Well all the talk about instituting certain bans has had the predicable effect. Hi capacity magazines are selling like crazy. In many cases people are buying them for guns they don't even own yet, often just as a speculative investment. The online gun stores have pretty much all sold out inventories that would normally last several months, especially for popular plinker platforms like the Ruger 10/22. Midway has so many backorders on BX-25's that their current estimate on shipping is six months out.

What more need I look for?
She loves me! Yes, she loves me, I see it. I see it.
Just for an instant the beating of
her beautiful heart I felt!
And my sighs became as one
fleetingly with her sighs!
Her heart beating, her heart beating to feel,
our sighs confounded as one...
Heavens! Yes I could, I could die!
More I can't ask, I can't ask.
Oh, heavens! Yes I could! Yes I could die!
More I can't ask, I can't ask.
Yes I could die! If I could die of love.
I had to look this up, it's another case of love potion number wine.

Really excellent article from a 'liberal Christian' blogger about the insane right-wing religious response to Sandy Hook and how it actually clearly shows that abortion and the murder of children are not viewed the same even by those who claim they believe abortion to be murder.
[Link: www.patheos.com...]
But for Dobson, “the murder of children” refers not to Sandy Hook, but to abortion. Hence the weird assertion on his radio program Monday that the murder of 20 schoolchildren is somehow God’s judgment falling on America because of the murder of “54 million babies.”
The incoherence there comes from Dobson’s heartfelt and undeniable recognition that the Newtown massacre was far, far worse than any number of abortions. He knows that. He feels that.
But Dobson has painted himself into an ethical and rhetorical corner and so he cannot allow himself to admit that.
For decades, James Dobson has insisted that abortion is “murder,” that it is “killing babies” and that no distinction — ethical, moral, theological, legal — can be allowed between those “unborn babies” and actual babies. Like most evangelicals and many Catholics, Dobson has always fiercely maintained that the killing of unborn “children” is no different from the killing of actual children.
But whenever horrible crimes like this one occur, then Dobson, just like the rest of us, beholds what has happened and recognizes that it is vastly different and wholly incomparable.
Dobson knows this. Decades of rhetorical obfuscation have deprived him of any way of expressing it or of admitting it, but James Dobson still knows this.
All that talk has left him unable to describe what he is feeling or why. He doesn’t know how to name the sorrow he feels on the news of the actual murder of actual children.
But he knows that this is a different thing. He knows that his revulsion at this crime is nothing at all like the opposition he has always expressed to abortion, even though for all these years he has used identical language demanding that we all regard the two things as identical and equivalent.
But they are not identical and they are not equivalent. Dobson knows this. Every moral intuition he has screams that these things are not equivalent.
We all know this. All of us. Even those of us who have staked our rhetoric, our politics, and our moral reasoning on the glib pretense that it is not so.
Every “pro-life” evangelical, every Operation Rescue picketer, every March for Life participant, every Christianity Today editorialist, every Catholic bishop, priest and pope knows that the murder of 20 children is essentially different and far worse than any 20 abortions. All their beloved rhetoric of “abortion is murder” and “abortion kills unborn children” turns to ashes in the wake of incidents like the slaughter in Newtown.

re: #109 Obdicut
That article seems to be saying that people like Dobson who are uselessly blaming the Newtown massacre on "God's judgement" over abortion, gays etc. are sputtering because they are too proud to admit that the massacre made it clear to them that the murder of children is not the same thing as, is much worse than abortion.
But he's missing a few things. While it's true that they are reacting more strongly to this than they would to the weeks abortion statistics, and that implicitly proves that point, what they're really doing is maintaining an assertion that bad things happen only when God is angry at the victim - ie. that providence prevents all real evil.
That this involves blaming innocent people like gay newlyweds for the slaughter of children - indeed involves even blaming the children for being part of the same nation as those gays - is not a coincidence.
For one thing there's Exodus "... I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me"
The inhumanity, the horror, the monsterousness of believing in providence was always there. If you believe in providence, then you have to believe that 6 million Jews, families and all, were so hated by God that he inflicted the Holocaust on them. If you believe in providence, then you have to believe that AIDS victims are being justly punished for their sins. If you believe in providence, then you have to believe that the plagues that swept the New World when the Europeans arrived were a judgement on the heathens who already lived here. You have to believe that God hated Africans so much that he allowed slavery in the US. etc. etc. etc.
Belief in providence is not just childish wishful thinking, but it's childishness necessarily married to inhumanity. And what we see in these inhuman statements by religious nutcase after religious nutcase is how many of them are deeply embedded in wishful thinking AND inhumanity.
This shouldn't be a surprise. If you've been paying attention to the right, then you know, for instance, that opposition to environmental legislation has long been rooted in a belief in providence. Rush Limbaugh said "God would not make a world that man could harm"
Opposition to health care insurance was predicated on something similar.
Opposition to AIDS funding was predicated on providence.
Etc.
The problem is that these people are deeply immature, unable to face neither the nature of evil nor the fact that mankind, that society has responsibilities to prevent tragedy. The can face the fact that people have to, sometimes, oppose evil, but they can't face the fact that God doesn't protect from massive tragedy. That's too big for them.
Perhaps their belief in God and in an afterlife are also based in the unwillingness to face the possibility of horror. Perhaps, if they were emotionally capable of facing the reality of being unprotected they wouldn't be believers in the first place.

Police and ATF raid East Windsor gun shop after theft of AR-15 from store.
Oh, and it's the same store that had sold the gun used in the Sandy Hook massacre.
Adam Lanza had two pistols and the AR-15 when he entered Sandy Hook Elementary School Friday morning, and in just a matter of minutes, he fired multiple rounds, killing 20 children and six adults. Before the school shooting, he shot his mother four times.
Riverview Gun Sales is the same store where police believe a different man stole an assault weapon and was trying to carry out a similar attack.
In a video obtained by Eyewitness News, Jordan Marsh, 26, of South Windsor, can be seen stealing an AR-15 with a scope just four days earlier.
Marsh was caught stealing a 50-caliber long gun from the Riverview Gun Sales on Saturday. Police found the AR-15 in a duffel bag in a room at the Hartford Hilton that day.
"It's scary, I mean I got three kids," said Sharon Hodge of South Windsor, who spoke with Eyewitness News.
For the past two years, she has opened her home to Marsh, who is her boyfriend's son.
Marsh, who Hodge said suffers from schizophrenia as well as other mental issues, was off his medication when he was arrested Saturday.
"It's unbelievable," Hodge said after seeing the story on WFSB.
Police said Riverview Gun Sales had no idea the AR-15 Marsh stole was missing. Management at the store didn't know about 11 guns that Marsh had allegedly stolen last year until they were notified by detectives.
Inventory control issues at Riverview Gun Sales have occurred before. In 2007, state police raided a Somers home and found a bunch of stolen guns from the store.
"It was found that the same Riverview gun store was missing upwards of 30-plus guns," said East Windsor police Detective Matthew Carl.
If gun shops have such lackluster security, do we expect anyone else to do better?
Apparently this gun shop has no clue about its inventory - they only learned of the stolen guns after police told them of the thefts.
Here's what I don't get - video purportedly shows the thefts, but the store didn't know they had occurred? Was this BATF or local LEOs who had their own cameras installed, or was this further incompetency by the store to not actually view/review security video.

The vast majority of gun stores have proper and tight security. This one didn't and it likely should have its FFL pulled for that (or put on probation if it isn't already, since a single screw-up that wasn't a result of the dealer breaking the law isn't usually grounds for revocation).

They would have needed a judges order (not out of the question considering the stores history) but then they would have also had to have been able to identify Marsh from that video (hard unless he already was 'known' to the cops) or else how would the cops have known it was him and then tracked him to the Hilton

Mila Kunis is well-liked in the West, but her fame has attracted some haters in her native Ukraine. And those haters are of the worst sort:
Mila Kunis has been targeted in an anti-Semitic rant.
A slur was reportedly made against the 29-year-old actress - who has been dating Two And A Half Men star Ashton Kutcher for nine months - by a politician in her native Ukraine.
According to gossip website TMZ.com, Jewish organisations around the globe are furious that Igor Miroshnichenko said the Ted star was not a true Ukrainian and called her a 'zhydovka.'
The statement translates as 'dirty Jewess' and is reportedly a derogatory word against Jewish people that was used during the Holocaust, TMZ said.
Protests have broken out in recent days after the Ukrainian Justice Ministry ruled that using the term to describe a Jewish person was legal, turning back a petition demanding that the offensive word be banned from the public sphere.
And to Mr. Miroshnichenko, let me just say:
Fuck You, you hate-spewing son of a bitch!

That bad? Yeah, for that sort of failure the ATF will close down a gun store and yank its owner's FFL, and they should. Not know a gun had been stolen for a day or two might be understandable, though not tolerable, but not knowing for over a year that your inventory had been shrunk like that? The guy's not only a disgrace to gun dealers, he's also a disgrace to store management. No retail location whose inventory I was responsible for ever had that kind of fuck-up on my watch, I can tell you that.

Human beings are very vulnerable to negative emotions.
For instance all you need to do is give some semblance of danger and you can entrance someone in a tv show because the brain doesn't really distinguish real danger from fake.. And during that time the person will have their positive emotions blunted.
Do that every day and you can destroy their personality.
People are even more vulnerable to enmity than to danger.

More details about the ongoing investigations at Riverview Gun, including background:
Seifert said Thursday that neither Nancy nor Adam Lanza are believed to have engaged in target shooting over the last six months.
Two law enforcement sources said that, on Thursday, ATF agents returned to the store to re-examine records that they had examined on a prior visit.
On Saturday, a South Windsor man — who had received a suspended prison sentence and two years probation in May on charges of stealing a dozen rifles and shotguns from Riverview Sales — tried to steal a sniper rifle from the same store, police said.
Jordan Marsh, 26, pleaded guilty May 10 to a single count of stealing a firearm and received a suspended prison sentence and two years of probation.
According to East Windsor police, on Saturday, Marsh grabbed a Bushmaster .50-caliber rifle from Riverview Sales valued at $5,000 and ran from the store. When store employees confronted Marsh, he pulled a knife, then fled on foot. Police officers eventually caught and arrested him.
In June 2007 a Somers man who occasionally worked at Riverview Sales was charged with stealing 33 guns from the business. In that case the store's owner, David E. Laguercia, contacted ATF after determining his store could not account for 33 firearms. Video surveillance showed the man taking two guns.
In March 2008 that man pleaded no contest to two counts of stealing a firearm from the store and received an 18-month suspended prison sentence.
So, it appears the store had thefts from both employees and outsiders. In the instance of the cited inside job, the store promptly reported.

Our culture is more feminized, so it makes it easier for the crazy nutters (the strong?) victimize us. So we need to be stronger (more bravado, guns) to counter the victimization by the strong (nutters).
We can call this Caveman Doctrine. It's the hardwired instinct of only the strong survive.
Not for once second do these Cavemen (and Cavewomen) think that maybe we are progressing as a society and these events are not results of this progress: in another time and place, Adam Lanza would be called 'crazy' and nothing else would be done about this event.

What do you want to bet that Obama has already sat down with Bill Clinton and discussed how he handled Newt the last time the GOP threw a tantrum and threatened to shut down the government. I suspect that the Democrats are now well prepared to dig in and let the GOP go over the cliff. And Obama has already emailed Boehner the message "Please proceed Mr Speaker."

In a way it was good to get it out in the open to be pointed at, laughed, and hopefully marginalized before it causes to much damage. The nutty undercurrent has been there in the GOP at least as far back as the Clinton Administration.

Difference is that when Newt was in power, he might have expected that his own party had his back when he was playing chicken with Clinton over the budget. From all appearances, Boehner never had his party's support in these negotiations and was wasting everybody's time with them.

The Union troops on the line who started chanting "Fredericksburg" knew what was about to happen. Payback.
And the Union tactical command on the 3rd day did a lot of things quite well given how thin their line was. Stannard and the Vermont troops in particular. Compare that to the ad hoc actions to save things on the 2nd day post Sickle's Folly. (1st Minnesota's sacrificial charge in particular.)

Bipartisan to the current GOP is political theater, something they bring out when they want to whine that Democrats aren't playing along anymore with their BS. Boehner pretty much made that clear at the presser, when questioned as to whether he'd allow Obama's proposal to be brought to a vote or if "Plan B's" failure meant he'd work closer with Democrats, by saying that they have two House Republican bills sitting in the Senate and "bipartisan" is the Democrats passing those bills and Obama signing them.

'Hazardous Device' Found In College Park
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WUSA) -- Prince George's County Fire Spokesperson Mark Brady says a hazardous device was found in a College Park neighborhood on Friday morning and several people of interest were questioned. Brady did not know whether there had been any arrests.
The device was reported around 6 a.m. at the intersection of Edgewood Road and Rhode Island Avenue. Homes on either side of the device, in the 5000 block of Edgewood Road, were evacuated. A man says he was alerted about the situation by a neighbor who told him the whole block was cordoned off. The man reported that he heard a boom and saw smoke near a white van at a home.
...According to Brady, a device described as a pipe bomb exploded on a front porch of a house earlier this week in the 8800 block of 48th Avenue in College Park. He says authorities have not ruled out the possibility that the two incidents may be related, but also says the investigation into that incident is also ongoing.

When you spin up the outrage machine you eventually have to set it to '11' since you always have to top the previous outrage in competition with the other outragers. And since fear and hate have been selling so well with their followers for the last decade or two they stay with that product. The fact that it is in complete opposition to the religious philosophy they supposedly follow is ignored since there is additional dogma indicating that they are the elect and thus above the rules.

Cops: 2 guns seized from home of teen who threatened shooting at Pa. school, classes canceled
PHILADELPHIA — Police have seized two handguns from the bedroom of a teen they say threatened a shooting at his suburban Philadelphia high school a week after the mass killing at a Connecticut elementary school.
Northampton Township police say the Council Rock South High School ninth-grader was taken into custody Thursday after fellow students reported he made threatening statements.
Detective Sgt. Bill Klein says two 9 mm handguns were in plain sight in the boy's bedroom when police went to his home.
How do parents let their 14 year old keep handguns in their bedroom? It's not like he was hiding them. They must have known.

The Slide Fire helps shooters increase their accuracy and number of rounds—without actually firing automatically. "You actively fire every round, and if you stop pushing forward or you take your finger off the trigger the gun stops firing. It just helps you fire the gun in semiautomatic very fast," Cottle told the magazine.
A letter from the ATF on Slide Fire's website certifies the part's legality for exactly that reason. According to the letter, Slide Fire told ATF that the stock "is intended to assist persons whose hands have limited mobility." So, basically, if you are missing a hand and need to fire a gun like Capone, the Slide Fire is for you.
Off the rails.

As I recall, every mass shooting of late has been committed with legal guns. Every time we hear "but they were legal so what are we gonna do?" as an excuse to do nothing at all.
And I am so sick of this self-defense crap. If we were really interested in self defense we would have basic martial arts self defense training in every school.

School safety is indeed a complex issue, but armed guards wont make much difference when faced with AR-15s that can punch through body armor.

Ahhh, here's an explanation for the Mayan calender prediction...
Leading Off: Were the Mayans Just Predicting the End of the N.H.L.?
We have finally made sense of the N.H.L. lockout. After a season of staring at this sorry spectacle and concluding that N.H.L. owners are the adult equivalent of children who light things on fire just because they like to watch them burn, there is a glimmer of reason in all of this.
According to the Mayan/Gary Bettman calendar, the world was supposed to end Friday. So, why play part of a season? Why pay players and arena workers? It’s the dullest part of the season. The apocalypse would come and the Columbus Blue Jackets could still be in view of a playoff spot. This would be an eternal stain on the N.H.L.’s reputation. And if all that money they saved was still regarded as currency in the Mayan/Bettman afterlife, they’d all be stinking rich and hailed as postapocalyptic geniuses. Right?
And maybe Plan B was, even if the world didn’t end, global warming would melt all the ice anyway, so why bother?
Heh.

Putting a Police Officer In Every School Would Cost At Least $5.5 Billion a Year
According to the National Center for Education Statistics there are 98,817 K-12 schools in the United States. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says cops make $55,000 a year. So we could put $5.4 billion as the low level estimate of the cost. Cops obviously have health care benefits and pension and disability benefits for police offers tend to be fairly costly so the real price would be higher than that.

One "armed guard in school" story:
Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputy Neil Gardner soon would complete his second year as the uniformed community resource officer assigned to Columbine High School. Gardner, a 15-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office, normally ate his lunch with the students in the cafeteria during first lunch period.
On April 20, however, Deputy Gardner and campus supervisor Andy Marton, an unarmed school security officer employed by the school district, were eating lunch in Gardner’s patrol car. They were monitoring students in the “Smokers’ Pit,” a spot just to the northwest of campus in Clement Park where the students congregated to smoke cigarettes.
Gardner had just finished his lunch when he received a call over the school’s radio from a custodian. “Neil,” called the custodian in a panicked voice, “I need you in the back lot!”

The GOP? When did the HRC become a part of the GOP?
WASHINGTON — Former Sen. Chuck Hagel, widely viewed as President Obama’s likely choice to lead the Pentagon and already under fire from some pro-Israel supporters, faced a new level of resistance Thursday from activists upset over his record on gay rights.
The sharpest criticism came from the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), a key White House ally and the country’s leading gay-rights group, whose president pointed to a 1998 comment in which Hagel questioned whether an “openly aggressively gay” nominee could be an effective U.S. ambassador.
“Sen. Hagel’s unacceptable comments about gay people, coupled with his consistent anti-LGBT record in Congress, raise serious questions about where he stands on [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender] equality today,” said HRC President Chad Griffin, a major fundraiser for Obama’s re-election campaign. “For him to be an appropriate candidate for any administration post, he must repudiate his comments.”
The rising concerns bubbled to the surface even after phone calls to gay-rights activists in recent days from senior White House aides, including top Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett.

NYC public schools have NYPD school safety officers at the schools. More than 5k officers to patrol nearly 1,500 schools.
That by itself doesn't stop gun violence in the schools. The guns keep getting into the schools and there are periodic incidences of shootings.
The larger issue isn't mass/spree killings - its the abundance and overwhelming number of homicides by firearms that have to be addressed, and this presser did nothing to address that issue at all.
They were talking right past anyone who might be willing to have a discussion on the matter.
The NRA telegraphed its intentions quite clearly. Their idea of a discussion was to avoid taking questions that might show that there's nothing behind the proposals except hot air, and hot lead.
More guns and more police at schools wont prevent shootings.
It didn't stop VA Tech. It didn't stop Columbine.
There were armed police/security at both schools, and yet the massacres took place.
Heck, even having 1 guard at a school would be ineffective considering the size of some schools or campuses for K-12.
Out in Scottsdale AZ where there was just a suspected gunman incident that turned out to be false, the campus for the school was quite large and too big for 1 person to secure. You'd need several. Even then, it wouldn't be enough - particularly with a determined killer. The killer would still be able to inflict carnage in those situations before being confronted by an armed good guy (and most of these mass killings end up with the killer committing suicide before cops have a chance to close in and kill/capture the gunman).

VT shooter - committed suicide
Columbine - committed suicide
Sandy Hook - committed suicide
I could go on, but it isn't cops that stopped the violence. The gunmen all commited suicide before law enforcement could stop the act in progress and that's with VT and Columbine having police/armed security on campus at the time the shootings began. VT has an entire police force. Didn't stop the violence from happening.
SUNY Albany has its own police force. It didn't' stop a gunman from holding a class hostage (that situation ended when students being held hostage rushed the gunman and one was seriously injured in the process).
Adding more guns to the mix wont help, and potentially will cause even more harm especially if it's in the form of volunteers or ununiformed personnel. That will slow emergency response as law enforcement attempts to secure the situation.

Abe Foxman: Chuck Hagel 'troubling'
Former Sen. Chuck Hagel’s possible nomination for the top Pentagon position is “troubling” to the American Jewish community, the head of the Anti-Defamation League told POLITICO.
Hagel has “expressed himself in an interview about the power of the ‘Jewish lobby,’ declaring himself to be an American senator, not an Israeli senator,” Abraham Foxman, the national director of the ADL, told POLITICO in a phone call from Jerusalem on Tuesday. “That’s pretty disturbing language which … borders onto conspiratorial.
“At the very least it’s of concern to the American Jewish community, at the very most, it’s very troubling,” Foxman added. “But it’s the president’s choice, and the president will set the policy if in fact Sen. Hagel does get the nomination.”
Foxman’s comments come as scrutiny mounts for the Nebraska Republican’s record on foreign affairs. Hagel has long taken fire from some corners of the Jewish community and supporters of Israel, and concern over his previous positions has intensified among some on Capitol Hill and in conservative and Jewish circles since news surfaced last week that he looked primed for the Pentagon pick.
“What I find more troubling is, he had sufficient time to distance himself from the ‘Jewish lobby’ quote, to explain, and he hasn’t,” Foxman said, referring to quotes from interviews Hagel gave several years ago. “He let it stand. I find that more troubling than the original statement. He sees it out there, he sees it being seen as this truly conspiratorial view, that the Jewish lobby controls foreign policy, and there’s no comment.”

Chuck Hagel Once Opposed Nominee Because He Was “Openly Aggressively Gay”
WASHINGTON — Former Sen. Chuck Hagel — a finalist for the post of secretary of defense in Obama's second term — once opposed a nominee to be U.S. ambassador to Luxembourg because he was "openly aggressively gay."
“Ambassadorial posts are sensitive," Hagel told to the Omaha World-Herald in 1998, opposing the nomination of philanthropist James Hormel. "They are representing America," he said. "They are representing our lifestyle, our values, our standards. And I think it is an inhibiting factor to be gay — openly aggressively gay like Mr. Hormel — to do an effective job."

Many schools around the country already have security of one form or another. It wont stop mass murders.
Reducing the ability for those people to get their hands on firearms in the first place could reduce all the carnage - all homicides and suicides (plus all the injuries and accidents) and their related costs to society.
But to the NRA, it's more important to limit the 1st Amendment than to consider reasonable restrictions under the 2d.

The USSS wasn't a deterrent for Hinckley attempting to assassinate President Reagan. And the USSS had all manner of firearms at their disposal.
And since the Reagan assassination attempt, metal detectors are part and parcel of the security plan to keep guns out of the perimeter. It's meant to be a gun-free zone to everyone but the presidential detail. Same goes for Capitol Hill.

An in-school version of the Minutemen lunatics. What fun.
Speaking of which - I decided to do a bit of further digging on the story of the Arizona GOP nutcase who went on Iranian Press TV earlier this week claiming that the Newtown, CT as well as this summer's Aurora, CO shooting were all perpetrated and executed by Israel.
Turns out that Micheal Harris has a rather...interesting group of people who he chooses to associate with.
From August 25, 2009 Phoenix NewTimes weekly newspaper:
Neo-Nazi J.T. Ready, Republican Mike Harris, Nativist Craig Tillman, and Scores More Nuts Star in Video from Obama's VFW Visit
Behind [now-dead neo-nazi murderer J.T.] Ready in a suit and tie is none other than Republican Mike Harris, an also-ran in the 2006 GOP gubernatorial primary against Len Munsil. Harris, who is best known for sinking $100K of his own money into his campaign after convincing a judge to cut his child support payments in half (this, according to an Arizona Daily Star report at the time), is carrying a placard that reads, "No Marxist Coup."
After Ready's finished, he repeats Ready's racist slur "Obongo," and goes on a tirade that outpaces most local nativists I've heard on the same subject.
"Let's first of all clear up some misconceptions," says Harris. "We are not a nation of immigrants. I am the seventh generation born in this country. I did not emigrate from anywhere. This young man is the eighth generation born in this country. We did not emigrate from anywhere. We built this country."
In the referenced article, there is a photo of Ready and Harris standing together during the protest.

The Chuck Hagel Controversy - Jeffrey Goldberg - The Atlantic
Goldblog wasn't planning on covering the controversy surrounding the so-far theoretical nomination of Chuck Hagel to be secretary of defense, because it is, after all, theoretical, and because I think the situation is much more complex than both right and left think believe it to be, and who wants to get into it right now? I'm into enough at the moment.
But then I received an email being circulated among Jewish liberals who support Hagel, and it provoked me to think through some of the deeper issues here. The point of the aforementioned e-mail was to argue that Hagel is, in fact, "pro-Israel," and it provides a list of the various times he's voted for this or that on behalf of Israel in the Senate. "Senator Hagel cosponsored the Palestinian Anti-Terrorism Act of 2006," for instance. "The bill, which became US law, declared it U.S. policy to oppose organizations such as Hamas and Hezbollah..." And so on.
What struck me as unusual about the list is that it was framed as a response to right-wing criticism. It did not advance arguments you would expect to hear from the Left, but tried to mollify the Right. It contained nothing like, "Hagel is adamant in his support for a settlement freeze," or somesuch; the letter was designed to say, in effect, "Don't worry, Hagel is actually closer ideologically to Lindsey Graham than you think."
About Hagel himself, I have mixed feelings: He is a patriot, and a smart and pleasant man (I've met him on a couple of occasions) and if he's anti-Semitic, he went about hiding this from me pretty well.
Continues.

I think Hagel's comment about the Jewish lobby was assholic and dumb. I don't think it's the most important thing in the world and I don't see any evidence in anything else he's ever said and done that he's anti-semitic. He aligned himself heavily against the neocons and a lot of what is presented as anti-Israel is anti-Neocon on his part.
He's not being made vice-potentate of Israel. He's possibly going to be defense secretary, where he has to follow what Obama tells him to do. We can already see this in that he changed his position on being adamantly against any strike on Iran, to cautiously endorsing it under some circumstances.
Trying to judge the dude on saying "Jewish lobby" once and saying that he's not an Israeli senator once-- that's fucking ridiculous. Is he an ideal candidate? No. Is anyone? No. Is he going to betray Israel and arm Hamas? Of course fucking not.

The 10 Craziest Quotes From The NRA Press Conference
1) Gun-free schools zones “tell every insane killer in America that schools are their safest place to inflict maximum mayhem with minimum risk.”
2) “There exists in this country a callous, corrupt and corrupting shadow industry that sells, and sows, violence against its own people.
3) “[V]iolent crime is increasing again for the first time in 19 years! Add another hurricane, terrorist attack or some other natural or man-made disaster, and you’ve got a recipe for a national nightmare of violence and victimization.”
4) “We need to have every single school in America immediately deploy a protection program proven to work —and by that I mean armed security.”
5) “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. Would you rather have your 911 call bring a good guy with a gun from a mile away … or a minute away?”

Do not try to use Jews and Jewish issues as a proxy for your own politics. It is not going to work. That reed has been leaned on too heavily.

I disagree. We've been having these events (mass killings involving 4 or more dead) every two weeks for decades on end. Newtown was particularly shocking because it was mostly a bunch of kindergarten kids who were murdered.
That a bunch of adults are murdered on a periodic basis - and with frightening regularity - is lost on the NRA.
I'm waiting to see what law enforcement has to say about the NRA position. I'm sure they'll have some interesting observations/comments about that.
NAPO already seems to be against whatever it was that the NRA proffered.

It seems to me reading the NRA's statement that they want to push this as "Good guys with guns will solve this problem and it's the media's fault that we have violence." I'm sorry but you can't blame video games, music, and movies for these shootings. You just can't. Canadian and European children watch these same videos, play these same games, and listen to the same music. And yet they don't have so much as a fraction of the gun deaths we do. The elephant in the room here frankly is guns. It shouldn't be absurdly easy to get a gun. It just shouldn't. I think I've read about how in some states that it's easier to get a gun than it is a car.

Bulletstorm, Grand Theft Auto, Mortal Kombat and Splatterhouse. And here’s one: it’s called Kindergarten Killers.
Granted that GTA and Mortal Kombat are longstanding and old reliable names, Kindergarten killers was a flash app on newgrounds that may have been seen by a few people when it was first released a decade ago, but it's not relavent to anyone now.
I've posted this link before, but despite playing more video games than the US, the Dutch and South Koreans don't have nearly the firearms homicides we have here in the US. There's no correlation between video games and gun violence. If there was, there'd be some relationship between the amount of violence and how much is spent on video games.
No such link can be found.

It got me this morning when I was working out at the 92nd street Y. There was a kids basketball class going on in the main gym and they were just such little balls of energy happily bouncing off each other and running around and making wild throws that missed the baskets by a mile.
Security was a lot tighter than it normally is, too. Usually the guards wave me past when they see me in my gym shorts and t-shirt, but this time they looked at my ID, looked me over, and were searching everyone's bags. I assume this is in response to the shooting. That place is always full of kids.

The general consensus here is people can and should be allowed to own firearms, but military style weapons need to be banned completely, and ownership of a firearm needs to require annual refresher training, plus screenings to establish mental and emotional stability to retain ownership, preferably done by locally run, government sponsored "well regulated militias"

All things the NRA will fight tooth and nail against, because the fewer guns and gun owners, the fewer rubes they can swindle.

America doesn't need another TSA like agency guarding our schools. Enough already with big government solutions. :D
Just watch, in a couple weeks, it'll be "Democrats wanna spend billions putting armed guards in schools! We're broke, we can't afford that!!!"

Don't negotiate with terrorists or their supporters.

Sounds about right.

re: #616 Kragar
Yeah, I'd go with more than annual myself but I'm a super-safety-oriented guy.
I was just talking with my wife's dad, who is this gigantic shy retired Ironworker now working as a supervisor for mass building projects. He has an immaculate safety record, it's what he's built his career on. He recently got a gun, since he has a crazy ex-wife who assaulted their mutual daughters.
He told me he couldn't believe how easy it was to get the gun, how little training he got, how there wasn't going to be any ongoing safety routine or checks now that he had the gun. He said that he treats nail guns more seriously than the government treats real guns.
He immediately made a checklist for himself for gun safety, and runs through it every day. He keeps the gun in a safe next to his bed, with a deadman lock-- if he punches in the wrong code twice, the safe bricks itself and you'd have to drill or blow it open. He keeps it unloaded, with the clip in the safe next to the gun. So every day he opens the safe, takes out the gun, verifies that it's still unloaded, takes it down to the range near where he lives and fires a few clips.
He doesn't load it until he's on the range, he makes sure it's unloaded after, he even keeps a goddamn spreadsheet of his ammo so he can account for every bullet. Afterwards it goes back in the safe, unloaded and cleaned. He's never told the number on the safe to anyone, not even his daughters. He told them he'll tell them if they start taking gun safety classes to and demonstrate to him that they'll be responsible about it.
I pointed out to him that he doesn't really have the tactical training to use it, and now he's all gung ho about getting that and has added it to his checklist.
I am fine with him having a gun. He's a serious man who needs it for a real reason and he's acting responsibly.
He contrasts so vividly with the goddamn TACTICUL assholes buying a gun so that they can bring it to fucking political rallies while wearing a shirt that says "We came unarmed-- this time."

No. They'll just offset the spending with cuts in social security or Medicare or other parts of the education budget. Make schools and localities do more with less - push the tax bill up on localities.

Don't think that the usual parties haven't tried to figure out how to shoehorn homeschooling into this. Where are Hunter and Joshua safer than in daddy's stand-your-ground McMansion castle?
Saves money, keeps Timmy safe, keeps the wife at home where she belongs... it all comes together!

Sorta surprised Alex Jones hasn't yet wigged out and decided that Newtown was a "false flag" meant to further expand the coming "police state" by putting armed guards in schools and making them virtual prisons.

Attention internet shoppers-
Just got this link from a client of mine in precious metals. He wanted us to see what he is doing with some very specialized alloys in gold.
Gorgeous vintage look stuff.

If they were properly regulated, they could include a reporting procedure. If anyone was worried about a gun owner's mental state, they could call it in and the screeners could investigate the incident.
Its not perfect, but its better than what we have now, especially if there were laws on the books to allow seizure of the weapons.
