Well, I think it was a given that the Dems would do better with music. Really not a day that goes by in a presidential campaign where you hear a musician upset about the Republicans using their tunes. Can't think of a time I've heard that with the Dems.

I like Obama and that feels really weird to me. I was one of those guys who thought the country was done for when he was elected... Now I'm feeling like the Repugs are out to kill us all, and hey... Barry's all right, man.
I still think he's a little bit utopianist and I was kind of turned off by all the mooney-eyed True Believers in the audience during his speech (although there were some hot ladies in there :D ) but the Democrat's message has been "Hey... The other guys are liars, and we actually live on the same planet you do. We can prove it!" They've gone positive, in a way, and they've gone on the attack too, for once. It's about time.

Re Obama's speech - I'm not sure how to explain this, but there were so many good speeches that said what needed to be said, it was hard to see how he could possibly top them. The other maddening thing is, those surrogates could say things Obama would never be allowed to get away with without being concern-trolled to death. So, in a way, his hands were kind of tied. That sucked. Personally, I was glad there was finally a mention of climate change, but disappointed with the cringeworthy mention of "clean coal" and all the natural gas talk. I understand why it had to be there, however, and am well aware the alternative is the pro-pollution, denier pathology of the GOP.
True progress can only be made when the teabags and their enablers are completely drummed out of power and discredited forever. Fate, please let it happen before it's too late and the damage is done :/

Religious creep into politics is not just an American problem:
But with Hindu nationalism, says Nagaraj, “history and faith are being made to share the same bed” -- somewhat like with creationism in America. What might be an antidote to such divisive readings of the Ramayana? For Nagaraj, the answer lay in not just a scolding based on the ideals of the Indian Constitution (a point of view that sounds patronizing to many right-wing Hindus), but in turning instead to the many “folk” Ramayanas of India, which often poke fun at the central characters of the epic, and see their stories as aesthetically malleable structures to be continuously reinterpreted. For Nagaraj, “the recovery of difference is an effective way of overcoming those threats posed by the essentialist use of symbols.” The pluralism of the Indian Constitution might be seen as just the codification, in the modern language of rights, secularism and democracy, of the natural pluralism of Indian history.

You know I thought pretty much the same thing. Obama should have reached out to give GWB some cred. I think it would have been a politically good move. After all GWB is the one guy who prognosticated that Iraq would lead to widespread political upheaval in the middle east and usher in an era of democracy that otherwise would never have happened. GWB destroyed the status quo and that is why the conservative establishment shuns him now. I think Obama should have reached out to him for being dumb and bold enough to kick over the tables.

Yeah, I was just playing around with some electoral maps. Unless something big happens to change some "likely-blue" states to red, it's looking to me like Romney needs to win both Ohio and Florida......just to have a chance at winning.
If he loses one of those (especially Florida), he basically has to win ALL of the other states currently labeled as "toss-ups" ......and just going by RealClearPolitics poll averages, most of those currently have small (think 1-2%) leads for Obama. And that includes Florida....which doesn't look good for Romney, considering these polls happened right after the convention held in that state.

From GWB on 11/06/2003.
Sixty years of Western nations excusing and accommodating the lack of freedom in the Middle East did nothing to make us safe -- because in the long run, stability cannot be purchased at the expense of liberty. As long as the Middle East remains a place where freedom does not flourish, it will remain a place of stagnation, resentment, and violence ready for export. And with the spread of weapons that can bring catastrophic harm to our country and to our friends, it would be reckless to accept the status quo.

It strikes me that the Overton window has shifted so far right that people aren't appreciating how un-progressive (outside of women's health issues) this convention's presentations were.
Obama's speech also referenced DADT repeal
You’re the reason a young immigrant who grew up here and went to school here and pledged allegiance to our flag will no longer be deported from the only country she’s ever called home, why selfless soldiers won’t be kicked out of the military because of who they are or who they love; why thousands of families have finally been able to say to the loved ones who served us so bravely: “Welcome home, welcome home.”
There's also the presentation by Barney Frank, whereas Romney was forced to fire his campaigns only openly gay staffer earlier this year. Also Zach Wahls and Tammy Baldwin also touched on gay equality:
One of the speeches that came earlier in the evening was from Zach Wahls, an Iowa youth with lesbian parents who gained notoriety for speaking out against a proposed ban on marriage equality in his state. He’s also an Eagle Scout who’s been pushing the Boy Scouts to end its gay ban.
...
Baldwin’s speech marked the first time an openly gay U.S. Senate candidate spoke before a major party’s national convention.

They're still doing ads here in Virginia but I've seen more pro Obama ads than anything. What I've seen the least of though is pro Mitt ads. And I think that hurts his cause here. People here in Northern Va are doing pretty well compared with other parts of the country. We're the population center of the state and while we generally like Obama I think, we wouldn't mind seeing Mitt make a case for Mitt and we really haven't seen ads that do that. I separate the two types.
It's like this:
1.) Pro Obama ads

I liked Castro. Had shades of Obama's 2004 Keynote there because there was a happy optimism to his speech. I hope he runs for higher office in Texas and I think he will. Apparently, he's speaking at my alma mater on Saturday to help get the Obama campaign kicked off there. Would be going but my kid brother's LL game is the same day and as much as I would love to see Castro speech, I'm a big brother first.

I hope so. Anyway...they've got the Ayn Rand vote. But maybe Romney assumes a congressman is enough to hold the state. Maybe we'll see a repeat of Reagan v. Mondale...and Wisconsin will go to the GOP...but only Wisconsin.
RCP's poll average currently has it for Obama at 1.6%. But the polls for Wisconsin only go through 8/21, so maybe Romney's camp has seen some numbers we haven't?
It does seem odd though, considering some of the states where they are running the ads (New Hampshire, Nevada) seem to be leaning blue a lot more heavily than Wisconsin.

Because gay, homosexual, and sexual orientation are irrelevant when it comes to love. This was consistent throughout the DNC...all the speakers used the "nobody should be biased against because of who they love" approach. It's not about sexuality, it's about love. Period.

That's because Mitt doesn't run ads that emphasize Mitt, because in order to do so, he'd actually have to have something substantive that he's running on.
Same thing as the primaries, where he just bombarded the battleground states with attack ads against Gingrich and Santorum. The difference now is that he's finally facing someone who has the funds to buy just as many ads.

Interesting. I think they really were having trouble filling it, and the arena setting worked pretty well for Mrs. Obama and President Clinton...and there really was a storm threat. When I was on the way to the doc's today for my follow up, NPR had Tom Periello, guy used to represent Virginia in the House for the district that includes UVA but outside of that is pretty conservative. Also of note: Honey Boo Boo actually BEAT the Republican Convention on the broadcast networks and Fox News
In the demo, Honey Boo Boo did even better. The half-hour series' showing among adults 18-49 bested all other cable outings for the night -- including coverage of the Republican National Convention -- to pull a 1.3 rating.
Fox News gave the show its closest competition with a 1.2 adults rating in the same time period. On the broadcast networks, Honey Boo Boo bested ABC and CBS' demo showing for the RNC combined and topped NBC by two-tenths of a point. Aggregate coverage of the RNC across networks obviously eclipsed Honey Boo Boo considerably.

It is the worst of the worst in reality TV. Morbidly obese rednecks convinced they are the epitome of beauty, toddler beauty pageants, teen pregnancy (One of the kids in the show is pregnant, and the matriarch of the family first got pregnant at 15....and the husband is like 8 years older than her, so who knows how he's not in prison right now). What's become of TLC anyhow? I always watched more of Discovery and History but TLC once upon a time had some educational stuff. I remember they were the network that gave us Sarah Palin's Alaska and that was probably the worst show I've ever seen. I've never watched the show, I only know this because they're in People magazine this week, but... the four kids are from four different fathers. Only two of which she married.
It's sad that when a white family can be described that way, they're salt of the earth, real Americans, the kind of people Karl Rove's ads aim to energize and Freedom Works targets them for GOTV. But when a black family can be described IN THE EXACT SAME TERMS, they're the boogiemen in those Karl Rove ads and they're who Freedom Works proposes policies to make it harder for them to vote.

And all I've learned from the History Channel lately is that the American version of Top Gear is entertaining.
I saw an episode where they each drove a small car (a Smart car, a Fiat and Scion) through Louisiana. I laughed. Watching those cars get into a tug of war with an airboat was hilarious. And I totally would have punched the guy who cut open a bag of live crawfish in the back of one of the cars just to screw with one of the other hosts.

There was a case of a suicide on the tracks in Flagstaff, Arizona, where the train comes barreling over Observatory Hill and cannot stop if it wants to in most cases...according to the report, the fellow just sat on the tracks and "made an obscene gesture with his finger" before the train hit him.

I played slow pitch softball for a friend's team in Miami. A coed team. The other team had a ringer playing center. There was a girl playing catcher. Play at the plate and he threw a frozen rope. Runner on 3rd
Pitcher throws a ball
Catcher tosses the ball back to the pitcher (who stepped forward of the mound)
Pitcher misses the toss
Ball rolls behind him towards 2nd base
Too far for the shortstop, 2nd baseman or pitcher to get to before the runner on 3rd breaks for home and scores
THE ONLY RUN OF THE GAME

Germany goes to great lengths to avoid tossing the baby of his music out with the bathwater of his anti-Semitism. And since he was dead at least 50 years before the Nazis co-opted him, one cannot say definitively how he would have related to them...
True, but that wouldn't stop the partisan attacks that would ensue if an American candidate used his music. The attacks would be made because the initial "ZOMG!!1 CANDIDATE X IS A NAZI!!1" would travel faster and further than any thinking rebuttal. That kind of tarring isn't really decent, but it often works.

Secret Service Arrests Charlotte Man For Twitter Death Threats Against Barack Obama
A North Carolina man was arrested yesterday for threatening to kill President Barack Obama in a series of Twitter messages, one of which warned that, “Ima hit president Obama with that Lee Harvey Oswald swag,” The Smoking Gun has learned.
Democratic Delegate ‘Would Like to Kill’ Mitt Romney
New York delegate Julia Rodriguez told a reporter on camera that if she bumped into Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, she “would like to kill him,” leading the U.S. Secret Service to investigate the threat.
“We are aware of it and will take the appropriate follow-up,” George Ogilvie, spokesman for U.S. Secret Service, told ABC News in a statement Thursday.
Secret Service Investigating Death Threat Against President Obama
The U.S. Secret Service and Philadelphia police are investigating a threat that was made against President Barack Obama from a city pay phone, Fox-29 reported.
Special Agent in Charge Cindy Wofford confirmed Wednesday afternoon that the Secret Service is investigating a call that came in as a 9-1-1 call from a payphone on the 100 block of East Cumberland Street in the city’s Kensington section.
The Secret Service “takes every threat seriously,” Wofford said, adding that they “are working it” with the Philadelphia police.

It's especially stupid to encourage people to leave messages overnight. They're just trying to take revenge on a 16 year old girl instead of just letting the authorities deal with it.

It's probably also to do with the actual credibility of the death threats. For example, I don't see the threat against Obama's life by the stoner on DailyKos either, probably because it was made by a guy smoking up while he waited for his Chinese food.

I have just resigned myself to the past two weeks being 'hooray for our side' love fests by both sides and their corresponding media and blog sites.
I was listening to sports radio the other day and some caller was talking about how he hated the Dallas Cowboys (apologizes to NJD). The sports radio guy asked him if he really hated them and the caller replied that it was "sports hate" and not real hate. Politics is like that....one can get their "sports hate" on for an opposing candidate but some people cross the line into real hate.

Kinda how Philly views him for the most part. Exciting player, could be an ass at times.
Two things people hold against him 'round these parts:
1. Never got the Sixers to the finals, let alone win a championship.
2. He was an outspoken black guy. Still a problem for some people in the Philly area; particularly when it comes to athletes.

Because gay, homosexual, and sexual orientation are irrelevant when it comes to love. This was consistent throughout the DNC...all the speakers used the "nobody should be biased against because of who they love" approach. It's not about sexuality, it's about love. Period.

The stats this morning make it clear that employment is not on the mend, it's barely stable. So far behind population growth it's credible to argue it's in decline.
This has never been a thing the POTUS is in a good position to fix. It's far more up to Congress and heads of companies en mass. But since this is an election year all will be looking for the men aiming for an office that is relatively incapable of repairing that. It's a little like looking to put air in the tires to prevent overheating.

What in the ever-living hell?! That "judge" is female?? Good goddamn that proves iceweasel right when she said some of the worst misogynistic are other women:
Last summer, a drunk Arizona police officer named Robb Gary Evans drove himself to a bar, flashed his badge to avoid paying cover at the door, and then walked up behind a woman, put his hand up her skirt, and ran his fingers over her genitals. A jury convicted him of sexual abuse
...
Nevertheless, Arizona trial Judge Jacqueline Hatch, who was appointed to the bench by Gov. Jan Brewer (R-AZ), decided that Evans’ actions did not warrant jail time
...
Yet, while Judge Hatch apparently did not view the disgraced former cop’s actions as particularly serious, she had some very harsh words for the woman he assaulted:Bad things can happen in bars, Hatch told the victim, adding that other people might be more intoxicated than she was.
“If you wouldn’t have been there that night, none of this would have happened to you,” Hatch said.
...
Hatch said that the victim was not to blame in the case, but that all women must be vigilant against becoming victims.“When you blame others, you give up your power to change,” Hatch said that her mother used to say.
"If you hadn't been there this wouldn't have happened?" Gee, what the hell else does that remind you of? 9_9
Figures this disgusting gender-traitor was appointed by Jan Brewer, herself the mother of a rapist.

That's easy. Because the original story was from The Blaze. Can't give them any press.
Confirmed by TPM.
Julia Rodriguez, a DNC delegate who said in a video interview with the Blaze that she would kill Mitt Romney if she saw him, should expect to be hearing from the Secret Service.
Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan confirmed to TPM on Thursday that the agency is aware of the video and is taking “appropriate follow-up measures.”
As part of that process, Secret Service personnel will try to determine Rodriquez’s intentions, as they did when they met with rocker Ted Nugent earlier this year.
In the video, Rodriguez said Romney “will destroy this country” and added that she would “like to kill him” if she ever saw him. The Secret Service’s involvement was first reported by the Daily Caller.
Rodriguez, who said on the video that she is from the Bronx, is listed as a delegate on the official Democratic website.
