Chuck C. Johnson Sneaks Onto Twitter Again, Using an Account Claiming to Be Associated With the Reagan Foundation

The return of a nasty troll
Weird • Views: 86,017

Yesterday I got a tip from a friend that cyberstalker Chuck C. Johnson had bragged on his private Facebook page that he now has “access” to a Twitter account with 23,000 followers. A screenshot:

As you may recall, Chuck C. Johnson was recently permanently banned from Twitter, and tried to re-register several accounts, all of which were immediately suspended as well.

Well, he’s back again. Lo and behold — here’s a Twitter account with 23,000 followers that has suddenly started tweeting about the same sorts of things that interest Chuck Johnson, including attacking Deray McKesson and tweeting links to white supremacists and VDARE.

If you look through this person’s timeline you’ll see many of the same obsessions for which Johnson is infamous; for example, here are two tweets to white supremacist “weev” (Andrew Auernheimer):

@RonReaganLives also recently started following Andrew Auernheimer (@rabite) on Twitter. Auernheimer has publicly acknowledged collaborating with Johnson, and currently has this image for his avatar:

Here’s a tweet suggesting that Obama didn’t write his autobiography — another conspiracy theory often floated by our boy Chuck:

And here’s a tweet that actually links to Chuck Johnson’s horrible blog, to a post in which you’ll find several tweets by… @RonReaganLives.

This account claims to be officially affiliated with the Ronald Reagan Foundation in Simi Valley, with a board of trustees that includes Rupert Murdoch, Peggy Noonan, Nancy Reagan, and many other well-known conservative figures.

I wonder how they feel about their name being used by someone who retweets links to outright white nationalist websites, and holds conversations with outright white supremacists — all in violation of Twitter’s Terms of Service?

(Note: I’ve saved screenshots of all these tweets and more, in case they suddenly get deleted.)

UPDATE at 7/13/15 7:01:43 pm by Charles Johnson

And sure enough — whoever’s running this account just deleted the tweet about Deray McKesson posted above.

But here’s the screenshot, because the Internet never forgets:

UPDATE at 7/13/15 7:28:48 pm by Charles Johnson

An anonymous source has now confirmed that Chuck is “definitely” using this account.

You aren’t that clever. In fact it is a word never to be associated with you.

It’s not affiliated with the Reagan Foundation-they managed to figure out how to hijack count. If you go to the website it isn’t the the same name. Their Twitter account is @ronaldregan40.

This is outright fraud.

Assuming it is CCJ, I can’t think of a better way to come full circle on Regan’s legacy regarding the GOP. He started courting these mouthbreathers in earnest 35 years ago. And now we have Trump and CCJ.

Sad story from Philadelphia. Two guys were drag racing and one of them killed a mother and three children crossing the street. Trial just concluded and the driver of the car was convicted of four counts of third degree murder. Tragedy all around for both families. If you read the comments, you would think it was the mother’s fault for crossing the street EDIT and having children with different last names. Guess what race the driver is and guess what race the family is.

Since I don’t think he wears an industrial strength orthopedic corset, that leaves bulletproof vest as the only other option I can think of. The question is, why he would wear a bulletproof vest to announce for the presidential race. Is he going to wear one for the next year and a half? Is he just playing dress-up? Inquiring minds want to know.

From the Adam Carolla interview. I superimposed a troll face over CCJ’s for my site.

If you watch Chuck’s interviews with his associate Peter Duke and with Milo, his behavior is very different from how he behaved on camera with Adam and Jason whatever his name is. When he’s in his home office, Chuck is almost manic, but in an outside studio he’s much more subdued. But I noticed he still has some tells when he says stuff that’s debatable or untruthful. For example, he tends to scratch his face or nose.

He boasts he made money in college playing poker. I don’t see how.

I think Chuck must have bought @RonReaganLives from someone. The google cache shows about 1200 tweets from before July 1, but they are all gone now - looks like a bunch of Townhall retweets. I can only see one page:

webcache.googleusercontent.com

I think this going to be Chuck’s way of maintaining a presence on Twitter - get an account, tweet for awhile, then obviously out himself so he gets kicked off. Every time Twitter bans him he gets a news bump.

He has no desire to tweet anonymously - doesn’t feed his ego.

Yeah, he’s definitely suffered. But he’s taken it to such an extreme that it’s rather bad news. A question for any astronomer types here: Do you know of a good software application that allows me to say I’m in Rockwall, TX (or the lat and long coordinates) and put in a date and time and it shows me what I should see in the sky?

Well, I’m off to bed. Here’s a video that a buddy of mine shot this weekend on the Aeolus shipwreck off the NC Coast. I’m starting it about 2 minutes in, where you see the first of several sand tiger sharks. This is the trip the dive club did this weekend, and I REALLY wish I had made it. They are at about 100 foot depth or so, sitting inside the ship (part of the hull is missing on the side)

re: #90 KingKenrod

Interesting. The profile description was different too and the tone has definitely changed since June. I ran the handle through AllMyTweets and it only went back as far as July 3, so something definitely seems to have happened between the last cached version (May 31 - June 22 with 1,206 tweets), and the current tweets (July 3 - Today with 219 221 tweets).

So 1200 tweets in a 4 - 4.5 year time span (sometime in 2011 - June 2015), then 221 in a 10-day time span (from July 3 - July 13). That’s a sudden increase from less than 1 per day to more than 20 per day.

I hope Twitter is looking into the odd activity change.

I remember briefly getting banned by Stinky for saying that “Glenn Beck should be flogged in public,” something to that effect, and I exchanged a couple of emails with Charles and I was let back in. I can recall during that very brief time I could still see articles and read comments.

Charles has this shit down to a science, people. And he brought the joint back from the brink. I was scrolling through a thread from Dec. 2008 about creationism and there were a lot of loons and nutballs saying crazy stuff about a lot of things.

Virtual Private Network. It reroutes your network traffic through another IP address or IP addresses. I use one to get around the Great Firewall of China, so I can access Twitter, Facebook, etc. VPNs can also conceal your actual IP address for security reasons.

The War TARDIS  Jul 13, 2015 • 10:15:38pm

What is so fascinating about Pluto and Charon, as we get closer, is the contrast.

Pluto is a dwarf planet that has far fewer craters than one would expect, and it is very, very contrastive in colorm being mostly an orange-ish to red-ish color. However, there are vast areas that are White in Color, and large areas of it are quite dark to black. It even looks like it is gradually erasing its craters.

Contrast this to Charon. Deader than a Door-Nail, like our moon. Covered in craters, and with at least 2 massive Canyons. And virtually no color to it, just a dark grey, with black polar feature.

I can live with the fact it is a dwarf planet, if only for the fact that the IAU’s definition of a planet may come back to bite it in the ass.

re: #180 austin_blue

Oh, goddammit, now you are using an entirely obscure acronym to fuck with the old fart. What the hell is a VPN?

Heh. It’s basically an encrypted tunnel that allows you to access the web/internet through another network. It’s like what you would do if you were working from home and needed to access your company’s private network—they usually have some kind of VPN appliance that provides the tunnel where you can log in. (Addendum: So if you logged on to LGF while you were using your employer’s network, the LGF logs would show their IP address instead of your home IP.)

A VPN device can run anywhere from a couple of hundred dollars for a personal one, up into the thousands of dollars for corporate enterprise systems.

Officially, VPNs are illegal in China, yet they are widely used in the commercial world. Businesses need access to Bloomberg, Google/GMail, Facebook and Twitter for obvious reasons. As long as I use it for largely mundane purposes, I’ll be safe.

It’s called self-censorship in some quarters. Even foreign news correspondents and authors are circumspect about what they say online, so their visas don’t get revoked.

I don’t think size is the main consideration. If Ceres were alone in the asteroid belt, we wouldn’t hesitate to call it a planet, even though it’s <600 miles in diameter.

There should be a name for a body that cleared its sector of the protoplanetary nebula and absorbed all the planetesimals that it could. Historically, that word is “planet”.

Pluto is only the largest (maybe) of many similar bodies in the Kuiper belt. “major planet” and “minor planet” would be OK, but unfortunately “minor planet” has been used as a synonym for “asteroid” for too long.

Planets (and comets) have been known since antiquity. The first asteroid (Ceres) was only discovered in 1801*, the first Kuiper Belt Object (Pluto) in 1930. I think it’s a lot more interesting to be the first of a whole new class of object like Ceres and Pluto than to be just another planet.

*Edited to change 1800 to 1801—early morning, January 1, 1801, the first day of the 19th century.

Segue:
Pluto was discovered in 1930, four years before Holst’s death, and was hailed by astronomers as the ninth planet. Holst, however, expressed no interest in writing a movement for the new planet. He had become disillusioned by the popularity of the suite, believing that it took too much attention away from his other works.[27]

In the March 1972 final broadcast of his Young People’s Concerts series, conductor Leonard Bernstein led the New York Philharmonic through a fairly straight interpretation of the suite, though Bernstein discarded the Saturn movement because he thought the theme of old age was irrelevant to a concert for children. The broadcast concluded with an improvised performance he called “Pluto, the Unpredictable.”

I guess we’ll need lots of popcorn:

A PARTY DIVIDED

Republicans for a generation have followed a reliable blueprint in choosing their White House nominees. In a crowded primary, as conservative candidates split votes, a single right-of-center contender—deemed “most electable” by the GOP elite—consolidates the support of moderates and, with the establishment’s blessing and tactical aid, tallies enough delegates to secure the nomination.

Crumple up that blueprint and throw it away. Ahead of the 2016 election, according to a National Journal survey, the Republican establishment is divided every which way.

We put three questions to the Republican National Committee’s 100 committeemen and women representing the 50 states: Whom would you vote for today? Who do you think is most likely to win the nomination? And who would be the best candidate to take on Hillary Clinton? In interviews with more than 50 of them, opinions on the 2016 field revealed a jarring lack of consensus among the party’s ruling class.

Their answers show that no one candidate is poised to monopolize the structural and institutional support that has sustained every recent Republican nominee. […]

Eventually “the establishment” GOP of one generation dies off, and it is replaced with… ?

It’s pretty clear from all the sources around us that the GOP now is the party of reactionary populism. It’s gone a nearly full 180 degrees from it’s founding of progressive populism.

I for one do not think Hillary is a shoe-in. I can see some populist (or pretending to be one) GOP candidate winning, though that would take a lot of coordination from currently competing groups (like Rand Pauls’ glibertarians supporting a neo-victorian Cruz/Scott combo.)

I am so proud. I used to live at the base of Mars Hill in Flagstaff Arizona, where the Lowerll Observatory is located, the place where Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto.

The observatory was built by Percival Lowell to discover the “canals” of Mars, a misconception based on a mistranslation of an Italian astronomer’s report of having observed canali (channels) on Mars.

Percy was convinced they were made by Martian and spent a big chunk of his family fortune building the observatory where his remains are now buried.

If real-world demands were no issue, I would have studied to be an astronomer in time to join its golden age. (Only took one course, back when the Einstein-De Sitter model was hot shit.) Instead I went for the big-money business of Anthropology.

He also wanted to find “Planet X”, calculated to be out there from analysis of the residuals in the orbits of Uranus and Neptune, the same way Neptune itself was discovered. Tombaugh—just a high-school kid, really*—found Pluto, but it gradually became obvious it wasn’t large enough to explain the residuals.

People went a little crazy—theorizing that it was made out of condensed matter, or something. It wasn’t until 10 years after Voyager’s flyby of Neptune that somebody thought to put the new, more accurate masses for both Uranus and Neptune that Voyager measured into the equations, and lo and behold, the residuals essentially disappeared. (Zero is well within the error bars.)

*When he finally got to college and signed up for Introductory Astronomy, the professor wouldn’t let him take it. He said it was inconceivable for a planet discoverer to take Astronomy 101!

Well, the fortunate thing for us is that the Republicans don’t have to succeed in killing a bill to approve the deal, but instead have to get veto-proof majorities in both houses to support a bill rejecting the deal. So all the President has to do is keep enough Democrats on his side to deny Republicans those majorities.

What an idiot. Anybody who thinks you can keep someone from acquiring 70-year-old technology any other way than by getting them to agree not to develop it is a moron. Of course you could “Bomb them back into the Stone Age”. That worked so well with Viet Nam.

I personally see the current situation, with only Israel in the region possessing nuclear weapons as unstable. We managed to get through the last 70 years without WW III because neither of the superpowers had a monopoly. If the US had continued to be the only one with nuclear weapons, we would have used them. I don’t trust the Israelis not to do the same.

Seriously, though, look at the quality of the people at each end of our political spectrum. How these pygmies and trolls in the GOP keep getting elected to anything—SMH.

Carlin explained it nicely.

Now, there’s one thing you might have noticed I don’t complain about: politicians. Everybody complains about politicians. Everybody says they suck. Well, where do people think these politicians come from? They don’t fall out of the sky. They don’t pass through a membrane from another reality. They come from American parents and American families, American homes, American schools, American churches, American businesses and American universities, and they are elected by American citizens. This is the best we can do folks. This is what we have to offer. It’s what our system produces: Garbage in, garbage out. If you have selfish, ignorant citizens, you’re going to get selfish, ignorant leaders. Term limits ain’t going to do any good; you’re just going to end up with a brand new bunch of selfish, ignorant Americans. So, maybe, maybe, maybe, it’s not the politicians who suck. Maybe something else sucks around here… like, the public. Yeah, the public sucks. There’s a nice campaign slogan for somebody: “The Public Sucks. Fuck Hope.”

292
lawhawk  Jul 14, 2015 • 5:42:59am

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. There’s an Iran deal to sort through, and I’ve yet to read the full text to know what it states, and I’m sure lots of people who are busy punditing and tweeting their opinions have read through it all before pronouncing it the worst deal in the world.

Of course, the Venn diagram of those who oppose this deal, but supported Reagan when he was dealing arms to Iran in exchange for hostages just a few years after Tehran invaded US territory and held US embassy workers hostage for 440 days has some serious overlap.

A similar Venn diagram could be done showing the overlap between those who hate this deal but were part of the Bush administration that allowed both North Korea and Iran to advance their nuclear programs - which in North Korea’s case included the ability to detonate rudimentary nuclear weapons.

Much of the complaint is positional - if Obama’s for it, they’re against it.

A better reading on whether the deal makes sense would be the reaction not from Israel, but from Saudi Arabia. They’re in the crosshairs of a nuclear Iran, and if they’re cautiously optimistic or are more reserved in their complaints (if any), then you’ve got your signal that this is a good deal.

I know that Israel’s Netenyahu’s going to complain about the deal - and that’s even without knowing what the contents are. Part of that is positional too - part of Netenyahu’s longstanding critique/worldview of the Middle East is the Iranian bogeyman. If that isn’t there, then Israel has to deal with a different realpolitik and one that Netenyahu doesn’t want to address.

Does it resolve everything? I don’t know - and without a full reading, no one knows.

Can Iran break the deal and go nuclear? Yes - but they were in that position before too.

I guess my position on the deal would be cautious pessimism. I don’t know if the deal will keep Iran from going nuclear, but Iran was long on that path to begin with. It might delay that day, but it will eventually happen. What happens between now and then is up to the parties.

And also…

While some see Walker’s lack of a college degree as a liability—he left Marquette University to start a career before he graduated…

Didn’t he leave college to go into politics? Why yes

…graduated from Delavan-Darien High School in 1986.

In 1986, Walker worked as a volunteer for Tommy Thompson’s gubernatorial campaign, and in the fall of that year, enrolled at Marquette University.

In 1988, he ran for student government president. (Ed: He lost.)

…discontinued his studies at Marquette in the spring of 1990. He left in good standing with, according to his campaign, a 2.6/4.0 (!!) grade point average but without obtaining a degree.

In 1990, at age 22, Walker ran for Milwaukee’s 7th District seat in the Wisconsin State Assembly.

Walker began his political career in the Wisconsin State Assembly, serving from 1993-2002. After the 2002 resignation of Tom Ament as Executive of Milwaukee County, Walker won the special election to fill the seat, which he held from 2002 to 2010.

Per Walker…

Walker has said he dropped out of college when he received an offer for a full-time job with the American Red Cross; he had worked part-time in college for IBM selling warranties on mainframe computers, which led to the American Red Cross position.

Must be nice to work for maybe a year or two in the private sector. You learn so much as a kid about business. ///

It sounds like he did some good stuff in college politics (rooting out some corruption). It’s a shame he became it.

Today is a big day in big science. NASA’s New Horizons is capturing stunning photos and data about Pluto as it makes its closest approach.

And now comes word from CERN that the LHC has found a new particle and way to aggregate particles.

Today, the LHCb experiment at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider has reported the discovery of a class of particles known as pentaquarks. The collaboration has submitted a paper reporting these findings to the journal Physical Review Letters.

“The pentaquark is not just any new particle,” said LHCb spokesperson Guy Wilkinson. “It represents a way to aggregate quarks, namely the fundamental constituents of ordinary protons and neutrons, in a pattern that has never been observed before in over fifty years of experimental searches. Studying its properties may allow us to understand better how ordinary matter, the protons and neutrons from which we’re all made, is constituted.”

Our understanding of the structure of matter was revolutionized in 1964 when American physicist, Murray Gell-Mann, proposed that a category of particles known as baryons, which includes protons and neutrons, are comprised of three fractionally charged objects called quarks, and that another category, mesons, are formed of quark-antiquark pairs. Gell-Mann was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics for this work in 1969. This quark model also allows the existence of other quark composite states, such as pentaquarks composed of four quarks and an antiquark. Until now, however, no conclusive evidence for pentaquarks had been seen.

The US has had the ability to do big science reduced because Congress has cut funding consistently, and shortchanges research, which goes to fundamental questions and scientific exploration.

The GOP would continue to accelerate the decline in funding. That would have negative consequences for the American economy and runs counter to their “Make America Great Again” BS (which is BS on more levels than I care to count).

I know I’d go mad expecting consistency from English or English speakers, but dropping the H from historic just sounds funny to my ears, especially from an American English speaker.

re: #346 Fourth Football of the Apocalypse

I want to be debt free as much as the next guy, but debt helps me obtain a habitable abode (a home), pays for some expenses when I don’t have cash on hand - like paying for home improvements, and then spreading those payments over time.

It also can pay for medical expenses when cash isn’t available.

We have decided as a nation that certain kinds of debt are good to have and cultivate - home mortgages for one (we have a deduction on income taxes for it), and businesses can depreciate all kinds of purchases - often taken on credit.

The problem that too many people have is that they don’t maintain a realistic cash-flow and make purchases well beyond what they’re capable of repaying. It includes buying homes beyond their means or vehicles that they don’t need or can’t afford.

But to claim that everyone should pay for a vehicle out of cash is just silly.

Not everyone can do that or afford to do it. Nor should they all do it even if they could.

I’d love to not have a car payment, but I prefer to drive a reliable, newer vehicle, and 0.9% interest is about as close to free money as I’m likely to get in this economy. (Never could figure out why gas engines qualified for 0% interest, but VW could only give me 0.9% on my diesel… whatever, I’m making up the difference in fuel savings.)

I can see the appeal of paying only cash for cars, but not using credit available to you is just silly, and the rhetoric of “driving a car payment” is doubly so.

Cars will ALWAYS depreciate in value. It’s never to be treated as a potential investment as real estate.

Tell that to the person who bought a used ‘65 Porsche 911 ten years ago, or the person whose 21-window VW bus is now worth $100K. Cons are just in love with absolutes like “always,” and “never.” I kind of like those words myself. As in, “Conservatives are always wrong and they never tell the truth.” Yeah, that works.

Don’t think it makes much sense to pay cash for a new car. Unless you’ve got a zillion dollars in cash on hand. As you say, car loans are not usually of the high interest variety. And depleting one’s cash on hand just for bragging privileges to say “I paid all the cash for my car, lazy moochers” is just silly. Better to keep the cash for emergencies, if you have it.

My impression is that the British don’t consider an initial “h” a consonant. They try their best to pronounce it where it belongs—don’t want to sound like a Cockney, donchaknow?—but I think it’s dropped out of the running as a real consonant that triggers the “n”. I could be wrnog, of course.

Today is a big day in big science. NASA’s New Horizons is capturing stunning photos and data about Pluto as it makes its closest approach.

And now comes word from CERN that the LHC has found a new particle and way to aggregate particles.

I have a decade old Subaru that just sucked up about $4,000 in repairs. Timing belt, brake work, and getting a door replaced due to a massive dent. The last in part because letting the dent rust would be stupid with the expectation of using the car for at least another year or two.

But I have non-standard usage since I have a walking commute. Car is used for weekend jaunts and the various driving vacations in the eastern part of the US. From a straight monetary standpoint I’d probably be better off dumping the car entirely and just use ZipCar or something like that given insurance and parking fees. But having the vehicle available and close saves time and the effort it would take dealing with a car service a couple of times a week. In addition to having a car model that I know can handle snow conditions.

The ‘68 was a camper-van, but not the model with the pop-up roof. They were slow to accelerate, but could buzz along at top speed (70 mph with a tail wind) for hours. Heating in winter was touch-and-go. When the ‘68 went to the body shop after a fender bender, Dad got a ‘72 Beetle loaner. It felt like we had moved up to limousine class. Haha!

re: #386 Feline Fearless Leader

I have a similar situation - just bought a new car outright. Old car became a sponge for repairs and it was in need of major repairs - electrical system had a short causing the battery to repeatedly die, timing belt needed replacement, and brakes were a mess. Had set aside money (from stock purchases) to buy new car.

Didn’t want loan, even though I was getting offers for 0.9% or 1.9%. Yeah, I know opportunity costs of doing that would suggest this wasn’t the smart take, but I needed to reduce exposure to certain stocks and this was an excuse to do that.

But in order to have credit to buy stuff (or own a credit card), you need to have debt and show ability to repay. It’s basic personal finance. Crowder seems to have failed that abysmally.

I get the need to maintain a solid income stream and minimizing debt, but there is some debt that is considered good - mortgages for one.

Personal debt, like say from medical expenses, is bad, when it exceeds your ability to repay. That’s a big problem for all too many Americans.

They say, “Well Blue Cross terminated your coverage on 12/31/14” So due to some processing error, my wife and I have been uninsured for the last seven months. And we sent in the forms last fall saying we didn’t want to make any changes to our plan.

So we get to take care of that today.

Since we’re on the subject of cars, one of my former students (2009 grad) took me to dinner in her 2014 BMW 5 series. She saved money for the DP and financed the rest — 430,000 RMB or about $70K total cost. That is one sweet car!

Her family owns several clothing shops here, selling the Lilanz menswear line from Taiwan. Her dad is retired from the post office, but her mom is still active with the shops.

All the worse because he actually states that he can get a 10% rate of return on his money. Math, how does it work?

I remember that ‘American Pickers’ guy getting all excited about a horribly rusted version sitting in a junkyard. The guy who had it refused to sell it.

Yeah!

I’m familiar with them as an uncle of mine had a 21 window back in the very early 60s and they’d pack their rather large family in it and go all over Ohio. It was a very unique time to own a foreign vehicle, but my uncle could have cared less what others thought about anything.

A good friend of mine had a panel version with only side door windows, front split window with the cool metal visor and the rear door windows. We made a rack on it to hold out 14’ fishing boat which looked real cool upside down on top and running the full length of the van…like it was designed to be that way. I think it was a ‘63 and he had a rebuilt engine in it and ran it almost the entire 80s before selling it.

Yes, this is an original BINZ WAGON. Hammered goat shit it is.

We all know you are going to harvest the parts to transplant on a decent 4 door of the same vintage or year.

I’ve contacted BINZ with no results on a build sheet or data spec sheet relate to this fin and ID tag.

So transplanting it to a donor would be as the coach builder did back in the day.

This is located in crawfordville, Florida. You drag it out, and haul it away.
Or…you can pay the folks at the yard $350 extra to pull it out and cut whatever parts you want. Why? Because there are fuken snakes, spiders, thorns, and Ebola carrying rats down there that sh!t tetanus.

No more pictures. The motor is there, the hood, doors, and a pile of BS some meth heads started to strip for metal. 4 cents a pound…now that’s a crack driven midnight run.

No title. If you want one, it’ll be $300 extra.

Will I ship? Yeah, but it won’t be cheap.

We pay cash for our cars. We tend to keep them for a long time and early on got in the habit of after they were paid off, putting away what would have been spending on the payment in the bank. By the time we needed a new one, voila, the money was there. Doesn’t work for everyone, but I like having it bought and done with.
That said, there are worse kinds of debt than car loans.

Of course it would be great for each American if he paid only cash, salted away lots of savings, and never borrowed money to buy anything. Provided, of course, that everyone else keeps borrowing money to buy things. Otherwise there will be massive unemployment. Anyone remember the winter of 2008-2009? Nobody borrowing? Everyone paying only cash and buying only what they could afford?

The problem with Conservatives is that they make economic theory out of Puritan moralism - but only for the common man.

I once had a Conservative tell me that if everyone only bought what they could afford, paid cash, and saved their money, the economy would BOOM! I asked him how. He didn’t really have an answer. Her husband once used a fairly vile racial slur to describe an African-American door-to-door salesman, so I’ll leave you to ponder what she meant by “people”.

Every time I point out that the banks were under no obligation to give a loan to someone who they probably knew couldn’t afford it? Literally ignores what I said and keeps on going with her original beef.

This is why I have such a hard time dealing with conservatives anymore. They are just so willing to go right to poor bashing while ignoring predatory behavior from banks and other corporations.

A Cranky One  Jul 14, 2015 • 8:49:45am

When the economy is based on consumer spending, the consumers need to have money to spend to keep the economy moving. When the majority of people don’t have any disposable income, the economy stagnates and limps along.

The Republicans keep pushing voodoo economics where the rich will “create jerbs” if their taxes are kept low. But without demand for products, what jobs will be created? Why would the rich invest in businesses when there is no return on investment? If no one can afford to purchase the products there is no economic incentive to make the products.

Thus the Republican lie is exposed. Without a healthy middle class with some disposable income, there is no economic growth, period. If income inequality continues to increase at its current pace, soon there will be no one to buy any products other than the most basic of necessities. And the economy will collapse.

So obviously the big problem with the country is the poor who bought things they can’t afford. /////////////

By the time we needed a new one, voila, the money was there. Doesn’t work for everyone, but I like having it bought and done with.
That said, there are worse kinds of debt than car loans.

I did that with my Saturn. For the Subaru the dealership offered a 1% interest deal after a down payment of 50% of the cost. Since my bank accounts were pulling 2.5% interest at the time I took the financing deal and paid off the balance over the next two years. And have been putting aside the equivalent of a car payment for the past 6-7 years as savings for the next car. (Which also supplied the emergency nest egg I could hit for the recent repairs.)

A Florida lawmaker suggested that Donald Trump’s bombastic presidential campaign may be a Democratic plot to make the Republican Party look bad.

Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-Miami) posted a tweet last week in Spanish that echoed speculative comments he made to popular radio host Ahora Oscar Haza, reported the Miami Herald.

re: #463 Feline Fearless Leader

I put 110K miles on the Saturn I had previous to the Subaru. Tendency in my family is to buy new and then drive the car for over a decade. I think my brother managed 200+k miles on a VW Jetta.

That’s what I do.

I had a ‘92 Golf (modified after paid off) and kept it until 2007 as my weekend drive fun car. It was still clean and in great shape when I sold it to a guy that really wanted it. It had 189,000 miles on it.

The ‘99 GTi I drove until it was time to do a ton of work on it. It was a great car. Only thing I ever had to fix was a bad cat converter (they had issues on the Mark 4 early cats) and a crank position sensor. 1 brake job and that was it. It had 181,000 miles on it and was clean enough and in decent shape they gave me $2700 trade for the ‘08 Rabbit I have.

I don’t drive as much as I used to so the ‘08 only has 72,000 miles on it. It looks brand new and I suspect I will be keeping it for a long time.

You know what else is interesting. If you read Consumer Reports VWs are the last car to buy. I’ve had amazing luck with them and I love them because they really are a fun car to drive and there are always tons of fun mods you can buy and make them into great little sports cars. I also do all the regular oil changes and other upkeep.

I’ve learned not to trust Consumer Reports on cars. I’ve also had some car people explain to me why the Japanese cars get all those rave reviews. The owner may never have noticed that slight starting problem or that little wisp of smoke coming out when you started was taken care of with an entire new head at your last service!

Speaking of Trump:
Forbes: Trump Exaggerating His Net Worth (By 100%) In Presidential Bid

Campaign exaggerations are as much a part of politics as kissing babies. In announcing his bid for the Republican presidential nomination this morning, Donald Trump started with what Forbes believes is a whopper. He claimed his net worth was nearly $9 billion. We figure it’s closer to $4 billion — $4.1 billion to be exact.

This discrepancy is noteworthy, since Trump’s financial success - he put his fortune at exactly $8,737,540,000 — is core to his candidacy. “I’m proud of my net worth. I’ve done an amazing job,” said Trump at his circus-like announcement, before referencing his autobiography. “We need a leader that wrote ‘The Art of the Deal.”

Supply based economy.

‘Build it, they will buy.’

It works but only in unusual circumstances like the iPhone. For some reason that unusual circumstance has been extrapolated to everything. It doesn’t strike them that there is a mix of innovative high demand items that will drive purchases and a much larger proportion of general stuff that will not drive purchases but is driven instead by demand.

The unique stuff stands out, but the mundane stuff drives economies.

That’s the truly scary part. People actually believe the nonsense.

I have a cousin who worked as a vice president for a number of large corporations, making ridiculous money. Had to listen to this type of nonsense from him as well. Funny part was that his specialty was slashing the workforce to reduce costs. He’s move from one company to the next, leading layoffs at each new company.

Funny part? He now finds himself unemployable, because companies won’t hire him due to his reputation; employees view his hiring as a prelude to layoffs and morale tumbles. So his reputation has now made him poison to many companies.

I must confess that hearing him bitch and moan about his current status makes me chuckle. Poor baby.

18 year old Honda with 119K here. The air died and it’s rattling a little bit, but still runs. My car repair bills are still much cheaper than new monthly payments and the higher insurance.

Added bonus: it’s a stick. I get 32 MPG local.

In the mid-80s, I bought a ‘64 Volvo 122 that had three 100K badges on the grille. I put another 30K on it before I sold it for more than I paid.

What a great car. The only problem I ever had with it was the motor oil tended to turn to syrup in Winter, so I had to get a heated dipstick so it would start in the morning. But talk about easy maintenance - so easy to work on that engine. It looked like this - great car.

Greed is a powerful force, it can drive an economy, but it must be contained. That’s why we have internal combustion engines and do not just go setting everything on fire. That’s why we build dams and canals and don’t just go flooding the landscape.

As well as his claims about his personal wealth. Which is why I don’t believe for a minute that he’ll actually file the required financial disclosure forms to run for President. He bragged about his personal wealth during his announcement; filing paperwork that tells his true wealth would make it clear that he started his campaigns with outright lies. Not that the fact will bother many Republicans, but it will cause even more damage to his brand.

And it’s “other” poor since the blaming is part of the perceived superiority they hold. Basically someone who has fallen for the race war analogy while failing to spot the actual class war that is really occurring. And they make such good foot soldiers.

We were bombed, invaded, destroyed. Our market economy eviscerated. Record unemployment. Hard to imagine a more concise, thoughtful piece of analysis then that provided by Ben, although somehow despite all the death and destruction and market mayhem has managed to keep talking.

So we are now Europe in 1946?

I see the call for displaced person camps already going out.

Kind of interesting to read (in Being Nixon by Evan Thomas) that Haldeman and Ehrlichman were Scientologists, as was the sap they put in nominal charge of the Plumbers committee, Egil Krogh.

Doesn’t this rumor circulate about every six months or so? In another version of this PP burns the baby bits out in the back yard.

Considering that both the Republicans and the Scientologists have a vested interest in stamping out mental health I’m unsurprised.

That is what scares me about the GOP, their second tier of candidates/officeholders is even zanier than the one we are familiar with.

Here is a pleasant surprise; in the latest polls, opposition to Obamacare has dropped below fifty percent, and support is pretty much even with opposition. The GOP is rapidly running out of issues to run on in the general election.

That’s great news. Wonder how Republicans will react when the support for the ACA is greater than its opposition. Republicans can’t even run on homophobia anymore. What’s left for them?

I’d like to think that most economists would tell you that there’s no such thing as a greed-based economy.

I’d like to think that. I’m probably wrong.

They do tell you that. They just call it ‘rational’ instead ‘greed’.

I call such people ‘hitmen’.

He probably, like most management these days, calls himself a capitalist. It is the most common delusion in that section of our culture and responsible for much of their behaviour. If it’s ‘capitalism’ it’s good so they have an excuse for any unethical or harmful behaviour.
