Chicago is surreal this weekend. I’m downtown, the weather is wonderful. Taste of Chicago is happening and there are tourists everywhere. There is a large convention also going on, so there are business people everywhere.

I had to go to the next hotel over this am to get a cuppa.

Our little town had its festival yesterday. They hadn’t had it for a few years, apparently, so it was a bit of a big deal. We went down there and it was a German beer festival, complete with Bavarian orchestra. Getting up and down through town was effectively impossible.

Housekeeping just brought a back board for my bed. Life IS MUCH BETTER NOW.

Very Expensive Hotel (even by Chicago Standards) and the mattress is shot. They spent millions redoing the decor and can’t keep the mattresses up-to-date.

I ended-up sleeping crossways in the bed last night.

Now’s a good time for me to post this:

The UAV Collision Myth

July 13, 2013: A recent opinion survey in the United States found that 57 percent of the population favored the use of UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) in general (anywhere in the U.S.), 88 percent favored UAV use for search and rescue, and 63 percent for fighting crime. Many countries outright forbid the use of UAVs for any reason (even military training). But some, like Israel, have allowed their use for decades with no problems. Most civilians instinctively recognize the benefit of UAVs, but the bureaucrats in charge of air safety are very risk averse. They gain nothing by backing UAV use and risk hurting their careers if a UAV collides with a manned aircraft or otherwise hurts people. So many nations follow their cautious air safety bureaucrats and ban the use of UAVs anywhere except in air space reserved for military operations.

This is all about fear trumping reality. For example, air travel has long been much safer than it appeared to be. That paranoia has been extended to UAVs despite no lives lost to UAV collisions in Iraq, Afghanistan, or anywhere else. There is a potential danger with collisions involving large (over 50 kg/110 pound) UAVs, as these can inflict enough damage to bring down manned aircraft. Yet in a decade of heavy use in Iraq and Afghanistan there has been only one such collision and in that incident there was no loss of life. But fear of such collisions has led to heavy restrictions on UAV use in disaster relief operations, which the military is often called upon for overseas and inside the United States. The American military must receive permission from the Secretary of Defense before using UAVs off the battlefield. That’s not really an issue at the moment because most recent disasters the military got involved in there were sufficient manned aircraft to look for survivors, assess damage, and so on. Nevertheless, disaster relief experts point out that in the early hours and days after a major disaster you can’t have too many eyes in the sky.

SNIP

In light of all this, the army is developing a new radar system (GBSAA or Ground-Based Sense And Avoid) to increase safety for UAVs. GBSAA is mainly a software system using existing radars to track UAVs and manned aircraft and alert UAV operators when their UAVs are too close to other aircraft (manned or unmanned). GBSAA can be expanded to use transponders (which commercial aircraft have been using for a long time) and more flexible software. But the basic idea is to insure that UAV operators are no longer “blind” to what is in the air nearby. GBSAA had its first field test a year ago and it was a success. The first GBSAA will be deployed next year.

GBSAA will likely be more in demand by potential civilian UAV users. Battlefields have much lower safety standards than civilian air space, what with all those artillery and mortar shells, plus the bullets and rockets. But civilian air space has a lot of small aircraft and helicopters, so UAVs are generally banned. GBSAA could change that and make battlefields safer as the UAV traffic becomes denser.

Looks like an insect cyborg drone to me. Somebody better tell Snowden to look out for the mosquito drones. //

In 2008, the U.S. Air Force showed off bug-sized spies as “tiny as bumblebees” that would not be detected when flying into buildings to “photograph, record, and even attack insurgents and terrorists.”

Many flying insect drones were developed into prototypes that year, but look again at the fly drone that could fit on the tip of your finger. Gizmo Insider suggested, “We’ve heard of a fly swatter, but what about a marksman trying to shoot down every fly he sees within a 100 yard radius. The future of warfare and intelligence collection just got a whole lot more sophisticated.” That was five years ago, so what insect spy drones exist now that the public doesn’t know about? […]

The article I posted acknowledges in the last paragraph that there’s no such thing (yet) as a mosquito drone, but there’s plenty of fodder for conspiracy theories there.

So the “mosquito” drone is fake, so far as we know, but the Air Force asked for itty bitty drones that could “covertly drop a mysterious and unspecified tracking ‘dust’ onto people, allowing them to be tracked from a distance.” All of this drone tech is meant for military use, but would we really see these if they were deployed in America?

Probably.

I remember reading - maybe it was on World Nut Daily - that there’s something about soy-based products (tofu, etc.) that the author suspected of being a “gay serum”, if you will; allegedly, soy-based products ‘feminize’ men, or so that author claimed.

I’m watching Friday’s Real Time right now, where Snowden was discussed.

Bill Maher pushed back against his entire panel of 2 fairly reasonable Republicans and self-described Christian revolutionary Cornell West who all believe Snowden is a whistleblower, pointing out that he didn’t reveal anything we didn’t already know.

He unfortunately didn’t go so far as to suggest Snowden was engaged in espionage against the United States.

Ooooh, I just remembered something: Taggants are already in existence, so they should be able to be modified for use as “tracking dust” for drones.

Things that could contain tracking dust: pollen, talcum powder, eye shadow… OH SNAP! President Obama is a freaking evil genius! He created all this fear about gun grabbing so people would run out and buy ammo which, unbeknownst to them, contains gunpowder that the government has secretly laced with taggants. It’s only a matter of time till they send out the drones & black helicopters to pinpoint the locations of all Patriots™ and have them interned in FEMA reeducation camps. //

Correction from a couple of threads ago. I was wrong, John Good isn’t the Zimmerman defense witness who contributed financially to his defense fund, that was John Donnely. Both broke sequestration however, Good to consult with the defense VR reenactment creator, and Donnelly sat in the audience and watched other defense witnesses give crucial testimony before taking the stand himself. Donnelly is also the one who flagrantly contradicted his own sworn deposition, in which he said he’d never listened to the 911 tape. In allowing him to swear that it was Zimmerman’s voice he’d heard the judge violated established precedent which said only close family members could make a voice identification.

Perhaps someone can help me here but I was amazed that it was admissible that marijuana was found in Treyvon’s system (from my understanding marijuana stays quite long) but it was inadmissible to bring up Zimmerman’s prior run-ins with the law which included violence. I don’t get that and I guess that’s why I am dumbfounded by those who want to paint Zimmerman as this noble neighborhood watchman who got attacked by a punk.

Exactly and from what I recall that couldn’t be brought into evidence by the prosecution but the fact that pot was in Treyvon Martin’s system could. That confuses me. Pot as I said stays in your system a while. He could have had taken in that marijuana a week before the events transpired.

Oh bullshit. You can only be tossed out for conduct, not for refusing to issue the vote the judge wants.

If the judge wants a not guilty verdict they can just issue a directed judgement, the second they send the issue to deliberation a juror’s vote can’t be second guessed in and of itself.

that’s why I don’t feel bad for him. Zimmerman’s apologists are like “Well you have to feel bad for him, he has to live the rest of his life in fear.”
“Yeah live which is something that Treyvon Martin isn’t able to do because of him.” I am still dumbfounded that this wasn’t at least manslaughter. I am sorry but I could not in any good faith vote to acquit a man who shot someone unarmed. He may not have been a murderer but he did I feel strongly commit a crime that night. Also if Zimmerman had been a black man in the early 20th century, he would have been dead without trial. So yeah my pity for George Zimmerman is shit little. He chose to fire his weapon that night. He didn’t have to do that.

Real moral: Neither deserved to die. To think otherwise is to be an asshole. Yes, Trayvon Martin made some bad decisions in his life, but his sins were those of weakness. He was clearly not an evil person, needing more to find the right path.

The tragic thing is that Trayvon’s parents sent him to Sanford to serve his suspension from school to keep him away from the malign influences in his mother’s neighborhood, and it was in Sanford that he got shot.

Preventing the march from continuing peacefully is a really, really terrible decision. It’s when crowds get blocked in that shit starts to go south. Whether they realize it or not, NYPD leadership is sending the message that they want a fight.

I don’t use my credit card much, but I have to pay a large bill, so had to make some purchases with it for the next few days so I have enough cash on hand till the check clears.

So my bank puts a hold on my card because of the sudden activity, which means it was frozen when I went grocery shopping, which means I had to use my debit card, now my funds are screwed so I barely have enough to cover the check.

THANKS SO FUCKING MUCH.

If you call the CC issuer from the store, they can usually fix that immediately. I only use a single debit card, no credit, and have had to call and get my card re-enabled a couple of times. For some reason ordering from J&R Music World freaks my bank out and they decide someone else is using my account.

Navy Federal. Never had this problem before. The one time I actually got scammed, they didn’t even put a hold on my card. They just contacted me, asked about the charges, then issued me a new card. Its only when I actually needed it that they put a hold on it.

Maybe, but Twitter could at least create a fake quote database, notifying the person trying to tweet the fake quote, and then labeling the tweet as a fake quote if they follow through. If they do it a lot like Prudence, they could label all the person’s tweets as being from someone who constantly misleads people.

No, and saying I’ve got to be kidding is pretty insulting.

Twitter is software based, not humans shuffling cards. Creating the initial list of fake quotes is as simple of scanning David Barton’s books and web posts. Checking tweets against it would be simple.

In addition, they could add a “the contents of this tweet are false” button, and use software to disregard the clicks by crazies at they’re identified. This would be a really fun problem to solve by analyzing hashtag usage and keywords in posts.

Of course it wouldn’t, but it would drive them crazy, trying to tweak known-fake quotes to get their lies past the filter. This could be a TOS violation resulting in account termination and IP block. Some developers could have a huge amount of fun implementing it. Of course it wouldn’t increase profit, just honesty, so they probably wouldn’t care to spend the money on it.

Maybe I’ll make my own Twitter with honesty, blackjack, and hookers.

I’m old and sleepy, so heading off to bed.
But really, what you are suggesting is a HUGE can of worms when it comes to censorship and very real potential for wholesale abuse. Who do you suggest be the keeper of all and sundry “real quotes”?
I don’t think Twitter can afford VB.

There’s a reason I don’t flip the bird when someone cuts me off anymore.

Very smart. Even if the person you flip off doesn’t have a gun, they have a car, which is more dangerous than a handgun.

I once had someone cut me off in traffic and flip me off when I was younger and much more hot-headed, so I ran them off the road and was moving quickly toward their car to break their window and pull them out, when I realized that an astonishingly stupid small woman had just tried to get me to kick her ass. I turned right around and left as soon as I realized I wasn’t dealing with a man. I doubt she ever pulled that stunt again, but I still felt bad about terrifying her even if she was behaving terribly.

Twitter must have a pretty robust back-end already, though I don’t know what they’re using. I don’t like Oracle the company, but I do like the software because it requires more precision in your SQL than MS SQL Server does. It also helps that my Oracle server at work is on much better hardware than my SQL 2005 server.

309 Lidane  Sun, Jul 14, 2013 7:25:53pm

Yeah, this guy simply doesn’t get what just happened here in Texas:

Editorial: Get ready for all those babies

If Texans’ conservative moral values prompt our state to implement one of the nation’s most stringent abortion codes, then we should accept the responsibility for all those babies we will bring into the world. We need to do right by them.

That means both enacting better laws and public programs that protect women and children, make certain no child goes hungry and ensure our young people receive quality education. And don’t dare claim that’s the job of the church, and the state should butt out. The church has demonstrated its unwillingness to rise to the occasion, and the enormity of the task is about to multiply.

Totally oblivious and naive. If he thinks the same Texas GOP assholes who forced that heinous new law on this state would go along with any of his suggestions, he’s an idiot.

re: #309 Lidane

This is my particular gripe about churches in Texas: they’ve completely fallen down on the job of encouraging their members to adopt not just the cute healthy white infants, but all the older kids waiting in the system to be adopted.

Adoption. Streamline laws and practices to make Texas adoptions simple and inexpensive. A mother who carries her baby to term should know without a doubt that child can be placed in a loving “forever” family who will treasure and nurture it as their own.

Churches can support this by creating a culture of adoption—adoption as ministry—that provides a ready and willing supply of families who receive children. baptiststandard.com

Yes. Yes he did.

And US adoption laws suck. We went to Vietnam because the risk of having a child stolen from us years later was too great. I am grateful that we did do that - I’d not trade my boy for anyone else - but why do our laws have to make it nearly impossible to adopt locally?

I know what you mean. I was married for seven years before I got pregnant.
When my husband and I thought we were unable to conceive, we started looking into adopting. After doing some research, we were uncomfortable with the idea of open adoption, and set our sights on the Carribbean.
