockdown Mode is an optional protection for users who face ‘grave, targeted threats to their digital security’, like journalists and activists, Apple said.
When a device is in Lockdown Mode, apps, websites and features are restricted for security reasons, and others are completely disabled.
For example, most message attachment types in the Messages app other than images are blocked and other features, like link previews, are disabled.Incoming invitations and service requests, including FaceTime calls, are blocked if the user has not previously sent the initiator a call or request.
The new mode also blocks access to an iPhone when it is connected to a computer or accessory.
Lockdown Mode will be released this autumn with iOS 16, the tech giant’s new software update, announced last month.

This is an interesting article about an analysis of countries that fall into civil war. They tend to be either countries emerging from full authoritarianism, so the military is loosing control (i.e., Yugoslavia in the nineties) or weakly democratic countries in which people organize themselves around an ethnic or cultural identity. The US is a middling democratic country with one political party organized around its racial and religious identity (white evangelicalism) which is recruiting and training militia members from the military and police in preparation for civil war.

In a parliamentary system, the Prime Minister isn’t directly elected by the people, he is elected by parliament. BoJo is resigning, so parliament will select a new PM. Since the Tories have the majority, once they have selected a new party leader, they will elect him PM, with the Queen’s ok of course, which is mostly ceremonial.

I should add, since the PM is almost always a member of the House of Commons, one group of voters do get to vote directly for or against them, the voters in their district, which in the UK is called a constituency. If the U.S. had a parliamentary system, Nancy Pelosi would be the PM and head of government, and Joe Biden, as President, would have a mostly ceremonial role as the head of state, like the Queen.
re: #224 No Malarkey!

re: #213 Yeah Sure WhatEVs
What…just handing it to someone else without an election? Like….they inherit the job? How does that work?
Under parliamentary systems you are technically voting for the party, not just your local rep. The party with the most seats gets to name their leader as prime minister. Leadership changes result in a new prime minister without an election, though an unpopular choice generally provokes a new election - since in parliamentary systems elections are not at fixed intervals, but can be called at certain events and within given timeframes - and an unpopular choice usually results in your party getting smashed.
Unlike in the US system, parliamentary systems often have big swings from election to election. Most also have independent commissions to prevent severe gerrymandering, so a party that can’t win a popular vote really can’t hold on to power.

If memory serves, the LHC allows chemical elements to be essentially slammed into each other at EXTREMELY high speeds, no?

Prime minister, like any other minister, is not an elected office in the UK.
When Vanessa Brangi, a 37-year-old in New Jersey, visited her mom to celebrate her 65th birthday over the last weekend in June, she didn’t hide that she was in a bad mood.“I walked in the house, and she’s like, ‘How are you?’ ” Brangi remembered. “I flat-out said, ‘I guess I’m not a free person anymore.’ “
Brangi was bemoaning the Supreme Court’s decision to overrule Roe v. Wade in the days prior. Politics have frequently been a source of strife between her and her right-leaning mother, but this time, her mother surprised her.
“When she said, ‘I agree. I think women need to be the one to make this choice,’ I was honestly shocked,” Brangi said. “I thought she was pretty far gone.”
Brangi is one of many twenty- and thirtysomethings around the country who have seen a different side of their mothers in the days since the Supreme Court struck down Americans’ constitutional right to an abortion. More used to avoidance and disagreement about politics, some liberal adult kids are finding that their conservative mothers are actually in agreement with them when it comes to abortion—in some cases so staunchly that they’re reconsidering how they’re voting.
“She actually legitimately seems mad that her granddaughters could enter adulthood not being able to make these choices.”
— Vanessa BrangiTake it from Chad, a 23-year-old in Arkansas who didn’t want to use his last name. “Two weeks ago, we had a conversation about—I think it was the Jan. 6 commission,” he said of his mom, who is 58. “She threw out the comment of, ‘Not all Republicans are bad.’ And now two weeks later, she’s telling me she’s probably never going to vote for another Republican, even in our state.”
“My whole family’s never really been political or outspoken in any way,” Chad said. But the day the Dobbs ruling came down, “once the topic came up, she kind of went all in on being upset at these justices and Asa Hutchinson and all these folks who are running right now in Arkansas,” he said, referring to the state’s governor. “She’s upset about abortion but also what it could mean for the future. She has two daughters, both of my sisters, so I think she’s upset about just what it means for other women.”

LHC takes protons and slams them against each other. It uses superconducting magnets to whip protons to near light speed at each other and they collide within sets of detectors that identify the resulting explosions and the detritus - particles that make up the protons. The higher the energy of the collider, the more particles that can be created.

re: #232 Crush White Nationalism
We (and by we, I mean most Democrats) have been warning about this very thing for years. We said this would happen if Trump were to enter office, and run his extremists to SCOTUS, and that’s precisely what happened. All the naysayers who claimed this was hysteria were wrong. Like so completely wrong that the naysayers should never be trusted again on any opinion they hold. It was so predictable that this would be the outcome, that those naysayers should be run from their punditry.
Of course, those same pundits will claim that Democrats are doing nothing - a lie - or move on to the next bit of punditry where they’re wrong again with no consequences.
States like NY and NJ and CA are moving to protect women’s rights, and access to health care that includes abortions, as well as protecting women who come to NJ from other states’ overreach.
Mind you, all those protections might be undone by this same SCOTUS, but we’ll have to cross that bridge when we get to that (and the naysayers will again claim that SCOTUS would never do something like that, but this Court’s extremist bench has repeatedly shown no interest in following the rule of law or precedent when invoking their policy preferences by legislating from the bench and invalidating decades (or a century’s worth) of law and jurisprudence by fiat.
This is the court that would make the modern equivalent of fugitive slave laws to deny women access to health care.
Fuck them, fuck the pundits, and naysayers about how the GOP and these fucking Christian fascists are going to ruin lives and deny people their rights. They’ve done it already, and will keep doing it.
When you get right down to it, this perfectly illustrates the conservative mindset towards engaging with history. They do not want anything that makes America (white people) look like the villains. Hence the anti-CRT backlash. pic.twitter.com/vDTZ8TyQ07

For the first time, Hayden Panettiere is opening up about a secret addiction to opioids and alcohol that nearly cost her career — and her life.
“I was on top of the world and I ruined it,” the former Nashville star, 32, says in the new issue of PEOPLE. She spent years battling her addiction, as well as a devastating bout with postpartum depression. “I’d think I hit rock bottom, but then there’s that trap door that opens.”
Eventually, Panettiere — who shares a 7-year-old daughter, Kaya, with her ex, Wladimir Klitschko — was determined to get help. “I put a lot of work into myself and I had to be willing to be incredibly honest,” says the actress, who underwent both trauma therapy and inpatient treatment within the last year. Now she’s returned to set to reprise her fan-favorite character Kirby Reed in the next Scream film, and she’s pouring her heart into her work with Hoplon International, the charity she founded in March whose mission it is to raise funds for Ukraine as the country endures its fifth month of war with Russia.
“This hasn’t been easy and there were a lot of ups and downs,” says Panettiere of her journey to sobriety and happiness. “But I don’t regret even the ugliest things that have happened to me. I feel incredibly accomplished. And I feel like I have a second chance.”

I’m not suggesting that it should affect the casting decisions in the current show, but there is no question that Tolkien’s original intention was to create a mythology for England, and he noted (and changed where he could — tobacco became pipe-weed, for example) anachronisms in his work. It simply doesn’t matter what color they were, then or now — except to crazy white supremacists who mix a perverted version of Tolkien with Nazi ideology for their world view.

save the cheerleader, save the world.
You could not ask for a sadder display of how America’s gun culture has begun to whittle away our other freedoms than the attack on the Fourth of July celebration in Highland Park, Illinois.A 21-year-old man with an assault rifle opened fire on the parade, killing seven spectators and orphaning a 2-year-old boy. Three dozen people were injured, hundreds are in mourning, and thousands will never celebrate Independence Day the same way again.
While Highland Park captured the most media attention, all in all, 220 Americans were shot and killed over the holiday weekend. That doesn’t include five people who survived being shot during the fireworks after an Oakland A’s game—hit by stray, apparently celebratory bullets from a high-powered rifle fired outside the ballpark. Or two police officers shot—again perhaps by accident—at the Fourth of July fireworks display in Philadelphia. In a grim, resigned statement that seemed to sum up the bloody holiday, Mayor Jim Kenney said, “We live in America, and we have the Second Amendment, and we have the Supreme Court of the United States telling everybody they can carry a gun wherever they want. This is what we have to live with.”
It feels like an inflection point in the balance between the right to bear arms and the right to, well, do just about anything else. The triumph of guns is throttling American public life, chipping away at our experience of school, shopping, protest, celebration, debate, electoral politics, and even the writing of laws.
You’d be hard-pressed to find an institution in this country that isn’t buckling under the weight of a gun fetish that has seen domestic firearms production triple since 2000 and a steady rise in mass shootings, as right-wing courts and state legislatures repeal rules and politicians and gunmakers stoke fears of tyranny and civil war. America now has more guns than people, according to one estimate.
For some people, the growing presence of guns in American community spaces represents the very essence of freedom. For many of us, though, they’re an assault on the social contract, a threat that undermines our freedom and confidence to go about our lives long before anyone pulls the trigger. The ubiquity of guns, and the we way contort ourselves and our institutions to accommodate it, is debilitating enough.

Millions of Americans have had their minds poisoned by decades of propaganda that the government they elect is their enemy, and the only way to defend their freedom is to prepare to fight a war against it, and that is the purpose of the Second Amendment. This has been very profitable for the gun industry, which has sold countless millions of assault rifles to increasingly paranoid, radicalized Americans.

re: #249 Crush White Nationalism
My own personal encounters with the “well-regulated militia.”
Backstory, now age 54, grew up in Texas in a 2 child nuclear family that owned about 4 bolt action deer rifles, a .22 long rifle, and 3 shotguns. We did not live on a farm. It was a normal suburb. We did have access 120 miles away to some family members that did own deer hunting land. Bear in mind that this was the 70’s and 80’s before the fetish with assault weapons really began to take off.
Encounter #1 - me age 12, brother age 10. After a normal brother/brother fight, my 10 year old brother comes into my parent’s bedroom where I am standing with my mother and points a fully loaded .22 long rifle at my head ready to fire. My mother is directly behind me watching this unfold. If he would have shot me in the head, it very might have killed me and hit my mother as well, or at the very least sprayed her with my brains.
Encounter #2. College 1988 I lived in a ranch style house divided into rental rooms sharing a common bathroom. One tenant we knew was mentally disturbed and taking medication. When I was at work one evening, another roommate comes by and tells me he discovered the disturbed boy in his room with his brains all over the wall and a bolt action rifle on the floor, obviously the scene from Full Metal Jacket played out in real life. This is before assault weapons and the internet, so obviously relieved if it had to turn out like this, he was not also radicalized online and had an ar-15 variant to take out our entire house if he felt like it.
Encounter #3. 1995, my father’s suicide. After years of alcoholism and various other problems, my 2-year divorced father took his own life by hanging himself from a staircase. Investigators found a loaded revolver next to a pile of personal tax forms and other financial paperwork that he had been working on up to that point. So he was going to go out not matter what, but ended it all doing the option that would not leave a big mess. Also this was still before the era of online radicalization. I am glad he was not exposed to decades of Fox News (like current right wing assholes in my own family) and decide to take his feelings of entitlement and violence out on the public.
And these days, increasingly I feel an undercurrent of rage on the driving roads around here, with radicalized white men ready to fire at anyone and everything that crosses them while on the road. I keep having thoughts that my end WILL eventually be from the barrel of a gun somehow. This is no way to live. This is not the type of country I want to live in anymore.

re: #256 Decatur Deb
It will probably never come to that on any meaningful scale. OTOH, by the time people might discover they need to arm and train, it will be much too late.
It is already happening on a meaningful scale. Armed American terrorists already kill people on a regular basis and in large numbers. The threat of such affects daily life for most Americans - it affects our schools, our children, how we gather for social events. Americans ignore it or don’t think it is significant because the idea that white men can kill you if they want is hardcoded into American culture, and the solution is to either join them or avoid them.
Americans are constantly terrorised by their homegrown terrorists. That’s a meaningful scale to me, and to pretty much anyone who didn’t grow up here. That doesn’t even count the much larger meaningful scale of people who die in domestic shootings, in accidental shootings, in gang shootings, in ones and twos. America is a culture of human sacrifice, and any sacrifice is acceptable as long as white men continue to feel like they have the power of life and death.

…If young people voted at the same rate as old people, Democrats would win all competitive elections and probably quite a few that are now not competitive. This disparity is what keeps the Republican Party alive.
What the Democrats need to do is find ways to get young people to vote.
…
There are probably other things that can be done, but getting turnout up among young voters really should be the Democrats’ top priority.

That makes the assumption that young people who don’t vote will vote Democratic in the same proportion as those who are motivated to vote. I wish I believed that was true.
Young people aren’t any less susceptible to propaganda, misinformation, or simply being nihilistic arseholes than older people. The means by which they get radicalised is different, but young voters aren’t going to save this country any more than Hispanic or Asian ones will. After all, Republicans have been fascists now for nearly 40 years, if not longer. Whole generations have grown up with this. And yet, the generation that most reliably votes fascist isn’t boomers, but Gen X.

……
Any Republican would have made these appointments. These are McConnell’s extremists, not Trump’s, though it was Trump that persuaded Kennedy to leave so the situation would not have been quite so dire if another Republican had gotten elected when it came to Roe. But it would have been equally dire for all the other decisions.

Having grown up among Republicans, I can say the ‘reasonable’ part was just a facade.
what they were back then was more or less honest brokers agreeing to and abiding by the rules of the game.
they accepted the dems as legitimate and were not out for their total destruction.
they understood that the complicated business of politics is to negotiate agreements between groups with different interests the object of which is to find a common way forward.
i.e. to compromise, more or less
“If you can’t learn to compromise on an issue without compromising yourself, you sure as hell should never be in the legislative body. Every document of this country was a compromise. Go home and bitch and raise hell around the city council or something. Go haunt someone else. But you should never come to Congress. And you should never get married.”
‘If you want to be a purist, go somewhere on a mountaintop and praise the east or something. But if you want to be in politics, you learn to compromise. And you learn to compromise on the issue without compromising yourself. Show me a guy who won’t compromise and I’ll show you a guy with rock for brains.’
— Former Sen. Alan Simpson (R-WY), quoted by Time.
someone else (who I cant recall):
Compromise says nothing about abandoning principles. It’s figuring out how to get as much as you can from the political process. Not stamping your foot and demanding that all things must go your way or you’ll throw a tantrum (and wrench into the system, grinding it to a halt).

yes, that’s the assumption. from the link inside the link
This is in line with the conventional wisdom that there’s a consistent age gap in our politics today, where older voters vote red and younger voters veer blue. And there are myriad reasons why this is the case. For one, older Americans are more likely to be white and religious — two demographic groups that also tend to vote Republican. They’re also more likely to favor less government intervention and are more prone to believing that increased diversity isn’t a good thing for the country — which is in line with many Republicans’ way of thinking.

Most people in open shooting wars don’t die of being shot either. Just because you and I are unlikely to be shot in a mass shooting event doesn’t mean that the terror and threat of such doesn’t affect our everyday life.
Children all across this country regularly train for terror events. They are taught to not open the door for a pleading classmate and to let them die, an inversion of basic empathy that appalls me every time I think about it. Mass shootings don’t just happen in schools or events, they happen in houses, at parties, and anywhere people go. Again, Americans just accept this loss as cost of doing business, where the business is white supremacy. Your point is that we don’t have to live in fear, just as we don’t live in fear of driving or other things that we do in life that people die doing all the time, and that’s fine. But it is not overreacting at all to point out that America is absolutely a nation that practices human sacrifice, nor is it an overreaction to understand that Americans practice terrorism on their own countrymen every day. I still remember the first time an American casually tapped the pistol on his dash after I flipped him off for cutting me off in traffic. Again, I’m sure for most Americans, they just think that’s an understandable and minor road rage incident. It’s not. It’s not normal to advertise to other people in a supposedly civil society that you can and will kill them if you want. It’s not normal for children to point loaded guns at each other after scuffles, as Florida Panhandler pointed out upthread. That’s not how people in modern, civilised societies live or behave. Americans are just so numb to domestic terrorism that they think it’s normal.

Most (not all) were reasonable back in the 60’s, 70’s, and even during the 80’s.
There was an actual overlap between Republican and Democratic positions. That is now gone, except for a couple of fairly moderate Republican governors in strong Democratic states, and some conservative Democratic governors in strong Republican states (John Bel Edwards, who signed a heartbeat bill into law).
When they were both in the House, Justin Amash at one point, had a voting record slightly to the left of Krysten Sinema.
Of course, Justin Amash later on declared his independence from the Republican Party, and Krysten Sinema does everything she can to sabotage Democratic bills in the Senate, which shows you how much of an abnormality this is anymore.

Most people in open shooting wars don’t die of being shot either. Just because you and I are unlikely to be shot in a mass shooting event doesn’t mean that the terror and threat of such doesn’t affect our everyday life.
Children all across this country regularly train for terror events….
“Massacres at supermarkets, churches, classrooms, shopping malls, and good God, July Fourth parades are not like other violence. They shatter our sense of safety. They destroy our sense of normal life. Who among us has not wondered whether we might fall victim to this madness at a ball game or a concert? This epidemic of mass random shootings is not like gang killings in cities. It’s like terrorism. It invades the normal, peaceful world—the places in which we must feel secure.”

My experience is colored by having been brought to a Goldwater rally in company with some Birchers when I was 10.
This interview is one of the most pathetic displays of feckless pseudo-journalism I’ve ever seen, and that’s saying a lot.

“When Herschel Walker’s campaign aides approached him this winter to discuss whispers that Walker had a secret child, the Georgia GOP’s Senate candidate told his campaign the rumors were false,” the Daily Beast reports.“Walker’s aides already knew he was lying.”
“They had expected him to lie, and had obtained documents in advance of that conversation verifying that Walker did indeed have another child… They handed the documents to him, and after some more back and forth, Walker finally admitted it was true. His aides asked if there were any other children they needed to know about. Walker insisted this was it.”
Said a campaign adviser: “He’s lied so much that we don’t know what’s true.”

Yeah, the biggest Brexit proponent in the British government sure is a globalist. Idiots.
The “globalist” remark in the segment related to Johnson’s handling of Covid after he recovered from his very serious bout of the illness — that he following the “globalist” recommendations regarding masks, shutdowns, etc.

But the demographic makeup of young people today is much less white than previous generations, which is a problem for the party of white nationalism.
Again, I wish that were true, but it’s really not a problem. The default human reaction when there’s an ingroup and outgroup and you don’t look like the ingroup is still to try to join the ingroup and pretend you are, not to identify with the outgroup.

A deep journalistic dive shows these people are not friends of climate action, or abortion rights (though they organised many of the protests since the Extreme Court struck down Roe).
They are a cult and a front for the Revolutionary Communist Party, a group the overwhelming majority of left activist groups reject. (They also have a hate-boner for Democrats.)
Their leader is Bob Avakian (Wikipedia), who started with Students for a Democratic Society but has become increasingly radical (and is accused of running both a cult-of-personality and a pyramid scheme).

Aloto will just talk about the storied traditions going back to the 1930s, and then use this to abolish all taxes as unconstitutional.

Ohio U.S. Senate candidate J.D. Vance (R) compared abortion to slavery in an interview last fall, drawing a controversial parallel between America’s original sin and a procedure that until recently was a constitutional right,” Vice News reports.Said Vance: “There’s something comparable between abortion and slavery, and that while the people who obviously suffer the most are those subjected to it, I think it has this morally distorting effect on the entire society.”
He added: “I really think abortion has really done something very socially destructive to us as people in how we see the most vulnerable and the most dependent among us. I think that’s one of the under-appreciated facts about abortion. It’s really distorted our entire society.”
