What you may not be aware of is that deep down in the weeds in physics there is an ongoing debate, hidden in the closet usually so no outsider will see it, about whether the future is determined or not. It’s as sticky as the theological debate. The problem arose because once “time” was assigned as a “dimension” it became obvious that “future” and “past” are arbitrary points.

And most of what we call “free will” is just how we retroactively rationalize and justify the reflex reactions we are all but predertermined to make in a certain situation.
But would not be willing to surrender even my illusion of it, and therefore feel compelled to defend it for myself and for others to have the opportunity to at least think they were doing what they wanted to and not what they were compelled by their brain make-up to do.

I understand why she resigns but I’m sad it had to happen. She was one of the very few who didn’t ask softball questions to presidents. This time she went too far with her statement abou Israel being an occupation nation.
I do understand why she did it. These days journalistic ethics, integrity and values have taken a nosedive. Truths and lies are fighting for the most attention. And this time she got carried away and derailed big time.
She should have known better anyway. Sad…

Hey Jimmah. Sitting here looking through some alternative paper for Charleston, South Carolina. Don’t even remember how I got there. Nothing new, neck is still screwed up. We had an electrical sub-station explode and the power was out for about 6 hours and was surprised they were able to bring the power back up. You should have seen the smoke cloud. It was black and about 300 feet high and and 100 feet wide. My estimation. How are you?

On the BBC link though. It was with regards to the Cumbria killing in which 12 were killed. Apparently he drew his gun on two unarmed bobbies and although they pursued him they couldn’t do anything since they were unarmed.
Just a thought. Not really sitting here thinking about all that.

UN refugee agency says being expelled from Libya
(AP) – 40 minutes ago
GENEVA — The U.N. refugee agency says it is being expelled from Libya without explanation. The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees says it received a note from Libyan authorities ordering it to close its office.
UNHCR spokeswoman Melissa Fleming says the agency, which has worked in Libya since 1991, is still trying to negotiate with Libya to try to stay there. She said Tuesday that Libyan authorities have given no reason for the expulsion. Libyan authorities in Geneva would not comment on the situation.
Libya does not have a national asylum system. UNHCR screens asylum seekers in Libya and determines if they qualify for refugee status. It has 26 staff in Libya, mostly local employees.
No UN refugee agency and no national asylum system (obviously). More fun for the Eritreans coming up. As with any other refugees in another nomadic banana country.

Yeah, you were right. I thought we also called out the heavies, but it turns out that it was more of a carrier-based air strike. In any event, I would’ve thought he’d be less apt to being stupid after we dropped a few bombs on his head, but I suppose future generations of U.S. Presidents have been more afraid of the international fallout that resulted from that whole incident.

C) Local mill. A sharpened wooden stick driven through the heart of a zombie is a well established kill method of zombies and vampires. Although one could add “D” to pick up massive supplies of garlic.
E) Bunker with a diesel powered generator to play jazz music while the zombie are at your door like on “The Last Man on Earth”. This also allows quick access to wooden stakes, garlic, and mirrors which can be stored in the bunker.
E) Flaming zombies will also attract other zombies in the dark of night.

Personally, it really depends on the type of zombie. We can conclude that if they are fast zombies, you are f*d sooner or later. A new Dawn of the Dead/ 28 days Later/ I Am Legend scenario is game over - unless you have an aircraft carrier with its flight deck converted to a green house
Slow zombies are only an issue in packs, or if you somehow trip in the woods and it takes you minutes to get up.

The Last Man on Earth , the very first film adaptation of “I Am Legend” by Richard Matheson. Damn good author, I’ve read a couple of his books already.
Except, of course, that those things you set out to kill during the day could, in fact, be infected who’ve started taking the cure but aren’t fully cured. In which case, you’re just as much a monster to them as the infected are to you.

I recently started watching the first season of Party Down. Hilarious show, and you can stream the first season on Netflix.
One episode involved the casting of a movie about Edgar Allen Poe. The movie is based on a comic book, where Poe is a vampire killer. I think that would be a great movie.

I haven’t seen it, but I see the commercials a lot. With 24 over, and all of the Thursday night sitcoms I watch on a break, I’m not watching much tv. The only shows I regularly watch now are Breaking Bad and Justified. The Justified season finale is tonight, BB’s is next Sunday.

Great Escape veteran dies at 97
His family said Jack Harrison died Friday at age 97 at Erskine veterans’ home in Bishopton, Scotland.
Harrison was a Royal Air Force pilot who was shot down and captured on his first mission in 1942.
He was part of the plot to escape from Stalag Luft III in 1944, retold in the film “The Great Escape.” However, he was not among the 76 who broke out. Harrison was 98th on the list to go, but guards detected the 77th escape.
Of the 76 who escaped, only three got to safety. Fifty were executed on Adolf Hitler’s orders, and 23 others were returned to custody.

I think that’s what unnerved me while watching 28 Days Later more than anything else, the beginning where Jim’s walking around in this seemingly empty London, with no signs of life. Apparently when they showed it to test audiences, there was no music whatsoever during the entirety of that scene, so that when there came the sudden loud sound, folks practically had heart attacks.

Here? The Aruban officials botched the case badly, but van der Sloot is now being charged in Alabama for trying to extort $250k from Holloway’s mother for information on the whereabouts of Natalee’s remains. That’s in addition to the Peruvian murder charges to which he confessed.
And Flores’ father thinks that Sloot’s laptop has incriminating evidence on it about other potential victims (which I think it speculation on his part, but who knows). What I do know is the guy is a creep and his confession means he will spend a considerable amount of time in prison.

My home state of Michigan provides something of an acid test for the popularity of the policies of the Obama Democrats.
But Michigan voters have been moving right, not left. A recent poll taken for the Detroit Free Press poll showed that only 43% of Michiganians support the Obama Democrats’ health care bill and 53% are opposed. Most interestingly, 69% of those under 30 are opposed; they apparently have figured out that the bill would force them to pay more to subsidize insurance for their elders.

There is no comparison between Exodus and the publicity stunt orchestrated by Turkey, The International Solidarity Movement, IHH, and various other cognitively discontent Western front groups. The Mavi Marmara was a shipload of junk posing as “humanitarian aid” and noticeable compliment of violent militants hell bent on breaking Israels legal blockade of the terrorist state of Gaza.
The Exodus was a ship of refugees escaping the continuing hatred inherent in Europe only to be turned away by the British and face further hardship in prison camps. They did not get weekly truckloads of humanitarian aid while lobbing missiles and rockets into British territory. They did not get billions of dollars in aid and get to drive in BMW M5s while speaking to the British press and garnering alliances with millionaire pop stars.

That part in bold is considered a badge of honor and goes to the pangs of “Arab” nationalism we see brandished by regimes in the Middle East from time to time. Of course, support for the Palestinians drops off once those regimes are themselves threatened by Palestinians (see Jordan, Black September; Lebanon, Lebanese civil war; etc.) or those regimes bite off more than they can chew and find their capital cities buzzed by Israeli fighters.
I don’t think the Israelis want a regional war and neither do the other countries - they’re largely content to use proxy groups to fight a low-level campaign of attrition.

Perhaps — but I tend to think it’s as simple as the fact that, despite what we now know with certainty about Thomas’ attitudes, she was viewed as a member of the press corps who deserved a certain degree of respect as a journalist. (Again, notwithstanding the present state of affairs.) Pukecannon, on the other hand, never had a rep as a journalist. I think that people in general, whether they like to realize it or not, expect journos to have a higher standard than pundits, and so the backlash against the stupid behavior of the Thomases and Rathers tends to be more pronounced.

I would argue that some do believe as you say, that Israel is only hated due to its actions, and would be horrified. But I think too many would simply sit back, as they have been for decades, and watch quietly (if not with expressed glee) as Israel was wiped off the map in an orgy of violence and bloodshed. I know it’s a rather dark and pessimistic view to take, but I believe too many are so consumed by their own hatred that they’d dream up some way to “justify” the millions of deaths.

Holocaust revisionism comes in many flavors - all of them distasteful. Whether it’s a full frontal assault in claiming that it didn’t happen, or that the resulting genocide and rampant anti Semitism didn’t obviate the need for a Jewish State of Israel, the results are the same. Such revisionism is meant to undermine Israel’s existence by coopting the terminology of the Holocaust - claiming that Jews are engaging in the genocide of Gazans (or Palestinians generally), that they’re in concentration camps, the references to the SS Exodus, etc.
And when such claims come from the likes of Turkey, such revisionism is all the more hypocritical.

Meh. I’m Jewish, and I just honestly haven’t met that large a number of people who actually hate real, individual Jews. I’ve had a far greater number of people who are darkly suspicious of Jews en masse, who believe in conspiracy nonsense about us, but don’t actually attach that to individual Jewish people.
It’s kind of like how a lot of people in the Southwest are perfectly capable of working well with Hispanics, being good neighbors with them, but still favor blatantly racist policies against them; it’s kind of the ‘You’re all right so long as you’re in your place’ deal. Jews, in founding Israel, have risen above their station, in the hypocritical eyes of many.
Or it’s similar to people— especially those in the Democrats— who have been just fine with having the support of blacks, but when it came time to vote for a black man for president had little meltdowns.

Perhaps — but I tend to think it’s as simple as the fact that, despite what we now know with certainty about Thomas’ attitudes, she was viewed as a member of the press corps who deserved a certain degree of respect as a journalist. (Again, notwithstanding the present state of affairs.) Pukecannon, on the other hand, never had a rep as a journalist. I think that people in general, whether they like to realize it or not, expect journos to have a higher standard than pundits, and so the backlash against the stupid behavior of the Thomases and Rathers tends to be more pronounced.
That’s my take on it, anyway.
Actually, Buchanan did have a good rep at one time as a hard-ass no-bullshit political commentator. Then, his huge ego got the better of him and around the time his grandiose political ambitions went south, he went nazi.

I posted this late down thread and it relates to your post. Too many blogs only discuss the truth that suits their political bias, and reject truths to the right or left of them. My post relates to the blog wars over petty issues, in this case, not wanting to credit LGF for the photo cropping story, my old post:

I didn’t like it when Lizard’s would automatically reject any links to facts from sites to the left of them here in the past, nor do I like when blogs reject LGF’s facts because of a petty grudge or our perceived move to the left.
As to AP, and Hot Air, I have a confession to make, I sometimes read his blog and see some wheat amid the chaff.
Hot Air and AP often post facts that are not at all welcome on his site, and AP gets a lot of flack for so doing. He’s been accused of being “LGF light” for his anti-Palin posts for example.
In a perfect world, sites like Hot Air and LGF would respect each other while disagreeing on many issues, and slamming each other over past bad blood. I think AP’s reluctance to credit LGF on this story was a attempt to get out a important story without seeing it rejected out of hand because of it’s source.
I often did the same in the early days of my membership here. If I found a story on Huffington, or Media Matters for example, I’d try to find a indirect link. It was silly when I had to do that, and just as silly that AP has to do the same. The real truth does not just reside on the left, right or middle, it can be found everywhere and more sites like LGF need to accept that.”
I too am a social liberal, and maybe fiscally moderate and although I had a rough patch early on, I have seen LGF mature to the point that all opinions are welcome, and that is very rare. BTW, welcome new Lizard.

So, the “Ground Zero mosque” protests continue.

“Get out,” others shouted.
In fact, the two men – Joseph Nassralla and Karam El Masry — were not Muslims at all. They turned out to be Egyptian Coptic Christians who work for a California-based Christian satellite TV station called “The Way.” Both said they had come to protest the mosque.
“I’m a Christian,” Nassralla shouted to the crowd, his eyes bulging and beads of sweat rolling down his face.
But it was no use. The protesters had become so angry at what they thought were Muslims that New York City police officers had to rush in and pull Nassralla and El Masry to safety.
“I flew nine hours in an airplane to come here,” a frustrated Nassralla said afterward.

Not to mention that the best you could do in those days was delete posts, but never really get rid of the troll. If you IP-banned, you ran the risk of cutting off people who had no dog in the fight, plus the troll would just change computers and be right back at it.

Their post-checking is automated, using bots, and it is deeply flawed. Completely innocuous posts gets censored regularly, and ridiculously inflammatory stuff gets posted. They simply have WAY too much traffic to properly censor the comments. There are tricks to getting around the automated censors, such as opening and closing a bold tag in the middle of a word which you know the censor will flag.
It is completely fair and valid to criticize huffpo for the stories they choose to run, but you are off your rocker if you really believe that huffpo is deliberately allowing anti-Simitic rants in their comment section. They have thousands of times more traffic than LGF, probably tens of thousands. And open registration. Imagine trying to police that volume of text continuously. It’s not possible.

If one or two people make an ugly comment and the community objects then that’s ok. If the ugly comments are frequent and tolerated then it becomes a problem.

We’re getting a new pizza joint opening up soon. Franchise owned and run by Bangladeshi Muslims. I asked him where I could get a nice crescent-and-star to go with it, and he’s going to find me one.

Last year an online friend from Israel was passing through NYC for a couple of days. I and another friend who’s local decided that the three of us had to get together, even if it was just for a few hours.
We got a couple of strange looks—me with my Muslim style headscarf, my Israeli friend with her Jewish one, and my other friend (who’s Christian) in typical native New Yorker street clothes. We had a blast. As we went in to get a cup of coffee, I told them that I sort of felt like we were fodder some some really corny joke: “A Jew, a Muslim and a Christian walk into a coffee shop…”

I let mine out to roam the floor of the apartment building. They tend to run a quick patrol loop to sniff doors and see if anything has been moved. And they scamper from home if any of the neighbors appear! (Generally to the neighbor’s amusement.)

Here in the neighborhood, people walk around in all kinds of garb. Djellabas and skullcaps. Long linen shirts. Saris. Turbans. I have yet to witness anyone get hated on for the clothes they wear or the language they speak. This would be the perfect neighborhood but for the unbearable Baltimore summers.
We’re getting a new pizza joint opening up soon. Franchise owned and run by Bangladeshi Muslims. So I was talking to one of them the other day and he noticed my gold cross and Star of David on my neck chain. I asked him where I could get a nice crescent-and-star to go with it, and he’s going to find me one.
I’m gonna be a walking, talking co-exist bumper sticker, hoping to blow minds on a daily basis.
I can send you a few “CTR” rings to add to the decor.

At least the hissing is fading now, its taken this long for Silver (our sketchy prima dona) to accept Peanut into the family. The Maine Coone Pepper is so easy going she disciplines Silver for the hissing, go figure!

We’ve been gifted with two of the oddest cat overlords. Both were rescue kitties that came home with us when they were very young. Since we’re in a very urban environment, it has always been our intention that they are INDOOR cat overlords. The odd thing is that they apparently agree. They’ll sit at the front door, happily gazing thru the screen — and whenever the door opens, they look up, apparently acknowledging that the door has moved, then resume what they were watching. They have shown zero interest in what the outside is like.
Except when a squirrel is nearby.
Otherwise, they are quite content indoors.
I’m grateful, and bemused.

Missy went outside for most of the day but always came in for the night. Our vet said we could have that gland removed so she couldn’t spray but we couldn’t afford the $250.00 they wanted to do the surgery. It costs even more to do these days.

She got the den as “her” territory initially while my remaining cat got the bedroom. She was kept in that room with food, water, and a litter box for a couple of days to get oriented. Then I started leaving the door from the den to the rest of the apartment open while I kept the other cat inside the closed off bedroom (its attached bathroom is the normal litter box location - so I just made sure some food and water were there for him.) She got to explore some without direct interaction with the other cat. From there I did a few days with “shifts” where one door or the other was open so that one cat was limited to one room while the other had the run of the rest of the apartment. Did that to allow each cat to get used to the smell of the other cat.
From there I started leaving both doors open when I was there to supervise and make sure they played “nice”, and the “shift” arrangement when I wasn’t. And eventually I started leaving the doors open all the time once it was clear that they weren’t going to fight.
Worst I saw was a little growling.

There are just too many things that put the cats in danger if they were outdoor cats. Eagles, possible wolf, Ravens, wild drivers, though the deer would not be apt to bother them.
Oh, didn’t know that. Yeah, I’d keep my girls in to if I lived out in that kind of area. I spent a week in Oro Vally, just outside of Tucson and they have all kinds of critters including Havalina and Bob Cat which can kill kitties for supper. My Pepper would go out of her furry little mind with all the wild life roaming around there! As it is when she sees a squirrel, possum or a rat she makes some of the weirdest noises and scratches furiously to get out after them.

If by ‘consequences’ you mean ‘social consequences’, then sure. We are protected from governmental restrictions on our speech (with a few notable, narrow exceptions) but not from societal reactions to our speech.
If societal reactions have the effect of deterring hateful conduct, then swell. That’s how an upstanding society ought to work.
Did i understand your question well enough to begin to answer it?
If the societal reactions are themselves coercive and socially undesireable, then we have a problem, do we not?

When my parents lived in Central Oregon there were not a lot of people in the development with outdoor cats. Main threat appeared to have been coyotes. One neighbor had cats that insisted on going outside — and they mainly hung out on the roof of the house.

We do not. We are protected from governmental interference with our speech. We are protected from bodily harm (i.e. you are not allowed to assault me because you dislike my speech).
The effect is a marketplace of ideas, where the best ideas survive and propagate while the worst are revealed as bankrupt. Granted, it’s a highly imperfect marketplace (I’m talking to you, Glen), but it’s ours.
No one is going to MAKE Helen stop saying bigoted things. If she chooses to allow the societal outrage to moderate her speech, it’s still her choice.

But that would depend on the specifics, don’t you think? For example, the ever-popular n-word is not illegal in any sense, yet those who use it are ostracized and/or criticized for doing so. The further away we get from the use of it as acceptable in society, the less frequently it occurs, and people have an understanding that it’s something one shouldn’t say, and most don’t. In this instance, I see nothing negative with the process.
Is this a too-mild example, or are you getting at something else? This is a big, sticky ball of hoo-boy, what a rats’ nest sort of discussion.

There was a huge controversy over whether the activists were armed. Cropping out a knife, in a picture showing a soldier who’s apparently been stabbed, seems like a very odd editorial decision.
It’ll be interesting to see how they run with this. If Fox can stick to the facts, they could hold Reuters’s feet to the fire. But that won’t happen if they try to tie it into some “ELEVENTY!!1” angle.

absolutely. at my company, we are harsh on bigots. we’ve fired people on their first ethnic slur when the circumstances warranted.

- Was the language known to be offensive by the speaker?
- Was the speaker made aware of the language issue?
- Is there a policy in place regarding use of unacceptable language?
- Does the person have public contact responsibilities?
- Was there a specific complaint?
- What was the extent of the language used?
- Was the person warned prior to termination and given an opportunity to correct it?
There are a number of factors at play. Are you referring to a specific case?

Last year an online friend from Israel was passing through NYC for a couple of days. I and another friend who’s local decided that the three of us had to get together, even if it was just for a few hours.

Yes. That’s the point.
In fact, the employer can be liable if they don’t take action, because they are responsible for providing a harassment-free workplace, even if the harassment is emanating from another employee. So at work, your speech is more heavily regulated than when you’re on your own time, and rightfully so IMHO.
However, the employer is also not allowed to discriminate on the basis of race, religion, gender, etc. So employees are protected from having their speech (or anything else) used as a pretext to fire all Christians, women, blacks, etc.
Let’s pause for a second. Why do you keep saying “protected speech”? Would you explain what you think “protected speech” means in greater detail?

The GOP has a lot to do with racism these days. The ‘right-wing’ in the US has a lot to do with racism in these days. So does the ‘left’, for that matter. But ‘liberal’ and ‘conservative’ have nothing to do with the purported ‘left’ and ‘right’. You can find the exact same positions held by people on the ‘left’ or the ‘right’, having arrived from a totally different first principle; or you can have the very same first principle and a difference in methedology lead to totally opposite conclusions.
The labels are mostly useless, but in the United States, with our two-party dominated system, the ‘left’ and the ‘right’ can basically mean the Democrats and their allies/hangers-on and the GOP and their allies/hangers-on. Aside from that, ‘liberal’ and ‘conservative’ themselves have very little meaning, but people like to call themselves that and the smarter ones usually mean something coherent by it— like a ‘social liberal’ is relatively easily understood to have at least some basic positions, as is a ‘social conservative’.

There is of course some portion of the population that self-describes as ‘liberal’ that is also anti-Semitic. There are also plenty of anti-Semites that would bristle at being termed ‘liberal’. There are people, such as myself, who do not agree with some actions taken by the state of Israel. This disagreement has nothing to do with the fact that Israel is a Jewish state. That’s just coincidental. However, it is inevitable that taking a position counter to a specific action or policy of Israel will get me labeled as an anti-Semite by somebody, as the two are often conflated. It is also true that one can take a position counter to Israeli policy without holding any sympathy for the enemies of Israel, i.e., actual anti-Semites. Some of those positions might be considered “typically liberal”. That doesn’t make them anti-Semetic, no matter how many times people cry wolf.
It gets kind of ridiculous after awhile. Hence, I bristle when those with whom I share certain political positions are painted with a broad brush without deference to the variety of positions one can hold, and without consideration for the fact that one can hold a position for various reasons.
An example: Noam Chomsky has written some absolutely brilliant screeds on the nature of propaganda. He has also said some crazy shit about Israel. I agree with Chomsky in his analysis of the P.R. industry in the U.S., and want to get as far the hell away from as I can when discussing his positions on Israel. If I agree with his analysis of the P.R. industry, does that make me an anti-Semite?
These issues are far, FAR too complicated to boil down to left/right.

You can keep having the discussion as much as you want. I can keep pointing out that the discussion has been had by brilliant people, written down, and is accessible to you as much as I want, too.
If that shuts you down, that is your choice, not mine. I’m not going to keep posting “Shut up here are more books”. You’re free to keep talking about it. I do think it’s stupid to do so, and I’m as free to say that as you are to talk about it.
The irony of this conversation is nearly overwhelming. You’re trying to say that I shouldn’t have said something.

Totally agreed, Daddy issues is those places would be “daddy sold me to make money”, and never a choice for these poor girls.

I’ll introduce myself, too! I’ve been reading LGF for years (I think I started around the time of the Rachel Corrie Pancake Breakfast) and finally decided to register.
Just like calochortus, I’m a Northern CA person. I am a liberal at heart, who finds little in common with either party.
I appreciate all the solid support Israel gets at Little Green Footballs. It is a breath of fresh air, compared to all the other stuff on the Internet. My mind boggles at Liberals who would rather support an oppressive theocracy over a dynamic democracy because they hate Jews more than they love freedom (or whatever! I have no good explanation…the most charitable is that they are stupid fools; useful idiots.)

THIS IS WHY WE NEED TO EDUCATE PEOPLE ABOUT THE REGION. There is this perception that there were no Jews in Israel up until, oh, 1945, and then the world carved them a little country to say sorry for the Shoah. THAT IS NOT HOW IT HAPPENED.
I’ve been wondering if Helen Thomas’ soundbite was actually a carefully planned suicide-bomb. She waited for the right opportunity to flip the switch, and seeing a rabbi doing interviews at a Jewish event, she found the perfect one!
Despite her resignation, she’s managed to plant two concepts in the minds of Useful Idiots everywhere: just search Twitter for Helen Thomas, you’ll see two “points” over and over again
#1. Look! Helen Thomas gets fired for what she said, but Rush Limbaugh still has a job (Thousands of people were re-tweeting things to this effect)
#2. Jews don’t belong in Israel
Helen Thomas, who I’m sure knows better, managed to convince millions of kids who get their news from Twitter that there’s some sort of powerful Jewish lobby that can get her fired (but not Rush!), and that everyone in Israel moved from Europe, and not the truth that at least half the Jews in Israel were kicked out of other neighboring mid-eastern countries, or are their descendants.
A lot of liberal kids I talk to think that it’s a “color” thing. The “white” Jews are oppressing the “brown” Arabs. Helen Thomas carefully tried to reinforce the notion that Jews are European, and therefore natural oppressors.
I think that her “suicide bomb” may have caused some collateral damage, despite her resignation. And I think it was well planned.
