Thanks for the HT Charles.
That video sums up many NYers’ views on the Sanitation Department’s handling of snow removal throughout the City.
I personally hold the Mayor accountable for the failure to declare a state of emergency that would have reduced street traffic because it would have closed nonessential businesses and kept people off the roads. Snow removal has been delayed because Sanitation crews have to first remove stuck cars before they can plow, but this video is just ridiculous.
It’s a tragicomedy of errors - the front end loader is driven by an incompetent. Ditto the tow truck driver. Whoever sent the loader out without tire chains is incompetent, and the owner of the SUV will be left with the bill.
Mind you, if that SUV owner had failed to clear out his sidewalk, he’d be hit with a fine. When the City fails to clear entire blocks - what happens exactly? Lots of complaints, a few investigations, but in the end, it’s business as usual.

I don’t understand this? As someone who was born and raised in Brooklyn NY in the 50-60’s, I’ve seen this much snow in the city numerous times, and I don’t remember this sort of incompetency.
What I do remember is the streets getting plowed, people shoveling out, businesses opening a little late, and the city went on it’s merry way.
This is a joke.

Good grief.
Use the front bucket to lift the front of the loader and “walk” it out of there.
And where the hell are its chains?

re: #4 sattv4u2
No, it isn’t isolated, but Sanitation usually does a halfway decent job.
Not this time though. I expect to hear all kinds of excuses - that there was holiday staffing, budget cuts, etc., except that the Sanitation Director said that 1600 plows were out, hundreds of salt spreaders, and they had brought in additional contractors to assist clearing crosswalks, etc.
While most of Manhattan’s major streets are passable, the same can’t be said of elsewhere in the City.

Oh, I agree
With the number of times the plows have to be out and the number of streets they have to plow, they actually do an admirable job,, ESPECIALLY when the streets are barely passable in the summer! (parking on both sides on streets that were designed for horse and carriage)

Honestly, as someone who bought a $2,000 car because I knew we would be street parking it in Brooklyn, the snow plow destruction didn’t surprise me too much. Clearly, Mayor Bloomberg felt the same way as he brushed off a reporter’s question in today’s press briefing about who was responsible for the damage. The Mayor, in his typical chill manner was all, “Duh, if the sanitation worker hit the car, then of course we’re responsible. Next!”
Gubernment workers.

On another weather related note… we may actually finally get some decent accumulation of snow east of the continental divide on Thursday/Friday… and we are also expected to have lows at minus 10 degrees (f) by Friday night… brrrr… looks like the pellet stove will be working full time.
Meanwhile… on the Paris front… it appears that the Seine has risen to recent record levels due to the heavier than normal snows over the last month… the tourist boats have stopped running because navigation is problematic under the ponts (bridges)…

City workers destroy a Ford Explorer trying to free a snowbound front-loader in Brooklyn Heights, New York after the storm of 2010. The crazy thing here….the vehicle WAS….wait for it….A NYC Dept of Buildings city owned vehicle. I went down, I know the owner, they are aware of the video and no police ever came. Hope that answers a lot of questions. Obviously some comments here in response are from the driver himself.
So now they’re destroying their own city vehicles due to incompetence. Bet that two man crew was costing the city $120/hour.

Another gem from a Fox News reader….
Just another example of how a nation goes into decline when it isn’t strict in maintaining it’s culture, along with borders and language. America began as a white Christian nation of European immigrants. Now it is a hodge podge of mixed races and religions with no attempt at assimilating into the original culture and no patriotism.
Blacks always hated whites because our laws were made to benefit the MAJORITY, thus enhancing America’s strength. Now that Obama is turning America over to minorities, he is in effect destroying America through anarchy and chaos.

I’m just glad it doesn’t snow more here in Lubbock: We’d be up the proverbial creek without a shovel if we had to depend on the city administration for anything as demanding as snow removal. They can’t even remove water from the streets, even though it has the great advantage of running downhill all by itself.
This place averages only 20 or so inches of rainfall a year but flood insurance is required in a large swath of the city. The reason is non-functional or non-existent storm drains. One intersection is notorious for flooding to a depth of 2 feet if it rains for 10 minutes, even though it is less than 1000 feet from a drainage pond that is 50 feet lower in elevation. It has been like that since it was paved in 1940. The city bills me 9.95 a month for storm sewer service even though my house is on a low ridge (the only one for miles) and half a mile from the nearest storm drain.
Then there are the famous Lubbock forever lights (sometimes rendered with an additional “F”), traffic signals with 2 and 3 minute cycle times that seem for all the world to have been designed purely to make large areas almost inaccessible. By an odd coincidence, these are the same areas where the local real estate fatcats do not have extensive investments. A certain stretch of Quaker Avenue, an alleged main boulevard with five lanes, is known as the “red light district.” This is not because it hosts a concentration of bawdy houses (at least not as far as I know) but because it has six red lights in a distance of just 3000 feet.

It is important to remember Obama’s close ties to these haters and subversives. Louis Farrakhan and Obama have a long history, and it was Obama’s Department of Justice that refused to prosecute the Black Panthers who were threatening white voters in Philly. This is a terrible thing, but it was expected. What makes it deadly is that Obama is in the White House.

In Minneapolis in the 70’s, the citizenry cooperated with snow removal, obeying the laws limiting parking to one side of the street. The city had its act together and the snow was removed promptly.
The garbage was picked up. Homes that became derelict because of fire damage were torn down within the week and razed to the ground. Crime is a feature of any city; it’s built in to human nature, but it wasn’t rampant and brazen.

The Chicago Blizzard of 1967 Revisited
You youngsters think you’ve seen snow in Chicago. Let me tell you about a real snowstorm. I’m talking about the Blizzard of ‘67.
If you don’t like the weather in Chicago, wait awhile—it will change. January 24 was a Tuesday and the temperature got up to 65. On Wednesday, it was more like normal. On Thursday, at about 5 AM, it started snowing. Morning travel was a little slow, but you expect that in January.
And it kept snowing all day. By 2:00 it was getting so bad, some businesses started letting people out early. At 4:00, when the evening rush hour started, things got really impossible.
On the streets, the snow just kept piling up. The plows couldn’t keep up with it—we didn’t have snow routes then. The busses got stuck. The ‘L’ backed up, because part of the system ran on the ground. Some of the commuter trains were running, but with big delays.
Traffic stopped moving. Totally. After a few hours, many people just left their cars where they were and started walking. The city later counted 20,000 abandoned vehicles. Some people who were downtown just checked into a hotel for the night—or camped out in the lobby when the hotel filled up.
It snowed all night. On Friday, January 27, the snow stopped. It was 10 AM, and we’d had 29 straight hours of snow. There were 23 inches on the ground. That was a record for so much so fast.
That Friday was like a holiday. Most of the city was shut down, and neighbors traded stories about how long it had taken them to get home. Of course, Friday wasn’t a holiday for the crews that had to work to get things moving again.
By Tuesday, we were getting back to normal. But on Wednesday, there was some more snow, 4 inches to start off February. The Sunday after that, a third storm dumped 10 more inches. Then the weather turned cold. All that snow stayed where it was for over a month.
Now you have over three feet worth of snow piled up. You didn’t have many snow blowers, so people had to shovel by hand. When they finally dug out their car, they’d save the space by putting out old chairs or tables. That’s when this famous Chicago custom started—after the Blizzard of ‘67.
So the next time we get some snow, don’t complain about how bad it is. And don’t try to take my parking space.

Is it? I remember the blizzard of 1969 when I was a kid in Brooklyn which was about 24 inches. Also had another one up towards Kingston which put down about 3 feet of snow and below zero temperatures. Of course I had to be outside playing with my GI Joe. Front end loader would dump the snow at the corner of our lot which meant snow caves!

That particular snowstorm resonates with me - I had moved from Philadelphia to Flushing Queens the day before, and my band had a gig booked in Smithtown, LI that night. I still remember heading out the LIE that day, one of the very few vehicles on the expressway that day. We made the show and played to the bartenders.

re: #52 Shiplord Kirel
It sounds like Lubbock’s traffic engineering division has the exact same motto that Baton Rouge’s does - “Create Chaos Everywhere”.

I’ve seen it done before. Just lift the front wheels with the front bucket/arm which creates a pivot point on the rear wheels. Then you can “turn” the front end by swinging the bucket/arm to the left or right.

Sanitation employees posing work slowdown? Residents, workers say yes; city, union say no
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Are Sanitation Department workers conducting a slowdown on the job today?
As Staten Island residents complain about the poor snow removal efforts by the city, about a dozen people have called the Advance to report abandoned and/or stuck plows and salt spreaders. Employees, they say, aren’t in a hurry to get them working again and some have been left for several hours.
Some callers report Sanitation vehicles driving around the Island with their plows lifted off the ground and one plow caught fire on Connor Avenue in Richmond last night, causing workers to leave it blocking the street at Luke Court…

Sanitation Workers Say Cuts Take Toll on Snow Cleanup
New York City’s response to the monster snow storm has been hampered by Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s decision to reduce the Sanitation Department’s workforce as part of citywide budget cuts, the head of the sanitation workers’ union said Monday.
Harry Nespoli, president of the Uniformed Sanitationmen’s Association, said the department is currently down roughly 400 workers.
“We are undermanned — we need another 400,” Nespoli said in a telephone interview with The Wall Street Journal. “I mean this is a perfect example of why you need the man power in New York City. We’re shorthanded here.”
Nespoli praised the workforce, saying the workers are doing a yeoman’s job given the weather conditions and the depleted troops. But he said the staff reductions have nevertheless taken a toll…
Want to see a picture of Harry Nespoli?
Right. Down 400 workers. I’m sure they’re all working on the snow emergency as we speak.

When I was 17 my ‘74 Camaro was dragged about 50’ by a city snow plow, with me in it. He was backing up and snagged me with his shovel on his passenger side. He didn’t hear me honking because he was wearing a Walkman and I couldn’t back up (at least not fast enough) because the road was snowy and icy. This was New Year’s Day 1984… I only remember it was NYD because I had to meet my mother at church, it’s some sort of holy day for Catholics. At least I had a police report to explain why I didn’t go to church. Not that I’ve been to a church in the last 25 years now except for weddings/funerals…

And Perot wasn’t a Jew from NYC. And Bloomberg is also divorced, and short. He has most of Giuliani’s drawbacks, and none of his plusses.

I’m just waiting to see if Bloomberg’s failure to act prior to the emergency will be blamed on Obama, like the Nagin/Blanco failures were blamed on Bush (and still are, fer cryin’ out loud).

I am recalling what the reaction was when Philly declared a weather emergency on December 26 and the Eagles game was postponed. There were a lot of people who were upset including former Mayor and current Governor Ed Rendell. Hmm. Is it better to have someone’s car destroyed and have a game go on as planned or is it better to have a game postponed and no car destroyed? I personally would rather have the cars off the road so that streets can be cleared and a game can be played later.
196 | Amory Blaine Tue, Dec 28, 2010 2:52:10pm |
What’s sad about the Philly game is that the Governor thinks his citizens lives are so empty that they need a fucking game to carry on. Big whoopty doo. And if the game did go on and bad shit happened then what? Who would we all blame then?

The NFL, I think that’s why they made the decision? A repeat of this letter.

I’m guessing on the insurance form it will say “Act of God” for the cause. The city probably has some obscure line of code that prohibits parking on the street in a snow emergency. Kind of like how your windows might get smashed in if you park in front of a hydrant and the fire department happens to need to use ithe hydrant while your car is blocking it. The tugger and the tuggee had to know exactly what was going to happen when the truck pulled the chain. Everyone knows a line is the shortest distance between two points right?
Random question.. Would that sort of citizen journalism be legal in France? Didn’t they make it illegal to film or photograph news stories in progress without a journalism license.
