Could Romney unseat Obama?
Gallup: Majority now blame Obama for state of U.S. economy
For the first time in his term, a majority of Americans say that President Obamabears responsibility for the state of the U.S. economy, a new Gallup poll finds.
More Americans say former President George W. Bush is to blame, but that number is slowly dropping as Obama's is ticking upward.
The survey, conducted Sept. 15-18, found that 36% blame Bush "a great deal" and 33% blame him "a moderate amount." By comparison, 24% now blame Obama "a great deal" while 29% blame him "a moderate amount." That's a shift from an 18%/32% split in an April survey.
Romney dominates NH poll, well ahead of Perry
Mitt Romney may be tightening his grip on New Hampshire voters, despite tremendous buzz surrounding Texas Gov. Rick Perry in the nation's first presidential primary state and elsewhere.
The former Massachusetts governor now leads his nearest rival, Texas Rep. Ron Paul, by 27 points among likely New Hampshire voters, according to a Suffolk University-7News poll released Wednesday night. Perry finished far back, earning 8 percent compared with Romney's 41 percent. Paul took 14 percent and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman received 10 percent to round out the top four finishers.

OK, I went & Wiki'd...
Arecaceae or Palmae (also known by the name Palmaceae, which is considered taxonomically invalid,[2] or by the common name palm tree), are a family of flowering plants, the only family in the monocot order Arecales. There are roughly 202 currently known genera with around 2600 species, most of which are restricted to tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate climates. Most palms are distinguished by their large, compound, evergreen leaves arranged at the top of an unbranched stem. However, many palms are exceptions to this statement, and palms in fact exhibit an enormous diversity in physical characteristics. As well as being morphologically diverse, palms also inhabit nearly every type of habitat within their range, from rainforests to deserts.

I really don't know how I feel about it at this point. Of the GOP candidates, Romney would probably the one I could most stomach. But when you consider that he'd be little more than a puppet, pushed around by a Republican leadership that has become leashed to the Tea Party's whims, it'd be an utter disaster.

Exactly. It's basically deciding between nutjob religious fanaticism (Bachmann, Perry, etc.) or naked greed that hates the poor and middle class.

Sigh.
Tree hugging is actually a wilderness survival technique.
Lots of people freak out and panic when they realize they are lost. They'll run and scream and this is bad, because they'll become even more lost than before and be harder to find.
You are supposed to hug a tree when you first realize you are lost to keep from panicking. The physical reality of the tree is supposed to keep you from doing the random freak out.
I've never tested this out myself.

I think the question in the R primaries will be whether the base will vote for a Mormon. Romney is obviously the most attractive candidate for "traditional" R's. But he wears Magic Underwear, which makes a *huge* number of the base molto nervoso. The TPers may jump sideways to Perry, even with his warts. The man has been, if anything, consistently hard right.
We'll see, but I'm not convinced the new rank and file will support Romney.

Fabulous picture. Palms and other primitive plants have such great structure to them.
I don't know about palms, but the Gingko leaf is the exact opposite of fractal. Your typical broadleaf tree has a fractal vein structure. The gingko leaf doesn't. Each strand goes straight to the base of the leaf. Google please? Right. The petiole. I knew that. {not so much}
By analogy, palm fronds, too, wouldn't be fractal, if memory serves and palms evolved earlier than gymnosperm trees.
But it's a really nice photo and it has two or three iterations of a pattern so it's kind of sort of fractal. Good enough for purposes of characterizing a photo.
This pedantic nitpicking post now, mercifully, ends. Enjoy your photos, non-semi-autistics of the world. :-)

Agreed, while Romney polls well up in the Northeast and perhaps out Utah way and further West, Perry's more likely to carry everything between. He's not only "one of us" to the Bible-thumping crowd, but he's also pretty much camping on the very fringes of the far-Right.
Meanwhile, Bachmann's still self-destructing, Cain's a joke, Huntsman comes off as trying too hard, Santorum's a non-entity, and Crazy Uncle Ron is spending his political twilight once again tilting at windmills.

Huntsman is running for the 2016 nomination. He can't win this one, though he should. If, however, the Republicans nominate a hapless loser who finds a path to defeat, that might, just might, be a lesson to Republican primary voters: don't dumpster dive for candidates.
Huntsman speaks several languages, knows some science or at least recognizes that scientists know some science, and he's been ambassador to China.
One party rule never works for long. The temptations are just irresistible. Sooner or later, the Republicans are going to have a scandal to run against that's so juicy they're bound to win. When that day comes, there needs to be a grownup at the helm of the Republican party. Huntsman could be that grownup.

I've had to give up PC gaming for awhile, as my computer's a virtual Cold War relic these days, which between the general march of time and some of my less intelligent efforts to boost its performance, has become totally shiite when trying to run anything more demanding than Minecraft.
That would make my 2004 Dell laptop a goddamn survivor. It's had individual parts replace but no complete conkout yet.

Yeah, I've heard about the far-Left grousing that they need to primary Obama, so that they can "force" him to run to the Left in order to secure the nomination or replace him with someone more to their liking.
Or, in other words, Nader and a couple dozen self-appointed "leaders" of the Left wish to commit political seppuku by making the DNC appear every bit as nutty as the GOP.
Yeah... without them we would have had President Gore and a much much better world.

The stark hypocrisy of them bitching about the "free to play" model while simultaneously starting Team Fortress 2 hat-trading threads (one time initiated with an infamous Jewish caricature laden with TF2 hats in typical 4chan fashion) is downright hilarious.
One of the greatest things I ever saw was a voiced PowerPoint presentation from an EA developer for Battlefield Heroes. When they offered virtual goods for sale, they got all these massive flame wars on their boards for it, so they decided to research the biggest flame warriors. Turns out they were the biggest consumers of virtual goods:

The only major problem I've had yet were of the HDD variety, this last time due to a corrupted BOOT file that forced me to do a total restore to factory-defaults. Unfortunately, I've not the money right now to afford even a cheap replacement, so I'm soldiering on until either the motherboard or video card expire (knock on wood) or until I can get a better paying job.

Well, the other part of it is that I have no real confidence in my skills. I've worked on PCs before and even took an A+ class some years back. But I pretty much like the assurance that, if the first time I turn on my PC, the magic smoke comes billowing out, I can box it up and take it back rather than trying to figure out where I screwed up and just how much money I'm out.

Our three have differing scales of frustration. The eldest cat, who's also the smallest, is pretty easy. Just scoop her up, guide her into the cage, and off you go.
The second eldest, our big grey tomcat, is almost as easy. But he also knows the sound of a cat carrier opening and bolts for cover immediately.
Our youngest, another big grey furball (though this one female) jumps if you move at her at anything more than a crawl, so catching her is always a joy. Tried to catch her once just by myself and spent 20 minutes doing so before my dad showed up and we corralled her.

LOL

Even worse, the youngest also has sleek, glossy fur, meaning she can slide out of anything other than a death grip. And she can move at an appreciable fraction of the speed of sound, so even for two people, it's a chore to catch her.

This one spends most of her time trying to avoid human contact anyway. Our eldest two cats we adopted off the street, and both of them came to us, so they're not afraid of us. Our youngest was given to us by a neighbor, who had in turn received her from their elderly mother who had been raising the cat for roughly a year. So this cat is totally neurotic, though she's slowly mellowing out as time goes along.

Like one out of every four people in our country today, this man weighs more than he should. If he loses those excess pounds - brings his weight down to normal and keeps it there - he will look and feel better. Furthermore, he will probably live longer. Statistics show that if weight is more than 10 per cent above normal, life expectancy is usually reduced about twenty per cent.

When I said he got better than he deserved I meant they should have strapped him to the back of a state highway dept. truck and dragged him across the state. I'm not necessarily against the DP (the planet would be better off with some people not on it), I just don't trust our judicial system enough to believe only the truly guilty get the DP. The Orange County District Attorney's Kelly Thomas Hearing [Breaking: Two Officers Charged with Second and Third Degree Murder]
[Link: reason.com...]
The prosecutor goes into detail what they believe happened and ends with:
Thomas' numerous please of "I'm sorry," "I can't breathe," "Help," "Dad," were all to no avail. Kelly Thomas not responding when the blows to his face occurred? No help. The growing pool of blood? No help. Ramos is charged with murder for creating this dangerous situation that placed KElly Thomas' life in jeopardy and for placing the responding officers in that situation.
Ramos had to know he was creating a situation where Kelly Thomas would fear for his life. Ramos knew that the other officers would come to his aid and assist in applying force to Kelly Thomas. Ramos knew when he did that that Kelly Thomas was going to be hurt. Badly hurt.
The cause of death was mechanical suppression of the thorax. Kelly Thomas could not inhale. Over time his brain was deprived of oxygen. He went into a coma and died. That is the primary cause of death.
It falls so fall short of professional police conduct.
2:22 p.m. Reporter asks if more charges will be filed. Rackauckas says he doesn't think so. Ramos and Cicinelli will be arrained at 2 p.m. PST today. No trial team has been selected. Rackauckas will be lead prosecutor.

Murder Charge, Counts Against 2 Cops in Kelly Thomas Beating Case
[Link: blogs.ocweekly.com...]
At his arraignment this afternoon, which the Weekly's Marisa Gerber attended, a handcuffed Fullerton Police Officer Manuel Ramos pleaded not guilty to felony second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter charges in the beating death of Kelly Thomas.
Held in lieu of $1 million bail, Ramos then had his arraignment continued to Monday in Judge Erick Larsh's Orange County Superior Court courtroom in Santa Ana.
Police Corporal Jay Cicinelli also pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter and use of excessive force in the unarmed homeless and mentally ill man's death. Cicinelli was not in cuffs as he'd already posted a $25,000 bond. He has a pre-trial hearing scheduled for Nov. 4.

You mean those "social parasites" who are still under 18 or over 65 or otherwise unable to work and help others earn a profit which can be taxed?
You mean those shiftless folks who pay only sales taxes on the goods they purchase from the money they make at their minimum-wage jobs?
The point is that even the most individual success story is a couunal effort (if I dare use a term that sounds like "communism") here.
It is not about "redistribution of wealth", it is just a matter of paying for services rendered: those who benefit the most should pay a greater share, especially those who benefit from a stable and functioning legal and physical infrastructure, those who benefit from having the US military there to protect access to their resources, as well as an education system.

CRAWFISH!
'Sovereign Citizen' Opens Fire On Store Because It Ran Out Of Crawfish
A 'sovereign citizen' in Pensacola, Florida allegedly opened fire at a seafood market after learning that they had run out of crawfish.
42 year-old Larry Wayne Kelly allegedly fired upon the L&T Seafood Market with an AK-47 from the window of his pickup truck, after he was told they had sold out of crawfish on Sunday.

Oh, and the Palestinians? They're backing off the supposed deal to delay announcing statehood at the UN, and they're busy blaming the President for backing Israel and killing the peace process.
Right. Just another bit of projection on their part - the Palestinians blame everyone but themselves for their predicament. Diplomats willingly submit to this pseudoreality and engage in diplomatic actions without admitting that Israel lacks a partner in peace.
We'd just have to ignore all the Palestinian statements about ultimately eliminating Israel and using a 2-state solution as a means to that ultimate end. We'd have to ignore the calls for ethnically cleansing Palestinian controlled territory.
We'd have to ignore that Palestinians and pro-Palestinian politicians can be elected to the Israeli Knesset and rise to top positions, but the Palestinians would refuse to allow Jews to live in Palestinian controlled territory at all.
But the blame rests on the President? Hardly.
The President can be faulted though for thinking he could interject himself into the failed peace process - even with the best intentions - the Arab Israeli conflict is as intractable as ever precisely because Israel lacks a partner in peace.

Well, yes and no. The problem with the economy is so much of it has been made up of financial instruments. Much of the 'wealth' in the world isn't backed up by anything-- I'm not talking about GOLD but I mean no actual wealth got created.
Some jerk figures out an equation that lets people create tons of weird securities and get loans off of them-- money gets created, by the process of that loan, but there's no real wealth. In fact, there's anti-wealth-- the security is actually going to contribute to a meltdown.
A real 'correction' would shrink the world economy by a true amount. If all the things that actually have negative value but are treated like wealth-- like tobacco companies, for example-- sheesh. I don't even know what it would do. Just implode.

It's a lovely collective delusion isn't it. Much like how much the markets and economy run on consumer confidence (perception) rather than any sort of true reality. If we think things are rosy then we spend and potentially make it so - an interesting sort of self-fulfilling prophecy.

Fun labor history fact:
Every member of the crew of the Titanic was paid right up until the moment of its sinking. After that, no matter if they were attempting to save passengers in a lifeboat, they weren't paid for it. And of course no medical expenses were paid for. And if they accepted any money from any of the passengers as a thank-you for having saved them, they were deemed to be corrupt and evil and shunned from society for having taken a bribe.
Fun times! Let's do that again. Let's go back to when, after a ferry sank in Lake Michigan, a court ruled that the families were entitled only to payment from the worth of the ferry at that point-- the ferry that was sitting on the bottom of the lake. So they each got about $20 per dead husband/father. And of course the funeral expenses were not paid for by the company either.
Let's pretend like the competition between labor and capital is a fair one, and ignore reality.

Yep. And also if you go back to court cases from the early 1900s you see men who lost limbs in accidents (like railroad work) who were denied compensation claims against the railroad company. There was a belief at the time legally that since other workers were wholely or partially responsible for the accident the company wasn't.
This was a major thing that set Teddy Roosevelt off. And one reason he was pushing for the concept of judicial recall as the Bull Moose* candidate in 1912.

PETA plans porn website to promote message
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is planning to launch a pornographic website to promote its animal rights and vegan diet message, a move that critics say will backfire and ostracize them from mainstream society.
PETA spokeswoman Lindsay Rajt said in a telephone interview from Los Angeles on Tuesday that the group has applied with ICM Registry to launch the website peta.xxx.
Rajt says the site will feature "tantalizing" videos and photographs, which will lead viewers into animal rights messages. She noted that Norfolk-based PETA has used porn stars and nudity to get its message across in the past, including an annual speech online in which a PETA representative undresses. That video later shares a message about slaughterhouses.
...Rajt said PETA officials would track the website to determine if people are viewing the animal rights messages and not just the nudity. Past experience has shown that they will, she said.
View porn or slaughterhouses? Tough decision.

You are hypothesizing a major change in the mindset of the R base, and I don't see anything on the horizon to cause that. Losing to Obama made them crazier. Winning certain won't smarten them up. I would love to see an R party that thinks Huntsman is worth considering, because then they would be a responsible governing party.
But I think the R's would have to nominate a far righty and then get crushed before they would seriously entertain Huntsman, and them getting crushed in 2012 is not in the cards. So if they lose, they will draw the wrong lesson from it, and it will be like 2008 all over again: "If we had nominated a true conservative this wouldn't have happened. Our guy wasn't pure enough."
My two cents.

Quite frankly, the GOP needs an enema. Badly. No matter what happens against Obama, it will only further embolden the teabaggers and far right nutjobs.
Win, and they become convinced that America is on their side and agrees with their reactionary agenda. Lose, and they become convinced that the only reason they lost, just like in 2008, is because they weren't "conservative" enough. Either way, the Republican party loses.

For a number of reasons polls have a fairly strong conservative bias, and are kind of nonpredictive at this point anyways.
P'll put it up now, Its gonna be Romney/Obama, O wins.
If you give me even odds on a bet, yes or no, Romney wins the nomination and then Obama wins the general election, I'll take it. I have two ways to win the bet---Romney doesn't get the nomination, or he does win the general election.
But you're right about polls---polls reflect current reality, not future reality, they don't reflect what people will actually do, only what they say they'll do, and they don't reflect what people in general would say, only what those who will talk at all will say.
And all that's only if you can design a way to reach a random sample of voters.

I think everything will depend on how the economy and unemployment has progressed next year. If it's worse, Obama loses, if it's a whole lot better he probably wins. I think it's too early to pick a clear winner right now. If I recall Hillary was the odds on favorite at this time last election season.

Politicians, like regular people, are allowed to modify their opinions.
However, they should also be clear that they are modifying a previously stated opinion and not start hair splitting about context in an attempt to deny saying it. That's being a weasel, and something that you call your friends on whey they do it.
In addition, an opinion change that happens in a very short period of time and/or flip-flops back is suspect. Especially if it correlates highly with the perceived viewpoint of the group being addressed at the time.

Uhm. No friend of the harpy here, but: I think you got your facts wrong. You cite this NY Post article as backup for your claim that Geller called all Muslims "savages" in her proposed MTA ad. But that article only mentions that that ad likens "the enemies of the Jewish state to 'savages'". The "enemies of the Jewish state" is not "Muslims". So I was curious and went over to Geller's site and found an article by her that supposedly shows the ad in question.
If this is it, it does not mention Muslims at all:
You say it's "the thrust of her group's advertising" that Muslims are savages. I don't see that. It also indicts, e.g., leftie anti-imperialist anti-Zionists who in her mind are in cahoots with islamic fundamentalists. It doesn't really indict Muslims who support Israel against islamic fundamentalists.
And of course once you enter her counter-jihad univers to get more "context", the insanity displayed therein leads to the conclusion that all Muslims are savages. But that isn't what the ad says itself.
Geller is crazy and dangerous. But I don't think the argument that the ad basically calls all Muslims savages holds water.

Shortly after taking his seat on a Delta Air Lines flight from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas on Sunday, David Alan Anderson, 60, began elbowing the passenger next to him to "claim" the armrest, according to a federal complaint. He then put his foot on the passenger's leg.
"Sir, you are going to have to move over," the passenger told him.
About five minutes later, the passenger saw Anderson staring at him. He then said to the passenger, "If I have a knife, I would slit your throat," the complaint states.
The passenger told flight attendants, who noticed Anderson reach into his bag several times with something cupped in his hand. The flight crew then called Salt Lake police.
Anderson denied having a weapon or making threats. But during a consensual search of his bag, police found a Gerber folding knife with a 3 ½-inch blade. Police handcuffed Anderson and took him to the airport police station.
At the station, the complaint says, Anderson made numerous profane threats to police and FBI agents including, "Your days are not long," "It's a shotgun in the chest," "I'll pull your eyeballs out," and "It will give me a lot of pleasure to see you again, but you won't see me, bucko."
According the complaint, Anderson smelled slightly of alcohol, but did not appear to be drunk. Anderson faces charges of dangerous weapon on an aircraft and retaliation against a federal law enforcement officer by threat of murder.

i can't remember my time but i was able to run to whole race without stopping or walking, which was my goal.
That's pretty much my goal. I'm not planning on becoming a marathon runner or anything, but I'd like to be able to at least jog a 5k without stopping. If it gets me into the habit of jogging or running daily to keep in shape, so much the better.
I've gotten a lot of exercise just from walking these past couple of years, especially since I live in an area with a lot of steep inclines, but I'm not a runner, so I figure that's a good program to start with.

Ron Paul says he'd consider putting Dennis Kucinich in his Cabinet
Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) says he would consider putting the liberal congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) in his Cabinet if he were to win the presidency in 2012.
Paul said his libertarian political philosophy helps him connect with some on the far left — including Kucinich, who shares Paul’s general anti-war stance.
Paul joked that if he brought the Ohio congressman aboard in his administration, he might have to create a "Department of Peace."
"You've got to give credit to people who think," he said."Being pragmatic is about forming coalitions," Paul said at a breakfast sponsored by The Christian Science Monitor. "I probably work with coalitions better than the other candidates. I don't think I've said anything negative here about the president."
Paul spokesmen Jesse Benton later said the remark was a joke, and said Kucinich is too ideologically different from Paul to be a candidate for a Cabinet spot.
Paul/Kucinich 2012!

Rick Santorum has a lot of problems, starting with the fact that he's a self-righteous, sanctimonious asshole.
I'm glad Dan Savage's meme has ended up creating this problem for Santorum. It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

True that. Some more weird news:
Ted Haggard Appearing On Celebrity Wife Swap With Gary Busey
Ted Haggard is filming an episode of ABC's Celebrity Wife Swap this week -- with Gary Busey.
Marsha L. Smith, a spokesperson for ABC, confirmed to TPM that Haggard and Busey will be filming an episode of the show.
The premise of the series, which was imported by ABC from the UK, is exactly what it sounds like: Two families swap wives for a short period of time, drama presumably ensues.
The Colorado Springs Gazette first reported that the former New Life Church pastor would be filming the episode in Colorado Springs at the GLBT Pride Center. Dan Murphy, an employee at the Center, confirmed this to TPM.

Remember when candidate Obama caught a ton of shit for doing the same thing? I'm sure the media will be just as outraged over Perry's failure to show proper respect, right?

The swap is to put Gary and Ted together so the wives can go someplace and live a normal life for a little while.
