We live in a society exquisitely dependent on science and technology, in which hardly anyone knows anything about science and technology.
I have long wanted to write a fantasy novel in which an average 21st-century schmoe accidentally time travels back to...say, ancient Rome for example. Once there, after getting his bearings, he realizes -- Hey, I'm from the 21st century! I know about all the incredible inventions and discoveries of the next 2,000 years! I can be a God among men to these backwards morons!
The punchline, which goes on for the rest of the book, is that, being the exact kind of contemporary ignoramus that Carl Sagan describes, our hero actually has no idea how to create anything, nor any knowledge of the scientific or engineering principles underlying anything.
So, when he tries to make airplanes, televisions, automobiles, photography, refrigerators -- well anything actually, even something as simple as paper or steel -- not only is he unable to bedazzle the Roman rubes with these inventions, but he can't even describe how they work or how they're made to the Roman scientists.
He ends up being revealed as more useless and more ignorant than the typical Roman village idiot.
Pure comedy gold, I tells ya. Now only if I had a spare year to write the dang novel...

If you came to where I work, you could take your pick of moonbats who'd tell you just that. Last week it was 20 degrees hotter than 'normal', so that was evidence of "global warming", as was the cooler than 'normal' days a few weeks prior. Wouldn't "every advanced tool" include a GPS-based phone? If it does, and someone comes back in a thousand years, they'll find that deserted island deserted, because the guy used those advanced tools to get rescued.

re: #41 Slumbering Behemoth
I've actually put some thought into this. If I, for example, was transported back to ancient Rome, what could I do to impress the Romans?
Keep in mind that I personally have absolutely no training or education in engineering or physics or anything like that.
After a while, it dawned on me: Hot air balloons! The principle is so simple, even I understand how they're made. And it's easy enough to start with small prototypes and work your way up.
The hardest part would be trying to get a fabric or some kind of material with a tight enough weave to be the basis for an airtight surface. I don't think silk had made it from China to Europe yet, though cotton was available as far as I know. Problem is, any "sealant" I could think of, such as wax or pitch/tar, is flammable, which would be problematic. How to make a non-flammable airtight balloon, of any size? Hmmmm..
My backup plan: Wicker frisbees!

re: #51 Slumbering Behemoth
Another possibility I would focus on:
Lenses.
The Romans knew how to make glass, but they apparently never got the idea to use it for lenses, nor for plate-glass windows. I think it would be fairly simple to experiment with grinding down and polishing any number of discarded hunks of glass, until one succeeds in making a fairly decent convex lens. One you make one fucntional one, you can copy it. With the lenses, you could make magnifying glasses, telescopes, microscopes, eyeglasses -- all sorts of amazing stuff.
On a more obvious level, one could invent "leaded windows" i.e. stained-glass-windows without the stained part. Hard for us to imagine, but the Romans did not have window panes. I know that making a big sheet of flat plate glass is quite difficult, but little pieces are easy enough, and one could piece them together.
Give me two years as an apprentice in a Roman glassworks, and I'll change the world!

Yeah, but first of all, there was no paper in ancient Rome -- it didn't reach Europe til the late Middle Ages, if I remember correctly. Secondly, I don't know how to make paper myself. And lastly, the Chinese had kites even before the Roman era, so even if I could make one, I wouldn't be doing something that someone else had already done.

Interesting series of events in just unver a year on one Kentucky shortline railway:
May 2008: RJ Corman's Kentucky Lines QJ Class 2-10-2 purchased from China makes its maiden run.
December 2008: RJ Corman's Kentucky Lines begins testing a 2000 horsepower RP20BD genset from Brossard, Quebec-based Railpower Technologies. Similar locomotives have already been tested or purchased by the Union Pacific, Pacific Harbor Lines, Burlington Northern-Santa Fe, Kansas City Southern, Modesto & Empire Traction, Belt Railway of Chicago and even the U.S. Army.
Febuary 2009: Railpower Technologies declares bankruptcy.
April 2009: Brossard, Que-based Railpower Technologies slashes half its workforce and announces it is seeking to liquidate remaining assets.
May 2009: R.J. Corman Railroad Group announces that they will be purchasing Railpower Technologies assets.
This is a very shrewd move by the R.J. Corman group. Besides manufacturing locomotives, Railpower also had ventured into making cranes. Besides running a series of disconnected railways in Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and West Virgnia, R.J. Corman also cleans up after derailments....which normally require some sort of heavy-duty cranes.
So in less than a year, RJ Corman goes from purchasing a secondhand Chinese steam locomotive to owning the manufacturer of high-tech genset and hybrid locomotives.

Take a flat surface, tilt it at an angle.
Get a small spherical ball of any material.
Dip the ball in paint.
Roll the ball in an arc across the slanted flat surface.
Whaddya got? A parabola!
Ex post facto draw Cartesian coordinates (i.e. "graph paper") over the parabola.
Using laborious trial-and-error (because I'm an idiot), reverse-engineer the algebraic equation for parabolas using the points on the graph.
Once you have that, you can then make parabolas of any curvature.
With those, easy enough to make parabolic mirrors.
With those, a communication system across Europe with mountaintop searchlight beacons and a form of Morse Code!
The world is mine, I tell you: MINE!

Don’t Demonize Chrysler’s Debt Holders For Standing Up For Their ShareholdersSTEVE STANEK
President Obama last Thursday gave us reason to wonder what he believes is more important: respect for rule of law or his desire for more government control over the economy.
“A small group of speculators” is how Obama disparaged holders of Chrysler debt who resisted government pressure to accept a small fraction of what they are owed as Chrysler filed for bankruptcy Thursday.
The money managers at these firms — including Oppenheimer Fund, Perella Weinberg Partners and Stairway Capital Management — rightly stood up for their shareholders and investors, who include government pension funds, school endowments, and corporate and individual retirement investors.

Kites can be made of animal skins or papuyrus, both of which the Romans had.

re: #54 zombie
Another possibility I would focus on:
Lenses.
Renaissance techniques for grinding lenss involved moving an abrasive stone across the glass blank in a regular pattern of strokes. As the abrasive is moved across the glass, the material would be removed. The more often the stone passed over a given area of the glass, the more material would be removed. The patterns used resembled a multipoint star, with the glass in the middle. Different patterns would be used to create different curvatures. The result, if done carefully, would be a reasonably precise parabolic lens of a specified curvature or power. The interesting thing is the craftsman making the lens did not need to know anthing about algebra or geometry or parabolas. All he had to do was move his arm in the right pattern and a parabola would result.

Look's like the Messiah has problems speaking Spanish:
'El no habla': Obama jumbles Cinco de Mayo salute
WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama's joke wasn't lost in translation—even though he referred to a Cinco de Mayo celebration as "Cinco de Cuatro."
Obama jumbled his words as he welcomed guests to the White House to observe the Mexican holiday, sending the crowd into laughter before he referred to the day correctly."Welcome to Cinco de Cuatro—Cinco de Mayo at the White House," said Obama, in what appeared to be an attempt to note they were celebrating on the fourth of May instead of the fifth.
Cinco de cuatro means "five of four" in Spanish.
This is the same Obama who went overseas and criticized the US to a European audience (anybody notice a pattern here?) cause we don't fluently speak multiple languages.
Hey, genius in the White House! I can do better than "cinco de cuatro".

ACORN in trouble:
ACORN voter registration drive nets charges
A voter registration drive last year illegally required canvassers to meet quotas to keep their jobs and resulted in thousands of “garbage” registrations gumming up Clark County voter rolls, officials said Monday as they released a criminal complaint against the drive’s organizers.
The complaint names the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN, as well as Chris Edwards, the group’s former Las Vegas field director, and Amy Busefink, who was regional director for voter registrationIn all, there are 26 charges of compensation for registration of voters and 13 charges of being a “principal” in the incident. An initial hearing has been set for 7:30 a.m. June 3 in Las Vegas Justice Court.
“In Nevada, it is unlawful for a person to provide compensation for registering voters that is based on the total number of voters a person registers,” said state Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto.
Anybody out there remember who was the community organizer-lawyer who trained ACORN on how to do their thing and get out the vote?

Volokh himself writes"
Now I suppose it's possible for teachers, both high school and college, to carefully avoid calling anything that might possibly be linked to a religious belief system "nonsense," and instead just say "it's scientifically unfounded" or some such (though wouldn't that be disapproval, too?). But that would make the discussion pretty artificial, with the teacher being constitutionally barred from saying what is pretty obviously on his mind. Nor would it be true to the principle that schools should be forthright about what's true and what's false: Do we really want high schools and universities to be places where one can't call astrology or voodoo bunk? And while in some classes the pedagogically superior practice would be to talk about why a particular belief system is indeed unfounded, that often won't be so: My class, for instance, wasn't a class about the scientific reasons why voodoo isn't going to work.

re: #50 zombie
Silk is mentioned in Pliny the Elder (1st century CE), so depending on exactly WHEN you got transported, you could get your silk. It was pricy though.
Pliny also mentions an amazing "flexible glass" that had all the regular glass makers pissed off so bad that Tiberius had the innovative "flexible glass" makers killed and their trade secret died. A cautionary tale of what happens when you introduce, say, plastics in a dictatorship that is more into the status quo than embracing new technology.

I haven't seen the actual ruling, but I'll ramble on anyway.
The statement that seems to have caused offense was "
religious
superstitious nonsense." If the reference to religion is the problem, then you would be OK. Legally. But it's hard to know without reading the judge's actual reasoning.
Meanwhile, I don't care for such responses, especially to children, who more often than not are actively trying to learn things. A better answer would be along the lines of, "There is no scientific evidence supporting that claim," which might open up a discussion of what constitutes evidence, hypothesis and reasoning from a scientific perspective, but doesn't directly criticize the person asking. It also puts the onus of providing actual evidence on that person, which is where it belongs - science isn't in the business of proving assertions to be false (a demand for negative proof, a favorite of creationists and oogie-boogie theorists everywhere) but rather is in the business of proving assertions to be true by applying the scientific method to the evidence.

Mark Twain's "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" was based upon this premise. As the time-transported hero is about to be burned at the stake in King Arthur's Court by an ignorant mob that thinks him a madman, he correctly predicts an eclipse of the sun using his almanac. That saves his life, and gets him viewed as a wizard.
He uses his modern knowledge of science and technology to greatly improve the standard of living in the primitive society. Over time, however, the forces of ignorance eventually overwhelm and defeat him. And in the end, even his advanced military technology (he builds machine guns to use against the knights who are attacking him), while slaughtering thousands, can't save him.
The book was written at the end of Twain's life, when he had grown very dark about human nature.

Iranian aircraft attacked three villages inside Iraq over the weekend. The airstrikes — Iran’s first on Iraqi soil since the U.S. invasion — could complicate the Obama administration’s efforts to normalize relations with Tehran. The Bush Administration appeared to toy with the idea of using PJAK against Iran. In August 2007, the leader of PJAK visited Washington, DC in order to seek more open support from the US both politically and militarily but it was later said that he only made limited contacts with officials in Washington. … In one of the first actions of the Obama administration, PJAK was declared a terrorist organization, freezing any assets the PJAK has under U.S. jurisdiction and prohibiting American citizens from doing business with the organization.
Obama’s decision to decisively cut loose the PJAK is probably driven by the desire to get in the good graces of both Turkey and Iran, for whom the Kurdish separatists are a bother. Until recently Teheran actually supported the PJAK’s predecessors against Ankara, according to some sources. But now both Turkey and Iran seem to have decided to jointly crack down on the PJAK

The book was written at the end of Twain's life, when he had grown very dark about human nature.

re: #41 Slumbering Behemoth
A comedian once made a similar observation. Paraphrasing:
"We're not smart, we just memorized a bunch of shit smart people figured out. Stick any one of us on a deserted island, with every advanced tool known to mankind, then come back in a thousand years. You'll find us running around naked, trying to catch fish with wooden spears".
Yeah they weren't dummies back then either. They obviously had their own technology. And to capitalize on your future knowledge it would seem you'd have to be ready to craft and fashion things by hand using ancient tools people today have no skills or knowledge of. I've always thought you could (assuming you could communicate effectively) look at processes and make improvements that would be obvious.
Like I don't think the romans used pockets. But then again they didn't have a lot of little things they carried around with them like later peoples (no watches, cell phones, pens were dipped in ink I would guess). Money probably specifically went in a leather pouch that you kept under your garment lest it be lifted. So some things we find useful today they might simply not.
You could maybe see ways to mass produce things that people hadn't thought of. Maybe harnessing water and wind more effectively.
It'd be tough and all the while you'd have to figure out how to feed yourself and where you could fit in. You may not even have the right in that society to speak to somone about improving something or they may think you're evil and kill you for impertinent suggestions or devilish inventions.
Nope I'd rather be transported to the early 20th century. Just get a job and invest in what you know's coming and get filthy rich!

[snip] Once you have that, you can then make parabolas of any curvature.
With those, easy enough to make parabolic mirrors. [snip]
A spherical surface is the easiest to fashion with glass or metal, because two spherical surfaces of the same curvature can remain in intimate contact as they slide over each other. A typical cheap mirror-type telescope will use a spherical mirror with a focal length about 10 times its diameter. F/10 in camera jargon. A small F/10 spherical mirror is such a close approximation to the ideal F/10 parabolic mirror that it is already near-perfect, optically.

The ID/Creationist/Darwin/Religion/Science threads have me thinking (...a dangerous pastime, I know):
People get really attached to their false dichotomies and spend an inordinate amount of time arging a side of an issue which doesn't have to be an issue. Examples:
Faith vs. Works in Christianity
Scientific Evidence vs. Faith in God (or a higher power)
Homosexuality vs. Heterosexuality (thanks Joe)
Limited Government vs. Compassion
Fiscal Responsibility vs. Capitalism
Values vs. Tolerence/Acceptance/Freedom to Choose
...the list could go on.
A common thread in all of these false choices seems to be a combination of a narrowly defined position that is defended to the exclusion of any additional information. Pride leading to willful ignorance.

Fox News has a big deal partner on now from the Law Firm of White & Case - a HUGE, OLD line law firm which is representing some of Chrysler's bondholders and other creditiors. He was invited on because he too said that some bondholders were receiving threatening calls from the WH. So after being introduced and stating he was the "Global Partner" for all the creditors of Chrysler, he was asked if it was true that some bondholders were receiving death threats. He said "I can't answer that"; when asked about his original statement about WH pressure on the bondholders he said "I can't answer that" and so on and so forth.
Death threats? For refusing to subordinate your personal debt from Chrysler to the government? Mind you this is America's prototypical "Corporate Lawyer" and frankly he looked scared - I wondered what the hell he was doing on Fox when I realized well, big law firm or not, methinks he just wanted to advertise the fact that His Law Firm (probably around 1,000 lawyers) was doing this work and then brag about himself being the Global Partner (meaning the guy running all of the law firms representing bondholders).
But he steadfastly refused to answer questions about WH threats, murder threats on himself and his family as well as on bondholders etc.
This damn class warfare crap had best stop NOW - most "bondholders" are retired folks or Pension Funds not the "feelthy rich" and at some point folks with more guts than this idiot are gonna resist.

Upon being escorted to hell a damned soul was escorted around the environs by a devil and informed he would have to choose one room in which to spend eternity.
The first room was filled with people getting their flesh burned off by fire and brimstone.
The second room was filled with people being flayed and tortured on all sorts of devices reminiscent of the inquisition.
The third room was filled with people standing up to their waist in a cesspool of rancid feces while drinking coffee.
The condemned said to the devil, "This room doesn't seem so bad. I choose it." The devil said - "So be it! Here is your eternal punishment." Grinning the damned soul entered in and grabbed a cup of coffee.
Just then another devil stuck his head in the door and said: "Coffee break is over, back on your heads!"
- Time to get back on my head! BBL

When I first heard Savage I thought he was batshit crazy and possibly slightly retarded. However, I now get his schtick and believe he's crazy like a fox. He's extremely educated and bright ( at least much more so than I).
I don't believe he would ever intend anyone to be hurt with his inflammatory language other then the jihadists that wish us all ill. But he does paint with a pretty wide brush lumping in red diaper baby liberals in with the terrorists as enemies and not just useful idiots. It's so wide though as to not be serious.
I think though the UK is merely throwing an appeasing bone to the jihadists (and their apologists) in their midst. They let Palestinian terror sympathizers chase their police around their downdown cities but Mke Savage is a threat. Whatever.
At any rate he'll have a field day with this.

A voter registration drive last year illegally required canvassers to meet quotas to keep their jobs and resulted in thousands of "garbage" registrations gumming up Clark County voter rolls, officials said Monday as they released a criminal complaint against the drive's organizers.
The complaint names the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN; Chris Edwards, the group's former Las Vegas field director; and Amy Busefink, who was regional director for voter registration.
In all, there are 26 charges of compensation for registration of voters and 13 charges of being a "principal" in the alleged crimes. An initial hearing has been set for 7:30 a.m. June 3 in Las Vegas Justice Court.
Lomax said he raised concerns about ACORN's voter registration drive in 2006. "I've been trying to get someone to do something about this for a while," he said.
Bonnie Greathouse, the head organizer at the Las Vegas office, said she was not worried about fallout from the charges.
"We've had bad publicity before, and all it does is inform the community that we're here working for the community," she said. "People always come forward to our defense.
"We're just community organizers, just like the president used to be."

More on Gates' attempts to reassure US allies on Iran:
US Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Tuesday there is "no grand bargain" with Iran as the United States tries to bolster relations with the Teheran government.Asked by reporters what kind of progress the US is hoping for with Iran, Gates said he didn't know what was possible.
The US is still waiting to see how the Iranians respond to President Barack Obama's outreach, Gates said, but so far the rhetoric from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been "not very encouraging."
Not very encouraging?
But there were also denials of a secret "grand bargain" between the US and Iran.
"But I think concerns out there of some kind of a grand bargain developed in secret are completely unrealistic."
I hadn't thought that would even be possible, but denials like this make me wonder.

And then there's Emanuel: Thwarting Iran easier with Israeli-Palestinian talks

Israeli TV stations had reported Monday night that Emanuel had actually linked the two matters, saying that the efforts to stop Iran hinged on peace talks with the Palestinians. The remarks were reportedly made in a closed-door meeting previous day with 300 major AIPAC donors on Sunday.

Hamas is now sounding like Fatah:
Hamas has stopped launching rockets at Israel and is looking to establish a Palestinian state along the 1967 borders, the Islamist group's political leader Khaled Mashaal told The New York Times in an interview published Monday. He went on to say that Hamas supported "a state on the 1967 borders, based on a long-term truce. This includes east Jerusalem, the dismantling of settlements and the right of return of the Palestinian refugees," specifying that by a "long-term" agreement he meant 10 years.
Of course, with the "return of the Paliterrorist refugees", by 10 years, Israel wouldn't be a Jewish state, and the 1967 borders are suicide even if "refugees" didn't return.
But this is enough to get the US, UN, and EU to pressure Israel even more to negotiate with Hamas, and even make a peace deal.

Also, BMI says the maps are holdovers from when those aircraft were used by another airline, BMED, that was catering to a primarily Muslim clientele. They say the maps were supposed to be fixed for the Tel Aviv route, but mistakenly were not.
Here's jpost's piece on this, as of April 30:

It also doesn't say Hamas would accept Israel as a Jewish state, even for those 10 years. And the hudna can be broken any time Hamas feels strong enough.
They might be admitting this in Arabic, but it is clear to anyone who has paid attention that Hamas is just saying this because they know that Israel has no protector any more, and the US will pressure Israel into accepting this slow suicide.

[snip] Once you have that, you can then make parabolas of any curvature.
With those, easy enough to make parabolic mirrors. [snip]
A typical cheap mirror-type telescope will use a spherical mirror with a focal length about 10 times its diameter. F/10 in camera jargon. A small F/10 spherical mirror is such a close approximation to the ideal F/10 parabolic mirror that it is already near-perfect, optically.
A spherical surface is the easiest to fashion with glass or metal, because two spherical surfaces of the same curvature can remain in intimate contact as they slide over each other. This is not true for any other shape surface, except flat.

I think it's pretty clear the entire Muslim world (not just jihadists) including it's expats in other countries has completely rejected the existence of a Jewish theocratic state in the ME. No discussion or compromise is possible.
I hate to say it but other than triggering WWIII what ultimately are Israel's options? The rest of the world has decided to let Iran have a bomb which I have no doubt they'll use either overtly or covertly thru terror channels.
I wonder if Israel should begin negotiating on terms of surrender soon. Never thought I'd say it but if we could have kept WMDs out of the hands of their enemies they could have continued but I don't see it now.
They should try and get their people out safely and or see if the victors will allow some sort of assimilation without having every last thing they own and control confiscated.

Of course, if you know how the formula for a parabola is derived, it's easy enough to work out. But given Zombie's example above, the easier solution might be to find a cone and cut it at an angle so that it's parallel to one "side". Also an easy parabola.

An attorney for the secured Chrysler creditors was on FNC this morning.
As secured creditors they trade off an expectation for high return for security. They agreed to take $0.50 on the dollar & yet BHO blames them for the bankruptcy & implies that they are unpatriotic.
How inappropriate is it for a president to act like this? No wonder he gets along with Chavez.
It's more than just inappropriate. It's smacks of classic tyranny. The secured creditors are first in line in a bankruptcy (after the lawyers and accountants). .50 on the dollar is a huge loss for these creditors who invested in Chrysler as a safe and secure investment. They are being jacked around and demonized in a thinly veiled threatening manner by our government. I. Do. Not. Like. It.

Sorry for that gloomy thought.
Gloomy isn't the essence of this post. VICTORS will allow...? without having every last thing they own and control confiscated? Like their freedom perhaps? Better to be a slave in a peaceful environment then a free man in a conflict? If you have no freedom, then the rest is meaningless. And if WWIII occurs because Iran gets the bomb that is Israel's fault? GIGO.....
I hope if the war comes to America, I am not standing behind you.............and I don't want to lead you either. You would slow me down thinking of alternative ways for me to surrender.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. I see that Obama's tax plan to close "loopholes" has pissed off the drug companies (to say nothing of any businesses that would see the Treasury Dept., headed by a tax cheat and the House Ways and Means headed by a tax cheat, claim that they're cutting down on "tax cheats").
At the same time, the Administration is claiming that the Scare Force One photos are classified and will not release them. Nonsense. We bought 'em. We want to see 'em (and want to see what the White House got for its little stunt that scared thousands of folks in and around the NYC metro area with its little flyby stunt).
Meanwhile, the Administration continues facing tests, and Pakistan looks like it needs to send a serious Swat team into Swat, because the situation is getting worse by the day.
And there's no reason to think that Obama's foreign policy is going to improve relations with Iran. They're busy looking at throwing Israel under the bus, and Iran is showing its contempt with attacking targets inside Iraq and meeting with Hamas thugs in Syria (with whom the US wants to expand relations with as well).
At the same time, Hamas now claims that they want a 10-year hudna, which should be seen as just that - and not a ceasefire or truce. Hamas wants the time to regroup and rearm with the latest and greatest technologies, and coordinating with Iran is the lynchpin. They are probably getting intel and information about what they need to do going forward.

No, the guy was not implying that death threats were coming from the White House, but from members of the public. This is an unintended consequence of BHO going with the public denounciation.
As far as Acorn, I see this as the tip of the iceberg. They got public money to be nonpartisan & register new voters. Clearly they favor Democrats & I doubt if they kowingly registered one Republican.

Obama Won't Release Air Force One New York Photos
The New York Post reported May 5 that photos of the president's plane flying low over New York will not be released to the public. An Obama aide is quoted as saying, "We have no plans to release them."Most transparent government ever, right? I guess that only applies if being transparent is bad for Republicans or former President Bush. Only positive information for the current administration, please. No dissenters allowed.

It was easy meat for the comedians, of course:
Did you see that, the 747 jet flying low over New York City? It caused a huge panic. Some government idiot thought it would be a good idea to buzz the city to get pictures of planes flying over the Statue of Liberty. But they didn’t warn anybody. What’s the government’s next big idea? "Hey, let’s send a guy in a pirate costume to Captain Richard Phillips’ house."

Bernanke contradicts B. of A.'s Lewis on Merrill
Federal Reserve Board chairman Ben Bernanke denied that he urged Bank of America chief executive Kenneth Lewis to hold back disclosure on the true extent of Merrill Lynch's coming fourth-quarter losses until after shareholders approved the bank's purchase of the troubled brokerage. "I absolutely did not in any way ask Mr. Lewis to obscure any disclosures or fail to report information he should be reporting," Bernanke told the Joint Economic Committee of Congress. Bernanke said he has offered Congress full access to all Fed records on the matter. The Fed chairman said he met Lewis in the presence of top Fed staffers. Lewis told New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo that Bernanke and then-Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson counseled Bank of America [s:BOA] against disclosing details about the financial condition of Merrill Lynch.

And we got nothing for it.
Change!
Alabama, huh? glad to know help is near-by if it is needed.

The tower used the call sign "Air Force One."
The pictures won't be released.
He was on the plane.
Discuss.
OK, here's the discussion. You are incorrect, he was not on the plane.

The pilots and flight crews got training from these flights. When I was in the Army, as a Huey Crew Chief, that was the catch all reason for doing something that might be perceived as wasteful, but I am only half joking here.
Something that is never reported is that there are quite a number of flights taken in Government aircraft for the sole purpose of maintaining certain proficiencies. Military pilots have a number of requirements that they must fulfill in order to maintain their flight status. It is likely that the Scare Force One episode involved much more than a joyride for the crews
Bitching about the cost is a red herring for this issue, since when you account for the other factors, like the training value, the cost of the photo shoot is significantly less than the headlines would have you believe. Of greater concern is the colossal hubris of the White House that has been demonstrated throughout this whole episode. Who is reporting on that?

There we go again. There was a gremlin character in the post at the top of the thread, gumming up the works.
So the problem started when we fed the thread after midnight?

If presidential terms were like visits to the dentist, Obama is still in the waiting room listening to the elevator music, with the drill yet to be turned on......Keep in mind that Obama has never really been tested. Life has been easy to him. He has achieved so much at such a tender age. He commands the American Congress and the global media. But such situations are ephemeral. The crises ahead will test him to a degree that perhaps even he himself, so thoughtful and deliberative, cannot yet imagine. And in the process we will all come to know him better.

The Air Force One stunt occurred around 10:30 AM, Monday, April 27th.
At shortly after 9:00 AM on Monday, April 27th, President Obama was giving a speech at the National Academy of Science in Washington.
And there's the proof; there's more than one "Obama".

Hell, Clinton was probably banging reporters half a dozen at a time. His time is valuable. He might as well make the most of it (I doubt, though, that Hillary ever set foot in the Presidential quarters on AF1).
I think the only time she did was to throw an ashtray.

Actually, the tower was mixing up that plane with the real AF-1, which at the time was a modified SR-71, that was taking Obama and George HW Bush to Iran to negotiate the release of hostages/destruction of Israel...

Yeah, this is more of a cluster-fuck than an actual coverup.
Upding for that. The buck stops at the POTUS's desk, so he needs to find out how the photo op was authorized.
