Reuters Busted by a 13-Year Old

Fri, Aug 10, 2007 at 9:18:53 am PDT

The top-quality fact-checking that can only be achieved by large media corporations is on fine display today, as Reuters is caught by a 13-year old Finnish schoolboy representing photos from the movie “Titanic” as pictures from the Russian North Pole expedition: Reuters gets that sinking feeling.

News agency Reuters has been forced to admit that footage it released last week purportedly showing Russian submersibles on the seabed of the North Pole actually came from the movie Titanic.

The images were reproduced around the world - including by the Guardian and Guardian Unlimited - alongside the story of Russia planting its flag below the North Pole on Thursday last week.

But it has now emerged that the footage actually showed two Finnish-made Mir submersibles that were employed on location filming at the scene of the wreck of the RMS Titanic ship in the north Atlantic some 10 years ago.

This footage was used in sequences in James Cameron’s 1997 blockbuster about the 1912 disaster.

The deception was only revealed after a 13-year-old Finnish schoolboy contacted a local newspaper to tell them the images looked identical to those used in the movie.

The Finnish boy’s name, by the way, is Waltteri Seretin. (Hat tip: LawHawk.)

There are still far too many people that don't pay close enough attention to realize the scope of the news quality problems in the major producers.

Reuters couldn't be bothered with truth to save their lives (clearly, look at their reporting of the War on Terror). So it's no surprise that they have no integrity anywhere else.

I wouldn't mind seeing a bigger screen cap or video either if anyone owns that abominable movie and has the time.

I'm still confused about whether this is the Leonardo film or a documentary.

If it was a documentary, they could just have some shared stock footage which isn't AS bad (though it's still a lie), but if they took it from a sound stage that is beyond laughable.

While a lot of this gotcha stuff in regards to these blunders in the news stories used to be funny, they aren't anymore. I am really getting a sinking feeling in my gut wondering whether anything that was passed off as news while I was growing up and until the advent of internet really contained all the facts. In other words I am starting to have some serious doubts or concerns about what I thought I knew of events are not real. It seems the only things I can trust anymore are my own experiences or things I had first hand knowledge of.

I'll second that. Everyone wants to be Woodward or Bernstein, bring a president down, splash a cool story, never mind the fact checking, rooting around, getting dirty that goes along with being a reporter. Once upon a time, in my young pup days, I gave consideration to that as a profession, but even then, it was getting to be a leftist rathole, and even as a naive pup I could see that I didn't want to be a part of that. It's too bad. I really enjoyed being on the school paper in HS.

There's never an excuse for lazy journalism, it doesn't matter one bit where they got the footage. They falsely represented their 'news' product to world, as usual. There is no lessening of blame possible.

Well if that's the case we need to be careful not to put our emphasis on the film, and more on the fact that they used the wrong photos. It's still ridiculously stupid of them, but if we aren't careful with our own fact checking we won't make as strong a case. The main fact is that they sure weren't photos of the Russian mission.

71 starbird  Fri, Aug 10, 2007 9:41:40am

Slightly OT, but while we're talking about scrabbling around on the sea floor, take a look at this:

A few grafs from this to show a link to irrational 'science':

As the climate began to warm up near the end of the Ice Age about 10,000 years ago, people were moving into Northern Europe and settling down in the many river valleys left behind by melting glaciers, Momber explained. Many of the valleys, such as the ones now beneath the English Channel, were eventually inundated completely when temperatures returned to normal.

But it has now emerged that the footage actually showed two Finnish-made Mir submersibles that were employed on location filming at the scene of the wreck of the RMS Titanic ship in the north Atlantic some 10 years ago.

This footage was used in sequences in James Cameron's 1997 blockbuster about the 1912 disaster.

So it's documentary footage that was used in the movie.

Also:

Reuters has admitted that it took the images from Russian state television channel RTR and wrongly captioned them as file footage originating from the Arctic.

RTR had also used the footage to illustrate stories about the North Pole expedition, but it is thought as library footage, and it never claimed it was actually of the flag-planting.

What a great moronic convergence. That awful movie imported so much anachronistic schlock into a real story that had enough riveting material to produce a library of dramas to score some really cheap historical revisionism. Now it is being pressed into the service of other fantasy spinners.

It took longer to watch the stupid movie than for the RMS Titanic to sink, but at least Leo D. got it in the end. Too bad his public visibility didn't end there.

Jimmy Kimmel did a bit during his monologue last week about the Russians and their North Pole expedition, by showing a clip from the 1970 Rankin/Bass stop-motion animation Christmas TV special, Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town. The voices were dubbed over with Russian accents, and Santa tells everyone that all they have for Christmas is "Wodka!". The elves start chanting, "Wodka! Wodka! Wodka! Wodka!", and Mrs. Claus chimes in with, "Wodka makes me horrrr-ny". Hilarious.

94 bikermailman  Fri, Aug 10, 2007 9:50:16am

I had a subscription to Newsweek back in the 80s, it was one of the more centrist weeklies at the time. I hadn't read it in over 15 years, til this week. They had the 'global warming deniers' story on the cover, and I wanted to see what garbage they had to say. It was really disgusting to see. They had a timeline that showed the first observation of warming in the 1890s, then quite literally skipped to 1979, and the current hysteria. They jumped over the some four (maybe?) flip-flops the scientists and newsies have done on cooling/warming, and even ignored their own story in '75 on 'the coming ice age'. It was filled with invective, half truths, and misdirection. I believe it was the senior editor that wrote the durned thing! While looking at other articles, it was the same thing. Opinions and attack all through what are supposed to be straight news stories. They even had a story on Murdoch and Ailes, doing 'all-out war' on the future of journalism. They photoshopped a picture, two bodies in suits, maybe them, maybe not, took their heads and made them 50% bigger, then put even bigger kevlar helmets on them. It's obviously 'shopped, and journalistic ethics say that if a picture is 'shopped, it's supposed to clearly say so.

At what point will this genre of story get big enough for a John Stossel or similar to do an expose informing those that will hear that the major news feeds in the world are run by a bunch of bumbling fools?

Isn't that what the Daily Show, Colbert Report, and Half Hour News Hour do? :-p

As much as Democrats and Republicans struggle to find things that they admit to agreeing on, that the media is terrible is something shared by everyone.

Thunder Birds, brilliant.

The Iranians talk tough but the reality is the US military has a good history of learning from their mistakes in Vietnam and the Israeli losses in the Yom Kippur War to constantly develop better weapons to destroy enemy air defenses. Though Iranian Commander never names an "enemy," he doesn't believe his air shield to stand against a joint air defense suppression strike by a battle tested military. If he does he's a fool.

And people get Journalism degrees for what, exactly?

That's the problem with media today: to d*mn many journalists and not enough reporters.

I was the editor of my High School newspaper. And I still got kicked out of the meetings!

And the moral of the story is: If you reprint stories from Russian State-run media without fact-checking, you deserve whatever scorn the world heaps on you.

Reuters: Fooled by Another Fake Iraq 'Massacre'

BAGHDAD, Aug 5 (Reuters) - Iraqi police said on Sunday they had found 60 decomposed bodies dumped in thick grass in Baquba, north of Baghdad.

There was no indication of how the 60 people had been killed, police said.

According to an Aug. 8th letter from Major Rob Parke of the U.S.Army

Bob,

This story is false.

As Warner Todd Huston asks:

How many times do we have to see the MSM reporting on a "massacre of Iraqi civilians" that turns out to be a false story planted by our enemies before we can definitively say that the MSM is purposefully aiding and abetting the terrorists?

169 mbabbitt  Fri, Aug 10, 2007 10:48:50am

This kind of story unveils at least two significant features of modern MSM work: 1) pure laziness -- not working to get real photos of the area and, more importantly, 2) not really caring about truth or honesty -- as long as it suits their purpose(s), who cares if it's true or not? It speaks volumes about their dedication to that all too rare quality called integrity -- the slippery slope to moral and ethical decay in full display. Now you can see why propaganda (parading as journalism) to advance their political agenda is so well accepted -- and not even recognized; the truth? What's that?

re: #170 JamesTKirk

Google Image search for Kate Winslet, if that's what you need.

Then take one of the frames of her naked, and submit it to Reuters with the caption "Another topless protester calls for the impeachment of President Bush." See if they run it.

Look, I know this is for a good cause and all, but wasn't it bad enough having that visual sprung on us unaware the first time?

I questioned the support ship in this Russian expedition yesterday.

Now I'm questioning if they even made it to the North Pole. And if they did, did they just throw a weighted flagpole over the side?

WHAT
CLAIM?,

re: #138 Ghengis Khan

I mean seriously, I'm as angry at the leftist MSM as the rest of you, but you cannot possibly mean to say that you think they used that photo on purpose!? Were they trying to subliminaly equate the north pole expedition to sunken ocean liners, thereby scaring people even more with the imminent doom of global warming? Come on... This is just stupidity, not deliberate lying.

The 'romance' with the communist/totalitarian system is such that they will do anything to portray it in a 'oh wow, look at what the commies are pulling off', when in reality this is about as quality of work that comes from them....BEHOLD...THE RUSSIAN Playstation 3!

It is the Russian government that is doing the lying and Reuters not doing the fact-checking. One is evil and one is incompetent. Does that clarify this?

I'm not as surprised as I would have been had I not known that Italy allowed "honor" as an admitted legal defense until 1981.

Prior to its reversal, an article existed in the Italian Criminal Code that provided a reduced penalty of imprisonment of only three to seven years for a man who killed his wife, sister or daughter to vindicate his or his family's honor.

See, we're not really so far apart from these islamists, after all.

re: #144 Sharmuta

I'll take that. I just didn't want us to give the impression we think Rueters did this on purpose, because Kos Kidz don't like to give us the benefit of the doubt. Then again, they don't like to give us anything beneficial anyway. Unless their slime can be used as a spa treatment or something.

My opinions are often misread on the internet, perhaps because I want to be cautious about making any kind of accusation. I'm a bleeding red conservative AND a student journalist (and not all journalists are evil you know)

Genghis - your bio above explains a lot. I, too, am a journalist - or 'reporter' as someone on this thread correctly describes what newspeople all should be doing. You can made judgments.
You can be careful about your facts. After my many years as a writer, I can make the following accusations: a) the Russian government is evil.
b) the majority of members of the MSM lean far, far to the left.
c) Reuters is full of incompetent boobs.

I could go on, but you get the idea.

Thanks for the biggest laugh I've had all week, Reuters.

The truth about news agencies began to dawn on me about five years ago when I saw two AP stories in a row filled with basic grammar and spelling errors. At first I could not believe what I was looking at.

Heh. al-Reuters gets truthed by a 13-year-old. ROTFLMFAO

Reuters busted again. Better change Reuters to Fauxtographers News Agency.

194 Infidelsalwayswin  Fri, Aug 10, 2007 2:05:44pm

Didn't Reuters used to be a legitimate news agency? Or am I thinking about something different with a similar, foreign-sounding name?

195 aussie_dave  Fri, Aug 10, 2007 2:25:28pm

Reuters is a disgrace I can't believe they still exist in the market.

Did they put out the Titanic pictures before inserting burning buildings and weapons caches?

re: #100 Ghengis Khan

I gotta get going, but as a last comment in case my questioning left ANYONE in doubt. Rueters should burn for this. They lie and lie and lie and get away with it every single time. Stories like this one make it hard to tell whether its just incompetence or deliberate evil behind them. Adnan Hadjj had something to gain from his slanted photos, yet this story just needed a photo and they were too lazy to get a real one. This is BAD journalism...

If it were mere incompetence, then 50% of the time, the "mistakes" should favor the right. Since the errors which are exposed favor the left 100% of the time, it is purposefully done. Being an uncritical megaphone for the worst regimes in the world is purposeful and evil.

BREAKING NEWS FROM REUTERSGIANT FIRE BREATHING DINOSAUR DESTROYING DOWNTOWN TOKYO!

YES!
Trance Formicons threatening downtown San Francisco

OH NO! THERE GOES TOKYO! GO GO GODZILLA!

That's "G-dzilla", if you please.

There is no Godzilla but Allahzillah!

The Japanese rendition is a lot closer to Gojira, to which a buddy of mine observed that the damn Japs don't even know how to pronounce Godzilla. Cultural imperialism at its finest.
