Fickle GOP Voters Now Tiring of Newt

Clown car or roller coaster?

Howard Fineman says Republican insiders are suddenly seeing the hot air leaking out of Newt’s balloon.

The primary reason: the Palin Factor.

Some D.C.-based establishment types were preparing to reconcile themselves to former House Speaker Gingrich, if not outright endorse him, before or after the South Carolina primary last week. But according to one such insider, who asked not to be identified because of her prominent corporate lobbying role, Gingrich fatally said on Jan. 18 — three days before the primary — that he would offer former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin a “major role in the next administration if I’m president.” That one statement scared the accept-Newt, Republican-establishment types. “That sure did it for me, and I think for a lot of other people in town,” the lobbyist said.

UPDATE at 1/28/12 1:53:29 pm

Public Policy Polling says Romney now has a 10-point lead over Gingrich:

To be honest, I did think that SC just happened a week too early for Mitt.

This has happened over and over, this time it just happened at the exact moment of a primary.

Nice to know that "Republican establishment people" realize that it would be very, very bad for the country if Sarah Palin were to have a "major role" in any presidential administration.

Fine, people in the Republican establishment. How about SPEAKING UP?

It frustrates me that more Republicans don't speak up and say that Sarah Palin is not qualified for high office. It's only when it seems that there's a chance she REALLY MIGHT get such an office (e.g. head the Environmental Protection Agency in a Gingrich administration) that they speak up.

Look at the way conservatives who criticized her even AFTER the election got savaged.

Phil Plait has a good take down of this moon idea within 8 years, even while he and most of us think it is a valid goal. The bottom line is simply that financially it would destroy NASA by leaving nothing else funded, and technically we couldn't do it the way he describes in that time frame anyway.

Exactly, the level of funding behind the space program just to put the initial Mercury astronauts into orbit, let alone put Apollo 11 on the Moon, would turn most budget cutters hair white. And that was on top of the funding increases to the military for the build-up and Vietnam, domestic programs, etc.

So to hear Newt say that we could build a permanent installation on the Moon in 8 years, relying largely on the private sector, while being able to cut taxes and spending, is the worst sort of pandering imaginable.

The only physical issue that's not solvable is gravity. Unstudied (to the best of my knowledge) is whether 1/6 (lunar) gravity is sufficient to solve the physiological problems that occur in microgravity.

Yes. And while I think Romney's probably got the job, he's gaffe-prone. That's not good in light of what the recent suffolk poll showed.

(Basically, in Romney v Obama, about half Romney's voters do so because he's running against Obama, not because it's Romney. For Obama, roughly 7/8 of voters are for Obama and only 1/8 are because he's opposed by Romney.)

On the moon you would weigh less than 20% of earth weight. We know that weightlessness is bad long term due to bone mass loss. We don't know if 20% (without special effort at exercising) would be enough to stabilize at some point.

It might be a good idea to find that out before setting up a 51st state with thousands of people./

As to space, it is not technically difficult to have a long term space station with centrifugal gravity, like in the movie 2001 and others. We just haven't gotten that far to need it yet.

Mittens is getting used to standing up to a bully and lobbing Newt's shit back at him. But he still comes off as rather wooden and smug, which is going to be a sharp contrast to Obama being seen as a friendly and likable guy. It's a bit like the difference between Bush and Kerry: Obama's the guy you could see having a beer with you, Romney's the guy who would insult you for drinking something meant for "poor folks."

58 engineer cat  Sat, Jan 28, 2012 2:53:33pm

mitt's original plan called for keeping in the middle, dominating easily in the primaries, and developing a middle of the road attack that would tread carefully so that it didn't alienate the left or the right: "the president's a nice guy, but he doesn't have a clue how to run the country"

but newt and sarah aren't gonna allow him to do that. in fact, they've declared him to be the enemy, and are aiming the copious hate reserves of wingnuttia directly at mitt and the republicans who are supporting him and attacking newt. this is much worse that hillary attacking barack, and a textbook plan for losing an election

Obama is charismatic, which I've come to believe is the number one requirement of a president. Romney isn't.

I can't help but think the recent attempted storm by Arizona's Brewer was actually the first of several attempts to reduce Obama's reputation of being, well, a nice guy. An attempt to sour some of his charisma. If so we'll see more such confrontations.

I'm not so sure that it was a hit orchestrated by the party at large, but I'm willing to believe that it was partially her intention to make him lose his cool on camera, even if only to make her the "victim" and thus boost her status amongst the party base.

But if the effort was to make him look anything other than friendly and personable, then it faily miserably. She's the one on camera with a pinched face and pointed finger, while he's got that friendly look on his face we've seen so many times. The GOP's gonna have to try a lot harder to cultivate the "angry black man" image if that's their intent.

63 BeenHereAwhile  Sat, Jan 28, 2012 2:59:55pm

Frank Schaeffer has the best take I've seen on Newt's pandering to the target base of the Republican primary:

[...] What he's really doing is sending signals to 3 overlapping constituencies that now control the Republican Party: The "Pro-Israel" Lobby; The Reconstructionist/Dominionist Lobby and The Conservative Roman Catholic Lobby. [...]

[...] Wanting to outdo the rest of the Republican field on support for the hardliners in the State of Israel Gingrich told America that the Palestinian people are really a fiction an "invented people", illegitimate and don't actually exist.

Not wanting to let the far right down on his purity when it comes to abortion politics Gingrich corrected himself on when "life begins" and got his "position" in line with the American Roman Catholic bishops and declared that when he said it "begins" with the implantation of the fertilized egg in the uterine wall what he really meant was that it begins with fertilization, thus putting himself squarely in the corner with the extremist bishops who would like to lump the pill in with abortion as a means that " destroys a life."

And when it comes to the rule of law Gingrich advocates the arrest of judges that rule against "Christian values."[...]

Subsequent to Schaeffer writing the above, Gingrich is now saying that within 2 hours of becoming president, the US Embassy in Israel will move to Jerusalem.

Schaeffer's writing may offend you, but he's been there & done that. . .

The man's worked in Chicago, dealt with the politics there. I'm sure that he's faced more scenarios than a few bitchy white women trying to talk down to him in his time there. And Brewer is already viewed, even in her own state, as an self-important idiot.

I was playing another long anticipated and extremely fun game called Skyrim. Unlike Star Wars: The Old Republic, this game is played entirely offline with computer characters and is thus free of wickedness, or so I believed. Through toil, dedication, and a seemingly endless quantity of soft drinks, I managed to carry my swarthy Dragonborn character to level 31, when he encountered in his wanderings a gentleman forbidding him access to a mine.

With some convincing, my character agreed to clear the mine of monsters and with my steady leadership and quick wits managed to accomplish the task.

Upon emerging from the mine and informing the aforementioned gentleman of the completion of the mission, a new option appeared in the dialog menu for my character to ask him: "Are you interested in me?" I clicked it. Who wouldn't be interested in the Dragonborn on his quest to crush badness into the ground one skull at a time, I reasoned, especially if this was some sort of spy upon whose traits my character pounced with some sort of mental radar-like impulse.

The man then said, "Why wouldn't I be? Are you interested in me?" I was, indeed. A prelude to treachery surely forthcoming, as already I'd slain a number of assailants seeking to prevent my character from saving the world. Was this a Thalmor agent? A member of the Dark Brotherhood seeking to fulfill a contract, perhaps? I licked my lips and hovered my hands over the keys that would deliver this man to his final, magically produced icicle-pierced fate. I clicked "Yes."

I see the reply. "It's settled then. Brief as life can be in Skyrim, at least we'll have each other." Wait, what? This wasn't coup de grace, it was tête-à-tête! The game snuck me into turning gay, and I guess French, somehow? Thanks a heap, Tony "Too Late" Perkins, for your belated warnings about the hidden threat of video game homosexuality.

I think she just wanted to sell her books.

I think that's a large part of it, but by playing the "victim" because Obama was ticked off about her book, she gets a two-fer: She looks "brave" for standing up to him and she gets people wondering what was in her book that so pissed him off.

Clearly that worked with wingers, considering her book sales apparently increased considerably as a result. The rest of us just rolled our eyes at what a rude little idiot she is. 'Tis a painful thing to see the state of our country when such behavior makes one a great financial profit.

The worst quest I've seen so far in Skyrim is a Daedric Lord's demand that, in exchange for a suit of heavy ebony armor, I should deceive my companion into accompanying me to a remote mountain peak, where I was supposed to magically trap her, torture her, and then kill her, just to show how ruthless and evil I was.

I passed on that one! I like to play goody-goody characters. But in Skyrim, the factions are all so murky and dark, that you can't help doing things that are ethically questionable. It's for the greater good, I always tell myself, as I kill the 100th idealistic Stormcloak soldier with a big hammer blow to the nose.

It is, or rather, every choice you make comes out as "good" or "evil" by some arbitrary scale. Like how, even if nobody sees you, you still get punished for stealing items marked as "owned."

Well, there goes every adventure or HOG style game made. The rule there is "if it isn't nailed down, take it." Then, they have your character say "I found a screwdriver." No, you didn't find a screwdriver, you stole it.

Still, since at that point I'm usually in a creepy deserted house/amusement park/mental institution/nasty hospital pitting my wits against an evil psychopath, I don't make moral distinctions.

Well, most of the "owned" items are in settlements or in random people's houses, so it's counted as "stealing."

The karma system wasn't really all that popular amongst the fans, especially as several achievements could only be unlocked if you planned out your game to be a serious dick, a neutral non-entity, or an earthly saint. Thankfully, they demoted it for New Vegas and brought back the reputation system from the first two games, so now the only places it matters is in getting certain companions and in the ending slides.

Even though in some ways it's frustrating, the lack of impact you have in Skyrim on larger events is much more 'realistic' than the "You decide the fate of everyone, everywhere" aspect of Fallout. All the "Fallout" games have a background of 'destiny' to them-- you're 'the chosen one', your descendant is real important, etc.

In Skyrim, you're the Dragonborn, but that and a gold will buy you an Orcish arrow. You're not going to convince anyone to follow you by shouting at them. You get the political power other people give you. At the end, you are possibly in a position to start jockeying for leadership. Possibly.

It's interesting.

That's another great thing about New Vegas, except with the Independent ending, you don't wind up ruling anything at the end. The NCR treats you as just another soldier, if a very useful one. Same with the Legion, where regardless of whether Caesar or his Legate is ruling, you just end up a high-placed grunt. And you end up as Mr. House's lieutenant and successor in his ending, but there's no guarantee he'll ever die.

We could tear a page from Heinlein and make the moon a penal colony.

I agree. And yes, I remember that Barbara Bush had said something negative about Sarah Palin. I admire Mrs. Bush for that.

It's breathtaking just how consequential it could be if Gingrich has the opportunity to hold true to what he said, and give Palin a "prominent role" in his administration. If she were (e.g.) Secretary of Energy, or the Department of Health and Human Services, or even "only" the Department of Transportation, she would get to make some very big decisions, that would have real effects on real people.

Peaceful protest update: About 2,000 Occupy protesters take to Oakland streets, threaten to seize vacant building

Oakland police Officer Jeff Thomason says about 10 people were arrested when some in the crowd started throwing objects at police.

Oakland officials said about 250 people were in the group when the protest started around noon Saturday. But KCBS-AM reports the crowd has since grown to about 2,000.

The group was being monitored by dozens of Oakland police officers, as well as officers from nearby police agencies. Police began firing tear gas and flash bang grenades as things began to get out of hand.

This means that four of my six siblings (or at least their families) are now converted.

Oh...and...bow ties are cool.

I was almost embarrassed for her to tell her that I'm also a fan; what could be more uncool than your 55-year-old uncle liking the same things you like?

Why not old ladies?
Why not more young women?
Why not the disabled?

Oh, right, because those people rely on a stable, law-driven society for their own personal safety. In a state of anarchy, they would all have to find a physically strong person to protect them, and something to offer that person for the protection.

This is only a good scheme if you are the physically strong person, and only as long as you are physically strong.

At which point the anarchy is over, replaced by brutal despotism.

That's what the stupid kids don't understand. Anarchy is not sustainable, only transitory. :waves at the Anon dipshits:

We'd have anarchy briefly, which would give way to the warlord despots. If they could stabilize, then we'd end up with monarchy in the second generation. Sooner or later, enlightenment would hit (only took thousands of years last time), and we'd start getting democratic-republican law-driven government again.

So the anarchists could start calling for anarchy again because they don't like having to follow rules.

In the meantime, mankind has slid back into the dark ages, because only under a fairly law-driven society with protections for the greater part of the population can we have innovation and advance.

We need to press Mitt on what role he sees for Sarah Palin in his administration. It's a win-win: he disses Sarah, he enrages the teabaggers. He says she gets a post and everyone else jumps ship.

Those creationists were pretty obsessed they ain't here anymore. I wouldn't say that those who opposed them were in any sense 'obsessed'.

I wouldn't say that either. But those creationists, boy did they ever take every opportunity to obsessively call others 'obsessed' whenever they linked stories on creationism or evolution. I don't think they appreciated the irony of that either.

It's simply not obsessive to call someone else obsessed. That might be knee-jerk, reflexive, conditioned, unthinking, etc., but 'obsessed' doesn't make any sense in that context.

Who is 'we'?

Are you still claiming to be principled against violence while creepily enjoying videos of women being assaulted?

That's a good one.

I dunno. For a time there, the creationist crew did seem pretty obsessed with calling other people obsessed.

Okay. Call it whatever you want. The English language is crying in a corner again, though.

Poor thing. The interwebs years have been hard on her.

It did that after the Normans took over Britain. It's gotten much thicker skin since then.

Nah, that was just like English dating a French guy for awhile and picking up a few phrases from him to throw around.

The niftiest part of that is the food stuff.

Since the Normans were the ruling class, the words for the foods are all french-- beef, mutton, etc. The words for the animals are all from old english-- cow, sheep, etc. Class division wrought in language. Kinda nifty.

From where I stand, the two of you qualify as a "we", oui??

Except for your support for violent extremists who pepper-spray women in the face, of course. That kind of fucks up your idea of yourself as being principled. Or rather, it doesn't fuck up your idea of yourself, which is even creepier.

Yeah, this.

Cons and confederates are getting exactly what they deserve in Newt/Palin/Santorum, and the rest of the stupid bigots.

They all represent them, quite well.

Speaking of irony, Killgore has already stated that his apparently stupid comment was actually just a joke so there's really no need to try to defend it anymore.

The Republican Party's task is to thread a political needle -- find a candidate irrational enough to placate the ideologically self-serving corporate-controlled conservative base as well as the homophobic extremists of the Religious Right, the racist never-say-die birther contingent, and the xenophobic, secession-happy Tea Party loons, yet rational enough to satisfy the rest of America.

The current batch of potential Republican candidates is so pathetically weak and so obsessed with coddling billionaires, religious fanatics, and tea party extremists, Obama needs to be concerned about becoming complacent in his preparations for the 2012 campaign.

Newt "Blame the Media" Gingrich and Mitt "Greed is Good" Romney have been attempting to squeeze through the needle's eye, as evidenced by their commitment to the philosophy of political contrarianism -- if Obama is for it, they will be against it, no matter what it happens to be ... even if it is a policy or program that they once championed. In an effort to garner support from both moderates and tea party/conservative extremists, Mitt has been flip-flopping more frequently than a freshly-hooked fish on land. And it would appear that Romney's Mormon faith can't pass the Republican Party's Christian purity test. With Newt, we get a sanctimonious, hypocritical race-baiter who is long on ego, short on ethics.

Most Americans can only tolerate a limited amount of inane and irrational commentary from our candidates for national office. With Santorum, we would be inundated with a daily barrage of sanctimonious and socially regressive religious doctrine-driven societal intolerance, comic book-level analyses of complex issues, and delusional tripe based on unbridled scientific and historical ignorance of the topics being discussed.

Ron Paul's brand of Libertarianism is so extreme that it borders on anarchism, making him a tea party favorite, but simultaneously completely unappealing to just about everyone else.

Bottom line: The Republican Party, anxiously awaiting the arrival of a rational, viable candidate for the 2012 general election for the presidency, is giving their modern day interpretation of "Waiting for Godot".
