Arizona GOP Censures John McCain for ‘Liberal’ Record

PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Republican Party formally censured Sen. John McCain on Saturday, citing a voting record they say is insufficiently conservative.

The resolution to censure McCain was approved by a voice-vote during a meeting of state committee members in Tempe, state party spokesman Tim Sifert said. It needed signatures from at least 20 percent of state committee members to reach the floor for debate.

Sifert said no further action was expected.

McCain spokesman Brian Rogers declined to comment on the censure.

Otters are always a big draw, since they’re fast and playful. Although at Lincoln Park Zoo this past year the pair of river otters of the Children’s Zoo were often upstaged by the zoo’s beavers. I wouldn’t have thought it without seeing it, but beavers are quite mobile in the water and if they’re slower than otters they are still quite acrobatic.

Um, okay, but this “small cadre of wingnuts” controls the party. This was approved by a voice vote of AZ state GOP committee members. Voice votes don’t usually pass if there’s any ambiguity at all over comparative levels of support, so we can assume the motion was very popular with those fuckwits.

This is the problem, fish rot from the head on down. The people in charge of the GOP are trash, who appeal to trash, push trash politics and generally favor similar trash candidates. I fail to see how the the entire GOP doesn’t inevitably become trash under this scenario?

For the nuts, it’s about Mexicans. For McCain, its about practicality. “Deport ‘em all!!1” would not only be cruel, it would also be impractical and counter-productive and John McCain knows it. So he wants a practical approach to immigration and if that means the wingnuts whine that that’s what it means. He snarled “Build the darn fence!” in 2010, but he was careful not to close the door on real reform because he knows its needed.

Also, and I think importantly, John McCain III suffered brutally at the hands of bullies as a POW. As a result, he has a serious anger aimed at bullies, and he’s not going to kowtow to this pack of them.

Lastly, we all know just how aggressive John McCain is. Part of why he won’t back down is because he relishes fighting those whom he believes to be malefactors.

As leaders in the Republican Party, we are obligated to fully support our Party, platform, and candidates. Only in times of great crisis or betrayal is it necessary to publicly censure our leaders. Today we are faced with both. For too long we have waited, hoping Senator McCain would return to our Party’s values on his own. That has not happened. So with sadness and humility we rise and declare:

Whereas Senator McCain has amassed a long and terrible record of drafting, co-sponsoring and voting for legislation best associated with liberal Democrats, such as Amnesty, funding ObamaCare, the debt ceiling, assaults on the Constitution and 2nd amendment, and has supported liberal nominees;

Whereas this record has been disastrous and harmful to Arizona and the United States; and,

Whereas Senator McCain has campaigned as a conservative, made promises during his re-election campaigns, such as the needed and welcomed promise to secure our borders and finish the border fence, only to quickly flip-flop on those promises; and

Whereas McCain has abandoned our values and has been eerily silent against Liberals, yet publicly reprimands Conservatives in his own Party, therefore

BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that the Arizona Republican leadership censures Senator McCain for his continued disservice to our State and Nation,

Anyone ever make bagels? I am going to try, possibly next weekend.

This found this recipe at Epicurious and it doesn’t look too hard.

Let’s clear something up right away: New York City isn’t the only place in the world to get decent, authentic bagels. The truth is, you can make bagels that are just as good at home, no matter where you live. They’re one of the simplest breads to make, requiring only flour, water, salt, yeast, and malt—and one secret ingredient: time (in the form of long, slow, cold fermentation). Any decent bagel shop knows this and uses an overnight method to stretch out the fermentation process, releasing all sorts of subtle flavors trapped in the flour. While bagel shops often use a type of high-protein flour not available to home cooks to achieve that distinctively chewy texture, regular, unbleached bread flour can also do the trick. The real key is to use a much lower percentage of water than is used for baguettes and other European hearth breads, producing a stiff dough that can stand up to a dunking in boiling water before going into the oven. More than any ingredient or other aspect of the method, this boiling step is what defines the uniqueness of the bagel. That said, bagels do usually feature one other distinctive ingredient: barley malt. While this may seem like an exotic, hard-to-find product, it’s actually commonly available at most supermarkets, usually labeled “barley malt syrup.” If you can’t find it, simply substitute an equal amount of honey. Your bagels might not have that malty flavor, but they’ll still be better than almost any bagel you can buy. One final note: If you like bagels but don’t want to set up the boiling operation for just six of them, feel free to double the size of the batch and bake enough to freeze for future use.

Dough

1 tablespoon (0.75 oz / 21 g) barley malt syrup, honey, or rice syrup, or 1 teaspoon (0.25 oz / 7 g) diastatic malt powder
1 teaspoon (0.11 oz / 3 g) instant yeast
1 1/2 teaspoons (0.37 oz / 10.5 g) salt, or 2 1/2 teaspoons coarse kosher salt
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons (9 oz / 255 g) lukewarm water (about 95°F or 35°C)
3 1/2 cups (16 oz / 454 g) unbleached bread flour

Poaching liquid

2 to 3 quarts (64 to 96 oz / 181 to 272 g) water
1 1/2 tablespoons (1 oz / 28.5 g) barley malt syrup or honey (optional)
1 tablespoon (0.5 oz / 14 g) baking soda
1 teaspoon (0.25 oz / 7 g) salt, or 1 1/2 teaspoons coarse kosher salt

preparation

Do ahead

To make the dough, stir the malt syrup, yeast, and salt into the lukewarm water. Place the flour into a mixing bowl and pour in the malt syrup mixture. If using a mixer, use the dough hook and mix on the lowest speed for 3 minutes. If mixing by hand, use a large, sturdy spoon and stir for about 3 minutes, until well blended. The dough should form a stiff, coarse ball, and the flour should be fully hydrated; if it isn’t, stir in a little more water. Let the dough rest for 5 minutes.

Resume mixing with the dough hook on the lowest speed for another 3 minutes or transfer to a very lightly floured work surface and knead by hand for about 3 minutes to smooth out the dough and develop the gluten. The dough should be stiff yet supple, with a satiny, barely tacky feel. If the dough seems too soft or overly tacky, mix or knead in a little more flour.
Place the dough in a clean, lightly oiled bowl, cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap, and let the dough rise at room temperature for 1 hour.
When you’re ready to shape the bagels, prepare a sheet pan by lining it with parchment paper or a silicone mat, then misting it with spray oil or lightly coating it with oil. Divide the dough into 6 to 8 equal pieces. (A typical bagel is about 4 ounces or 113 grams before baking, but you can make them smaller. If you make more than 6 bagels, you may need to prepare 2 sheet pans.) Form each piece into a loose ball by rolling it on a clean, dry work surface with a cupped hand. (Don’t use any flour on the work surface. If the dough slides around and won’t ball up, wipe the surface with a damp paper towel and try again; the slight bit of moisture will provide enough traction for the dough to form into a ball.) There are two methods to shape the balls into bagels.

The first method is to poke a hole through the center of the ball to create a donut shape. Holding the dough with both thumbs in the hole, rotate the dough with your hands, gradually stretching it to create a hole about 2 inches in diameter.

The second method, preferred by professional bagel makers, is to use both hands (and a fair amount of pressure) to roll the ball into a rope about 8 inches long on a clean, dry work surface. (Again, wipe the surface with a damp towel, if necessary, to create sufficient friction on the work surface.)

Taper the rope slightly at each end and moisten the last inch or so of the ends. Place one end of the dough in the palm of your hand and wrap the rope around your hand to complete the circle, going between your thumb and forefinger and then all the way around. The ends should overlap by about 2 inches. Squeeze the overlapping ends together by closing your hand, then press the seam into the work surface, rolling it back and forth a few times to seal. Remove the dough from your hand, squeezing it to even out the thickness if need be and creating a hole of about 2 inches in diameter.

Place each shaped bagel on the prepared sheet pan, then mist with spray oil or brush with a light coating of oil. Cover the entire pan with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight or for up to 2 days. (You can also proof the full piece of dough in the oiled bowl overnight and then shape the bagels on baking day, 60 to 90 minutes before boiling and baking them, or as soon as they pass the float test.)

On baking day

Remove the bagels from the refrigerator 60 to 90 minutes before you plan to bake them, and if you plan to top them with dried onion or garlic, rehydrate those ingredients (see the variations). Immediately check whether the bagels are ready for baking using the “float test”: Place one of the bagels in a small bowl of cold water. If it sinks and doesn’t float back to the surface, shake it off, return it to the pan, and wait for another 15 to 20 minutes, then test it again. When one bagel passes the float test, they’re all ready to be boiled. If they pass the float test before you are ready to boil and bake them, return them to the refrigerator so they don’t overproof.

About 30 minutes before baking, preheat the oven to 500°F (260°C) and gather and prepare your garnishes (seeds, onions, garlic, and so on).
To make the poaching liquid, fill a pot with 2 to 3 quarts (64 to 96 oz / 181 to 272 g) of water, making sure the water is at least 4 inches deep. Cover, bring to a boil, then lower the heat to maintain at a simmer. Stir in the malt syrup, baking soda, and salt.

Gently lower each bagel into the simmering poaching liquid, adding as many as will comfortably fit in the pot. They should all float to the surface within 15 seconds. After 1 minute, use a slotted spoon to turn each bagel over. Poach for another 30 to 60 seconds, then use the slotted spoon to transfer it back to the pan, domed side up. (It’s important that the parchment paper be lightly oiled, or the paper will glue itself to the dough as the bagels bake.) Sprinkle on a generous amount of whatever toppings you like as soon as the bagels come out of the water (except cinnamon sugar; see the variation for details).

Transfer the pan of bagels to the oven, then lower the oven heat to 450°F (232°C).

Bake for 8 minutes, then rotate the pan and check the underside of the bagels. If they’re getting too dark, place another pan under the baking sheet. (Doubling the pan will insulate the first baking sheet.) Bake for another 8 to 12 minutes, until the bagels are a golden brown.

Cool on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes before slicing or serving.

Variations

You can replace any amount of the bread flour with an equal amount of whole grain flour (by weight), such as wheat or rye. If you do so, increase the water in the dough by 1 tablespoon (0.5 oz / 14 g) for every 2 ounces (56.5 g) of whole grain flour you substitute.

Top your bagels with any combination of the following garnishes: poppy seeds, sesame seeds, coarse salt, or rehydrated dried onions or garlic. (Soak dried onions or garlic in water to cover for at least 1 hour before applying.) The toppings will stick even better if you first brush the top of each bagel with an egg white wash made by whisking 1 egg white with 1 tablespoon (0.5 oz / 14 g) of water. If using coarse salt as a garnish, remember that a little goes a long way.

For raisin bagels, mix in 1 1/3 cups (8 oz / 227 g) of raisins during the final 2 minutes of mixing and, if you like cinnamon, stir 1/2 teaspoon (0.14 oz / 4 g) of ground cinnamon into the flour before you start mixing. When the bagels come out of the oven, brush the tops with melted butter and dip the top into a bed of cinnamon sugar to give it a very tasty cinnamon crust. You can make cinnamon sugar by whisking 2 tablespoons (1.6 oz / 44 g) of ground cinnamon into 1/2 cup (4 oz / 113 g) of granulated sugar.

Death Korps of Krieg

The Death Korps of Krieg is the name given to all of the Imperial Guard regiments that originate from the devastated, post-nuclear Death World of Krieg in the Segmentum Tempestus. Krieg was the site of a rebellion against the Imperium of Man over 1,500 standard years ago in the 40th Millennium and was bombarded with nuclear weapons followed by five hundred years of grinding warfare to purge the heretical rebels. After all those years of nuclear destruction and bitter trench warfare, Krieg was reduced to a scorched, radioactive husk of a world composed of dust and mud whose surviving people were forced to retreat into underground hive cities to survive the toxic planetary environment. I read Joe Pistone’s book ‘Donnie Brasco’ a few years before they made the movie. Great book. One story in there is when one of the mob bosses went down to Florida to oversee the night club they opened. He brought his personal chef and asked him why the bread didn’t taste as good as it usually is. He said it was because of the water. Next thing you know a tanker full of NYC water arrived in Florida.

When American cities were building their water systems in the 1870’s-1890’s, the steel mill made each city’s order its own separate production run. The impurities are unique to that city, and over the decades trace minerals leach from the pipes into the water. It’s subtle, but true foodies can taste the difference.

San Francisco sourdough and cippolina, Baltimore clam chowder, Philly cheese-steak, Los Angeles tortillas, etc. The exact same recipe doesn’t come out exactly the same anywhere else.

New Yorkers are worried about this… we have two huge water mains coming into the city from the reservoir; they’re from the 1880’s, with a 100-year design life, at this point they’re held together by rust. For the last 8 years we’ve been drilling a tunnel to establish a third main, as soon as it goes online we turn off one of the originals and go spend 2 years patching it. Then it will be turned back on and the other old one stopped and patched. But when this happens… OMG THE PIZZA AND BAGELS WILL SUFFER!!

That’s going to make it very hard for him to avoid a murder conviction. Standing one’s ground when faced by thugs is something people can see as justifiable, but gunning people down from ambush and doing it with a precision weapon (meaning he was clearly shooting to kill) is going to be seen in a very different light, even in West Virginia. Note that this man was charged with Murder in the 1st, which means that the police think this was a premeditated killing.

Dnepropetrovsk is located in southeast central Ukraine and is its 4th largest city.


It is also the scene of a horrendous killing spree by 19 yr olds in 2007 who were charged with 21 murders, mostly with a hammer and other heavy metal objects. It’s a gruesome story of spoiled, privileged middle class youth who took pleasure in gouging out victims’ eyes while they were still alive and cutting the fetus from the uterus of one victim. The court described the motive of the killers as “morbid self-affirmation”.

It starts odd and low-key, gets really funny when they help Arkin break out of the old folk’s home, and then the last couple minutes of the movie are like the end of Vanilla Fudge’s “Street Walking Woman,” where you go “F— me, so that’s where Cactus originated.” It’s really pretty powerful considering the entire movie is the build-up for it.

Well, I don’t speak Russian or Ukrainian, but the red represents takeovers, the orange near takeovers, the yellow leaning, and the white very pro-Russian, I suppose. That’s the way I read it. Notice that in 4 districts the hammer & sickle are slashed through, so I suppose that means a complete takeover of the local governmental offices.

No, he won’t. The men he shot had a legal right to be where they were, the shed in question was not the shooter’s property, and there was no confrontation between the victims and the killer. He shot them at range with a scope rifle and that is not considered an act of self-defense even by wingnuts. That’s cold-blooded murder, and the fact that the shooter has been charged with 1st Degree Murder instead of the 2nd Degree Murder charge common for most “bad shooting claimed as self-defense” is an indication of how the police and DA see this case.

One way to prevent search engines from indexing your links is to include the text rel=”nofollow” in them. The test was just to see whether LGF allows the “nofollow” to persist when the link is posted, and it does (some sites don’t).

I’m talking overall here, if the right questions are asked of people without partisan bias, most of us want the same package of things out of our government and the society it’s supposed to help us run. Those things are more center and center left, especially now since the right has lost it’s blessed mind, or at least the parts running the show have. We all want decent public education, well maintained and built infrastructure, needed amounts of law enforcement with proper training, low unemployment, community resources like parks and libraries and so on. Right wing tea party or libertarians think those things are horrible liberal traps now. Those voices get the most attention and are very good at intimidating the more moderate conservatives into either silence or shifting hard right. That’s a problem.

Republicans, in their current form at least, know how to play politics. They haven’t the slightest notion of how to govern and they seem to not care a bit about doing so.

Very good point. I don’t think there are any other real lefty types living in this little complex, but all of them would be sunk if they didn’t have school aid (4 are in community college and getting aid), SNAP, Medicaid, SS, or some other form of govt programs.

People are not going to allow themselves to starve, or die of something, or even refuse to educate their kids (and most don’t have the wherewithal for home schooling anyway, or even much distance learning). People will get what they need, even if it means appealing to the govt, and that goes across all political lines.

I can’t understand any move by Yanuk, based upon that map, that would see him remain in power without early elections and the strongly possibility of his being replaced with a pro-EU successor.

I think he knows he’s toast. It’s just a matter of what kind of move he’ll make at this point. The Maidans were very smart not to accept his offer (a real insult, BTW)—it would have been the same old, same old.

So, we don’t know what’s really going on behind the scenes of govt, but I doubt very strongly that the military would even do a job on the populace of Ukraine that would be enough to put this movement down. I think many would defect first.

Ordering the military to put down the protests at this point would be the final straw. Even if most didn’t defect, which is a strong possibility, it would be a signal to the rebel leaders that there is no possibility of a peaceful end to all this.

It was difficult for the Republicans to run a strong campaign against Obama without letting the racist show. It is going to be so much harder to run against Clinton without letting the sexist show, because they still don’t see their paternalism as sexist.

I could see the insurance company saying that they wouldn’t pay, since it wasn’t medically approved or necessary treatment, I don’t see the hospital eating the charge, and I SURE AS HELL don’t see Texas jumping up to cover it.

Anybody in that industry (medical billing / insurance / law) have any ideas.

Get the feeling the family’s gonna be back in court, either arguing with the insurance company or the hospital. The former will, as you said, likely argue that the care given wasn’t medically necessary and so refuse to cover the costs, while the latter will say it was bound by law to provide that care but the cost for doing so still falls on the family.

No shit, let them take him to court over it. Go before a judge and argue that he should be responsible for the costs of care they provided in contradiction of the family’s wishes. I can’t imagine any judge would look at the facts of this case and rule in the hospital’s favor.

SI, please understand my words and emotions are different from others by necessity. No, now the Arizona Republican Party is attacking the 2008 GOP Presidential nominee and the person who introduced Sarah Palin to the world as not being sufficiently conservative. Where does it go from here, and where does it finally end?
