How many times has Spiderman’s secret identity been compromised? About a hundred?

Well, maybe in that comic book. I think about a million people in the New York city know his secret identity, they are just all really good people who would never dream of violating his confidence.

/sure, it could happen. (?)

Seduction of the Innocent. The stink raised by this book, hatin’ on the comics of the 1950s, gave rise to the organization in that seal on the cover up there, The Comics Code Authority.

Here’s something similar. I like the third law:

Any body in motion will tend to remain in motion until solid matter
intervenes suddenly.

Whether shot from a cannon or in hot pursuit on foot, cartoon characters
are so absolute in their momentum that only a telephone pole or an outsize
boulder retards their forward motion absolutely. Sir Isaac Newton called
this sudden termination of motion the stooge’s surcease.

Charles is sort of on vacation right now, he and his brother are going thru a crate of their old comic books that their mother saved for all these years and are going to send some of them off for professional grading and pricing.

He has been posting very few topics since this is kinda his time off, but he has helped to keep us entertained by posting shots of the covers of some of the better and rarer books they have found in the collection.

Hope that answers you satisfactorily.

88 The Sanity Inspector  Sun, Apr 4, 2010 9:47:47pm

And good night. Play nice:

Throughout most of recorded history, theologians and philosophers have extolled propriety and correct social behavior as virtues akin to morality. It is chiefly in this century that they have come to regard etiquette as a dispensable frill, at best; at worse, they have denounced it as a sin. Hypocrisy is the damning label now attached to any polite inhibition that disguises a sincerely held opinion or restrains a righteous impulse for action.

But I would contend that obeisance to etiquette, far from being a weak and optional virtue, much less a sin, is the oldest social virtue, and an indispensable partner of morality. Rather than being the crowning touch of good behavior in the upper reaches of a stratified society, etiquette is civilization’s first necessity.

—The World’s Oldest Virtue by Judith Martin, First Things, May 1993

The wingnut blogs are shrieking again, about my post on Teabonics.

They think I posted an “obviously photoshopped picture.” But they couldn’t seem to figure out how to click the link I posted and see the dozens of other photos in the set.

The idiocy just keeps on going.

Oh look. He has something like a poem:

I’m an American dammit!
I don’t want to be a European.
I don’t want to be a ward of the state.
I don’t want to drive one of them silly looking dinky little cars that they drive in France.

How can someone be smart at one thing and be so dumb at so many other things? The power of obsession is an amazing thing to watch.

In Cog’s case, it was was contrarianism taken to the extreme. When Cog was wrong and got called on it. he reacted with denial and baiting. He even did that to Charles. Charles got tired of being baited and lied to, so he gave Cog the gate.

There’s been an endless supply of material for comedians since last year. That part about wanting to be an American and not a European is hilarious considering the origins of this nation. He probably thinks Americans are something like the native people. No doubt he’s a Nativist. He’d probably check “American” for race in the CENSUS if he could.

That reminds me of a post on my FB page about the Texas School Board nonsense. I posted a (I obviously thought obvious) snarky comment about the Texas School Board deciding that the earth being the center of the universe was a disputed “theory” so the “controversy” should be taught. Eventually I had to post on my own FB page that I was using sarcasm. To say I am saddened by that is an understatement. Ignorance is truly stifling.

Well, they’re still rolling out there in the desert.

Lots of aftershocks, as can be seen on the list, or more graphically on this view of the area.

It appears as if one person is known dead from the quake in Mexico.

The large quake and most of the big aftershocks are in the mountain range, or right next to it, labeled “Cucapa” in the middle of this Google Maps view.

It would be interesting to see the elevation changes in those mountainous areas. They probably fell a bit today. The trench that is opening up along the San Andreas is causing the land to fall (and indeed the bottom of the Salton Sea is essentially at the same elevation below sea level as the lowest part of Death Valley), usually slowly, but sometimes with drama. As Baja is drifting away from Mexico/Arizona, the material in between the spine of Baja and the main part of NA is falling.

I share most of that. Formula 1 is definitely more interesting than NASCAR. They have right turns on their tracks.

I eventually lost interest in F1. I can see your point about spectator access and I’m sure there’s a big difference between watching it on TV and being there live. I’m sure the sound is a big factor live not unlike an airshow.

There is zero doubt about it - California will suffer more major (bigger than today’s) earthquakes. And probably will for millions of years to come as the Pacific plate continues to grind NW against NA. Answering the question When? is the challenge. As far as I know, no reputable geologists will predict a firm date, though there has been some attempt to bin the probabilities (e.g., over the next 100 years.)

U.S. Admits Role in February Killing of Afghan Women

KABUL, Afghanistan — After initially denying involvement or any cover-up in the deaths of three Afghan women during a badly bungled American Special Operations assault in February, the American-led military command in Kabul admitted late on Sunday that its forces had, in fact, killed the women during the nighttime raid.

The admission immediately raised questions about what really happened during the Feb. 12 operation — and what falsehoods followed — including a new report that Special Operations forces dug bullets out of the bodies of the women to hide the true nature of their deaths.

I believe the only times they can predict any possible recurrence would be after today’s activities. That itself would open a wide ranging window and nothing precise.

The best offense with earthquake hazards is seismic zone design standards which of course you’re familiar with. New construction already accounts for this. The problem lies with old structures and financing retro-fitting of these old buildings. This also includes transportation structures.

Yes, modern building standards help, but even then one never knows exactly how the local surface will react.

E.g., from today:

At a Sheraton hotel in downtown San Diego, the floor cracked opened and prevented the front doors from shutting. Officials ordered all guests and staff from the building, pending an inspection from structural engineers.

Concrete bends and flexes… to a point, then it cracks open.

In the rural part of Mexico at the epicenter I wonder how many homes are just made out of brick and mortar - not the A-frame wood standard used here?

Scary.

Don’t know that the typical design standard was or is in Mexico. I imagine it’s close to what you describe. Most modern single family homes in western USA are western platform framed.

Brick and mortar for sure…… re-bar optional……. that’s rural and city. Squatters and the dirt poor use whatever they can find.
