What Right Wing Extremist Violence?

US News • Views: 6,422

A member of the far right sovereign citizen movement (and quack mortgage adviser) and his son were shot to death yesterday in Memphis in a gun battle with police, in which two police officers were also killed: Relatives ID West Memphis suspects.

A background search using the information from the website shows a Jerry Kane, born in Ohio in December of 1964 and most recently associated with addresses mainly in Ohio. The van, which authorities said had Ohio tags, was traced to New Vienna, Ohio, and a church called House of God’s Prayer, according to several sources.

That church’s address is associated with a deceased white supremacist named Harold R. Redfeairn, who the Associated Press reported in 2003 headed a chapter of the Church of Jesus Christ Christian in New Vienna. That church espoused views of the white-supremacist doctrine of Aryan Nations.

A story published by the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Ala., on Redfeairn has the headline, “The Cop-Shooter.” The story said that in 1979, Redfeairn shot 22-year-old Dayton, Ohio, police officer Dave Koenig three times after Koenig had stopped him.

Where else do we find Jerry Kane on the web? Why, at Glenn Beck’s “9/12 Project” website, of course: Two exceptional nights with Jerry Kane! - successes surrounding Foreclosure & Credit Card Debt along with several interesting technologies! - The 9/12 Project (New York, NY) - Meetup.com. (Hat tip: KT.)

In other violent wingnut news today, a female census resister in Yuba City was shot to death by police when she pointed a shotgun at them and ignored orders to put it down: Woman shot, killed in Yuba City home.

A woman was shot by two police officers late Thursday in south Yuba City after she approached them with a shotgun and refused to put down her weapon, according to a department press release.

Victoria Helen Roger-Vasselin, 67, was shot by two Yuba City officers and pronounced dead at the scene.

Police were called to the 700 block of Mariner Loop after a U.S. Census worker was confronted by residents who pointed a firearm at the worker and said they would not answer any questions.

When officers arrived, a man identified as Lionel Patterson, 51, answered the door armed with a handgun. As the officers dealt with him, Roger-Vasselin approached with a shotgun and ignored the officers’ orders to put down the weapon. She advanced and continued to point the shotgun at the officers in a threatening manner, at which point the officers fired their service weapons.

Here's something from one of his posts at the 9/12 project:

Our Christian Founding Fathers did the same. Ben Franklin said in his autobiography, "…the inability of the colonists to get the power to issue their own money permanently out of the hands of King George III and the international bankers was the prime reason for the revolutionary war.”

An interesting tidbit about the White Supremacist church van....

It cannot be proven the gunmen are tied to the Aryan group, but the van used by the suspects in this shootout was never reported stolen. The vehicle’s plates were renewed last summer, and set to expire next month.

The suspect's ties to Alex Jones and the "patriot" movement makes it pretty possible he was affiliated with the church at one point.

Former Springfield man suspected in deaths of two police officers

A former Springfield man and his son are suspected in the Thursday, May 20, shooting deaths of two West Memphis, Ark., police officers.

Memphis media have reported that a man and his 16-year-old son were suspected to have opened fire on two West Memphis, Ark., police officers Thursday, killing both. The two suspects were later shot to death after a police manhunt through the Memphis, Tenn., area that left two more law enforcement officers wounded.

Family members told the Memphis Commercial Appeal that the dead are Jerry Kane, 44, and his son Joseph and that they are from Ohio.

Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly Friday said Kane and his son formerly lived in Springfield.

Jerry R. Kane Jr., of XXXX S. Limestone St., Springfield, 44, has a son Joseph, according to Clark County court records. That house has been demolished and is a vacant lot.

Jerry R. Kane, Jr. is the perp not Jerry A.

I'm going to put my hands in my pockets.

Yeah, I don't think ex-professor Jerry Kane is the same as ex-shooter Jerry Kane either. There are some similarities but Kane the ex-prof doesn't say anything about traveling around giving mortgage advice or the recent arrest in New Mexico.
(According to Kane's memorial site, which is indisputably about the shooter, he was arrested in New Mexico three months ago for not having a driver's license.)

Ha! She's a malpractice attorney!

From her firm's page:

"In working in the medical malpractice, educational, and criminal justice areas, we became more and more aware of the systemic conditioning of numerous people in at least four generations of Americans. We are endeavoring to correct these misconceptions through several business ventures and non-profit organizations. We have created two for-profit corporations that fund several non-profits entities addressing social ills and reforms.

There seems to be no end to the oppression of the little guy by big corporations, runaway government, insurance companies, and pharmaceutical conglomerates--it seems that so many organizations are set up today simply to take advantage of the unequal bargaining power of the individual.

We are actively helping individuals get their finances in order to avoid these pitfalls and to help others learn to avoid injury and loss. We are losing our FREEDOMS more and more each day because so many people have been shackled with debt, demoralized, and disenfranchised. When citizens of any country are debt-ridden, demoralized, and disenfranchised the entire fabric of the country suffers as a result. re: #75 Guanxi88

Not by a long-shot, pardon the pun. Whacky lady, irrespective of politics; who the hell tries to run down a cop at a courthouse?

More on her:

According to Texas Lawyer, medical malpractice attorney Carolyn M. Barnes was arrested Tuesday for shooting at a census worker who knocked on the door of her house. Barnes told the worker, Kathleen Gittel, to leave, but Kathleen didn't have enough pep in her step, so Barnes fired off five rounds "in [Gittel's] direction."

I guess it could have been worse, Barnes could have eaten Gittel's liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti.

Barnes, despite being a civil litigator, is no stranger to the inside of a jailhouse. As this article from the Austin American-Statesman details, Barnes was arrested in January for attacking a deputy who told her she couldn't bring a knife into the Travis County courthouse.

Also, in 2000, Barnes, as part of an ongoing dispute about a traffic ticket, threatened to "fight to the death" if authorities attempted to arrest her on a traffic warrant, stating that "This is why people bomb governmental offices, kill cops, and kill judges because of all the lies and abuses!" In discussing that dispute as part of her subsequent run for a seat on a local school board, she noted that, in her 17 years of practicing law, she "ha[d]n't shot anybody yet, not even come close." So much for that campaign slogan.

Why must the law go into a firefight with popguns? This sort of gun battle should be conducted with Javelin missiles. Well, one of the reasons the Germans did not actually reach Moscow was because the Luftwaffe was unable to provide air superiority over Moscow that November and December. And part of the reason for that was Yak fighters flying CAP over Moscow.

(It was not until 1943 that the Red air force prevailed generally on the eastern front. Weaknesses in pilot training and doctrine held back the Red air force for the first few years of the war. Special circumstances unique to the battle of Moscow allowed the fundamentally weaker Red air force to contest the skies over Moscow: the Germans were operating from open air grass strips while the Russians had the civilian and military infrastructure of Moscow's airports. Heated hangars, for instance.

My favorite memo ever was my infamous gotterdammerung report; it laid out the concrete steps we;d have to take in the event that a proposed new state regulation kicked it. In cool detail, it laid out the time-table for the disposition of all affairs and effects, right down to forecasts of costs associated with removing our signage, probable salvage value of furnishings, etc.

The thing was so damned alarming the boss ordered all copies returned to her in person, along with a signed statement from those who had received it that they retained no copies - hard or digital - and had not transmitted, or permitted or caused to be transmitted, in any form, any portion thereof.

A new confidentiality agreement included a provision requiring denial of knowledge of the existence of any document that was not published by the organization.

I think he more means why are people upset about being ASKED the questions, not what it's purpose is

That stated, you are accurate as to the purpose. MY question would be why beyond number and ages of people residing in a house are there any OTHER questions on the form or the door to door
Number of people,, CHECK
Ages,, CHECK (for obvious things ,,, minors to ensure there are enough school resources ,, elderly so there are enough facilities around your town/ county,, adults to see size of district for voting purposes) But what does your gender have to do with how much the feds will give your county for road work, or what does your race matter to determine if the feds are kicking in for a new senior citizens center?

174 Almost Killed by Space Hookers  Fri, May 21, 2010 1:24:13pm

OK so lets make a rundown of the current state of affairs.

1. In the USA, the American right has been infested with medieval, nativist, racist and anti-government threads. We see this from the Texas board of education to Rush, to much of the GOP leadership.

2. These threads are more and more openly racist and they hearken to the same mix of white victimization, a nation stolen by others, conspiracy theory and appeals to a mythical past that never was, that formed the core of the Nazi message in Germany a mere 70 years ago. It all adds up to channeling and focusing anger, even if the people getting riled up are not so clear on the issues they are so very angry about.

3. Powerful corporate groups are glommed onto this because there is a message of letting corporations do as they please assosciated with it. We see this from Drill baby drill, to Rand Paul thinking that BP is not to be stepped on to those who believe that the civil rights act went too far. We see a major media outlet giving these distorted views of reality vastly disproportionate air time while mixing in a healthy does of lies, distortions and utter fantasy.

3. In the mean time, the semi sane party, is powerless to stop the nuclear threat from Iran, ride herd over its own membership to accomplish much of anything efficiently, and still has yet to address AGW.

4. In the mean time, the latest data on AGW shows that the problem is drastically accelerating. We may not know where the tipping points are, but we are surely marching towards them and at a faster rate than previously expected.

5. In the mean time, wedge issues and nonsense dominate. Kagan is not a lesbian. Even if she were, it would not matter. Yet, things like that are more important than looking at things like policy.

6. In the mean time, the damage done to our coast by the BP disaster spreads and is producing a polluted zone larger than Texas. There is still no fix. There is still no evidence that anyone had a fix in mind. There is overwhelming evidence once and for all that the myth that corporations will manage risks well themselves is completely debunked. They were under great pressure to get it done faster. They ignored pieces of the blow out preventer coming up to the surface. They pushed on. They ignored, problems with the cement seals, they pushed on. They ignored that one of their back up mechanisms to shut down a flow was not functional, and they had the other one hooked up to a dead battery. They pushed on. As of now, BP is more interested in shifting liability and trying to re-coup profits than it is on actually cleaning the mess.

7. As of now it is business us usual in DC. The weak and spineless Dems are not crucifying those who deserve to be crucified over this. They are not addressing the abominable law in AZ. They are not really doing anything.

8. The party of no in the meantime and their mouth pieces are spinning fast enough to give off light however and blaming everyone but themselves for yet another case of dodging regulations and enabling corporations to do so led to disaster. Shall we also remember Enron, or the S&L crisis? And yet, they still claim to be the financially responsible one.

9. As of now we still have not updated our power grid even though studies going back to the seventies have called for it and detailed the economic benefits of it.

10. As of now, we still have not addressed primary care provider inoculations and rapid vaccination deployment in the case of a major outbreak. This even though the medical community has been shouting about it since the Eighties.

11. Did I mention that right now there are three Americans in Irani custody?

12. As of now, while theocrats try to destroy our constitution and libertarians try to roll back Civil Rights,- something that the theocrats are OK with, very little is done to address these things.

13. However, I understand a new starlet has breasts. That is obviously more important.

That is not a bad idea at all.
Sometimes kids are just not cognitively ready for school when we put them in school and it really begins to show up in fourth grade when much more independent reading, homework and self control is required.

If we had sent the teen to school I would have waited till he was 6ish or 7 years old.

The unrest and unease is about the rubbish meme that the census is just more government oppression, and the evil socialists in Washington finding out something about you so they can tax you/oppress you/take your guns/force you into re-education/some other made up crap. That is the vast majority of this ridiculous opposition to something as innocuous as a census. And this opposition exists because the 'all government is bad' meme resonates most strongly with those who are angry solely because the President has a (D) after his name.

Mandy - this is not a terrible thing.

One of my nephews was held back in 3rd grade. One of the best things that could have happened.

At my daughter's school, they assessed kids before letting them into kindergarten. Placement in regular K or what they called (unfortunately) "developmental K", depended on the maturity of the kid, not how smart he/she is/was.

Look at it as you planning for and seeing to the best possible outcome for your son, not whether he's been "held back" for whatever reason.

If it's still an option, summer school can often effect an attitude adjustment in a hurry. Kids will often equate the loss of most of their free summer time as a more effective motivator than almost anything else. It's also an immediate consequence, which helps pound in the lesson. Good luck.

The Allied aid that really helped the Red Army win the war were the 250,000 trucks (many of them Studebakers) that allowed the Soviets to maintain a supply line to keep the advance rolling all the way to Berlin

Judges Rule Against Detainees Held at Afghan Air Base
By CHARLIE SAVAGE
Published: May 21, 2010

WASHINGTON — A federal appeals court ruled on Friday that prisoners being held without trial in Afghanistan by the military have no right to challenge their imprisonment in American civilian courts. The decision, overturning a lower court ruling in the detainees’ favor, was a victory for the Obama administration’s efforts to hold terrorism suspects overseas for extended periods without judicial oversight.

In a unanimous 26-page ruling, a panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ruled that detainees who were captured outside of Afghanistan and brought to a military prison at the Bagram air base have no right to a hearing in which a judge would review the evidence against them and could potentially order their release.

Such habeas corpus rights do “not extend to aliens held in executive detention in the Afghan theater of war,” wrote David B. Sentelle, the chief judge of the appeals court, who was appointed by former President Ronald Reagan. His opinion was joined by Judges Harry T. Edwards, a Carter appointee, and David S. Tatel, a Clinton appointee....

One of the issues is his emotional immaturity. He's always been the youngest in his classes. Maybe I should've kept him in pre-school an extra year. Maybe I should stop kicking my own ass.

YES! Quit kicking your own ass, and give yourself a pat on the back for doing the very difficult thing that's necessary to ensure his success! Good grief!

IN fact I am going to give a photo gallery of what millions of future Americans are going to look like if we do not stop AGW.

This is not exaggeration. What do you think a 60-90% reduction in crops coupled with spreading oceanic dead zones, a lack of inland fresh water, millions of displaced refugees looks like?

Welcome to America 2100:

Sexy yeah...

I had just the opposite problem, my school sysem skipped me over the second grade.

That went fine until I hit junior high, a late pubertizer, I was way behind my classmates developmentally and emotionally. had problems with it until I hit grad school and sort of caught up with my surroundings.

It catches up no matter what, it seems!

re: #225 SanFranciscoZionist

Definitely do that last, whatever else you do. Mandy, seriously, regardless of the choices you make, you're aware of and concerned with your kid's academic progress. You're holding him responsible for his own choices, and at the same time, taking his learning needs into account. You are ahead of, like 95% of the parenting population on this at this point.

You're OK, he'll be OK after he suffers through the fourth grade again. Nu, it's all right.

He goes from being upset to thinking it's cool as a way of covering up his upset.

When I was growing up, being held back was akin to a scarlet letter.

I think I'm more upset than he is. I need to get my ego out of the equation.

Marxists aren't liberals; they share a common set of assumptions also shared by many on the right, but there's miles of difference between marxists and american liberals.

Although officers were assigned to a drug unit, it wasn't known Friday whether it was a drug-related stop.

I'm a crew leader assistant with the Census. Stories like this make my skin crawl, but I suppose I'm fortunate enough to live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Not to say bad things won't happen here, but on our team, the hostilities have been simple refusals to answer specific questions. Most people have been friendly to exceptionally friendly.

Ultimately the Census wants a head count, the other questions are important but not as much as how many live there. It hasn't been explained to me that way, but so far, that's my take on it based on current experience.

Memphis is in TN.
They were shot in West Memphis, which is indisputably in Arkansas. There's a big muddy that separates the two. The two towns don't share any jurisdiction.

re: #152 MandyManners

Speaking of failing, The Kid passed all his classes for the year but, I'm holding him back in the fourth grade next year. I don't know which of us is unhappier.

I don't know what the issue is but from my experience I would have kept my daughter back a year. Both my kids lost their minds at the age of 13, but my son was the oldest in his class and my daughter was the youngest. This meant that he lost his mind in 7th grade, only failing Latin I, and the problems were assailable. She lost her mind in 8th grade, when high schools were looking at her transcript and she needed teacher recommendation letters and to do well on the HSPT. If she had lost her mind in 7th grade - i.e., if I had held her back so she was the oldest in her class - we all would have been in better shape. It took her the better part of six months in 9th grade to overcome the preconceptions that her poor transcript and HSPT performance created in the minds of her new teachers.

In addition, for years I was upset with my son for losing his mind in 7th grade because he did not test into the advanced mathematics track. But I recently ran across a paper that suggests that children may not be cognitively ready for algebra until 9th grade (although, sadly, I can't find the citation now), and he ended up taking AP Physics C and AP Calculus AB and getting 5s in both, so it could well be that he, at least, was not ready for higher math until 9th grade. This is another (hindsight) reason that I was happy that he was 13 in 7th grade instead of 8th.

I really don't think it's going to hurt your son in the long run, and in my experience it has the potential to help quite a bit. I know it's rough now. But this foundation is SO important - and their emotional and cognitive maturity is often not recognized as being as important as intellectual and physical maturity, but it is.

PS. Sorry to have been gone so long, not that I was particularly active before, but I sure lurked a lot. I now have a sort-of new computer (my first build with an ATI mobo) so I am hoping this one lasts a while.
