The Silver Surfer #4, May 1969

Arts • Views: 6,986

Today’s cover image from the Lizard Collection is another rare comic book in near-mint condition; The Silver Surfer #4, published in May 1969.

The first seven issues of this series were published as 72-page 25-cent “giants.” Number 4 was one of the best issues, with a great Stan Lee story line featuring the Norse god Loki, who tricks the Silver Surfer into battling his half brother Thor, and beautiful artwork by John Buscema at the top of his game. Buscema said he considered this issue “the high point of his Marvel work.”

Very cool.
Though, you’d thing people would learn to just ignore anything Loki says…

But he is the Trickster. The God of Trickiness. He has tricks no other being has. He’ll trick your ass no matter how many times he’s done it before. You can’t stop him. He is Loki.

It’s fun to run against a crazy person.

I know from experience.

When I ran for mayor, my opponent waited until after his nomination to reveal that he was a bat guano conspiracy buff. Specifically, he told a visiting TV crew that the Air Force was hiding ETs and captured saucers at a nearby base, and that Burt Rutan’s famous Voyager aircraft (first un-refuelled flight around the world) was actually a secret CIA spy mission. Some of our townfolk worked for Rutan and quite a few worked at the base so this didn’t sit well.
He had much, much more to say along those lines and I did my best to keep him talking. As one voter told me, “We don’t know you real well, but you haven’t embarrassed on national TV yet.” Sometimes that is enough.

Republicans have completely fucked up their response to the oil spill. Epic fail. They were so worked up trying to damage Obama they forgot that maybe aligning with the people who actually caused the spill would be a very bad idea. There’s more than enough ammunition out there and it is going to be an issue in future elections. Some are even trying to erase history and claim credit for the escrow fund….
Do Republicans deserve partial credit for the BP fund?
I think it’s a little too late. They’d have better luck claiming credit for healthcare reform since it actually was based on their ideas.

Fat free mayo? It must be made of some kind of corn by-product. I had to read the label on fat free half and half. Losta corn syrup. It’s actually more fattening than real half and half.

The prospects of Republican gains are looking slimmer if they keep this up. They might pick up a few seats but not nearly as many as they should if they were actually concerned with helping the country instead of opposing the President.

Beats the shit out of me…I don’t even eat regular mayo. These were just a few items my wife needed to satisfy the “band riders” for a private company party she’s hosting this weekend, so I picked them up on my way home from work. When the hired entertainment can make those kinds of requests, you know the company shelled out more than a few dollars for their little shin-dig.

I find the Republican party very spooky these days. Would I vote for a candidate who refuses to denounce Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Tea Parties or Birch society? I’d be more than happy to vote for Republicans who want to reform their party and get back to serious political ideas. I don’t think many Republicans are interested in that.

I think it’s a little too late. They’d have better luck claiming credit for healthcare reform since it actually was based on their ideas.

Absolutely right on target.

Yea dad…She told me..
Well what the hell is she going to do?
I don’t know dad..
She should move into your old room..
Sure pops..I’m sure that’s the first thing that popped into her head..Move in with grandpa..
She got laid off!
I know dad…
What is she going to do?

I hope Nikki comes up with something soon. Unemployed is no fun.

re: #78 albusteve

he’s born and raised in NOLA…don’t think there is any KC connection

He wuz a musician, Steve. They get around, and he wasn’t always famous. I have no idea if he ever played there before he started recording, but it sounds pretty comfortable - a lot like New Orleans, if fact.

Although Kansas City, Missouri is known primarily for jazz, it has also contributed to the history of and the preserverance of the blues.
Kansas City did not enter into blues history until the 1940s. Kansas City blues artists Pete Johnson and Big Joe Turner recorded a style of music called jump blues, which later provided the foundation for rhythm and blues, and later rock and roll. Charlie Parker dabbled in the blues in the late 1940s with his release of “Now’s the Time”, a bebop jazz number that gave a nod to the popularity of the blues in Kansas City, by using the familiar blues pentatonic scale and blue notes.
The blues scene in Kansas City produced Jay McShann, Sonny Kenner, Little Hatch and Cotton Candy and the blues was popular in small nightclubs and after-hours jam sessions. Many Kansas City musicians would finish their “paying” gigs at weddings, jazz clubs etc. and then pack up and head to the 18th and Vine-Downtown East, Kansas City district to participate in all-night parties that would sometimes continue well into daylight.

Here’s a first-hand report of a recent Tea Party (notice I didn’t say teabagger) event.

Here’s the summary paragraph as I suspect you’ll not bother reading the diary if you go so far as to follow the link:

What I learned: Though I had read it and heard it, nothing beats direct observation. The people in this room were not merely inexperienced grassroots organizers—they had no idea how to coalesce a movement, recruit members, articulate a platform, gather and analyze facts, or even operate rudimentary audio-visual equipment. They had no instincts for critical thinking, preferring instead to be told what to do by authority figures who seem to have information they agree with. They felt more comfortable relinquishing responsibility for the outcome of events on God than taking responsibility themselves. Two or three seemed to have the ability to argue more than one side of an issue or to address mainstream perceptions of their efforts. But overall, they appeared to be looking not for a way to blaze a new trail of political thought, but for validation of an extremely isolated, provincial viewpoint. Though the experience of sitting in that room was one of the most dismaying in my life, ranking right up there with being told in the delivery room that my epidural had failed, I came away with the conviction that this group was ignorant, annoying, and clueless, but not, ultimately, a threat to democracy, mainstream politics, or the Geek Squad.

I got some heat a few days ago for posting that I like to bash the prez. It’s true though. He is the top guy - and in my mind he has, and is, making mistakes. I like to point them out - in the hope that he course corrects.

This past week he did in fact take my advice. He summoned the BP execs to the White House, met face to face and told them his expectations. They walked away with BP ponying up $20 Billion. Obama gets to take credit for that. He did exactly what I proposed he do. Good job!

I think the reason for the escrow is that it can be paid out immediately. Communities spent decades in court with exxon over the Valdeze spill.
Also since the money is already in escrow BP can’t weasel out of paying or declare bankruptcy to avoid their obligation. It’s very hard to come up with a good reason to oppose the escrow account.

So after my repeated urging I finally got mom to go and see an actual doctor (a very good neurosurgeon) instead of all these “new age woo peddler” quacks. He spent about five minutes with her x-rays and MRI scans (on disk) and diagnosed her as having Spondylosis.
[Link: en.wikipedia.org…]

Problem is he insisted she go in for surgery immediately before any more permanent nerve damage could accrue. She is obviously adverse to having major (although routine) surgery done on her neck, and has attempted to seek out second, third, and fourth opinions before it is done. I picked this doctor, I asked around, I looked up his record, I checked him out six ways to Sunday and I personally trust his judgment.

He didn’t say it (he didn’t have to) but this entire last surgery on her shoulder was completely pointless and did nothing but make the Dr. involved money. It has nothing at all to do with her shoulder it is her cervical spine.

No wonder so many people are becoming skeptical of “science” you have thousands of people peddling quack cures that don’t work (and even surgical procedures) out there while being endorsed and paid for by the government.

The $20 billion will be funded over a few years, how many I’m not sure. Perhaps this can be legislated since nothing else seems to have been.

A reason BP agreed to this is for cost certainty reasons, to help support their stock price while the true cost of the disaster is ironed out.

I truly hope she does something. A life in pain is to be avoided if at all possible.

I don’t see BP kicking and screaming. In the long run this may also prove beneficial to BP’s survival. No noticeable shock in their stock price either. Down 47% from April 20th but now the shareholders are looking at a concrete plan which includes this escrow fund. If this WSJ is correct they will be paying the 20 billion out over the course of 3 1/2 years or 5.71 billion per year. I’m rather certain they’ll be able to handle that.

I’m withholding judgment until I’ve seen results. The guy managing the escrow fund announced today he expects to start making payments within 60 days. 60 days is still less than 20 years, according to the old math.

I’m an old fashioned conservative, not by party affiliation but on principle, it is my lifestyle and my thought process…I’ve never registered with a political party…and never will…I don’t give a damn who speaks for me, whether it’s the GOP or not, if they don’t so be it, but as the GOP hangs it’s hat on their new wave ideology bear in mind that they left me behind, I’ve not been dragged off with them and they can go wherever the hell they want…I have always found politics interesting but that’s about it…I’m not interested in regional races, I’m not interested in Beck or Rush or Palin or Fox or anyone else that sits around and talks all day about their agenda and the next he said/she said outrage…I’m interested in boots on the ground, what’s getting done or not and who’s to blame…Alex Jones is nobody to me, you can scream all day long about lunatics like him, but I tell you now there are plenty like him already in office….those are the cats I consider…I’m in the real here and now, not yesterday or tomorrow….everything else is meaningless to me

And I can guarantee you that in August when people are being supported by this money in Louisiana, Alabama, Florida and Mississippi, that the Republicans who live there will be bragging about how much they had a hand in getting that funding for their constituents.

(as a side note, I noticed that when I typed those states, my brain said, “Louisiana”, “Alabama”, and “Florida”, but then as I typed I was thinking “M-I-S-S-I-S-S-I-P-P-I”…funny.)

That’s exactly right.

It would be different if there was a real concern with due process — it’s always dangerous to break the law or establish a precedent in the name of a “good cause”. But there simply isn’t a valid concern in this case. The US government has no reason to tie its own hands in a negotiation with BP over this; governments rightly throw their weights around all the time when dealing with private institutions in matters of national interest.

I don’t think that’s applicable to this case. Legally, BP can’t be forced to pay more than the stipulated liability. But there’s nothing wrong with the Executive, when dealing with BP, to say something to the effect of “don’t expect future leases of mineral rights to be going your way if you don’t deal with this to our satisfaction”. That’s what is being called a “shakedown” here, and there is no reason, legal or moral, for the government not to use its negotiating power in what’s clearly a matter of national interest.

reine, are your hubbie’s skills translatable to land drilling? Up here in Sask Canuckville we’ve just handed out a record number of oil leases and we’re short of workers.

We still have the strategic reserve. Bush tapped into it before the 2004 elections, so there is a precedent for using it to keep gas prices down. But I think we’ve got enough sources that we’ll get through the next six months okay regardless of the moratorium.

Couple weeks in Mendocino sounds really good. Have you checked out Gualala on the coast up there? I love that place.

Yes, I do count myself lucky. Love, love, love. Gualala. Point Arena, too, though my heart just may belong to that itty bitty town of Elk. Cuffy’s Cove.

No one seems to believe me.
If the moratorium lasts for the full six months, drilling will be dead for at least two years, possibly more.

The rigs will enter into long-term contracts with companies elsewhere, and that’s where they will be, not here.

A rig cannot be built quickly - usual time to build a rig - 8 to 10 years - so there won’t be replacement rigs popping up quickly. No rigs = no drilling, regardless of whether or not the moratorium is lifted or in place.

Is that so?
Yes, he’s drilled land, regular Gulf wells and deepwater.

He actually is still employed; his company is keeping their most experienced folks.
If his company is chosen as the mud company for some of those leases, I expect some of their employees will end up there; maybe the Roi as well. That would be a LOT better than Brazil or Nigeria.

Enjoy yourself. It’s beautiful there and Cuffy’s has a familiar look to it.

Good to hear.

When the recession hit, Alberta’s oil sand work took a dive but because we had just started a growth spurt and much of our oil is untapped our oil industry kept growing, albeit at a reduced rate. As Canada recovers from the recession demand for workers here is growing.

You might want to do a little research for Canadian jobs if it looks like the Roi will end up in Brazil. At least keep an open mind about it.

We might do that, that actually had crossed my mind.
We also need to look at the Canadian laws for employment of “aliens” which is what the Roi would be.

BTW - I don’t know if you know anyone involved in that, but if you do and they truly would like to recruit here - the Louisiana Department of Labor has a job placement service, no charge of course, and would LOVE, I’m sure, to get job notices and be able to place folks!
