Herman Cain Accuser Holds a News Conference

Not blowing over
Politics • Views: 27,903

Gloria Allred’s press conference with the latest woman to accuse Herman Cain of sexual harassment is scheduled for 1:30 pm ET; expect the media to go into full circus mode on every news channel. They just showed the room where Allred’s presser is happening — totally crammed with reporters and cameras.

If Herman Cain thought this scandal was going to blow over, he was mistaken.

Here’s a thread to discuss…

UPDATE at 11/7/11 11:11:47 am

The accuser, Sharon Bialek, said that when she was alone in a car with Herman Cain, he suddenly shoved his hand under her skirt, reaching for her “genitals,” then grabbed her head and pulled it down to his crotch.

Ms. Bialek is actually describing a sexual assault, not just harassment. And she has sworn statements from two people she talked to about the incident, shortly after it happened.

UPDATE at 11/7/11 11:20:35 am

A rapid response from the Cain campaign:

Just as the country finally begins to refocus on our crippling $15 trillion national debt and the unacceptably high unemployment rate, now activist celebrity lawyer Gloria Allred is bringing forth more false accusations against the character of Republican front-runner Herman Cain.

All allegations of harassment against Mr. Cain are completely false. Mr. Cain has never harassed anyone. Fortunately the American people will not allow Mr. Cain’s bold “9-9-9 Plan”, clear foreign policy vision and plans for energy independence to be overshadowed by these bogus attacks.

What happened?

A guy entered and started scolding the press for yammering by saying "What if I'm the woman? What if I have unrevelead genitalia?" it was fucking weird.

This seems to be standard now for high profile press conferences -- loons show up, grab the mic before anyone can stop them, and irritate the hell out of everybody until someone acts like an adult and gives them the hook.

Not going to be enough here. Charges are way too serious and specific for a general denial. She's going to be targeted for destruction, since that's the only remotely possible way to try and save his campaign.

149 lawhawk  Mon, Nov 7, 2011 11:10:01am

As compared with the Friday night news dump - where the 1st woman didn't want to be part of any further scrutiny, this woman's story will have legs because she's putting herself out for scrutiny and she's got Allred.

Cain's chances are declining significantly.

And here's a rebuttal for anyone who wants to play the politics game:

1) Would you want your wife, daughter, mother, subjected to someone like Cain who engaged in these alleged activities? I think most people would say no - those who demur or say yes are in denial and are putting politics ahead of logic, reasoning, or the facts.

2) the sworn statements to others would likely fall into hearsay (Cain's people would try to treat it as such); they weren't there and are only basing their position on the statements of the woman. Still, if they're contemporaneous with the events, it's better than no such evidence at all.

3) What else is Cain going to say? He's painted himself into a corner when he said that there would be others and that he denied any such behavior/actions. Now, he's putting himself further into a corner, because each successive woman sounds more and more believable.

Irony: Herman Cain passing out ethics lessons to reporters

Herman Cain, unwilling to defend himself on the merits against the sexual harassment allegations against him, has taken to having his campaign pass out copies of the “journalistic code of ethics” to reporters who dare ask him questions about the matter.

Reporter-bashing is always a handy tactic, especially when you don’t have the facts on your side. Especially among Republican primary voters. So it’s no surprise that the GOP presidential candidate resorted to that cudgel during his debate with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. “There are too many people in the media who are downright dishonest,” Cain said. “They do a disservice to the American people.”

Spare me the lectures about honesty from a man who denied that he was aware of a financial payment to settle the sexual harassment claims, then acknowledged it, then said he was distinguishing between a “settlement” and an “agreement.”

The “disservice to the American people” is being done by a man whose campaign first said he could only “vaguely recall” something about a harassment complaint, then proferred an obviously incomplete account about commenting on a woman’s height. He has since tried — without much success — to shut down debate on a serious question about his fitness for the presidency

If Cain wants to engage in a debate about journalistic ethics, maybe he should read the code before he starts handing it out.

Sexual Harassment Suit is actually a fairly bloodless phrase, one of the many euphemisms we employ to be polite.

"Grabbed my head and shoved it towards his crotch" is a phrase with power. It disgusts us and repels the average woman. It describes a crude, nasty, unpleasant sort of man.

I think his wife isn't going to give any interviews now because she won't be able to keep a straight face when asked about the accusations against her husband. The fact that he completely flubbed the right-of-return question, had no awareness of it, kind of shows how thin the support for Israel really is in a lot of the GOP. Nobody bothered to really brief him on Israel. It's not important, because just be being in the GOP he gets is I Support Israel gold card. No need to actually demonstrate competence in the area.

213 Targetpractice  Mon, Nov 7, 2011 11:27:28am

It's not just the sexual assault angle I'm looking at, it's also the "strong taking advantage of the weak" angle as well. At a time when folks are pissed at the "1%" for using their power to push around weak folks, you have allegations that Cain, a powerful businessman, was extorting sex for favors.

The Right will circle the wagons, but as noted earlier, it's going to turn into a circular firing squad. The more they try to defend Cain, the more distasteful they become to everybody else.

214 Donna Ballard  Mon, Nov 7, 2011 11:27:31am

I just finished watching the press conference with Ms. Allred and her client and these allegations are very, very specific and credible! I, for one, believe he really did this and I sincerely hope it flushes him down the nearest toilet and into the gutter he crawled out of! To grab her head and try to force her into such a vulnerable position is unconscionable and undoubtedly assault! He's truly is a sick S.O.B. and I one do not want him in the White House!

Here's what just changed. Details.

This is, of course, just my opinion.

This whole "campaign" is revealing to a lot of people, and revealing of a lot of people. The sides people defend tell all.

Of course, for the wingnuts, she's just a librul plant who's just making things up to lynch a conservative black man. And besides, everyone knows that sexual harassment doesn't exist. =P

HC really has them at a disadvantage right now, seeing as it's their forebears who burned down entire parts of town when a Black man was said to even look crosseyed at a white woman. Now they're going to have to defend him from far worse allegations to have any present-day consistency.

Ten years ago I was out of work and I asked a friend (I thought he was a friend, I know better now!) if he knew anyone who was hiring and he said he could possibly help me of I "scratched" his itch for him from time to time in the future. Here's the spam from AFP. The utter mendacity is jaw dropping.

This week, the United States Senate is expected to finally vote on overturning the most brazen of all of the Obama administration’s regulatory power grabs. The FCC’s outrageous net neutrality order is set to take effect on November 20.

Fortunately, the Senate is poised to vote on blocking it.

Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, the lead sponsor of S.J.Res.6, the vehicle for stopping this power grab, and Republican Leader Mitch McConnell have brilliantly used the procedural tools available to them to force a Senate floor vote that cannot be filibustered. All 47 Republicans are likely to vote yes, with Senator Olympia Snowe of Maine – who supports network neutrality – signing on as a cosponsor because she objects to the FCC attempting an end-run around Congress.

The question now is whether just four Democrats will vote to stop this power grab, and force Obama to use the veto pen and take personal responsibility if he insists on regulating the Internet.

This is crunch time. If the FCC can get away with this, then federal bureaucrats can disregard the Congress and the courts and do almost anything they want. Our representative form of government is at stake.

Allred has a lot of detractors, but Sharon Bialek made a very good decision to hire her as counsel before going public. The Cain campaign can't risk a legal battle with someone like Allred now - they know she's a formidable opponent.

Considering the mistakes Cain's made so far, going toe to toe with Allred doesn't seem like that much of a stretch.

What legal battle. Cain could simply ignore it - "it's been asked, and answered". He and his flacks could simply claim that this was something he previously addressed; he predicted that these kinds of baseless claims would be spouted; and that she's not a credible witness; etc.

If we go by Cain's record in this campaign season, it's that he'll try to ignore the problem, and then deny deny deny. I doubt they'll take a direct shot at or through Allred. She's very good at managing media expectations and maximizing media exposure.

But you know where this is going to hurt most? Not with the TP types who still think that there's nothing wrong, but with the guys who really make the big name donations/bundlers who have to think that Cain's bad jobu and will look for a safer candidate choice than Cain (likely Romney, though it might give Perry a jolt).

Addendum:
And it's not like Cain can't have others smear her on his behalf (Koch protecting their interests, the TP, etc.) He can stand back seemingly above the fray while others sling mud at her.

The sad part is I could. We do actually have a serious problem with lack of restraint, training, and abuse of power by cops in this country, especially in the area of not understanding the circumstances where it is legal to photograph or record them.

In addition, we have a huge problem of prosecutors and police departments actively being corrupt, being shown to have cooked evidence and investigations, but prosecutors are immune from lawsuits for doing so and normally face no significant penalties even when they're shown to have perverted justice.

I suspect New Hampshire will be the new Iowa. re: #319 darthstar

I suspect New Hampshire will be the new Iowa. If John Huntsman can win there - and he has a big ground game in NH apparently - everyone will drop Romney like a rock and flood him with money...yes, he's still Mormon, but he believes in science, isn't a total nutter, and would be the biggest challenge to Obama from the field - as he used to work for President Obama, so he could run a "positive" campaign while the big money could go negative on Obama.

Additionally, Obama couldn't really go negative on someone he once hired.

I would like to emigrate to your dreamworld.

I'm actually surprised there haven't been that many HC dick jokes, at least not that I've seen. I bet we'll be hearing a lot more after today.

You know, this whole mentality of blaming the victim and turning them into the bad guy is just ridiculous and a real symptom of the illness that society is suffering today, especially the leaders of our government. It seems to me that as soon as they get elected their brains and common sense just turn to mush and their egos take over. Its a very sad situation that needs to be addressed, but I'm afraid it never will. There's just no such thing as an honest politician, CEO, CFO or anyone else in a position of power anymore.

There is some reporting that Ms. Bialek stated that the last time she encountered Cain was at a Tea Party event. Interesting. From all the NRA females I have encountered at Food Shows and other events over the years they pretty much were white and blond too. She is pretty typical. And the NRA is very very Republican. No surprise there.

400 (I Stand By What I Said Whatever It Was)  Mon, Nov 7, 2011 12:28:08pm

re: #167 Obdicut

There is one part that is factually checkable: her boyfriend booking the room and Cain upgrading it. I assume someone will investigate that, but if that's true, it definitely is weird as shit-- if Cain only met the woman a couple times before, splashing out like that is kind of odd.

What was this part? I missed it.

401 Obdicut  Mon, Nov 7, 2011 12:29:37pm

re: #400 000G

She said that her boyfriend booked the room for her, and when she got there it was a fancy suite. She assumed her boyfriend had booked her a very fancy room to be nice, without telling her. When she met with Cain, he asked her how she liked the room, and told her he upgraded her.

The speculation is that it'll flock to Newt, but I'm having a hard time seeing that in light of the new accusations. Newt's a serial philanderer, so dumping Cain to support him doesn't seem like much of a step up.

The John Edwards candidacy worked so well last time out.
