Gingrich Now Blames MSNBC for Right Wing Backlash Over Mandela

The walk-back
Wingnuts • Views: 24,084

Remember when Newt Gingrich pretended to be “surprised” by the deluge of vicious, hateful right wing comments responding to his praise of Nelson Mandela?

Well, that was yesterday. Today he’s come up with a way to blame it all on liberals, specifically those dirty liberals at MSNBC, who (according to Gingrich) used Mandela’s death as an excuse to “attack” Ronald Reagan.

Former Speaker of the House and co-host of CNN’s Crossfire Newt Gingrich appeared on New Day Monday morning to discuss conservative backlash toward his praise of late civil rights icon Nelson Mandela, and changed his tune from the explanation he offered Candy Crowley over the weekend. While citing a misunderstanding of Mandela’s legacy, Gingrich also blamed “elements of the left, particularly on one news channel, who went overboard in trying to use this in a chance to attack Ronald Reagan.”

Of course, Ronald Reagan did oppose sanctions against the South African apartheid regime (in fact, he removed the sanctions put in place by the Carter administration), he did denounce Mandela, he did approve a billion dollar IMF loan to the Botha government, and he did sell them arms (that were used in Botha’s brutal crackdown on the black population).

Pointing out historical facts is not an “attack” or a “smear,” unless you’re Newt Gingrich and you need a way to walk back your criticisms of the deranged right wing base and blame it on the usual suspect: the “left wing media.”

Here’s TP’s article on some of the more unpleasant of Mandela’s attributes including his alliances with Arafat, Q’Daffy, Castro, etc

Why lie about something so easily checkable? The article is not on some of the more unpleasant attributes, but a variety of attributes not often talked about.

Do you really think that calling out racism in America, being a die-hard supporter of labor unions, blasting US imperialism, or calling freedom from poverty a human right are ‘unpleasant attributes’?

There is one item on that list, one out of six, that is about his association with enemies of the US, and yet you represent the article as though it’s entirely about that.

Is this like the Hitches speech about government censorship that you claimed wasn’t about government censorship because of one sentence? That whatever Killgore thinks is most important about the article is what it’s really about?

Such an easily checkable lie, it’s really, really fucking weird that you’d try that.

3) mao, castro, che, stalin are all our heroes because they would jail us all
4) love and worship government (big gummint) especially hippies who are actually dying to have their reefer outlawed, women who want government to tell them when they can and can’t have children, and victims of consumer fraud who are dying for liability limits aka tort reform
5) eat nothing but tofu and designer coffee and save the whales posters and hate hamburgers and beer

To be clear, this data only reflects developed countries; it tells us nothing about how children in the United States or Europe compare to, for example, children in sub-Saharan Africa. But looking at how developed economies compare can help give us a rough approximation of how these countries are doing at child welfare. And UNICEF is using its own “poverty line” here; the more typical international definition is a family that lives on less than $1.25 or $2 per day. Almost no Americans qualify for this definition. Internally, the United States defines the poverty line as a family living on less than about $22,000 per year, which includes about 15 percent of Americans.

Tech giants call on US to reform surveillance laws in wake of Edward Snowden NSA leaks

Eight leading US-based technology companies have called on the US government to overhaul surveillance laws following the revelations of online eavesdropping from fugitive US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden.

Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Twitter, Yahoo, AOL and LinkedIn wrote an open letter to president Barack Obama and the US Congress calling on the US to lead the way in a worldwide reform of state-sponsored spying.

“We understand that governments have a duty to protect their citizens. But this summer’s revelations highlighted the urgent need to reform government surveillance practices worldwide,” the letter said.

“The balance in many countries has tipped too far in favour of the state and away from the rights of the individual - rights that are enshrined in our Constitution.

The only issue that I have with this is the way that they are defining poverty.

A new report by the United Nations Children’s Fund, on the well-being of children in 35 developed nations, turned up some alarming statistics about child poverty. More than one in five American children fall below a relative poverty line, which UNICEF defines as living in a household that earns less than half of the national median.

Since the US has by far the greatest concentration of money on the planet, the per-person median is also seriously skewed. The last reported figure for the US was over $50,000 per household (down a few thousand from the highpoint in 2000).
This report is more an indictment of income inequity than true poverty numbers, since it is only reporting on developed nations. A much fairer comparison would have been to use the actual median dollars versus comparing to an average that would by design tilt against richer nations.

I’m not disagreeing with their findings, per se, just I have issue with how they arrived at those numbers.

His first step has been to take the remaining documents, which exceed 10,000 in number, and start a new media enterprise with Poitras and investigative journalist Jeremy Scahill, funded by a $250 million investment from tech billionaire Pierre Omidyar, the founder of eBay - who came to Greenwald specifically because of the Snowden leaks.” (my emphasis)

Jesusfuckingchrist. Hardly “sexual assault”. Lots of people were kissing, dancing, hugging total strangers—that horrible war was over! Does it mean that people who kiss perfect strangers on New Years are “sexually assaulting” each other? I guess I’m guilty of it, too.

In spite of the headline and legend, Greta Friedman wasn’t a nurse, she was a dental asst, on break, as she said. She didn’t seem very upset in this interview of her and George Mendonsa, who incidentally has been married for 67 yrs to his date, Rita Petrie, seen over his back in the photo.

He is comparing apples & oranges:

Like other large employers, the government pays a large share of the cost of coverage. On average, the government pays 72 percent of the premiums for its workers, up to a maximum of 75 percent depending on the policy chosen. For example, the popular Blue Cross and Blue Shield standard fee-for-service family plan carries a total premium of $1,327.80 per month, of which the beneficiary pays $430.04. Washington, D.C.-based employees who prefer an HMO option might choose the Kaiser standard family plan. It carries a total premium of $825.15 per month, of which the employee pays only $206.29.

In addition, members of Congress also qualify for some medical benefits that ordinary federal workers do not. They (but not their families) are eligible to receive limited medical services from the Office of the Attending Physician of the U.S. Capitol, after payment of an annual fee ($491 in 2007). But services don’t include surgery, dental care or eyeglasses, and any prescriptions must be filled at the member’s expense.

House and Senate members (but not their families) also are eligible to receive care at military hospitals. For outpatient care, there is no charge at the Washington, D.C., area hospitals (Walter Reed Army Medical Center and National Naval Medical Center). Inpatient care is billed at rates set by the Department of Defense.

Does he even qualify for the subsidies at his salary? WTF.

He’s not referring to a subsidy as you and I understand the term, he’s using that word to refer to the employer contribution made by the federal government that has always existed. The very same contribution he was receiving before and took. His refusal to continue taking this federal contribution is probably the only real reason his costs out of pocket are rising. There’s no way in hell that the total cost of the cadillac plan members of congress were receiving before came out to $200 for a 58 year old fuck from South Carolina.

The entire line on subsidies is a lie, they’ve grown so desperate that they attempted to fuck over themselves and their own staff members with the Vitter amendment. And when that failed they’re now recasting the same employer contribution they were receiving before as a wasteful “subsidy” that they will now forgo in order to look like martyrs to fictional ACA caused increases to healthcare costs.

re: #248 b_sharp

He doesn’t have to purchase that insurance on his own. It’s offered through his employment, and if he turns it down, then he’s going to suffer the loss of any subsidy he might be eligible for. The poverty level for one person is $11,490/yr. He makes 16 times that, but I think they’re a bit higher for purposes of ACA. IIRC, the “poverty level” for one person for ACA is $16K/yr, but that’s from memory.

Poverty level amounts have risen to show increases in the cost of living for essentials, like rent, utilities, etc. AK and HI are higher because of their locations.

I used to separate mine by color so that I would take more time in eating them. Left to my own devices, I can - and have - eaten a 1lb bag of M&Ms in a single night. So, I used to get one of the little packages, pour it out on the table, separate them by colors, and eat each color in more or less random order. Otherwise, I’d just tip the thing into my mouth and eat them all in about 3 bites.

Somebody saw me doing this and asked if I had OCD. I don’t think they believed me when I said no.

I do have mild OCD. Things like repeatedly counting steps on stairs. Checking to see if the door is locked several times. While I’m on antidepressants I don’t, but just a few days off and I start up again.

I’m a real frikken mess. I’m lucky I can tie my shoes. tie my shoes.

My high school as I remember it

They tore down my High School somewhere back in the 1990s. Not sure why. It was mostly new in the early 1960s, part of the big school building craze.

When I saw the empty site, I was pole-axed. All those memories, gone. The locker room where Coach Emanuel hung pithy quotes from Vince Lombardi; the pay phone that you could shout into and your parents could hear your tiny voice saying “Come pick me up!”; Mrs. Culp’s classroom, with two-step dais she used to sit on wearing very short skirts; the glass door Roxey Johnson nearly walked through; the Cafeteria where they held the Prom my senior year; the classroom where I tortured Herr Hawbaker mercilessly and he accepted it, along with everyone cheating off my paper during vocab quizzes; the chemistry lab where Mr. Hibbs nearly succeeded in gassing all of us with ammonia and chlorine gases.

All gone. I had a sad.

Hey Gang,

Got a problem. I’ve got a mouse somewhere in my house. I know because I can hear him rustling around behind my desk. I’ve spoken to the cats about this and they tell me that it’s not in their work contract to deal with mice. They said that if I bring it up again they are going to the shop foreman and then filing a complaint with NLRB.

Question for you, when did cats unionize? I figured they were more the ‘independent contractor’ type?

Not a chance.

Senators make $185K/yr. That’s a pretty good living for single guy in a low-cost-of-living state.

Lindsey is confusing an ACA premium tax break, which he would not qualify for, with his Federal Employee Health Benefits program for which, like me, he does. The FEHB is the equivalent of a large private employer kicking in a big share of the employee health insurance package from the workplace. The fine Senator is deliberately or accidentally blurring that line.

M & M rules, Smarties drool.

Just look at the specs.

Smarties are oblate spheroids with a minor axis of about 5 mm (0.2 in) and a major axis of about 15 mm (0.6 in).

Who the hell would want to eat something with those dimensions?

Meanwhile, M & M’s have an average volume of .636 cubic centimeters and are M&M size.

Lol, morons.

Chapman’s scheme involved clients handing over stocks as collateral for loans from his company, Alexander Capital Markets. If the stocks did well, customers were supposed to repay Chapman with interest and would then get the stocks back at their increased value. But court papers say Chapman sold the stocks and had no way to repay clients if their stocks did well

Be well..I have never..Nor will ever watch hockey..Not once in my life have I ever watched hockey. ( Sure, I’ve seen the USSR vs. USA highlight reel.. Do you believe in miracles? ..Never watched the game ..Never will ) LOL.
When Hockey is on Sportscenter I get to watch the Big Bang Theory or the Food Channel.

Hoops…

I never watched or cared about hockey until Columbus got the Blue Jackets. Went to a few games live at Nationwide Arena and was hooked. I come to realize the guys are great athletes. When you see them going hell bent on those skates and hitting each other with even more force than football players due to speed on skates and planting each other into the glass it gives you an appreciation. Then you consider, like the Jackets this week, they sometimes play 3 games a week and 80 some a year, it just impressed the hell out of me in a “how the hell do they do it” way. I don’t like the fighting, but some die-hard fans explained why it is still around. But I do give them high points for athleticism. They have moved past NFL players in my tough guy ratings.

You do not see any overweight hockey players. And they go and sit in a tub of ice after a game to be able to move the next day! Amazing.

By the way…with a nick’ like Hoosier Hoops, I would imagine you watch some BBall. Notice that Ohio State, Wisconsin and Michigan State are ranked 3, 4, 5 in the AP rankings? Ohio State is good, but I would have never guessed they’d move up this fast. Looks like it is gonna be a great year of college ball.

Shocka. Zimmerman’s gf wants charges dropped against Zimmerman.

George Zimmerman’s defense lawyer has asked a judge to allow him to see his girlfriend, who has recanted the domestic violence allegations which led to his arrest last month, new court documents show.

The apparent about-face by Zimmerman’s girlfriend, Samantha Scheibe, throws his latest criminal case into doubt, leaving prosecutors to reassess whether or not to pursue charges.

“I want to be with George,” Scheibe says in a sworn statement which accompanies a new motion.

Here’s TP’s article on some of the more unpleasant of Mandela’s attributes including his alliances with Arafat, Q’Daffy, Castro, etc

thinkprogress.org

Reader’s comments seem to think these are positive attributes

His friendship with Castro, Arafat, and Gaddafi was based on the fact that they helped him during his struggle against Apartheid. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Mandela maintaining his friendship with those who helped him when he and Black South Africans needed them most. Especially since most Western nations either helped the Apartheid government outright or were passive.

I appreciate Castro’s support of liberation movements throughout Africa and have never thought of him as the monster that some Americans try to portray him.

re: #390 Backwoods_Sleuth

I can empathize. My high school, which was founded in St. Paul, MN in I believe 1851 was one of the(if not the oldest) Catholic girls’ schools in the state. In the late 1800’s the wealthy, prominent young women of St. Paul attended the school (including the future wife of railroad magnate James J Hill). The school, which was housed in a beautiful Victorian structure (complete with a parlor and stuffed couches) still stands in a gentrified neighborhood close to the Capitol building and the Cathedral. The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondolet, who ran the school, use the structure today to support their community service programs. So while I officially don’t have a “school”, the alumnae association is active and I know good work is continuing. And though I am no longer a practicing Catholic, I have many fond memories of the nuns, lay teachers and my class mates.

This should be interesting.

It turns out Steve works for Steve.

In a report published on Sunday, The Houston Chronicle took a close look at the peculiar finances of Rep. Steve Stockman (R-TX), perhaps known better to Twitter users as the loudmouthed @SteveWorks4You. What the newspaper found is notable.

As both a candidate and a congressman, according to the Chronicle, Stockman has “failed to make federally required disclosures about business affiliations that stretch from Texas to the British Virgin Islands, and has provided no details about the business he claims as his sole source of income.”
…….
Stockman has established at least 16 other business names and entities in a number of states over the years — and at least 10 remain active. talkingpointsmemo.com

RBS

Well, you see, it’s not that they don’t or won’t get the mouse. It’s that you proposed to direct them. Which is NOT your role. You are the servant.

They will play with the mouse and when they are bored they might kill it or send it to another galaxy or turn it sideways in space —whatever is their perogative at the moment.

You can’t make the error of believing they live in your house. You live in their house only because they wish it.

Same as the mouse.

Yes, I think it would be helpful to learn the rudiments of language, very helpful indeed. While I didn’t take Latin, I was taught by nuns in elementary school who probably had, and English was always my best subject. Plus, the Mass was still celebrated in Latin back then and I did learn a bit of it just from that.

But people always gripe about having to learn a “dead” language, so that will never fly. Latin still figures in the professions, though. Even though language “lives” and changes, it has roots which carry forward. Linguistics is a very interesting subject.

That’s actually an interesting question now that I think about it more. The US is the only country boycotting Cuba. Everybody else on planet earth is free to go there, vacation, do business, etc. The American block on dealings with Cuba certainly has some effect but I doubt Cuba would be a whole lot different. Things might improve once the country opens itself up to investment and tourism.

My first HS

then we moved.

my second high school, as I remember it.

then it changed (I think I lived thru some of that construction)

Well look at that Grosse Point. Another friend in art college lived right on the edge of Grosse Point just off Jefferson.

I remember going up to the Motor City area to visit my school buddies in July of ‘73. I remember them driving me down by the area where the RenCen would be built. I stayed at the one friends Grosse Point home.

At that time the old Ford Estate was still standing and I couldn’t get over how freakin’ big it was and how far back off the road it was. That was a front yard!

Since I love old brick buildings, Detroit absolutely amazed me. The grand old homes from right around the Belle Isle area up Grand Blvd and that whole area.

Then in 1993 I went up because I would go to the CART races out on the isle and a friend (African American dude) and I drove up around that area and we were stunned by the buildings with roofs falling in, and people still living in a portion of a stately old home. I remember one about 6 story brick apartment building where one whole side had caved and fallen and it just sat there.

At one intersection, my buddy said…let’s get out of here. He was scared. If he was scared I was prepared to motor on!

So sad what happened to such a grand old city. Now I too has a sad.

he was a man of his times and imperfect like the rest of us. I don’t begrudge him for making alliances to further his cause, even though I find many of his allies reprehensible.

Yes, as I noted earlier many commenting on Think Progress feel the same way.

Earlier, you blatantly lied about the ThinkProgress article, which is a list of 6 attributes about Mandela that many people don’t know. Of those, one of those was about reprehensible allies—and of course, that’s against the normative background of the US being allies with truly reprehensible people, too.

But anyway, point is, you lied your ass off, got caught, and now you’re just trying the lie again with some ‘butter-wouldn’t-melt-in-my-mouth’ pretense that you were actually all on board with it from the beginning.

This particular form of performance art is really boring, and I think you’re getting stuck in an artistic rut. Maybe you should do another reprise of gloating about women being assaulted while making up shit about them. This recent work of yours is derivative and reminiscent of Andy Warhol on his laziest days.

436 Killgore Trout  Mon, Dec 9, 2013 5:37:03pm

A good article about the variety of views in South Africa
For Mandela, Reverence, but Criticism, Too

It’s worth reading the whole thing but the end sums it up nicely.

Once the political squabbles of Mandela’s era fade, though, the museum-approved, sanctified image of him is likely to take firmer hold, observers say, though it may not grow as strong as the one of him abroad.

“To idealize a great political leader — to try to take that person out of politics and the humanity out of that person — is in the end a futile or even contradictory endeavor,” Mr. Butler wrote.

Here’s TP’s article on some of the more unpleasant of Mandela’s attributes including his alliances with Arafat, Q’Daffy, Castro, etc

thinkprogress.org

Reader’s comments seem to think these are positive attributes

Just as a reminder what your original take on that article was, Killgore, since you seem to have forgotten.

Again, the other attributes listed there were:

1. Mandela blasted the Iraq War and American imperialism.
2. Mandela called freedom from poverty a “fundamental human right.”
3. Mandela criticized the “War on Terror” and the labeling of individuals as terrorists without due process.
4. Mandela called out racism in America
5. Mandela was a die-hard supporter of labor unions.

How unpleasant!

Because it’s about the control over them.

They’re convinced they can make the consequences go away by convincing the woman to withdraw charges/restraining orders/whatever. They’re more powerful than the courts, then, they can get away with it.

I agree.

Forgive if this is disjointed, that final really didn’t make me happy. But it’s done, at least.

If more of the ability to press charges and put forward restraining orders/felony charges/whatever was less dependent on the engagement of the victim, I think we would see more consequences in the area of DV in particular. But as long as the abuser can get to the victim and convince them to withdraw charges/the order/whatever, from a legal perspective, the system’s hands are tied.

And I think it would be lying to say that some abusers don’t get a high off of that; it’s proving their power not over just the victim but over the system as a whole, their ability to skirt the consequences of their actions.

I don’t think it’s the victim’s fault that this area is so murky; I definitely think there are things we could do as a society to make the system less subject to the influence of the abuser.

Predators know how to get what they want.

A lot do and have. Look at the women who wanted to marry douchbag whathisname who killed his wives in the Chicago Suburbs —he was a cop —geez, can’t remember … .

There is a really good TED presentation
ted.com

It’s not just “predators”. I’ve worked with battered women and have known them personally. It’s an emotional thing for many, often driven by emotional neediness, by lack of self-confidence and by plenty of cultural damnation of women, consigning them as dependent, incompetent, etc, even as they often make their own living. Too many women think they’re “the one” who can change another, and often blame former partners for not “understanding”. It’s not a class thing, but it’s sometimes an economic thing—women many times don’t want to “start over” or lose economic benefits they have accrued with their partner, much less be alone while they do it. This not only occurs in heterosexual partnerships, but in lesbian ones as well.

Each woman’s case is different, but there is always some component that is identifiable. It’s why I’ve always tried to teach women to (a) learn to support themselves first and be independent; (b) to be happy with your own company and know you are a worthy human being.

Um ‘scuse me but there is genuine legitimate concern by respectable people and organizations. The sign is rather overblown. But not long ago metadata could not be gathered without a warrant. The NSA and FBI did not have secret rooms at ISP’s. And if the FBI or NSA made a data demand of an ISP, they could openly fight it and object.

These measures as derived from the Patriot Act were said to be temporary. They would sunset.

Until careers and agencies depended on these things. Then the sunset promise faded away.

Yes, now that I think about it was SA because they were discussing DNA. The Prosecutor said if they had a DNA match they proceed regardless. They didn’t want the criminal on the streets.

Concrete evidence like DNA is what makes the difference. DV and many SA cases are difficult to present in court in a way that “removes doubt”.

Well, if they have DNA, they can often make the case without the victim needing to testify. But in domestic cases DNA often isn’t enough since it only proves a sexual act took place. The victim has to testify in order to show she did not consent.

The point being that they don’t need the survivors consent or cooperation (depending on the circumastances). If she was intoxicated, been given a rape drug, was under age. There are lots of ways a person is not able to give consent in which they would not have to testify.

Honestly, If divorce were feasable, we would have seen the same rates 60 years ago. Women were forced to stay until their husbands killed them or they were widowed.

Do you have any feel if less divorce at least helped the kids and the society? And since many here seem to be (ex)Catholic…remember how looked down upon the whole idea of divorce was in the church? I’m sure there were other similar pressures when I was younger. Not saying that was good, but it did keep a family together. Was that better?

And I admit, a lot of homes were cold as far as the relationship between the parents, but even if play acting, it just didn’t seem to cause the lack of parenting you see in many later generations of families. Some kids never have a father/discipline figure and the good/cop bad cop dynamic that really teaches about life’s boundaries.

I’m just going by gut feeling, I admit it could be very naive, but something has changed even more in the family dynamic…as there doesn’t appear to be much. I do appreciate your focus on it and domestic abuse, etc. It all befuddles me. I do not get living in a sad/angry state or making someone else sad, neglected, mistreated, etc.

I’m not sure what you are asking. I think a lot of people simply do not live well together and everyone is better off if they can work a solution —divorce or whatever.

I was raised to think divorce was a horrible thing. My life experience hasn’t shown me that it is.

It’s adults who don’t want to do the work to be good parents and good people that I see as the problem. Married or not, it takes work, introspection and often a lot of counselling to be the parent one wants to be.

Or, I should say, the parent the child needs.

They might have more substance to them if you dropped the performance art and just were a regular fucking human being.

I will be using this :)

This just in. Steve Stockman R-Nugent has filed to run in the Senate Primary against John Cornyn.

This will be priceless.

I am amused by the idea that Cornyn is a RINO that needs to be primaried from the right.

This is going to be hilarious.

Yeah, but it’s not for sex. It’s to keep peace, to keep the family together, to satisfy the predator, because they are brainwashed into believing they deserve it… .

I was divorced at age 21 with 2 small children. I wouldn’t put up with a charming philanderer who thought I was weak and w/2 kids couldn’t make it on my own. I wanted a secure, stable home life and I mistakenly thought he did, too. I never made that mistake again, and would provide my kids with as much of it as possible by myself. Society didn’t help me much, either. So, I toughened up, and never remarried. I know I made mistakes, even though my adult sons don’t think so, and their opinion is what counts.

Basic Common Denominator? People like sex, it sells.

But the level of dialogue seems incredibly base!

I have heard it described that if Apartheid in South Africa was Coca Cola, then Jim Crow in the South was Pepsi. The Southern conservative crowd obviously love their Pepsi. They still openly display the US equivalent of the Swastika flag down there.
