5 more charged in Ft. Stewart military militia case
SAVANNAH — Four former Army soldiers and a civilian have been charged in new indictments for connections to an anti-government militia that authorities say was led by Fort Stewart troops who stockpiled weapons and talked of ultimately overthrowing the U.S. government.
A Liberty County grand jury indicted the five on charges of illegal gang activity and various counts involving theft, burglary and auto break-ins. Those crimes were committed to help fund the militia group, which called itself F.E.A.R., short for Forever Enduring Always Ready, District Attorney Tom Durden said Tuesday.
"The burglaries and entering autos, they were committed in an effort to fund F.E.A.R. and what F.E.A.R. was at least advocating they wanted to accomplish," said Durden, the top prosecutor for southeast Georgia's Atlantic Judicial Circuit. Their plans included bombing a Savannah park fountain and poisoning apple crops in the state of Washington, prosecutors say.
The new indictments Monday bring to 10 the total number of people charged in connection with the militia group.

You would think Mitt Romney would be better at foreign policy given how much time his money has spent overseas.— Andy Borowitz (@BorowitzReport) September 13, 2012

I honestly could have done without the events of the last 48 hours. If I take anything away from all that has happened, it's that Mitt Romney has done serious damage to whatever chances he still had left to win this election. I just wish people hadn't had to die for it to be possible.

David Frum -
Romney: No Apology for Misguided Obama Slam?
Politicians must pander, it goes with the job. But they mustn't leave their fingerprints all over their pandering. The Romney campaign's attempt to score political points on the killing of American diplomats was a dismal business in every respect. Disregarding every other aspect, however, it was graceless and stupid as a matter of politics.
The incident reminds of one other thing: the dangerously distorting effect of disrespect for one's political opponents.

It is reassuring that all of my progressive friends are terrified that Romney might win this election. I live in one of the reddest of red states, so the baseline is skewed but refreshing to see people so horrified and motivated.
I now see no numerical path to victory for Romney. Also glad my friends don't see it that way.

I'm going to stick my neck out with a wild speculation! "Steve Klein" is "Sam Basile"
He's this guy:
[Link: www.google.com...]
Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55, told The Associated Press in an interview outside Los Angeles that he was manager for the company that produced "Innocence of Muslims," which mocked Muslims and the prophet Muhammad and may have caused inflamed mobs that attacked U.S. missions in Egypt and Libya. He provided the first details about a shadowy production group behind the film.
Nakoula denied he directed the film and said he knew the self-described filmmaker, Sam Bacile. But the cellphone number that AP contacted Tuesday to reach the filmmaker who identified himself as Sam Bacile traced to the same address near Los Angeles where AP found Nakoula. Federal court papers said Nakoula's aliases included Nicola Bacily, Erwin Salameh and others.
Nakoula told the AP that he was a Coptic Christian and said the film's director supported the concerns of Christian Copts about their treatment by Muslims.
Nakoula denied he had posed as Bacile. During a conversation outside his home, he offered his driver's license to show his identity but kept his thumb over his middle name, Basseley. Records checks by the AP subsequently found it and other connections to the Bacile persona.

Since it's an open thread, a brief job search update -- I had an interview with a bank the other day for a financial advisor role, but I'm not confident with it. If I don't get that one, I won't shed any tears. I had filled the application out months ago and had forgotten all about it, so the fact that I've made it this far with them is an accomplishment all by itself.
The software translation company I really want to work for got back in touch today. The hiring manager will be in Austin on the 27th and we're going to meet face to face. I'm excited! I hope it goes well.
Applications are still going out regardless. Until I've got something nailed down and set in stone, I'm going to keep looking at what's out there.

Further news coming out about the attack, lending credence to the belief that the whole thing was planned:
US troops 'ambushed' at safe house
A squad of US troops despatched by helicopter across the Libyan desert to rescue besieged diplomats from Benghazi ran into a fierce overnight ambush that left a soldier and another American dead, Libyan officials said.
Accounts of the mayhem at the US consulate, where ambassador Christopher Stevens and a fourth American died after a chaotic protest over a film insulting to Islam, remain patchy.
But two Libyan officials, including the commander of a security force which escorted the US rescuers, said a later assault on a supposedly safe refuge for the diplomats appeared professionally executed.
Miscommunication which understated the number of American survivors awaiting rescue - there were 37, nearly four times as many as the Libyan commander expected - also meant survivors and rescuers found themselves short of transport to escape the second battle, delaying an eventual dawn break for the airport.
Captain Fathi al-Obeidi, whose special operations unit was ordered by Libya's authorities to meet an eight-man force at Benghazi airport, said that after his men and the US squad had found the American survivors who had evacuated the blazing consulate, the ostensibly secret safe house, an isolated villa, came under an intense and highly accurate mortar barrage.
"I really believe that this attack was planned," he said, adding to suggestions by other Libyan officials that at least some of the hostility towards the Americans was the work of experienced combatants.
"The accuracy with which the mortars hit us was too good for any regular revolutionaries."

…there is an idea of a
Patrick Bateman"Willard Romney", some kind of abstraction, but there is no real me, only an entity, something illusory, and though I can hide my cold gaze and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours ... I simply am not there. It is hard for me to make sense on any given level. My "self" is fabricated, an aberration. I am a non-contingent human being. My personality is sketchy and unformed, my heartlessness goes deep and is persistent. My conscience, my pity, my hopes disappeared a long time ago (probably at Harvard) if they ever did exist ... There has been no reason for me to tell you any of this. This confession has meant nothing ...

Spent part of this past weekend viewing the results of glaciation in south central New York state and north central Pennsylvania. Including a short walk and view of a quarry that was digging into a glacial moraine that was over a mile wide and 600' thick. Lots of former lake beds, valleys, and "odd"* canyons about due to the glaciers flowing around in that area 15,000-16,000 years ago.
* - Pine Creek Gorge is "odd" since it runs a different direction than all the other relief in the area. Due to a glacier damming up a valley and it eventually overflowed onto a plateau at a low spot and cut a new drainage.

I'd be happy with a job and a paycheck right now, but you're right. If I don't really want the job, it will suck. That's why it won't bother me if I don't get the bank position. It was one of those jobs I applied for in the beginning when I was pretty much just casting my net out there wildly.
The software translation company has been great. The two interviews I had were more like conversations with friends. I got along famously with the hiring manager (who I'll meet in person soon) and with the COO when we talked. I'd love that one, even if the money isn't the best just because I'd have a chance to help build the Austin office up, I'd get to travel, and the people and work seem interesting.

It's hard to tell. This is where the noise machine shoots itself in the foot. Mitt's comments sucked and this would have happened regardless of who the president is. However, just last week the outrageous outrage was Mitt saying the troops are unimportant, the week before that was probably some bogus Bain/tax avoidance outrage, before that it was something else. It all becomes a blur with each outrage more outrageous than the next. Each one quickly abandoned and forgotten for the newest outrage. The wingnuts do the same thing, piling one outrage on top of the other. I suppose one noise machine may eventually drown the other out but we;ll probably not even remember Mitt's comments about Libya next week when he says something about pineapple on pizza.

Yeah, I'm hearing the same thing elsewhere. The latest bleat seems to be "Why was the security not beefed up!?" They're accusing Obama of either getting intel that attacks were imminent and not acting on it or skipping the briefing and thus not taking the threat seriously.
And of course, now that it's done, they're hysterical about his not giving an immoderate speech, and then carpet-bombing Libya the same day. Egypt too, while he's at it.

re: #69 Killgore Trout
We still want to see Mitt's tax returns.

I've got to got get some paint ready for a job with the .01 percenters tomorrow, so I can't follow the thread, but you all might want to check this out:
Dan Murphy at Christian Science Monitor: There May Be No Anti-Islamic Movie At All-[Link: www.csmonitor.com...]
He makes the case that it's a dumb (actually, I thought it was a pretty decent Foley) hack job, dubbing stuff like "Islamic Terrorists" onto the soundtrack in the place of the original dialog.
You can see for yourself, if you've got the stomach for it. The YouTube vid is at: [Link: www.csmonitor.com...] and one of the early inserts is at 1:51 when the protagonist writes a nonsense "equation" on a whiteboard-- watch the lips when he says "Islamic Terrorist." Probably lots more, but why pick apart a dog turd just to find out if it's really dog shit?
BTW-- I think I read the whole thing didn't blow up until someone posted an Arabic-dubbed version of this. The sound fakery wouldn't be apparent.

Malignant Personality
(1) They are habitual liars. They seem incapable of either knowing or telling the truth about anything.
(2) They are egotistical to the point of narcissism. They really believe they are set apart from the rest of humanity by some special grace.
(3) They scapegoat; they are incapable of either having the insight or willingness to accept responsibility for anything they do. Whatever the problem, it is always someone else's fault.
(4) They are remorselessly vindictive when thwarted or exposed.
(5) Genuine religious, moral, or other values play no part in their lives. They have no empathy for others and are capable of violence. Under older psychological terminology, they fall into the category of psychopath or sociopath, but unlike the typical psychopath, their behavior is masked by a superficial social facade.

Yeah, I'm not convinced, either, but really, try taking a look at the video. The original is probably (maybe) about how the bad moe-hammids oppress the Christians because they're just born evil. (see zoom shot of bleeding girl's gold cross.) The original is probably not all that different from the dubbed version, but seriously, go look at the replaced dialog. It looks like a standard Muslim-hatin' film from the get-go, based on the visuals. So why dub in the incendiary buzzwords? As I said, WATCH THE LIPS.
Skepticism is good, but this is empirical: it's dubbed. 'Why' is another question.

True, I'll grant you that much, provided you can agree that the record of the economic success of a person prior to the current crisis is largely irrelevant to the wisdom of policies intended to correct them.
Unless, of course, one suggests that Romney's success somehow undermines the President's policies, in which case I'd be interested to learn how that works.

There's hardly any need to invoke the Oedipal polysyllabic with me, but leaving it aside:
Other than documenting the legal success of a man in earning a living and then some, what possible point can there be in releasing tax records in response to an incumbent's request to do so?
I mean, if BHO's claim to worthiness is his genius and skill and what-have-you, whereas Romney the milk-drinker (I distrust a man with no public vices, BTW) has not claimed anything more or other than that he's been a successful busnessman, whyever not should His Excellency release such proofs as may exist of his academic acumen in exchange of Romney's tax records?
After all, had Mitt cheated or dodged, surely the IRS would have taken notice by now...

There is nothing wrong with a presidential candidate being rich, but all of our rich presidents have done one of two things: ran on policies that middle class people could imagine being directly beneficial to them or came across as a "regular" person who could relate to economic struggles or could at least empathize with them. Some did both. Romney isn't doing either so his wealth combined with his policies are a double whammy. Mitt Romney's problem is that people believe he would have an economic policy with only the already rich in mind.

Um, Obama didn't run for president as an academic genius, in part, because that's not what the office calls for. As for releasing them, they would prove nothing to the wingers, just like the birth certificate didn't.
On the other hand, Romney's trying out for the head of the executive branch, you know, the one that spends money and enforces the laws of the land. I think it's a pretty good idea to know how he has treated the laws he wants to be in charge of enforcing.

The fact is that the job he's applying for has a crucial role in shaping tax policy, has submitting, veto and sign off authority on revenue bills passed into law. Therefore how he makes and handles his own money is germane and of legitimate interest to the electorate whose vote he seeks. The effective tax rate he pays along with the loopholes and tax havens he employs to shield his money would be instructive and place the candidate's own tax proposals in an informative real world context. If there is a gross disparity between the rhetoric the candidate employs about how the tax burden is distributed in this country and their own real world effective tax rate then forcing them to release their returns would help to bring that debate to the surface.

There is no reason to assume a child will assume the politics of their father and that is not the point I am making. Heck, my dad and I could not disagree more about politics.
When you skim through this little known book, you will get a sense that Mitt is just following in his dad's footsteps when it comes to being a power hungry backstabber, very comfortable at lying, with a win-at-all-costs attitude toward politics.
There is no love in Michigan for George Romney. I have never met a single person or read a newspaper story or essay singing his praises as Governor. It was good riddance and don't let the screened door hit your ass on the way out. And that was from the people in his own party.

So a guy walks into my office the other day looking for high leadership position in our company. We currently have someone in that job, but his contract is up soon and we’re not sure if we’ll be renewing it, so we decided to interview this new person and see what he’s all about. The job interview went like this:
...
US: Ok… Well… The position you are applying for involves the overseeing of extremely large amounts of money, so we typically like to see your financial records. You can also tell a great deal about a person’s integrity and responsibility levels by the way they manage their money. As this is such an important position in our company, I’m assuming you wouldn’t mind releasing your personal financial reports?
APPLICANT: If I release some of my personal financial records, you’ll just attack what’s in there. Besides, I don’t think your company really even cares about personal financial records.US: Ummmm… ok… Let’s try something else. If you were to be hired for this position, can you tell us what you would do to improve productivity in the company?
APPLICANT: I would make everything better. I would cut costs while raising profits and make everything just right.
US: That sounds good, but how would you do that? What costs would you cut? And can you provide any specifics about policies or practices that you would implement to raise profits?
APPLICANT: I don’t think I really need to tell you that right now. I’ll tell you how I would change things, but not until after I’m hired.
US: Soooo, let me make sure I have this correct. You don’t want to go into detail about your business experience, you won’t show us your financial background, AND you won’t even tell us anything specific about how you would do the job?
APPLICANT: You’ll just have to trust me.

Why would anyone believe Mitt when he says he didn't cheat on his taxes? When he was in charge of auditing for Marriot Corporation, they were fined $70 million by the IRS for a tax evasion scam that Mitt knew all about. Son of BOSS.
Mitt's idea of legal is that anything that hasn't yet been determined by the IRS to be illegal must be legal. It does not work like that with the IRS. There are a lot of examples of questionable tax loopholes that the IRS shut down years after the fact and backcharged penalties on the perps.

True enough, and it is a problem for him, especially in an age of diminished and ever-diminishing expectations.
The question is, however, this: if the incumbent's campaign is aware of illegality, at which there have been ever so many hints, why not act on it? Answer: Romney's obeyed the law, and has prospered by way of honest dealing.
The optics of the Obama administration attempting to prosecute his presidential opponent on tax charges would be bad. Very bad.

The IRA was intended to be a way for people to save for their retirement.
It was not intended to be a tax shelter for the mega rich to accummulate $100 million retirement accounts by under-reporting what was being deposited and then using insider trading information to blow up the account to 9 digits, beating the market by oh about 100 times.
And its silly to say that if the IRS hasn't shut it down, it must be legal. They have a tendency to make retroactive rulings on tax cheats.

I see these pictures of the Libyans in Benghazi holding signs apologizing to the US over the death of our ambassador and Libya's biggest supporter of the revolution, and I can't help but think that the citizens of Libya shouldn't apologize, nor should be expect one from them (though we do, and should, welcome them).
No, the ones who should be apologizing are the ones who inflamed the tensions there, the ones who planned and carried out the attack that not only killed our men there, but also embarrassed the people of Libya who are thankful for the support the Western world gave them while their own people fought and died for the revolution.
A part of me wants the perpetrators of this heinous act that killed Christopher Stevens and three other men to be captured by Libyans, held (humanely) by Libyans, tried by their fellow Libyans (fairly), and if convicted, serve out their sentences in Libya. But I would also be happy if the perps were captured/killed by DEVGRU (formerly SEAL Team 6)/Delta Force/Predator drone/other American means.

Felt an equal anger seeing Trump's moronic post on Twitter decrying Obama's policies that resulted in Qaddafi being overthrown because you know he never supported terrorist attacks against civilians ever.// The Libyan people with their response to this tragedy have shown a genuine warmth, one that I hope is not forgotten.

Looks like the Republicans might have to stop asking "Are you better off than you were four years ago?"
Voters in Fox poll split 42/42 on whether they're better off than 4 years ago. In July, those numbers were 37/48 against.
— Nate Silver (@fivethirtyeight) September 12, 2012
Also, from the Fox Poll:
Finally, how would voters feel about another term for President Obama? Half of likely voters (50 percent) say they feel the country’s “improving” every day and they would “look forward” to another four years. That’s more than the 43 percent who say the country’s going “down the drain” and they “dread” what would happen in a second term.
Nate Silver's got his odds up over 80% for Obama, and even RCP has finally shifted Michigan from "toss-up" to "leans Obama" which puts Obama 33 electoral votes from the win. Florida has 29 votes.
Not a good day at all for Mr. Romney. Couldn't have happened to a nicer man.

Romney and the wingnuts have this weird memory when it comes to what Reagan would do in this situation. Considering that the response after Beirut was to withdraw the Marines, not reinforce them and dare the bombers to try again.

DEFENSE SPENDING: The U.S. military-industrial complex is bloated beyond belief, and yet all Mitt Romney can do is promise bigger budgets and longer wars. Today the United States spends more on its military than all other countries combined. This does not make America safer. This puts us deeper in debt and poses a far greater threat to America’s long-term health than Russia and China combined.
Romney’s penchant for one-upmanship on seemingly every foreign policy issue that arises would stretch our military thin and limit our ability to neutralize real threats coming from countries like Iran.
