Obama to Receive Israel’s Presidential Medal of Distinction

Another event for the wingnuts to ignore
World • Views: 31,251

You know that universal wingnut talking point that President Obama is “antisemitic” and despises Israel?

Well, here’s the reality: On Israel Trip, Obama to Get Medal.

(CNN) - When President Barack Obama visits Israel next month, he’ll be awarded the Presidential Medal of Distinction, Israeli President Shimon Peres’ office announced Monday.

Obama, the first sitting U.S. president to receive the recognition, will be awarded the medal for making “a unique and significant contribution to strengthening the State of Israel and the security of its citizens,” according to a release announcing the news.

One of my wingnut acquaintances seems to think this is Israel trying “behavior modification,” that by giving Obama the medal, Israel will inspire him to take a more “pro-Israel” slant.

Some folks aren’t even on speaking terms with reality.

Watch the white nationalist portion of the right start to exert even more influence by turning people’s ODS into being against Israel because they gave Obama this medal. Remember anyone who likes Obama is automatically not to be trusted.

From the policies he advances and the weak selections he makes for positions such as Secretary of Defense in the form of Chuck Hagel, it would be fair to say that President Obama might turn out to be Neville Chamberlain.”

47 lawhawk  Mon, Feb 18, 2013 12:18:07pm

This goes back to something else that has been simmering on the RWNJ and fringe right sites in both the US and Israel. They’re busy claiming that the President and Sec. State Kerry are both about to seriously change the relationship between Israel and the US by withholding funds.

That, of course, is sheer nonsense but there’s a kernel of information in that derpitude.

The information I’m referring to is that the sequester calls for across the board cuts to all programs, regardless of importance or significance to domestic and foreign policy.

The sequester was passed by Congress and signed into law by the President because Congress and the President couldn’t come to an agreement on a spending/cut/tax hike plan that could begin to reduce the deficit and basically be pain free (because no politician wants to admit the reality that there are costs to keep things the way they are - either hikes in taxes or cuts in services). Well, the sequester would affect the foreign policy budget just as surely as any other part of the federal budget affected by the sequester.

It’s not some secret plan. It’s been known from the moment it was proposed that it would hit foreign policy appropriations, including those to Israel.

The President isn’t targeting Israel for these cuts, nor is he changing the relationship between Israel and the US. It’s the sequester in action, should it take effect in March after Congress again fails to come up with an alternative plan.

That’s what this is about - and the wingnuts are in full flail mode trying to attack the president for cutting aid to Israel.

The foreign policy aid cuts would result in a 10% cut across the board as per the sequester legislation. Aid to Egypt, Israel, Pakistan, and anywhere else that the US is sending foreign aid would be cut 10% if there’s no action to change the sequester.

And to change the sequester means that Congress has to pass the legislation for the president to sign. It isn’t happening out of the ether.

As much as the wingnuts want to blame Obama for some kind of policy change vis-a-vis Israel, that simply isn’t true.

The cooler heads in both Israel and the US know this.

Keene said much has changed since the 1994 passage of the since-expired federal assault weapons ban, which amounted to a policy defeat for the NRA.

“The difference between today and 15 years ago is that today, guns are cool,” Keene said.

The Deficit Chart That Should Embarrass Budget Hawks

Here’s a pretty important fact that virtually everyone in Washington seems oblivious to: The federal deficit has never fallen as fast as it’s falling now without a coincident recession.

To be specific, CBO expects the deficit to shrink from 8.7% of GDP in fiscal 2011 to 5.3% in fiscal 2013 if the sequester takes effect and to 5.5% if it doesn’t. Either way, the two-year deficit reduction — equal to 3.4% of the economy if automatic budget cuts are triggered and 3.2% if not — would stand far above any other fiscal tightening since World War II.

Until the aftermath of the Great Recession, there were only three such periods in which the deficit shrank by a cumulative 2% of GDP or more. The 1960-61 and 1969-70 episodes both helped bring about a recession.

Far steeper deficit cuts during the demobilization from World War II and in 1937-38 both precipitated economic reversals.

Now the deficit is shrinking about 50% faster than it did during the booming late 1990s, when the jobless rate was falling south of 5% and tax revenues were soaring — without tax hikes.

Chart

This is a chart you will never see in the “liberal” media. A chart published in the most conservative rag in the nation basically, calling all the right wing deficit doom and gloom bullshit. David Gregory, where are you?

I consider Diamond’s popular books to be just that - popularizations of topics that are almost intractable due to their complexity.

At least he tries to paint a bigger picture covering human past and future.

I quite liked ‘The Third Chimpanzee’ but found some of the value judgments he made based on incomplete info in Guns, Germs and Steel a bit annoying. Once you get past the way he presents things, or take it for what it is, a popularization, his books are enlightening.

“Firelands”… are they referring to the rivers?

The Firelands or Sufferers’ Lands tract was located at the western end of the Connecticut Western Reserve in what is now the U.S. state of Ohio. The land was set aside for residents of the Connecticut towns of Danbury, Fairfield, Greenwich, Groton, New Haven, New London, Norwalk, and Ridgefield who lost their homes in 1779 and 1781 due to fires set by British forces during the American Revolutionary War.

My mother grew up in the Firelands.

Gee, NY metro has been flirting with drought conditions for the past couple of years. The only thing that’s kept it from having serious water issues has been a spate of hurricanes, nor’easters and blizzards to bring water levels and precipitation levels to anything approaching normal.

Rather than having periodic gentle rainfall or moderate snowfalls, we’re getting fewer moderate events here, but when it does rain, it’s more likely to be a torrential or catastrophic event.

But science, how does it work? /

The Third Age of mankind…

It was the dawn of the third age of mankind, ten years after the Earth-Minbari War. The Babylon Project was a dream given form. Its goal: to prevent another war by creating a place where humans and aliens could work out their differences peacefully. It’s a port of call, home away from home for diplomats, hustlers, entrepreneurs, and wanderers. Humans and aliens wrapped in two million, five hundred thousand tons of spinning metal, all alone in the night. It can be a dangerous place, but it’s our last, best hope for peace. This is the story of the last of the Babylon stations. The year is 2258. The name of the place is Babylon 5.

But the AP story doesn’t just leap from “apparent contradiction” to “junk science” the way Hoft does. It explains why the “contradiction” is, in fact, only apparent:

Ten climate scientists say the idea of less snow and more blizzards makes sense: A warmer world is likely to decrease the overall amount of snow falling each year and shrink snow season. But when it is cold enough for a snowstorm to hit, the slightly warmer air is often carrying more moisture, producing potentially historic blizzards.

Maybe Hoft just didn’t read that far.

Hoft is a barometer of the lowest common denominator. Willfully misunderstanding a subject creates the base justification for dismissing it. Any potential bit of information that could possible be construed as counterintuitive is therefore accepted as contradiction, therefore, structural fault.

The very existence of complexity or nuance is in and of itself justification for dismissal.

WND is running a new 10 commandments campaign. I’ll quote, but won’t link:

The campaign kicks off this week with 11 major billboards – all in the heart of what some call “sin city,” Las Vegas. Farah is asking for contributions from those who recognize the Ten Commandments represent the glue that holds civilization together to take the campaign nationwide.

“The problem is America is not limited to atheists, agnostics, cults and non-believers,” says Farah. “In fact, the biggest problem America has is with those who call themselves believers but who act no differently than the worldliest individuals on the planet. You can call these people backslidden. You can call them false converts. Or you can call them undiscipled, nominal believers. What they all have in common is they are not in obedience to God. They are not even trying to follow the most basic moral law, as Jesus and the prophets all instructed.”

With that in mind, Farah is planning to erect hundreds of Ten Commandments billboards around the country in a move that is sure to annoy the American Civil Liberties Union and the organized atheists with the help of like-minded and like-spirited partners.

“The goal is two-fold,” Farah says. “I want to prick the consciences of believers and non-believers alike, and I want Americans to see the basis of all our laws as handed down by God at Mount Sinai in hopes they will repent of their sins and turn back to their Creator.”

Mozart wrote pretty, complex tunes for small orchestra and light opera. Bright kid, but he burned out like a member of The Pretenders and croaked.

It would be interesting to see, if he had lived longer, if he grew a set of stones like Beethoven did, and write masterpieces. He may have just continued to be a pop music writer in his dotage. Pretty, complex, but ultimately empty.

Update: the audio tape clears Alec Baldwin of the NY Post’s racial slur charge: [Link: www.tmz.com…]

339 Dark_Falcon  Mon, Feb 18, 2013 2:50:34pm

The racist asshole who slapped a black baby on an airplane has gotten canned from his job:

Joe Hundley, the airline passenger who is accused of slapping a 19-month-old baby after telling his mother to shut that “n*gger baby up,” has been fired by his employer, according to KARE TV.

Al Haase, the president and CEO of Aerospace and Defense, Composite Group released this statement regarding the matter:

“Reports of the recent behavior of one of our business unit executives while on personal travel are offensive and disturbing.”

He called Hundley’s behavior “embarrassing” and “contradictory to our values.”

As we reported, Hundley, 60, was charged with simple assault after he allegedly hit the 19-month-old boy who had started to cry.

Jessica Bennett, the child’s mother, says her son began crying as the pressure changed when the plane descended. She says that’s when Hundley allegedly slapped her son.

According to court documents, Bennett alleges Hundley leaned over and said, “Shut that [N-word] baby up!” before slapping the child and causing him to bleed and cry even harder.

According to the AGC Aerospace and Defense, Composites Group statement, the company has taken the matter very seriously and says that as of Sunday, Hundley is no longer employed with them.

The Composites Group just threw out the trash.

Read a short story a few years back about a guy who invents a time machine and uses it rescue his favorite composer who had a reputation for drugs, womanizing and was presumed to have died during a plague.

So he brings the guy to the modern day and shows him how people are still listening to his work and how he can keep being a great composer of classical music. Korean mass transit moving towards wireless power

The world is slowly making the switch over to electric power, and while some mass transit systems have been powered by electricity for a while, it’s usually delivered through overhead cables that connect to the buses and trains at all times. However, Korea is moving away from overhead cables in favor of wireless power to its mass transit vehicles.

…The technology uses inductive charging to wirelessly transmit electricity from the ground to coils underneath the floor of electric vehicles. The ground has embedded power cables that transmit electricity to the pick-up coils. So far during testing, engineers have recorded an 85% transmission efficiency with the cables and coils.

Wireless power? Cool!

I will cancel polls, says Ahmadinejad in fresh power bid

President Ahmadinejad of Iran has warned that he could scrap this summer’s presidential election, threatening to drag the Islamic Republic into a constitutional crisis as he attempts to retain power.

With months to go until Iranians vote for his successor in June, Mr Ahmadinejad has reignited his bitter power struggle with Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader.

In an open letter published on his website at the weekend, Mr Ahmadinejad issued the veiled threat that if his right-hand man, Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei, is not approved as a presidential candidate, he could declare the election void and retain power himself.

Price of gas just before the housing bubble crash in 2008 was $4.15. Overall average during Bush’s 2nd term was higher than the past 4 years.

FAA Working To Fill The Sky With Drones

Last week, President Barack Obama approved legislation that will likely rapidly increase the use of drones for surveillance in the United States.

The FAA Modernization Act of 2012, which contains provisions to modernize aviation laws and to immediately integrate unmanned aircraft systems, was signed into law by Obama Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Federal Aviation Administration called on State and local governments as well as universities to compete to be the location of one of six unmanned aircraft test sites the agency will operate as mandated by the 2012 FAA Reauthorization Act. The agency says it will use the sites to better understand the dangers and benefits of domestic drones before they are fully introduced to the National Airspace System by 2015.

“We expect to learn how unmanned aircraft systems operate in different environments and how they will impact air traffic operations,” FAA Chief Michael Huerta said in a statement. “The test sites will inform the agency as we develop standards for certifying unmanned aircraft and determine necessary air traffic requirements.”

What if he’s found innocent?

Let me give you one little piece of the evidence that bothers me. That’s the witness statement, of this man who says he heard this, turned, and saw the slap.

The witness was sitting in row 1. The incident was in row 18. The flight was descending into Atlanta.

Ever been on a plane with a crying baby half the plane away? Every try to hear what anyone next to you, much less half the plane away, was saying?

So I’m torn. If he did it he deserves all the crap that can be delivered. But… did he do it? And should he be punished before all the facts come out?

The mother was in row 28. The witness was in row 16. He heard commotion behind him, got up and headed back, and saw the slap.

re: #378 Dark_Falcon

It’s not a problem, IMO: An employee who has had a scandal like that attach itself to him is a liability to his employer. As such, it is appropriate for the employer to fire him.

Regardless of truth. OK.

You have just described the core reason I object to “at will” states. The laws are passed to “protect the worker” from unions. Unions which, in this case, would tell the business to shove it. In other words they’re not to protect the worker, they’re to protect the company.

Because if this man turns out to be innocent, it doesn’t matter. He’s 60. As you said it’ll be a long time before the trial is finished. After a year he’s pretty much unemployable. Because he was fired he loses a bunch of benefits - and he can’t sue because it’s “right to work”.

He is screwed.

If he’s guilty that’s OK. But if he’s innocent… I have this apparently naive belief that one of the cornerstones of this nation is that our system tries to protect the innocent, to prevent harm to the extent possible to those falsely accused. Apparently that nation does not exist. Instead if you hamper that bottom line you just need to go away. Don’t let your corpse block the driveway, please, the janitor was outsourced last week.

I don’t think it’s apower play as much as an attempt at self preservation. Ahmedinijad’s close associates have been being arrested over the past couple years. A very close ally of his even defected while in New York for the UN speech because he was afraid of being arrested on his return to Iran. Like many authoritarian countries, they have no mercy for those who leave power. Unless Ahmedinijad has a close ally replace him then he risks being arrested and tried for something after he leaves office.

There was the campaign meme that the real, evil Obama would be unleashed in his second term… hating on Israel with his preacher. The irony here is the actual Obama is someone who obviously feels quite close to Jewish people as his own friendships and associations prove.

Tucker Carlson: Every Wiccan a nerd or a ‘twice-divorced older woman’

Tucker Carlson, the founder of The Daily Caller, attacked Wicca on Sunday, mocking the minority religion for allegedly having too many holidays.

Carlson appeared on the Fox News show Fox & Friends Sunday to discuss the University of Missouri’s “Holiday and Recommended Accommodations” guide, which lists eight Wiccan holidays.

“The bad side of Wiccanism is it’s obviously a form of witchcraft,” he said. “But the upside is you get a ton of holidays. Twenty percent of all school holidays, as described by the University of Missouri, are Wiccan holidays. Twenty percent of all.”

Though the Fox & Friends Sunday hosts suggested Wiccans received special treatment, the guide does not recommend any accommodations for Wiccan holidays, unlike many of the other religious holidays listed.

Michael Moore: Report Of Planned Iran Trip Is A “Prank”

“Someone is playing a prank,” Moore said via email.

“Are you serious? Really?” Moore said when asked whether he gave the quotes in question to that outlet. “I did tell them that I once shot a unicorn in Reno (or was it Elko?) just to watch it die. And then I ate it. After I took it to Uranus. Flew coach with Kim Kardashian. Who has carried three of my babies. But we dropped two of them off on Jupiter because the schools are better.”

An Iranian news report quoted Moore saying that “I am now waiting for an opportunity to travel to Iran. Even if they do not invite me this time I will go anyway.”

Moore allegedly told Mehrnameh magazine that he had previously planned to visit Iran, but “the right-wing media in the US began to take a position and published some very critical and hateful articles, they even published faked news about me. So I thought I should postpone visiting Iran to another time

Based on my own experiences and those of my best friend, one of the big concerns for a company is also liability, and some of their actions are dictated by their liability insurance provider. The firm needs to protect itself from risk, and if they allowed Handley to keep working pending the outcome of a trial and were in that interim sued by someone claiming Handley had racially discriminated against him/her, then they’d face the allegation that they had failed to act to stop someone they knew was a problem, which could amount to hundreds of thousands in additional damages.

re: #426 Sionainn

What makes you think that the mother and the witness made this up about this man?

Read the whole thing I said. I don’t know either way. I have questions that need answered in a trial.

The biggest? How did this man get out of his seat and halfway down the aisle during final descent?

The second biggest? Since they got seats wrong what else did they get wrong? (Flight 721 is an airbus 320. It has 26 rows of seats.)

Why don’t we have an affidavit for the incident, at least for the language, from anyone in the seat to the side or in front of her?

Want a (made up just to answer your question) idea? Try this.

The accused is “genteel racist” - made it plain by implication and posture. And he did tell her to shut that damn baby up (but without the racist language). The woman, pissed, starts yelling “why’d you hit my baby?”. And the witness happens to be black (don’t know, making it for this line), and automatically supports the woman because she’s also black.

Chivington is Colorado’s most famous Civil War fighter (and Native American killer).

I know. He was a master at ambushes and the ‘indirect approach’, which was fine when he was fighting Gen. Sibley’s Texans but Chivington went on to use his idea of attacking an enemy’s base of supply to murder Indians at Sand Creek. He was a butcher of women and children and IMO second on the list of the Civil War’s monsters, exceeded only by Nathan Bedford Forrest.

re: #442 kirkspencer

And because she was yelling and the man was a southerner and the standing man supported it, a lot of other passengers expressed sympathy.

You want my guess, he’s guilty. I think he is.

But it does not change my core statement. He should not be punished, have his life destroyed, on the accusation.

Where are you getting that the flight was an Airbus 320? Sometimes it is and sometimes it is an MD90/Q which has 39 rows.

If you heard some man getting loud with a woman and crying baby, some men wouldn’t just sit there, regardless if the plane is getting ready to land or not.

The mother is white. The mother also apparently spent a fair bit of time in the back of the plane to get away from the drunk asshole.

And I said, what is the difference between a video from a drone, sent purposely or by chance, and a camera on a wall recording continuously? The latter I believe is admissible without question. Or, let’s be even more ridiculous; what is the difference between that and what a person, perhaps a police officer, saw without a warrant (repeatability ignored)?

re: #467 Gus

Actually Gus, the other new award you’ll agree with. From the article I posted above:

Meanwhile there is the other new award. Over the last seven years all the U.S. military services developed new decorations to recognize non-combat troops who have experienced combat on the ground. This is a result of the large number of non-combat troops who have been in combat because of the extensive attacks on convoys and American bases in Afghanistan and, especially, Iraq. Such attacks are not unique, as there was quite a lot of action against base camps, and supply convoys, during the Vietnam War and earlier conflicts. During World War II combat support troops often were told to grab their rifles and man the fighting line. This was particularly common in the Pacific. But in Iraq there have been weeks where the majority of casualties were among combat support troops. This was unheard of in past wars. So in recognition of that, there are now “Combat Badges” available for non-combat troops in the army, marines, and navy. The U.S. Air Force was the last to agree to offer such an award. Airmen have seen a lot of action defending convoys and bases in Iraq, and even the pilots (normally the only “combat” troops in the air force) are in favor of a badge to recognize the air force role in ground combat. Some pilots would be eligible for this badge. Pilots serve on the ground as air controllers with army combat units. The air controllers communicate with warplanes above and direct attack by aircraft. Earlier the air force thought it had solved the combat badge “problem” by earlier approving a gold border for the Expeditionary Service Ribbon. This ribbon is awarded to airmen who deploy overseas on a combat mission. The gold border would signify that the wearer had spent at least 45 consecutive days “supporting combat operations in a designated combat zone.” But the airmen, and air controllers, were still grumbling. So the air force brass agreed to offer a combat badge similar to the one awarded by the other services.

Here’s where I found out.

New medal for drone pilots outranks Bronze Star

…The service secretaries will make the final determination for awarding the Distinguished Warfare Medal.

The order of precedence came as a surprise to Doug Sterner, a military medals expert and the curator of the Military Times Hall of Valor, the largest database of military medal recipients.

“It’s got me puzzled,” Sterner said Wednesday. “I understand the need to recognize the guys at the console who are doing some pretty important things. But to see it ranking above the Bronze Star (with) V?”

Seriously hope they don’t approve this with it’s current precedence.

I believe there is at least one ex Presidential candidate writing for this loon, along with Ted Nugent and a few other well known names that I have forgotten.

America has never needed a campaign like this so badly, he says.

In a way Farah is right. No, not about erecting billboards with the 10 Commandments on them, but if religious people want to convince the rest of the world that they are onto something, they’d better start living their faith, starting with the log in their own eye before moving on to keeping their neighbor from having a good time.

He did plenty of real-life target practice as well, courtesy of his mother (to whom all his massacre guns were registered). At any rate, I based my comment on this from the CBS report:

They’ve also recovered what they called a “trove” of video games from the basement of Lanza’s home. Sources say Lanza spent countless hours there alone, in a private gaming room with the windows blacked out, honing his computer shooting skills.

Lanza also made multiple visits to nearby gun ranges with his mother, Nancy Lanza, where they practiced together with actual weapons. Three guns, all registered to Nancy Lanza, were used in the Sandy Hook massacre. Lanza used a fourth weapon to kill his mother before his attack on the school.
