I don’t know how anyone gets inspired watching guys like Santorum and Rand Paul. I just get depressed watching them because it’s proof positive on how the party of Lincoln has become a party of primitive bigots who would have voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964 or think wanting some form of post high school education is snobbery.

Well I am glad Bryan at least has perspective. I mean the biggest issue surely isn’t something like poverty, religious strife, racism, or global warming but people of the same gender being sexually attracted to each other.Where can I send money!

Yes, such a radical social experiment that the IDF (which has just a tad more reason to be on constant high alert than the US Army) has had openly gay soldiers for years without any problems.

This is something I’d ask of any right wing nutjob who purports to love Israel and think of them as a great ally. I’ll throw in the UK and Canada as well as top allies who allow openly gay men and women to serve in their armed forces and do quite well. Do wingnuts really want us to resemble Iran when it comes to letting gay individuals serve their country?

It’s natural but I’ll be damned if every speaker at this whine fest isn’t a two bit whiner who thinks Obama is out to get them and everyone right of center. I mean these guys love to talk about how they love Ronald Reagan. I am no Reagan fanboy but Reagan at least knew how to be positive. These guys are all about negative and feeding off of resentments. Right now it’s a burr in my ass, since I’m following Fred Clark’s Left Behind recaps. The recaps have hit the point where we’re deep into the anti-Semitic bullshit, where the “heroes” have to flee from Israeli Jews intent on killing them because one of them is a rabbi who announced that Christ is the True Messiah (they already assassinated his family). They’re feeling from Israel into the territory of the Antichrist’s One-World Government, for fuck’s sake.
This is a best-seller Christian novel that claims to be an extrapolation of the prophecy…people believe this shit will come true. There’s study guides explaining these books like they were scripture.

Crimea solidifies ties with Russia ahead of referendum on leaving Ukraine
SEVASTOPOL, Ukraine — Russia and Crimea moved to solidify ties Friday as pro-Russia parties in Crimea planned campaigns for a referendum on splitting from Ukraine and Moscow enthusiastically greeted a visiting Crimean delegation.
(snip)
“In Moscow, a Crimean delegation led by Volodymyr Konstantynov, head of Crimea’s regional parliament, was applauded by Russian parliamentarians a day after Crimean lawmakers voted to join Russia and validate the decision in a referendum. Konstantynov said the autonomous republic will hold an “honest and transparent” referendum on its status in the presence of observers from Russia and other countries.”

Behind the curtain: who’s really sponsoring CPAC.
It’s not grassroots organizations. It’s big energy companies, tobacco, and the NRA.
Rarely seen and previously unreported tax filings for the ACU and ACU Foundation, the group responsible for staging CPAC, reveal that in the 2010 tax year, the National Rifle Association provided $225,000 of the ACU Foundation’s overall revenue. In 2010 the ACU Foundation reported $288,670 in grant revenue and $1,063,103 in “program service revenue.” The NRA’s executive vice president and CEO, Wayne LaPierre, has been a regular featured speaker at past CPAC events and he again spoke at the gathering on Thursday. The 2013 CPAC included an event titled “NRA University” at which CPAC attendees could “learn more about NRA, Second Amendment, gun control debate.” It even offered participants “a FREE one-year NRA membership,” according to the conference schedule. The NRA is a “presenting sponsor” at the 2014 conference—a sponsorship level requiring a $110,000 contribution.
In 2010 the billionaire Koch brothers’ companies contributed a total of $50,000 to the ACU and the ACU Foundation. In the same year, cigarette giant Altria contributed $25,000 to the ACU, and the conservative Anschutz Foundation contributed $25,000 to the ACU Foundation.
So, if you’ve wondered why Wayne LaPierre gets to scowl and complain and cajole the audience to buy guns before the President takes them away, it’s because the NRA paid for the spot.
Here’s the list of other sponsors, and lots of familiar names.
Presenting Sponsor: $110,000
Associate Sponsor: $60,000
Supporting Sponsor: $25,000
Contributing Sponsor: $18,000
Participating Sponsor: $9,000
(and yes, I’m paging this).

And he told some story that supposedly came from a member of Scott Walker’s administration about a kid in the lunch program who told this person he wanted a paper bag lunch from home and not a school lunch because it meant someone at home cared about him. Well, as per usual, Ryan is a lying sack of crap. The story comes from this book and it was taken out of context. It’s a book that’s about showing compassion toward those with less than you have and understanding that in doing so we find we have more in common, not less.

PBS didn’t “hide” anything. They have private deals with funders that they’re under no obligation to disclose, and they’ve stated outright that these funders have NO editorial influence.
We have concluded that the time has come to find a new, long-term home for The NewsHour. The current operation has worked beautifully because our long-time partnership with Liberty Media has been as perfect as any such relationship could be. When Liberty acquired its majority interest in MLP 18 years ago it was done with the agreement that editorial control and management would always rest with us-Robert MacNeil and Jim Lehrer, individually. Liberty has honored that arrangement in such a way that has made it possible for us to have the independence we all have enjoyed all these years.

“To be clear: 30 states have banned same-sex marriage in their state constitution, usually by legally defining marriage as between a man and a woman, according to the Human Rights Campaign.”
Next, he’s going to try to tell us that no states ever banned interracial marriage either.
Hey, if you want to go for the big lie, may as well go all in.

So yesterday Paul Ryan ran his yap about school lunches and kids who get them being unloved.
These assholes really need to spend about a year figuring out how to pay bills and feed their families on minimum wage and STFU and quit vilifying the poor. God this pisses me off.
IF these assholes had to go on government assitance, they’d be the first ones complaining about cuts to those programs. Paul Ryan is the ultimate fuck you, I got mine type of conservative. He had no problem using the system to help pay for his education but he doesn’t want other people to enjoy the same programs he did. In short, he’s a sleazy hypocrite.

In early 2003, he emerged as the senior commander of the FRPI,[2] a militia group which was involved in the conflict in Ituri. On 24 February 2003, Katanga allegedly led an attack on the village of Bogoro in which rebels under his command went on an “indiscriminate killing spree”,[2] killing at least 200 civilians, imprisoning survivors in a room filled with corpses, and sexually enslaving women and girls.[1] It has also been alleged that Katanga helped lead other crimes, including the massacre of more than 1,200 civilians in an attack at Nyakunde Hospital in September 2002.[4]

The reason why PBS has been forced to turn to independent donators like this is that the Republican Party has been relentlessly attacking and demonizing them for many years, cutting funding at every opportunity and turning them into a symbol of the culture war.
I agree, it’s a shame that PBS has to do this - but it’s either that or shut down, and I still think we need an outlet like PBS. When people like David Sirota add their smear jobs to the mix, they’re not helping the situation — they’re helping the right wing destroy PBS.

This may make it harder to get Europe to go against Russia though, if past history is any indication. Let’s remember this issue with Bosnia:
In his book The Clinton Tapes: Wrestling History with the President from 2009, historian and author Taylor Branch, a long-time friend of former United States president Bill Clinton, made public more than 70 recorded sessions with the president during his presidency from 1993 through 2001.[54][55] According to a session taped on 14 October 1993, it is stated that:
Clinton said U.S. allies in Europe blocked proposals to adjust or remove the embargo. They justified their opposition on plausible humanitarian grounds, arguing that more arms would only fuel the bloodshed, but privately, said the president, key allies objected that an independent Bosnia would be “unnatural” as the only Muslim nation in Europe. He said they favored the embargo precisely because it locked in Bosnia’s disadvantage. [..] When I expressed shock at such cynicism, reminiscent of the blind-eye diplomacy regarding the plight of Europe’s Jews during World War II, President Clinton only shrugged. He said President François Mitterrand of France had been especially blunt in saying that Bosnia did not belong, and that British officials also spoke of a painful but realistic restoration of Christian Europe. Against Britain and France, he said, German chancellor Helmut Kohl among others had supported moves to reconsider the United Nations arms embargo, failing in part because Germany did not hold a seat on the U.N. Security Council.
Difference here is that, unlike Kohl, Merkel doesn’t give a damn about Muslims.

The local Philly outlet, WHYY, has been promoting a doc named David Perlmutter during their pledge drives. IIRC, his shtick is claiming that gluten-free diets will cure things like Alzheimer’s.
Early indications are this guy is approaching Dr. Oz status. But when you’re desperate to pay the bills, you gotta do what you gotta do, I guess.

Oh, actually, I had a thought and needed a post to respond to.
So, I chose that one. I’m saying that the Big -3 in Europe will be much less willing to help the Ukraine if it would mean protecting Muslims. Because, based off of past history, they will let them get murdered.
Our initial response to Bosnia was one of desperation:
Nonetheless, the United States used both “black” C-130 transports and back channels including Islamist groups to smuggle weapons to Bosnian-Muslim forces via Croatia.[53] Inter Services Intelligence played active role during 1992-1995 and secretly supplied the Muslim fighters with arms, ammunition and guided anti tank missiles to give them a fighting chance against the aggression.
Pakistan should be proud that they saved Bosnia. Very much so.

I’m glad Rand was specific enough to be easily proven completely uninformed:
“We won’t trade our liberty for security,” Paul said, setting the overarching theme of the speech: “Not now, not ever.”
He railed against the National Security Agency’s controversial phone metadata collection, telling the crowd: “If you have a cell phone, you are under surveillance. I believe what you do on your cell phone is none of their damn business.”
WSJ: NSA Collects 20% or Less of U.S. Call Data, Program Doesn’t Cover Records for Most Cellphones
The program had been described as collecting records on virtually every phone call placed in the U.S., but in fact, it doesn’t cover records for most cellphones, the fastest-growing sector in telephony and an area where the agency has struggled to keep pace, according to several people familiar with the program.
The dwindling coverage suggests the NSA’s program is less pervasive than widely believed and also less useful.
…
The agency’s legal orders to U.S. phone companies don’t cover most cellphone records, a gap the NSA has been trying to address for years.

re: #336 HappyWarrior
Neither are real progressive. David supported the Iraq War (though he would later as Foreign Minister be friendlier to Pakistan than India, and ejecting an Israeli Diplomat over a forged passpor during the assassin incident a few years ago).
Here are Ed Miliband’s positions:
He also supported making the UK’s 50% top rate of tax permanent, as well as the institution of a new financial transaction tax, mutualising Northern Rock, putting limits on top salaries, scrapping tuition fees in favour of a graduate tax, implementing a living wage policy and the scrapping of the ID cards policy, and has spoken in favour of a “National Care Service”.
Though Labour remained officially neutral, he in a personal capacity supported the ultimately unsuccessful “Yes to AV” campaign in the Alternative Vote referendum on 5 May 2011, saying that it would benefit Britain’s “progressive majority”.[98][99] In September 2011, Miliband stated that a future Labour Government would immediately cut the cap on tuition fees for university students from £9,000 per year to £6,000, though he also stated that he remained committed to a graduate tax in the long-run.[100] Together with Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls, Miliband has also promoted a “five-point plan for jobs and growth” aimed at helping the UK economy, involving extending the bonus tax on banks pioneered by Alistair Darling, bringing forward planned long-term investment to help reduce unemployment, cutting the rate of VAT from 20% back to 17.5%, cutting VAT on home improvements to 5% for a temporary one year period, and instigating a one-year national insurance break to encourage employers to hire more staff.[101] Miliband has also endorsed the Blue Labour trend in the Labour Party, founded by Maurice Glasman. Blue Labour talks about family and friendships at the heart of society, rather than just material wealth; it also offers a very strong critique of the free-market as well as the big state. This was seen to have influenced his 2011 conference speech, signalling “predatory and productive capitalism”.

I have a soft spot in my heart for metal, of all kinds, even if it’s not all my thing. (Iron Maiden RULES!!!) It’s helped my son deal with a lot of issues and we used it as part of sensory integration when he was much younger and couldn’t deal with loud noises. Now he keeps bugging us for tickets to Mayhem Festival every year, lol. The local metal community has accepted him, and while he’s not close with anyone in the scene, they don’t bully him and I can drop him off at a couple of local venues and know he’ll be ok.
When I was growing up I listened to nothing but metal. I tried to fit in with the “cool kids” aka the preppies and jocks and was always treated like crap and bullied by them, so I started hanging out with the metal heads and so-called “losers” (who were also supposed bullies) and made a lot of great friends. Never had to do anything more than just hang out and could be myself without having to try and impress anyone.

There’s a program called Blessings in a Backpack that sends home food to kids in need on Fridays because a lot of kids go hungry on the weekends. It truly sucks that something like that has to exist in the first fucking place.
I’m sorry your parents weren’t there for you, I hope you’re ok now. I just wish conservative buttheads like those at CPAC would understand that poverty isn’t limited to people who don’t care or aren’t trying, and that it’s just plain evil to punish everyone when in most homes it’s not that way. Not to even mention that the amount of money spent on these things is paltry compared to corporate tax loopholes, offshoring money by rich people, waste in defense contracts, and the salaries of lazy fucking congresspeople.
Reminds me of a story I read yesterday of the arrest of a woman in LA whose 2 and 3 yr olds were found wandering a busy street. She was 32, iirc, and had already had had 6 kids taken away. Someone said the 3 yr old had been seen in a liquor store close by getting bread so he and the 2 yr old would have something to eat. Cops said condition of the apt was horrible. Can’t understand why she was allowed to keep those poor kids, but there was little other info. Other than monitoring someone like this 24/7, there are just some people who, usually due to drugs or alcohol, just can’t cope with everyday life.

Sirius XM has been a boon to metal. They have the classic stuff but also a few channels playing the newer stuff and there are some good Hard Rock and Metal acts still kicking ass. Admittedly I spend more time listening to Sirius XM’s Rock Bar (stuff ranging from 70’s rock up through Hard Rock and metal that you’d like to be listening to while shooting pool at a bar) than I do the newer metal channels like Octane but even that channel plays some of the newer stuff. I wasn’t aware of that but wow makes Jindal look like an even bigger prick than he already is. Bieber and the rest are a product of the disney-fication of music as a whole. It’s one of the reasons I despise most of what is on the radio now-a-days. It started with boy bands in the 90’s an continues now. It’s funny but also sad in a way. I mean, yeah, metal was kind of the same during the 80’s but at least there was some originality in the songs and sound. Plus many of the metal bands wrote their own songs and all of them knew how to play instruments.

Yeah, so do I, but I’ve never been “cool” even when I was listening to a lot of the earlier 60s stuff that took others a while to pick up on. I listened almost exclusively to Black Radio when I was in HS in the ’50s when rhythm and blues was really coming into its own and “crossing over”. This was in Miami, and my best friends were a Filipina and her adopted sister who was Cuban, and they had a transistor radio; my dad wouldn’t let me listen to “that music” at home. I just have never liked pop music and always look elsewhere.

Oh geez. Queensryche. I was super into those guys in the late 80’s and early 90’s but after one of their guitarists left the band I stopped following them. I’d hear things here and there and wonder what the fuck happened because they were practically a different band. Turns out it was a massive case of Lead Singer Disease — the vocalist got his wife installed as manager, brought in his own outside writers, etc. They finally fired that guy, hired the guy who’d been singing in Crimson Glory, and put out some new music last year. I liked it.

Did the Russian secret service approach you?
- Of course. Even the secret service of Andorra would have approached me, if they had had the chance: that’s their job.
But I didn’t take any documents with me from Hong Kong, and while I’m sure they were disappointed, it doesn’t take long for an intelligence service to realize when they’re out of luck. I was also accompanied at all times by an utterly fearless journalist with one of the biggest megaphones in the world, which is the equivalent of Kryptonite for spies. As a consequence, we spent the next 40 days trapped in an airport instead of sleeping on piles of money while waiting for the next parade. But we walked out with heads held high.
I would also add, for the record, that the United States government has repeatedly acknowledged that there is no evidence at all of any relationship between myself and the Russian intelligence service.
Another odd response. So he says he has been in contact with Russian intelligence. He claims he didn’t have any documents with him, and implies he’d have been richly rewarded if he had (“sleeping on piles of money while waiting for the next parade”). He also implies that somehow Wikileaks’ Sarah Harrison protected him from being used by foreign intelligence services, which while ridiculous on its face, makes even less sense given she’s long since left his company. He doesn’t give any detail about what he discussed with or told Russian intelligence, and doesn’t outright deny an ongoing relationship with them, but instead just writes that the US gov’t has no evidence of it.

I just can’t even.
Here’s some ammunition. This is from July 2013: “In fact, if you compare Laura Bush to the Presidents, she is currently the third most internationally traveled of that group, behind Bill Clinton and her husband [GWB] - though President Obama will likely push her back to fourth in a few years.”

Seriously, the idiots at Fox think that just because every day this winter isn’t 100 degrees Fahrenheit, climate change is a hoax. Pathetic fuckers.

I really don’t understand the whole “rewriting history” crap accusation. I liked Mrs. Bush’s reading intiative just as I think Mrs. Obama’s getting kids to eat healthy and exercise one is admirable. Why Wingnuts scoff at that campaign and then complain like losers when people go on public assistance just amuses me. Oh you don’t want people in authority and influecne to encourage our young ones to eat well and exercise but you’ll throw a fit when our record highs in obesity come to having people having to get more assistance, conservatives are so tone deaf.

Yes, but Mrs. Bush carried the White card. This is all about race. The Obamas will never do anything right according to that crowd. Even though Michelle is fit (and has arms to die for), she is mocked because of the stinking racism of that bunch of loonies.

Of course. Really if any other white first lady had pursued the exercise and healthy eating campaign, the wingnuts really wouldn’t think anything of it but somehow wanting our kids to eat healthy and exercise well makes Michelle “uppity.”

Bingo. They still think women who look like Michelle should be doing domestic work. They can fuck off.

I dunno.
There’s some kind of contrarian thing going on where any authority figure suggesting that you should be aware of what’s in what you eat is a totalitarian hippy.
I mean, there’s a shit ton of lobbyist money from food companies that don’t like having to disclose stuff like added fat and sugar.
Edit:
Though in the case of the FLOTUS, it’s hard to sort out the racism from the other equal ridiculous motives.
Like there is something deeply fucked up and racial about the way that food at the Obama White House has been policed. All that stuff about “they’re wallowing in luxury”…

True. Anyhow, as someone who’s gotten healthy through more exercise and healthy eating, I commend the first lady for wanting kids to work on it while they’re young. And honestly healthy food is better than fast food. Wish I had realized that when I was younger but hey never too late.
