NBC/WSJ Poll: For the First Time, a Majority Want Legal Abortion

Republican craziness backfires
US News • Views: 23,004

The new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll on abortion shows that for the first time, a majority of Americans want abortion to be legal in all (or most) cases.

And one reason for the opinion swing: the Republican Party’s deranged obsession with controlling women’s reproductive rights, and the very revealing statements by people like Todd Akin and other highly placed right wing cavemen.

What’s more, seven in 10 respondents oppose Roe v. Wade being overturned, which is the highest percentage on this question since 1989.

“These are profound changes,” says Republican pollster Bill McInturff, who conducted this survey with Democratic pollster Peter D. Hart and his colleagues.

McInturff adds that the abortion-related events and rhetoric over the past year - which included controversial remarks on abortion and rape by two Republican Senate candidates, as well as a highly charged debate over contraception - helped shaped these changing poll numbers.

“The dialogue we have had in the last year has contributed … to inform and shift attitudes.”

I know I should be happy about this, but to be honest it seems absurd that you are still having the debate at all.

Excellent news, but surprising to me. Abortion seemed to be the one social issue that was not trending leftward over time.

Big props to the GOP for forcing the shift!

I think it’s less about people wanting “legal abortion” and more about people wanting women to have the continued right to make their own health-care decisions.

Which is why the GOP is hell bent on things like Voter ID laws, making the Electoral College proportional, and gerrymandering themselves into safety.

Once people see what the Republican party actually stands for, they lose. When people like Akin and Mourdock started pulling the curtain back, the effect was instant.

I think also people have seen just how fucking creepy a lot of the anti-abortion arguments get, and just how far they’re willing to take them. And that it’s very clearly, in most cases, about punishing women and not about ensuring the welfare of theoretical children.

And, of course, what do we hear from conservative circles? That these guys are wrong, or misogynists, or too stupid to exist? That they should be shunned? That they should stop receiving contributions and support, from even the RNC itself?

No. All we hear is “they should keep that kind of thing to themselves.” To be discussed, like Romney said “in quiet rooms.”

Exactly. Nobody likes abortion. Hell, I don’t like seeing it happen just because a man and a woman weren’t responsible with their sexual decisions. In some cases it’s an ugly thing, but in many others it’s a necessary procedure to preserve existing life.

I’d still rather see an abortion than an orphan, or an abused, malnourished, forgotten victim of somebody else’s irresponsibility.

It’s just another thing in this country where the discussion has become completely about the extremes on every issue.

I think that had a twofold effect: Showed people just where restrictions on abortion will lead (to dead women), and showed that it’s necessary to speak up about the issue and answer pollsters truthfully.

re: #7 Obdicut

Despite that, the state legislatures are pushing ahead with an anti abortion agenda that is more invasive than ever. In Texas:

Republican Gov. Rick Perry has told lawmakers that he expects more anti-abortion laws during the 2013 session to work toward his goal “to make abortion at any stage a thing of the past.” Anti-abortion activists have pledged to use every legal means possible to make obtaining abortions difficult, if not impossible, to obtain.

The latest tact is to pass fetal-pain bills, which is apparently based on flawed science (go figure).

Virginia is considering a group of anti-abortion bills, including one proffered by State Sen. Thomas A. Garrett (R-Lynchburg) that would would:

… prevent Medicaid from subsidizing abortion services for low-income women in cases “in which a physician certifies … that the fetus would be born with a gross and totally incapacitating physical deformity or mental deficiency.” Women who currently receive Medicaid in Virginia have abortion coverage in cases of rape, incest, severe fetal abnormalities, or when the life of the mother is in danger.

Nationwide, there’s been an increase in regulation as well - mostly with the intent of so limiting the practice that it would be near impossible for some to actually obtain a legal abortion or to make it impractical by requiring multiple visits/consultations, or invasive ultrasounds.

14 HappyWarrior  Tue, Jan 22, 2013 10:20:52am

I remember some of the GOP and conservative pundits on election night trying to say that while Obama was clearly re-elected, the American people are skeptical of government involvement. They were right but not for the reasons they probably thought. The American people I think are finally starting to see that GOP policies are as big government if not more so than the Democrats.

Which, of course, is serving their long-term plans one way or another. Either they make abortion virtually impossible to obtain or they hope that all the legal challenges to said laws by pro-choice groups eventually leads to the matter showing up before SCOTUS again and their 5-4 majority finally striking down RvW.

Either a much broader decision by the Supreme court protecting privacy and/or abortion rights, which is unlikely with Alioto, Scalia, Thomas, and Roberts all on the court at once, or the defeat of the GOP at the state level in those areas.

re: #15 Mattand

Here are the options I see:

1) A Republican Party not so beholden to the insane religious right
2) A Republican Party reduced to rump status even in their stronghold states

Two probably implies one, eventually, but to get to two we need to break the gerrymandering. Which means we need to win on the local level. Which means, holy shit folks, you have to realize that the local Republican candidate may seem like a fine and friendly person, but they will nearly always vote for their party’s redistricting proposal, and that fucks everyone.

So don’t do that.

I don’t think this is an extreme opinion: I like abortion. The advancements in medical science that allow women to have control over their reproduction have given them a freedom that many men take for granted. It’s only an ugly thing when the stigma attached to it causes a woman to delay the decision to abort beyond the first or mid-second trimester, or the restrictions placed upon it make it unavailable earlier.

re: #15 Mattand

I don’t know. More people do need to vote in local elections so the GOP can’t get a majority or close to a majority in state legislatures though. It needs to be pointed out that so called off years are just as important for voting as presidential years. I mean these are the ones that are about the people who directly represent you in your state’s capital yet these ones get the least amount of voters which is to the GOP’s benefit.

Birth control would also be covered by insurance with no strings attached, paid maternity leave would be extended to a year, and abortion would be provided in every hospital in this country.

Erik Rush: Obama May Cancel 2014 Election to Help Bring ‘This Nation Under the Heel of Communism’

For some time, there have been unsubstantiated reports of the Obama administration engaging in clandestine negotiations with China toward satisfying America’s debt to that nation via exchanges of land and resources. Such an arrangement would be illegal and treasonous of course, but given its deportment to date, that would not likely deter this administration.

Also, in the face of having trillions of dollars in debt called by China, and the economic catastrophe that would ensue, it is entirely possible that Obama might request and be granted some manner of dispensation from Congress to legitimize this pact.

All of this falls well within the parameters of Barack Obama’s long-standing desire to bring America down, as it were, punishing the American people for centuries of enjoying the spoils of imperialism, colonialism, and oppression, as well as finally bringing this nation under the heel of communism.

Thus – which came as an outrage, but no surprise to many – it is the Chinese government that is lobbying Obama to disarm the American public. They foresee a time when there will be widespread anger against them for their role in this obscene arrangement, and would rather not have to militarily engage armed Americans over land or resources that they will control, some of which is in America’s heartland. Some perceive Obama’s spirited pursuit of gun control after the Sandy Hook massacre as typical knee-jerk liberal opportunism, but it is far more than that.

As reported previously in this space, despite Obama’s affinity for communism and show of solidarity with the world’s leftists, the Chinese government thinks him a fool, yet they are more than happy to expand their global influence at our expense.

Obama’s definitely high on power, but I wouldn’t count on him paying any price for his policy escapades; considering the course America is on at the moment, there may not be a midterm election in 2014 at all. If there is, the leftist juggernaut of a compromised press, political organization, and outright fraud proved in November 2012 that it can prevail over all logic, common sense, and ostensible fail safes within the American electoral system. As the press continues to maintain the illusion that Obama is simply another American trying to do the right thing, he has been involved in the darkest machinations, some as yet incomprehensible to the average American.

It is a sad irony that the American people are being positioned to suffer most due to the accumulation of debt that irresponsible (and some outright treasonous) government officials racked up in the first place, but such is the lot of those who are ruled rather than governed.

But of course, to the Santorum/Fischer right, contraceptives are also a problem because the problem isn’t the “killing of unborn”, the problem is women in control of their own lives, something anathema to extreme right religious types the world over.

Abortion is more invasive and costly and dangerous than contraception, and the latter should be preferred.

Heart surgery is more invasive and costly and dangerous than staying in shape and eating healthy, and the latter should be preferred.

It’s just another medical procedure. Let’s avoid them when we can, but be mindful that modern medical science has given us the opportunity when it’s necessary.

I wonder if these secessionist lunatics understand that even if they were to succeed in their fantasy, that not only would they lose all federal aid that keeps many of these states afloat, but also there would likely be a mass exodus of roughly 50% of the populations — if not more — from those states. Total economic collapse would be almost immediate.

I agree abortion is a touchy issue that should be carefully considered, but as long as anti-choicers (I refuse to call them pro-life) seem hell bent to make any form of contraceptive or birth control illegal, full access to abortions must be allowed to any woman in need.

Its a simple enough line of reasoning. If you want women to have fewer abortions, you need to give them more control over their reproduction, not less.

To the Fischers and Santorums of the world, it’s not simply about control of women, it’s also about numbers. Namely that their flock, both through attrition and through alienation, is shrinking and those who remain are not as devoted as they once were. It’s been the same way for centuries, opposition to contraception and abortion having more to do with ensuring a growing number of the faithful than it has with choice.

The most hilarious part is when the nutcases wanted electoral voters not to vote for Obama. Yeah Obama gets nearly 5 million more of the popular vote than Romney and wins in a electoral landslide but they shouldn’t vote. That would be what’s called a coup and subverting the will of the people.

Yeah, now the they’ve backed off refusing to raise the debt limit altogether and are proposing a 3-month hike dependent on writing a budget, with whichever how that fails to pass a budget not getting paid. I guess it works from a populist viewpoint, showing the people how “serious” they are about it by “punishing” do-nothing Congress critters.

But all it does is allow the House GOP to pass the “Ryan Plan” a third time on a purely party-line vote, while the Senate GOP uses the public pressure to push Senate Dems into accepting a much more conservative budget because they’ll filibuster any purely Dem budget.

Something besides this?

Just after midnight today, a SWAT deployed stun grenades at the front door of a building where three had been barricaded for about nine hours, securing all three without shots fired.

The three men Monday morning had fled from a Department of Public safety trooper eastbound on Interstate 20 in Mitchell County after firing shots at him and evaded captured for almost 18 hours.

After the darkened building — described as a private cafe on Austin street, just south of Business 20 — had been surrounded by law enforcement and a DPS helicopter illuminated the structure, SWAT team members just after midnight launched their assault. They successfully entered and took the three men into custody without incident.

The area of the city had been secured and residents evacuated.

Apparently they were clocked doing 109mph when the LEO pulled the car with OK plates over.

Multiple people have been shot at a Harris County college, Harris County Precinct 4 deputy constables said.

Investigators said the shooting happened at Lone Star College’s North Harris campus, 2700 West W. W. Thorne Drive near Aldine Westfield shortly after noon.

Officials have not said exactly how many people have been shot or the extent of their injuries. Memorial Hermann Hospital said Life Flight was being sent to the college to pick up at least one patient.

Deputy constables said they have at least one person detained, but have not said if that person is a suspected shooter.

Lone Star College policy on active shooters:

[Link: www.lonestar.edu…] (PDF link)

The highlights, from here:

An Active Shooter is a situation where one or more suspects participate in a random or systematic shooting spree, and demonstrating intent to continuously harm others. The overriding objective appears to be that of inflicting serious bodily injury or death rather than other criminal conduct. These situations are dynamic and evolve rapidly, demanding immediate deployment of law enforcement resources to stop the shooting and mitigate harm to innocent victims.

In The Classroom Or Office

If you are in a classroom, room or office, STAY THERE, secure the door and turn off the lights.
Remain silent.
If the door has no lock and the door opens in, a heavy door wedge can be kept on hand and used, otherwise look for heavy furniture to barricade the door.
If the door has a window, cover it.
Depending on the gunmen’s location, you may also exit through windows. Have someone watch as you get as many students out through windows as calmly and as quietly as possible.
If the windows do not open, you cannot break them, or you are not on a ground floor, get out of sight from the door and stay low and quiet.
If no police units are on scene, move well away from the incident and find safe cover positions (not the parking lots) and wait for the police to arrive.
When police officers arrive, while keeping your hands on top of your head and do exactly what the police tell you to do.

In Hallways Or Corridors

If in the hallways, get in a room that is not already secured and secure it.
Unless you are very close to an exit, do not run through a long hall to get to one, as you may encounter the gunmen or hostage taker.

In Large Rooms Or Auditoriums

If in a gym or theater area and the gunmen are not present, move to an external exit and move toward any police unit.
Drop all bags and keep your hands on your head.
Do what the police tell you to do.

Open Spaces

Stay alert and look for appropriate cover locations. Hard cover, such as brick walls, large trees, retaining walls, parked vehicles, and any other object that may stop bullets, may be utilized as cover.

Trapped With The Gunmen

If you are trapped with the gunmen, don’t do anything to provoke them.
If they are not shooting, do what they say and don’t move suddenly.
There is no set procedure in this situation.
If possible, call X5911 or 281.290.5911 and talk with a police dispatcher.
If you cannot speak, leave the phone line open so the police can hear what is going on.
If they do start shooting people, you need to make a choice: stay still and hope they do not shoot you, run for an exit while zigzagging, or attack the shooter.
If you chose to run, a zigzagging moving target is much harder to hit than a straight runner.
Playing dead may also be a consideration.
It is not a recommendation to attack the shooter, but remember that you have a choice to fight when there are no other options.
The last thing that the shooter will expect is to be attacked by you.

Ted Nugent claims his ‘buddies’ are willing to start an armed revolt

Detroit-born southern rockabilly Ted Nugent isn’t known for moderation, but from the sound of his latest comments, the re-election of President Barack Obama (D) has made him ever more extreme.

Speaking to fans during an NBC-sponsored gun show, Nugent said that Obama “is attempting to re-implement the tyranny of King George that we escaped from in 1776,” adding: “If you want another Concord bridge, I’ve got some buddies.”

The comment was a reference to the Battle of Concord, in which a British soldier broke a standoff and fired upon assembled American militiamen, in what later became known as “the shot heard around the world” that helped launch the Revolutionary War.

I’m sure the FBI and Secret Service would like to talk to Ted about his buddies. I wonder if Ted knows shitting your pants doesn’t get you out of jail?
