Federal funding rebuilt the I35 bridge- and this is what he thinks states should do?! There are people in Congress working to get money taxed from Minnesotans back to Minnesota, and this is what their Governor thinks of their efforts? That Minnesota doesn't need federal money? He was recovering from multiple strokes and stayed up all day and night on 9/11 to try to find out if his children living in NYC were ok.

My grandfather fought in World War II under Patton in the 3rd Army. He rejoined the Army after his original enlistment was completed in 1941. He was at Bastogne. He saw concentration camps with his own eyes and stepped foot in Berchtesgarten. I have "souvenirs" from the Eagle's Nest in my home. This was a true American Patriot who went and fought for his country, against the homeland his grandfather came to the US from in the 1860s. He went on to start a family and work his ass off for 40 years to provide for them.
He passed away May 25, 2001.
I was crushed and still miss him. There is one thing I am thankful for though. He did not have to live through both Pearl Harbor and 9/11, and did not have to see the 7 years of BDS and moonbattery that followed.

I thought I'd save my 9/11 memories on the thread Charles will provide for us tomorrow, but I'll share a little now.
I woke up late that morning, jumped in and out of the shower, and turned the TV on to catch the weather. I saw a tower with smoke pouring out of it. I thought- holy hell. Then I saw the second plane strike. Just like that. My first thought was this was intentional, and I needed to go vote immediately because that's exactly what these bastards were trying to stop- freedom and democracy. Ten minutes later, I gave a finger to those fuckers, and cast a ballot.
I will never forget.

We're not there looking for specific targets but targets of opportunity and regional stability like in the Swat Valley. Then you have to take into account that Pakistan and India have been attempting to stabilize the region for decades now. India last wanted to nuke Pakistan. Afghanistan is a major producer of opium which is sold in the United States and Hamid Karzai's brother is drug lord and many consider him "Taliban Lite." It's not that easy.

It's September, and people are still acting like they're on a campaign.
Like they still have a few more weeks to block Obama's run for the White House or something. The other day I saw a Prius with a Gore 2000 bumper sticker, and I knew it wasn't just the GOP that suffers from nostalgia.
As 2009 transitions from a summer spent, and a winter earned, I look to changing leaves, the first snowfall, and finally being afforded "two-thousand-and..." becoming "twenty-...".
But Twenty-Ten will be an election year.
There is no respite.
A needle in my vein would provide a lesser fix; when pitted against our political climate.

I remember. It was the first week of 9th grade for me, at a new school. We had moved from Fresno a year ago and I barely knew anyone, so starting 9th grade at a private school was nerve-racking. I usually woke up at 7am or so to get ready to go to school, but on that day, something weird happened. Almost sensing a disturbance, I shot right out of bed at 6am. I turned the TV on and saw the first tower immersed in smoke and flames. Almost immediately, I saw plane #2 go in. I was young and naive, so I didn't immediately think we were under attack, but I did wonder what the hell was going on. Shocked, I got ready for school.
On the drive to school, my ears were peeled to the radio, on the freeway in the midst of rush-hour LA traffic. I remember distinctly hearing the words "World War III" and right there it hit me that this was no ordinary event. Obviously I didn't think it was before but that term held a lot of power.
I remember going to an assembly that day which was scheduled anyway. It was like a welcome thing, but it ended up turning into a makeshift discussion forum. I remember one of the teachers who was from NY getting up to speak.
I remember my teachers generally not caring about what was going on. I only got to watch TV in one classroom, my history class. My English teacher was a super bitch, and forced us to write in our journals instead of watch what was happening. She was soon fired for that transgression as well as others.
As soon as I got home, I was able to settle in and watch the news. Shocked, dismayed, angered, confused, I watched. I was terrified about what had happened and what was to come.
I'll never forget it. NEVER. Worst non-familial day of my life, and changed the world forever.

The piece: Is America coming apart? is, for about 80% of it's length, just a laundry list of issues about which Americans argue, both among "social" issues and fiscal/theoretical issues. E.g., abortion, evolution, etc.

The victims in the World Trade Center, the military men, the people in Iraq, and Afghanistan. When I look at a dead soldier, a young healthy man online in recent days from Afghanistan. The British soldiers and the many others.
The weeks before I caught interest in the plight of women in Afghanistan. Started inquiring and sending out emails. It was at the height of Taliban activity and had already been seeing the so called Taliban "justice."

The piece: Is America coming apart? is, for about 80% of it's length, just a laundry list of issues about which Americans argue, both among "social" issues and fiscal/theoretical issues. E.g., abortion, evolution, etc.

I'm reading Why Darwin Matters- and towards the end Shermer discusses behavioral evolution- how things like morality might have naturally arisen in humans over the course of our evolutionary history. It's theorized that we learned altruism because humans would have been living in smaller groups long before civilizations started and that it could been seen by the tribe how helping one helped the many. We learned cooperation with each other.
But evolution also has it's darker side. We also were faced with competition. It's possible that 'fear of the other' extends well back in our behavioral evolution based on competition with other tribes, which is why it's still too easy to give in to the fear of people different than ourselves. We actually have to work against our nature.
I think by and large, most people in this country have no such fear of others, but those that do are making their presence more know at this time than at any other time in the last few decades. It's wrong of course. Part of me also wonders if the fight against evolution goes beyond religion and touches on origins. That in the end, despite our physical differences, we are all one family. Racists can't have that.

Sorry, but this is not complete true.
The V-1 had a small propeller and a counter, they set a specific number of revolutions to the point when this thing stopped the engine and the V-1 started its final approach.
It was not very precise because you would need a constant speed, good knowledge about the weather, headwind and things like that.
But usually they do not just feel out of the air because they where out of propellant.

The way I read it it just raised the question if Homo Erectus evolved in eastern Europe/Asia and returned to Africa, or evolved in Africa and spread from there. Human evolution is the most difficult lineages of all to track down. It is still not clear if Neandertalis is a separate species from Homo sapiens.

+ two entries on problems abroad: (1) link to a photo essay on Burma which has a definite human rights slant, and (2) a link to an article about blood diamonds, which is again a human rights issue.
+ an entry on Rushdie's problems over his infamous book.
So, geekiness, art, cycling, human rights, and free speech issues.
Doesn't seem like much has changed to me.

I just knew it because I grow up in a town that was located near the concentration camp where they build this thing and its bigger brother the V2/A4 in the last years of the war in an underground factory.
Besides being interested in planes and rockets since I was a small child I visited this Camp just around 2 weeks ago once again and attended a special tour with a very competent guide.

And that the 30 Treasury bonds had more buyers than expected this auction, dropping the yield from 4.289% expected to 4.238% actual. I don't want to tie up my money for 30 years at less than 5%, but I'm awfully glad that someone does.
And that there is a competitor for the Roomba. No, not just a broom, an actual other robot vacuum. My sister has painted her Roomba to look like a ladybug. I need to ask her if her cat is afraid of a Roomba, since most all cats are afraid of regular vacuum cleaners. All I can figure is, somewhere some cat was sucked up into a vacuum, and word got around in catland.

Good morning all. I just skimmed through the last thread and saw the carnage. WIll catch up on this one over coffee. I consider myself an independent who crosses leftward or rightward depending on the issue, probably somewhat more left of Charles on several things. And I think it puts me rather more to the left of the average poster here. However, one thing this place has never been in my limited experience is "lefty". That it wasn't right fringe was the reason I started reading and the reason I wanted to sign up. The owner's respect for science, facts, and verification is as high or higher than on most any other blog I've seen, much less anything right of center. Any de-linking that takes place over ideological dick-sizing is a loss to the de-linker.
Just saying.

I think it's fair to say there has been a change in the topics LGF covers, particularly since the election, but it's entirely consistent to be pointing out the unsavory associations and irrational views of some on "the right" after eight years of pointing out the unsavory associations and irrational views of those on "the left" (which LGF continues to do).
It's what was once called journalism. The legacy media should try it sometime.

Three miles north of where we were. We could see the smoke from the office. We walked out at lunch and could smell it.

Actually, the U.S. Navy was developing cruise missiles in the late 1940s. They noticed that most of the problems with using even a primitive cruise missile like the Fieseler-103 (the actual name of the V-1 "buzz bomb) didn't apply to their missions. Plus, they'd had first-hand experience of what is was like to be on the receiving end of "cruise missile"- type attacks during the Japanese Kamikaze (Divine Wind) suicide attack campaign that culminated at Okinawa. Cruise missiles offered the same potential as an anti-ship weapon without risking the lives of aircrew, and also the missiles worked very well in wavetop-level attacks which made them hard for enemy radar top spot in time to shoot them down or evade them. (Ask a radar technician about how short the range of a typical air-defense radar of that era was vs. a target coming in "on the deck", sometime.)
Besides the Regulus II program, the Navy had the Rigel, Triton, and Regulus I cruise missile programs in the strategic (long-range attack) department, and the Loon (an American copy of the Fi-103), Petrel, Kingfisher, Gorgon, and Gargoyle missile projects, in both air-to-surface and surface-to-surface cruise missile persuasions, in the tactical (anti-ship/shore-bombardment) department, and all between 1945 and 1960. In spite of all this research, a "policy" decision at the JCS level kept the Navy out of the cruise missile business until the late 1970s, because the Pentagon types didn't think cruise missiles were as "survivable" in combat as ballistic missiles. Plus, the Air Force early on didn't want the Navy "poaching" on their turf beyond the Polaris/Poseidon SLBM programs- "offensive" missiles were their toys, not the blackshoes'. (Not to mention the carrier admirals who considered naval strike their exclusive province with the flattops.)
What finally changed everyone's minds was apparently when they noticed that the Soviet Navy put cruise missiles on every platform they had for the express purpose of sinking our ships, especially the carriers. Which meant, as usual, we had to play catchup. We're just lucky that the Tomahawk and Harpoon turned out to be darned near perfect as designed.
The early advocates of cruise missiles in the U.S. navy got the last laugh, though. Probably more Tomahawks have been fired in anger in the last thirty years than any other missile in history... with the possible exception of the old V-1 "buzz bomb", that is.

I have to wonder just how much of that is envy and people happily taking the chance to stick a knife in his back and twist it. Some of it is about the right's collapse and increasing demands for ideological purity, even if the ideology is one of purest crazy, but I think some of these nasty people secretly have always been jealous of Charles and of LGF.
It really is shocking. I've seen a lot of pileons in the political blogosphere on both sides but never something like this. Something like this would never happen on the left side of the blogosphere either, where no-one ever agrees with anyone anyway.

Great question. Don't know that I have an answer but it seems A-stan is going to be a difficult nut to crack. My guess is, the longer we stay and get nothing accomplished in terms of improving the lives of ordinary Afhans then I believe you are correct. If we leave without eliminating the Taliban then that is the oppostie side of the same coin. I think we need a more significant commitment with a longer-term plan, and resolve, than we have now.

The points that our successive administrations (of both parties) seem to keep missing are;
1. "Nation building" and "enemy suppression" are two entirely different missions, and you have to decide which you are more interested in up front. Ideally, you do the "nation-building" thing after you're reasonably sure most of the actual enemy is "suppressed" (i.e., dead).
2. Even if you do manage to reach the "nation-building" stage, doing it in a tribalist/clan-based culture where memories are long and grudges transcend generations is never going to be easy. Mainly due to the large number of people who hate each other even though none of them can remember exactly why.
The British had the right idea about Afghanistan; as long as the locals kept their feuds on their side of the border, and out of British India, the Raj didn't care what they did. The trouble is, in the modern world, that mindset is probably no longer viable.
Even if the various bad actors never leave the country physically, there's always the Internet. I mean, who would have believed a hundred years ago that I'd be typing something like this in Ohio, and it was being read by people whose locations I don't even know?
I'm not saying there isn't a "solution" to Afghanistan. Just that finding one is not going to be a fast or easy process. The trouble is, our various administrations for the most part seem to have been in what I call "TV" mode- they want everything wrapped up by the last commercial break. Ain't. Gonna. Happen.
President Bush realized this. I'm not so sure President Obama does.

Great question. Don't know that I have an answer but it seems A-stan is going to be a difficult nut to crack. My guess is, the longer we stay and get nothing accomplished in terms of improving the lives of ordinary Afhans then I believe you are correct. If we leave without eliminating the Taliban then that is the oppostie side of the same coin. I think we need a more significant commitment with a longer-term plan, and resolve, than we have now.
Obama has committed more troops there. He made a sizable commitment-- but warned that military presence alone wouldn't be sufficient.

He sent more than Bush. He hasn't ruled out sending more. IIRC we're on track to have double the amount there by dec 2009 than we did when Bush left office.
Will is not the only person on the right to suddenly have reservations about troop deployment to Afghanistan, after years of supporting every military decision Bush made, pushing for more military involvement always, and insinuating that Obama would be weak on defence.
It is hard to escape the conclusion that some of those pundits (perhaps not Will) planned to attack Obama if he didn't deploy troops, and are now attacking him because he did.

Here in OH, I was up, finishing my second cup of coffee, and getting ready to go off to my charity work (paper drive that day) when the Fox News crew said an airliner had hit one of the towers. don't ask me why, but I hit "record" on the VCR hooked up to the satellite TV dish, shoved a second (blank) tape in the one hooked to the rooftop broadcast antenna, and hit "record' on it, too, thus getting both Fox News and NBC.
I took off in my Jeep, listening to the radio (Fox News, again), and got to my best bud, the E-5's, house just in time for him to say, "One of the towers just collapsed." we went on to "business as usual", but with the radio on the rest of the day.
What struck me was how unsurprised I was. The E-5 said it best; "They (the terrorists) have been telling us they were going to hit us for years, and they did it." my response was, "Maybe now somebody on our side, at the command level (meaning NCA) will finally realize that the terrorists were serious when they said they were in 'a state of war' against us."
Going back to my last post, Bush got it. I'm pretty sure Obama thinks it was just "rhetoric". Not realizing that in the Islamic world, the original definition of that word is still current- not "words intended to convince without really meaning them", but "a message stating one's intentions clearly and unequivocally."
The moral being, you should always honor a threat. ("Honor" as in "Take It Seriously".)

It was never clear to me whether the mainline LDP really wanted to totally give up the Article 9 provision; however, they were the party of those who had some very, very direct links to the WWII era, and were very much interested in using the US relationship as the bulwark in their China policies.
The DPJ is probably more receptive, it appears, to being more of a business-centric policy machine. What is good for trade will be good for Japan, so to speak. Foreign policy hawks tend not to be so much like that.
On many issues I doubt if us outsiders could tell a difference between the DPJ and the LDP.

Absolutely. I pointed out just yesterday that there are dishonest people on the left too who pretended to care about the erosion of civil liberties and the unprecedented expansion of executive power under Bush, yet are now mysteriously silent when Obama continues and even extends those policies.
Those are my very special enemies, btw. Believe it or not, the vast majority of my ire is directed at the people allegedly on my own side-- not on the right. It's just that you don't often get to see that here, because lefty criticisms of Obama and the left aren't the ones that are usually under discussion here-- though i try to throw them in where appropriate.

I hadn't heard about that one. If true, it doesn't surprise me (unfortunately). In the past, I've had just enough contact with "government employee" unions to have as profound a distrust of same as I do of some of the elements of the UMW and Teamsters.
/Hint; if UMW "enforcers" mistake you for a "scab" because you and said individual drive nearly-identical cars, a 1911 makes a much better argument for not getting stomped into the pavement than trying to convince them of your true identity with your driver's license. As for memory holes in general, I think it's important to note when things change or disappear, but the concept of "sweeping things under the rug" is something I find odd in the internet era. Anyone who's net savvy knows that almost anything that goes up on the net gets archived, and can be recalled. The question I want to ask is, if a politician or any other entity puts something up that they regret, or change their mind about, or want to retract, what are they supposed to do? Leave the page up with a big "Update: We don't mean this anymore" notice? Replace it with a 404 type page saying "We've taken this page down because we made a mistake?". What would be the proper etiquette for removing a controversial thing from a website?

It was eight years ago. Eight years since our new reality was created. On that fateful day, September 11th, 2001, our freedom was attempted to be stripped from us. Because of those four planes, terrorists, and thousands of American lives lost, we now live in a new reality. A reality which we did not necessarily choose to live in, but one to which we are now obliged for the rest of our lives. It is a reality under a new threat that had never before been realized. There's a daily reminder of September 11th, 2001. In the news, in our minds. The images play in my mind constantly. So many people lost their lives on that day, for the sole reason that they were American. American, just like you and I, trying to provide an honest living for their families--taking the OPPORTUNITIES that our country had given them to do so. Terrorists have attempted to take what we have fought for, what we have paid for with our blood, sweat and tears over centuries, but we have risen stronger and fiercer. This new threat is indeed too real, but what is also real is the resolve of the American people. That resolve is greater than anything, and is one of the things that make me so proud to be an American.
Since that day, many measures have been taken to prevent another, possibly more catastrophic event from taking place. We must realize the threat, and we must be aware. People assume that they are now safe from evil because seven years have passed. They think that it's okay to act hesitantly and react rather than act. That should not be the case, and is a dangerous line of thinking.
We cannot live the way we did before, because if we forget the lessons learned from September 11th, 2001, history will repeat itself. We MUST come together and realize the true enemies. WE MUST fight together as one nation, rather than sit here and fight amongst ourselves. We must NEVER relent, and never give up. We must NEVER fall into a false sense of security. This is what the enemy wants, and being apathetic, oblivious, and careless will only validate their ultimate goals.
Over the last year and a half, we have lost sight of the importance in fighting against this enemy. Instead, our daily thoughts are with the economic situation that has plagued the world. While focusing on these problems is important, giving too much attention and not enough to a regrouping and still-very-alive threat is perilous, reckless, and potentially very destructive. With a new administration in tow, I can only hope that the importance of strong foreign policy is not lost upon them, and that they will continue to do whatever it takes to keep this nation and its’ people safe from further attack.
After all, as Ronald Reagan once said, "Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children what it was once like in the United States where men were free."
I feel personally attacked, offended, and hurt every day that some factions of people want to kill ME and destroy MY country, simply because I am an American.
They may have broken our hearts, but they will never, EVER, break our spirit.

All my attention to language in the health care proposal has been to the two available versions, HR 3200 and "‘‘America’s Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009."
Those two proposals do have language about aliens...
3 SEC. 246. NO FEDERAL PAYMENT FOR UNDOCUMENTED
4 ALIENS.
5 Nothing in this subtitle shall allow Federal payments
6 for affordability credits on behalf of individuals who are
7 not lawfully present in the United States.
I have know that there are other proposals floating around, at least 4 in the Senate, but I have not found them for public consumption.
It's possible that these other proposals DO NOT have the above language or anything that would deny health care benefits to aliens.
So, possibly we are NOT getting the whole picture. See this article...

a couple of months ago I learned that my wife's boss here in chicago had a niece who was one of the murdered on 9-11 and that her son-in-law lived only a block from the WTC. Her mother said the smell was the same smell she remembered from when she was in Dachou.

Most Lizards know, I've been keeping up close with the health care stuff, and right or wrong, I try to bring what appears to be truth to the table on LGF.
It annoys me that the donks in Washington are talking and debating and pontificating from one set of rules while we have something different out in the boonies.
Why are not ALL versions, all proposals, all the same material they have available to us?
I any Lizards know of links to anything beside HR 3200 and the newer version "America’s Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009" please let me know. I have these.

Probably not, actually. I would guess you are a little more Whiggish about it than I am, but I don't personally know what the balance really should be, and find myself on different sides of different issues. Federal/State rule is one of the fundamental American balancing acts, after all.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. As many of you know, I was in NYC on 9/11 and worked just about a mile north of Ground Zero. I now work across the street, and Ground Zero has become quite a tourist destination - a place where people see the visceral effects of terrorism and mass murder on an unimaginable scale.
Since 9/11, I've followed the efforts to first recover the victims, then the efforts to figure out what to do with the site, and now with the reconstruction efforts. It has gone far slower than it should have - all the infighting and incompetence from politicians who wanted soundbites instead of delivering leadership - that includes NY and NJ governors, the Port Authority, Mayor Bloomberg, local politicians and even the US Senators from New York.
While the effort was made initially to make sure that whatever funds were needed to rebuild, the current construction efforts are hobbled because of the credit market meltdown, which threatens to stall reconstruction of 3 of the office towers planned at the site.
Still, there has been significant progress since last year. Much of the steel for the 9/11 memorial and museum has been installed, and the Freedom Tower now rises above Ground Zero in the NW corner of the site. 4WTC is slowly rising from the SE corner. There is activity all over the site, but it may be a decade or more before the whole site is built out. And I will do my best to catalog and detail those efforts along the way. I may have to cut it by November. Our Christmas show at the theatre where I work is "Wonderful Lfe" placed in a radio studio, with 5 actors doing 120 different characters and a stage manager/sound effects guy on stage doing the special effects.
They may take me out of my tech booth and throw me on stage to play the 6th character, the stage manager. The 1940's and long hair won't work. Cut it.

Here is another local article I found from a local NBC affiliate: Owosso High School Remains on Lockdown
The Owosso High School is on lockdown until further notice.
The entire school district was put on lock down early this morning, after an anti-abortion activist was shot multiple times and killed outside the High School. The Elementary, Middle, and Alternative Ed school have been taken off the lockdown. The High School students should be addressed soon.
NBC25 is told he was a well-known anti-abortion activist in the city of Owosso and stands in very visible areas with large graphic anti-abortion signs.
The interim superintendent, Susan Wooden says he was also well known at the High School where he would stand most mornings while students walked into school.
Police have informed Wooden they do have someone in custody at this time.

I looked more into it. It's Conyers and Kucinich, wacky time, this is not what I am looking for.
There are currently at least 4 more CURRENT versions of proposals floating around, and I can't seem to find copies, yet it is these other proposals that Joe Wilson was talking about when he said it did allow illegal aliens to receive benefits.
His method may have been stupid and suspect, but his info may not have been skewed.
I want those proposals.
We are not being given the whole story.

States' rights was a really big issue for Republicans and southern Democrats in the 50's and 60's. By coincidence, this coincided with the civil rights era. We don't hear so much from Republicans about states' rights in regard to over issues for some reason, i.e., medical marijuana.

States' Rights was the traditional rallying cry of those who sought to keep the Feds from screwing with their local concepts of civil rights (or lack thereof).
