This is the first track from the latest live album by British guitar phenomenon Guthrie Govan and his band The Aristocrats, with the equally gifted Marco Minneman and Bryan Beller on drums and bass. Here’s the album; if you’re into guitar pyrotechnics, it doesn’t get much more impressive than this: Boing, We’ll Do It Live! the Aristocrats at Alvas Showroom.
Three priests and a former priest have filed complaints to the Vatican alleging that Cardinal Keith O’Brien, who heads the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland, approached them in an inappropriate manner.
Actually, that was a part of the last episode that really worked … when Merle saw the scars on Daryl’s back and we realized that they had both been horribly abused children.
Merle is just a misunderstood brute of a serial killer.
I saw an article which made the case Merle already is a zombie, he just doesn’t happen to be dead yet. He doesn’t give a damn about any other survivors and would kill any of them in a heartbeat to get what wants.
I saw an article which made the case Merle already is a zombie, he just doesn’t happen to be dead yet. He doesn’t give a damn about any other survivors and would kill any of them in a heartbeat to get what wants.
The zombies are vital to the overall plot, but almost incidental to the real stories. “The Walking Dead” are the living people.
Is morality a luxury? One might think that, in a world overrun by zombies, setting up an ethical code should take a backseat to survival. But the strongest moments in Sunday’s othewise lackluster Walking Dead made the opposite case, using a breakdown in the relationship between brothers Merle and Darryl as a case study in why morality would and should be a central concern in a post-apocalyptic world.
The brothers begin feuding in the woods, as the meager spoils of their hunting efforts lead Darryl to question whether they shouldn’t make a beeline back for the well-stocked prison. But the real rift emerges when they spy a small group of survivors fighting a losing battle against a group of walkers. Darryl sees people in trouble who need his help. But Merle sees useless dead weight to whom he owes nothing. “They ain’t never cooked me a meal,” he sniffs.
However close Darryl and Merle may have been at one point (even morally speaking, as they apparently planned to rob the prison group when they first encountered it), the conflict over the embattled group on the highway reveals how far they’ve grown. Darryl believes human life is something worth protecting irrespective of utility. Like a normal person, he believes leaving people to die when you can save them to be a grave moral ill. It’s such an important part of his moral character that he barely hesitates to run in, crossbow blazing, and save the day. Merle is left little choice but to follow his brother but, in a nice touch, he saunters towards the battle in a fashion resembling nothing more than a walker’s shuffle, his move away from humanity reflected in his actual movement.
Kid is watching Oscar in the other room I’d watch for any possible live renditions from Les Mis, but it’s not worth slogging thru it all. I don’t really care.
Had dinner tonite with old older friends and just found out that the wife was diagnosed with Parkinsons last Dec. We knew something was wrong, but she had other possible issues.

The government of Afghanistan has banned elite American forces from operating in the province of Maidan Wardak, claiming that Afghans working with US special forces have been involved with the torture and killing of villagers in the area. The province, which is adjacent to the Afghan capital of Kabul, has been a strategic buffer against the Taliban and key to the defense of the capital.
US officials were told on Sunday afternoon of the Afghan government’s decision, which it reached after trying to get answers from the US about the torture and killing accusations. Afghan defense officials provided the US with photographs and video of the alleged perpetrators, but did not receive any immediate response or action from US forces.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s office released a statement saying that during a meeting of Afghanistan’s National Security Council, “It became clear that armed individuals named as U.S. special force stationed in Wardak province engage in harassing, annoying, torturing and even murdering innocent people.”
The banning is being viewed as a serious signal that Afghan officials are willing to confront and assert authority over US special forces as conventional combat troops begin to take on only an advisory role. Afghanistan claims it had been trying for weeks to get answers and believed that there had been some headway until American officials denied that the men in question had ever worked with or for US forces.

Of course they’re desperate. There’s 60 votes lined up to vote for cloture, and Reid has said he will not honor any holds, leaving the GOP without a card to play. Short of some major “controversy” that bring a vote or two back into their hands, Hagel’s nomination will be confirmed this week.

From Arutz Sheva:
It called upon the new president to make resolving the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA) a top priority “early in his presidency” and to override “certain domestic constituencies.”
From the report:
A new U.S. effort to reach an Israeli-Pale stinian agreement may anger certain domestic constituencies. We do not, however, believe it is beyond the capability of any American President to explain to the American people why this long-running dispute must at long last be ended and why it will take much diplomatic heavy lifting and public expenditure to make it work. In the end the stakes are too high to pursue a hands-off or arm’s-length approach.
Following a CBS News report that investigators had found a “trove” of video games in the home of Newtown shooter Adam Lanza, conservatives like Glenn Beck jumped to the conclusion that the games had been a “gateway drug” to the slaughter at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
But during a panel discussion on Sunday, former FBI profiler Mary Ellen O’Toole said evidence did not support that theory.
“It’s my experience that video games do not cause violence,” O’Toole told CBS News. “However, it is one of the risk variables when we do a threat assessment for the risk to act out violently.”
“It’s important that I point out that as a threat assessment and as a former FBI profiler, we don’t see these as the cause violence,” she added. “We see them as sources of fueling ideation that’s already there.”
Texas A&M International University psychology professor Christopher Ferguson pointed out that youth violence had recently declined to the lowest level in 40 years at a time when video games had become more violent.
Time for us to leave. They don’t want us there, and we can’t afford to be there. Let them clean up their own fucking mess. They let the Taliban in and then expected help in getting rid of them after they found out just how bad they were. Sadly, they found the price for cleaning up their mess was higher than they wanted to pay. Let em stew

DALLAS — The four-alarm fire that engulfed the DFW Gun Range at 1607 West Mockingbird Lane in Dallas Sunday afternoon was apparently triggered by unauthorized tracer rounds.
Heavy black smoke was visible from downtown Dallas.
About 50 people were inside the gun range when the fire broke out, but all were able to escape safely.
The company’s Web site listed a number of classes on Sunday, including an “Introduction to Handguns” scheduled at 3:15 p.m.
“It was pretty scary,” said one range patron who gave his name as Brett. “There are a bunch of bullets in there, and there’s not telling how far or when they’re going to go off.
When teeth are so white they don’t look like teeth. When they’re super white and all lined up perfectly in the right light you can’t see the individual teeth and just look like this white plastic teeth guard.
There’s an absolutely stunning documentary called Mythos Wald by a German filmmaker named Jan Haft. I saw the full 90 min. HD version with English voice-over on YouTube last year, so I know it’s out there somewhere, but I can’t find it anywhere right now (it’s long gone from YouTube).
It’s reminiscent of the BBC’s Planet Earth series narrated by Attenborough, though obviously much shorter in duration. The visuals though, OMG—the forests really make you see where all the European fairy tales came from—I’m sure your grandkids would love it, so grab it if you ever run across the English version.
Oh, wait. I take that back. Here it is in 2 parts, but it’s ruined by a Russian narrator talking over the voice of the German one. *sigh* Still, you’ll be able to see how amazing the video is.

Possibly, I wouldn’t be surprised either way. But at least there’s not a Republican in the white house so it’s probably not going to be a huge scandal even if true.

Exactly. If this had come out under George W. Bush it would be on the front page of the New York Times tomorrow.

Night Lizards. Sorry to have stirred the pot and then bail, but 0400 does come early. But as far as U.S. Special Forces engaging in the kidnapping/torture/murder of Afghan Nationals. It doesn’t pass the smell test. Now if you replace U.S. forces with Taliban/A.Q. operatives wearing U.S./Coalition Uniforms, that I could believe. They have done it before when infiltrating bases for suicide bomb attacks.
Exactly. If this had come out under George W. Bush it would be on the front page of the New York Times tomorrow.

I think the general reaction from everybody, or at least in the USA, is being a little bit stumped. All they did was read a statement and not much else. Kind of pissed me off a little but. Never liked Karzai.
From the looks of the allegations (even if true) it seems Obama left himself enough degrees of separation to invoke plausible deniability. Afghan troops working loosely with US special forces, something went a little too far. Ooops, you won’t find a white sheet justifying this but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t used to our advantage. Shit happens.

I think it’s because (A) It’s Sunday and many of the analysts for US/UK outfits are off work, (B) The student supposedly abducted and killed was tortured in ways that the US does not engage in (ripping off whole fingers is far more crude than we need to be, but its the kind of cruelty Al Qaeda enjoys) (C) It’s pretty heavily at odds with how Obama has stated he wants to do business.

Irrelevant, since the Taliban and Al Qaeda aren’t targeting US and western opinion with this. They’re trying to enrage Afghans in order to prevent the Afghan Government from signing a status-of-forces agreement containing protection for US troops from Afghan courts. Without that, we have to leave entirely.

Yeah, it’s pretty silly. Even if this was ordinary police work. They find a mutilated body and suddenly they’re like “the Americans did this!”
Misplaced my digital camera. I saw it a few days ago and can’t find it now. I don’t really need it right now, but its frustrating now to be able to find it.

Those plot twists are why I love this show.
I’ve noticed a lot of praise for Norman Reedus from fellow cast members. Steve Yeun talked about the interaction between him & Michael Rooker (Merle) on Talking Dead last week. The way those two played it, that scene finally made Merle seem like a human being for me, for the first time ever - and that took some doing.
That little change in Merle was one of the most satisfying moments in the show for me since the barn massacre last season.
Heh, Seth McFarland made a Jew joke earlier and people were like, “it’s just a joke man.” Now, he just made a gay joke… let’s see what the response is.
Yeah, it’s pretty silly. Even if this was ordinary police work. They find a mutilated body and suddenly they’re like “the Americans did this!”
This is why the torture techniques we used are so damaging…aside from the moral and legal questions, it lends some credence to any future allegations, even totally false ones. We have it on the record. We are not above torture.
If nothing about the Iraq War seemed to set a precedent to you, I don’t know what to say. Lynndie England did not invent torture, but the prison was conclusively proven to have tortured inmates, systemically.

There’s being told to say that by fanatics who know where their kids go to school. Of course, if the Taliban get their way they’ll close the school, but few in Afghanistan are really willing to risk their wrath on something major as this. Because to protect something this important to them, the Talibs would blow up a school during the school day. They want our soec. ops people gone that bad.

Nah, Frank did the nation a solid on this sort of thing when he smacked down Eason Jordan after the CNN bigwig had started DERPing at Davos that the US was “targeting journalists” in Iraq. Barney Frank told him to back up the allegation or shut up, and Jordan had to do the latter since he had nothing. CNN then proceeded to fire his lying ass.
So no, no Barney Frank jokes will be told on this one.

They weren’t ‘kids’, though. The ringleader at Abu Ghraib, Charles Grainer, was north of 30 and an experienced prison guard when this happened. He wasn’t a kid, he was an asshole sadist who liked to hurt people, worse than many of the inmates he was supposed to guard.

More info nobody actually cares about. I bartended with one of the two guys who started the Onion back in Madison. It was just a weekly paper back then.
He used to leave me all the change for my share of the tips. Seniority.
Argo was a excellent mid-budget movie, well liked by critics and a decent success at the box office. That’s the sort of film that has excellent Oscar potential.
A team of state scientists has outlined serious concerns about the damage South Carolina will suffer from climate change — threats that include invading eels, dying salt marshes, flooded homes and increased diseases in the state’s wildlife.
But few people have seen the team’s study. The findings are outlined in a report on global warming that has been kept secret by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources for more than a year because agency officials say their “priorities have changed.”
[…]
“Scientists in all divisions of the DNR are concerned over the potential impacts of climate change on natural resources,” the draft report says.”DNR recognizes climate change as a real phenomenon, grounded in numerous scientific studies, and DNR recognizes that thoughtful and careful planning is needed in order to protect the natural resources of the Palmetto State and to benefit its citizens in the future.”
Team members left little doubt in the report that they believe rising global temperatures are linked to man-made pollution. That point is widely accepted in the scientific community. Data show sharp increases since the Industrial Revolution of pollutants, such as carbon dioxide, that cause global warming.
Some conservative politicians, however, have questioned the science and criticized efforts to curb greenhouse gases, fearing it will hurt industries by imposing unnecessary regulations.
Bob Perry, a DNR official and the climate report’s editor, said completing the study isn’t a major point of emphasis now that his agency is under new leadership.
“A lot of things have changed for the agency, and our priorities have changed,” Perry said.
Meanwhile, over at the overtly racist WND, the editors run an intentionally inflammatory (and misleading) titled article by Ben Kinchlow (of 700 Club scam) called “Father of U.S. slavery was a black man”, which serves to open the door for every kind of stupid comment over there.
If you mean that Onion tweet, I agree that it is utterly indefensible. The Onion just burned all the good will they had with me on this one.
Oh, come off it, D_F.
What would have been worse would have been if they didn’t delete it (and if they don’t apologize for it); the fact that it’s gone means that The Onion management doesn’t approve of that message. Of course, I also wonder if the account might have been compromised.
If the Twitter account wasn’t hacked and the tweeter hasn’t already lost their job over this, they should.

Misogyny is a tough one. I could tell it was wrong, but had to check what I thought was right. There’s debate over whether it was racism too. Fucking rude might suffice.
Thanks for paging this Gus. The Onion needs to be called out hard on this one. Not acceptable as satire or anything else. And to me, anyone excusing this because it is supposedly satire, plays into the hands of the likes of Rush Limbaugh and his defenders when they uses that crap of an excuse for dumping all over women.
I am glad they deleted it, but would like to see a sincere apology.

Ah, the Oscars. A long time ago and a galaxy far far away I once thought about writing a screenplay or original story that got turned into a blockbuster and would then have to do the red carpet rounds. Still have that idea brewing, but the show itself hasn’t done it for me in years.
It was on because the Mrs. wanted to see the dresses and the winners. I would have preferred (and did end up watching) a significant chunk of a Dr. Who special on BBC America.
The Academy Awards show itself has been barely watchable for years. MacFarlane hosting wasn’t going to change that and how good or bad he was I think depended on whether you got his humor or not. Then again, it really isn’t his fault.
It’s the format.
The producers have a scheme and they adhere to it. Monologue that usually goes on for too long, way too many uninspired bits, and then they chop off the one part that has any chance for spontaneity - the winners’ speeches.
If the winner goes long, they get drowned out by music. I will give the producers credit for swapping out the usual morose music to drown out the winners if they go long with the infamous music from Jaws. Only place to go from there is the hook from stage left literally pulling them off stage.
Even with all that looming, they still ran long. I don’t get that.
And that supposed big treatment of 007? Lame. They even managed to take two of the best singers to do 007 themes and wasted them. Adele and Bassey could have belted out one heck of a duet riffing on any number of songs in the 007 catalog, but instead it was a static thing. How inspired was that?
The kerfuffle over FLOTUS giving out the Best Picture award? Much ado about nothing. No real need for her involvement, but didn’t hurt things either.
Seems that the biggest takeaway from the night is that TheOnion nuked itself (with no fridge) with its totally uncalled for and vile comment about Quvenzhané Wallis.
I was watching the Dr. Who special as well, I loved the Cybermen, and all of the campy props. I realized that this was shot when people had 13” black and white screens?! I thought the actors were going to bump into the camera.
Kent: Mr. Simpson, how do you respond to the charges that petty vandalism such as graffiti is down eighty percent, while heavy sack-beatings are up a shocking nine hundred percent?
Homer: Aw, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent. Forfty percent of all people know that.
LOL, Edited to add the following line in the scene:
Kent: I see. Well, what do you say to the accusation that your group has been causing more crimes than it’s been preventing?
Homer: [amused] Oh, Kent, I’d be lying if I said my men weren’t committing crimes.

AFAIC deleting it means squat if not followed by a sincere & profuse apology. Their silence is deafening. They’ve already let it fester for far too many hours—it may not ruin them, but it’s sure as hell gonna leave a nasty mark.

They actually have comments open on the Fox story on the main page about Michelle Obama’s appearance at the Oscars. Not too many yet, but there should be lots of racism, misogyny, and overall crassness. Wonder how long it’ll be before Fox shuts it down again.
I don’t know. I unfollowed them as soon as I read this Page, and I’m too pissed at them to go to their site. I imagine someone will let us know either here or via Twitter if they do.

They’re all huddled in a room somewhere trying to figure out the best way to get into CYA mode. They’d be better off owning up to it, sending out an official apology, and then doing everything in their power to apologize to that beautiful young lady and make amends. Make whoever did it fly out to make a personal apology, then have to personally escort her around Disney for 2 weeks.

Exactly. Any reputable social media PR firm would’ve told them to get on top of it and issue an apology ASAP and leave the CYA for later. The longer they remain silent, the worse the fallout is going to be. Internet hours are like frigging days in real life.
Oh the Onion….what assholes. Not for just for posting that garbage but not even apologizing? I’m not going to visit their website ever again. I don’t care how funny anything is going forward.

Oh wow…looks like the Onion wasn’t alone in sheer misogynist douchebaggery:

Yeah, I didn’t watch either, but I read about the other douchebaggery when reading about the Onion tweet. I’m glad I missed seeing it.
I was just over at the cesspool HuffPo and would you believe there are actually people over there defending the Onion? Here’s a sample…

Crude, but it’s The Onion! If you think they were seriously demeaning a 9yo girl, then you need your head checked.

Typical over-the-top Onion humor. If anyone is shocked by this, they’ve never actually read their work. Take a deep breath, people. Just a joke.
Oh, I don’t know. I thought some of his jokes were crass, but at the end of the day, it’s Seth MacFarlane. It’s like being shocked or offended by South Park for making a tasteless joke.
Personally, I loved his Lincoln joke, and his recovery line when people reacted. And his dig at the Academy for snubbing Ben Affleck was good, too. But the highlight for me was his introduction of Meryl Streep. The rest I could take or leave, which is par for the course with his humor for me. With Family Guy there might be a couple of good lines here and there but most episodes barely get a chuckle from me. This was no different.

The advisory, which was posted on the embassy’s webpage, urged staffers to exercise caution in their dealings in the area pending further notice.

So the Onion said something offensive? That’s news. Yes, using the c-word to describe a 9 year old is wrong, even in jest. If this requires some kind of internet payback, go after the Onion’s advertisers. It’s what we do to assholes like Rush Limbaugh.
Anything less is simply internet noise they’re willing to listen to for three days until it goes away.

Iran has dismissed the awarding of an Oscar to the film Argo as an “advertisement for the CIA” and a Zionist plot to misrepresent an event arising from the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The Washington Post quoted Fars News as writing:
“In a rare occasion in Oscar history, the First Lady announced the winner for Best Picture for the anti-Iran Film ‘Argo,’ which is produced by the Zionist company Warner Bros.”
The Associated Press wrote that while Argo was not being shown in Iranian cinemas, bootleg DVD copies had created a buzz, with discussion divided along generational lines.
The film — depicting the escape of American Embassy staff from Tehran during the hostage crisis — has been roundly criticized by Iranians who took part in the Revolution, while those too young to recall events first-hand take a different view, the AP wrote.
The AP quoted Tehran City Council member Masoomeh Ebtekar — one of the students who occupied the US Embassy in which 52 Americans were held hostage for 444 days — as saying Argo exaggerated the violence during the storming of the compound.
This creates a bit of a quandary for wingnuts…who do they hate more? Iran or President Obama? On the one hand you have radical Islamists who want to destroy America, and on the other hand you have FUCKING IRAN!!!

Once again, House Republicans are in a predicament on the Violence Against Women Act. The legislation, aimed at combating domestic abuse, is political dynamite with women voters, and for that reason GOP leaders desperately want the issue off the table. But they can’t figure out how to make that happen now any more than they could last year, during an election.
House GOP leaders find themselves unable to appease simultaneously House conservatives and advocates against domestic violence. The two factions are at an impasse on new protections for gays, illegal immigrants and Native American women who suffer from domestic abuse. Anything that placates one side seems to aggravate the other. The legislation House Republicans unveiled Friday came after weeks of trying to resolve that tension, but fell short of the goal.
Bring it to a vote…upperdown. Don’t talk about it, just fucking do it. Problem solved.
The House leadership desperately wants to avoid going on the record on a party-line vote against the Violence Against Women Act. They know it will kill them with women voters in 2014.
An up or down vote on VAWA in the House would mean it gets defeated because of the gibbering morons in the House GOP caucus. That would give the Dems and the Obama administration a hell of an albatross to hang around their necks.

There are still conservative/Republican women, and many of them see the value of VAWA. It would hurt the GOP with their own female voters if they were perceived as the pro-domestic violence party.

In an embarrassing slip of the tongue, Mr Kerry last week praised US diplomats working to secure “democratic institutions” in the Central Asian country, which does not exist.
The newly minted diplomat was referring to Kyrgyzstan, a poor, landlocked nation of 5.5 million, which he appeared to confuse with its resource-rich neighbour to the north, Kazakhstan.
…Mr Kerry is not the first top US official to be left tongue-tied by post-Soviet geography, much of which was split up into a myriad “-stan” countries following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
In August 2008, then-President George W Bush mixed up Russia and its tiny southern neighbour Georgia, which were then at war, when he warned against possible efforts to depose “Russia’s duly elected government.”
The CAS program will identify users who appear to be involved in illegal peer-to-peer (p2p) file-sharing. It’s been dubbed Six Strikes because users believed to be sharing these copyrighted files will receive up to six alerts that increase in their degree of seriousness.
The CCI says the process begins with two Educational Alerts, followed by two “Acknowledgement” Alerts that require a response from the Subscriber, and two “Mitigation” Alerts that impose what the group calls “minor consequences to emphasize the seriousness of the problem.”
While it says the enforcement actions will vary from case to case, the CCI gives the following examples of “Mitigation” measures that could be taken:
A temporary reduction of Internet speed;
Redirection to a landing page until the primary account holder of your account contacts your ISP;
Redirection to a landing page where the primary account holder must review and respond to educational information.
Doing so would further destroy the so-called Hastert rule that requires a majority of a majority to bring an action to the floor.
Boehner’s already waived it a couple of times to get Sandy aid done, but if he keeps doing it, he’s all but scuttling that particular rule and it’s limitation on keeping the GOP caucus in line. It also shows the lengths to which Boehner has to go to get even ordinary business done. He’s had no choice but to cut deals with Democrats because he can’t get the nuttiest GOPers to get on board with what would otherwise be sensible legislation.
The TP wing of the GOP has totally embraced its inner hategasm and will block any and all legislation because they think it brings benefit to them politically, which defies all logic, reasoning, and even polling.
But this is the same TP that thought they had the 2012 election in the bag and that the polls were skewed to favor the Democrats.
Some pundits have argued that the GOP has to let the TP get its hategasm out of the way before moving on to really deal with the issues.
They’re missing the boat - and the bigger picture. To the TP, there is no moving on because they can’t tolerate Obama in the WH and any policies he might bring to the table, even when they’re repackaged GOP ideas (see: mandate, individual).
Extending legislation that had no rationale for lapsing in the first place becomes a battleground.
Extending the debt limit to match the already agreed upon appropriations becomes a huge mess and affects the credit worthiness of the nation, the borrowing capabilities of the states and localities, and inserts crazy amounts of uncertainty into the system.
But this is a crazy-stupid GOP that can’t even realize that Obama gave them a huge win on taxes when making permanent the Bush tax cuts on all but the richest percentage of the population, permanently shifting the tax argument and appropriate rates down.
The GOP is all or nothing, and seek scorched earth where they can’t get all of what they want.

Hmm. On the serious side of things is there any data on how well a Glock handles having 100 rounds fired through it in rapid order without any time off to cool while a clip is changed?
Not to mention some well-designed tolerances for the springs in that. Magazine design is not not something slapped together - you need sufficient tension to push the rounds up without so much that it causes jams due to too much pressure.
Yeah, but internet hours are like days in RL. If they had any sense they’d have been on it within the first hour after deleting the tweet.
I’m not saying it’s not a bad thing and it’s not a fuckup, but it’s not part of a pattern of behavior the way it was with Rush or anything. I hope they’re apologize, but it’s not like this is their standard fare.
On behalf of The Onion, I offer my personal apology to Quvenzhané Wallis and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the tweet that was circulated last night during the Oscars. It was crude and offensive—not to mention inconsistent with The Onion’s commitment to parody and satire, however biting.
No person should be subjected to such a senseless, humorless comment masquerading as satire.
The tweet was taken down within an hour of publication. We have instituted new and tighter Twitter procedures to ensure that this kind of mistake does not occur again.
In addition, we are taking immediate steps to discipline those individuals responsible.
Miss Wallis, you are young and talented and deserve better. All of us at The Onion are deeply sorry.

I really don’t find a less-than-24-hour turnaround to be slow, even in the internet age.
I’m gonna guess the Twittersphere disagrees as would many social media experts, but you’re certainly entitled to your opinion. I’m sure this episode and its fallout will be dissected and used as an example by said experts in the coming weeks & months.
Boehner is an adult public servant, not a 9 year old child actress.
Yeah, but everyone draws their line in a different place, don’t they? The Onion tweet has annoyed a lot of people who are in their target audience of moneyed middle-class relatively open-minded people, hence the apology.
A more accurate statement from them would have been: “we agree with the large number of people complaining that a 9-year old child is not appropriate subject matter for a joke based on a rude assessment of that person’s personality that flies in the face of the truth about that person”.
Man, that robocall was offensive.

I’ve had those calls. They start out “IF YOU ARE A SENIOR CITIZEN, YOU MUST LISTEN…” they are going on the assumption that older people are more obedient and will listen to a recorded sales pitch for something.
I don’t know what scheiss this robocall is pedding, I hang up on all robocalls.
Also, going back to this, WTF does The Onion have to apologize about when it comes to Chris Kyle? The fact that a fellow veteran dealing with a severe case of PTSD killed him?

Has any conservative yet try to turn themselves into a victim over The Onion controversy? You know, something like:

Remind me again which group are the radicals? Are the Dearborn Muslims out protesting every Sunday in front of the local Baptist and Catholic churches?
The Bible Believers also protested at last year’s Arab Festival, holding up both anti-Muslim and anti-Catholic signs and causing one Arab-American Muslim girl to cry.
That’s the thing with these assholes, that’s the lie of “Judeo-Christian”. These people are not just Christian Supremacists, they’re 7th Synod of Pete Supremacists, they’re Our Chapel of The Lord Supremacists. If they did kick out the Muslims, then they’d move on to the Catholics, and the Unitarians, and the Hindus, and the Buddhists, and the Presbyterians, and the Jews, etc. etc.

re: #423 Glenn Beck’s Grand Unifying Theory of Obdicut
I’ve had horse. It’s fine. It’s just another big animal. Why are people freaking out?
People tend to overreact to anything to do with things that involve putting things inside their bodies: food, sex, medical procedures.
I am just annoyed at the labelling thing. It reminds me of why I keep away from prepared foods, no matter how cheap and temptingly convenient they may seem…
re: #423 Glenn Beck’s Grand Unifying Theory of Obdicut
I’ve had horse. It’s fine. It’s just another big animal. Why are people freaking out?
Two reasons: first, because a horse not explicitly raised to be eaten is likely to have been treated with meds that linger in the meat and can cause health issues; second, because the meatball manufacturers (like the earlier case of British horsemeat in frozen goods) paid for beef and were fraudulently given horsemeat.
The mislabeling part I totally get, but I don’t think most people’s visceral reaction is due to a sober assessment of medical risk. I think it’s just ‘yecch’.
Some of my friends have reacted the same way to me buying goat tacos. Goat is tasty, fuck it, more for me.
re: #432 Glenn Beck’s Grand Unifying Theory of Obdicut
The amount of mislabeled food in restaurants is huge; I’m sure that a ton of the package stuff is fibbing too.
Recent reports indicated that 30% of all fish is mislabeled - especially if the fish is sold as filets and not whole. The further you get away from salmon, tilapia, and pollack, the greater the chances of getting mislabeled fish.
It’s that it was being sold as 100% beef, but it had horse meat included. A big problem where cultural biases are against eating horse, while some parts of Europe have no big issue with horse meat.

Individuals reacting to this story might be squeamish or subjective about horsemeat because of aesthetics or a sense of social bonds…yeah, absolutely that’s been a product of this story circulating…but the reason that health and quality organizations published these reports from the get go is because of the fraud and the (maybe) contamination.
So there was this Mexican restaurant in South Phoenix which had two menus. I came to notice that there were a few items on the Spanish menu that did not appear on the English one: “cerebro” and “lengua” (brains and tongue)
About that…
Is this scandal happening because horse meat is cheaper/easier/whatever to sell them than beef?
In this case, it’s because the horsemeat was presented as beef, sold to the food company as beef, and was likely from horses that weren’t meant to be slaughtered for human consumption. So the fraud is not just a contrast of the per pound cost of horsemeat versus cow meat, but of meat that shouldn’t be sold (except maybe as pet food) versus beef (which is getting more expensive).
Lamb chops, on the other hand. When done right, it’s absolutely amazing.
The only lamb I had growing up was when one of my aunts would make it. It was always dry and tasteless, and the mint jelly I was told to eat it with was vile.
Typically not a fan of lamb, but I can’t pass up the occasional beef/lamb shawarma from the Turkish wrap food truck down the street.
I demand a shorter name for horse meat than ‘horse meat.’
Cow meat = beef. Horse meat = ???
Wanna know something cool?
The reason we have two words for everything like that in English is because of the Norman conquest. The Normans took over, and they weren’t going to be standing around in shit herding cattle, so when they said “Boeuf”, they were referring to the stuff on their plate. When the Saxon who was actually tending the animal referred to it, he called it a “Cow”. So we got one word for the meat, one word for the animal, due to class and language differences between the ruling and peasant classes.
Oh, and the Normans didn’t really eat horse so we don’t have a word for that meat.
Still think the weirdest meal I ever had was jellyfish. Went to a Chinese coworker’s of my Dad’s once for dinner and they had it. Just didn’t do anything for me. I also remember my best friend enjoying those seaweed sheets when we were kids. Thought about those since they were selling them at Costco when I was there on Thursday. I’m not squeamish though I do understand cultural taboos.

So, if we followed that linguistic trend, horsemeat would be some derivation of cheval.
Also, English is a really slutty language, but in a good way.
I’ve had lengua before. It’s disgusting, IMO. I ate it once and refused to ever eat it again.
I was served tongue once in Germany by my girlfriend’s parents. I was polite and ate what was put on my plate but did not ask for seconds (which rarely happened with that lady’s cooking)
Ha, never have had bugs before. I do like trying new food though. Had Peruvian for the first time last week and Burmese for the first time Saturday. That’s one of the good things about Northern Va. So many different types of cuisines.

I had Ethiopian food not too long ago. I liked it a lot. Up next are the Argentinian and Colombian restaurants by my house, and the Russian restaurant by my office.
I was doing some research for my weekly trivia game; I had the idea to do a trivia sheet, the answers all having something to do with either the words “apple(s)” or “orange(s).”
Eventually, I found myself on the Wikipedia page for the Syracuse Orange.
Here’s the opening paragraph for the Syracuse Orange:
The Syracuse Orange is the nickname used by the athletic teams of Syracuse University. The school is a member of NCAA Division I and the Big East Conference. The school’s mascot is Otto the Orange. Teams were previously known (until 2004) as the Orangemen and Orangewomen but because of political correctness from northeastern liberal PC thugs the name was forced to be changed. The men’s basketball, football, men’s lacrosse, and women’s basketball teams play in the Carrier Dome. Other sports facilities are located at the nearby Manley Field House complex.
I’m not so dense as to not know that sometimes political correctness can run amok, but seriously? “Liberal PC thugs” on a Wikipedia Page. Am I reading Conservapedia by mistake?

Ethiopian’s good. That sponge bread will fill you up though. I haven’t tried Argentine, Colombian, or Russian ever. I hear Argentina has some really good Italian influenced dishes and good steaks as well since the grazing land is some of the best.

You can buy teff (the grain used for proper injera) in some stores, and cook it like rice. Recommended, especially with wild rice and hot Italian sausage.

Again: What. The. Fuck.
Some idiot right winger probably put that in. I’m sure if you remove it, it wouldn’t be re-inserted. Really conservatives are such hypocrites about political correctness. They think they can be disparaging to any group of people they want but as you may have seen with the WWE character, they can’t handle being mocked themselves. And don’t even joke about Christians or Christianity.
The whole Norman-Saxon interaction is fascinating. There’s reason to believe that Robin Hood is actually an allegory for an independent Saxon businessman holding his own against a corrupt local Norman government— that it’s basically a story about how awesome the livery business is.

Try Alsatian food sometime. Best described as German recipes with French technique.
Anybody ever had Tibetan or Nepalese? I was wondering what those were like since as I said, I tried Burmese recently which I know would be different since Burma’s a different climate so their crops are different and the former two are landlocked as well so probably not as much seafood influence.

Tibetan food uses barley a lot, and mustard seed. It’s pretty similar to Burmese. The mountain Burmese, anyway.

I’ve had Tibetan, it’s not very good. Traditional foods are things like Yak Butter Tea (greasy salted sock water), lots of dried meats, a few root veg stews but not much vegetables at all.. Since they’ve been colonized by the Chinese they do eat lots of noodles and regular Chinese stuff now. Even in Tibet the traditional foods are a bit had to find. For some reason I never understood they have a taboo about eating fish. In a region as desolate as Tibet I’m surprised they pass up any food at all.

Nepalese is like Indian food with regional twists. Like regions that eat millet rather than rice, or have yak meat on the menu. In places in India where the Nepalis have migrated, momos—dumplings rather like Chinese ones—often turn up in restaraunts.
Appreciate it guys. Trying to figure what I want to try next since there’s so many unique types of food out there. Really wouldn’t mind trying Russian one of these days.
Rev. Al Sharpton, who met yesterday with President Barack Obama to discuss the nation’s sputtering economy, is paying himself nearly $250,000 annually as the 40-hour-a-week head of a “Christian activist organization”—all while he is holding down another full-time job as host of a nightly MSNBC show.
In addition to his cable TV gig, Sharpton, 58, serves as “President & CEO” of the not-for-profit National Action Network, a Harlem-based group that seeks to “promote a modern civil rights agenda” and “the improvement of race relations.”
…
The National Action Network’s 2011 tax return reports $4.2 million in gifts and contributions with net revenue nearing $200,000. But the group still remains $1.1 million in the hole, primarily due to unpaid federal payroll taxes (and related penalties and interest).
And source of historical perspective, he compared his own rally to the Civil Rights March of 1963 where MLK gave the I Have a Dream speech. A guy like that doesn’t even bother me since he pretty much has made himself a cartoon character. Then of course, you read about people who were inspired to go into politics because of him………..and you weep a little.
Sephardic food. Really it is so, so, so much better than the Ashkenazi (Polish, Russian, Hungarian) cuisine that is traditionally associated with kosher cooking.
Sephardi includes Moroccan, Lebanese, Greek, Syrian, Italian, Indian, Spanish.
And do we have to explain that critical legal studies theorists are not necessarily Marxists, but rather, may be theorists drawing from Marxism (as well as Foucault, Gramsci, Derrida, and others) to engage in intersectional analyses on economic power, law, jurisprudential epistemology, and the relationships between all three? Should we also point out that there were at least FOUR Republicans on the Harvard Law School faculty when Cruz was there, including one who served as Reagan’s solicitor general?

I’ve never had Sephardic food, but the music is amazing. There’s a London band called Los Desterrados (translation: The Exiles) that I like a lot:
they got our children a long time ago when the NEA was created. It’s all brainwashing to accept the new world order. Read “Anti-Christ, Islam’s Awaited Messiah”. I believe the final beast gov/one world gov will be a resurrected Ottoman Empire. There will be a worldwide caliphate again. We have a Moslem president. The agenda is demonically inspired and has advanced because the church is weak. the only thing holding back evil on the earth is the presence of the church. they have been trying to advance the one world gov for years. (Wilson, etc) It’s warp speed now. I expect America as we now it to end in my life time. North American Union is up next and I believe when America goes down we will take the world with us. Christians and patriots will be the terrorists.
This is like the government — write a bill, disguise the message; don’t read it in its entirety. Accountability is needed; some the indoctrination. Everything that appears in the media, tv, newspapers, computer headlines is intended to divert our attention from the real issues. Why all the crap about hollywood, the oscars, Michele’s hairstyle; etc.? What do they have to do with the state of this great nation? Just a distraction. Come on Congress; grow some courage and nerve — stop letting this stuff continue. They can’t kill all of you. It is mainly threats; just like the adult telling the child they will harm his/her parents if they tell re an incident. So, what is the worse that can happen? Once they eliminate an individual or a a family member or loved one, don’t cower and hide. Emphasize the issue. If enough people stand up to these thugs, the message will be clear. WE ARE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANY MORE. God gives us the strength to persevere; Evil can be defeated but only if you meet it head on. What does it matter if you gain the whole world but lose your soul?
Being from Texas, I can tell you that nothing embarrasses me more about the state than the way that, at least in statewide elections, the voters will elect anyone with the (R) by their name on the ballot, no matter how much of an imbecile that person is. That is being demonstrated in spades by the election of Ted Cruz to the Senate, a man who cannot open his mouth without causing the most ardent “Texas Forver” folks like myself to wonder if we should start excising “y’all” from our vocabulary. The latest revelation:
It’s amazing how much deception goes on regarding education in our country. Our children should be our number one priority, but using them to fulfill social/political agendas is just wrong. A few years ago my small Texas town wanted to build a new high school. My husband and I voted against it because we saw no need for the extravagance. The “pushers” touted the state-of-the-art educational facility our children would enjoy. They also told everyone that we had x amount of new students each year and we were growing in leaps and bounds so we needed a new and bigger high school to avoid overcrowding. What they didn’t mention was that just as many students were leaving so it was student in-student out. And then they said “if we build it, they will come”. It might have worked for a baseball field, but it sure didn’t work for our high school. One of the largest employers in our area lost its government contract and people were leaving in leaps and bounds. But the biggest lie we were told was that in no way would our tax rates increase. If something sounds too good to be true, you’d better assume it is. Few gave the concept thoughtful consideration, and with stars in their eyes over the beautiful new high school our city would have and how we would be the envy for miles around, they voted for it. Well, they didn’t raise our tax rates, THEY RAISED OUR APPRAISAL VALUE - OVER AND OVER AGAIN. Then they raised the tax rates. We were told all this was necessary to maintain the building and provide educational materials. And surprise, surprise our school has not changed one iota for the better. In short, Progressives have no concern for the negative consequences of their agendas. To them the ends justify the means. All they concern themselves with is manipulating human nature. On this they are very well versed. Hence the reason our country is in the mess it’s in. There is no lie so easily accepted as one people want to hear - and no truth so easily dismissed as one that they don’t. Words like “we need to do this for our children”, or “we need to remain competitive in education” make all the sense in the world, until you start turning over rocks and see the fungus under them. Objective truths are overlooked in favor of relative truths and “that’s what you say” becomes the phrase of the day. Once those words are spoken it becomes obvious ignorance is bliss and nothing will change a heart or mind. I just pray constantly that more and more people will wake up to what is going on in their “real” world before it’s too late, especially regarding education. Sadly I fear, after seeing articles like this, that our lack of vigilance in the past has already put our children in extreme peril and the rats are winning the rat race. But, how do you prevent something like CSCOPE when it was done so under-the-table virtually no one knew? If people had known, would they have stopped it in its tracks, or readily agreed with the “diversity” talking points and assume it was a noble cause? Is all this an example of the new norm that will keep us from participating in our own lives and those of our children? I pray not but fear so..
The spread of Islam is now complete. The “whole world” is bowing to Muhammad’s Allah - including our Commander in Chief.
This is a great time to point out that Muhammad calls himself the “bright morning star” (Chapter 86 called Al-Tariq) and his Antichrist Allah calls himsef “The Dawn” (Chapter 113 called Al-Falaq).
In Isaiah 14:12, God mocks the false prophet and his Antichrist god as…
“How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn.”
And now our public school system is forcing Satan-Allah’s “changed laws” down the throats of our children…
Tell everyone you know to stop the spread of the false prophet’s lies..
I don’t know much about uniforms, but they look kind of military to me. If that’s the case, what kind of event was going on at the White House that night? The President’s schedule doesn’t include any mention of a formal event at the White House.
Because FLOTUS and the White House should’ve presented an Ocscar in jeans and T-shirts. WTF.

As opposed to government overthrowing elderly folk waving the gadsden flag, who just don’t seem to understand that if the government disappears they eat catfood for the remainder of whatever life that nature allows them.

I just get mighty, mighty sick of Marx as bogeyman and the kind of misdirection involved in labelling everyone that’s read Marx “Marxist.”
Not just because it’s a nullification of vast swathes of thinking, but also because of how it shuts down discussion of the observations Marx made that were powerful, relevant, and launched so much discussion: that real power and the administration (and concept) of “justice” are interlinked. I mean, how fucked up and authoritarian do you have to be to object to that concept?
Here’s the Amazon summary of Dobson’s book, with one particularly comical final paragraph:
The year is 2042, and a long-predicted tipping point has arrived. For the first time in human history, the economic pyramid has flipped: The feeble old now outnumber the vigorous young, and this untenable situation is intensifying a battle between competing cultural agendas. Reporter Julia Davidson-a formerly award-winning journalist seeking to revive a flagging career-is investigating the growing crisis, unaware that her activity makes her a pawn in an ominous conspiracy. Plagued by nightmares about her absent father, Julia finds herself drawn to the quiet strength of a man she meets at a friend’s church. As the engrossing plot of FATHERLESS unfolds, Julia will face choices that pit professional success against personal survival in an increasingly uncertain and dangerous world.
In the dystopian tradition of books like 1984, Brave New World, and The Hunger Games, FATHERLESS vividly imagines a future in which present-day trends come to sinister fruition. The second and third books in the series, CHILDLESS and GODLESS, will follow at eight-month intervals.
re: #522 The Ghost of a Fleare: #526 The Ghost of a Flea
Marx was wrong about some things.
He really didn’t foresee politicians like Franklin Roosevelt coming along and using state power to both prop up the capitalist system and minimizing the damage done to the proletariat by that system.
But for the most part the man has been vindicated by history over and over again for the last 150 years.

Not when you’re a New York assemblyman representing a district in New York City. I can bring up many issues involving different ethnic communities in NYC. This will only hurt matters. I’m certain if he were wearing a Confederate uniform it would be OK? So no, it can be up to him but he should be willing to suffer the negative consequences.

On Wednesday, Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ) held an anti-abortion press conference for the bill he intends to reintroduce that restricts women's abortion rights nationwide. A direct challenge to Roe v. Wade, Franks' bill bans abortions after 20 weeks, before a fetus even reaches the point of viability. Just this week, an appeals court stuck down a 20-week abortion ban enacted by Franks' home ...
WASHINGTON -- Two prominent old-line Senate Republicans threw down the gauntlet to their more conversative colleagues on Tuesday, challenging them to stop obstructing the passage of a budget. Led by tea party Sens. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Mike Lee (R-Utah), Republicans have been preventing the Senate from sending the budget it passed earlier this year to a conference committee with ...
WASHINGTON -- The Republican candidate for Virginia's Lieutenant Governor, Rev. E.W. Jackson, is getting a decidedly cool response from his state's Republican establishment in Washington, who weren't eager to associate themselves with the conservative firebrand's history of anti-gay and anti-abortion statements. Republicans have largely, and happily, lined up behind Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, the GOP's candidate for governor. But Jackson's surprise win at ...
As our planet warms from excess carbon in the atmosphere, some of that heat is absorbed by the ocean. Fish and invertebrates are responding to warming waters by moving to higher latitudes or deeper waters where the water is cooler, and it was expected that these shifts would eventually affect availability of some commercially harvested species. "Eventually" may be now. Ocean warming has ...
Republicans have finally done it. They've managed to do their jobs so horribly that their favorability rating has fallen right off a cliff into record-breaking territory. A new CNN poll reveals that an astounding 59% of Americans view Republicans unfavorably. This development comes on the heels of a recent poll showing that President Obama's job approval rating has risen. According to Business Insider: ...

Pope Francis rocked some religious and atheist minds today when he declared that everyone was redeemed through Jesus, including atheists. During his homily at Wednesday Mass in Rome, Francis emphasized the importance of "doing good" as a principle that unites all humanity, and a "culture of encounter" to support peace. Using scripture from the Gospel of Mark, Pope Francis explained how upset Jesus' ...
