This happens to me often when using Chrome as well.

DADT next...hey Republicans...this is what inclusiveness looks like.

7 JamesWI  Thu, Sep 6, 2012 3:08:25pm

LOL.....someone is butthurt tonight: Asked if he'd watched any of the Democratic convention, including former President Bill Clinton's speech Wednesday night, Romney he hadn't "so far." Asked if he would watch Obama's speech, Romney curtly replied, "Uh, don't plan on it."

He accused Obama of not delivering on plans to create jobs, reduce the deficit and jumpstart the economy. "I think this is a time for him not to start restating new promises but to report on the promises he made," Romney said. "I think he wants a promises reset."

A "promises reset"......that sort of sounds like.....an Etch-a-Sketch moment?

And forget all that stuff Republicans said about how horrible it was that Democrats responded to Republican lies during their convention. Claiming that the other party isn't supposed to "campaign" at that time.

More "Good for me, not for thee" from the GOP.

8 darthstar  Thu, Sep 6, 2012 3:09:57pm

Not only do the Democrats talk about the wars, they bring out actual veterans.

Mitt's been watching reruns of Jersey Shore all week while he hasn't been campaigning.

Mitt's got people do to the watching for him. Gotta get back to the yacht party.

12 Dark_Falcon  Thu, Sep 6, 2012 3:12:35pm

Lots of left-wing meat tossing today. Mitt's ad people should mine it for little gems that can be used as part of attack ads. Nothing like pounding the other guy with the words of his own convention.

The Republican Convention was a red meat clusterfuck.

Good phrase "promises reset", and there's no reason for Mitt to watch Obama's speech. He needs to leave that to his campaign people and concentrate on campaigning.

Hell, they can just pick words at random or cut them off mid-sentence. Mitt's already built a whole campaign doing that.

Like the Republican Convention wasn't a red meat fuck fest.

Democrats' "red meat": "We shouldn't treat gay people and immigrants like second-class citizens"

Republicans' red meat: "We need an AMERICAN as President"

Little gems like, "Mitt Romney is a liar." Well, it's possible...I mean, his campaign is having so much buyer's remorse they might actually start airing attack ads against him as the ones they're using on Obama seem to be backfiring.

Is this the level of attention we can expect from a Romney presidency? He's in the battle of his life right now and he claims he pays no attention to his opponent, the guy he will be meeting in debates soon? Really? He's either lying again or a truly shitty tactician unwilling to do the homework and research necessary.

From Concord New Hampshire today, Mitt Romney remarked on what Obama should say tonight...

"Obama removed the gainful employment stipulation in the welfare requirement"

"Obama stole billions from Medicare"

"Obama doesn't view the word like other Americans"

Tactics!

Won't defend private citizens against the vile vitriol of the right wing hate machine (Sandra Fluke) either, unwilling to hold a given position long enough to avoid pandering to people who want to hear the exact opposite.

Sununu Thinks Obama Camp Lying About Cost of Michelle Obama's Dress

Former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu questioned reports that the Tracey Reese dress Michelle Obama wore for her convention address Tuesday night cost $350 on a conference call with reporters Wednesday. Sununu accused the Obama campaign of peddling several lies, including the cost of the dress: "somehow I don't think that's the truth either."

The Obama campaign hasn't released the cost of the dress, but many media outlets have reported that dresses by Tracy Reese generally start around $350.

Like John McCain talking about starting wars in Iran, Syria, Iraq (again), China, Russia, etc... Oh, wait...that was just some obscure delegate from the RNC. But since Mitt Romney hasn't given a foreign policy speech of his own, we'll just have to assume that John McCain was speaking with his full support and blessing and that he holds the same views about diplomacy.

The cost of all the fine suits far outweighs the cost of one dress. Jeeze people, get it right!

Though, I'm personally not a fan of jacquard, it has a heavy hand. It did look great on her though. And all the compliments on her dress, her demeanor, her speech...it just riles the red base, don't it. They can't stand a woman splurging once in awhile for a nice dress and dominating in it at the same time.

Talking to a group of Philadelphia teachers in May, Romney said, "If you had a class size of five, that would be terrific. If you have a class size of 50, that would be impossible."

Uh oh. He said Romney said "class size doesn't matter." We're doomed!

Hmm.

"I came into office and talked to people and said, 'What can we do to improve our schools?'" Romney said at his Thursday event. "And a number of folks said we need smaller classroom sizes, that will make the biggest difference."

Romney went on to cite a study that showed no correlation between classroom size and performance, naming schools in Cambridge, Massachusetts as an example.

"The schools in the district with the smallest classroom sizes had students performing in the bottom 10%," Romney said. "Just getting smaller classrooms didn't seem to be the key."

Nobody's ever said that having smaller class sizes eliminates the possibility for individual students in those classes to test in the bottom 10%. This is a classic example of a politician using statistics to misinform the electorate through a bait and switch. His typically undereducated conservative target audience hears that and assumes he's actually saying something about average class performance when he's doing nothing of the kind. All he's doing is cherry picking the worst performing individual students, which exist everywhere, and characterizing smaller class sizes by the fact that they still exist.

Columbia Journalism Review:When factcheckers get trigger-happy
A checklist to help journalists decide when to take aim

Is there such a thing as too much factchecking? Factcheck.org described former President Bill Clinton’s speech to the Democratic convention Wednesday evening as a “fact-checker’s nightmare” in part because, “with few exceptions… his stats checked out.” Rather than concede that it had little material to work with, however, The Associated Press manufactured a “fact check” of Clinton that focused far too heavily on omitted context and possible counter-arguments to his opinions rather than untruths or errors—and even managed to work in a gratuitous Monica Lewinsky reference that invoked Clinton’s reputation for factual slipperiness.
...
The debate over Ryan’s recreational habits became even more inane yesterday when The Atlantic’s James Fallows published reader speculation that Ryan was lying back in April 2009 about his record of climbing mountains with 14,000-foot elevations in Colorado—a claim that was both trivial and apparently wrong.
...
As factchecking moves closer to the journalistic mainstream, it’s important that journalists are careful in what they label as “factchecks” and what statements they choose to scrutinize. Otherwise, the media could dilute and devalue a practice that should be an important part of campaign coverage.

Oh I agree. Waiting to get something done can suck, especially if it's elective surgery. I had to wait 4 painful months to a get knee fixed because although a big issue it wasn't an emergency. I did not however have to worry one wit about what it was going to cost me or pay beyond the 30 a month for some extended medical I got through my job at the time.

However when I did wake up on day with a great pain in my groin which within hours was diagnosed as a hernia and an emergency I was in surgery in less then 24 hours. This was in a rural area and the doctor my local emergency department sent me to (2 hours away) waited past his normal office hours for me to get there and the hospital scheduled me in before all of the other planned surgeries the next day.

It ended up that it wasn't a hernia but a gland that super swelled for some reason. Not something that was easily figured out before they opened me up but yeah, even so I couldn't have gotten better gov't funded care in that instance.

I don;t know, I suppose it's fair game on some level. Although it's not really important a lot of people made a big deal that RNC didn't mention Afghanistan or whatever. Although these conventions are just window dressing for public display, what they chose to display or not is open to discussion and criticism. It's not a big deal but it says something about the desired focus of the event.

Only a complete asshole would rate the overall effectiveness of smaller class sizes by a single district's inability to completely prevent every last student from testing in the bottom 10%.

This is how Republicans operate though. They use a technically true but meaningless finding as the basis for making inferences that the finding in no way supports. They can get away with this because their supporters are by and large either incredibly stupid, irredeemably mendacious, or both.

Not totally off topic - a new science paper raises some interesting questions:

Early Cannibalism Tied to Territorial Defense?

The earliest known instance of cannibalism among hominids occurred roughly 800,000 years ago. The victims, mainly children, may have been eaten as part of a strategy to defend territories against neighbors, researchers report online in the Journal of Human Evolution. [...]

The cannibalism in question was discovered in the Gran Dolina cave site of Spain’s Atapuerca Mountains. Eudald Carbonell of the University of Rovira and Virgili in Spain and colleagues found evidence of butchering on bones belonging to Homo antecessor, a controversial species that lived in Europe as early as 1.2 million years ago. Because no other hominid species has been found in the region at the same time as the butchered bones, the victims must have been eaten by their own kind, the team concluded in 2010 in the journal Current Anthropology (PDF).

There's always been the silly and simple angle to politics: dubious claims, factually challenged ads, silly conventions, gotcha sound bites etc. but there also used to be a more serious side to be found. I recently rewatched Buckley debating Chomsky (it's worth watching just a few minutes to remember what adult discussions used to look like). Although Hitchens was more bombastic he was also a holdover of the era of more serious adult debate which doesn't really exist anymore. Although the wingnuts have been more open in abandoning their intellectuals I think the problem is widespread in modern culture. There's not much open honest exchange of political ideas. It's been abandoned in favor of simplistic populism and showmanship.

As I trawl the GOP/Conservative sites, I'm detecting what I perceive of as a mounting, though quiet, hysteria. I think perhaps unconsciously, they're bracing themselves for a loss.

Conventions are interesting, but more for political junkies. The debates are what's gonna count. If Romney comes off poorly, he won't win and though the GOP/Conservatives don't like to address it, I feel they have a fear that President Obama might end up wiping the floor with Mitt during the debates.

As to polling, I myself will be looking at polls more seriously after the debates; if Romney is ahead at that point, he'll likely win. If President Obama is ahead, then it's four more years.

And that's when the wingnuts will lose it completely.

I would say it's definitely explained more in the books. Foo Fighters. I saw them live once... In a very small venue, like a decade ago. It was very fun, everyone knew the words, hot and sweaty, lots a dancin... but they (kinda lamely) threatened to leave the stage twice, stopped the show-twice, if people 'didn't stop dancing so hard.' I like a lot of their songs, but I'll never forget that.

I watched that recently...wasn't a bad movie. Kids killing kids...great entertainment! Seriously, though...I thought the teen actors were pretty good for the most part.

Took me three tries to get through to the ending, I kept losing interest and doing other more interesting things like washing dishes. I finally gritted my teeth and sat down and watched the entire rip end to end, and in the final analysis still could not have cared less who "won."

Personally I find the YouTube "Survival games" (a Hunger Games ripoff MineCraft survival deathmatch) much more entertaining, AntVenom is now reigning champion three times in a row!

I would say it's definitely explained more in the books. I just saw the movie the other day and while I thought it was decent I don't think I would have looked at it in the same way if I hadn't read the books and knew about all the details behind it. The movie followed the book quite well but it left out a whole lot.

Just to add, the movie didn't get into much detail as to why things were set up as they were. It showed the wall surrounding District 12 but only alluded to how the capital controlled it and the population. In the book a whole lot of the first part covers that aspect as well as Katniss and Gale's expeditions in and out. The movie pretty much jumped right to the lottery without all of that detail.

re: #150 Major Tom

It's not a subtle point in the film, and that's not my issue. It's the thousands of acres of forest, and starvation. It's the ability to just create something out of thin air, and the rampant scarcity... Maybe these things are better explained in the books, or are being saved for plot color in future movies, but I didn't get much of an explanation in the film. It was hard to believe a society like that could/would exist is all i'm sayin.

The technology used by the game-makers is never explored from an engineering standpoint (for that matter, nobody explains FTL drives in science fiction, but faster than light travel is a given). As far as the thousands of acres of forest etc, the movie takes place several hundred years in the future after the fall of modern society. Most of North America is in ruins and has been reclaimed by nature (like Germany during the Hundred Years War) and parts of it are under water after the ice caps melted. Starvation is a control (see Stalin's policy towards the Ukraine during collectivisation) and along with the Games, is used to keep the rebellious districts in line.

Apparently, Dark took exception with my prediction that President Obama is going to carve Mitt up like Jack the Ripper; taking what we know about Mitt, his everchanging positions, and his complete lack of humility, humbleness, and empathy, I'd put money on it.

re: #151 Killgore Trout

I think that's correct but there's also another dimension.

Here's a recent, serious debate. It's an hour long during which Dan Savage completely destroys Brian Brown with facts while Brown casts the anti-gay movement as the real victims, but it's cordial and both sides get their say.

[spoilers]

You really do run into exposition problems adapting a book that is experienced from a first person point of view and has extensive internal monologues that reveal a lot of the back story. Katnis is a remarkable and incredibly competent person, but she is also badly emotionally damaged (and becomes increasingly so as she experiences combat and becomes a squad leader in the civil war). I'm not sure how much of that you can bring to the screen. Thank God they found an actress with the kind of ability Jennifer Lawrence has.

Read the books. They are definitely aimed at our war-as-entertainment culture.

The third book, Mockingjay, should not even remotely be considered Young Adult Fiction. It is military science fiction, and the body count is horrific. Suzanne Collins is making a statement...and war is not pretty, the "good guys" are not always good and even the survivors may not come home intact.

Mockingjay was brutal. I was glad to see it, to be honest. After the drivel that is Twilight, it was nice to see a YA book series end on such a bloody, violent, utterly harsh note, with definite effects on the lead characters.

I only found out about the details of the Corn Laws quite recently (due to my peripatetic childhood). A good reference for people who believe that the protection of private property and the ability to profit from the same can only benefit the population at large.

The English really had some winners with respect to laws and Ireland. After the massive and genocidal clearances of Ireland (the population was cut by more than 50% in 10 years) in the 17th Century, many Irish woman and girls (including nuns seized from the convents) were sent as breeding stock to Barbados and the huge sugar plantations. The slave masters were already in the habit of raping African women, and the Irish women got the same treatment, although they were also deliberately and forcibly bred with African slaves because mixed race girls were in high demand in brothels. The English Parliament in 1681 passed a law...“forbidding the practice of mating Irish slave women to African slave men for the purpose of producing slaves for sale.” This was because the practice interferred with the profits of the slave traders.

Predictably, the race baitors have used this as an example of "ZOMG the Black peeples is raping teh white women".

Actually, violence and rape was fairly universal against both black and white women. In all cases here, it was white English landlords who had black and white women as young as 12 years old used as sexual slave chattels. Utterly, horrifically sickening.

Yes. Some fans were disappointed that there was no fairy tale happy ending. Collins would not have been true to her story if she tried to do that. War has consequences and she was, as you said, brutal in presenting those consequences. I knew she was onto something when I saw Iraq and Afghanistan veterans debating the end of Mockingjay.

re: #229 celticdragon

Actually, violence and rape was fairly universal against both black and while women. In all cases here, it was white English landlords who had black and white women as young as 12 years old used as sexual slave chattels. Utterly, horrifically sickening.

Rape rape, or fake rape?//

Kirsten Gillibrand and there are more too.

You should see Gillibrand on the Daily Show from yesterday. She has a very bright future above what she has already achieved

I think the Irish case comes across as awful because the victims are, to put it crudely, indistinguishable from "average successful white people". In other words, it could happen to you (if you happen to be far enough away from the priorities of power brokers).

To be fair to the Brits at the time (including the politicians), I think there were quite a few people who wanted to help but genuinely didn't have the physical or intellectual capability to do so.

re: #151 Killgore Trout

I think that's correct but there's also another dimension.

And baiting & trolling in forums like this. It's impossible have an open honest exchange of ideas by oneself. Television is going to give us what we indicate we want, what we tune into. News is no longer news, it's for-profit entertainment and people tune in by the millions. If we want adult discussions, then we can start by refusing to participate in, or tune into, those which aren't. If someone can't or won't do that, then s/he is part of the problem.

re: #137 goddamnedfrank

Good for them, but you'll notice that what Politifact doesn't do is go on to dissect the incredibly specious basis for Romney's claim. Only a complete asshole would rate the overall effectiveness of smaller class sizes by a single district's inability to completely prevent every last student from testing in the bottom 10%.

Is it possible that the district chose to put the lowest-testing kids in the smallest classes on purpose, so they'd get the most individualized attention and get up to grade level?

Just a thought.
