Is the NSA Out of Control? What Does the Data Say?

It says no
US News • Views: 21,550

A great article by David Gerwitz with some much-needed perspective on what the numbers really tell us about NSA surveillance: Data-Driven Analysis Debunks Claims That NSA Is Out of Control (Special Report).

Let’s start with a basic problem. Big numbers are hard for people to visualize. Really, really, really big numbers are impossible to visualize.

The gotcha that comes out of this cognitive limitation is that it’s possible to distort public perception by tossing out big-sounding numbers. Even if an attempt is made to put those numbers in perspective, most readers grab the most savory bit of information, usually from the headline, and that’s what becomes their internal representation of the facts.

So let me summarize the results of my data-driven investigation, and then take you through the details. Here is a summary of the results of my analysis:

  • Facebook captures 20 times more data per day (for just its server logs, not counting everyone’s posts) than the NSA captures in total.
  • The NSA’s selection systems are actually insanely accurate. If you compared all the data they capture to a year’s worth of time, the amount of errors they make amounts to about a quarter of a millisecond.
  • The actual byte quantity of erroneous data the NSA records amounts to less than one MP3 track per week.
  • If these numbers were reported in a corporate situation, they would be considered an absolute triumph of big data management and implementation.

So, there you go. Headlines hyper-inflate the facts. Now let me take you through all the details.

Emoprog dudebros won’t let a little thing like cold, hard facts get in the way of wailing like banshees in faux outrage.

The only scandal here is that people keep taking Greenwald seriously.

Failures are nonzero. Failures will always be nonzero. When most documented failures are boring and trivial, either ZOMG THE ENTIRE ORGANIZATION IS COMPLICIT (which makes you wonder if Feinstein is smokin’ something funny) or things are operating mostly properly.

Yet another frustrating distraction from a very relevant and important and sensible discussion of privacy and overreach and whatnot, because Teh GG is a Sovereign World Citizen and/or can’t fucking resist getting pageviews.

The real disappointment is so many I respected have completely lost their shit on this subject. It takes so much work to wade through the ideology and get to some objective ground.

Most of these people have an ax to grind and they’ve been chomping at the bit to latch onto something, anything to confirm their suspicions that the government is violating them in some manner. Right wing authority would have nipped this in the bud ruthlessly and squashed this from the start. The government never gets credit for the billions of services that are successful and/or gets the job done.

One of my favorite Miguelito Valdes tunes is his late recording of El Limpiabotas.

An older recording:

Later on in life a superior studio recording:

That latter recording, btw, is a good tune for all those salsa dancers who want to be “on two” types because, unlike so much music played and pushed as “on two” music, that late recording of El Limpiabotas does call for “breaking on 2”, like the older mambo music.

Technically, not all of it isn’t a secret, at least a lot of the particulars.

This must be what GG meant by getting revenge against the UK. Nothing on his twitter line about any legal action. But interesting that The Guardian is a back player in this (“supportive”) since there’s no way that Miranda could conceivably be considered employed by them, and they know it. Wonder if they’ll wash their hands of GG soon to salvage their reputation and more importantly, avoid legal action themselves?

re: #19 Decatur Deb

Well, there’s a reason Snowden, Poitras and Greenwald are all out of the country now—it makes any legal action against them by the US very, very complicated.

Travel for any of them may be out of the question, and staying in place may not be as safe as they imagine, depending on which country in which they choose to live. They have, in essence, become persona non grata, esp in the US and UK, and depending upon which country they choose in which to travel and live. There’s virtually nothing in international law which either protects or prosecutes them as non-diplomatic actors.

re: #24 Justanotherhuman

As far as Greenwald goes, his original reason for leaving the country was in protest because it was not legal for him and Miranda to get married here. OK, I can get that, it sucks and it’s wrong.

There also seem to be other reasons though, like a fairly large (to me at least) bit of back taxes owed and perhaps other legalities. I think the marriage thing is a ruse as to why he’s not living here, which I would not think if the man wasn’t a self serving liar. I also wonder if the Snowden thing is the first bit of shit he’s up to his eyeballs in or if there are other things of a similar nature that no one’s spotted yet. He also doesn’t seem to be the least bit concerned about the civil rights of the people in Brazil, which is odd, considering that’s been his home for some time now and that Mr Miranda is from there.

When someone lies to me, I think it’s because they think I’m too stupid to figure out the truth on my own. It pisses me off and I won’t then think you haven’t got other skeletons just waiting to fly out of what’s most likely a really big closet. Greenwald think’s he’s infallible and too clever for the rest of us, I just don’t think the Snowden mess is the whole story with the guy, call it a woman’s intuition thing.

Fun stuff. And temp tables sometimes generate really bizarre error codes when they don’t work right. Plus you get to play with tables essentially crossing themselves - just don’t blow up the universe!*

Quite a ruse, considering they haven’t opted to get married yet. No formal ceremony or license that I’ve heard about (wouldn’t you think GG would have twittered or blogged about that?). His issues with taxes and judgments (liens) in lawsuits here have a great deal to do with why he left the country. This report, called a “hit piece” by those who admire GG, even though it pulls the info from public records, shows that one particular case was “settled” in 2004 and he blames a lot of what went on on both the 2 men he was working with in the porn business. It’s typical “poor pitiful me—I was duped” GG: nydailynews.com

O_o

Though we do allow that to some extent given the circumstances. Read-only against Production, and just for tables that are not properly supported/updated in DEV.

How far apart are your DEV and PRD dbs? For us there is a considerable lag risk added since the two databases are in separate data centers a few hundred miles apart and not on the same LAN, much less being in fairly close physical proximity.

So, Sirota is calling on any criminal to flee the country, rather than stay in the States. Maybe that’s why Greenwald’s really staying in Brazil - it’s not just that he was waiting for gay marriage to become legal; he’s got outstanding tax liens with both NYS and the IRS.

NYS has a tax lien lookup, and anyone can look up the tax information on anyone, including Greenwald (want to see it yourself, just plug in his name and then click on the link provided there). That plus the IRS tally, and there’s reason enough to want to stay away.

But he fancies himself as bigger and over the government. He’s the decider who knows best what national security should be and how information should be released/uncontrolled.

The fun thing about legal proceedings by blowhards is that they require discovery. You claim information was damaged/destroyed - you’re going to have to inventory what was on there. And you will get more than what you bargained for.

But this is Greenwald’s attempt at lawfare against the UK, where the legal rules and civil protections are quite different than here in the US (or Brazil for that matter). Press protections in the UK are a wee bit different too. And The Guardian knows this better than Greenwald.

Heh. And in an amoral government the calculus is done constantly between not caring, being discreet, and openly eliminating them. The latter showing that the government is truly not to be messed with.

The old USSR had a clear policy on hostage-takers. The hostages would probably die, but the USSR was also going to eliminate the kidnappers. IIRC, their diplomats were generally left alone in the Middle East after the first few events.

75 piratedan  Tue, Aug 20, 2013 7:13:32am

what I still want to see is a timeline…. when did Snowden take the contract gig, when did he contact GG, when did he contact the WaPo, when did he do the illegal download, when did GG send his first tweet, when did the story get published and where was the snowman at that time. what did the first GG tweet say and what was claimed and how that stacks up now with what is being said and claimed. what data has been revealed and how does that compare with what has been claimed. I can’t shake the feeling that this is just being orchestrated from behind the curtain by someone, somewhere who has incredibly bad dramatic pacing. I still get the feeling that Snowden has been someones tool and has played GG and the “professional left” (or perhaps the “libertarian left” is a better label) to stand in when the RWNJ had finally exhausted themselves with these faux scandals to continually put the President on the defensive. I still suspect that a whole bunch of the histrionics is a simple cover for a bit of espionage performed for a bit of cash and notoriety. The remainder is simply playing the players for who they are.

This is odd—sending the reporting back to America?

• He said he was willing to destroy a copy of the Snowden material at the Guardian’s office in London because other copies were available abroad.

It was quite explicit. We had to destroy it or give it back to them. What they wanted for us to give it back to them. I explained that there were other copies, not within the UK, and I did not really see the point of destroying one copy. But because we had other copies I was happy to destroy a copy in London.

Officials threatened legal action if the Guardian did not destroy the material. Rusbridger said he could have resisted in the courts, but that this could have taken up to a year and that during this time the Guardian would not have been allowed to write about this material. Instead, he decided to transfer the reporting to America, he said.

“Musharraf indicted for murder of Benazir Bhutto”

Top News: This morning, a Pakistani court indicted seven people for their role in the 2007 assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. Among those accused is Pakistan’s former army chief and president, Pervez Musharraf, who was in power at the time of Bhutto’s death.

Musharraf’s lawyer, Afsha Adil, was defiant as she responded to the charges. “The important thing is this: You will have to prove the allegations with evidence,” she told reporters Tuesday. “And still there is no evidence on record…. These are all fabricated cases.” The indictment comes in advance of the publication of a book by Heraldo Muñoz, the Chilean diplomat who led the U.N. investigation of Bhutto’s death, which casts serious doubts on the previous narrative that Bhutto was killed by the Pakistani Taliban. Muñoz suspects Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence played a role and then may have covered up evidence after, though he notes in an excerpt published yesterday that “We will probably never know with full certainty who killed Bhutto. The list of people and groups that considered Bhutto a hated enemy is long.”

Plans within plans, a member within the Israeli Knesset, or even the Cabinet might think that any kind of peace deal can’t work without Egyptian consent/assent, but that doesn’t mean that the Israelis can’t talk with the Palestinians regardless of what happens in Egypt.

I’m not particularly optimistic about the talks in any event - the Palestinians are hardly unified in all this - Hamas and Fatah are barely on speaking terms, and Hamas gains more from the unrest in Egypt than Fatah.

But that the official making these claims hasn’t been identified suggests that he’s in the minority position, or isn’t particularly influential.

What is frustrating me the most is the lack of demand for evidence. We are supposed to be the reality based community, but I am seeing endless twitters breathlessly passing along the latest conspiracy rumor as Proven. Fact!

I am naturally skeptical of government and the surveillance apparatus. Just show me that the NSA is listening in on Americans’ conversations or pulling data without warrants. Or even make the case that while they are within the law, the law is too broad and should be changed.

I am naturally inclined to believe that customs officials are officious dicks who overstep their power. Just show me that they did this time and I will be on your side.

But these flat out conclusory statements that I am supposed to believe because they are asserted really loud just don’t do it for me. Especially when someone does show some evidence they usually start to fall apart.

I am also puzzled by the idea that the U.S. shouldn’t do surveillance at all or keep their methods classified. Yeah the “war on terror” has been used to excuse many excesses in the past and needs careful watching. But there really are terrorist groups out there who want to blow up large numbers of Americans. Are we really not supposed to try to catch them before they succeed? I doubt that it is a happy coincidence that there have been no large-scale attacks within our borders for some time. I think that law enforcements methods - surveillance, infiltrating groups, stopping suspicious people at the border, searching for bomb-making materials - have been used to interrupt a number of attempts.

Perhaps Glenn Greenwald might make that his next leak: Top Ten plot against America stopped by the NSA and law enforcement! Ha, ha; yeah right.

Which sums up the RWNJ’s and the GOP perfectly. A good portion of this country lost their goddamn minds when Barack Obama got elected in 2008, and they seemingly had a total break with reality when he won again in 2012.

How can anyone think that he’s going to defund his own health care plan? Or that he’s going to keep playing nice with all the repeated GOP fail? He doesn’t have to run for office again. The midterms are next year. He’s in a perfect position to hang government shutdowns and gridlock on the GOP for the next three years.

It wouldn’t do any good though. Remember the kind of people we’re dealing with here: They have absolutely no problem with a theocracy that enforces religious dogma as law. In fact, that’s their desired end goal. They just have a problem with it being the wrong religion which does so. Here in my neck of the woods, we only have two kebab shops, one downtown that mostly exists to serve the hordes of drunks on Stodolní Street (a street of endless bars, cafes, and bordellos) and another not too far away from me, that basically serves the neighborhood. Most of the kebab stands/shops here in the Czech Republic are owned and operated by Turks, and typically, it’s Döner Kebab.

It is all halal, however; you’ll see the word ‘halal’ written in Arabic, frequently on the restaurant or the stands’ signage. It looks like this: حلال‎

In Germany or here in the Czech Republic, I’ve yet to encounter a non-halal kebab operation.

Once again, current events in this century remind me of events from the beginning of the last. Spy agencies and rivals battling behind the scenes. Terrorism. Upheaval and regimes and ways of life torn asunder. Idealists turned terrorists. Idealists that were dupes or duped. And governments trying to make sense of it all while protecting their own interests.

In the Czech Republic, it’s not that radically different. It’s quite legal to drink in public here, and no one uses the brown bag approach either.

When I first came here back in 2001, it was during the summer, so it was warm. I thought, “I’ll get a cold beer” at the local convenience store. Took it up to the counter, paid my 12 Kč for it (about 62 cents for a half liter bottle) and was expecting the cashier to put it in a bag or something.

Instead, she opened it and said, “Nazdravi” - “To your health” - and out I walked with an open bottle of beer in my hand. No brown bag, nothing. I was thinking to myself, “Damn……I hope there’s no cops around” and of course, a beat cop turned the corner. He walked by me, doing nothing, so I thought I’d ask him. Most cops in Prague speak English, so I asked him if it was legal to walk down the street drinking a beer. “Of course!” he said. Then he figured out, “Ah….you must be from America”!

It’s shocking to learn that I don’t like it when individuals who have no right to make decisions to undermine national security and reveal classified information, let alone the access to that information, are seen and should be treated as criminals by the very governments whose information was taken and released.

Or that I approve of criminal prosecutions of these individuals.

But it’s hilarious to further see Snowden (or Greenwald’s) fans think that he’s on the same level as the Founding Fathers. Well, not exactly hilarious. Definitely seems that they want revolutionary treatment of national security and information and overthrowing the current paradigm of how governments operate. Also truly delusional if they think that this will achieve those goals, or that the government (any government) will stand idly by and let this happen.

Definitely seems that they want revolutionary treatment of national security and information and overthrowing the current paradigm of how governments operate. Also truly delusional if they think that this will achieve those goals, or that the government (any government) will stand idly by and let this happen.

They’re exactly why I am glad I traded in youthful teenage idealism for mid 20’s pragmatism. I’d be somewhat sympathetic I concede if they had actual solutions but they don’t and they just bitch and bitch. Whether GG, Snowden, etc want to admit it or not, the US has every right to be concerned about terrorist plots and to be vigilant to prevent a second 9/11 from happening.

Just about everywhere I’ve been in the world there’s a Turkish kebab place to be found, and usually a good good source of decent cheap food (and often beer too, outside dry countries, despite the حلال‎ness of the meat)

Kebabs have got an image problem in the UK as the preferred food of the inebriated at pub-chucking-out time - but now I’m hungry for Lahmacun and a cold Efes
- which reminds me, we spotted a Turkish cafe not far from the house which I’d not known of before ‘cos it’s a route we don’t normally use - just checked TripAdvisor and it gets great reviews so a visit is in order…

Death of father and son in TN due to explosion and fire resulting from the accidental discharge of AR-15.

WBBJ-TV reported on Monday that Tennessee State Bomb and Arson Investigators, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and Henderson County Sheriff’s Department were all looking into the Sunday deaths 48-year-old Terry York and his son, Luke.

According to family members, York’s AR-15 rifle accidentally discharged while he was in a back room of their home showing it off to some friends. The discharge ignited a small fire, which “did not seem too threatening at first,” they told WBBJ-TV. The blaze apparently grew out of control after Luke entered the room to help his father put out fire.

That’s when witnesses started hearing explosions.

“It was just like one right after another,” neighbor Kathleen Glass recalled. “One explosion right after another. I just don’t have the words for it because I can not imagine having to go through something like this.”

The family said that York stored a lot of ammunition in the room where the fire started, but officials insisted that they would conduct a full investigation before coming to any conclusions.

“Any loss of life is tragic, when a child looses their life it hit the community hard,” Henderson County Sheriff Brian Duke explained. “There was maybe an accidental discharge of the weapon from there we haven’t really determined how the fire started but that is what State Bomb and Arson officials are looking into.”

UK: Greenwald’s partner David Miranda had ‘highly sensitive stolen information that would help terrorism’

Amid calls from across the political spectrum for a fuller explanation of the treatment of Miranda at Heathrow after a detailed statement from the White House, the Home Office made clear that his nine-hour detention was fully justified on the grounds that he was carrying leaked documents.

A Home Office spokesperson said: “The government and the police have a duty to protect the public and our national security. If the police believe that an individual is in possession of highly sensitive stolen information that would help terrorism, then they should act and the law provides them with a framework to do that. Those who oppose this sort of action need to think about what they are condoning. This is an ongoing police inquiry so will not comment on the specifics.”

The statement by the Home Office, including a challenge to critics to think about condoning the leaking of sensitive documents, marks a significant change in tone by the government.

Downing Street and the Home Office had declined to answer questions about the detention of Miranda on the grounds that it was an operational police matter.

But in the face of growing criticism across the political spectrum, the Home Office has decided to go on the offensive and offer wholehearted support for the police with some details of the operation that led to the detention of Miranda.

How Crayon Drawings Can Tell If There Are Demons In Your Brain

Mungadze claims that based on the colored pencil or crayon a person chooses to color in a picture of a brain, he can tell if they are gay or straight.

He took his “science” to televangelist Benny Hinn’s show This Is Your Day earlier this week, where he also revealed that he can tell if someone is possessed by demons if they choose darker colors on their brain map.

“Everything that I talk about is based on numbers, is based on studies, which is what you do is when you’re a scientist,” he told Hinn, adding that “you can actually see demonization in people’s brains.”

“There’s a certain color that I won’t mention that tells me if someone is demonized,” Mungadze continued, until he ultimately revealed that dark colors such as black, brown and gray are proof of demonic possession.

“I can be in a room with people who are into the occult who are steeped in demonology, I may not know it just by sitting next to them but I let them do that and I can tell what spirit they have,” Mungadze said. “People that come from the occult, people coming from witchcraft usually [choose] blacks and browns and grays.”
