Well now that was quick.
One down already in the Speakerstakes!
PA lawmaker running for Speaker bails an hour after plugging himself on Fox
ep. Dan Meuser (R-PA) was one of nine lawmakers vying to replace the ousted Kevin McCarthy in hopes of becoming the next House Speaker.
And Meuser wasn’t shy about sharing why he would be the best candidate to lead the house out of D.C. dysfunction.
“I have a plan that will make the Speaker’s office more — we will put members first,” he said during an appearance on Fox Business, that he pinned to his Twitter/X feed.
Minutes later, he replaced the almost three-minute self-boosting soundbite for Speaker with a concession thread explaining why he was no longer seeking the gavel.
“…I want to focus on this commitment, as well as the House and PA Senate race, so therefore, I am withdrawing from the Speaker’s race,” he posted on social media.
“I believe the House will elect a new Speaker, and I know we will be in good hands with one of our colleagues running. I’ve spoken to President Trump, and he supports my decision.”
He reportedly made an announcement to widespread applause.
“After giving his speech at tonight’s candidate forum, Rep. Dan Meuser dropped out of the speaker’s race, per members in the room,” wrote CNN’s Melanie Zanona in a social media post during the candidates’ forum. “He got a standing ovation, and members said it was an honorable move. Eight others are still in the running. Forum still ongoing.”
But prior to speaking to former President Donald Trump, Meuser was bolder on Speaker Meuser the unifier.

Bravo Seth for bucking the gotdam suit and tie late night host trend whose time has long past.
Just learned that a best friend and roommate for a couple years died at 57. I know everyone does it and we really can’t feel guilty for what is mostly an unconscious reaction, but there is that small actuarial part of my brain thinking, “well, my odds just improved.” I hate it, but yes, there’s the sense the catastrophe just happened to someone else. Maybe Death hunts on the other side of the herd now for awhile.

“A number of Republicans emerging from closed-door meeting worried their speaker candidates can’t get 217 on the floor,” Raju posted to X. “Some fear if they can’t this time, more Rs will want to cut a deal with Dems to reopen House.”
“They don’t want to work with Democrats, but it might end up to be a point where that’s the only way,” said Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-FL). “We’ve got to get the government open. People are very angry, upset.”
Folks were telling you all the way back in January that it was inevitable that the loonies would pull the lever and eject Qev. Every time it looked like he was peeving them just a little, talk was immediately about whether or not this would be the thing that sent them to the floor with a vacate motion.
But instead of nipping this in the bud or at the very least cultivating a back-up Speaker that could be put forward when it happened, you kept acting as though things were under control and if you just kept feeding the tiger red meat it would let you ride it forever. Now here you are, whining because the tiger’s biting your ass and the only people who can help you are the ones you’ve been pissing on for ages. Sucks to suck.

It never would have worked. Arafat got too much street cred as a rebel, leading a terrorist campaign with the end goal of wiping out Israel and pushing the Jews into the sea. Accepting the deal would have meant becoming a leader, trying to get his former colleagues under control, and hammering together disparate peoples into a unified nation under the watchful eye of the world. He’d have either ended up assassinated, deposed, or would have brought the whole thing crashing down within a decade if not a year.

True story. One of my close friends in Steamboat Springs is friends with Bill, and he was following around the U.S. Pro Cycling Championship in Colorado (circa 2010). My friend invited me on the ride (Steamboat Springs to Avon, almost a hundred miles and spanning three major drainages [lots of hills to climb]). I wasn’t about to do that ride on the only bike I owned at the time, a full-suspension mountain bike.
So I’m shopping for computer stuff…
Trying to see what is on Amazon reminds me of those old giant warehouses full of used goods, where there isn’t really much one can do but walk the aisles and discover things here and there.
The tough nut is the monitor. Would love an Apple monitor but damn they are expensive. $2k for a 5K monitor with height adjustment (because the stand costs so much.)
Back in the day (like, 1980s) I’d shop for NEC which made decent monitors. Then Iyama or Viewsonic.
The latter brand is still in business but Amazon (and Best Buy) have so many off-brand monitors that I gather some factories in China just produces them in large quantities and then different companies just slap their own names on them.
When the ATSC came out with their standard it was clear that flat panels would soon totally replace CRTs, which of course happened.
But also what happened is that the 16:9 aspect pushed out other aspect ratios for computer monitors.
I prefer a monitor that is slightly more square. iMacs use 16:10 which I like, but there are very few 16:10 monitors available for sale anymore.
Sigh…

This is about a lot more than just his personal Wiki page. Musk is just the face of a movement of klept (in the William Gibson Jackpot sense) billionaire oligarchs operating under the information warfare strategy pioneered under Putin and best articulated by Steve Bannon as “flood the zone with bullshit.” It involves undermining the populace’s very ability to understand and accept objective reality, by giving us not one story to believe, but by inundating everyone with so many contradictory conspiracy theories that nobody knows what to believe, so we all stop believing in anything.
Like yes, he’s an absolutely ridiculous narcissistic dipshit with no self control, and that might actually be all we need to understand his initial reason for deciding to purchase twitter. But as to why he had his play backed by the Saudi royal family and other billionaire oligarchs, we need to comprehend the leverage opportunity it provided over international public discourse. We need to understand the opportunity that making Twitter go private presented, to make certain inconvenient events like the Arab Spring never happen again. If we understand that, then it becomes obvious that the “feud” with Jimmy Wales over Wikipedia is just another gambit in that same campaign. A way to co-opt a crucial, perhaps the only truly effective epistemological online repository left to humanity. If they can wrest control of that, then they can effectively destroy the very idea of objective reality.
And that is the true Frontier of Credibility, the ability to reset entire populations’ concept of what is real and what isn’t. By first get us to believe in nothing, thereby allowing them to do whatever they want, then by having us accede to the reality they first forced upon us and then subsequently retconned.

Jean-Maurice-Émile Baudot - 11 September 1845 - 28 March 1903), French telegraph engineer and inventor of the first means of digital communication Baudot code, was one of the pioneers of telecommunications. He invented a multiplexed printing telegraph system that used his code and allowed multiple transmissions over a single line.[1] The baud unit was named after him.
The book I’m reading mentions that he came up with one of the first codes for translating characters into text, which used five binary digits, and laster also used on of the unused codes to expand his set beyond 32.

See, this is a mindset I would believe in someone like a Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, or Mark Zuckerberg to be more contemporary. That belief in the idea of technology as a means to control the flow of information and thus control people. That you don’t use your money and your influence to force editors to pulp stories but instead feed half-truths and outright lies to reporters, that you pay TV networks not to can shows or episodes but instead to air “the other side of the debate,” and other little things that cause this “fog of war” that makes viewers question reality.
But no, Elmo is in the same league as Thomas Edison or Donald Trump, a bullshit artist who is used to bullying others into doing his bidding with threats of ruining them or those close to them if they don’t comply. That’s because Elmo the Boi Nazi is much more Pinky than the Brain… 😉
Elmo is one of those people who styles themselves as an “ideas guy.” You know the kind, the one who feels they have value because they “think outside the box” or have an “open mind” when really they just belch out whatever comes to mind like somebody with indigestion belching up bile. The ones who come from either rich or at least upper-middle class backgrounds who “make their fortune” by blowing their parents money on a hunch, then use that money to pay other people to make their “ideas” into workable reality. And also the ones who are a headache to lawyers because they view the law and the enforcement there of as yet another tool to bully others.
re: #114 Targetpractice
See, this is a mindset I would believe in someone like a Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, or Mark Zuckerberg to be more contemporary.
…
But no, Elmo is in the same league as Thomas Edison or Donald Trump, a bullshit artist who is used to bullying others into doing his bidding with threats of ruining them or those close to them if they don’t comply. IOW, if he’s partnered with others in a war upon information and the truthful distribution of such, it’s as a henchman rather than the mastermind.
Okay but the crucial mistake I believe you’re making is thinking of Elon the reckless fuckup individual as somehow operationally distinct from the larger billionaire oligarch milieu in which he operates. IOW it doesn’t actually matter if he’s a henchmen or mastermind. In fact it doesn’t matter if there even is a mastermind, because there isn’t, and even if there were one the billionaire oligarchs would still collectively operate indistinguishably from a gestalt, similar to Devastator from the Transformers. Meaning the only lasting influence they can have upon our world is that to which they can collectively agree, which due to their various motivations canceling each other out is therefore limited to that which they can effectively agree to preserve or destroy.
And what they collectively want to preserve is inherited wealth while what they want to collectively destroy is the very concept of objective reality, because that’s what actually stands in the way of each of them, individually and dynastically, attaining power.

It’s fun to compare him against a real one like Steve Jobs. Who could also be an incredible ass but really could come up with real ideas and pull of things others could not. re: #37 Targetpractice
As I’ve said before, I have no doubt that he believed he would be signing his death warrant if he agreed to peace. And he was too much of a coward to take the risk.

43 is as big as you can go on a desktop with a flat TV, but it’s the equivalent of 4 21 inch monitors, so I can move files all over the place. And i can sit back and stream a show.
I got a 43 inch TV as my home monitor, and I prefer it to the four monitor setup I could have at work. (Could have; I disconnected two of the monitors because their location made it difficult to actually read them.

One could argue that both comes from different ends of a spectrum, Jobs making his fortune being an “ideas guy” who approached things from the practical end, while Musk is one of those “ideas guys” who think the goal should be to “push the envelope” and expect the people doing the actual work to make it reality. Jobs is on record as saying he and Woz came up with the Apple I because they wanted a cheap computer that fit their needs, while Musk has been more about pushing the technology as far as he can. But based upon the reports of others, both are still a pair of egotistical jackasses who are a nightmare to work for but you still keep cashing the paychecks because you want to “be a part of something.”

Someone, please tell me if this isn’t malpractice. I learned that a friend of mine was given metformin, 500 mg 2x a day. She’s been complaining of feeling queasy since she started taking it last week, so I asked her if she was testing her blood sugar. No, she doesn’t have a meter. She wasn’t even told she NEEDED a meter. I threw a bloody hissy fit about how she needed to have a meter and log her blood sugar so she can keep track of what it’s doing. For all we know, she may be knocking her blood sugar into the 70s or worse when she takes metformin. The doctor apparently explained NOTHING to her.

Decided I hadn’t played a Civ game in awhile so I booted up Civ VI to kill a bit of time. Then I got curious how long a stretch it had been and checked the last save game…which shows a date of 2019. Now I’m afraid to check the save dates on the other games I used to binge.

You’re right: this is bad medical practice. I have pre-diabetic issues myself: my GP flagged a bad number in a blood test, and sent me straight to an endocrinologist. She started me on Metformin (thank goodness I didn’t have any bad reactions to it), but switched ASAP to more-effective stuff (Mounjaro now). But she also impressed on me the need to constantly monitor. And the meters are easy enough (and partly covered by insurance so cheap enough) to use. Queasiness as a reaction usually means something is not right: your upset is justified IMO.

Heh. I only discovered Civ 6 a year ago and it’s been my go to game until I started Baldur’s Gate recently. Civ says I’ve got over 2000 hours logged now and I got up to playing on deity level. Good game, good times

The same damned thing happened to me in June 2022 when I was first diagnosed. I was put on metformin with no guidance at all and not even prescribed a meter. After several days of not tolerating the metformin, I went to the after hours walk in clinic and the PA there was surprised that I hadn’t been issued a meter. I got taken off the metformin and had my prescription changed to an older medication, glipazide, and then had to pester my then-primary care provider by calling up and asking them if I should’ve been prescribed a meter and regularly testing my blood sugar. That got me a meter. Then, as soon as I could, I switched to my current provider.
My A1C was 10.4 when I was diagnosed. By six months after diagnosis, I had it down to a 5.5 and I am now also off the glipazide, relying upon lisinopril and diet to keep things in check.
I’m so glad I’m no longer dealing with my first provider.

Eh? Not true in some of my circles. I know a few landowners and real estate developers around these parts who are living comfortably and all they think about is money.
I remember going to parties at ASU with clusters of business students talking about business.
There was once a guy and a girl talking about their respective post-graduation business plans, to which the fellow asked “But can you get capital?” and the girl tossed her hair and stating confidently “I can get capital!”
That became one of our catch phrases.

Old money never talks about money. New money talks about it ALL. THE. TIME.
Then there is the example of Russia. Under the Soviet regime, the better-off were taught to be discrete about their wealth and privelege so as not to disturb the veneer of civility that their ideology called for.
But under the oligarchs, it is all about crass and disgusting displays of tasteless opulence.

Things will never change so long as one or both sides are led by men whose hold on power depends upon there being conflict. Unfortunately, history has shown that when men who wished peace came forward, those who desired continued conflict would not abide.

Musk seems to like being an asshole in order to just bully, firing anyone who disagreed with him. I know the tyoe as I lost a job I had for 16 years when I told someone they were wrong when they wee..
But I also had managers like Jobs. They could be an asshole but tended to respect those who could defend their work. If you could not explain what you were doing at the company they wondered why you were there. Which is why so many of his top people were with him for decades. He recognized all those who worked on the Original Mac by putting their signatures in the plastc on the inside. Those names will be there in every Original Mac in future.
But there are two anecdotes about him that make me smile. He never had license plates on his mercedes.ca at that time had a loophole that said you did not need plates for the first 6 months you had a new car. So he leased cars on 6 month intervals. It had nothing to do with identifying the vehicle because everyone knew that a grey Mercedes with no plates was Jobs’. I think he did not like how plates destroyed the clean lines of the car.
The other story is about how he alays parked in a handicapped parking spot at Apple so he did not have to walk far. Apple has never had executive parking so often the CEOs who were not Jobs would walk 10 minutes to get to the building.
But not Jobs. He parked in a handicapped parking spot not too far from the door. Only it was not an official restricted parking spot. When peple would call the police to come out, they would reply that it was not a proper space.
Apparently, according to Wozniak, Jobs painted a space to look like a handicapped one. But he knew it was not. No one else would park in it though so he always had a space close to the building. He did not care if he looked like a jerk. He knw the truth and he did not have to walk.
That man was an evil genius ;-)

I wouldn’t go for a large TV since the colour balance isn’t quite right for computer display and things like photo editing. I use a 43” 4k monitor, the Dell UltraSharp U4320Q which comes with a three-year on-site exchange warranty since it’s a business model rather than consumer-grade. It can do tricks like split-screen with four inputs if you really want it to but it’s something I’ve never needed myself.
Apple thinks everyone who buys their stuff is a 30-something with good eyesight hence their 27” maximum monitor size. God forbid more than two people need to read the same screen at one time either.

Translation: His lawyers arguing the legal theory that Donald J. Trump is simultaneously too important to politics to put on trial and too unimportant in light of other federal crimes to put on trial for the worst attack on American democracy in modern history.
On the one hand, his lawyers would be remiss if they did not pursue every legal avenue available. Because on its merits, the case against Trump is looking very solid.

While that’s true, and I would expect them to try novel legal arguments in a case that is the first of its kind (a former president being tried for what essentially amounts to seditious conspiracy, even though that is not one of the charges currently on the docket), there is a line between “novel legal arguments” and “stupid legal arguments.” Some of these are stupid legal arguments, and I hope the court calls them out as such. Note that the court likely won’t do anything to him or his lawyers over it, as courts generally give lawyers an opportunity to understand that they have made a grave mistake before the punishment starts.

Yes. If they had any actual legal arguments against the charges, they would have come out already. Lawyers generally take a shotgun approach to motion practice; motions to dismiss may contain multiple lines of legal argument, sometimes contradictory. Those are usually phrased as, “If this defense fails, then there’s this other, otherwise contradictory, defense that would apply.” That the best argument they have at this point is, “LOL double jeopardy” and “but muh freeze peach,” is not a good sign for the defense.

re: #165 Nerdy Fish
While that’s true, and I would expect them to try novel legal arguments in a case that is the first of its kind (a former president being tried for what essentially amounts to seditious conspiracy, even though that is not one of the charges currently on the docket), there is a line between “novel legal arguments” and “stupid legal arguments.” Some of these are stupid legal arguments, and I hope the court calls them out as such. Note that the court likely won’t do anything to him or his lawyers over it, as courts generally give lawyers an opportunity to understand that they have made a grave mistake before the punishment starts.
Remember that trump is used to throwing every legal argument at the wall in hopes that his litigants would run out of money and go away. The US gov ain’t gonna play that.

It’s going to get to a point where the remaining defendants wont be given a chance to take a deal, or that deal will be indistinguishable from a guilty verdict at trial. We might see a few more quick plea deals announced, but it might slow into next year as the evidence Powell and Chesebro are digested by prosecutors. There might be superseding indictments too, and additional parties named.
This term SCOTUS will decide if domestic abusers under a DVO have a constitutional right to own a gun so that they can more easily murder their significant others and their children. Under SCOTUS’ recent decision adopting originalism as applied to Second Amendment cases, Bruen, it’s an easy question to answer. Since men were expected to physically discipline their wives and children, domestic violence was not illegal in the 19th century, so of course domestic abusers were not barred from owning guns, and the law is unconstitutional. However this is the Calvinball Court, and Roberts and Kavanaugh left themselves an out in a concurring opinion to Bruen that allows them to join with the three liberals to uphold gun laws, just because they say so. It will be interesting to see who joins Thomas in holding that domestic abusers should have guns.

It looks like the right wing has discovered Shareholder Proposals. I received a proxy statement from MicroSoft and there are proposals to (1) require the company to write a report on how funding abortion and gender affirming care negatively impacts moms, (2) require a report on the risk of omitting ideology from their equal employment opportunity statements (quote from the proposal “There is ample evidence that individuals with conservative viewpoints may face discrimination at Microsoft. According to a letter sent to the Company by Congressman Jim Jordan”), (3) a report itemizing any take-down requests from any US government agency including name and position of official, and a (4) “request that the Company adopt a policy requiring that, prior to making a donation or expenditure that supports the political activities of any trade association, social welfare organization, or entity established and operated primarily to engage in political activities”, that these third party organizations provide a gazillion more bits of information than they already do.
Of course, there are left leaning proposals on climate change and the like, and I’ve occasionally seen a right leaning proposal, but this seems much more coordinated than in the past.

“If I knew then what I know now, I would have declined to represent Donald Trump in these post-challenges,” Ellis said. “I look back on this experience with deep remorse.”

Ellis pointed a finger at Giuliani in her plea agreement by admitting she aided and abetted the fellow Trump lawyer’s “false statements” to Georgia legislators at a December 2020 hearing and acknowledged she was, “Assisting with the execution of” the hearing with Giuliani and co-defendant Ray Smith, also a former Trump campaign lawyer.

The reputation of those who practice the legal profession, which has always been none to great, sure is taking a hit these days. Perhaps the law schools should provide more training on Constitutional law or maybe lawyers shouldn’t treat Saul Goodman as a professional role model. With the U.S. House of Representatives still without a speaker after three weeks—and with no end in sight to the drama—The New Abnormal co-host Andy Levy has someone in mind.
“There’s nothing in the rules that says the speaker has to be a member of Congress. And that’s why we’ve been hearing Donald Trump’s name floated,” Lexy explains.
“I think I have the right pick. I think it should be Arnold Schwarzenegger. Because he has experience being a kindergarten cop.”
Levy adds Schwarzenegger is perfect for the role because it’s like “trying to keep a bunch of kindergarten kids in line and letting them know when it’s nap time and when they have to drink their milk and whatever.”

We might see a few more quick plea deals announced, but it might slow into next year as the evidence Powell and Chesebro are digested by prosecutors. There might be superseding indictments too, and additional parties named.
But far cheaper for them especially when they don’t have the financial resources to keep up a fight. Innocent people do plead because they cannot afford justice but, in this case, not a single one is innocent of the attempt to overthrow the government.

Good lord, this makes me hate her more. Fake tears, high-pitched voice, and deflection of blame? Typical lying conservative.
She KNEW the cries of election fraud were fake. She was there in the room. She knows these people. She knows Donald freaking Trump.
Hollow words from a hollow person.
Religious extremism stops people from maturing into responsible adults. You can be a lawyer without growing up first. That’s not good.

I guess Jesus told Jenna to flip.
Probably her bank statement was what advised her.

That is a GLORIOUS nest!
Thanks! I improve it in increments. The M7 wants to be a smart tv but I don’t use any of that. Premium channels like Netflix all do well through their web browser portals.

Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minn.): 107 votes
not gonna cut it
i really do have to stop trying to diplomatically explain stuff to dumb assholes on bluesky. i’ve tried it twice now with bad results. from now on, I will try to only be pedantic here, where it is tolerated, if not appreciated.

re: #297 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))
But he would not be able to be in line to succeed the President
True — but irrelevant to the actual role of Speaker. Plenty of others are in line.

Now if Johnson can pick up the 25 votes for Hern and the 25 votes for Donalds - we’ll have a nice 107-106 death rattle.

Nevermore will we be able to ponder, weakly and wearily the diff’rence between reality and parody.

re: Jenna Ellis and her crocodile tears:
* Ken White points out on Bsky that the crime she pleaded guilty to requires intent to commit a crime, e.g. she admitted that she knew what she was doing was wrong at the time she did it. Spare us the “if I knew what I was doing was wrong, I wouldn’t have done it” bullshit.
* Mike Dunford reminds us that Ellis wore a smug smirk in her booking photo. She’s not remorseful, she’s just saying what the judge wants to hear. It’ll be just like those J6 assholes who shouted “Trump won” as soon as the judge left the courtroom.

If you pronounce her name correctly, you then have to explain that you’re not a fan. I like the shorthand of calling her Ann, which says you dgaf about her.

I love Jennifer Granholm. She was supposed to be the speaker at our state convention dinner last year, but she got sick.

re: #267 No Malarkey!
No, on the map there is a spot in East Tennessee as well.
There’s also a tiny spot in central Oklahoma. That’s where a lot of fracking is going on. There was an earthquake in Prague, OK in the early ’10s. I pinpointed the epicenter to a particular crossroads in the area and asked my dad about. “Nope, I would have no idea why there’d be an earthquake at that location.” (Well, except for the fracking.
