OT, but an update on the flooding situation here in the Czech Republic.
The Vltava (Moldau) River running through Prague is currently at a rate of 3000 cubic meters per second. It’s normal rate is 240 cubic meters per second. So they’re getting panicky in Prague; the Vltava has yet to crest, which should happen in the next day or so.
The Labe (Elbe) River has flooded several towns in its path, including - once again - Mělnik, which lies at the confluence of the Vltava and Elbe Rivers.
So far, 7 dead, and some 9,000 forced to leave their homes. The most affected areas are Southern and Central Bohemia, with some areas of Southern Moravia affected as well. My neck of the woods, Moravian Silesia, has escaped any flooding thus far.

At least they get animatronic dinosaurs. All we get locally is this:
A visit to the creation museum
You arrive and drive through heavy black iron gates and walk past a few cheesy dino sculptures in front. These include a miniature T. rex based on the outdated concept with tail dragging behind it. (At least they don’t claim that the predatory dinos ate coconuts. not meat, with their long sharp teeth, as Ken Ham’s museum does). There is a Galapagos tortoise model, a small ankylosaur, and a replica of a dinosaur egg nest, with the false statement that dinosaurs did not take care of their young (long ago debunked by Jack Horner’s Maiasaura nests in Montana). Once inside, there is a lobby with a reception desk and a gift shop which has more products from Ken Ham’s organization than it does from the old ICR gang. The docent that Ross and Carrie wanted to interview was already inside giving a tour, so we headed right in.
The very first exhibit set the pattern of the whole museum: large display object, with several placards with way too many words in tiny type that no one can read, full of creationist lies and misstatements. In this case, it was a huge slab of orthoceratid nautiloids and goniatite ammonoids (both misidentified) from the fossil mines of the Devonian Tindouf Basin of Morocco; these fossils are ubiquitous among the commercial fossil dealers and rock shops these days. The text of the placard claimed they were all lined up by the Great Flood! Ironically, the creationists were bamboozled by the Moroccans here, because real paleontologists know from experience that these big Moroccan fossil slabs (where the fossils are nicely spaced out and lined up and all of the same size) are fakes made of real fossils cast into a cleverly disguised concrete base. They could be an “art object” as they are sold in many places, but they are not a natural assemblage—and the “orientation” of the long nautiloids was done by Moroccan craftsmen, not by the Great Flood. Yet another irony: creationists mock paleontologists for the rare instances where they were fooled by a hoax—but this museum features a hoaxed specimen in its first exhibit, with a creationist interpretation, yet the creationists are not competent enough in paleontology to spot a hoax when they bought one!

Most annoying is seeing politicians like Paul Ryan who benefited personally through things like Pell Grants, student loans, etc try to cut them. It’s like “Sorry we got ours but you have to fend for yourself.” One Republican Congressman even tried to sell higher interest rates on loans as a way of teaching kids that personal responsibility is cool. Like an overbearing parent, all they can think when they look at young voters is “They’ll come around.” “Give’em a few years, when they got a job, kids, and a mortgage, and then they’ll see things our way.”
I’m not sure why, the moment I have kids and a mortgage, I’m supposed to suddenly hate gays, believe global warming is a hoax, or think cutting spending will magically increase GDP, but then again, I’m not part of the GOP’s “braintrust”.

No one helped me out when I was on welfare! Didn’t he pretty much say that? I wanted someone to smack the dude because it was just so stupid. And then there was the one Republican congresswoman who argued against increasing the minimum wage using the rate she got as a teenager which adjusted for inflation is more than what it is now. I think conservatives at their core are people who hate the government but yet want the government to be the enforcer of their morality. It’s a twisted marriage between Biblical literalism and Ayn Rand Objectivism.

The tax credit program might sunset without them taking advantage of that, though I expect them to lobby to get it extended so they can get this done on taxpayer dime.

It is not your naturalization certificate that makes you an American — the certificate only makes you a U.S. citizen. Rather, what makes you an American is your unconditional belief this is your country.
So documentation alone won’t do it then. Rather a new super loyalty oath requiring an unapologetic affirmation of American Exceptionalism is needed.
In addition, a test must be passed, 100%, providing the correct answers to questions selected, and answers judged by, a non-bi-partisan group, like the tea party patriots.

OK, home improvement geeks.
Saw this lady on pinterest who plasticized paper with silicone and then sewed with it.
So, for my bookbinding project, I thought that the plasticized paper would work well for my endsheets and the spine part where the edges of the bound papers kinda fan out.
In the tutorial pictures (not video) we only were shown the tip of the silicone and it looked like a regular caulk tube tip. So I go to the store and check out the silicone caulk products.
I decide on one that is in a regular tube (because caulk guns are a PITA and I don’t want to buy that much). Indoor, outdoor, clear, dries to touch in 3 hours -totally in 24. Anyway, it worked well, but not really. It is too “tacky” or rubbery to the touch. won’t work well for my purposes.
Can you think of any other product that might fit the description of “silicone” that would end up smooth and not tacky?

re: #168 Absalom, Absalom, Obdicut
Some kind of epoxy?
No, I don’t think a two-part system would work.
I just don’t want to buy every silicone product out there to figure out which will works best. It has to be smooth and pliable.
I know it’s a caulk type product because of the tip that was shown in the pictures.
I might try what I bought again but put a very, very, minute thin layer on.

Only one customer review:
GE Premium Waterproof Silicone is the worst caulk I have ever used. I have been using various types of caulking for 30 years and have never had difficulty smoothing out the bead with my finger and cleaning up the residue with a paper towel or rag. This does not work with this product. It starts to smooth out but leaves a residue everywhere you don’t want it and is impossible to remove with soap and water or any solvent I have. Supposedly it will “flake off” once dry. Great! I’ve been removing as much as I can so I can start over with another product and have concluded that my tile job is now a disaster. I think in their attempt to make a product that dries quickly, GE has made it impossible to work with. Shame on you GE!

Skip the goo entirely, and use self-adhesive mylar sheeting. Lots of colors including clear and metallics.

re: #167 FemNaziBitch
I Googled silicone coated paper and it does look like she used ordinary silicone caulk/sealer for her project. Have you tried something like Fray Block(available at fabric stores)? If I recall correctly it is a plastic of some sort in alcohol, meaning it is very liquid and penetrates fabric and paper well. It is intended, as the name suggests, for use on unfinished fabric edges to prevent raveling, but you can also use it to make fabric hold a shape (like a fabric leaf or petal with a bit of curve in it.) I haven’t tried using it for paper, but it is flexible and colorless and might be worth a try. There are other brands including Fray Check, which is stiffer when dry and discolors a bit more. It may just be that it contains more plastic or something.

I have fray check, but it’s a really small bottle and if I remember about $4. That could get more expensive than I want. Good Idea tho!

Fray Block comes in a bigger tube and if you have a coupon (which JoAnn’s Fabric hands out like candy) you can get it 30 or 40% off. It goes a long way, but if you’re going to do a lot of sheets of paper, it could end up costing too much.
I wonder if you could find a solvent to dilute the caulk a bit. Preferably something non-toxic…

I had an interesting few days. I had a server go south because of a corrupted certificate. I had to change about 10 files and create 8 new certificates because the web config manager crapped out halfway through changing the domain. Because the system was non-standard I had to look all over hell’s half acre to find the config files and the correct certs to change.
I wasted a day and a half trying to build a substitute server and move over the emails.
It was very frustrating.

Shame on Congress
By Christine Todd Whitman
April 18, 2013
I was extremely disappointed to see the gun legislation voted down in the Senate on Wednesday. When 90% of Americans support a piece of legislation that is then voted down by the Congress, something in our democracy is broken. How can we stand by and let a lobbying group thwart the will of a majority of Americans? It can only happen when the majority sits back and assumes commonsense will prevail. Perhaps this will be the wake up call that people need - we cannot continue to allow our government to be controlled by a few. We must start to demand policy over politics and the only way to do that is to show up at the polls.
I agree wholeheartedly with what Gabrielle Giffords bravely wrote in the New York Times on Wednesday. May people heed her call and show our representatives that we will not stand idly by while they worry more about re-election than protecting our children.

Whitman added that her parents met at the 1931 Republican National Convention, and her father described the Republican Party he belonged to as like an umbrella, covering lots of different people. She hopes for a return to those days, a move away from what she sees as a hyper-partisan political climate where every candidate’s position on every issue “has to be all or nothing.”

Ted Cruz pushes for flat tax but wants to abolish the IRS
Cruz insisted that taking “the bureaucrats” out of Washington and the process of collecting taxes would curtain abuses of power by the IRS.
Cruz did not mention what agency will take the place of the IRS when collecting these tax revenues, nor did he allow for the fact that creating a single tax rate on every dollar earned would go even further toward increasing income inequality in the U.S. by lowering taxes on the wealthy and raising them on the poor and middle class.
Bolling, for his part, said that he thinks this is “a fantastic idea.”

no fabric.
The one I am working on now is a little photo book. I did the coptic binding (stitching) and am trying to figure out how I want the cover/boards, spine and endsheets to look.
I’ve covered the boards with a cardstock-turned-to-leather-look technique and am working on the spine/paste/tape thingy part.
I want to make a lot of little books—each from the various types of bookbinding.
I’ve done a couple, but already gave them away, so I don’t have pictures to show.

It’s not even a significant simplification in theory. 99 point repeater nine percent of the complexity of the tax code is defining what is and is not taxable income.
Progressive marginal tax rates are trivially simple, and necessary in principle.

Oh OK, where the hell did I get fabric from? LOL. The kid and I did little books, journals, many, many years ago and we used rice paper that had flowers embedded in it and homemade paper for the covers. We sealed them with a spray on sealer of some kind, but I don’t remember what it was called. The paper was stuck to heavy card stock with spray adhesive. Gack, I tasted that stuff for days afterwards, icky.

I just remembered something from back in the olden days when I worked in a book bindery (I was a typesetter for stamping titles and Dewey Decimal System numbers on the spines). The people who worked at the end of the line used something soft and squishy like rubber cement between the back of the sewn pages and the spine of the cover. Then the end pages were glued to the inside of the covers.

they have various pastes in bookbinding. There are some recipes on the web—most involve flour and such. I’m happy with the acid-free memory book stuff —basically Elmers
It’s the cover and certain papers I don’t want to tear or get water soaked. I thought the silicone idea seemed like a good one.
Have some experimenting to do tonite. I’ll report back.

Actually, it might have been rubber cement. I’ve seen some old books with what looks like the remnants of rubber cement on the parts that have come apart. We used to use it in art class in college and at high school yearbook seminars. I remember it not lasting forever and leaving a rather distinctive stain.

Luckily, most scientists use macs so this is actually limited to the flashdrives and the production machines, and they’re working through it now. Should be okay.
One of the best anti-virus setups is to have personal macs with PC specialist computers. Or vice versa. And no Java.

It probably was. I seem to remember that it needed to be very flexible on the back pages. I’m thinking the back of the pages were not directly attached to the inside of the spine of the cover. There might have been some sort of thin loosely woven fabric (like gauze) attached to the rubber cement stuff on the back of the pages. This was back in the very early 1970s, so my memory is not not all that great…
