This is a total disgrace but the problem here is not Trump but the laws. Trump accountants and lawyers are taking advantage of laws that may (or may not) have been designed to allow this very outrageous action. This is why average people have such contempt for our legal and revenue systems; they all seem written to allow the wealthy and powerful to escape financial accountability while placing all the financial burden on the middle and working classes.

There isn’t any particular reason to be fair to Trump, but it’s entirely possible that there is an appropriate headstone which has been ordered. Doesn’t change the repulsive fact that his awful children let him bury their mother on a golf course for tax breaks.

Also want to mention that apparently no one from Nixon’s family ever visited the grave roadsideamerica.com
Since Nixon never lived on Long Island, and only buried Checkers there in 1964 because it was convenient, some locals look upon the dog as an unwelcome outsider. Suffolk County Historical Society President Wallace Broege has been quoted as saying “I think it does Long Island a disservice.”
That doesn’t stop the visitors from coming. And while patriots still plant small American flags next to the dog’s granite tombstone (Plot #5), no one from the former first family has ever visited.
Note: Rumors that Checkers was to be exhumed and reburied at the Richard Nixon Library in Yorba Linda, CA, are false. However, the Library does have a topiary Checkers.
On June 22, 2001, the NY Post had an article reporting that very rumor mentioned above.

I just opened a video in a new tab but did not look at it right away. When I finally go to it there was a pop-up window in the middle of the screen telling me the video was paused and would I like to continue.

You also have rules and regulations on how you may behave around polling stations, and who may do what, not like in GA, but to ensure voters aren’t bribed or pressured.
Depending on how those laws are written, a candidate for an election or a member of his or her party handing out gifts can run afoul of such laws. It would have to be some neutral third party.

After a theoretical Constitutional Convention, I suspect a number of Red States would quickly become international pariahs as racist laws are quickly passed bolstering racial and sexual discrimination and evils like child labor, child marriage and polygamy are either ignored or even enabled by law. They will revel in their inhumanity as Russia does now.
And any notion of Red State fair elections would be a thing of the past as any public voting systems remaining start to resemble the current Iranian model, where only candidates that are approved by a Conservative council can even get on the ballot. But more likely is the possibility that any voting is apportioned by how much land and property the male “Christian” voter owns.

Former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) detailed a plan to “fundamentally remake the United States” in remarks caught on tape and reported by Insider.
Santorum told GOP lawmakers this would culminate with an unprecedented event: a first-of-its-kind convention to rewrite the Constitution.
Said Santorum: “You take this grenade and you pull the pin, you’ve got a live piece of ammo in your hands… 34 states — if every Republican legislator votes for this, we have a constitutional convention.”
They also need to ratify whatever they put together, so 38.

Poland has a long and very bad history of Russian oppression extending back centuries that will keep it out of Putin’s orbit.
You don’t need to go back centuries or even to the last century for the current antagonism; Jarosław Kaczyński, the most powerful politician in Poland, blames Putin for the 2010 death of his twin brother, then President of Poland, in a plane crash. It was ruled an “accident” but his certainty is well-founded.

Matthew Moczygemba knew something was wrong when he lost his thirst. It was midafternoon on a 103-degree day in Fort Worth, Texas, and the UPS driver had been delivering packages for several hours. Soon he felt dizzy, then he pulled his truck over and vomited onto the curb.“I stopped sweating and was starting to get cold,” said Moczygemba, 35, who has worked for UPS for five years. “It was a bad feeling.”
Moczygemba wound up at a hospital emergency room, where doctors diagnosed him with dehydration and heat exhaustion, and gave him several bags of IV fluid, according to medical records.
He was released a few hours later, but he has not returned to work in the nearly three weeks since.
“I’m nervous about going back,” Moczygemba said.
With heat waves rolling across the country, and states like Texas and Oklahoma experiencing record hot summers, workers exposed to the elements are increasingly struggling under the heat.
More than a dozen UPS employees and union leaders say this year more workers seem to be getting sick and been hospitalized because of the heat than ever before. In response, they are demanding that the company put more safety measures in place.
“Left and right people are falling out,” said Jeff Schenfeld, a union steward in Dallas and UPS veteran of 25 years. “Something is different this year. It’s a lot more people.”

That’s the thing; a Hitler who wouldn’t attack the Soviet Union wouldn’t have been Hitler. It was the heart of his ideology. Fascism always carries the seeds of its own destruction, as we are seeing in Russia, where Putin is destroying the Russian army in his irrational pursuit of empire.

Former Philippine President Ramos has died at 94:
Former Philippine President Fidel Valdez Ramos, who died on Sunday, was a fighter during wars in Korea and Vietnam and a survivor in the political arena, emerging from a high-ranking security role during the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos Sr to win the vote for the nation’s highest office. He was 94.
Ramos became a hero to many for defecting from Marcos’ government, where he led the national police force, spurring the dictator’s downfall during the 1986 popular uprising against his rule.
Others, though, would not forgive or forget his role in enforcing martial law under the Marcos regime.
When Ramos defected from Marcos’ regime, that was pretty much game over. But Ramos certainly was no saint; as the article notes, he was a ruthless enforcer of martial law in the Philippines which started in 1972 and lasted until Marcos’ downfall in 1986…all with a seal of approval from the USA, starting with Nixon.

A #JapanPolitics thread (Part 2): The assassination of former Prime Minister Abe has led to greater attention to the controversial relationship between conservative Japanese politicians and the Unification Church. Let’s look at what is being reported… pic.twitter.com/5shk9vDMMK

Abe’s assassin has made it clear that his goal was to strike at the Unification Church in Japan, and he appears to have succeeded beyond his wildest dreams. After a few days of dithering around, finally a sports outlet dropped the name of the organization the assassin had a grudge against. Then the Japanese press decided to report what it already knew, which was that the UC and the Liberal Democratic Party (Abe’s party and mostly in control of Japan since the end of WWII) were/are basically in bed together. Media outlets are now asking sharp questions about politicians’ activities. What’s hugely ironic is that some Japanese politicians taking aid from the UC are, at the same time, virulently anti-South Korea. The hypocrisy is astonishing, but typical for politicians.

I worry that the Proud Boys, Oathkeepers, III%, Boogaloos and who the hell knows what other right wing miltias, are carefully watching Ukraine and stocking up on drones.
That works both ways, and it has actually received quite a bit of thought and analysis among the genuine anti-fascist forces. The RWNJs are at a signiciant disadvantage in this type of operation. Drone warfare is one those things that seems a lot simpler than it really is, so fewer goobers have the inherent intelligence to pull it off. In particular, they are completely innocent of any kind of signals security, as they demonstrated many times on 1-6, which will make it easy to identify and track down their control signals. Drones also lack the psychosexual and performative appeal of firearms and personal bullying, and will therefore be of little interest to the righwing rank and file.

I think a lot of Japan’s wariness of cults or new religious movements is a result of the Tokyo subway sarin attack in 1995. Most Japanese, prior to that, figured that Aum Shinrikyo were just a bunch of harmless cranks, never realizing they had a straight-up doomsday cult in their midst until it was too late. Ever since then, the Japanese cast a skeptical eye towards NRMs or sectarian offshoots of already-established religions.
The Aum Shinrikyo attack was a wake-up call. And it seems the assassination of former PM Abe is becoming another one.

What I’ve read is that there were attempts in 1995 by a group of lawyers who have filed suits against the UC to get “contributions” back to have the government take a closer look at the UC, but they were downplayed or ignored. And that’s because the LDP was in bed with the UC. So, unlike other cults / new religions in Japan that had a bad time post 1995 even if they weren’t Aum, UC was allowed to continue to flourish. In fact, UC isn’t known as UC in Japan anymore. Its official name is now “Family Federation for World Peace and Unification”. There is some question as to which politician(s) gave their approval for the name change. (ETA: Seriously, that’s a question being asked.)

It’s interesting that the LDP’s major coalition partner is Komeito, which was founded in the 1960s by members of the Buddhist organization Soka Gakkai. Komeito (or New Komeito, I guess) claims that it hasn’t had any formal relations with Soka Gakkai since the early ’70s, but analysts note that Soka Gakkai forms its major constituency and thus continues to be an arm of the religious organization. Anyway, in those terms SG’s influence over even LDP politics is far greater than UC (no trying to downplay the influence of UC).

Right…there’s a lot of “what about Komeito?” going on right now, but I think the Japanese press can only handle one cult at a time, kind of like the US press and political issues.

Nichiren Buddhism is rather nationalistic and does not disavow the use of violence against those who would offend the Buddha.
Would that make people who annoy the Enlightened one “Buddha pests”?
I think that’s what gave rise to Soka Gakkai. Nichiren were big supporters of Imperial Japan’s ambitions in Asia, so they had to reset after the war. I don’t know much except that they use familiar tactics—shades of Scientology—of recruiting celebrities to become members and targeting those isolated from society (but the same can be said of Tenrikyō, Pure Liberty religion, etc., etc.).

Some guy who was leaving water stations in the desert for migrants… used that as his defense. Pretty sure it was in Arizona, or maybe it was New Mexico. The State and/or County and/or Border Patrol didn’t like that argument at all, said he was an accomplice to illegal immigration… but the jury found it persuasive. He was acquitted.
Scott Warren. The government was so intent on getting a conviction that after the first hung jury they put him on trial again. The second jury acquitted him after three hours deliberation.
Warren, a 37-year-old geography teacher from Ajo, Ariz., and others with No More Deaths carry jugs of water, food, first-aid kits and other supplies for migrants traversing the Arizona desert.
His lawyers have argued for years that their work is not illegal because they are offering humanitarian assistance to desperate border crossers regardless of legal status, a perspective the jury affirmed in fewer than three hours of deliberations. Warren’s legal team also maintained that his aid work is in accordance with his religious beliefs that instruct him to help those in need.

Appropriate transmission mitigation protocol is 🧼hand hygiene, ↔️social distancing, avoid close contact and if you have to, use barriers such as 🧤gloves (and dispose of them properly). If you are 🌡️sick, stay the 🤬 at home.

To be fair, Jōdo Shinshū were big supporters of Imperial Japan’s “Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere”, but they formally apologized for that.
BTW, the Buddhist Churches of America, the American branch of Jōdo Shinshū, has been performing same-sex marriages for a very long time indeed. The first Buddhist same-sex marriage ceremony in the US (albeit, a purely religious affair) was a Jōdo Shinshū ceremony in the early 1970s performed at the Buddhist Church of San Francisco.
The first known Buddhist same-sex marriages took place in the early 1970s, at the Buddhist Church of San Francisco. Founded in 1899, it’s the oldest surviving temple in the mainland United States. It’s also part of the oldest Buddhist organization outside Hawaii: the Buddhist Churches of America (BCA), part of the Shin tradition of Pure Land Buddhism.
During the Nixon years, the LGBTQ rights movement was picking up, and San Francisco was one of the primary centers of both activism and community building. Located not far from the famously gay Castro District, the Buddhist Church of San Francisco (BCSF) was attended by singles and couples, gay and straight. As consciousness rose, people began to seek the same services that heterosexuals already enjoyed in American society.
A male couple in the congregation eventually asked Rev. Koshin Ogui, then assigned to BCSF, to perform their marriage. He readily agreed, and the ceremony was held in the main hall—identical to other marriages at the temple, except for the dropping of gender-based pronouns in the service. Without fanfare, history was made.
Soon other BCA temples were also conducting same-sex marriages, and by the time of my research into the subject in the early 2010s, I couldn’t find a single minister in the scores of BCA temples who was unwilling to preside over same-sex weddings. Indeed, BCA ministers had already performed marriages for gay and lesbian couples, bisexuals, transgender people, and polyamorous groups. Many of these were interracial marriages, or carried out for non-Buddhists who had nowhere else to go, though most were for members of local BCA temples.

They’re a pretty progressive bunch over at the BCA. They’re the only religious group I’ve ever donated money to (granted, it was only $25 during a fundraising event for Oregon Buddhist Temple back in the 1990s to refinish the pews and some restoration work for the main altar).
My ex-wife dabbled in Nichiren Buddhism at one point in the early oughts, I never paid enough attention to it or their teachings to form much of an opinion about it, other than that it had absolutely no appeal to me at all.

I used to hang out with the Hare Krishnas in Bloomington because they offered free Sunday dinners and the cafeteria was closed after Sunday breakfast.
A friend of mine hangs out with the Krishas in London, she says she likes the community and helps with their food services and sometimes gets to attend a retreat at George Harrison’s estate.
