The push is now on by the Administration to demonize the insurance companies.
Although frankly, having Obama's "former personal physician" deliver this message is tone-deaf in the extreme. I wonder if he'll be able to keep his personal physician, or if the rest of us will get our own, under nationalized health care? I also wonder if Dr. Scheiner, who objects to insurance companies telling him how to treat patients, will not object when it's the government telling him how to treat patients?

This is what I don't understand about people who are pouring out all the outrage over the current health-care proposals: Medicare is already a government mandated program, with taxes imposed to pay for it.
So if you accept Medicare as a legitimate function of the government, on what basis can one argue against broadening gov't mandated healthcare to those under age 65?

Didn't hear about that one, but there's an obvious full-court press on to vilify insurance companies in hopes of drumming up more support for the floundering health care initiative. You know - rather than actually craft a plan that people might actually support. It's an attempt to generate more demand for a public option to fight the big, bad insurance companies that are going to tell your doctor what to do. So the benificent government can tell them what to do, instead.
Given the smoke-filled-room deals the Administration was cutting with large insurers previously, I'm not sure how well this strategy is going to work. As I've said before, I think nationalized health care is largely dead, and the Dems will attempt to claim victory by passing some form of insurance regulation in it's place so they can say they did something. This may be the beginning of such a strategy.
They're certainly going to lose the backing of the insurance lobby over this.

Another question: if Medicare is so horribly inefficient that reform will net savings worth hundreds of billions over just a few years, why isn't the Administration and Congress working to fix those problems right now, regardless of how nationalized health care works out? If there's really that much negligence and waste, shouldn't that just be fixed, period, end of story? Why is fixing such an enormous waste being tied to the outcome of a completely unrelated issue?

Medicaid is means-tested, while Medicare is age-tested (and also for those with specified conditions.)
The concept though is essentially the same: the government by law takes taxes to pay for medical treatment. In one case the tax is called a "payroll tax", and in the other case the tax is just from the general income tax (from whatever source.)
I'm not too keen on what has been proposed so far, but I am finding it hard to engage in the kind of outrage that has been so popular in certain quarters.

A reasonable objection is the one provided by the government itself, which claims that these government-run programs will generate hundreds of billions of dollars worth of inefficiencies and waste over the next few years. Why would we want to expand a program that is so obviously broken and unable to contain it's own costs?

It may well be a red herring. But massive waste is what the Administration is claiming, and it's betting the ranch on the notion that cleaning up all that waste will be sufficient to expand the program to cover the entire nation, or some significant chunk of it. If this is bogus, then the promise of revenue neutrality swirls straight down the drain, and we're left either with increased taxes or significantly higher deficits.

While on the topic of healthcare, I was scrolling through the Beneifts portion of the Employment section of an unnamed Class 1 railway's homepage.
More often than not, the benefits for 'the Big 6' are touted right there; stock options, company-provided health insurance, tuition reimbursement or even a discount on some of the goods they ship (among others).
The first benefit this railway listed was to pay for gym membership. Now, lord knows I probably need to hit the gym. But to basically tell a conductor or maitnenence of way employee who's been lugging around heavy equipment or doing some very physical work during the long, hot summer 'Hit the gym, lardass' is...well...kinda insulting.
Having said that...aren't gyms basically pick up bars minus the booze (with extra sweat)? So if this company was dumb enough to hire me I hired on with this company, my cruising for hotties would be subsidized?

Ah, sweet Morpheus will descend upon me shortly. I hate taking something to help me sleep but, today's gonna' be a bitch and I need all the sleep I can get to deal with a very sick child.
I'll need to buy him stuff he can eat--he ate nothing yesterday but a lollipop, a giant sucker and a strawberry shake. I figured he needed the sugar to keep his strength up. And, I pumped as much water into him as he could take. So, I'll stock up on chicken soups, crackers, pop-sickles, Jello and juice, juice and more juice. Maybe Hawaiian Punch. Maybe some Sprite. Whatever it takes to keep him hydrated.
He'll be out of school until Wednesday or Thursday. I have home copies of his English, math and science books and his teacher will send his homework through her site and I'll have to pick up some assignments in person.
He was really upset getting the swaps done for the test to see if it's H1N1. He has this weird thing about his nose so it took three BIG nurses to restrain him. I had to leave to keep him from begging me to not make him do this despite my and the other's assurances that it had to be done, that it would take two seconds and that he could do it.
Someone--I think it was another doctor--walked up to me in the hall and started chastizing me in a superior and condescending tone, "If he can't be made to mind," but I ripped her head off. "He has a 103-degree fever and is irrational, disoriented and scared. What's YOUR problem?" Asshole backed off rather qiuckly. I bet she sucked at her pediatric rotation.
Kids his age with a high fever are not rational. This is the most serious illness he's ever had--he's not accustomed to feeling this bad nor is he accustomed to having his body poked and prodded and swabbed. He told me his eyleashes hurt before we got there. He wondered if it was the swine flu and got hysterical thinking he was gonna' die as other kids have died. Yes, it was a special treat flying down the highway with a sick, hystical and sobbing kid.
When the test came back positive, he wailed again that he didn't want to die. His doctor (not that idiot) firmly told him he wouldn't if he would take all the meds she was prescribing.
When I tucked him in (weaing exam gloves and a surgical mask) he started crying that he didn't want to die in his sleep. When I tried to reassure him that he wouldn't, he reminded me that other kdis have died with this. I told him that he was a very healthy child. He said, "but what if I die?"
I told him he'd go to Heaven. He said, no, he'd go to Paradise first and that the end of time, he'd go to Heaven. Then he started whining about the parties he'd miss this weekend, and the ball practice Saurday and the club on Sunday and and and.
Oh, Morpheus has descended.

re: #75 BignJames
One thing that gets me...if healthcare reform is so important to Obama, why didn't he come up with a plan, aided by his brilliant appointees...instead of tossing it to the morons in congress?
The official story or my opinion?
The official story is that he learned from the Clintons' mistakes -- Hillary wrote a detailed plan, wouldn't negotiate with congress to amend it, and that's why there was no one to stick up for it when the RNC got their anti going. Supposedly, by making Congress write the Bill, they'll be invested in protecting and defending it and it's more likely to get passed.
My view -- when he couldn't get Tom Daschle, he didn't have a B team. He knows very little about health care, doesn't even know who to appoint, just has a vague lofty notion that there should be some sort of plan... and he hoped Congress was up to the task.
I'm pretty happy with Obama's moves in several policy areas, lukewarm about others, but on health care I'm deeply disappointed. My highest health care hopes now rest with Chuck Schumer and Jay Rockefeller and Anthony Weiner.

Not so much. They're coming off a huge, extended rally - probably overextended - and they're bumping up against the psychologically important 10k barrier. Meanwhile, there's no real news - employers keep shedding jobs at the same dismal rate of ~half-million per month, home sales suck about as bad as they have for months, there's not going to be any increase in employment or consumer spending for many, many months, possibly not for a year...in short, things have hit bottom and seem to be pretty much staying there. Until there's an actual, measurable and sustained turnaround in hiring, we're just going to continue scraping hull, and the market's going to move sideways, at best.

Well, Zombie should be proud that his/her/its work is appreciated. WND is running more Holdren stories, this time by Corsi, who is using Zombie's material without credit, of course.
In fact, Corsi goes one better than Zombie and links Holdren ↔ climate change control initiatives ↔ population control ↔ abortion.
From Corsi's latest:
[...]As WND previously reported, a worldwide scientific agenda is emerging to link global population growth with global warming, arguing that climate change is such a severe crisis that the U.S. must participate in a United Nations mandate to implement global birth control to reduce carbon emissions.
A series of papers recently published by the Royal Society in Great Britain and by the United Nations have directly made the link between global population growth and anthropomorphic [sic], or man-made global warming. [...]

Hasn't China, the world's newest economic superpower and biggest polluter, already implemented mandatory population controls aimed at stopping its population growth?

Hasn't China, the world's newest economic superpower and biggest polluter, already implemented mandatory population controls aimed at stopping its population growth?
Under Mao the development of the 1 child policy went from idea to fruition later, though the effects are primarily being felt post-Mao. My own friends in China were from one-child families. In my friends' cases though they were the lucky ones - they are women, and they survived the gross onslaught of infanticide that happened until only recently (and may still be ongoing in certain areas.)
Nevertheless, wrt AGW, the big culprits until just recently have been the US, UK, and Germany, as historically the leading economic powers of the last two centuries.
Can we really avoid addressing the overpopulation issue simply because Ehrich's population projections were off by a few decades?
IMO it has never been fruitful, politically or socially, to center the discussion on population or population control. It is such a touchy subject, and as one can readily see from the Holdren affair, (who was merely going through the previously written ideas on the subject), no one who brings up the topic can escaped being tarred.
Does anyone really foresee the viability or desireability of an American population of a billion? Or 2 billion?
It is highly unlikely we will ever get that big. Currently the US is the 3rd most populous nation and will likely remain that way. Our birth rate is near ideal, thanks to immigrants having children. Our population grows by about 1%/yr, but most demographers (I gather after just perusing the subject) expect that to level off by bid century. IOW, we probably won't ever hit 500 million.

I propose the term "downdinking" for this behaviour. Usage: Bubba the Magnificent is a real downdinker.
Cf:
A term used to mean "Mess With" as in "I'm going to dink with that until it works". Along similar lines, in computer science, to increment or decrement a counter. "In counting from 4 to 6, it dinks the counter two times"
Also:
A 'jerk' or 'goof'

Not gonna happen. The US hasn't had positive population growth within it's native population for many, many years now; this is true of all or nearly all first-world nations. They only growth they experience is through immigration. The trend seems to be universal; China is having problems maintainint it's rural population - still essential for food production - and has recently lifted it's one-child policy in such regions.
The inevitable result is world population stabilization as more and more of the planet gains in economic level. The UN, in fact, predicts that world population will peak around 2050 if current trends continue, and decline thereafter, ultimately settling in at a few billion.

This really cheeses me off. Kerry asks $20m for Kennedy institute
WASHINGTON - A large military spending bill moving through Congress contains a little-noticed outlay for Boston that has nothing to do with national defense: $20 million for an educational institute honoring late Senator Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts.
The earmark, tucked into the defense bill at the request of Senator John F. Kerry of Massachusetts, requires US taxpayers to help the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate realize its goal of building a repository for Kennedy’s papers and...
J Fin Kerry sneaking that into a military spending bill adds insult to injury. That piece of garbage Kerry has no shame. My apologies to garbage.

I vote for a new tradition here on lgf - the tradition of the atrocious love song tradition. This one is just sublime, I think you'll agree, iceweaselski :)

Beautiful, Jimmahski. I'm overwhelmed. I second your motion, and emotion.
This is...perfect:
(I particularly adore that the subtitles misspell Nice. Uh...)
Sometimes I've been to crying for unborn children
that might have made me complete
but I, I took the sweet life
I never knew I'd be bitter from the sweet
I spent my life exploring
the subtle whoring
that costs too much to be free
hey lady I've been to paradise
but I've never been to me...
And the spoken word bridge sends me into gales of laughter every time.
Now that i think about it. I seriously want to do this in a karaoke bar.

Hey, on the whole kids singing the Obama song flare-up.
Did anyone else catch the most egregious part?
"Hello, Mr. President we honor you today!
For all your great accomplishments, we all doth say "hooray!"
Hooray, Mr. President! You're number one!
The first black American to lead this great nation!"
Isn't "doth" an archaic second person singular not a (slangy) first person plural?

Lovely. It's the spoken word bridge that does it for me too on that song. And now - something truly 'touching' ;-)

It really is hard to judge these days what is really worth getting upset about and what has already been spun a thousand times before you get it. So much info, so little time, so many agendas.
I would rather kids not sing to any Dear Leader, btw, right or left of the aisle.
