Yeah, but these bones are actually from the detritus of the Great Flood. Noah just didn't get this guy on the Ark- So Sorry!
Either that, or God put a series of fossils into the sedimentary strata all over the Earth. He created this just to make us think that the earth is older than the Bishop of Usher says it is.
Okay, a mega sarc tag goes in here- it should not be necessary, but just in case ...

Just wait for the second season, ice. You'll love it. I've seen every 2nd season episode at least in part and it is superbly good. When I first started watching season 2, I thought that the decision to make an evangelical church (The Fellowship of The Sun) a evil organization was over-the-top. After reading what fundamentalists have been saying lately, I know longer think that. Oh, there are exaggerations to be sure. But the dogmatic certainty and refuse to consider the views of outsides rings very true.

You ask a good question, the two phenomena are connected. Both their compulsion to leave when then they disagree with what the blog owner is doing and their need to later regress to an infantile hostility are symptoms of their underlying emotional and intellectual immaturity, naturally there is narcissism involved as well, thus a desire for attention and acceptance.

Many are closer to neurosis, border line personalities, sociopathic, that sort of thing, and sure, a good deal of paranoia.
We also see a sort of infantile regression, they are on best behaviour, sometimes for years on this forum, making friends, winning approval and such, and then they reveal their true uncouth nature, the beast within.

Say Hello to Idaho's Newest Railroad; WATCO's Boise Valley Railroad.
I suspected something was up when I saw a number of positions on the WATCO HR website were posted with the location of 'To Be Determined, Idaho'. My first thought was that maybe Union Pacific was casting off it's Twin Falls, ID-Silver Bow, MT line, since UP's presence in Montana is pretty marginal. I didn't consider that WATCO would be taking the reins from an already-existing shortline operator. They already have two other railways in Idaho (the Eastern Idaho Railroad and Great Northwest)...now they take over from Rio Grande Pacific's Idaho Northern & Pacific railway.

Prince Charles urges people to abandon car in favour of walking and public transport
The Prince, who has two Jaguars, two Audis, a Range Rover and still drives an Aston Martin given to him by the Queen on his 21st birthday, said developers had a duty to put public transport and the pedestrian at the heart of their housing schemes.Speaking about the “domination of the car over the pedestrian”, the future King said: “We must surely be able to organise ourselves... in ways in which we are not dependent on it to such a great extent for our daily needs."
The Prince said the principle of “elevating the pedestrian above the car” was one of the guiding factors of Poundbury – his model development in Dorset. The importance of “pedestrian friendly public space” is central to the Poundbury ethos.
No fan of Charlie Big-Ears here but he didn't say anything like what the headline seems to accuse him of saying. Still, it seems incredibly tone-deaf for a wealthy old man with a boatload of cars himself to talk about others needing to give up their own cars for any reason.

There is something very strange about it. Some of it is the normal weirdness that happens online, where people are shed of their identities. The anonymity makes it easy for people to be cruel to each other, but it also makes it very easy for people to create and project their own psychological needs and fantasies onto other people. Often they are rage-filled fantasies. That's why people develop something like hate for other people, who they don't even know at all-- just an internet persona.
And some people are using their persona as a subsitute for real life. That's why they have all these fantasies about how 'unfair' it is that they're banned and scream about how they deserve to 'defend' themselves. From what? It's a big internet. Start your own blog.
And some people use the community here as a substitute for real community. That's why they're tortured by the idea of people here thinking badly of them.
Suppose I got banned and completely unfairly and in teh worst way possible-- suppose CJ announced my IP proved I was the founder of StormFront, or something like that. Just made a mistake or someone gave him bad info or whatever.
Obviously I'd be hurt and upset. Suppose I emailed him and he didn't answer.
i still wouldn't be over at 2.0, or starting a site called "CJ is a poopy-head", or crying about my 'internet reputation' or 'defending myself'. I already have the emails of people here I'm close with, and they're not internet relationships but offline as well. It wouldn't matter to my life, or change my opinion of the site or CJ. There's something very weird about the people who can't move on.

Good points all. I have done my part to promote LGF as a great institution these last 8 years but I still can't imagine being emotionally devastated if I were removed from it.
I was in fact removed from it most of the time while I was in Iraq in 2005-06. Iraq had internet service, obviously, but for reasons that would take too long to explain, I just could not get on the net reliably enough to participate much here. It was during that period that some of the big changes really started, apparently including a huge flame war that Charles had to stop.

Re: Flouncing
It seems to me there is a mentality among some that since this is a community styled blog that this blog is about the community. And to an extent this is true- the community at LGF is a part of this blog. However, the problem arrises when folks forget that the real force behind LGF is Charles Johnson. When that happens, folks seem to forget that you can't spell "me" with "littlegreenfootballs". In other words- LGF isn't about them. Learning this traumatizes their sense of self, and the only correction to the ego displacement is to lash out and show that Johnson guy that they are the force behind a blog. Hence- the flounces and arrivals at the stalker blog.

You make a lot of interesting observations in that post. I would quibble on just a few points, any community, even a virtual one is "real," it simply operates on different terms. Certainly some "personas" here and elsewhere online are role playing fantasies, but most are also windows into a more honest persona than the face we "prepare to meet the faces that [we] meet."
You also point out a key ingredient, some [many?] of the flouncers are seeking a form of communal acceptance that they are not capable of achieving in real life, on the lines of "patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel" they have joined in choral outrage of some issues, and built orthodoxy and bias to serve as bulwarks for their lazy intellects and lack of maturity. When those fabrications are challenged they feel threatened and vulnerable, thus they lash out and continue to demand attention despite rejection.

Hey FBV, good to see you.
i was just reading this cover story in Vanity Fair about William Manchester and the book he wrote about the JFK assassination. I have to say it creeped me the fuck out. Look at these paragraphs...It would be very easy to change the name kennedy to Obama and we're seeing similar things:
Manchester also discovered that Dallas “had become the Mecca for medicine-show evangelists … the Minutemen, the John Birch and Patrick Henry Societies, and the headquarters of [ultra-conservative oil billionaire] H. L. Hunt and his activities.”
“In that third year of the Kennedy presidency,” Manchester wrote, “a kind of fever lay over Dallas country. Mad things happened. Huge billboards screamed, ‘Impeach Earl Warren.’ Jewish stores were smeared with crude swastikas.…Radical Right polemics were distributed in public schools; Kennedy’s name was booed in classrooms; corporate junior executives were required to attend radical seminars.” A retired major general ran the American flag upside down, deriding it as “the Democrat flag.” A wanted poster with J.F.K.’s face on it was circulated, announcing “this man is Wanted” for—among other things—“turning the sovereignty of the US over to the Communist controlled United Nations” and appointing “anti-Christians … aliens and known Communists” to federal offices. And a full-page advertisement had appeared the day of the assassination in The Dallas Morning News accusing Kennedy of making a secret deal with the Communist Party; when it was shown to the president, he was appalled. He turned to Jacqueline, who was visibly upset, and said, “Oh, you know, we’re heading into nut country today.”
Manchester discovered that in a wealthy Dallas suburb, when told that President Kennedy had been murdered in their city, the students in a fourth-grade class burst into applause.

There really is a fair amount of continuity between the JFK haters of 1963 and the ODS crazies of today. The Hunt brothers, for example, are gone but people they knew and influenced are still very active in right-wing politics.
In very general terms, the very rapid pace of technological and social change has tended to obscure just how much history passes within one person's lifetime. In terms of lives, and the persistence of living memory, the Civil War was not that long ago. As a child, I met people who could remember the Civil War. There were even veterans of the Civil War still alive when I was very small, though I never met any of them. My grandmother (born in 1905 and still very much with us) knew a number of Civil War veterans and former slaves.
As a student at North Texas State in the 1970s, I worked on an oral history project that involved interviewing some very elderly people who could remember life in the Dallas area in the 1880s. Today, as I struggle to keep up with computer technology and technique, I am awestruck remembering that I spoke personally to a gentleman who could clearly recall the first time he saw electric lights. They were part of a big exhibit at the Texas State Fair in 1882. "You can't imagine what a couple of hundred electric bulbs look like to someone who has never seen one before," he said.
I struggle with broadband providers, and I remember the lady who described the uncanny experience of speaking on a telephone for the first time, at age 8 in 1885.
It all makes me wonder if so much has changed, or if we just think it has. In particuar, I wonder which of today's attitudes and beliefs really do date directly from slave times and their immediate aftermath.

The only significant difference is that now, such things are much more widespread thanks to the Internet, instead of being confined to more isolated regions.
I'm sure that the mouth-breathers over at Stormfront think of these times past as "The Golden Age" and are working hard to bring about it's return.
One other thing that's probably different, but is kept under wraps for good reason: a lot of these groups are now heavily infiltrated by law enforcement. The FBI wisely realized a long time ago that you were never going to get rid of the KKK, for example; the best you could do was drive them underground. Their strategy since has been to allow such groups to exist, but to get agents in place so anything beyond beer-swilling and insult swapping in somebody's garage gets squelched before it even gets started. It gives the nuts a chance to blow off steam internally, and keeps the good guys out ahead of them.
I'm hoping a similar strategy has been adopted for similar groups. Although should it ever come to light, there will be hell to pay to the civil libertarians.

U.S. to push for new economic world order at G20
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States will urge world leaders this week to launch a new push in November to rebalance the world economy, but there are doubts national governments will bow to external advice.
A document outlining the U.S. position ahead of the September 24-25 Group of 20 summit in Pittsburgh said exporters, which include China, Germany and Japan, should consume more, while debtors like the United States ought to boost savings.
"The world will face anemic growth if adjustments in one part of the global economy are not matched by offsetting adjustments in other parts," said the document, which was obtained by Reuters on Monday.
The framework drafted by U.S. policy makers foresaw analysis of G20 members' economic policies by the International Monetary Fund to figure out if they were consistent with better balanced growth.
"We call on our finance ministers to launch the new framework by November," the document said, signaling a determined effort to maintain momentum for change created by last year's global financial crisis.
The United States envisages the IMF playing a central role in a process of "mutual assessment" by making policy recommendations to the G20 every six months.

Florida Gov. Crist back at Burger King in Miami for seconds
Gov. Charlie Crist insists it wasn't the chance to sample Burger King's new Bourbon Whopper and fire-grilled ribs that lured him to the company's Miami headquarters for the second time this month.
The calorie-conscious governor, forced by a plane delay to cut his Sept. 2 visit short, said he returned Monday ``to learn from people on the front end of what's happening in the economy and how government can get out of the way and maybe help.''
But a spokesman for Crist's rival for the U.S. Senate, Republican Marco Rubio, suggested campaign fundraisers are frequently keeping the governor in South Florida these days. He was slated to attend a $500-per-person reception Monday in Miami Beach.
``He has time to eat Whoppers and raise money, but he doesn't seem to have time to debate Marco Rubio on the issues,'' Rubio spokesman Alex Burgos said.
As discussed earlier at LGF, Rubio is a mad-dog creationist who is running against Crist for the GOP Senate nomination.

From The Hill: Bias hid ACORN’s nuts
People live in their own little worlds and have a tendency to shut out or ignore information that makes them uncomfortable. This is particularly true of liberal politicians and journalists, who find it easier and easier to ignore facts and developments that run counter to their view of how things ought to be.
This fact has been on stark display recently as liberals have dismissed anyone who questions the wisdom of President Barack Obama’s demands on our national priorities as cranks or, worse, racists. One can easily demonstrate one’s racist tendencies these days by simply attending town hall meetings or Tea Parties or coming to Washington to express views contrary to those of our president.
Nothing in years, however, brings this home as clearly as the way the media and the president have reacted to the unfolding story of how their friends at ACORN have misused public funds and engaged daily in a nationwide criminal conspiracy to rig elections and advised their “clients” on how to evade taxes and the law.

From the WSJ:
The 1930s has become the sole object lesson for today's monetary policy. Over the past 12 months, the Federal Reserve has increased the monetary base (bank reserves plus currency in circulation) by well over 100%. While currency in circulation has grown slightly, there's been an impressive 17-fold increase in bank reserves. The federal-funds target rate now stands at an all-time low range of zero to 25 basis points, with the 91-day Treasury bill yield equally low. All this has been done to avoid a liquidity crisis and a repeat of the mistakes that led to the Great Depression.
Even with this huge increase in the monetary base, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke has reiterated his goal not to repeat the mistakes made back in the 1930s by tightening credit too soon, which he says would send the economy back into recession. The strong correlation between soaring unemployment and falling consumer prices in the early 1930s leads Mr. Bernanke to conclude that tight money caused both. To prevent a double dip, super easy monetary policy is the key.

Looks like Democrats may need to be donating more campaign contributions to charity. Similar to Hillary's Chinese Wu, Obama has his Iranian Nemazee.
Hassan Nemazee, a fund-raiser for Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and other Democrats, has been indicted for defrauding Bank of America, HSBC and Citigroup Inc out of more than $290 million in loan proceeds, U.S. prosecutors said on Monday.
Nemazee, 59, typically donates more than $100,000 annually to Democratic political candidates. He is listed as one of the top "bundlers" of contributions to Obama's 2008 presidential campaign, according to OpenSecrets.org, a website run by the Center for Responsive Politics research group.

Honduran security breaks up pro-Zelaya demos
By FREDDY CUEVAS
TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) -- Honduran security forces are breaking up demonstrations in favor of deposed President Manuel Zelaya outside the Brazilian embassy where he has taken shelter.
Security Department spokesman Orlin Cerrato says the area around the embassy is under control of authorities as of Tuesday morning. There is no immediate word on any arrests or injuries.
Thousands of Zelaya supporters defied a curfew to spend the night around the embassy celebrating Zelaya's return to Honduras. He was ousted in a June 28 coup that most countries in the world say was illegal.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.
TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) - The daring return of deposed President Manuel Zelaya creates a sharp challenge to interim leaders who overthrew him - and for the upcoming election they had hoped would resolve the crisis begun with their coup.
Thousands of Zelaya supporters defied a curfew and spent the night surrounding Brazil's embassy, where the leader remained holed up Tuesday, a day after slipping back into the country. In exile since June 28, Zelaya said he had traveled for 15 hours overland in a series of vehicles to pull off the stealth homecoming.
The government of interim President Roberto Micheletti ordered a 26-hour shutdown of the capital Tegucigalpa beginning Monday afternoon, closed the airport and set up roadblocks on highways leading into town. The measures were taken to keep Zelaya supporters from flooding in for the sort of big protests that disrupted the city after his ouster.
But Zelaya loyalists ignored the decree and surrounded the embassy, dancing and cheering and using their cell phones to light up the streets after electricity was cut off on the block housing the embassy.
"We're here to support him and protect him, and we're going to stay here as long as it's physically possible," said Carlos Salgado, a 43-year-old jewelry maker from Zelaya's home state of Olancho.
Supported by the U.S. and other governments since his ouster, Zelaya called for negotiations with the leaders who forced him from the country at gunpoint. But Micheletti urged Brazil to turn Zelaya over to Honduran authorities for trial.

Meanwhile, back in the GWOT (or whatever it's called these days):
Philippine authorities said soldiers killed as many as 17 suspected members of the Abu Sayyaf terrorist group Sunday and discovered a heavily fortified bunker complex that appears to be the group's base of operations on an island that has given them years of trouble.
The discovery could explain why Abu Sayyaf has remained so elusive on the relatively small island of Jolo, about 590 miles south of Manila, despite years of U.S. military assistance and training in the area.
Philippine soldiers were tracking suspected Abu Sayyaf members when they stumbled on the complex, military officials said. The complex could accommodate as many as 500 people, and the various bunkers were connected by a network of trenches cut into the steep mountainside, said Ben Dolorfino, a lieutenant general in the Philippine army. During Sunday's six-hour battle, the military called in air strikes, he said.
Formed in the late 1980s with financing provided by Osama bin Laden's brother-in-law, Abu Sayyaf was intended to radicalize the Philippines' more established Muslim insurgency, but for a period it degenerated into kidnapping for ransom.
The group later attempted to attract the attention of al Qaeda-linked financiers by teaming up with militants in neighboring Malaysian and Indonesia, including members of the Indonesia-based Jemaah Islamiyah group, which orchestrated the Bali bombings. Philippine intelligence officials say Abu Sayyaf is still harboring two important Indonesian terrorist suspects, Umar Patek and Dulmatin, who are wanted for their alleged role in the 2002 Bali bombings, which killed over 200 people.
The Abu Sayyaf rebels themselves have planned major terrorist attacks across the Philippines, including the firebombing of a crowded ferry in Manila Bay in 2004 that killed 116 people.

Seems to me that without DNA analysis, and animal that predates another by 60 million years is an example of evolution choosing similarly functional forms over and over again, which it has been shown to do everywhere.
A good example is the duplication of form between mammals and marsupials.
In the extreme we share DNA with T-Rex too, so I'm not sure where this find proves anything new.

Ha...
Just heard the weather... up to a FOOT of snow tonight in the mountains.
January 10th 5:00PM It's starting to snow the first since we moved here and the first we have ever seen. The wife and I took our coffee and sat by the picture window watching the snowflakes drift down. The snow was clinging to the trees and covering the ground. It was beautiful.
January 11th We awoke to a lovely blanket of crystal snow covering the landscape. What a fantastic sight. Every tree and shrub covered with a beautiful white mantle. I shoveled snow for the first time and I loved it. I did both driveways and the sidewalk. Later the snow plow came by and accidentally covered the driveways and sidewalk with compacted snow from the street. The snow plow driver was a very friendly chap. He smiled and waved and I smiled and waved back as I shoveled snow from the driveways and sidewalk again.
January 12th It snowed an additional five inches and the temperature dropped to eleven degrees. Several tree limbs and most of the shrubs collapse from the weight of the snow. I shoveled our driveways again. The heck with the sidewalk. No one was going to be walking on it in this kind of weather anyway. Just as I was finishing up the driveways what should appear but the snow plow again. My driveways was covered with brownish gray snow and not so pretty anymore.
January 13th It warmed up enough during the day to create a lot of slush that turned to ice once the temperature dropped again. I went out and bought snow tires for both cars. I invented a new dance trying to stay on my feet as I walked up the slippery driveway. Then I fell all over the place and finally made a three point landing. I didn't break anything but paid the chiropractor five hundred dollars to line every thing in my body back up again. The forecast is calling for more snow tonight. Both cars are covered with salt and crud.

January 14th Still cold enough to freeze fire. Sure enough there was another eight inches of snow fell during the night. I rushed out before the snow got any deeper and bought a four by four so I could take my wife to work. On the way home the four by four slid into a guard rail and did a bunch of damage to the right quarter panel.
January 15th The thermometer is showing two degrees outside. And it is almost that cold in the house. There was more dad-blasted snow fell and I tried to keep from freezing to death by burning candles and lighting the kerosene heater. Then I tripped over the kerosene heater and almost burned the house down. There were third degree burns on my face and hands but I did get the fire put out. Looking in the mirror I discovered my eyelashes and eyebrows were gone. I looked plumb funny. The car slid and my wife ran right into the hospital wall when parking in front of the emergency room. The car was almost totaled. Still being sore from the other fall I was unable to walk into the emergency room. They had to cart me in on a stretcher.
January 16th More snow. More dad-gummed snow. It has continued to fall all day long. It just wont stop. I put on all the clothes I own to go to the mailbox to find the mail carrier doesn't deliver mail in three foot of snow. My body temperature must have been thirty-four degrees by the time I was back in the house. I shoveled snow three more times to have the snow plow come through and cover the driveways again. I shook the shovel at the snow plow driver and he just grinned. The power went out, the toilet froze and part of the roof caved in from the weight of the snow and ice. Why would anyone in their right mind move here?
January 17th Six more inches of snow fell and hard telling what else fell last night. I threw the snow shovel at the snow plow driver when he covered my driveways with slush again. My wife said I was crazy and she took the four by four and left. The other doggone car wont start and I'm going snow blind. I can't move my toes or my fingers. More snow is predicted; With a wind chill minus twenty-two degrees. New England is one place I never want to see again as long as I live. I hate this place. If I can make it to the Greyhound bus station, I'm going back to the Mississippi Gulf Coast and stay there the rest of my life.

Called ArtPrize, it's the biggest prize offered in the art world. $250k for first, $100k for second. It's been very cool for our city and my kids are loving seeing huge sculptures popping up around town, including a "Nessie" popping up in our river. The interesting thing is, the art-world proletariat gets to vote via social networks; no jury of experts. Is this the ruin of art or a great thing?

Obama is talking right now at the UN about the US approach to climate change.
And the EU is not impressed...
European officials say the Obama administration lacks focus because its top talent is wrapped up in the all-consuming debate over healthcare.
Prompted by remarks last week by Harry Reid, the US Senate majority leader, that cap and trade legislation might be pushed back to next year, John Bruton, the EU ambassador to the US, blamed the Senate for holding up the global agenda.
“Sometimes in this country, the greatest deliberative body in the world [the Senate] acts as though it is the only deliberative body in the world and that we should all wait until it gets healthcare passed,” he said.
“There is a global timetable and the US Senate is fully aware of it . . . The world cannot wait on the Senate’s timetable.”

I'm a member on another web forum that strictly enforces rules of proper grammar and netiquette. They ban people (either temporarily or permaban) by the dozens every day for breaking the rules, and they publicly post the infractions and any replies they may receive. It's rather amusing to see people get so bent out of shape when it would've been the simplest thing in the world to read the posted forum rules and abide by them.

Interesting...
For Afghanistan, the process to decide on a course change began in March of this year, when Bruce Reidel was tasked to assess the situation. This produced the much-heralded yet vague "AfPak" assessment. Then, in May, General David McKiernan was fired and replaced by General McChrystal, who took command in June. General McChrystal's assessment hit President Obama's desk at the end of August, almost three months after he took command. And yet now in the last half of September, the decision on additional forces has yet to be submitted to the administration.
Contrast this with Iraq in the fall of 2006. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld was fired just one day after the elections in early November. The Keane-Kagan plan for Iraq was submitted to President Bush shortly afterward, and encompassed both the assessment of the situation and the recommended course of action, including the recommended number of troops to be deployed to deal with the situation. General David Petraeus replaced General George Casey in early February 2007, and hit the ground running; the surge strategy was in place, troops were being mustered to deploy to Iraq, and commanders on the ground were preparing for and executing the new orders. The first of the surge units began to arrive in Iraq only weeks later, in March.
Today, the military is perceiving that the administration is punting the question of a troop increase in Afghanistan, and the military is even questioning the administration's commitment to succeed in Afghanistan. The leaking of the assessment and the report that McChrystal would resign if he is not given what is needed to succeed constitute some very public pushback against the administration's waffling on Afghanistan.

Right now I am feeling rather disgusted with things. Australian Channel Nine's 60 Minutes broadcast on Friday, 18 September that, "Hundreds of thousands of Jewish settlers are moving into the West Bank, building new towns on Palestinian land." This is a gross overstatement at best and a damn lie at worst in an attempt to brand Israel as "stealing" Palestinian land. Than all that dreck aside, why is it that many Palestinians live in peace in cities like Tel Aviv, but a bare handful of Jews living in the West Bank is an atrocity? Why cannot "Palestinians" join their Jewish neighbours in building a their homes and livelihoods? But no, they seem bent on a culture of hate, envy and death.
Former President Carter, the worst president the U.S. has ever had the misfortune to elect (Buchanan giving him a good run for the title), asserts that racism is alive and well. The rampant anti-Semitism that he and the press demonstrate serve to indicate that Carter is correct, for once but for the wrong reason.

I actually got sidetracked during the fight. I ran into a scientist who was watching cartoons and somehow thought that was more interesting than the fight of the century. I'd go into more wacky detail but we all know how boring it is to hear someone recount their dreams. Actually, here it is anyway. The scientist was watching cartoons but it was actually a freeze frame of a comic strip on the TV. The words in the bubbles had been modified and were a direct message to the scientist (name Peter). He realized it was his colleagues doings as they all had a long history of pulling these types of "hacking pranks" on each other. We saw the other scientists through a large window in another room snickering. That's when I woke up. :)

Oh, no, there must be something wrong with this statement. Just two years ago, Bush tried (for the second time) to engage Congress in a plan to restructure SS in order to head off looming deficits in the program, and was told that SS was rock solid and didn't need any changes at all.

Indeed. Barney Frank and other democrats insisted Fannie and Freddie were just fine.

Bank of America not so American...again
GAFFNEY, S.C. -- The controversy about the placement of American flags to honor a fallen Marine from Gaffney could cost Bank of America some local government deposit money, and perhaps much more.
Monday night, the Cherokee County Council voted 5 to 1 to withdraw county money from any accounts held by Bank of America.
Councilman Quay Little said that totals more than $500,000, but that number could skyrocket. If all county officials close their accounts, Bank of America would lose more than $1.5 million in customer funds, Little said.
The controversy erupted last Wednesday when the body of a fallen Marine, Lance Cpl. Christopher Fowlkes, was brought back to Gaffney.
A woman claimed the Bank of America branch along the procession route would not allow her to place American flags in the Marine's honor on the bank's lawn. She said the bank manager removed them from the property.
Bank of America calls what happened a miscommunication about the company's flag policy.
Fowlkes died of injuries sustained in an explosion in Afghanistan. He is the first U.S. serviceman from Cherokee County to die in action since the Vietnam War.

Idiot's response to my worries about Iran; Notice the naive comment about the Iranians concern for the Pali's.
They view Israel as being a foreign imperialistic influence that is oppressing the Palestinians. The key issue here is that the Palestinians are being oppressed.
If Iran were to nuke Israel, it would be necessary to nuke Jerusalem. Jerusalem was the place where Abraham offered his son as a sacrifice (this gets commemorated in the holiest day in Islam, Eid al Adha or the Feast of the Sacrifice). Jerusalem was also the place from which Mohammed ascended to heaven on the back of his winged steed. In heaven, he met with the prophets including Jesus.
It is impossible to overemphasize this point. No believing Muslim will EVER nuke Jerusalem. We in Protestant Christianity don't have any real concept of a "holy space." The Muslims across the Middle East rioted when Israel preformed excavations NEAR Al Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock. Imagine what would happen if those places were destroyed by a nuclear bomb!

A couple million bucks won't be noticed by BoA. It may not even represent a significant fraction of local deposits.
And frankly, I have to side with the bank on this one. We acquiesed to a similar request to allow signage to be placed on the property of a business I used to work at, with the understanding that the group placing it would return to clean it up after a given date. Never happened. In our case, the signs were supported by stiff wires instead of the wood stakes they had shown as an example, leading to liabilty concerns if someone managed to put an eye out with one.
Sorry, but there are just way too many assholes in the world to take such chances. If the bank flies it's own flag, it would have been appropriate to lower it to half-mast, but I wouldn't let an individual or transitory group have such access to my private property.
If the Council really cared, they should have passed an emergency ordinance and taken over distribution, cleanup and obtaining liability insurance.
I'm putting this one in my "Better Things to Worry About" folder.

From Thomas Sowell today...
The Underdogs
...Many people would consider it a handicap to be a black orphan, born in the Jim Crow South during the Great Depression of the 1930s. But the home into which I was adopted had four adults and I was the only child. Many years later, when I was a parent and asked one of the surviving members of that family how old I was when I started walking, she said: "Oh, Tommy, nobody knows when you could walk. Somebody was always carrying you."You can't buy that. A leading historian of education has said that the New York City public schools were the best in the country during the 1940s. That was when I went to school there. That was enough piece of sheer good luck that came my way. Today the classes are smaller, the buildings more modern-- but the education itself is a disaster. I got the kind of education that people have to go to expensive private schools to get today.
Perhaps more important, nobody told me that I couldn't make it because I was poor and black, or that I ought to hate white people today because of what some other white people did to my ancestors in some other time.
Nobody sugar-coated the facts of racial discrimination. But Professor Sterling Brown of Howard University, who wrote with eloquent bitterness about racism, nevertheless said to me when I prepared to transfer to Harvard: "Don't come back here and tell me you didn't make it 'cause white folks were mean."
He burned my bridges behind me, the way they used to do with armies going into battle, so that they had no place to retreat to, and so had to fight to win.
One of the problems with trying to help underdogs, especially with government programs, is that they and everyone else start to think of them as underdogs, focusing on their problems rather than their opportunities. Thinking of themselves as underdogs can also dissipate their energies in resentments of others, rather than spending that energy making the most of their own possibilities. ...

The cha-cha-cha is just three small steps in a Latin dance but last night it was one giant step for Tom DeLay.
The former House Majority Leader stole the show on “Dancing With the Stars,” the popular cringe-fest D-list celebrity reclamation project on ABC.
Touted as the program’s “highest-ranking star,” DeLay partnered with ballroom pro (and two-time winner) Cheryl Burke for a booty-shaking, lip-syncing, winking number set to the tune of “Wild Thing.”

Not normally a big Leslie Gelb fan, but he makes some very valid points.
Er, uh, hm, er, uh...
I'm lost on President Barack Obama's Afghanistan policy—along with most of Congress and the U.S. military. Not quite eight months ago, Mr. Obama pledged to "defeat" al Qaeda in Afghanistan by transforming that country's political and economic infrastructure, training Afghan forces and adding 21,000 U.S. forces for starters. He proclaimed Afghanistan's strategic centrality to prevent Muslim extremism from taking over Pakistan—an even more vital nation because of its nuclear weapons. And a mere three weeks ago, he punctuated his commitments by proclaiming that Afghanistan is a "war of necessity," not one of choice. White House spokesmen reinforced this by promising that the president would "fully resource" the war.

Steven Chu: Americans Are Like ‘Teenage Kids’ When It Comes to Energy
Speaking on the sidelines of a smart grid conference in Washington, Dr. Chu said he didn’t think average folks had the know-how or will to to change their behavior enough to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.
“The American public…just like your teenage kids, aren’t acting in a way that they should act,” Dr. Chu said. “The American public has to really understand in their core how important this issue is.” (In that case, the Energy Department has a few renegade teens of its own.)

Here's where you're wrong. Americans do act like dumb teenagers when it comes to energy consumption. We waste so much energy in this country it's absurd. 8.35 tons of oil equivalent per person, per year. Much of it completely wasted because of inefficiency and easily correctable problems. Every dollar that isn't spent on wasted energy is a dollar that can be spent on something else.
I would have thought that conservatives would embrace pragmatic steps taken to reduce energy waste and reallocate those resources to something useful. But because it's a Democrat making the suggestion, Republicans huff and puff and whine about being "treated like a child." What ever happened to embracing good ideas? Encouraging simple solutions to complex problems?
It's the same exact situation as the election, when Obama suggested that every take the incredibly smart and simple step of checking their tire pressures to improve fuel economy. McCain and the GOP couldn't mock him enough for offering a pragmatic suggestion that would be of benefit to all Americans. I'm getting so goddamn sick of listening to good ideas get hammered, all because the GOP can't stop playing politics and clamoring about "elitism." Elites don't need to check their tire pressures and watch their energy bill because they're rich. Energy and gas are still damn cheap. The people who can benefit the most from these steps are average lower to middle-class Americans. The same people the GOP attempts to sway with this stupid faux-populist bullshit.

re: #514 drcordell
On the one hand, I agree with you, because I always thought minimizing pollution and waste should be a conservative value. On the other hand, I don't appreciate the lecture.
I'm the child of frugal and not-rich parents, so (among other things) I check my tire pressure regularly, and always have. I didn't need Obama the Wise to suggest it to me as if it were some brilliant new scheme. What would help me is not a tire gauge of my own - have one; thanks - but if gas stations would actually keep their stupid air pumps in usable condition.
As for improving the energy efficiency of my home, I rent. Any serious outlay I make on the property, I won't recoup in savings. So I don't do it. Ditto the landlord. Maybe every dollar I spent would save SOMEBODY more than a dollar in the future, but for ME, it's just a dollar spent. If I had the money to toss around altruistically like that, I'd be a homeowner instead of a renter.

"On the other hand, I don't appreciate the lecture""I didn't need Obama the Wise to suggest it to me as if it were some brilliant new scheme."
You embody the exact spirit of what I just mentioned. Checking your tire pressure is a smart, common sense thing to do. And yes, you already do it. But a vast majority of Americans don't. And instead of just nodding and saying good idea, you "don't appreciate the lecture" and "don't need Obama the wise" to tell you what to do. What's the problem with a good suggestion? Why do you feel so aggrieved that Obama is suggesting something helpful?
