From the last thread.

Lots of Bernie ableists and rodent copulators on the Scarborough thread as well.

Why do so many Sanders supporters hate the disabled?

Just checked my voicemail and my cardiologist’s office left a message asking me to reschedule my appointment for next Tuesday. My hypertension is extremely well controlled and they’re working hard to clear all non-urgent visits off the books in advance of what’s coming.

The Washington results show the disadvantage of mail voting with over 10% of the vote going to Bloomberg, even though he’s out of the race.

That said, it’s a lot harder to suppress the vote with mail ballots.

Gov. Inslee to restrict gatherings of more than 250 people, including sports and concerts

Initially the prohibition would be imposed only in Snohomish, King and Pierce counties, according to The Herald of Everett. The largest concentrations of confirmed coronavirus cases are in King and Snohomish counties.

It’s like we’ve learned nothing from Italy.

It’s probably best to hold off mail in ballots until near voting time just to have an accurate list of candidates still running.

Stock futures show nearly half of today’s gains are being erased. One wonders how Wall Street would respond if/when COVID-19 cases were to spike exponentially.

The market has gone down, but there hasn’t been a capitulation moment. Would not be shocked if we saw a 10 to 15 percent decline in a single day, especially if hospitals began to get overwhelmed.

The Venn diagram of Bernie loyalists and hard-leftists is a circle.

A lot of “deep greens” are misanthropists who especially hate the disabled for “using up Earth’s resources”. Lots of “lifeboat captains” out there.

Disheartening. I’m as liberal as a liberal, but when disabled people try to participate, we’re ignored. Senator Warren was the first to talk to the disabled community as if we were a real constituency. We are.

There’s computer braking programs make that impossible.

Down 7% gets a 15-minute suspension, again at 13% (off the previous day’s close); then again at 20%.

What is furthermore insane is believing that people just won’t go over to the next county for whatever shindig is over 250 people.

As someone who liked Warren, my vote will go to Biden. I wanted a progressive that is most likely to get the hard work done and Warren was the sharpest tool in the shed IMHO. I’ll take Joe, he knows how to build a coalition and the potential is there, if there’s enough of a mandate to ram through some desperately needed domestic and tax policy.

re: #20 sagehen

Yes, and the brakes came in on Monday. But that would not forestall a 10-15 percent decline. A lot of Wall Street folks were expecting to hit the 13 percent brake on Monday, after hitting the 7 percent mark just four minutes into trading. At 20 percent, the market would close - unless it occurs in the last 25 minutes of trading.

That’s why I pulled out today. A couple days ago we blew through the Level 1 circuit breaker like it was fucking tissue paper, which we’re hoarding like idiots.

Also, that 2013 essay on normalcy bias in the face of unfolding disasters convinced me that not only are we dealing with massive market instability, but irrationality. In this case the irrationality is easily explained by the fact that it is literally the normal response. 70% people just mill about and react dumbly, as normal, 15% lose their shit entirely and 15% react appropriately.

In any event the public health and financial prescriptions are the same, isolation.

I’ve always taken the long view. I bought $5,000 of Dell stock in 1990. I sold it all in 1998 (oops) and rolled it all into Apple. Should have let it ride another year. I’ve let that ride since then, until January, when I got out of the market entirely and into a mix of 6M/5Y/10Y notes.

The markets will eventually calm the fuck down, but this is no time to be betting big sums.Like my great uncle Paddy Kelly (a bookmaker in Springfield, IL and who wintered in Hot Springs, AR) told me as a very young man “Boyo, don’t make book unless you can cover the bets. And always, always put your cash in US notes. This country will never go broke.”

re: #13 Yeah Sure WhatEVs

250 is fucking insane.

Yep, especially in light of this article:

A handful of small music clubs in Japan’s western city of Osaka have emerged as a major transmission ground for the coronavirus, showing the difficulty of stemming the outbreak even as authorities have focused on reining in large gatherings.

Japan has closed schools, zoos and theme parks, and drastically scaled back public events since the outbreak. The annual spring sumo tournament is being held in Osaka without spectators, leaving public broadcaster NHK to televise bouts of wrestlers facing off in an eerily quiet stadium.

Despite those steps, and the government’s urging telecommuting, there are signs that smaller crowds - including those at restaurants and tiny “live houses” where fans stand cheek by jowl to hear live music - are spreading the virus.

Japan on Tuesday reported the single-biggest number of infections in a day, of 59 cases, according to NHK.

Osaka reported its first coronavirus case on Feb 27. As of Tuesday, it had 73 cases - the third-most among Japan’s 47 prefectures, according to data from the local government. So far, 58 of those could be traced back to four small music venues, Osaka’s daily announcements show.

Many of the cases concentrated on three dates: Feb. 15, 16, and 19 - but a possible cluster-type spread wasn’t identified until early March, the data shows. Many of those infected were in their 30s and 40s and showed minimal or no symptoms.

As of Tuesday, 40 cases were linked to one venue in particular - Soap opera classics Umeda - and at least another 20 to Live House Arc. About 100 people attended each performance at the clubs.

Another 19 people outside Osaka, from as far away as Hokkaido, and Kumamoto in Kyushu, have also been traced back to those two venues as of Monday.

Push Dems left by destroying Republicans. Make them non-entities. Political pariahs.

That, inherently, pushes the nation’s politics to the left.

Dunno why progressives want to do it the hard way…

Now, this, I can understand. My first attempt at college was 1200 miles from home. This would have been a nightmare situation had it happened to me:

Most days, Jordan H. Barton ‘23 wakes up in his Canaday dorm to a 9:30 a.m. alarm.

On Tuesday, though, he woke up earlier. His phone was ringing as he began receiving a flood of texts informing him Harvard College would require undergraduates to vacate campus by Sunday to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

“To wake up in the morning and receive what can only be called an eviction notice is something that only invalidates what the school’s mission has stated since they’ve been inducted,” Barton said.

Dean of the College Rakesh Khurana wrote to Barton and more than 6,000 other undergraduates on Tuesday morning that campus would not reopen after spring break, which stretches from March 14 to 22.

Within hours, the email sent students scrambling to pack up all their belongings and make plans to vacate. But Barton and others say it hit one group of undergraduates particularly hard: first-generation and low-income students, many of whom depend upon Harvard for food, housing, and stability.

“They’ve been evicted from their stability, they’ve been evicted from their homes, they’ve been evicted from their ability to live comfortably and safely,” Barton, who is an FGLI student, said. “There’s already enough concern, and now they’re concerned about being able to get home and have stable housing and food.”

Yeah, apparently this is why NYC hasn’t considered closing the public schools, because apparently *114,000* students are considered homeless and depend on the schools for food and other needs. Closing the schools would be a last resort.

The woman in Omaha in the National Quarantine Center in critical condition right now (and spread the disease to other family members and carried out to many venues here) caught the virus in the UK.

I imagine though that pretty soon it won’t matter whether you travel or stay home you’re going to be at risk, especially since conservatives here haven’t figured out that Fed rate cuts and tax cuts don’t stop a virus yet.

From the last thread.

Lots of Bernie ableists and rodent copulators on the Scarborough thread as well.

Why do so many Sanders supporters hate the disabled?

The thing that is really frustrating to me is that this entire discussion is aggravating *my* stuttering. I had to go to a new doctor today, (for other things,) And I couldn’t get a sentence out without resorting to at least one really obvious avoidance behavior, which only occasionally worked.

And normally, to someone I don’t know that well, I don’t immediately show up as a stutterer to in most casual conversations- I’m normally pretty good at bailing out of a word or phrase I’m not going to get out easily, and I’ve cultivated enough affectations and dodges to pass as “occasionally awkward.”

Of course, that only holds for as long as I feel *normal.* Start adding stressors to that, and things can fall apart at a pretty rapid clip. And one of the biggest stressors to people who stutter is *thinking about stuttering.* And the social stigma is a HUGE part of that- especially the knowledge that so many think people who stutter are mentally deficient.

I can’t imagine how the many people who aren’t as lucky as me or don’t have good, supportive people in their life must feel about all this.

Weston hospital full to capacity due to increase in demand

On average, the hospital - which is run by Weston Area Health Trust (WAHT) - had 264 beds available to use each day last week, including three escalation beds, which are used in emergencies and periods of high demand.

Zero beds were free on an average day.

Seems like a problem waiting to happen. I wonder how many other hospitals in the UK are already tight on beds. As COVID-19 explodes in the UK, how will they handle the demand?

California mega-church cancels its ‘faith healing’ hospital visits, citing coronavirus (Sacramento Bee)

This would be the mega-church which claimed they were trying to resurrect a dead two-year old last year, were going around to hospitals and laying hands on children to “heal the sick” (without parents permission or knowledge, and try to convert them to Christianity—their version—to boot and harassed parents when they objected).

They’ve cancelled services to prevent the spread of the virus, along with mission trips to Satan controlled countries nations which probably don’t want them in the first place.

In 2006, a man who fell off a cliff in Redding filed a lawsuit against a Bethel student who thought he was dead and thus, instead of calling police, tried to faith heal him back to life and did not notify police until six hours later. That man is now paralyzed and, unfortunately, lost his lawsuit against the student.

I’m the same in conversation in that unless you knew me really well it’s not likely you’d discover I have a mild stutter. My avoidance is primarily leaning on a very large vocabulary. I was once accused of being gay because of the way I speak. I found that to be a strange association: “You know too many words, you must be gay!”

First off, I want to say that I have never been able to receive actual speech therapy for my condition, so anything I might say about this subject is in no way solid medical advice. This is all just things I’ve pieced together on my own, some of which are possibly counter productive. (You’ll see what I mean.) But I think they’re Illustrative, so, here I go:

So, vocabulary this is definitely one of the big things I rely on. Another, weirdly enough, is that I’m good banter. So if I’m coming up on something I won’t be able to get out, I’m fairly adroit at substituting a completely unrelated zany ha-ha thing that completely avoids the words at hand.

Some of the non-productive coping mechanisms? I sometimes introduce a false lisp into my speech to avoid certain consonants, or as a backwards fluency-enhancing strategy. I’ve done this to the point that during an after-school Jr. High photography program I led, one of the kids ended up defending my *lisp* rather than my stutter. Also, it’s easier for me to get things out if I’m looking away from the person I’m talking to- so I have a lot of conversations where I’m staring at a computer screen, or a sign, or some other thing while I’m talking to you.

Point being, it’s a very complicated subject, and everyone deals with it in their own way. And a lot of us feel very alone in dealing with this issue.

And this whole Biden is in mental decline thing is really not helpful.

Troubling indications that South Korea’s COVID-19 epidemic is entering a new phase:

Community spread on horizon in Seoul and surrounding areas

The South Korean government said Wednesday that it plans to distribute guidelines for densely populated workplaces where employees are especially vulnerable to the novel coronavirus, amid mounting concerns over community spread of the deadly virus in the country’s capital and surrounding cities.

The move came after at least 90 people, including 77 employees at a call center in Guro-gu and 13 people who came into contact with them, tested positive for COVID-19, making it the largest cluster of infections in Seoul so far.

For the whole of the country, 242 novel coronavirus cases and six more deaths were reported Wednesday, taking the total number of infections to 7,755 and the death toll to 60, according to data from the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

[…]

Fears about community spread grows as the transmission route remains unidentified and some of the employees at the call center began to show symptoms in late February.

One 48-year-old patient showed symptoms of infection Feb. 29 but continued her daily routine until she tested positive Tuesday. She used public transportation to go to work, visited a hospital for treatment and had after-work dinners with coworkers, according to the inspection by the health authorities.

[…]

The packed working environment at the call center, where employees sit close to each other in confined spaces and constantly talk into phones, is believed to have made it easier for the virus to spread.

[…]

Of the 242 new cases confirmed Wednesday, 52 were reported in Seoul and 12 each in Incheon and Gyeonggi Province. Most were linked to the call center in southwestern Seoul.

The call center case shows that the virus may have been spreading undetected in the country’s most populated areas and this time it may be harder to contain, experts say.

“So far, there have been hospitals and churches so the spread of the virus could be controlled to some extent,” said Kim Woo-joo, a professor of medicine at Korea University Guro Hospital who specializes in infectious disease.

“But in the case of the call center, there are many employees at the call center, they were confirmed to be infected days after they showed symptoms, which means those around them and many commuters on public transportation could have been exposed to the virus already.”

[…]

Some 80 percent of the country’s total cases have been linked to infection clusters, 69.9 percent of which can be traced to the Daegu branch of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, according to the KCDC.

The increase in cases in the country is driven by emerging clusters of infections involving medical facilities, social welfare facilities, religious facilities and workplaces, the agency said.

[…]

The number of new cases in SK had been going down before the 11th:

However, with Wednesday’s report it is clear that ability to track the infected is rapidly being lost, and this is going to cause problems.

Things you may need to know:

Study: COVID-19 Is Also Spread by Fecal-Oral Route

New research from China indicates that the novel coronavirus is also spread by fecal-oral transmission, not just by respiratory droplets or environmental contact.

Hong Shan, MD, PhD, of Fifth Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, and colleagues noted that the gastrointestinal tract is a welcoming environment for the virus, also known as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) CoV-2. “Our immunofluorescent data showed that the ACE2 protein, which has been proved to be a cell receptor for SARS-CoV-2, is abundantly expressed in the glandular cells of gastric, duodenal, and rectal epithelia, supporting the entry of SARS-CoV-2 into the host cell,” the team wrote.

Among the key findings of the study, published online in Gastroenterology:

A significant portion of coronavirus patients experience diarrhea [I guess the run on toilet-paper is justified?], nausea, vomiting, and/or abdominal discomfort before the onset of respiratory symptoms

Viral RNA is detectable in fecal samples from suspected cases, indicating that the virus sheds into the stool

Viral gastrointestinal infection and potential fecal-oral transmission can last even after viral clearance from the respiratory tract

[…]

In a second paper posted on the same day in the journal, Jinyang Gu, MD, of Xinhua Hospital of Jiao Tong University in Shanghai, and colleagues noted that evidence from the 2003 SARS epidemic also showed enteric involvement and the presence of virus in the stool of patients even after discharge from hospital. Interestingly, the team said, the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in the U.S., which occurred in Washington state, reported a 2-day history of nausea and vomiting on admission, followed by a loose bowel movement on the second day of hospitalization. The viral nucleic acids of loose stool and both respiratory specimens from this patient later tested positive.

Gu’s group also noted recent reports of mild to moderate liver injury in COVID-19 patients, including elevated aminotransferases, hypoproteinemia, and prothrombin time prolongation, while in the SARS epidemic of 2003, as many as 60% of patients had liver impairment.

People tried to warn the Berners that it was too early to write Biden’s obituary, that campaigns have made major comebacks in SC and gone on to win the nomination. But NO, they wanted to believe their own bullshit about how Bernie would either win SC or cut Biden’s victory down to a hair, before burying him in CA and TX on Super Tuesday.

cillizza does not get this wrong:

Here’s the President’s response:
“I don’t think it’s a big deal, I would do it, I don’t feel any reason — I feel extremely good.”
Trump then added that he has “no symptoms, no anything.”

What the actual hell? As anyone who has watched even five minutes of cable TV over the last few weeks knows, feeling good or even “extremely good” and showing “no symptoms, no anything,” is not evidence that you don’t have coronavirus.

…In moments of crisis like these, the country looks to its leaders — most specifically the President — to provide moral leadership.

…[if] he understood his role as a moral leader, Trump would submit to the test — modeling appropriate behavior for the public.

Sure, it would be done out of an abundance of caution, given that he almost certainly hasn’t been infected. But it would also provide leadership, destigmatizing and demystifying the idea of being tested. It would show that Trump was willing to go above and beyond prescribed conduct for the good of the American people.

The Point: Trump has never understood the moral responsibilities and imperatives of being President. And he doesn’t appear to be starting now.

I still think Wendell underscores the political misogyny that Trump benefited from. I too think Trump is at a unique disadvantage. Biden being a known quantity is to our advantage right now. IMO pair Biden with a younger VP, begin repairing the damage Trump has done and in 2024, we can have a great conversation about where we go. By the end of this decade, we’re going to have new leaders. We need to value coalition building instead of a cult of personality around one man. Biden himself gets this. He’s said he sees himself as a bridge to a new generation of leaders. It’s a pity imo that Sanders lacks this humility.

re: #8 Ace-o-aces

Article 25?

Junior’s as much a dumbass as Trump is. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Junior does the word salad nearly as bad as Trump.

It’s the 25th Amendment. It should have been applied to Trump long ago, but the GOP and Trumpists continue enabling the most incompetent, corrupt, and criminal admin in our nation’s history.

Our failed covid19 response is directly related to Trump’s refusal to act aggressively to stop it - including failing to aggressive test for cases even if it meant we had identified cases. When you identify cases, public health experts can do contact tracing and limit the spread. But if you’re not doing testing and don’t have the kits to test, you limit the ability to do all that.

Trump’s CDC sat on tests out in Seattle despite local doctors warning that we needed to test (one did so anyways and revealed an outbreak there). They’re still limiting tests to those who know they came in contact with someone who was diagnosed or traveled to China, South Korea, and Iran, but we have outbreaks in Italy and NYC metro. TSA isn’t asking people about travel to Italy or NYC or Seattle, which means domestic travelers don’t get additional screening.

Trump’s public health team is in shambles - by design and incompetence. Not having confirmed people heading agencies. Having lackeys and toadys telling Trump what he wants to hear instead of what he needs to hear.

Having Trump and GOPers get classified briefing about the potential spread of the disease that suggested 70% of US would be infected before long, and then lied about the spread and containment (which isn’t going to happen because the admin still can’t get the tests out to those needing them).

Local officials are struggling to keep up, and health experts warn of dire consequences once they reach a tipping point of community spread.

Meanwhile, Walmart announced new emergency sick leave policy after a store employee was diagnosed in Kentucky. That too points to the failure to have nationwide sick leave policies. Throw in fact that Trumpworld is saying that Medicare/Medicaid and health insurers will now cover costs for tests and not require copays belies fact that Trumpists and GOP sought to massively cut Medicare in their FY20-21 budget and are still in court looking to invalidate Obamacare, which expanded coverage of Medicaid in the states.

Everywhere you turn, Trumpists and GOPers are lying that they have things under control, when the numbers show differently. They’re continuing to prioritize big business and the markets over public health and safety, and that’s actually counterproductive as the markets gyrate between big selloffs and bargain hunters looking to pick through the wreckage.

The TV hosts were found guilty of violating the Clean Air Act.

The stars of Discovery Channel’s Diesel Brothers television show are being ordered to pay $851,451 for their role in producing and selling modified diesel pickups that wreaked environmental havoc in the state of Utah. David “Heavy D” Sparks, Joshua Stuart, Keaton Hoskins, and Dave Kiley—a.k.a. “Diesel Dave”—were the targets of a case that reached a federal judge after being initiated by Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment. It was then ruled that the defendants must pay the aforementioned dollar amount to the United States government and Davis County with additional restitution potentially on the way.

Looks like my play in toilet paper and hand soap futures is paying dividends. /half.

The markets are again in decline, and the usual pundits will associate the problem to the following:
1) ego driving the Russia-Saudi oil price war
2) lack of a stimulus plan from Trump.

Neither of those is the true underlying cause here.

It’s the failure of the US to aggressively test and contain covid19, which means that the economic affects will be far more severe. It’s a failure of leadership, and the sooner the pundits treat that as the real reason, the sooner we can begin to address the problems (and it starts and end with the enabling GOP).

Odds are he’ll walk on a technicality.

Jones had a blood alcohol level of 0.076 at 11:55 p.m. and a level of 0.079 at 11:59 p.m. The legal blood alcohol limit while driving in Texas is 0.08.

What is the Texas law between DUI and DWI?

From Wikipedia on “Drunk Driving”:

All states have a “catch-all” provision designed to cover those circumstances where the person is below 0.08%, but the person still appears impaired by definition of law. These types of “catch-all” statutes cover situations involving a person under the influence of drugs or under the combined influence of alcohol and drugs. With the advent of the legalization of marijuana, these catch-all provisions cover those prosecutions pursuing those charged with driving under the influence of drugs or even drugs and alcohol.

So perhaps he doesn’t get the major charge due to being under 0.08%, but still gets caught by the “catch-all”.

I really think he and his advisers saw how Trump took over the GOP and remade it in Trump’s image that they could do the same to the Democrats. That was a big miscalculation. I have a lot of respect for AOC because I feel she put her money where her mouth was but it wasn’t AOC types that gave the Democrats a majority in the House and it won’t be that return them to the Presidency and Senate. Progressive types or whatever they want to call themselves (I consider myself ideologically in between Biden and Bernie) need to learn about coalition building. They wanted to declare Bernie as the new FDR. They need to learn about how FDR actually built a coalition that lasted for 36 years.

Odds are he’ll walk on a technicality.

Jones had a blood alcohol level of 0.076 at 11:55 p.m. and a level of 0.079 at 11:59 p.m. The legal blood alcohol limit while driving in Texas is 0.08.

There is no “legal limit”. .08 is the presumptive/prima facie limit for driving while impaired.

Standard conservative playbook:
1) Blame foreigners.
2) Ask government for a tax cut/hand out that mainly benefits themselves.

Dunno. But if it is a particular time of day or location, cops will pull people over for the most minor moving infraction in order to test. Things like not finishing a left hand turn into the nearest lane to the center, not using the indicator, etc.

I’m using a site via John Hopkins (?). But I have noted that it is often a day or two slow reporting some things, like nothing yet noted in South Dakota, but I think I read last night that they have cases now. I also saw that after a point they just put a red dot on a state rather than smaller dots for within the state for the reported cases; e.g. PA went to a big central dot once they went past 4-5 cases in the state.

NY Auto Show, which sees more than 100k people attend daily, is postponing to the late summer. Another bunch of cases were confirmed in NYC - rising 10 to 46, and NJ saw first fatality.

My commute on NJ Transit saw 20-30% fewer people earlier this week, but today it was more like 50% fewer. That’s due to more and more companies telling people to work from home, school closures, and no amount of tax breaks will encourage people to travel.

St. Patrick’s Day parades are being cancelled across nation, but NYC hasn’t made a decision yet (expect them to cancel). NYC half marathon was cancelled.

All the headlines should include “Convicted rapist Weinstein faces sentencing…” or some similar wording. He’s not a disgraced movie mogul. He’s a convicted rapist.

The Guardian has more on this convicted rapist and the piece of work he was - including trying to get Bezos and Bloomberg to salvage his position at the film production company, attacking Jennifer Aniston in media, and red flagging people who might speak out against Weinstein’s sexual assaults and proclivities.

Rothberg, the serial entrepreneur and innovator behind next-generation, high-speed DNA sequencing and groundbreaking medical devices like a pocket-sized ultrasound wand and portable MRI machine, started brainstorming and crowdsourcing ideas for his coronavirus test on Twitter over the weekend.

He said in an interview Monday that he and his team at Homodeus, one of seven startups housed in his Guilford-based life-sciences incubator 4Catalyzer, are now “working around the clock” to develop an instant home test that is based on the genetic code of the deadly virus.

As it stands now, if WA remains razor thin, that splits the delegate count there. ND netted Bernie 2.

Bernie needs to essentially sweep the remaining delegates winning 57% of the remaining delegates.

Biden needs to get 50.1% of remaining delegates to get to 1991 first. At this rate, he’ll easily crush Bernie well before June.

It’s over.

I hope if Sanders stays in the race, at the debate he focuses on his issues and not on attacking Biden, who will be the nominee.

People haven’t been paying attention to his platform. His policy on transgender rights alone is far from a return to the status quo as you can get. Bernie just got seen as the “cool” guy because he talked a big game. Biden I’ve felt can always deliver. If you look at who the Presidents who accomplished the most progressive legislation. They weren’t people who were elected to change the world. FDR was just someone who would be an alternative to Hoover at first and LBJ was just the other guy to Goldwater’s extremism. Both of them and LBJ especially though were very smart at understanding the times and systems they were working within. I’ve been trying to tell people that if they want something closer to what Sanders’ talks about, you need to build up strong majorities in your legislatures.

Seasonal flu: 0.1% mortality rate.
WHO rate is around 3.4%
Current US rate: 2.8%
Even Fauci is being optimistic that it gets to 1%. That’s 10 times more lethal. We’re currently seeing lethality 20-40 times higher.

The Washington results show the disadvantage of mail voting with over 10% of the vote going to Bloomberg, even though he’s out of the race.

That said, it’s a lot harder to suppress the vote with mail ballots.

Having 30 days of early/mail in voting is a double edge sword. On the one hand you likely get higher turn out. On the other, people who vote early can’t change their minds when something bad comes out closer to election day. I’m not sure what the correct answer is to balance these concerns, though.

BTW, while obsessively eyeballing checking the stock-market figures on Bloomberg, I ran across this gem of cluelessness and unaware self-pity re Harvey Weinstein:

Weinstein Compares #MeToo to McCarthy Era

Harvey Weinstein addressed the court in the final moments before sentencing, warning of a “crisis” in America that he compared with the McCarthy era.

“I’m worried about this country,” he began. “We are going through this crisis right now in our country, it started basically with me. I was the first example and now there are many men who have been accused of abuse, something I think that none of us understood.”

“It is not the right atmosphere for the United States of America,” he said. “Everybody is on some kind of blacklist. I had no power. Miramax was a small company. I couldn’t blackball anybody.”

“I think possibly men like myself, like Dalton Trumbo — they said they were Communists, and now there’s a scare, just like that now.”

No expert on the period, but I have a feeling Dalton Trumbo might have a few points of disagreement with Mr. Weinstein (a type which I’m certain D.T. was familiar with from his Hollywood days).

There’s a reason health experts are warning of dire consequences - it’s because the pattern of the disease spreading is such that it will quickly overwhelm health facilities nationwide - first where the outbreaks are currently clustered, but soon elsewhere as the disease spreads unchecked.

It’s entirely possible that the hospitals would eventually get creamed regardless, but telling people it’s contained; that it’s a hoax; that they shouldn’t consider staying home; etc. etc., with the associated lack of testing, is certainly going to accelerate/exacerbate the issue. Instead of the potential of a more gradual ramping up of the pressure on hospitals and medical providers, we will see an inundation of hospitals, probably in the reddest areas of the country, as people realize that Trump was wholly and entirely full of shit.

Just because the COVID-19 is predominantly fatal to those over 80 years old, that doesn’t mean it’s a walk in the park for the under-40 set:

Take the case of Patient One, the 38-year-old Unilever worker who was the first in Lombardy to contract COVID-19 on Feb. 21 after trying desperately to get someone to test him. Because he had no ties to China, he went from clinic to clinic until someone took him seriously, spreading the virus as he went. He got out of intensive care on Monday after nearly three long weeks. He is still testing positive for the virus, but he is no longer on a respirator. He has no underlying conditions and the disease nearly killed him.

Italy is a window into the future of Florida. Those retirement communities chock-full of angry MAGAts are going to be mass graveyards.

Okay so the ^VIX is a 30 snapshot of S&P volatility, so the reason its movements are inverted right now is that its forward looking calibration is actually optimistic.

That seems, um, suboptimal in the current circumstance, where the event being forecast will both create a new normal and play out over much, much longer than 30 days.

re: #418 Mike Lamb

Aggressive testing is meant to buy time for the response to build up. Instead, it’s going to come like a wave and completely overwhelm public health workers.

China first tried the Trump approach to squelch all talk of an epidemic, silencing doctors issuing warnings, and then began aggressive testing and lockdowns of entire regions. They got compliance because of how authoritarian the regime is there and that has helped to slow the spread there.

That wont work here, because Trump’s already lost the time advantage and cases are flying around the nation and no effort to aggressively test is underway nationwide. Trump’s still insistent on business as usual, which adds to the cases spreading uncontrolled, and no attempt to contain things. This will not end well.

We all know the pattern by now.

Trump/Fox/Rush/Republicans, finally face-to-face with a reality they dismissed, denied, attacked, mocked and ignored … will now try to convince America that THEY NEVER SAID WHAT THEY SAID.

It is absolutely ESSENTIAL that we preserve & maintain the receipts in the weeks and months to come, as the COVID-19 virus spreads across America, overloading hospitals and killing thousands - if not HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS - of Americans. (Note: I didn’t say millions. Not yet. The death toll won’t hit millions until a year from now, and by then Trump will either be out of office, or dead himself.)

slightly OT regarding biden and ‘misspeaking’

- he may be past his prime (so am i)
- he understands briefings
- he can make decisions
- he’s surrounding himself with smart people

and mostly

- he has not demonstrated a misunderstandings of facts.
(or worse, a willful disregard)

And he isn’t an ignorant, psychopathic, racist grifter planning on stealing everything not nailed down.

Ranked choice voting in primaries. That’s the winning answer IMO.

We’re starting to talk about ranked choice voting in Illinois.

I was really disappointed that people who wrote for the Onion were bothered by the fact that Biden liked the Diamond Joe character. I’ll tell you this much. A Sanders type character in The Onion would never flow because Bernie has no sense of humor about himself or anything that I can see.

I do paper billing for most part - I reconcile my cc bills and then shred receipts after they reflect on the bills (at least that’s the plan). I also hold on to cc/utility statements for a year or two, and shred older. Investments I tend to keep longer. Tax papers I keep 7-10 years.

I keep about two years of credit card, utility, etc bills before tossing them (shredding).

I keep medical, pay stubs, and tax stuff longer.

Markets are still open, but it looks like the main equity indices (DJIA, S&P, NASDAQ), have fallen off from yesterday’s “Rally”, and are now trading back around the levels of Monday’s sell-off debacle. Whether they stay there or not (basically at the years’ low) is going to be the BIG indicator….

Two doctors in Italy posted about it like three days ago.

If you’re referring to the Twitter threads, I think I saw them. I have no reason to doubt the authenticity or veracity, but I’d like something more curated. And I do think it’s odd that “Italian hospitals leaving 70-year-olds to die” isn’t more of a story.

So I was walking home from the gym (pretty empty, but all classes that can be taught remotely are being taught remotely), and as I was walking through the empty campus (see above), I had a conversation with a woman who was walking her unemployed therapy dog (hospital visits cancelled for now).

The topic of the election came up and she said she was so disappointed about Bernie’s losing. (OT: when I started to type “Bernie,” my autofill suggested “BernieDolts.”)

“I’m not,” I said. He has no coattails and he can’t network. We need the House and Senate as well as the White House.”

And

She

Didn’t

Argue.

She agreed with me that she’d vote for a cinderblock with a “D” on it this fall (h/t whichever lizard said that first here).

This is the attitude I keep seeing among Berners who aren’t employed as public assholes, and it makes me more and more hopeful about the next election.

But don’t get complacent.

Both of the above are EU news agencies. Neither state “leaving 70 year olds to die” just a little more In an interview that went viral after it was published in the Italian daily Corriere della Sera Monday, Christian Salaroli, an anesthesiologist from a hospital in Bergamo, recounted scenes of wartime triage, where old patients have to be left by the wayside. “The choice is made inside of an emergency room used for mass events, where only COVID-19 patients enter. If a person is between 80 and 95 and has severe respiratory failure, he probably won’t make it.”

The principle of “first come, first served” has been abandoned, said Mario Riccio, an anesthesiologist who works at a hospital in Cremona.
