Seeing that actor James Caan has died at the age of 82.

Did he ever apologize for this?

Declaring that the US needs a hawk in power, American film great James Caan threw his support behind Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.
“It’s a pretty dangerous world,” said the 76-year-old Jewish actor, during an interview on Wednesday with reporters in Jerusalem, in the middle of his first visit to Israel.
The Academy Award nominee, best known for his role as the hot-headed Sonny Corleone in 1972’s The Godfather, explained that the US needed a change after eight years of President Barack Obama’s policies.

“I was never politically oriented - in fact I called myself a radical middle-ofthe- roader. Unfortunately, with these last two terms of our current president, my children are going to be affected by his decisions, or lack of them, in a big way.
It’s a pretty dangerous world, so given the choices - which are not really wonderful - I am supporting Donald Trump in the hopes that his ego won’t get in the way, and that he’s smart enough to hire good people. We don’t know that, but we pretty much do know what Hillary will do. So if Trump listens to the people he hires and he has a great cabinet, the scale tips that way for me. We need a hawk right now.”

CORCORD, N.C. — An adult has been cited after a child brought a loaded gun to a summer camp for children ages 6 and 7, according to the Concord Police Department.

Police said on Tuesday morning, a counselor at Les Myers Summer Camp was made aware that a fellow camper had a weapon inside of their lunchbox.

The staff then immediately addressed the camper, secured the weapon and called authorities.

The camper involved in this incident said they had no intention of causing harm or using the weapon to threaten campers or staff, investigators said.

However, the child will not be allowed to return back to camp, according to police.

Hate to say it, but the answer to Sarah’s question, IMO, is “probably not much”. Even given the massive (by historical standards) turnover of personnel in the Trump Administration (remember Rachel Maddow’s “wall”?) a group bail a la BoJo/Tories would probably have had a minimal effect. TFG would likely simply have insulted/derided/dismissed them all in a series of nasty tweets, the GOP would have backed him up, the RW media would have engaged in a orgy of “good riddance” BS, and the rest of the media might have dwelt on it for a day or so: until the next circus/scandal/flap/deflection popped up - as it inevitably would have.

One thing that _far_ too many people don’t understand is that commodities are fungible in a global market. Oil prices rise and fall based on international actions, regardless of who _you_ are buying from. Not 100% because of different types of oil require different methods.

And really, it’s not American oil. It’s Russian oil, until it is sold to whomever. And it’s not being given away, certainly not being given away by Biden.

Russia is selling it at massive discounts, so they’re getting far less money than they would have from other sellers. This also keeps India and China from buying oil that would have been bought by sanctioning countries.

Which should have kept oil prices down in the USA if it weren’t for refinery bottlenecks, and price gouging companies.

And which causes less money to go into the Russian state.

When the European nations stop their gas purchases from Russia, that will hit Russia even more.

Everyone except Russia wins.

But actually, I’m wrong, we’re still losing in the long term, maybe more slowly as prices make people rethink driving plans, but sticker shock is making transitioning off fuel inefficient cars that much harder.

Everyone will _really_ win, if countries use this as an excuse to ramp up their use of carbon neutral power sources, and stop building fossil fuel plants, coal or other wise. Ramp up nuclear for a few decades, until we have a net carbon-negative economy, and bring up solar shades for a century or two until the effects.

Am I missing someone? I only count 14. When Elizabeth II became Queen in 1952, Harry Truman was still President: so:
1. Truman
2. Eisenhower
3. Kennedy
4. Johnson
5. Nixon
6. Ford
7. Carter
8. Reagan
9. GHWB
10. Clinton
11. GWB
12. Obama
13. Disgraceful Shithead
14. Biden.

Still an impressive record, though.

Right you are! I corrected it. That’s what comes from trying to count over ten with your fingers!

Oil is symbolic. It is seen as America’s lifeblood and birthright.

We measure our prosperity in how many resources we consume.

I’ll just say that Graham kissing Trump’s ass is the inevitable consequence of Trump being more popular with S.C. GOP voters than Graham is; no blackmail needed.

Christ, I just had three spam calls in rapid succession. A nice feature would be if phones would send spam risk calls directly to voice mail; I would pay for that instead of the “Spam Risk” identifier.

There is clearly a flaw in the “Spam Risk” routine; calls from my dentist’s office are routinely so flagged.

Phone rings, push button, phone asks caller to state name and reason for call, spam hangs up, real calls talk. Very handy for unrecognized numbers.

I pick up, keep it on mute, until they start talking or hang up.

The last time I heard talking it turned out to be the Republican National Congressional Committee. I really should have held open the phone for them, but I didn’t want to increase my stress levels.

That may be true, but a long while ago, a lizard posted a tweet from someone claiming that Graham was held in check because of very devastating information that Trump had on him.

The rumor that’s been going around on the grapevine (and made its way to the internet) involved underage male escorts and photo/video evidence. Trump, or more likely someone from his team, managed to get his hands on that alleged evidence, showed it to him, and threatened to go public with it - which accounted for Graham’s abrupt volte-face regarding Trump.

As though anybody doesn’t know already. Is there anyone who would actually be shocked to find out Graham is gay? It would only be shocking if they had photos of him with underage boys.

I turned off the ringer on my phone about six months ago, and haven’t missed it. Work calls are via Teams, and my friends use email.

As though anybody doesn’t know already. Is there anyone who would actually be shocked to find out Graham is gay? It would only be shocking if they had photos of him with underage boys.

Maybe he thinks that Republicans would turn on him if it was out there as a fact, rather than a strong suspicion.

I am good friends with several swing state Republicans on Truth Social who will post that they would never vote for a RINO who rigged the primaries against President Trump.

It’s long been rumored that Lindsay prefers the company of men. His never having married or had kids only fuels the speculation.

The speculation is that it has to be something far more devastating to a Southerner than merely being gay; that his constituents are aware that he’s gay and don’t really care. For example, a video of him with someone under the age of consent.

Correct. Trump never even matched Romney’s % of the vote in 2012 of just over 47%. But Trump appealed to white voters without college degrees, who were overrepresented in key swing states like Ws, Mi and Pa. They didn’t vote for Romney, who reminded them of their boss who downsized them.

Timothy Loehmann resigns from tiny Pennsylvania department after protests over his role in Tamir Rice’s death

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Timothy Loehmann, the former Cleveland police officer who shot and killed Tamir Rice, has left the small department in Pennsylvania that hired him this week.

Loehmann resigned Thursday morning, hours after media outlets reported that the borough of Tioga had hired him. Residents even protested the move at the town’s offices.

snip

Loehmann’s hiring was a surprise to many, including Mayor David Wilcox.

“I was under the impression that there was a thorough background check into him, that he didn’t have any issues,” Wilcox said Wednesday.

“I found it strange that someone would move here all the way from Cleveland, Ohio, for $18 an hour. But I heard that he wanted to get away from it all and come here to hunt and fish.”

Loehmann has tried to obtain other jobs with other police departments. He attempted to gain a part-time position in Bellaire, in eastern Ohio in 2018. He later left soon after he was hired.

As someone who had grown-ass men solicit me back in the eighties at ages 15 and 17 (while looking years younger than my chronological age), Lindsey Graham gives me serious chickenhawk vibes. It would not surprise me to find a 15-17 year old or three hidden in his closet. It would also not surprise me if Graham gave in to such urges any more or less than many other straight men with power and privilege has done throughout the ages.

Not saying he has, just that it wouldn’t surprise me based on previous life experience as a target.

This article by Mark Leibovich in The Atlantic is well-written and has a depressing insight about McCarthy and Graham. It was never about fear of Trump. It was always about using him to maintain “relevance” (Graham) and power (or hope of becoming Speaker—McCarthy). Same with the rest of them—sure some feared getting primaried, but it is all just rank lickspittlery.

Mehmet Oz is trailing in polls. A key Republican has yet to endorse him since the celebrity doctor won the GOP nomination for Pennsylvania Senate more than a month ago. And Oz has gone dark on the airwaves since May 21 — even as his Democratic rival John Fetterman burnishes his brand on TV as a political outsider, and paints Oz as a carpetbagger from New Jersey.

This is not the general election kickoff in a pivotal Senate race that Republicans were hoping for. The shaky start to Oz’s general election campaign, coming off a hard-fought primary that took a recount to resolve, is prompting finger-pointing in GOP circles. Some Republicans are arguing that Oz should do more to unite the party, reach deeper into his pockets to fund his campaign.

Have we reached the point that vaccinations no longer protect us from the newest variants? Just like the flu vaccine from a prior year is useless against the current year flu, are we now defenseless against BA.5 or BA.2.75?

That’s a possibility, but it may just be that when people keep catching it, the damage builds up over time until they die.

As opposed to providing some level of protection against the strain? Are people becoming ill because each strain is sufficiently different that there is no real protection? OTOH looking at (e.g.) France, while case numbers are certainly rising, deaths remain relatively low, nothing like the previous wave from omicron earlier this year. Let’s hope that this onslaught proves not to be as deadly as previous ones, at least partly because of the effectiveness of available therapeutics.

It’s clearly not enough protection for some people. We don’t really know what percentage of the population is vulnerable to being worn down by this disease, rather than building defenses against it.

Most people might be OK, or it could be the one that seriously thins our population. I’m not hearing about mass deaths of restaurant workers who are constantly exposed to the disease, so that’s a good sign.

Also, not as many people dying now isn’t anything to brag about. Long covid is a real thing, and that’s not going to go away.
It’s not always just a matter of reinfection, suck it up, and “getting over it”.

I don’t think it ought to be their right. Businesses need to meet some basic standards to be allowed to exist.

How about if they want to restrict their business entirely to white people, rather than to mostly white people and a handful of insane or grifting black people, which restricting to the Republican Jesus faith would do?

California is at about 16,000 daily infections and 15 deaths. We are a state that’s pretty well vaccinated (with pockets of never-vaxxers, of course). Which suggests that the latest variants are still not overcoming the vaccine. I’ve read some stuff I don’t really understand, not being an immunologist, that there’s more than one type of immunity, and even if one wears off, the other continues to protect you.

Even so, vaccination numbers being good doesn’t mean that all those vaccinated people have kept up their boosters, and a lot haven’t. This might account for the numbers of new infections too.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — He was 5 feet, 5 inches tall, 140 pounds and unarmed, surrounded by five law enforcement officers and a K-9.

But to subdue and arrest Alejandro Clarke Jr. in Hardin County last spring, officers said they had to hit him repeatedly — with a baton, their fists, boots, knees, elbows and flashlights — tase him four times and sic a K-9 on him three times.

And while an ambulance was at the scene, officers instead put him in the back of a cruiser to take him to the hospital, leaving Clarke alone inside for about 30 minutes. He went into cardiac arrest and was later pronounced dead.

“This was the most savage beating that I’ve seen,” said attorney Garry Adams, who along with co-counsel David Ward recently filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of Clarke’s family against Kentucky State Police and the Hardin County Sheriff’s Department and EMS.
