Texans willing to pay higher taxes for teacher pay, water
"...Seventy-four percent of registered voters would be willing to pay more in taxes to raise teacher pay, according to a new poll by the non-partisan, non-profit Texas Lyceum leadership group.
They decidedly wouldn’t be willing to pay more for school administration (only 20 percent would fork over more for this).
The poll comes after lawmakers and Gov. Rick Perry cut back hard on public school funding in response to last year’s budget crunch, and as some are pressing to restore money to schools.
Also on state revenue, 64 percent said they would be willing to pay more in water tap fees to ensure state water needs are met."

Honestly, I don't even feel the need to dig too deep into a single poll. It's a single poll. When we see more than one out of dozens with this sort of result, I'll give it more than thirty seconds of attention. Same deal with a poll that IIRC put Obama up something like seven points last week. Outliers happen.

Problem is that the media and RCP are treating the outliers like the main event, while the more consistent polls are being either downplayed or outright rejected. Catch the beginning of NBC Nightly News tonight and they were practically drooling over the Pew Poll, then brought up the Gallup poll showing Obama's lead back to 5 points as if it was the outlier.

But really, let's be honest, part of what dropped Obama's numbers was overblown expectations. A lot of us, and I'll admit myself included, went into the debate expecting Obama to blow Willard out of the water and pretty much end the election then and there. What we didn't expect was that Willard would choose that night to reinvent himself as a "moderate conservative" or that he'd lie his ass off to do so. Obama certainly didn't seem to believe what he was hearing, because he looked like he was in danger of crushing his molars with how hard he was clenching his jaw.
And because we went in with those overblown expectations, we now blame Obama for not being prepared for Willard's chameleon act. I've read the same excuse on several boards: "Obama gave up." No he didn't, you gave up on him. You wanted him to be the messiah, he wasn't, and now you're blaming him for not living up to your expectations.

Romney Proudly Explains How He's Turned Campaign Around
'I'm Lying More,' He Says
“I’m lying a lot more, and my lies are far more egregious than they’ve ever been,” a smiling Romney told reporters while sitting in the back of his campaign bus, adding that when faced with a choice to either lie or tell the truth, he will more than likely lie. “It’s a strategy that works because when I lie, I’m essentially telling people what they want to hear, and people really like hearing things they want to hear. Even if they sort of know that nothing I’m saying is true.”
“It’s a freeing strategy, really, because I don’t have to worry about facts or being accurate or having any concrete positions of any kind,” Romney added.

If I had to guess, I'd say Pew has always sucked in their polling. I mean, let's get serious....Obama was probably NEVER close to +10 in this race, but Pew's had a number of polls around that level.
That's just not how this country works anymore. Romney would have to come out and say his favorite book is Mein Kampf to lose by that much, and even then, he still might be closer than 10.
Also, Pew is one of those polls that I've generally seen get mocked by people on both sides.

re: #89 JamesWI
If I had to guess, I'd say Pew has also sucked in their polling.
Yeah I remember a Pew poll with Obama ahead by 10. I knew it was absolute nonsense and the MSM reported is as an outlier. But they aren't doing it now even thought the cross tabs are equally ridiculous.

It's Obama's job to get undecideds on board, not cater to my desire to see Romney get a comeuppance. There's 2 debates left, my guess is Romney has set his "tone" for the next debates. Be interesting to see how the next one goes.
Thing is, the pool of undecideds this time around is at a historically low number. Obama's biggest pressure is keeping supporter enthusiasm up and keeping them from defecting. And, as usual, Democrats are their own worst enemies.

I don't know. But any poll with 70% of voters over 50 and 84% white should be thrown out automatically. It may be difficult to predict what the electorate will be on election day, but it won't look like that.
Agreed completely--we haven't had an 84% white electorate since the late 80s-early 90s. And, while the country is aging, it's not aging anywhere near that fast.

There is a subtle criticism of Romney in all the praise he's getting for winning the debate. The main issue seems to be that Obama didn't push back on Romney, not that Romney was inspirational. All the praise has been focused on style, not that Romney switched some of his main positions or even explained how his ideas would work. I found myself confused as he was saying he never advocated for 5 trillion dollar tax cuts.

Texas has notified (living) voters that they are "potentially deceased."
Last year, the Texas Legislature passed a bill to ensure dead people were kept off its voter rolls. States have long been required to maintain clean voter rolls, so such updating isn't new.
But Texas went further, giving the secretary of state authority to conduct voter roll purges using relatively loose criteria like shared names and birthdate.
The result is that live voters have received notice that if they don't respond within 30 days, they're assumed dead and will be removed from the voter rolls.
The state's largest voting district, Harris County, has sent such letters to about 4,000 "potentially deceased" voters.
"Several hundred responded that said, 'Yeah, I'm still alive,'" said Fred King, communications manager for the Harris County Voter Registrar and Tax Office.
Election experts say that's not surprising. "The problem is that there is a much higher incidence of sharing names and birth dates than people realize," said David Becker, director of election initiatives at the Pew Center on the States.
Just one example: there are are 21,078 people in Texas named Alvarado.

Going into the first debate, as long as Romney didn't shit himself on stage, he would have probably been considered the winner, because everyone assumed Obama would destroy the robot.
At this point, Obama has essentially completely flipped the script. Romney's now the DEBATE KING and he's clearly getting cocky on the campaign trail. As long as Obama isn't as "bad" as he was last Wednesday, it's going to be seen as a loss for Romney.
And considering Romney bet his entire campaign on the premise that the debates would be all he needed to win, just one loss in a debate could be devastating.
I don't want to sound like Al Gore or any other debate excuse-makers out there.....but are we absolutely sure this wasn't part of the plan.

I fear a crisis of legitimacy regardless of who wins the election. First, chances are it will be close, and the populace is even more polarized than during our last two close elections--2000 and 2004. The Right no longer trusts anything from the MSM, including most polls or anything else involving scientific data, so if Obama wins they'll be shocked and blame it all on voter fraud.
OTOH, if Romney wins, voter suppression may be a factor. And the left will see him as an illegitimate president. Growing and evolving and diversifying as a nation aren't always easy---lots of ugliness along the way. Especially given our intense cultural, ethnic, religious differences and resentments that, more and more, fuel the polarization. Just take religion: for most of our history, we had two basically secular parties. Now we have one overtly religious party and a party that's still secular. It's the kind of development we see in societies that are dysfunctional and extremely divided.

...from his book, "God's Law: The Only Political Solution."
I have more for you today. To save space, I've omitted the Biblical citation for Fuqua's endorsement of the death penalty for rebellious children. Fuqua doesn't think execution would have to be used often on children who defied their parents, but suggests the deterrent effect of its legality would be beneficial. Verbatim, from the writing of Charlie Fuqua, a former lawyer for the Arkansas Department of Human Services:
The maintenance of civil order in society rests on the foundation of family discipline. Therefore, a child who disrespects his parents must be permanently removed from society in a way that gives an example to all other children of the importance of respect for parents. The death penalty for rebellioius children is not something to be taken lightly. The guidelines for administering the death penalty to rebellious children are given in Deut 21:18-21:
…
This passage does not give parents blanket authority to kill their children. They must follow the proper procedure in order to have the death penalty executed against their children. I cannot think of one instance in the Scripture where parents had their child put to death. Why is this so? Other than the love Christ has for us, there is no greater love then [sic] that of a parent for their child. The last people who would want to see a child put to death would be the parents of the child. Even so, the Scrpture provides a safe guard to protect children from parents who would wrongly exercise the death penalty against them. Parents are required to bring their children to the gate of the city. The gate of the city was the place where the elders of the city met and made judicial pronouncements. In other words, the parents were required to take their children to a court of law and lay out their case before the proper judicial authority, and let the judicial authority determine if the child should be put to death. I know of many cases of rebellious children, however, I cannot think of one case where I believe that a parent had given up on their child to the point that they would have taken their child to a court of law and asked the court to rule that the child be put to death. Even though this procedure would rarely be used, if it were the law of land, it would give parents authority. Children would know that their parents had authority and it would be a tremendous incentive for children to give proper respect to their parents.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the world from Honey Boo Boo:
Russian Deputy Calls for Creationism to be Taught in School
A Russian lawmaker has proposed introducing alternative theories of human evolution to Darwinism, including creationist ideas, into the obligatory school syllabus.
State Duma Deputy Vyacheslav Lysakov stressed, however, that he thought the move should not be made immediately, and emphasized it was his personal point of view.
Several Russian papers reported recently that United Russia parliamentarians have proposed changing the secondary school history program to include not only Darwin’s theory of evolution but also faith-based alternatives.
“I was answering the question whether I agree that Darwin’s theory prevails in school books as the only true one. I said probably it is incorrect, considering Darwin’s theory raises serious questions and is widely criticized,” Lysakov said, adding it would be right to set out several theories of human evolution including one based on religion. [TEACH THE CONTROVERSY!!]
“Moreover we have a lot of believers and having only one theory is incorrect,” he said, adding “of course, we are not preparing any law on this.”
Schoolchildren are already taught that Darwin's theory is not the only theory of human origins, State Duma Education Committee member and former head of Federal Education Agency Grigory Balykhin said.
Starting this year, fourth-graders will have the opportunity to study a new subject, Fundamentals of Religion. As part of this course, they can choose a more detailed study of the principles of a particular religion, the history of all religions in general or can study ethics at their request, he said.
“I think that additional study of this issue in history lessons is unnecessary, as there is a special course for it.” Balykhin said.Darwin, a British biologist, began developing his theory of evolution and natural selection in 1838 after sailing around the world with the Royal Navy and observing wildlife and plants. His book, "The Origin of Species" was first published in 1859.
The theory suggests natural species, including man, have evolved slowly over time in response to a process of natural selection, in which those with certain advantageous characteristics are most likely to succeed in breeding, passing on those characteristics to subsequent generations.
The theory has since come under criticism from other scientists as well as religious critics who say it is atheistic.
Note how the Ria Novosti writer just throws in that last paragraph as if there indeed is merit to creationism.

Mexican navy kills drug lord in shootout.
The Mexican navy says that the leader of the powerful Zetas drug cartel, Heriberto Lazcano, has apparently been killed in a shootout near the US border.
The navy said in a statement that it was still awaiting final forensic results, but that the body appeared to be Lazcano, aka 'El Lazca (The Executioner)', the leader of the feared cartel, which has been implicated in a string of mass killings.
The shootout reportedly occurred in Coahuila, one of the border states that have been at the epicentre of Mexico's vicious drug war, believed to have claimed some 60,000 lives since the launch of a military crackdown in 2006.
US authorities say the Zetas are one of Mexico's most powerful gangs alongside the Pacific region's Sinaloa federation, led by fugitive billionaire Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.
Much of the north-east is in the clutches of the Zetas cartel, which was founded by former Mexican special forces soldiers who went rogue and are known for decapitating and dismembering their enemies.
The Zetas were originally hired as enforcers for the Gulf Cartel, but turned on their employers and have fought them for control of lucrative drug routes to the United States.

I find a lot of people simply cannot fathom how expensive it is to live in a big city. $100K is not a lot of money for a family in Chicago or NY. That is why so many "people" are talking about poverty and such in America. Two people working a low level job in Chicago CANNOT make enough to cover their expenses. It is a very big deal.

Having said that, he deserves credit for realizing about 8 years ago that his party was no longer conservative in the traditional sense: they had become reactionary, theocratic, and extremely right wing. He was also one of the first quasi-neocons to admit that the whole philosophy and project in Iraq/Afghanistan was deeply flawed.
And, his is a consistently entertaining site—in many ways.

NASA’s Rover Finds Mysterious Bright Object on Mars
After having found evidence of water on the surface of Mars, Nasa's Curiosity rover has now provided another breakthrough for the space agency's Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission.
The Curiosity rover has reportedly found a bright object buried in the Martian surface, after its first scoop of the planet's soil on 7 October. Scientists remain very cautious, speculating it could be nothing more than a piece of the rover itself that had fallen off and refused to comment without a proper investigation.
"Team spotted bright object on ground near me-possibly a piece of rover hardware? Gathering more data [info]," Nasa tweeted on the official account of the Curiosity rover.
Scooping has been temporarily halted while the process of identification of the object and possible impact on the mission is completed.

Note how the Ria Novosti writer just throws in that last paragraph as if there indeed is merit to creationism.
Couple this with the Russian Orthodox church changing its stand on whether R.O. priests can hold political positions, and the increasing pressure being brought forward by the R.O. church against protest groups (e.g., Pussy Riot), it seems like Russia is one step closer to theocracy than even the GOP.

Taliban says it shot ‘infidel’ Pakistani teen for advocating girls’ rights
A 14-year-old Pakistani activist who won international acclaim for speaking out for girls denied education under the Taliban was shot Tuesday on her way home from school, authorities said.
The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack on ninth-grader Malala Yousafzai, who officials said was shot in the neck by at least one gunman who approached a school bus in Mingora, a city in the scenic Swat valley in the country’s northwest.
....
Ihsanullah Ihsan, chief spokesman for the Pakistani Taliban, said in calls to the media that the militant group targeted Yousafzai because she generated “negative propaganda” about Muslims.“She considers President Obama as her ideal. Malala is the symbol of the infidels and obscenity,” Ihsan said.

But here's the thing - Pakistan wasn't always this bad. My parents grew up there, and I don't recall hearing about this sort of heinous garbage going on around them. It's only because of the asshole leaders who came along later and kissed up to religious extremists for power (sound familiar?) that things have regressed and devolved to this point.
Moral of the story? Beware. Civilization can - and will - shrivel up and die if ignorant religious extremists are given too much power.

Man Accused Of Unusual Threats Against Obama & Romney
Akron, OH (WJW) — A convicted sex offender was arrested and charged with making death threats against President Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
Brandon Britton, 51, of Akron, was in federal custody after an arrest warrant was issued by a federal judge in Akron on Monday.
...According to the nine-page federal complaint, Britton joined the online dating service Mega Mates earlier this year, but wanted to cancel his membership.
The complaint alleges Britton repeatedly called the website’s customer service agents and threatened to do torturous and sexual things to their children if they did not cancel his membership.
Britton faces a third federal charge for those threats.
Britton was recorded as saying that he is “…anti-government and going to kill President Obama and Governor Romney,” according to the complaint.

Gaza rockets pound southern Israel
Palestinian terrorists operating out of the Gaza Strip fired as many as 50 rockets and mortar shells into southern Israel on Monday, as Israelis were marking the final day of the biblical festival of Sukkot - the Feast of Tabernacles.
Most of the rockets landed in open areas and did not cause any injuries or damage, but some did strike residential buildings and a petting zoo, killing and wounding several of the animals.
Israeli army sources said the Palestinians were able to fire so many rockets in such a short period of time thanks to the recent acquisition of sophisticated launchers capable of firing multiple rockets at once.
The barrage came a day after Israeli forces targeted two wanted terrorists traveling by motorcycle in the Gaza Strip. Israeli officials identified the two men, members of an Al Qaeda-inspired group, as being involved in recent deadly attacks emanating from the Egyptian Sinai.

Moonbat news from Pakistan...
Code Pink joins Pakistani political party in anti-drone protest
A group of Americans joined thousands of Pakistanis to complete a two-day and 230-mile peace march across the country yesterday to protest America’s use of drones in Pakistan's tribal areas.
A party of 30 men and women between the ages of 22 and 80 years old were organized by the American anti-war coalition Code Pink. They joined Pakistani cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan, and thousands of protestors from his party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI).
The two-day march was set to travel from Islamabad toSouth Waziristan, a region known for American drone attacks, Pakistani Army operations, and Islamist militants. However, the march stopped short of entering the tribal area when the Army turned Mr. Khan and his supporters away. Code Pink turned back even earlier — at Dera Ismail Khan, the last stop before South Waziristan – citing security threats to the delegation.
...Dressed in pink and holding banners saying “Stop Killer Drones,” Code Pink's delegation made V-signs and sang “We're marching to Waziristan” and “We're hoping for a drone-free world” at a rally organized in Islamabad, before taking off on a 14-hour bus ride from the capital the following day.
With their coordinated colors, the delegation of Americans said they were ready to risk their lives for killings caused by their government, thousands of miles away from their homes in the United States.
“I’m 71 years old [and] I’m ready to die for this cause," said Linda Welling, a member of Code Pink fromPortland, Ore., leaning back in her seat in a bus plastered with pictures of children killed in American drone attacks.
“How is our government any better than the militants we battle?” asks Joan Nicholson, a 78-year-old member of Code Pink who was once arrested inWashington for shouting “We are a terrorist nation!”

Bristol Palin receives death threat on set of DWTS
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and the FBI have joined forces to investigate a possible death threat against Dancing With the Stars All-Star Bristol Palin.
According to TMZ, a package addressed to Bristol containing a white powdery substance was opened on the CBS lot in West Hollywood.
The package also contained a note, demanding Bristol be removed from the show ... or else.
The note also stated that additional and similar packages would be delivered if Sara Palin’s daughter wasn’t removed from the DWTS show.

I was a 2-pack-a-day smoker until the day I caught bacterial pneumonia. I spent 10 days hardly able to breathe, let alone smoke. By the end of it I had (a) survived the physical symptoms of nicotine withdrawal (they were all mixed in with the miserableness of the pneumonia anyway) and (b) gotten a foretaste of what emphysema might be like.
Haven't had a smoke since, and it's been nearly 20 years.

Danny Glover celebrates Hugo Chavez's election win in Venezuela
The Lethal Weapon star struck up a friendship with the politician years ago and he joined in the party this weekend after Chavez emerged triumphant in the closest race of his 14 years in office.
In video footage captured by local TV station Noticiero Digital, Glover can be seen embracing and playfully sparring with Chavez, who is battling cancer, moments after news of his victory broke.
Glover isn't the President's only fan in Hollywood - actor Sean Penn and director Oliver Stone have also previously voiced their admiration and support for the controversial world leader, who has landed another six years as the head of state.

I'm not sure about this, but my understanding is that polling in a place like Venezuela can miss large swaths of people who simply aren't reachable. If those people are predisposed to support Chavez (likely) then you could see a result like this legitimately.
That being said...it still looks fishy as hell.

I imagine one's answer to this would depend on their point of view. I have friends from Venezuela (who fled because of Chavez) and they'll accept no answer other than he rigs elections and uses violence against his opponents.
I'm sure a Chavez supporter would say it's because he's for the people and against American imperialism.

US man suspected of links to al-Qaeda arrested in Yemen
A US citizen suspected of having links to al-Qaeda has been arrested in Yemen, officials have told the BBC.
The man was detained in Ataq, in the province of Shabwa, the scene of an ongoing conflict between Islamist militants and Yemen's armed forces.
He was then transferred by military plane to the capital, Sanaa, where he was being investigated by the security services, the officials said.
The arrest took place on Monday. No details were given about his identity.
The man was wearing Arab clothes when he was arrested in the Sharqa Hotel in Ataq, according to a report on the privately-owned Yemeni news website, Yemen Fox, which quoted a local official.
The suspect spoke English, said he was a Muslim, and had three passports - two US and one German - in his possession, another official was quoted by the AFP news agency as saying.

My question is how the impoverished people of Venezuela feel compelled or a need to re-elect Chavez. How that impoverished base is maintained could delve into a conspiracy theory which would be as much as saying the vote count was fraudulent. The fact is that it may be real. The winners in the end are both the Chavistas and the capitalists that rely on a cheap labor/impoverished class. How much different is this from China, etc? We cry about Chavez yet readily blow off the far greater injustices of China as we shop in the local Apple store.

It's hard to gauge his popular support. He's been running an authoritarian agenda of shutting down opposition tv, radio and newspapers, arresting reporters. How much control he has over voting and polls is questionable. He might be genuinely popular enough to win elections or he just might have enough control to game the system. It's not a free country.

I thought about that in the MBF sense, but from my point of view, the Dem. base (I guess we're assuming poorer people here to equate the arguments?) will vote for somebody because they think that person will give them a chance, or some help. The Republican base will vote for somebody who they know will do nothing for them economically, but, hey, social issues and social identification (Rep. Cons.).

When we think times are tough, this puts in perspective how luck we really are...
Abu Stayf says he has lost his wife and six children; they were all killed when a rocket landed on his house.
Yet he refuses to leave. He sleeps in an abandoned basement on a street where rotting rubbish piles up and rubble from shelled buildings spills across the pavement.
Caught in a no-man's land between government forces and rebel fighters, he asks: "Where should I go? You'll die wherever you go. Our homes have been destroyed, our children are dead and we have no-one left."
The bakery just down the road was the target of a government attack a few weeks ago in which 20 people died, according to activists.
It was the final straw for many of the residents and most of them have now fled.
But Abu Stayf won't leave. He sits on a vinyl-covered chair with two friends while artillery shells crash in neighbouring streets; the sound and fury of gun battles breaking bouts of pregnant silence.
"We have no food, no water, no electricity. There is shelling every day, bombardment every day," he says.

Goin' down to the Gynt Igl to get some chipped-chopped before the Stiller game comes on. ;)

I don't recognize that one. I do remember that the car "needed washed."
I didn't realize that my father said "slippy" rather than "slippery" until I was exposed to a book of Pittsburghese expressions when attending college. Then I developed an ear for picking up the expressions when I heard them.
I don't speak like a western PA person, my accent is western/northern NY state due to my mother and where I attended a majority of my initial schooling. (Creek pronounced "crick", Roof as "ruh-f" instead of "roo-f", etc.)
