I’m Dreaming of a War on Christmas
Now that Thanksgiving is over, we can look forward to Fox News’s annual Christian Persecution-fest — the “War on Christmas!” This year, expect them to be even more crazed and ridiculous than ever.

Yet they're always kind of triumphant. Because they're not meant to be won, just fought, and the harder and more brutally they're fought the more they're liked. Er, with the exception of the war on poverty. That one is all socialist though.

Ah, is it already time for the annual victimhood over a pagan ritual that Mother Church created a holiday around in its continuing effort to force non-believers to accept the faith?
If there's a "War on Christmas," it's the overcommerialization of the holiday to the point that Americans associate the holiday with increasingly expensive gifts and ever-increasing credit card debt. And bad news for the Christians: the retailers are winning.
8 | ReamWorks SKG Fri, Nov 23, 2012 12:47:20pm |
It's funny how the goyim don't really get the issue. I remember getting very angry when I was in line at the Supermarket. The woman in front of me was buying stamps, and the cashier had some U.S. "Holiday" Stamps, I think it was this series:
The clerk said "I don't have Christmas stamps, I have 'holiday' stamps. I guess we can't say Christmas anymore!" And the customer agreed, saying how horrible it was.
I had to say _something_ to them, but the only thing I could think of was "You really don't understand the whole issue, and you sound very stupid."
As a Jew, I am vehemently opposed to the "Christmasification" of Hanukkah! I would MUCH RATHER people called Christmas "Christmas" instead of "The Holidays" when they mean Christmas. It bothers me greatly that my (minor) festival is lumped together with Christmas.
Of course, Christians shouldn't presume that everyone celebrates it. But call a Christmas party a Christmas party if that's what it's celebrating, etc. Call a "Christmas Sale" a Christmas sale if that's what it is. To me that's much better than trying, badly, to dilute my holiday and merge it into yours.
(I see stores with signs that say "Get it Delivered by The Holidays" and they mean 12/25, not when Hanukkah starts this year on 12/8 evening)
9 | Turkey Jihad Fri, Nov 23, 2012 12:49:59pm |
I live in a pretty high-rent area, and the people here have everything they could possibly want/need. They also drive their douchecanoes with those stupid reindeer antlers on the windows and the red nose in the grille. Oh, and there is always, always a "Keep the Christ in Christmas" bumper sticker on the rear-view window, it is so disgusting.

He'd also ask, "Why do they celebrate my birthday in the winter? I was born in June." Then we'd have to explain how his religion ended up based in the capital of imperial Rome ("Really? Those douches?"), and how the Pontiff is a German barbarian, and why Christmas isn't a Jewish holiday...

I don't think there's a war on Christmas, but I think they have a tiny fraction of a point. We shouldn't shy away from calling something done for the 12/25 holiday "Christmas" if that's what it is.
What originally bothered people was the presumption that the entirety of the USA celebrates Christmas. Nobody wanted holidays of other religious traditions lumped into one generic "December 25 Holiday" category which is what has happened.

It's what you want it to be and no one is forcing it into one lump of "Happy Holiday." The reality is that this is done for consumer reasons and to increase "holiday sales." It saves on printing and marketing costs when you don't have to target any particular religion. Besides that, people of true faith shouldn't be challenged by a print ad.

Happy holidays.
It's also for those of us who have traditionally sent the yearly card/letter to friends and family - all of different beliefs and faiths. It's the keeping-in-touch that's important regardless of the holiday observed (or not observed) so generic cards are most appropriate. When I wish Happy Holidays to someone I mean happy holidays. If someone takes offense, not my problem... or my rudeness.

Do you have any reason to require Blu-Ray over DVD? If not, stay lower level. Cheaper, fewer issues, etc. The other consideration is your OS, because of drivers. Windows will, of course, be far less fussy than other options but will make you pay in other ways.

If it's a scratch through the lacquer side (the top), you're most likely hosed; if it's a scratch on the bottom side, you might be able to get one of those resurfacing/buffing kits (or be able to do it by hand) to get it good enough so you can rip it to your computer.

A Declaration Of War On Christmas
by Rich Abdill
The time has arrived, as it does every year, for America to be besieged by that familiar and insidious enemy: Christmas. We have endured its tyranny for 2,000 years, with its manger scenes, its mint-flavored everything, its bearded occupation of J.C. Penny locations nationwide. Christmas flaunts its influence from the gilded trees in suburban bay windows across our land, mocking us while hijacking the radio waves for reindeer idolatry and the glorification of little boys with drums.
And we shall suffer it no longer.
Though its supporters have long bemoaned “attacks” on this, the worst of all seasons, Christmas has never felt the wrath of the people, the power of the oppressed masses. We shall rise up. We shall fight back. Before the media warns us for another year of the stealth “War on Christmas,” we shall make it clear.
We shall, officially, declare war on Christmas.

As a member of the ATHEIST ILLUMINATI, I would like to try, once again, to clear up a huge misconception.
There is NOT a "War on Christmas." We atheist Illuminati enjoy and celebrate a lot of the aspects of Christmas, and would never seek to see it put asunder. The pagan symbolism, the mistletoe-inspired fornication, the drunken revelry we can pretend to blame on the eggnog (and really, most of us don't bother with the eggnog; we just go straight for the whiskey), the crass consumerism... we're okay with all that as long as all the participants are informed and consenting.
What there IS, however, is a "War on Christmas Music". I have to level with you, in my official capacity as Self-Appointed Atheist Spokesperson: that shit is VILE. Literary types are familiar with the Bulwer–Lytton Fiction Contest, whose contestants attempt to do savage violence to the literary art by deliberately constructing a cringe-inducing opening sentence to an imaginary novel which would presumably be at least as bad. Christmas music composed in the 20th Century, nearly all of which is of American origin, is some of the most nauseating dreck ever composed.
Christmas music of the sort I'm describing enjoys a strange social immunity to criticism not enjoyed by other horrifying popular music. An average person who declares that they sincerely believe the song "My Hump" by The Black Eyed Peas to be THE dumbest noise ever committed to a 16-track master might be disagreed with, but is unlikely to suffer the social consequences that could be expected by a similar person who expresses identically vehement disgust with "Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer" or "Frosty The Snowman".
I still enjoy a traditional rendition of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and "We Three Kings", so long as they haven't been massacred by the RAY CONNIFF SINGERS.

The annual persecution complex is a 24/7, 365 project.
I've decided that if they don't feel continuously persecuted they don't feel like good christianists. It's like a rule.
Well it works on the same principle as suspense in drama, at some level the brain can't distinguish a real threat from a pretend one (or a lie) and your attention can be riveted to their channel for hours or all day.
Unfortunately this method of enslaving people has psychological side effects, not just the political ones in FOX's case. People who are reacting to imaginary threats aren't attuned to finer emotions, in a sense people are being denied the better part of their humanity this way.

The WaPo editorial board put it bluntly yesterday:
The GOP’s bizarre attack on Susan Rice
SINCE THE Senate is solely responsible for the confirmation of Cabinet officers, it’s not often that members of the House of Representatives jump into a debate about the nomination of a secretary of state — particularly before there has been a nomination. That’s one of the reasons a letter sent to President Obama this week by 97 House Republicans, challenging his potential choice of U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice for the State Department job, is remarkable.
Another is blatant disregard of established facts. Drawn up by Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-S.C.), the letter alleges that “Ambassador Rice is widely viewed as having either willfully or incompetently misled the American public” about the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. [...]

Someone needs to do a thorough analysis and expose on how Republicans are getting primaried from the right, who pays for it, what "issues" drive the primary voters who participate, are they deliberately being manipulated etc etc.
Because I think that may be the weakness in our system that's being exploited to drive the Republican party over the cliff to 3rd world levels of total dysfunction.
Now this might just be a side effect of having a country indoctrinated by Fox news. That may be what creates a population of primary nuts ready to vote in Todd Akins, I don't know.

The GOP has been heading down this path for 40 years.
It's not a secret.
After Nixon played his Southern Strategy, Reagan came along and was helped tremendously by an association of religious right activists/broadcasters, the organization of which still remains. Riding piggy back on this increase of the religious right's influence was the resurgence of the paleo-right (some religious, some not), with the likes of Pat Buchanan (who was Nixon's speechwriter) and all his friends (including the Birchers like Ron Paul) coming out more publicly with their beliefs.
The primary nomination process takes lots of bodies, and the activists (of any party) are those legs. So it is hardly surprising that the GOP depends on worker bees from fundamentalist churches to do the groundwork.

Well there's one other dynamic.
Paranoid statements about the President aren't just Bircher nonsense, they're also a marker for racism.
The rhetorical policy of the Republicans has been:
Tell OBVIOUS lies about the President (communist, Islamist, Kenyan, radical) because we can't say "n*****". People will know what we mean.
That's also why Romney ran on a platform of lies, the base is used to lies now, and they love lying as a signal of racist rebellion.
It also has a side effect that really dim people and paranoids get sucked into the environment of fear without realizing that it's all lies.

To claim that the Birchers and the Religious Right are two completely distinct entities is extremely short-sighted at best. There were a LOT of John Birch Society members in the anti-Civil Rights groups from the 1950s/1960s, and many of those individuals are in leadership positions in the current Christian Reconstructionist movement (see Ralph Reed, Tony Perkins and Pat Buchanan for examples)

If you weren't reading LGF during the height of the OWS thing, you wouldn't understand the reference. "Rapey-stabby" became a meme as a result of one of the commenters obsessed with the occasional misbehavior at OWS protest sites.

Reload your page, I already figured it out and changed my answer.
Now enough flaming. Bye.

Edited once I got the dig...
I see you're a right winger claiming the OWS was where degenerates go to kill and rape...
... if this site allowed flaming you'd so get what you deserve ...
You can read whatever flame you are capable of imagining into this:
*********************************!
I had nothing to do with OWS and know perfectly well that all sorts showed up there, but find your excuse to get your hate on somewhere else. Don't talk to me again.
If you think darth is a right winger, you lack reading comprehension, or comprehensive reading.

Downding for leaping to totally wrong conclusions and being an asshole when someone tried to explain the reference to you. No one flamed here but you.

Blows a BIG WET Raspberry at you both.
Hope everything is great with you. May your days be filled with on line shopping with free shipping and our lawyers be indicted like Bruiser in the Rainmaker. :)

You might be surprised to realize that right wingers of all stripes picked up that meme.
On Harry's Place over in England the right wingers decided that OWS was all rapey-stabby-antisemites. They also love FOX and think that Obama is pure evil. Propaganda travels!

Not much surprises me about RWNJs. You might be surprised at just how knowledgeable folks are about pretty much any topic you can think of here at LGF. Perhaps you might want to hang around a bit longer and pay attention before making such leaps and being so ugly to people who don't deserve it.

1. Open mouth
2. Jam foot in mouth
3. Jump to conclusion
4. Jam other foot in mouth.
