What you may not be aware of is that deep down in the weeds in physics there is an ongoing debate, hidden in the closet usually so no outsider will see it, about whether the future is determined or not. It’s as sticky as the theological debate. The problem arose because once “time” was assigned as a “dimension” it became obvious that “future” and “past” are arbitrary points.

And most of what we call “free will” is just how we retroactively rationalize and justify the reflex reactions we are all but predertermined to make in a certain situation.
But would not be willing to surrender even my illusion of it, and therefore feel compelled to defend it for myself and for others to have the opportunity to at least think they were doing what they wanted to and not what they were compelled by their brain make-up to do.

What? No topic about the retirement of Helen Thomas?
I understand why she resigns but I’m sad it had to happen. She was one of the very few who didn’t ask softball questions to presidents. This time she went too far with her statement abou Israel being an occupation nation.
I do understand why she did it. These days journalistic ethics, integrity and values have taken a nosedive. Truths and lies are fighting for the most attention. And this time she got carried away and derailed big time.
She should have known better anyway. Sad…

Hey Jimmah. Sitting here looking through some alternative paper for Charleston, South Carolina. Don’t even remember how I got there. Nothing new, neck is still screwed up. We had an electrical sub-station explode and the power was out for about 6 hours and was surprised they were able to bring the power back up. You should have seen the smoke cloud. It was black and about 300 feet high and and 100 feet wide. My estimation. How are you?

On the BBC link though. It was with regards to the Cumbria killing in which 12 were killed. Apparently he drew his gun on two unarmed bobbies and although they pursued him they couldn’t do anything since they were unarmed.
Just a thought. Not really sitting here thinking about all that.

Oh OK. Now I’m more cornfused then normal. Not really.
I’m OK. The power finally did come back on but I had to drive to some yuckier part of town to get some snacks, cigs, and a little old bottle of booze. Got back and the power was out which meant schlepping up several floors to my dark apartment. Haven’t had an outage for this long in a while. Luckily I still have my blue Virgin Mary candle (in glass) to provide some light.

4 AM. It’s 2 AM here. They finally killed the blue laws here for liquor stores about a year ago. It’s handy since it keeps me from overstocking. I’m like a cat eating dry food with certain things if you know what I mean.
So I was in front of my building and did a little Glenn Beck impersonation (you know power outage, seedbank, end of the world) and my neighbor says, “who’s Glenn Beck?” I was glad he never heard of him.

Darfur death toll rises to two-year high in Sudan
About 600 people died in fighting in the Sudan region of Darfur in May, the highest monthly toll since peacekeepers were deployed in 2008, officials say…
The confidential document, seen by news agencies, said two rival Arab groups, the Rezeigat and Misseriya, had also clashed in Darfur since March…
According to the UN, an estimated 300,000 people have been killed in Darfur and more than 2.6 million displaced since ethnic rebels took up arms in 2003…
You think there would be international protests over all this but it still remain a hidden tragedy. Sudan says the figures are exaggerated while their president still has an ICC warrant for his arrest. That they sent Lumumba Di-Aping from Sudan to represent the G77 at COP15 (while playing China’s puppet) is farcical. At COP15 he said “we have been asked to sign a suicide pact” — he should know.

Didn’t you hear? The UN did exhaustive research and concluded that there’s no genocide occurring in Darfur. Now stop wasting time on frivolous things and get back to condemning Israel for the crime of existing.

UN refugee agency says being expelled from Libya
(AP) – 40 minutes ago
GENEVA — The U.N. refugee agency says it is being expelled from Libya without explanation. The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees says it received a note from Libyan authorities ordering it to close its office.
UNHCR spokeswoman Melissa Fleming says the agency, which has worked in Libya since 1991, is still trying to negotiate with Libya to try to stay there. She said Tuesday that Libyan authorities have given no reason for the expulsion. Libyan authorities in Geneva would not comment on the situation.
Libya does not have a national asylum system. UNHCR screens asylum seekers in Libya and determines if they qualify for refugee status. It has 26 staff in Libya, mostly local employees.
No UN refugee agency and no national asylum system (obviously). More fun for the Eritreans coming up. As with any other refugees in another nomadic banana country.

Yeah, you were right. I thought we also called out the heavies, but it turns out that it was more of a carrier-based air strike. In any event, I would’ve thought he’d be less apt to being stupid after we dropped a few bombs on his head, but I suppose future generations of U.S. Presidents have been more afraid of the international fallout that resulted from that whole incident.

b) hardware store
c) local mall
d) super market
e) your well fortified bunker basement which has many shotguns, boxes of shells, a chainsaw, weeks of rations and a hidden escape route
The best vehicle to drive in case of zombie apocalypse is:
a) small econo-car because of fuel efficiency
b) SUV - right, it can go off road!
c) hummer - after all the army drives those
d) tank
e) did I mention the bunker? Driving is crazy!
Why flamethrowers are not a good anti- zombie weapon:
a) you might hit humans
b) gas will be a valuable commodity in the post zombie world
c) bulky things if you have to run eh?
d) the light gives you away
e) Great now I have flaming zombies coming towards me and trying to tackle me!
If you answered e to all of these questions you are well prepared. If you answered anything else….

I believe the old stalker-blog fantasy about me is that I am a dominatrix and you and all other men on LGF are my slaves.
The sad witterings of those who have been intellectually castrated typically find a voice in claiming that the woman responsible is a ballbreaker and lesbian, and that any man responsible is ghey. Or dominated.

Zombie quiz part two:
Your beloved S.O. has been bitten. (S)he looks at you with glowing eyes and moans something grotesque. You:
a) Bewail your misery.
b) Believe that the power of your love will reverse the zombification
c) hug them
d) let them go “free.”
e) shoot them in the head and don’t get bit.

re: #83 LudwigVanQuixote
D) This was established in 1964 in “The Last Man on Earth” staring Vincent Price. While not a retro-virus it was caused by a zombie plague so this would be the closest answer.
C) Local mill. A sharpened wooden stick driven through the heart of a zombie is a well established kill method of zombies and vampires. Although one could add “D” to pick up massive supplies of garlic.
E) Bunker with a diesel powered generator to play jazz music while the zombie are at your door like on “The Last Man on Earth”. This also allows quick access to wooden stakes, garlic, and mirrors which can be stored in the bunker.
E) Flaming zombies will also attract other zombies in the dark of night.

First of all great zombie movie reference. Massive thumbs up.
Personally, it really depends on the type of zombie. We can conclude that if they are fast zombies, you are f*d sooner or later. A new Dawn of the Dead/ 28 days Later/ I Am Legend scenario is game over - unless you have an aircraft carrier with its flight deck converted to a green house
Slow zombies are only an issue in packs, or if you somehow trip in the woods and it takes you minutes to get up.

Great Escape veteran dies at 97
His family said Jack Harrison died Friday at age 97 at Erskine veterans’ home in Bishopton, Scotland.
Harrison was a Royal Air Force pilot who was shot down and captured on his first mission in 1942.
He was part of the plot to escape from Stalag Luft III in 1944, retold in the film “The Great Escape.” However, he was not among the 76 who broke out. Harrison was 98th on the list to go, but guards detected the 77th escape.
Of the 76 who escaped, only three got to safety. Fifty were executed on Adolf Hitler’s orders, and 23 others were returned to custody.

I think that’s what unnerved me while watching 28 Days Later more than anything else, the beginning where Jim’s walking around in this seemingly empty London, with no signs of life. HuffPo wasn’t alone in making that beyond-the-pale comparison. It came from the New York Times. Note the date. That was May 31. The day of the raid.
And it ignores the actual history and why the Exodus was making its way to then mandate Palestine - because no one in Europe wanted to take in the Holocaust refugees - survivors of the Nazi brutality and genocide.
Here? Israel was defending itself against the possibility of terrorists getting their hands on weapons and the need to enforce a blockade to thwart a terrorist group - one that is designated as such by the US government among others. It’s a group dedicated to Israel’s destruction. Yet, Israel is castigated for defending itself and using force, even as the other ships in the flotilla were blocked from entering Gaza peacefully and their cargoes offloaded and made available for transport to Gaza (where Hamas blocked any such entry).
No - by making that comparison, the HuffPo and NYT writers are undermining the nature of the Holocaust and the actions that led up to Israel’s creation. It’s a revisionist history that seeks to write out the very facts that led to Israel’s creation.

The Aruban officials botched the case badly, but van der Sloot is now being charged in Alabama for trying to extort $250k from Holloway’s mother for information on the whereabouts of Natalee’s remains. That’s in addition to the Peruvian murder charges to which he confessed.
And Flores’ father thinks that Sloot’s laptop has incriminating evidence on it about other potential victims (which I think it speculation on his part, but who knows). What I do know is the guy is a creep and his confession means he will spend a considerable amount of time in prison.

My home state of Michigan provides something of an acid test for the popularity of the policies of the Obama Democrats.
But Michigan voters have been moving right, not left. A recent poll taken for the Detroit Free Press poll showed that only 43% of Michiganians support the Obama Democrats’ health care bill and 53% are opposed. Most interestingly, 69% of those under 30 are opposed; they apparently have figured out that the bill would force them to pay more to subsidize insurance for their elders.

On the flip side of that, there are still plenty of rich people in this country & they haven’t hired everyone.
If unemployment is high, the wages of those they do hire can be beaten down.
Once their nest is feathered, they by and large don’t care.
The country would look different if they did.

I didn’t know that the NY Times had made the same irrational comparison. However, I am not surprised. I will assume the that the NY Times set the standard of which other Leftists must abide with.
There is no comparison between Exodus and the publicity stunt orchestrated by Turkey, The International Solidarity Movement, IHH, and various other cognitively discontent Western front groups. The Mavi Marmara was a shipload of junk posing as “humanitarian aid” and noticeable compliment of violent militants hell bent on breaking Israels legal blockade of the terrorist state of Gaza.
The Exodus was a ship of refugees escaping the continuing hatred inherent in Europe only to be turned away by the British and face further hardship in prison camps. They did not get weekly truckloads of humanitarian aid while lobbing missiles and rockets into British territory. They did not get billions of dollars in aid and get to drive in BMW M5s while speaking to the British press and garnering alliances with millionaire pop stars.

Hezbollah official opposes military naval escort to Gaza sails
Kamel al-Rifai, a Hezbollah faction member in the Lebanese parliament has rejected the idea of Iranian Revolutionary Guard ships escorting additional Gaza sails, following Iran’s Red Crescent announcement.
During an interview with the London-based al-Sharq al-Awsat daily, al-Rifai said, “the results of such an action would be negative since the purpose of sails is not military but to influence public opinion.”

WHO: Pharma Interests Didn’t Influence Flu Verdict
The head of the World Health Organization on Tuesday strongly rejected suggestions that her decisions about swine flu were influenced by advisers’ links to pharmaceutical companies.
“At no time, not for one second, did commercial interests enter my decision-making,” WHO Director-General Margaret Chan said.
She also dismissed claims the global health body had stirred unnecessary public fear over the pandemic.
Her statement came in response to an article in the British Medical Journal that questioned the way WHO managed conflicts of interest among its scientific advisers and the transparency of its advice to governments.

The 2010 elections have changed the direction of government only half way through the primary season, with voter anger and economic jitters causing lawmakers to balk at their most basic duties as well as key elements of President Barack Obama’s agenda.
After betting their political future on a government-mandated expansion of health care to include millions more Americans, Democrats appear to have little appetite for more legislative showdowns given voter rebellion against government spending amid trillion dollar-plus annual deficits.
The solution in some cases is to simply not vote. Immigration reform is too politically toxic. Key bills with massive price tags are getting shelved.

Russia, Turkey and Iran Meet, Posing Test for U.S. Diplomacy
Leaders of Russia, Turkey and Iran convened at a security summit meeting in Istanbul on Tuesday in a display of regional power that appeared to be calculated to test the United States just days before a scheduled American-backed debate in the United Nations Security Council on imposing tighter sanctions over Iran’s nuclear program…
“We’ve seen a lot of support from the international arena,” he said, according to the Turkey’s official Anatolian News Agency. “This is the voice of everyone’s heart.” Mr. Ahmadinejad also maintained a defiant posture toward the United States.
“If the U.S. and its allies think they could hold the stick of sanctions and then sit and negotiate with us, they are seriously mistaken,” he told a news conference, according to Iran’s state-run Press TV satellite broadcaster. European and American officials say the vote on sanctions could come as early as Wednesday.

Well, if the Iranians did pony up to the table, they’d get their military confrontation and a bit more, to boot. Another regional war would probably result out of the whole debacle. I’m surprised Iran is even bold enough to offer military escorts, since that basically exposes their complicity in supporting the people commonly referred to as Palestinians.

That part in bold is considered a badge of honor and goes to the pangs of “Arab” nationalism we see brandished by regimes in the Middle East from time to time. Of course, support for the Palestinians drops off once those regimes are themselves threatened by Palestinians (see Jordan, Black September; Lebanon, Lebanese civil war; etc.) or those regimes bite off more than they can chew and find their capital cities buzzed by Israeli fighters.
I don’t think the Israelis want a regional war and neither do the other countries - they’re largely content to use proxy groups to fight a low-level campaign of attrition.

Leftist Tali Fahima converts to Islam
Woman who had affair with al-Aqsa Brigades commander Zubeidi, served time for aiding terrorists converts to Islam at Umm al-Fahm mosque. ‘From now on she is a full-fledged Muslim,’ sheikh says
Israeli left-wing activist Tali Fahima, previously convicted of aiding Palestinian terrorists, told Ynet that she had converted to Islam on Monday at a mosque in Umm al-Fahm in the presence of three sheikhs.
Sheikh Yusuf Albaz confirmed that Fahima converted. Fahima herself refused to comment, saying that she doesn’t give interviews to the “Zionist media.”
Fahima plead guilty in December 2005 to maintaining contacts with a foreign agent with the intention of harming state security, and was sentenced to three years in prison. She was specifically convicted of aiding Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades terrorists, including the group’s leader in Jenin Zakariya Zubeidi, whom she had an affair with, and was released from prison in January 2007.
The Shin Bet security service claimed that Fahima, who resides in Wadi Ara, planned on becoming the first Jewish terrorist to act against her own people…

They want a confrontation, but sending ships full of Iranian fanatics is not a good way to force on and the Hezzies know it. It’s too likely that the Iranians would start shooting first, and the IDF would likely get that news out quickly, which even in Europe would not look good. Trolls like that don’t think for themselves, they rely upon whatever the talking point drummed up by the few that do dreams up. It’s like how every one swears that Israel’s action amounts to “piracy,” an “act of war,” or a “massacre.” That it doesn’t matter what the willing martyrs on the Mavi Marmara were doing, the fact that the Israelis were attempting to seize the ship amounts to “aggression” and the beating and stabbing of them amounts to “defense.”

I think that people in general, whether they like to realize it or not, expect journos to have a higher standard than pundits, and so the backlash against the stupid behavior of the Thomases and Rathers tends to be more pronounced.

I would argue that some do believe as you say, that Israel is only hated due to its actions, and would be horrified. But I think too many would simply sit back, as they have been for decades, and watch quietly (if not with expressed glee) as Israel was wiped off the map in an orgy of violence and bloodshed. I know it’s a rather dark and pessimistic view to take, but I believe too many are so consumed by their own hatred that they’d dream up some way to “justify” the millions of deaths.

Holocaust revisionism comes in many flavors - all of them distasteful. Whether it’s a full frontal assault in claiming that it didn’t happen, or that the resulting genocide and rampant anti Semitism didn’t obviate the need for a Jewish State of Israel, the results are the same. Such revisionism is meant to undermine Israel’s existence by coopting the terminology of the Holocaust - claiming that Jews are engaging in the genocide of Gazans (or Palestinians generally), that they’re in concentration camps, the references to the SS Exodus, etc.
And when such claims come from the likes of Turkey, such revisionism is all the more hypocritical.

Meh. I’m Jewish, and I just honestly haven’t met that large a number of people who actually hate real, individual Jews. I’ve had a far greater number of people who are darkly suspicious of Jews en masse, who believe in conspiracy nonsense about us, but don’t actually attach that to individual Jewish people.
It’s kind of like how a lot of people in the Southwest are perfectly capable of working well with Hispanics, being good neighbors with them, but still favor blatantly racist policies against them; it’s kind of the ‘You’re all right so long as you’re in your place’ deal. Jews, in founding Israel, have risen above their station, in the hypocritical eyes of many.
Or it’s similar to people— especially those in the Democrats— who have been just fine with having the support of blacks, but when it came time to vote for a black man for president had little meltdowns.

Perhaps — but I tend to think it’s as simple as the fact that, despite what we now know with certainty about Thomas’ attitudes, she was viewed as a member of the press corps who deserved a certain degree of respect as a journalist. (Again, notwithstanding the present state of affairs.) Pukecannon, on the other hand, never had a rep as a journalist. I think that people in general, whether they like to realize it or not, expect journos to have a higher standard than pundits, and so the backlash against the stupid behavior of the Thomases and Rathers tends to be more pronounced.
That’s my take on it, anyway.
Actually, Buchanan did have a good rep at one time as a hard-ass no-bullshit political commentator. Then, his huge ego got the better of him and around the time his grandiose political ambitions went south, he went nazi.

Hi all, I just want to introduce myself and this seems as good a thread as any. I live in the SF Bay Area, tend toward being socially liberal and fiscally conservative, and love a rational polite debate. Which would be why this is the only political site I’ve ever even felt tempted to join. I hope to be able to contribute a little value here.
Welcome!

Yes, but the gold standard is still Strunk, and: “William Strunk’s Elements of Style recommends adding the ‘s. (In fact, oddly enough, it’s Rule Number One in Strunk’s ‘Elementary Rules of Usage.’)”

I’d say ‘fiscally pragmatic’ rather than conservative.
But I want every government program tested to see if it actually works, and junked or redone if it doesn’t, and every new bill to have metrics for its success and built-in sunset provisions that kick in if it is judged not successful.
I think a lot of what’s wrongly called ‘fiscal conservatism’ is just being penny-wise but pound-foolish’, but in terms of philosophy, I’m pretty conservative. I want results.

True enough — but the key phrase there is “political commentator”. Thomas was right there, in the face of anybody who even casually watched network news or televised press conferences. And until we were drowned in the chaos of the multiple-network 24-hour news cycle, generally speaking, pundits were far less prominent.
Not making excuses for anyone. I think that the size of the fall is related to the expectations of the position. I think on an unacknowledged level, people hold (held?) journos to a higher standard than pundits. Hence the fall of Rather and Thomas, and the continued unchallenged spew from Patso.

Good morning, everyone…and a mea culpa for what I said last night. My intent wasn’t to defend Helen Thomas, as I agree her words were inexcusable. But in trying to take a more moderate tone(indeed, where it really wasn’t necessary), I managed to offend what appears to be the majority here, and for that I am truly sorry.
Peace.

re: #151 Gus 802
They actually had the nerve to link on the front page a comparison of the Mavi Marmara incident with the SS Exodus of 1947.
That is the sickest comparison I have ever heard. Sending Jews, fleeing for their lives, back to Germany…. with checking the cargo for weapons, and allowing it into Gaza.
Who in the media would call Huffington on this? Can you think of anyone who would point out this horrible and sick posting, and expose the people who agreed with it?
NBC? CNN?…… ANYONE?
FOXNEWS?

re: #221 calochortus
Hi all, I just want to introduce myself and this seems as good a thread as any. I live in the SF Bay Area, tend toward being socially liberal and fiscally conservative, and love a rational polite debate. Which would be why this is the only political site I’ve ever even felt tempted to join. I hope to be able to contribute a little value here.
I posted this late down thread and it relates to your post. Too many blogs only discuss the truth that suits their political bias, and reject truths to the right or left of them. My post relates to the blog wars over petty issues, in this case, not wanting to credit LGF for the photo cropping story, my old post:
“I hate to see disagreements between bloggers interfere with a search for truth. I didn’t like it when Lizard’s would automatically reject any links to facts from sites to the left of them here in the past, nor do I like when blogs reject LGF’s facts because of a petty grudge or our perceived move to the left.
As to AP, and Hot Air, I have a confession to make, I sometimes read his blog and see some wheat amid the chaff.
Hot Air and AP often post facts that are not at all welcome on his site, and AP gets a lot of flack for so doing. He’s been accused of being “LGF light” for his anti-Palin posts for example.
In a perfect world, sites like Hot Air and LGF would respect each other while disagreeing on many issues, and slamming each other over past bad blood. I think AP’s reluctance to credit LGF on this story was a attempt to get out a important story without seeing it rejected out of hand because of it’s source.
I often did the same in the early days of my membership here. If I found a story on Huffington, or Media Matters for example, I’d try to find a indirect link. It was silly when I had to do that, and just as silly that AP has to do the same. The real truth does not just reside on the left, right or middle, it can be found everywhere and more sites like LGF need to accept that.”
I too am a social liberal, and maybe fiscally moderate and although I had a rough patch early on, I have seen LGF mature to the point that all opinions are welcome, and that is very rare. BTW, welcome new Lizard.

I don’t do the intentionally obtuse thing, but that’s something you’ll have to take my word on over time, since my time for posting is limited. I’ll get there.
It’s clear you were NOT defending him. But my observation, poorly stated, was simply that your words indicate a greater level of anger at Thomas’s remarks than at Patso’s overall output. I was simply confused, and wondering where you were coming from with that line of thought — AS PART OF A CONVERSATION. If it appeared I was attacking, then that’s on me for not making it clear.
Your belligerence is unappreciated, and disproportionate. But that won’t keep me from attempting to engage with your thoughts when I’m curious.

So, the “Ground Zero mosque” protests continue.
They continue showing how ignorant and hateful people can be:
At one point, a portion of the crowd menacingly surrounded two Egyptian men who were speaking Arabic and were thought to be Muslims.
“Go home,” several shouted from the crowd.
“Get out,” others shouted.
In fact, the two men – Joseph Nassralla and Karam El Masry — were not Muslims at all. They turned out to be Egyptian Coptic Christians who work for a California-based Christian satellite TV station called “The Way.” Both said they had come to protest the mosque.
“I’m a Christian,” Nassralla shouted to the crowd, his eyes bulging and beads of sweat rolling down his face.
But it was no use. The protesters had become so angry at what they thought were Muslims that New York City police officers had to rush in and pull Nassralla and El Masry to safety.
“I flew nine hours in an airplane to come here,” a frustrated Nassralla said afterward.

On the other hand, it’s a step above no-registration, which is what it used to be back in the day. We had trolls who’d earn their spurs by coming onto LGF, stealing a regular’s nick, then posting the stupidest ship that he’d then quote on his home board as “proof” that we all were a bunch of mindless, hate-filled bigots and racists. Not to mention that the best you could do in those days was delete posts, but never really get rid of the troll. If you IP-banned, you ran the risk of cutting off people who had no dog in the fight, plus the troll would just change computers and be right back at it.

The bolded part is just factually incorrect. The “moderators” by and large, aren’t people.
Their post-checking is automated, using bots, and it is deeply flawed. Completely innocuous posts gets censored regularly, and ridiculously inflammatory stuff gets posted. They simply have WAY too much traffic to properly censor the comments. There are tricks to getting around the automated censors, such as opening and closing a bold tag in the middle of a word which you know the censor will flag.
It is completely fair and valid to criticize huffpo for the stories they choose to run, but you are off your rocker if you really believe that huffpo is deliberately allowing anti-Simitic rants in their comment section. They have thousands of times more traffic than LGF, probably tens of thousands. And open registration. Imagine trying to police that volume of text continuously. It’s not possible.

Good Morning LizTards (been around 4chan too long, trying to wey idiots there too….)
Here’s another daily nugget from the “Israeli Joyride Experience” (Since 1948):
Tali Pahima has converted (is that the word) to Islam.
Little background:
Taly Pahima is a girl who had some personal connection with Zekharia Zubeydi, the Fatah leader in Jenin while Israelies were trying to clean up that hell hole from those vermin. Bottom line, she was accused in consipircy and providing information to a terrorist.
Once she was released from Jail, she was approached by a muslim sheikh and he took her that oh-so enlightened route.
I guess she is just another girl with daddy issues. In the states she’d be a stripper, in the far east a child prostitute, and in Israel she bacame an extream left wing terror supporter.
Which is better ?….
Funny to mention that Zekharia Zubeydi, the leader of the Fatah in Jenin, a murderous bastard by all accounts, once captured he started “singing”, told that she as an absolute kook, and she was “too extreme” ….

The victim turned out to be a Greek Orthodox priest. They generally dress all in black, with funny hats.
Oh, and pectoral crosses. Those things are a dead giveaway that you’re a frickin’ Muslim terrorist.
Here in the neighborhood, people walk around in all kinds of garb. Djellabas and skullcaps. Long linen shirts. Saris. Turbans. I have yet to witness anyone get hated on for the clothes they wear or the language they speak. This would be the perfect neighborhood but for the unbearable Baltimore summers.
We’re getting a new pizza joint opening up soon. Franchise owned and run by Bangladeshi Muslims. So I was talking to one of them the other day and he noticed my gold cross and Star of David on my neck chain. I asked him where I could get a nice crescent-and-star to go with it, and he’s going to find me one.
I’m gonna be a walking, talking co-exist bumper sticker, hoping to blow minds on a daily basis.

…Knotts said that South Carolina is a religious community.
“We need a good Christian to be our governor,” he said. “She’s hiding her religion. She ought to be proud of it. I’m proud of my god.”Knotts says he believes Haley’s father has been sending letters to India saying that Haley is the first Sikh running for high office in America. He says her father walks around Lexington wearing a turban.
“We’re at war over there,” Knotts said.
Asked to clarify, he said he did not mean the United States was at war with India, but was at war with “foreign countries.”

Cackling femtards on “The View” defending poor Helen Thomas
Whoopi Goldberg, another show regular said:
Let me ask you this. Because for many, many, many years, there were not Jews in Israel. Okay?
Statement or question, Goldberg’s premise was wrong. Jews, and only Jews, have maintained an unbroken presence in Eretz Yisrael (the land of Israel), for more than three millennia. And despite repeated conquests and expulsions, Jews also returned from foreign exile in small numbers beginning more than 500 years ago, then in larger groups starting around 1880.
After Behar replies only with “yeah,” Goldberg ventures some mistaken, generalized diplomatic history, empathy for poor Helen Thomas kicks in.
“It’s with the way she put it. I think if she had put it maybe a diplomatic way ….” Behar suggests.
“The View’s” other panelists don’t ask what a more diplomatic way to declare “Jews back to the Third Reich” might be.

Last year an online friend from Israel was passing through NYC for a couple of days. I and another friend who’s local decided that the three of us had to get together, even if it was just for a few hours.
We got a couple of strange looks—me with my Muslim style headscarf, my Israeli friend with her Jewish one, and my other friend (who’s Christian) in typical native New Yorker street clothes. We had a blast. As we went in to get a cup of coffee, I told them that I sort of felt like we were fodder some some really corny joke: “A Jew, a Muslim and a Christian walk into a coffee shop…”

My two have only just gotten adjusted to the basement that they call home. When we first moved them, we had them locked in the basement bathroom, and it took them almost a week to come out after we opened the door to the rest of the basement. (I live on a hill and the basement is at ground level on one side, with a glass door leading outside. It fascinates and terrifies my two furry beasts.)

That could be a bloody matter. Cats that don’t know each other may take to fighting. And catfights between actual cats can be brutal.

Reminds me of the brilliant US soldier in Florida who chased down and beat up a man who he thought was dressed as a terrorist.
I can send you a few “CTR” rings to add to the decor.
heh.

It shouldn’t take them too long to get adjusted, our newest one took about three months to adjust and come out from the den where we sequestered her for the first few weeks. We’ve had her for almost a year and she goes everywhere but our bedroom because my sketchy prima dona cat has dominant claim to our bed. At least the hissing is fading now, its taken this long for Silver (our sketchy prima dona) to accept Peanut into the family. The Maine Coone Pepper is so easy going she disciplines Silver for the hissing, go figure!

We’ve been gifted with two of the oddest cat overlords. Both were rescue kitties that came home with us when they were very young. Since we’re in a very urban environment, it has always been our intention that they are INDOOR cat overlords. The odd thing is that they apparently agree. They’ll sit at the front door, happily gazing thru the screen — and whenever the door opens, they look up, apparently acknowledging that the door has moved, then resume what they were watching. They have shown zero interest in what the outside is like.
Except when a squirrel is nearby.
Otherwise, they are quite content indoors.
I’m grateful, and bemused.

We actually have 3, only two of which we keep indoors. The third was originally an indoor cat, but due to her going to the bathroom around the house, we were unable to keep her inside when we moved. She transitioned to outdoor life remarkably well, sleeping in the box we built for her and generally remaining near the house most of the time. She’s proven herself a remarkably flexible kitty. The other two, on the other hand. *laughs* At least they get along with each other very well.

I had a Siamese when I was a kid who would spray next to the box everyday. Drove my Mom nuts, we never could get rid of the smell. Missy went outside for most of the day but always came in for the night. Our vet said we could have that gland removed so she couldn’t spray but we couldn’t afford the $250.00 they wanted to do the surgery. It costs even more to do these days.

That could be a bloody matter. Cats that don’t know each other may take to fighting. And cat fights between actual cats can be brutal.
When I adopted my “newer” cat to replace the one that had died I was real careful about mixing her into the current household.
She got the den as “her” territory initially while my remaining cat got the bedroom. She was kept in that room with food, water, and a litter box for a couple of days to get oriented. Then I started leaving the door from the den to the rest of the apartment open while I kept the other cat inside the closed off bedroom (its attached bathroom is the normal litter box location - so I just made sure some food and water were there for him.) She got to explore some without direct interaction with the other cat. From there I did a few days with “shifts” where one door or the other was open so that one cat was limited to one room while the other had the run of the rest of the apartment. Did that to allow each cat to get used to the smell of the other cat.
From there I started leaving both doors open when I was there to supervise and make sure they played “nice”, and the “shift” arrangement when I wasn’t. And eventually I started leaving the doors open all the time once it was clear that they weren’t going to fight.
Worst I saw was a little growling.

Yeah. We had even thought about getting rid of the little lady, but she was our first rescue cat and she was just too stinkin’ cute. So at the last minute, we decided we’d just bring her home and park her little furry butt outside and see if she’d stick around, and she did.

I spent a week in Oro Vally, just outside of Tucson and they have all kinds of critters including Havalina and Bob Cat which can kill kitties for supper. When my parents lived in Central Oregon there were not a lot of people in the development with outdoor cats. Main threat appeared to have been coyotes. One neighbor had cats that insisted on going outside — and they mainly hung out on the roof of the house.

We do not. We are protected from governmental interference with our speech. We are protected from bodily harm (i.e. you are not allowed to assault me because you dislike my speech).
The effect is a marketplace of ideas, where the best ideas survive and propagate while the worst are revealed as bankrupt. Granted, it’s a highly imperfect marketplace (I’m talking to you, Glen), but it’s ours.
No one is going to MAKE Helen stop saying bigoted things. If she chooses to allow the societal outrage to moderate her speech, it’s still her choice.

But that would depend on the specifics, don’t you think? For example, the ever-popular n-word is not illegal in any sense, yet those who use it are ostracized and/or criticized for doing so. The further away we get from the use of it as acceptable in society, the less frequently it occurs, and people have an understanding that it’s something one shouldn’t say, and most don’t. In this instance, I see nothing negative with the process.
Is this a too-mild example, or are you getting at something else? This is a big, sticky ball of hoo-boy, what a rats’ nest sort of discussion.

Did Reuters Crop a Photo to Remove a Peace Activist’s Weapon?
In the comments someone posted a video of interviews with the wounded in the hospital in Turkey. One of them appeals to Arabs to stop working against the interests of their people. This reinforces my impression that the whole flotilla deal has more to do with internal (and maybe external) Turkish politics than it does with Israel and the Palestinians.

At the popular blog Little- GreenFootballs.com, which initially took note of the missing knife, the blog’s founder, Charles Johnson, posted the story along with exhibits of both sets of pictures.
“That’s a very interesting way to crop the photo,” Johnson wrote. “Most people would consider that knife an important part of the context. There was a huge controversy over whether the activists were armed. Cropping out a knife, in a picture showing a soldier who’s apparently been stabbed, seems like a very odd editorial decision.
It’ll be interesting to see how they run with this. If Fox can stick to the facts, they could hold Reuters’s feet to the fire. But that won’t happen if they try to tie it into some “ELEVENTY!!1” angle.

I would still say, “it depends”.
- Was the language known to be offensive by the speaker?
- Was the speaker made aware of the language issue?
- Is there a policy in place regarding use of unacceptable language?
- Does the person have public contact responsibilities?
- Was there a specific complaint?
- What was the extent of the language used?
- Was the person warned prior to termination and given an opportunity to correct it?
There are a number of factors at play. Are you referring to a specific case?

If protected speech may nevertheless be grounds for summary dismissal in the discretion of the employer, then would not the fear of such dismissal tend to stifle all protected speech which might not meet with the employer’s approval?
Yes. That’s the point.
In fact, the employer can be liable if they don’t take action, because they are responsible for providing a harassment-free workplace, even if the harassment is emanating from another employee. So at work, your speech is more heavily regulated than when you’re on your own time, and rightfully so IMHO.
However, the employer is also not allowed to discriminate on the basis of race, religion, gender, etc. So employees are protected from having their speech (or anything else) used as a pretext to fire all Christians, women, blacks, etc.
Let’s pause for a second. Why do you keep saying “protected speech”? Would you explain what you think “protected speech” means in greater detail?

re: #541 Aceofwhat?
The GOP has a lot to do with racism these days. The ‘right-wing’ in the US has a lot to do with racism in these days. So does the ‘left’, for that matter. But ‘liberal’ and ‘conservative’ have nothing to do with the purported ‘left’ and ‘right’. You can find the exact same positions held by people on the ‘left’ or the ‘right’, having arrived from a totally different first principle; or you can have the very same first principle and a difference in methedology lead to totally opposite conclusions.
The labels are mostly useless, but in the United States, with our two-party dominated system, the ‘left’ and the ‘right’ can basically mean the Democrats and their allies/hangers-on and the GOP and their allies/hangers-on. Aside from that, ‘liberal’ and ‘conservative’ themselves have very little meaning, but people like to call themselves that and the smarter ones usually mean something coherent by it— like a ‘social liberal’ is relatively easily understood to have at least some basic positions, as is a ‘social conservative’.

American Jews (aside from those who have dual citizenship) don’t vote in Israel, and Israeli policies are not their responsibility. re: #549 Aceofwhat?
This country needs new political terminology. Or just less of it in general.
There is of course some portion of the population that self-describes as ‘liberal’ that is also anti-Semitic. There are also plenty of anti-Semites that would bristle at being termed ‘liberal’. There are people, such as myself, who do not agree with some actions taken by the state of Israel. This disagreement has nothing to do with the fact that Israel is a Jewish state. That’s just coincidental. However, it is inevitable that taking a position counter to a specific action or policy of Israel will get me labeled as an anti-Semite by somebody, as the two are often conflated. It is also true that one can take a position counter to Israeli policy without holding any sympathy for the enemies of Israel, i.e., actual anti-Semites. Some of those positions might be considered “typically liberal”. That doesn’t make them anti-Semetic, no matter how many times people cry wolf.
It gets kind of ridiculous after awhile. Hence, I bristle when those with whom I share certain political positions are painted with a broad brush without deference to the variety of positions one can hold, and without consideration for the fact that one can hold a position for various reasons.
An example: Noam Chomsky has written some absolutely brilliant screeds on the nature of propaganda. He has also said some crazy shit about Israel. I agree with Chomsky in his analysis of the P.R. industry in the U.S., and want to get as far the hell away from as I can when discussing his positions on Israel. If I agree with his analysis of the P.R. industry, does that make me an anti-Semite?
These issues are far, FAR too complicated to boil down to left/right.
553 | Absalom, Absalom, Obdicut Tue, Jun 8, 2010 12:40:02pm |
Christ on a crutch is a perfectly cromulent expression.
Don’t use the phrase ‘lib’ while asking a nonsensical question.

And yes, I’ve read Peter Beinart. I think he’s too partisan and buys too much into the concept of ‘liberal’. But this article made excellent points:
Though it’s sadly out of date already, as the anti-Jewish forces in the Middle East have ratcheted up their ugliness again. But his point remains.

You’ve displayed a very high degree of ignorance about how the first amendment functions in the United States in the past. It would behoove you, if this is a subject that genuinely interests you, to read some of the excellent writing on the subject, to learn about it. Acting as though my recommendation that you read books is an attempt to shut you down, instead of an attempt to educate you on the subject, is silly.

re: #501 SanFranciscoZionist
THIS IS WHY WE NEED TO EDUCATE PEOPLE ABOUT THE REGION. There is this perception that there were no Jews in Israel up until, oh, 1945, and then the world carved them a little country to say sorry for the Shoah. THAT IS NOT HOW IT HAPPENED.
I’ve been wondering if Helen Thomas’ soundbite was actually a carefully planned suicide-bomb. She waited for the right opportunity to flip the switch, and seeing a rabbi doing interviews at a Jewish event, she found the perfect one!
Despite her resignation, she’s managed to plant two concepts in the minds of Useful Idiots everywhere: just search Twitter for Helen Thomas, you’ll see two “points” over and over again
#1. Look! Helen Thomas gets fired for what she said, but Rush Limbaugh still has a job (Thousands of people were re-tweeting things to this effect)
#2. Jews don’t belong in Israel
Helen Thomas, who I’m sure knows better, managed to convince millions of kids who get their news from Twitter that there’s some sort of powerful Jewish lobby that can get her fired (but not Rush!), and that everyone in Israel moved from Europe, and not the truth that at least half the Jews in Israel were kicked out of other neighboring mid-eastern countries, or are their descendants.
A lot of liberal kids I talk to think that it’s a “color” thing. The “white” Jews are oppressing the “brown” Arabs. Helen Thomas carefully tried to reinforce the notion that Jews are European, and therefore natural oppressors.
I think that her “suicide bomb” may have caused some collateral damage, despite her resignation. And I think it was well planned.
