NSFW After All These Years: Cypress Hill, Tiny Desk Concert

Music • Views: 16,823

Saturday night, Cypress Hill, it just seems to work but you better be ready.

Bobby Carter | July 20, 2023
The first thing I noticed as Cypress Hill strolled into NPR headquarters was Sen Dog cradling his signature bucket hat. I asked him if my assumptions were correct; it was indeed the original hat seen in all the videos from the early ’90s. Before I could process that confirmation, B Real asked me, “Yo, is your greenroom a greenroom?” We got everything we expected and more from Cypress Hill at the Tiny Desk.

While the term “pioneer” is used loosely in pop culture today, few terms describe Cypress Hill’s impact over the past three decades more adequately. They are the first Latino hip-hop group to achieve platinum and multi-platinum status. B Real, Sen and producer DJ Muggs crafted a sound in the ’90s that stretched beyond regional boundaries. It was dark, psychedelic and at times directly addressed mental health before the topic was commonplace. Many dismissed the group as “stoner rappers,” yet the members were fervent advocates for the legalization of weed long before it came to fruition.

Touring members Eric Bobo and DJ Lord joined the duo along with Money Mark from Beastie Boys fame. The band summoned a horn section to fill out this rare minimalist approach to five, funky Cypress Hill things. Between each song, B Real took his time to shed some historic light on the group’s journey thus far.

People should openly speculate if brands pay Ben Shapiro to be offended by their products and services.

Like, that’s the conspiracy theory I’m selling. That most of these right wing grifters are double dipping because they consistently drive people the opposite direction, but specifically into reflexive consumer behavior such that it a monetizable skill.

Interesting video, but how does it relate to NATO?

It doesn’t. After I watched the NATO video, because my computer’s paranoiaware is pretty good at blocking algorithms like YouTube’s, I’ll get random suggestions.

About the closest this gets to NATO is the woman is from Poland and driving a vehicle in Nevada and Idaho with Polish number plates.

So.. Huckabee, the ever-eternal Christ-modeled Christian… advocates for covering up criminal behavior.

The percentage of atheists in America continues to climb for a reason.

Mafia-style coverup is baked right into the Gospels.

In Matthew 18:15-17, Jesus himself says you should follow three steps:

a) Tell the person yourself they “sinned.”
b) If that doesn’t work, take two or three witnesses and tell them again.
c) If that doesn’t work, shun them like “a pagan or tax collector.”

(C is also the basis of libertarianism.)

None of that is “tell the authorities.” Since that’s the words of Jesus himself, that is the basis for churches covering up all manner of criminal activity including raping children. It is to be handled within the church, or the person is to be shunned.

A “true Christian” would seek to resolve all disputes over sin so that person should enjoy the intervention of the congregation to correct their behaviour. (Sure they would.)

And the Epistles (1 Corinthians 5, sequel to the story in 2 Corinthians). In 1 Corinthians, a man is suspected of committing adultery with his stepmother. That person Paul says should be removed from the church. (He doesn’t say report him to the authorities.) In 2 Corinthians, Paul says the man turned from his “lifestyle” (of incest), and the Corinthian Christians should therefore accept him back into their congregation (he’d repented).

NATO relations are getting more complicated, as Turkey is offended by the Christian-turned-atheist Swede who, for a second time, “desecrated” the Qur’an (he did not burn it) in front of the Iraqi embassy in Stockholm. Turkey is demanding the “terrorist” be turned over to the Turkish state for “crimes against Islam” and “hate crimes.” (“Terrorism” in Turkey carries the death penalty.) Sweden refuses. The Swedish ambassador has been expelled for permitting a “terrorist” to “blaspheme” Turkey’s religious faith, citing the nearly one billion Muslims around the world who are outraged. (Conservatives lie, all one billion are not outraged.)

In Iran, there was a ritual burning of the Swedish flag. Iran has also called for the atheist “terrorist” to be executed by the Swedish crown or be extradited to a Muslim country so they can do it.

NATO’s charter is going to become unworkable since membership requires unanimity. Turkey is trying to impose its blasphemy laws on other nations.

While religious states try to impose their blasphemy laws on secular states (India tried to force Michigan to extradite one of Atheist Republic’s founders for blasphemy against Hinduism), across the Muslim world it is a death penalty offence to be an atheist.

Turkey did a great job of being secular for a long time. Erdogan has done most of the destruction of that.

Erdogan didn’t make Turkey an unreliable partner to negotiate with, but he has continued and developed the tradition.

TL;DR: Hun Sen has been in power for thirty-eight years. He has no credible opposition.

After the United Nations helped Cambodia transition to a multi-party democracy after Vietnam broke the rule of the Khmer Rouge through an invasion, Mr. Sen emerged in the election as the victor.

In all six elections, he’s rounded up opposition party leaders, banned political parties, and seized media outlets.

He’s hinted after he wins that his son (leader of the Royal Cambodian Army), who is running for the National Assembly, will be appointed Prime Minister in a couple weeks.

Mr. Sen’s party controls all 138 seats of the National Assembly.

So, a high of 105 today and officially .01’ OF RAIN!

Oh joy, oh, life.

That gives us a total of .04” for the month!

Suck it, Atacama Desert!! You are pawned! We are rolling in our Water Wealth!

I always start the Summer Misery Index at 104, or 40 (commie). That’s the level when wind becomes a blast furnace and is no longer cooling- just more dangerous. So a look at this month’s preliminary data shows we are on a 13-day run of consecutive days of temps between 104 and 108.

It’s 2011 again and we are kitty in the middle when we burned down 3,000 homes east of town. This is dangerously dry and brutal weather.

And it is the witching hour and I have to rise early to watch Brian Harmon, the 5’ 7” (at best) little bulldog win an Open Championship. And some Women’s World Cup games.

I have qualms over the viability of the British and American teams. Lots of key injuries on both squads.

Well, sort of. A PDF from the Government of Turkey on its anti-terrorism law says that all death penalty convictions were converted to “heavy life imprisonment” (they are worked to death).

A whole raft of crimes are listed as terrorism in the document, including “spreading propaganda” (that’s where the blasphemy claim comes in against atheists).

As I expected that these Pulpit Pimps would do

Male anti-abortion religious leaders mull murder charges for pregnant people at national event

An all-male panel of anti-abortion religious leaders from around the country met Friday night to discuss the strategies that should be used to end abortion in every state at any stage of pregnancy, without exceptions for rape and incest, and with criminal punishment for the pregnant person in line with existing criminal penalties for murder, which includes the death penalty.

The panel was part of a week-long series of events hosted by Operation Save America, an anti-abortion, anti-LGBTQ and anti-Muslim religious group that wants all Americans to follow “God’s law” and their interpretation of the Christian gospel. Many of the events were held in Douglasville, Georgia, at Pray’s Mill Baptist Church, which broke away from the Southern Baptist Convention for supposed acceptance of liberal social justice views regarding race and gender. Tuesday through Friday, the group started its mornings by protesting outside of A Preferred Women’s Health Center, an abortion clinic near Atlanta.

Friday’s speakers included Wisconsin-based Operation Save America Director Jason Storms and former OSA director Rusty Thomas, along with Arizona-based End Abortion Now communications director Zachary Conover, Georgia Right to Life President Ricardo Davis, and Gabriel Rench, a member of the extremist Christ Church in Moscow, Idaho.

The theme of OSA’s national event was unity, and highlighted divisions within anti-abortion circles over what they described as the proper approach and response to legislation that seeks to limit or entirely restrict abortion procedures. The moderator of the panel, Derin Stidd, opened by asking, “Why do you all hate women?” to which the men laughed.

Rench then joked about not giving the microphone to Conover and said, “We don’t give him a voice like women,” then added, “Bad joke.”

The comments were in jest, but in line with remarks from OSA speakers throughout the week, including another comment from Rench, who said the church was wrong to allow women to be preachers.

On Thursday, anti-Islam speaker Raymond Ibrahim said, “If you look at a country, and the best they can come up with for a president is a woman, there’s something wrong about that. That doesn’t mean women aren’t smart or capable, I believe that, but if the very best — the crème de la crème — is a woman, that tells me something about the men when it comes to positions of authority and leadership.”

The panel focused on legislation they call “equal protection” bills, such as Georgia’s House Bill 496, also called the Georgia Prenatal Equal Protection Act, which was introduced in February but did not advance in the state’s House of Representatives. An “equal protection” bill, by their definition, is one that adds criminal penalties to a pregnant person for the intentional termination of a pregnancy at any stage, with no exceptions for rape or incest. The law would make an exception if the abortion was performed to prevent the pregnant person’s “imminent death or great bodily injury.”

Operation Save America Director Jason Storms leads an anti-abortion rally Saturday, July 22, 2023 in downtown Atlanta. (John McCosh/Georgia Recorder)

Storms said OSA has advocated for similar bills in more than a dozen states, including Alabama, Arizona, Missouri, Kentucky and Oklahoma. So far, no states have passed an “equal protection” bill, but several, including Georgia, did pass what anti-abortion advocates call “heartbeat bills” that ban abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, before many people know they are pregnant. Those who advocate for “equal protection” bills call themselves “abolitionists,” co-opting language from the movement to abolish slavery, while the “pro-life” community has advocated for more politically expedient bills like six-week bans. Storms and other panelists called the six-week bans weak, even though they expressed understanding of political environments that make “equal protection” bills unlikely to become reality.

Rench said that is the case in Idaho, where many members of the state legislature are part of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The church has taken an official position that rape and incest exceptions are acceptable, and bills that have not included those exceptions, such as one introduced by OSA-endorsed Sen. Scott Herndon of Sandpoint, have gone nowhere in the Idaho Legislature. Christ Church and its followers have taken an approach they dubbed “smashmouth incrementalism,” which acknowledges that change can be achieved through gradual reformation and repentance in the country’s culture.

But Rench said he intends to keep working with Herndon and others to bring equal protection bills back in the next legislative session to keep pushing for it, even though he thinks there is still injustice with criminal penalties for the pregnant person.

How is abortion going to end? Maybe with civil war, speaker says

I’m still POed about the op-ed published in the Los Angeles Times from an anti-pharma nut telling anyone who is taking so-called maintenance medications (talking about clinical depression and other disorders or diseases) to throw them away. Such people are tools of Big Pharma (tm).

The Times came under days of sustained attack for publishing such nonsense from people with heart disorders, cancer, epilepsy, diabetes, &c. Plenty of people with clinical depression also weighed in noting their medications made their lives manageable.

After several days, the Times came out with a mealy-mouthed centrist “you need to hear both sides” argument, arguing that the amount of vitriol being levelled at the newspaper proved that people are stuck in their ways and refuse to listen to other perspectives.

Right, because people who believe in racial equality are “set in the ways” and need to listen to the perspective that white people are inherently superior and members of all racial minorities need to be slaughtered or subjected to servitude in perpetuity.

The Sandhills Tropical Update.

Don is now a hurricane and in Canadian waters. It has intensified as it crosses the Gulf Stream over the Grand Banks.

Hurricane Don is moving slightly east of north, and is starting to turn away from Newfoundland. Winds are currently 120km/h. A hurricane warning is in effect for the Grand Banks and Newfoundland’s coastal waters. Environment Canada released this statement about Hurricane Don earlier this evening.

The next information statement will be issued by 9:00 a.m. NDT Sunday

Don strengthened to hurricane status today and continues to travel over unusually warm ocean water. It is situated well southeast of Newfoundland moving in a northerly direction and forecast to track near the southeastern portion of the Grand Banks tomorrow (still as a strong but small-scale tropical storm, intensity ~55 kts / 100 km/h). Strong to gale-force winds and waves of 3 to 4 m are expected but only for a limited portion of Canadian waters.

Elsewhere in the North Atlantic, the tropical wave which formed of the Cape Verde Islands is now about a thousand miles east of the Windward Islands. The prognostication from the National Hurricane Center has not changed much: The storm will sweep across the islands and into the Caribbean Sea. According to NOAA, water temperatures near the Windward Islands and across the Caribbean Sea are around 28°Commie. The threshold for supporting a tropical cyclone is 26.5°Commie.

The waters near the south coast of Cuba and the southwest coast of Florida are 30°C.
GOES Sea Surface Temperature Map (goes to NOAA)
7-Day Graphical Tropical Outlook (goes to NHC).

There is no suspicious weather in the eastern or central Pacific regions.

Further west, the mass of thunderstorms east of the northern Philippine Islands has formed into Typhoon Doksuri. The storm is undergoing rapid intensification.

It is expected to continue intensifying but turn northeast away from Luzon. By July 26/00Z, the storm is expected to be 120 knots with 145 knot wind gusts, then cut across the southern portion of Taiwan. It will be down to 95 knots as it clears the island and crosses the Taiwan Strait before it slams into China. By July 28/06Z, it should be well-inland and downgraded to a tropical storm at the end of the forecast period.

Typhoon Doksuri Storm Track (Joint Typhoon Warning Center)

By the time Typhoon Doksuri reaches Taiwan, the radius of 64 knot winds (hurricane force) will extend 80 nautical miles from the centre.

At least with Pisswater…er, Bud Light, they could bitch that it was “woke” because it sent a single personalized can to a trans Tik-Tok influencer for a one-time campaign ad intended to try to branch out the brand by showing self-awareness that their brand was known as cheap beer for frat bros.

IMHO, their biggest woke sin was making fun of pregnant Barbie, which they noted was discontinued because a pregnant doll was “weird.” The only appropriate Barbie is pregnant Barbie, fulfilling her God ordained role of birthing babies.//

One of the drawbacks of dealing with folks over the phone versus in-person is you can’t reach through the phone line and smack them upside the head like you really want to when they’re asking you the same dumb question for the third time in two minutes, i.e. what the “weekly rate” is when I’ve already told them twice that we don’t have a fixed rate but instead a discount that’s applied for stays of seven days or longer. From the sounds of this caller, it’s yet another person with the mindset that “‘extended stay’ = apartment” for the purposes of planning their immediate housing needs.

This reminds me that I need to quit procrastinating and apply for new passports for the family if we have any notion of taking a vacation out of the country next year.

That must be for NEW (never before had) passports. I got my renewal in a matter of days. I was expecting it to takes weeks or months. I got the online renewal completed (not sure if they allow that any longer) and had the new passport in hand like 7 days later. The passport card came separately a couple of weeks later.

I agreed to do a last-minute volunteering at church this morning, then after I get home, we’re supposed to play D&D with my friends. I say “supposed to” because, while it’ll probably still happen, one of those friends has a history of being a drama queen at the worst possible times, which strongly demotivates me from wanting to play. And of course, now is one of those times.

Yes, it’s a shit situation, not made much better when the same folks get so far behind on their rent that there’s no way they can pay what they owe and get current with their daily rate so they decide to just flip us the bird and force us to go through the eviction process. It sours whatever good impression we had of them, it just ends up costing us money we can’t afford, and they get tossed out anyway.

He died—was run over by a bulldozer—when protesting the building of a segregated school in Cleveland, OH in 1964. en.wikipedia.org

A couple of things: I mean, the people who wrote this book expected me to be shocked that there was stone racism in the North. Hell, folks, I remember anti-busing protests in Boston when I was a teenager in the 1970s. Or my dad flatly telling me in the mid-80s about how Chicago was hella more racist than Houston. “At least in Houston it’s open.” I guess I was *offended* by the idea that some people considered the North to be this non-racist haven. Nothing could be further from the truth, and that’s based on my lived experience. Perhaps they weren’t writing for 63 YO people. Probably. But it’s their argument that we don’t hear about Bruce Klunder because well, his story doesn’t fit into the stereotypical “white Southerners racist” narrative. Well, no, because white Americans in general tend to be racist to greater or lesser degrees. And I include myself in this, because I am SURE there are areas where the racism I was inculcated with from my life in white society haven’t been dug out and exposed to the light of day.

The second thing was the quotes from white people at the time, talking about Black people—it’s the same sort of shiz you’ll read on Twitter. But what can we do about it when Apartheid Clyde Elon Musk is letting the racists out to play?

The Forgotten Story Of How Hawaiians Transformed American Music
Hawaiian musicians touring across America in the 1900s had an enormous — and often overlooked — impact on the development of blues and country music.

This was mind-blowing when a musician friend told me. Hawaiians had to bunk with black folks because of segregation. So they jammed together and shared ideas between them. And that benefitted all of our society.

Rice as an adjunct was an important change to meet American conditions too. Most American places used Corn (up here in the northern Midwest forex) but in St. Louis where Anheuser-Busch was located, corn was more expensive. Thus rice.

Ice box cars keeping beer cold (keeping it fresh) was another important innovation.

The story of how the Coors plot got in Smokey and the Bandit is interesting: while Hal Needham served as the stunt coordinator and second-unit director on the Burt Reynolds-starring/directed Gator a couple of years before, one of his stuntmen brought out some Coors with them to the shooting location in Georgia and people kept swiping it. At first, Needham was wondering why people kept going for the poor guy’s Coors, then he realized that its legal unavailability in the Eastern US owing to how it was made at the time would be an interesting plot for a movie. So, Needham wrote the initial drafts of the script and Reynolds backed him to direct it in his directorial debut.

Surprisingly not. It’s mostly X logos cribbed from Google Images and cringy AI stuff.

There was a very interesting “The Foods That Made America” episode about American beer. Everything you all like to complain about with these beers was a solution to the problem that plagued a lot of food and led to numerous advances: how do you ship beer hundreds of miles, before reliable refrigeration, without it going bad.

That was never the case in most of Central Europe where thousands and thousands of local breweries all served their markets which consisted of one town or region at most.

The story of how the Coors plot got in Smokey and the Bandit is interesting: while serving as the stunt coordinator and second-unit director on Gator a couple of years before, one of his stuntmen brought out some Coors with them to the shooting location in Georgia and people kept swiping it. At first, Needham was wondering why people kept going for the poor guy’s Coors, then he realized that its legal unavailability in the Eastern US at the time owing to how it was made at the time would be an interesting plot for a movie. So, Needham wrote the initial drafts of the script and Reynolds backed him to direct it in his directorial debut.

Gotta admit that I loved that movie and it only got even more pronounced in my heart when my mother bought a 6 liter Trans Am with the big bird on the hood (gold paint, beautiful car). I was home on leave from the army in Europe and a friend asked me to go to Minneapolis from Eau Claire to hit the record stores (1984 ish). At 4 he realized he was supposed to be in EC at his radio station for his show at 5!- a 90 minute drive away at the speed limit. I promised I’d get him there on time … ;)

With my mother’s TransAm I was hitting 3 digits on the on ramp … O_O

We made it there with, literally, a minute to spare. 4:59 on the car’s clock. I remember him gibbering “ohmygodohmygodhomygod” while death gripping the grab bar in front of the passenger seat the whole way back. I was 20, in the army, I had utterly no fear of death that wasn’t from the Soviets (!) and I had the one of the most powerful cars I’ve driven in my life in my hands. He wasn’t going to escape!

Love that skit the best part is:

One day, I was sitting at home, threatening the kids, when this tank drives up. One of Dinsdale’s boys gets out all nice and friendly like, and says Dinsdale wants to have a talk with me. So, he chains me to the back of the tank, and takes me for a scrape round to Dinsdale’s place. Dinsdale’s there in the conversation pit with Doug, Charles Paisley the Baby Crusher, a couple of film producers and a man they called Kierkegaard, who just sat there biting the heads of whippets . And Dinsdale says ‘I hear you’ve been a naughty boy, Clement’, and he splits me nostrils open, saws me leg off and pulls me liver out. And I tell him ‘My name’s not Clement’, and then he loses his temper and nails my head to the floor.

Saw Oppenheimer yesterday with my lawyer buddy and we were both thoroughly impressed. One of the best movies I have seen in the past several years. Cillian Murphy should be a Best Actor favorite, while the movie and Christopher Nolan deserve at least Best Picture and Best Director nominations as well. Two other shoutouts for the score and the cinematography.

Also glad we saw the movie with subtitles. Can only imagine what this film would be like in 70mm IMAX, let alone the Dolby giant-screen theater that was sold out here.

So, verdict on ST: SNW “Those Old Scientists”? I enjoyed it. Wasn’t as whacky as I expected it to be after three seasons of LD, but overall I think it did well. If anything, it felt more like a self-insert fanfic than it did yet another ST time travel story.

It wasn’t the greatest Trek ever but the correct annoying, humorless sods on trekbbs.com hated it, so I was happy.

I continue to remain absolutely fucking amazed that it is 2023 and we’re discussing the “good” of slavery and the “skills” that the slaves were (forced to) learn.

FFS, I thought we’d already worked ourselves past this shit back around the time Reagan was in office. Is my generation seriously going to spend its time trying to dump our grandparents burdens onto the next generation?

Late to this conversational thread, but Heather Cox Richardson addressed the new social studies standards in detail last night, and I learned more about what the idiots are trying to cover up.

heathercoxrichardson.substack.com

The Florida Board of Education approved new state social studies standards on Wednesday, including standards for African American history, civics and government, American history, and economics. Critics immediately called out the middle school instruction in African American history that includes “how slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit.” (p. 6). They noted that describing enslavement as offering personal benefits to enslaved people is outrageous.

But that specific piece of instruction in the 216-page document is only a part of a much larger political project.

So I’ve been watching Star Trek TOS on DVDs borrowed from my library. I’m halfway through season 2 and last night, I was pleased to find 2 of my absolute favorite episodes back-to-back on the DVDs. The first was The Trouble with Tribbles and the second, A Piece of the Action. Maybe because these episodes are light-hearted instead of the serious nature of the rest, they just a real pleasure to watch again. The latter episode, filmed on a back lot at Paramount, is easily recognizable as the filming location used a few years later, for The Godfather, Part II, in a number of the street scenes.

On a side note, the producers of the disk, did a great job of restoring the original film and converting it to digital. The images are sharp and the pastel colors they alway used really pop. The second is, during the sixties, TV shows produced twice the number of episodes that they have today. Season 1 & 2 consisted of 26 episodes as opposed to the 10-13 produced today (well, will be when the strike is over).

At the risk of being an annoying pedant, the first season had 29 episodes. The second season had 26, and the third season had 24.
