You know I started thinking about what the dynamic is that makes people like this so full of hate…
And it occurred to me that projection is usually a side effect of the internal effort it takes to impose unnatural control on oneself.
If you’re gay and you’re suppressing it, then you hate hate hate gays.
I think what’s being suppressed here is the ability to have any opinion that’s off the list of accepted dogma. You tell a religious nut what opinions God requires them to hold, and at great effort, on pain of absolute self loathing they force themselves to forgo logic and empathy and hold to those opinions.
And the hate hate hate that they have for those who disagree is their internal self loathing for their own ability to reason and feel contrary to dogma.

I’ve noticed the right will sometimes say that even “middle of the road” or “moderate” Democrats are against something or the President. Of course they seem to not back that assertion up with anything. It is like they throw it out there to cast doubt on the left and make it seem as if the policy or idea is so far left that even “moderate” or most Dems are against it.
No wonder so many Conservatives were convinced they would win this last election by a land slide.
Such lousy people these right wing talking heads are. I’m trying not to put down conservatives as a group by calling the people lousy because I believe they are good people being used by people like Tantaros who appeal to their anger and fear as well as their naivete’ and religion.

They just can’t believe that there are people out there who don’t feel the moral panic about sex that they absorbed from their abusive upbringing. They believe that their own neurosis is the very definition of goodness. Therefore there MUST be “moderate” liberals who are as neurotic as they.
They’re kind of right, lots of people think the way they do - though perhaps most of the atheists who think like Baptists call themselves conservatives.

Goodhair practicing to be an action hero.
Earlier today I linked to a story about the Texas legislature approving allowing concealed carry of guns onto campuses. However, that is just the tip of the iceberg of the gun-gasm today:
Saturday special: Texas House votes for easier, wider access to guns
Aptly starting at high noon Saturday, the House passed 13 bills to make guns easier and cheaper to carry in the state, opening the way for concealed handguns on college campuses and in the hands of marshals at elementary schools.
In a sweeping push, the Republican-dominated House also approved a proposal to nullify new federal gun control laws. The law would prompt the Texas attorney general to sue and pursue hefty fines against a police chief, district attorney or any other public official who tried to enforce such laws.
In that Firearms Protection Act, lawmakers ignored constitutional questions to push back against national ruminations on expanded background checks and assault-rifle bans.

Just watched Argo. I remember that caper, but did not know any of the details (which, according to the end scroll, were not declassified until 1997)
I enjoyed the movie too, but it has very little relation to what really happened. (Read the book, if you’re interested.)

Yeah…I call it my mid-life crisis car…my wife made me buy it. I wanted a Civic. But I do like Zed (that’s what we call it). The downside is we have two two seaters (the 350Z and a Smart car) along with our AWD BMW. I want a full-size SUV or a truck…so either the Smart or the Z have to go…tough choice. Wife likes the wagon. I also want a boat. I have lots of wants, but now that it’s salmon season, the boat is back at the top of the list.

They have Z clubs around here. Saw a bunch of them on my last trip to Rocky Mountain National Park. Not sure if that’s current. I rented a Sentra once and that thing had a lot of power. The GTI only needs a new battery every two years. Damn thing has been good to me.

Israel deploys Iron Dome in North amid Syria tensions
The IDF has deployed two Iron Dome batteries to northern cities due to regional tensions following air strikes in Damascus which foreign sources have attributed to the Israel Air Force.
In recent days, one battery has been stationed in Haifa, while another has been placed in Safed, a senior defense source said. The source stressed that “this is not the first time that the systems have been deployed to the North.”

They’re trying to get sympathy from the other Arab states and turn this not into a Syria vs. rebels but Muslims vs. Israel thing. This is the danger of Israel’s strikes, of making the rebels seem aligned with Israel, and making other Muslim states lower their opposition to Assad. I don’t think it’ll work— just as the Muslim states by and large didn’t fall for Saddam’s attack on Israel as broadening the conflict— but it’s a risk.

Agreed, but I must also point out that sometimes risks simply have to be run. Israel determined that Hezbollah having a ready supply of Fatah-110s was an intolerable security threat. Given that level of threat, Israel often needs to undertake unilateral action.

More NYC racial profiling alleged.
“From 2003 through 2011, 87.0 percent of people arrested and charged under § 221.10 for possessing marijuana ‘burning or open to public view’ in New York City were either black or Latino,” the complaint states. “Conversely, only 10.2 percent were white. The disparity is even more acute in the Bronx, where the DCJS records show that 95.4 percent of all persons arrested and charged under §221.10 were either black or Latino. Meanwhile, studies show that between 2002 and 2009, among persons between the ages of 18 and 25, a greater percentage of whites used marijuana than either blacks or Latinos.”
As in the Floyd case, all of the plaintiffs are black and Latino men who claim police racially profiled them because of pressure to meet quotas.
“As a result of this quota system, and the perverse incentives it imposes, some NYPD officers have developed a policy, practice and custom of lying on criminal complaints - including plaintiffs’ - so as to ‘justify’ charging a misdemeanor rather than a violation,” the complaint states.
One stupid side effect of the quota system is that these cases often wind up getting dismissed, because the cops don’t have a quota for convictions, just for arrests.
So it’s an enormous, racist waste of money.

Hezbollah is supplying Assad with troops and some of those troops are trainers for his Alawite militias. Most likely these weapons are intended as a form of payment. They are also likely intended to help members of the Assad regime secure a bolthole, should they need one.

Perhaps it isn’t Assad who is giving them to Hezbollah but Iran. Syria has long been a willing conduit for Iran to arm Hezbolla.

In reply, I’d point out that the offense in question is “possessing marijuana ‘burning or open to public view’”, not just simple possession. I can entirely believe that such an offense is committed for frequently by blacks or Latinos: They are more likely to be poor and less likely to have an indoor area in which to smoke the weed. Moreover, police foot patrols are the heaviest in high-crime areas, which are often areas inhibited by blacks or Latinos.

In the good times, the former mayor of this small, wind-swept village of 5,000 in northern Spain was busy building: the olive oil museum, the wind museum, the museum of life. If that were not enough, there was the new bullring, the sports center with 25,000 seats and the zoo with the exotic-bird park.
The former mayor, María Victoria Pinilla, seemed to be prospering personally, as well. Three stately houses took shape on her family plot. There was an apartment in Madrid, a beach house and a vacation home in the Dominican Republic next to Julio Iglesias’.
Now, however, the fence outside the former mayor’s family compound is in disrepair and half-built housing developments lie abandoned on the outskirts of the village. And last month, Ms. Pinilla, 57, became just one more in a growing throng of political officials in Spain to face corruption charges.
Investigators calculate that she and other family members accumulated about $24 million, mostly from shady land deals during Spain’s boom years. Searching her property, the police had to borrow a bill-counting machine from a local bank to help total up all the cash: $485,000.
For decades, corruption was accepted in Southern Europe as a fact of life, a way to distribute the spoils, and few people — including, in many cases, prosecutors — gave it a second thought. But the grinding economic crisis, which stalled projects and ended the flow of cash, has helped lift the veil on corrupt officials, exposing graft, bribery, payoffs, secret favors and other misdeeds on a scale that few imagined.
Standard Disclaimer: “Chicago-style corruption” is a reference by this author (a life-long Cook County resident who was born and grew up in Chicago) to Chicago’s corrupt political culture. It does not refer to Barack Obama in any way, shape, or form.

I think an outright military conflict is unlikely but Iran’s terrorist proxy groups will act if ordered. Assad’s declaration of war could just mean missile launches from Lebanon, Gaza and now possibly from Sinai. Also bombings and terrorist attacks against Israeli diplomats, tourists and soft targets internationally.

I know other cities have problems, but Chicago’s are legendary, and that was true long before Barack Obama won the Democratic nomination for the Senate in Illinois in 2004.
Further, those other cites are not my city, and Chicago is. I have lived in and around Chicago my whole life, and I do not criticize her corruption because I hate her, as some ruralists do; I criticize because I love her and wish to see her made better.

For starters, it inflates the city’s expenses so much that the city hasn’t been able to hire the number of police it needs. That helps contribute to crime, which is a factor for everyone, even downtown.

Chicago doesn’t have a lock on big cities full of cronyism and political corruption. These days invoking “Chicago-style politics” is a dogwhistle to imply the President is corrupt.
This is not going after you, AMA, but I also want to say that I am angry as well with the damn ruralist wingnuts who took Chicago’s real problems and turned them into a buzzword to stoke their hatred of Barack Obama. Nothing I have ever read has ever suggested to me that Barack Obama has ever engaged in any corrupt activity. But that doesn’t stop the haters, who again ignore real issues in order to wave their guns* in the air and shout slogans. Fuck them.

re: #168 Iwouldprefernotto
Yep. Atlanta Public Schools are going through a huge scandal right now, but the news is also treating this as though Atlanta is the only place in the state that’s dealing with that level of corruption. Umm, no, that is rampant in the suburbs too, but no one will lift a finger to investigate outside of Fulton county. The kids suffer, their education is made effectively useless by such crap and it ends up costing everyone in the long term, not just the kids. We’ve had two counties nearly or completely lose accreditation for a host of reasons, and the blame hilariously gets placed on unions. In GA 5% of teachers are in a union that actually has any bargaining power. The rest belong to an “association of educators” that is really nothing more than a professional club of sorts. Now the whole charter school thing is gaining traction as a solution, and those are proving to be even less effective than the public schools. All because a few people used standardized testing and attached money and perks to good test scores instead of allowing teacher to actually teach and prep kids for life outside of K-12.

A Titan is currently the largest ship in the game. It requires billions of ISK in materials to build, and can only be constructed in 0.0 Security at a POS Capital Construction Array. A Titan requires the combined efforts of hundreds of people to reasonably build. It also requires considerable amounts of dedicated Skill training time just to be able to pilot it, and much more to competently do so.
Translation: In order to build a Titan you’ll have to spend so much time playing this game that the palm of your hand will think you don’t love it anymore.

That’s exactly what they are and what they have become. The GOP is no longer a political party, merely the political arm of the Cult Media. And the purposes of that media are simply to keep rubes angry and sow enough talking points among those who vote GOP out of team loyalty to ensure that there is no meaningful opposition to the wholesale transfer of public wealth into the hands of a very few rich people.

Yep. I never could deal with a 12 step approach, I found a lot of people there were really not focused on recovery so much as finding a substitute for their substance. I’m wording this awkwardly, but some of the people there sort of became addicted to the meetings, if that makes sense. Of course that’s a better choice than the drinking or drugs for them, but I could never get comfortable in those meetings. I needed therapy and was lucky enough to find someone who helped me draw on my strengths so I could get out of the pit I was in.

If supporting Obama and progressive ideas paid more than catering to conspiracy theorists and wingnuts, there wouldn’t be any conservative pundits. I don’t think any of them believe half the shit they sell.
They’re not faking being ignorant, bigoted and stupid though, you should hear what happens when Bill Maher give Ann Coulter the doe eyes and she lets her guard down. She’s the biggest know nothing on the planet!

No. I’ve known a US Army Ranger sniper though; did you have a question about that or is it specific to the book?

The Benghazi “scandal,” at least according to what the GOP’s made of it, seems to amount to “Obama ‘lied’ to the public and so denied us a scandal!”

It’s a long hard course before you get out in the field. There is a certain personality type that is needed as well. The saying is, anyone can use a scope to kill someone once; only snipers can do it again. That’s not literally true, of course, but those who are able to be successful snipers have to separate themselves from the result of their actions in a way that is different from most troops. If the book takes time to discuss the training and the hows and whys it might be interesting. If it’s just a collection of, as it were, “war stories” then not so much.
The concept of caring for your troops is ingrained early and often in the US military’s training of NCO’s & Officers. It’s considered an important aspect of leadership and if you aren’t able to do that, you probably are going to get passed over for promotions and be out of the military quickly.

NRA speaker’s advice: Keep a gun in your child’s room
A home-defense seminar at this weekend’s National Rifle Association convention urged parents to overcome their initial misgivings and store firearms in their childrens’ bedrooms, Think Progress reported on Saturday.
“If you’re worried that your kid is going to try to break into the safe that is in their bedroom with a gun in it, you have bigger problems than home defense,” said speaker Rob Pincus, a former police officer who know heads up his own firearms instruction company, I.C.E. Training. “If you think that the kid who’s going to try to break into the safe because it’s in their room isn’t sneaking into your room to try to break into stuff, you’re naive and you have bigger problems than this.”
If a parent is “in the middle of the house” when their home alarm goes off overnight, Pincus said, and they are going to head for their childrens’ room to defend against an intruder, it made sense to stash a gun in their closet.

One might wonder how the hell these people manage to ever leave their houses if they’re that fucking scared. Seriously, I just can’t relate to this mindset at all and I have been assaulted and had a gun pulled on me before.
Sometimes I wonder how much of this is just posturing, how many of these nutbars actually DO carry guns into the freaking toilet with them because heaven knows what might reach up and bite them on the ass. I’m tired of these morons. I swear, if one more wingnut tells me that the 2nd Amendment protects all the other ones I may end up throwing a chair at someone.

Rob should specify the type of safe he recommends before he gets all smart-alecky.
Tobias began studying the security of gun safes after he was called in to help investigate the death of Ryan Owens, a 3-year-old in Vancouver, Washington, who was shot in 2010 with the service weapon of his father, an undercover police officer.
That weapon had been locked up in an inexpensive safe issued to the officer by the country sheriff’s office. Tobias believes that Ryan or one of his siblings opened the safe and removed the weapon, due to a serious design flaw.
Following that investigation Tobias decided to look into the safety of a wide range of inexpensive gun safes.
The lock experts showed videos in which they opened gun safes costing between $75 to $200, all of which are made in China and sold through retailers including Wal-Mart Stores Inc and Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc.
They were able to open one safe after they gently bounced it on a table by pushing up one corner with a finger. They opened up other safes after sticking paper clips, wires and straws into holes on top of them.

FIL did not carry a gun to the toilet. He kept one there, and in several other rooms of the house. We had to shake the place down when we brought the kids. It was media-induced fear, and he was a combat soldier who saw serious action in 2 wars.

re: #289 Decatur Deb
In your FIL’s case, I can understand it somewhat. He’s dealt with the trauma of combat, and while it’s not cool to stash guns all over the place where the grandkids can get at them, at least his fears are somewhat based on actual experiences. The rest of these yahoos though, the most combat they’ve seen is battling for the next place in line at the Golden Corral buffet line. I wonder how many of the nimrods at the NRA convention this week have ever had so much as a neighbor being a target of burglary. If my experiences in Outer Wingnuttia are any indication, the answer to that is a resounding no.
