Washington Post Notices Beam in Eye

Blogosphere • Views: 2,340

Remember when the Washington Post’s Howard Kurtz labeled LGF commenters as “vile,” suggesting that blog comments need better policing?

Well, now the shoe is on the other foot, as the Washington Post’s ombudsman Andrew Alexander tries to explain how the Post is handling the Internet lunatics that infest their comments: Online readers need a chance to comment, but not to abuse.

HAH! They're going to have to either hire a moderator, or close off the comments. Good luck to them!

3 Eclectic Infidel  Sun, Apr 4, 2010 6:50:19pm

Well, if they don't hire someone full time to moderate each and every comment.....

4 Fat Bastard Vegetarian  Sun, Apr 4, 2010 6:50:50pm

This would be a very cool place for a deleted comment.

That "vile" story was before I was hatched.
Just sayin'.
Good Evening LGF.

Maybe Kurtz can advise Mr. Alexander.
Or they can both take a flying leap...

Well, yeah, but those advocates for the "transfer" of Palis (It's *not* ethnic cleansing! It isn't! Why? Because it's a Transfer. And, and, you are anti-semitic and hate Israel!!) were pretty hardcore.

Maybe you should offer to sell your tracking software to the WaPo for a few thousand bucks? It certainly has made this board more civilized!

13 Political Atheist  Sun, Apr 4, 2010 6:57:09pm

This was well before my time here. Still, I find it really telling how willing the public fringe is to go so angry, so vile, and insulting. We see this at blogs, & ordinary news sites with a comment feature etc. Either real time moderation will get real people assigned with the costs that entails, or many sites should simply not allow comments. Sites as obvious as CNN down to your friendly area political blogger.
Frankly I almost never read the comments anywhere else. Certainly no where they are un moderated. I'm just not willing to sort out the garbage on my own.

That may sometimes be the truth. But I think that if it happens, its intended to make the nuts feel more comfortable on a comment log. All you really have to do is make the nuts feel at home and they'll let their freak flags fly.

The only way to prevent the crazies from taking over is to exercise strong moderation.

And if you do that, you'd better be prepared to be vilified and smeared all over the Internet, because the crazies are obsessively vindictive.

Al has gone mad or has Alzheimers. A once proud organization shot to shit. Snyder thinks throwing money at his problem will fix it. A football team is more of a machine that has to work together than a baseball team. ie...da damn Yankees. Baseball you can spend an exhorbitant amount and get a team that can win. To me football has to have more chemistry than a baseball team.

79 What, me worry?  Sun, Apr 4, 2010 7:17:03pm

If these news sites are afraid they're loosing business to bloggers and decide they're going to charge for their articles, they better clean up their comments. I rarely go to Yahoo because of it and I would certainly never pay for access. Not to any of them.

What they need to do is just move all commenting to a Blog Forum. If you want to discuss the article, you click and you're taken off the page onto another server and you can bitch all you want somewhere else.

re: #57 charlz

Once again Snyder goes with almost-over-the-hill talent rather than buildinga team from the ground up through patience and hard work. We'll see what Shanahan can do, but this doesn't bode well.

Shanahan would rather groom a younger QB I'm sure...so there must be something there, but McNabb is far less mobile than before that knee injury and his downfield accuracy is weaker....but the last two seasons he had speedball receivers to run to the ball....but that didn't help him against Dallas this year....Westbrook was cut as well...the Eagles have some roster problems

Signing bonuses get broken down as in bonus/years signed for. % years/10 million= 2million a year against the cap. But I think the cap is gone.

they are paid out anyway they agree, usually the most early then the rest...I'm just saying that's guaranteed money regardless...a monster bonus against the cap is job security, that's why good veteran players are getting shorter contracts when the move around....the cap limits a team to paying their superstars at the glamor positions and the rest take shorter contracts, where as you say, the bonus is the money, since nothing is guaranteed for those mid level guys

In a few months, The Post will implement a system that should help. It's still being developed, but Straus said the broad outlines envision commenters being assigned to different "tiers" based on their past behavior and other factors.

They have interesting ideas for moderation, but I don't think it will reduce the amount of work it will take to do an effective job.

the injury factor again...it's becoming increasingly dangerous and for one thing the NFL treats it's retired, broken down players like shit...players want more money for the higher risk, and this rookie thing is totally out of control...and the NFL has been raking it in, the continuous rise of the cap shows that, but individual teams are hurting, like Buffalo

During WW2, for a time the Soviets took the more direct approach and massacred and raped their way across E. Prussia, with two results: the Germans ethnic cleansed themselves, needing no further inducement than that to leave, and then the Wehrmacht found one last reason to fight, when there was no other reason: they were the rearguard for the evacuation of millions of civilians.

This became so big a problem that Stalin ordered a halt to the propaganda incitement to rape and massacre, and ordered that normal rules of conduct be reinstated.

After Germany surrendered, ethnic Germans were transferred out of the Sudetenland, Silesia, and East Prussia. The conquered land was to go to the conquerors, and the losers would be gifted their lives but stripped of their homes.

Nobody with access to polite company has ever criticized that. You start a war and fight nasty and lose, that's what you get and be glad it wasn't worse.

All legitimized by the original version of the UN: the wartime alliance of anti-fascist powers went by the name of the United Nations.

Speaking of restive commenters, Greenpeace's blogger is causing some waves today. Seems the granola gobbler, in his righteous rage at society's tardiness to re-arrange itself to his liking, is trying to come on all menacing-like:

The proper channels have failed. It's time for mass civil disobedience to cut off the financial oxygen from denial and skepticism.

If you're one of those who believe that this is not just necessary but also possible, speak to us. Let's talk about what that mass civil disobedience is going to look like.

If you're one of those who have spent their lives undermining progressive climate legislation, bankrolling junk science, fueling spurious debates around false solutions, and cattle-prodding democratically-elected governments into submission, then hear this:

We know who you are. We know where you live. We know where you work.

And we be many, but you be few.

Such a firecracker in the chicken coop! The commenters are aghast, and the higher-ups felt compelled to insert their own preambles and sidebars in his blogpost, assuring readers that he doesn't mean it.

No joke. The thread was the amazing randi debunking dowsing.

I was probably on that thread, didn't remember the meltdown. But then again, I keep saying it over and over, I don't pay much attention to the meltdowns, the stalkers or the trolls, at least I don't remember them for more than a moment.

You probably had no idea, but I don't pay any attention to the stalker blogs. Except for one stalker blog that so happened to post some material of mine with out my permission, I have never read one of those blogs or had any interaction with any of those blogs.

So, no, I had no idea where you were going with your comments.

Sorry for the confusion on my part.

How much did they pay you to say that?

IIRC, the refs do go to school and are critiqued, but they aren't paid for a full time job and they should be. They can go to mini camp and spring training too and practice on getting it right!

yeah, I know, I didn't mean that they didn't, and don't know why I put it like that....but the job is so demanding and pressure packed, that it needs to be a full time gig....studying tapes etc just like player...staying in condition...the league can get by without some program like that, but I'm a ref guy too....they do a fantastic job overall, but they are clearly are not on the same page....in the 3rd quarter of the Cowboy/Vikings playoff game there were like three holding calls in a row that should not have been called....that's 30yards and a couple of first downs...the Vikings went on to score....the replays were clear proof that the calls were bad each time

I'm kind of that way with music, partially thanks to LGF. The guys in my audio department have an encyclopedic knowledge of, well, music in general, and I'm forever listening to something cool here, and then the next day telling them, "Hey, you should check out this obscure band called Neutral Milk Hotel! They rule!" while they roll their eyes at me.

I did get to introduce them to Electric Six, though.

re: #192 lostlakehiker

And anyone who thinks that the Israelis should emulate the Russians by kicking the Muslims out of the West Bank to reclaim Judea and Samaria are nutbags. It's not about religion, anyway, it's about fresh water. As we say in Texas, whiskey's for drinkin', water's for fightin'.

This doesn't have to do with Buddhism. The hardest aspect of my husband's Japanese culture is the expectations put on the oldest son. They inherit everything and are to be honored in the family. What actually happens, in our case anyway, is a bunch of resentment and misunderstanding all around.

Yeah, American Buddhism-Lite is annoying--just another avenue for overgrown adolescents to meditate on their own inner wonderfulness. Apologies to any serious devotees of The Paths who may be present.

I once read a very interesting article by an American Buddhist who wrote that he thinks that one of the factors involved is that Asians are by and large raised in cultures that favor the community over the individual, and therefore, the inward and solitary focus of Buddhism provides a counterbalance. Americans/Westerners, he said, are taught to see ourselves as individuals, and value that highly, from early on, so the danger of Buddhism to us is that we easily become navel-gazing assholes.

Now, since he himself was a practicing Buddhist, I assume he believed there was some way around this, but I thought it was an interesting insight.

If my rephrasing of what he said reveals my total ignorance of Buddhism, sorry. I try.

And don't get me started on the Campus Crusaders...

FLOC! (Follow the Lord On Campus. I give them credit for a great acronym.)

I had a girl in one of my college classes who, when we were asked about our religious backgrounds, explained that she was raised Buddhist, 'but my grandma says I have little Taoist in me'.

I don't think grandma thought that was altogether a good thing.

I've heard the same thing, from a Chinese Buddhist who came here as a child, and so got to see both sides at once, as it were. She said that Americans really need to learn a sense of the whole before they can separate out from it, and that, perversely, many Americans attempting to become Buddhist see the 'centering' of themselves as stripping away of their identities to become like the other Buddhists, rather than an attempt to find the real self inside.

She as also six feet tall, from Texas, has a huge, genuine drawl, and renamed herself "Texas" on her eighteenth birthday.

Every well in our neighborhood in North Jersey (back in the 60's) was found by a dowser, including ours. It was almost like a tradition to use this dowser that had been around forever.

Anyone would find water anywhere in our area if they drilled 350-400 feet. We lived 300 feet above the largest lake in NJ.

Heh. Is James Randi a magician?

James Randi basically started out in the business as an escape artist back in the NYC area in the 50's. He was really good, billed himself as a successor to Houdini, and performance wise, he probably was. He aslo did magic, but it was not his primary performance medium.

He was always into the skeptic stuff personally, and when he got older, he managed to turn the skeptic stuff into a lucrative career.

re: #235 SanFranciscoZionist

Someone who gets very, very upset with the people saying that dowsing isn't scientifically verified, and might, therefore, be silly.

While not scientifically verified, I must admit, I have a pair of steel wires I carry in the car for dowsing shallow cast iron lines when I go to Emergency Response sites. We often have to do excavations to access utilities or install vapor or phase-separated product recovery trenches, and we don't have time to get One Call out to identify utilities in the excavation areas. I think dowsing for water and oil is bullshit, but it often works a treat with shallow iron lines. I have personally identified three black iron pipes that are laterals off of gas mains one to two feet below asphalt/soil. The first time, the gas guy pulled out his maps and said the excavation area was clear. I asked him to stick around. Ten minutes later, the backhoe popped a one-inch line to an abandoned building slab across the street. He looked at me funny, because I had marked it in chalk on the asphalt. "How did you know that was there?"

"Magic." I said.

I have no idea why it works, although I posit that bare steel lines of any type are oxidizing and losing electrons, and thus create an electrical field. All I do know is that when you walk across one, the wires cross. Doesn't work with galvanized pipe. Hit a 2" gas main once (also off the charts) and had to shut down everything that had a motor and evacuate a two block radius. Hassle.

parity is the best thing that ever happened to the NFL...I remember the old ways, when Dallas was a power house every year, but in the long run it's better for the league and the fans nationwide...look what the Saints just did, or the lowly Cardinals last year...I'm older I guess but I've learned to appreciate the competition...anything can happen in the NFL

Unbeatable Dallas was a power every year in the Seventies, except in the post-season. They were almost as bad in the post-season as Dan "Mr. Regular Season" Marino and the Dolphins in the Eighties and Nineties.

The success of the Saints and Cardinals gives hope to everyone. Well, except maybe the Lions and Browns. Some things never change, like the stinkage of those two teams, the arrogance of the Patriots and Cowboys and their fans, the self-importance of the Giants and Jets, and Dan Snyder and Al Davis leading the league in stupidity. And the Steelers winning Super Bowls.

BTW. I rooted for the colts in this year's Super Bowl, but was very happy for the Saints and their eternally suffering fans when they won.

re: #274 SanFranciscoZionist

Calling half-assed newbie Buddhists half-assed newbie Buddhists does not show any disrespect for Buddhism, I don't think.

Especially given that anyone can read a book, decide they're a Buddhist, and start being annoying in chat rooms.

ROFLMAO!

That takes me back to college in the Seventies (bars, coffeehouses, and the school cafeteria instead of chat rooms). I went to a Catholic college (long story there) where almost no one except some of us non-Catholics had any clue about anything other than drinking, treating women like property, and following the pre-Vatican II playbook in their attitudes. Every time someone read the latest fad book, it was time for endless bullbleep. Instant experts. I probably made a few enemies with my usual responses such as, "Let me guess. You just finished the first book you've read on this."

re: #275 Dark_Falcon

Ugh. After sitting through The Postman, I vowed to never watch another "long Kevin Kostner movie" again. I don't mind movies with him in the cast like Open Range, but if he's the only major star I steer clear.

You thought "The Postman" was bad? Try "Waterworld" some time.

407 BethesdaDog  Tue, Apr 6, 2010 7:49:26am

I think the Post is somewhat disingenuous about the whole thing. They claim they don't have the resources to moderate all the comments.

Just look at the tidal wave of anti-semitic and hateful comments following a Krauthammer column on Israel. I've spent quite some time, going through, and marking the inappropriate ones. I don't know if anything ever happens. I don't think they really care or recognize anti-semitiism when it rears its ugly head.

I have to say, I don't understand the comments on this website, either. I haven't been on for a day or two, just found this article, and attempted to wade through approximately 500 comments to see if anybody posted something similar to what I was just going to post. I went through comment after comment that was totally irrelevant to the topic at hand, and got tired of it, and just went down to the bottom to post this. Of course, none of the comments were inappropriate, just irrelevant.

People are free to post what they want, and apparently other people hear want to read when the posts go off topic, it makes it awfully annoying for those interested in the main topic. I guess I'll get flamed for making this very simple and reasonable comment.
