Never cared for him, but that’s mostly a style issue. Ellington, Armstrong, Goodman’s small group work, or going further back, Bix Biderbeck are more my taste.

Expanding opportunities and amplifying the voices of women and girls isn’t a zero-sum equation, because gender equality conveys broad development dividends for men and boys, families, and communities. Conversely, constraining women’s agency by limiting what jobs they can do or condoning gender-based violence can cause huge economic losses and hinder development efforts.

“I don’t think I can talk about that, to be honest, but I think it’s kind of public knowledge, that people know that it is being worked on,” Le said of the long-fabled Half-Life 3, speaking on podcast goRGNtv. “I guess I could say that I did see something that looked kinda like in the Half-Life universe. And I mean it wouldn’t surprise anyone if I said they’re doing it, they’re working on it, yeah. So to go on a limb I’d say I did see some concept art for Half-Life 3.”
Le also confessed to being “really excited” about a new, unannounced entry in the Left 4 Dead series. “I saw it, it looks great. I was really excited when I saw that, I was like ‘wow, this looks great’.”

Meanwhile, in my series this week on stories using the name ‘Benghazi’ that are actually about Benghazi:
Support grows for renegade Libyan general
The renegade former army officer Khalifa Haftar is gathering support from various military units and militias after he launched an offensive against the Islamist militias in Benghazi.
The offensive began with attacks on the militias’ bases in the southwest of Benghazi on 16 May. Haftar then held a press conference to announce that his Libyan National Army had launched Operation ‘Al-Kharamah’ (dignity) to “purge the city of terrorists”.
The weak central government said it did not order the offensive and accused Haftar, who holds no official position in the military, of launching a coup, but conceded that he was supported by military units, including the nearby Binina Airbase, which flew sorties in support of the initial offensive.
The airbase’s Facebook page suggests its serviceable aircraft include two MiG-23s, as many as five MiG-21s, and some Mi-24/35 attack helicopters.
SNIP
The commander of Libya’s air defences, Colonel Juma al-Abani, announced on 20 May that he supported Haftar. His force’s Facebook page suggests it is equipped with at least three vehicle-mounted Igla-S short-range surface-to-air missile systems, at least two M53/59 Praga self-propelled anti-aircraft guns, and various light anti-aircraft guns mounted on Toyota Land Cruisers.
While Haftar is known for his confident pronouncements, he alluded to the difficulties facing his forces after they failed to decisively defeat the Benghazi Islamists in the initial assaults on their bases. “Now they have gone into residential areas so we have to be very careful and the movement is slow because we have to be … very careful not to hit civilians. It’s going to take some time,” he told The Washington Post .
I hope Gen. Haftar is given the support he needs to succeed. The Islamist militias in Benghazi need to be suppressed as armed forces and those aligned with Al Qaeda must be destroyed.

Evening lizards!
We just had a scare. My wife was in bed and heard a car coming down the driveway and turning into our neighbor’s driveway. She then heard gunshots and looked out the window in time to see the car speeding around the house spinning gravel all the way down to the road. She came and got me and asked if I would check on our neighbor so I went over. I knocked on the front door and nobody answered. I can see the TV on in the other room. I came back and looked up her number and called. No answer. I went back and knocked on the front door again then both back doors. Nobody answered. I walked back to our house and my wife called 911.
The cops came and went over there. Good news nothing bad happened. She was on the phone the whole time with her brother and didn’t even hear the car or the gunshots. Weird.

Good for a Counter Insurgency but dead meat against any real enemy. For mud moving the 23’s are actually not too bad. Hang some rocket pods on those hard points and most will be cowering & looking for cover. But the 21’s & helios are not worth much in the real world.

“Race realists” are really coming out of the closet to defend the recently published Troublesome Inheritance.
On the Slate review that came out a couple of weeks ago commenters continue to drift in, and this was posted 17 hours ago:
Ortega Gasset 17 hours ago
How come it’s always anglosaxons like E.O. Wilson, Watson, Nicholas Wade and Jarod Taylor who come up with common sensical, apolitical racial realism and jews like Diamond, Gould, Lewontin, Rose and the author of this piece, Gelman, with this hysterical ultrarelativism? It makes you wonder, who benefits from these cheap tales of universality…
I think we can safely file this one under What Anti-Semitism?

A better, more to the point, refutation of Nicholas Wade is found in the review in the 5 June version of The New York Review of Books:

re: #76 freetoken
Race, which is the whole premise upon which Wade bases his argument, has been discredited for decades. Yet, the “race realists” hang onto the notion because it suits their purposes.
From Wikipedia’s entry for False Premise:
A false premise can also be a premise that is poorly or incompletely defined so as to make the conclusion questionable. The following joke from Plato and a Platypus Walk Into a Bar illustrates the point:
“An old cowboy goes into a bar and orders a drink. As he sits there sipping his whiskey, a young lady sits down next to him. … She says, ‘I’m a lesbian. I spend my whole day thinking about women. …’ A little while later, a couple sits down next to the old cowboy and asks him, ‘Are you a real cowboy?’ He replies, ‘I always thought I was, but I just found out I’m a lesbian’”.

How could a man as intelligent as Mark Cuban not understand what liberals—especially black liberals—mean when they talk about a dialogue concerning racial relations? Their idea of a dialogue is denunciations and demands on their part, answered by apologies and groveling accession on our part. Cuban fails to understand that as a white man he is irredeemably evil and that he has no right to be afraid of any black individual whatsoever. Even if the hooded black teenager on a dark street has felonious, indeed murderous intentions, Cuban would only be getting what he deserves.

I disagree with Cooke: it’s unfair to call Americans “cowards” for being reluctant to engage in discussions of race when the radical Left is just waiting, fangs dripping with venom, to strike. Its weapons are dishonest but potent: reckless accusations of racism on the one hand, the argument from intimidation on the other. Cooke also seems to agree (at least by default) that white racism is a subject that needs a lot of discussion - why? Very few white people are prejudiced against blacks any more; the reverse is sadly perhaps less true (talk about a conversation Holder doesn’t want to have!).It will, however, take real bravery to talk about the evils of “affirmative action” which systematically discriminates against whites (especially white males) and Asians, and which has never been justifiable. Can you imagine a Republican talking about the need to end affirmative action? Neither can I - but think of the screams on the Left!

They tell us to check our privilege. They tell us that to be white in America is to be inherently racist. They tell us that it is a lie (and in fact a form of bigotry in itself) to claim to be colorblind, and that we must acknowledge our own bigotry. So then a man does that. He checks his privilege, owns up to his own bigotry, and castigates himself for his sins. And for that, he is vilified by the same progressives who demanded just that.
And so forth. All signals of pent up resentment. If only they could speak their mind and not be censored - I did notice that NRO deleted a couple of comments.
79 | freetoken May 23, 2014 11:37:27pm |
And NRO just posted their rebuttal of TNC, done of course by Kevin Williamson:
Currently zero comments.

80 | freetoken May 23, 2014 11:42:27pm |
What I find interesting is that Williamson sounds almost apologetic for having to take on this task. He doesn’t really try to discredit what Coates wrote, regarding the past, and even acknowledges that what Coates writes about the present is partially correct.
Instead, Williamson does his best to try and pivot the argument to indict liberals and their New Deal policies, etc.
We’ll see if the NRO commenters have any part of this approach.

re: #78 freetoken
It’s convenient for them to assume there is such a quantity as race, because all the quasi-scientific handwaving enables them to justify their own prejudices. As a journalist, Wade did a piss-poor job of addressing the scientific basis of race, or rather, the lack of such a basis. Race is a cultural construct, not a scientific one.
Meanwhile, the supposedly superior whites are curiously mum about Asians’ generally superior performance on math and science exams.
I’ve followed this kind of pseudo-scientific garbage since the 1970s, when the pop expert du jour was William Shockley, of transistor fame. The quality of the “research” and arguments have not improved one iota.

The water samples that tested positive for bacteria were collected at Mt. Tabor Reservoirs 1 and 5, and at the SE 2nd Avenue and Salmon Street water sampling station.

My feeling, of late has been that the kind of individual whose reaction to offensive comments made by characters like Bundy, Sterling, and thoughtful articles and observations, like Coates’, is to throw a massive hissyfit and point at the ‘Left’ and rational people and declare that they are the ‘true racists’ do ,in fact, understand the finer parts of the debate. Not all of them, nor even most of them obviously. But their reaction comes from feeling a strong guilt at one’s race and the abusive role it has played in a lot of recent history.
And instead of embracing this impulse to feeling the collective guilt and learning to apply this new perspective to how a just society ought to be structured with the object of somehow elevating the communities still subjected to racism to a level where they are offered the same opportunities and privileges that whites enjoy, their intellect avoids accepting any responsibility for how the status quo is perpetuated, and instead blames those raising the issue in the first place.
I heard this a lot when our PM and Parliament made an apology to the aboriginal peoples for past abuses. The apology wasn’t for the original colonisation of the continent, nor was it an apology for the genocides that occurred thereafter. Rather it was an apology to those aboriginal children stolen from their mothers to be raised in white society. Much of this happened within living memory.
I heard many complaints to the effect of, ‘I’m not personally responsible, therefore there is no crime.’
If these people, reluctant to take ownership of a society stacked against other races, do indeed feel a spark of guilt at the mention of inequality and privilege, they bury it beneath a mountain of denial and umbrage at an imagined persecution.
There are human beings beneath that armour of enforced ignorance, and I guess that’s the problem.
All too human.

And finally the more upfront has entered the room:

If I were black, I would be THANKFUL that my ancestors were captured and brought to America, even to become slaves, because otherwise,I’ve have been born in the hellhole of Africa, never to be an American citizen, and would be FAR worse off, assuming my ancestors even managed to survive to keep my family’s line going.
“Reparations”? what a joke. They’re LUCKY they are US citizens.

Look, blacks have been receiving reparations since 1963, and their awards only keep getting bigger with every year that passes, so whatever argument Mr. Williamson has against reparations is a moot point.

Some people can ignore a lot if their paycheck depends on it. And if that’s kinda pretty much how they feel deep down. Or not so deep, depending. Money and name recognition. With just a bit of greed thrown in to make things sporty.
110 | Justanotherhuman May 24, 2014 5:14:10am |
Why is it that people who don’t want the govt to be able to “spy” on them (their words—I never really feel “spied” upon except for those CCTV cams which are put up for security purposes, I assume), yet they want to take the latest I-phone or other method of recording others wherever they go? In fact, they think it’s their right to do whatever they wish in public with no repercussions and with no considerations for others or their privacy. I’m more afraid of those types than I am of what they complain about.
I’m so sick of this kind of crap and people who think they’re not bound by any rules, regulations or laws.
Just as I wouldn’t want to dine in a place that allowed guns, neither would I want people using devices that might be filming me, either. Too many people mixing up their perceived “rights” in private places (the property of another) with behaviors that violate the rights of others who might also be there. The law says you can’t refuse to serve someone because you don’t like who they are, not what they do when you do serve them.
The law is not keeping up with technology very well, and I think only the self-absorbed wearing their own Google glasses would want to eat in the same place as others doing the same. They could record each other as much as they wanted, by implied consent, since they’d all be doing it to each other. After all, who would be the first hypocrite to complain?

Australias PM, known to be cozy with climate change deniers, is finally getting his policies in place:
Australian science base eroded by budget cuts
Australia’s research community is reeling from what have been described as short sighted and politically motivated cuts, outlined in the new conservative government’s first budget.
[…]
CSIRO - the largest government research laboratory - faces cuts of A$111.4 million. It will lose 420-500 staff in the next year. Coming on top of 300 previously announced redundancies, this means the organisation will shrink by around 20% in just two years.
[…]
Environment, climate change and renewable energy are all big casualties of the budget - most notably the intended abolition of the Renewable Energy Agency that will save A$1.3 billion, and the A$10 billion Clean Energy Finance Corporation. A$162.9 million will be cut from the Carbon Capture and Storage flagship, and a commitment to 1 million solar roofs has been withdrawn.
Abandoning carbon pricing will cost the Australian treasury A$20 billion, while the mining corporations will get A$13 billion in subsidies through diesel fuel rebates, asset depreciation rules and offsetting the costs of exploration says Victoria McKenzie-McHarg, climate campaign manager at the Australian Conservation Foundation.
From 2016, the university funding model is changing so that universities will be able to decide their own course fees. Universities will have to cover an 8.5% drop in funding compared with what was promised in last year’s budget - and one which already included stringent cutbacks. Changes to the higher education loan programme mean interest rates payable by students taking out the loans will be set at the higher 10 year bond rate, rather than inflation.

Modesty: the quality or state of being unassuming or moderate in the estimation of one’s abilities.
Pretty much going out the window these days when everyone is “the greatest”. People’s ethical underpinnings are what impress me most, not their looks, their money, or anything else which seems to count these days. Maybe it’s a judgment on my part, and we’re not supposed to “judge” and trust any standards, according to those coming up, it seems, but it’s one I’m willing to make. We have enough pathologies going on without all this excessive vanity and narcissism which I think is a real sign of insecurity in a scary world.
Even friendships seem to have entered a kind of “What’s in it for me” phase. I mean, when you’re strapped for cash, experiencing ill health, or some other hardship, you find out who your real friends are, and vice versa.

Good for a Counter Insurgency but dead meat against any real enemy. For mud moving the 23’s are actually not too bad. Hang some rocket pods on those hard points and most will be cowering & looking for cover. But the 21’s & helos are not worth much in the real world.

The Hinds are good enough for the kind of role they are being used in. Ansar-al-Sharia in Benghazi isn’t nearly as good as the pro-Russian forces in Donetsk and provided the helicopters operate with an effective ground force any missileers can be spotted and engaged. Reform is surely needed, but the disaster in Phoenix was not caused by lack of funds, it was caused by dishonest management first and foremost. A great deal of money that could have been used for care of veterans was misappropriated for things like interior decoration.
Structural reform of the DoVA is needed above all, and that Republicans can and should take the lead on. I’ll be back later to discuss how.

Following her retirement from the Army, athletics became a way of life for Ms. Stockwell. She completed multiple triathlons and marathons on an arm crank bike, learned to ski, and became a competitive swimmer and - most recently - a paratriathlete. In April 2008, Ms. Stockwell became the first OIF veteran to qualify for the Paralympics when she earned her spot on the US swim team. In the 2008 Beijing Paralympics, she represented the US in the 100 freestyle, 400 freestyle, and 100 butterfly. She was also selected to carry the American flag in the Beijing closing ceremonies. After Beijing Ms. Stockwell turned to the sport of triathlon. She became part of the 2010 and 2011 paratriathlon national team and won both paratriathlon world championships becoming a two-time world champion. Ms. Stockwell was also named the 2010, 2011, and 2012 paratriathlete of the year.

No, it’s not ‘worth repeating’…it’s a stupid thing to say and is completely irrelevant. Gun laws will reduce the chances of gun violence by reducing the number of guns available, but they will never stop some asshole from taking a weapon and opening fire on a crowd of people.

Not knowing something means you got to hit the books and try to learn it. Oh. We are talking about Creationists. Hmm. Okay let them have that and I will read the books to try to learn it.
Yet, accepting that there such a thing as the ‘unknowable” is a sign of maturity. At some point, I had to accept that I don’t have the time, resources or inclination to master all the subjects I’d like to. In a sense, astrophysics is unknowable to me.
And, really, who can know G-d? By the very definition, a concept so immense, it is beyond the human brain to conceive.

Given the Inflationary cosmological model with infinite universes, the origin of life can be explained through pure chance - what is nearly impossible in a single universe, is inevitable in the infinity of them. That model seems to have been confirmed recently, btw. And if the model with the eternal past is accepted (speculative but logically possible), then the question of the origin of the universe is also answered (namely, there was no ultimate origin as such). Now, these may look like deus ex machina explanations, and at least for the unconfirmed parts (eternal past) they are, but they are at least no worse than the god-explanation.

Iran executes billionaire over $2.6 billion bank fraud
TEHRAN, IRAN—A billionaire businessman at the heart of a $2.6 billion state bank scam, the largest fraud case since the country’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, was executed Saturday, state television reported.
Authorities put Mahafarid Amir Khosravi, also known as Amir Mansour Aria, to death at Evin prison, just north of the capital, Tehran, the station reported. The report said the execution came after Iran’s Supreme Court upheld his death sentence.
Khosravi’s lawyer, Gholam Ali Riahi, was quoted by news website khabaronline.ir as saying that his client was put to death without any notice.

Back in ‘76, while going into my last year of college, I and a couple friends went to Philly for the big Bicentennial celebration on the Fourth of July. We camped at a campgrounds at Valley Forge. Tents and the whole thing. We thought that was a great way to celebrate and really the only place to be on that very day.
I’ll never forget watching the huge fireworks display going on downtown on Saturday night right by Independence Hall.
Had a great time.

Um, maybe not. The Iranian mullahs, military and politicians all run their own private business emprires. Kind of like the KGB does in Russia, they use their government power to steal what they can and crush competing factions. Iran’s criminal justice system and corrupt financial system is not a progressive ideal model.

There aren’t any purity purges inside the Democratic party, though. It’s all outside it.
This is why the magical balance fairy stuff is silly: The Tea Party was accepted and co-opted into the GOP, and successfully moved it a large distance to the right. The radical left is rejected by the Democrats and unable to move it to the left.

We ordered a blue and white spray for my son’s casket, although I don’t know what the flowers were—but most of them were a sort of periwinkle color along with the white ones. We’ve also ordered the ground plaque for his grave which has a standard for that cemetery, so everything is almost finished and it should be in place by July 1. Losing him will never be finished, though, for those of us who loved him.

Transcript
Hi, Elliot Rodger here.
Well… this is my last video. It all has to come to this.
Tomorrow is the day of retribution. The day in which I will have my revenge against humanity. Against all of you.
For the last 8 years of my life, ever since I’ve hit puberty, I’ve been forced to endure an existence of loneliness, rejection, and unfulfilled desires. All because girls have never been attracted to me.
Girls gave their affection, and sex, and love, to other men but never to me.
I’m 22 years old and I’m still a virgin. I’ve never even kissed a girl.
I’ve been through college for two and a half years, more than that actually, and I’m still a virgin.
It has been very torturous.
College is the time when everyone experiences those things such as sex, and fun, and pleasure. But in those years I’ve had to rot in loneliness.
It’s not fair. You girls have never been attracted to me.
I don’t know why you girls aren’t attracted to me, but I will punish you all for it.
It’s an injustice, a crime, because I don’t know what you don’t see in me. I’m the perfect guy, and yet you throw yourselves at all these obnoxious men, instead of me, the supreme gentlemen.
I will punish all of you for it. (laughs)
On the day of retribution I am going to enter the hottest sorority house of UCSB… and I will slaughter every single spoiled, stuck-up, blonde slut I see inside there.
All those girls that I’ve desired so much, they would’ve all rejected me and looked down upon me as an inferior man if I ever made a sexual advance towards them while they throw themselves at these obnoxious brutes.
I will take great pleasure in slaughtering all of you.
You will finally see that I am in truth the superior one. The true alpha male. (laughs)
Yes, after I’ve annihilated every single girl in the sorority house, I’ll take to the streets of Isla Vista, and slay every single person I see there.
All those popular kids who live such lives of hedonistic pleasure while I’ve had to rot in loneliness for all these years, they’ve all looked down upon me every time I try to go out and join them. They’ve all treated me like a mouse.
Well now, I will be a God compared to you. You will all be animals. You are animals, and I will slaughter you like animals. I will be a God, exacting my retribution, on all those who deserve it.
And you do deserve it, just for the crime of living a better life than me.
All you popular kids. You’ve never accepted me, and now you’ll all pay for it.
And girls, all I’ve ever wanted was to love you, and to be loved by you. I’ve wanted a girlfriend, I’ve wanted sex, I’ve wanted love, affection, adoration, but you think I’m unworthy of it.
That’s a crime that can never be forgiven.
If I can’t have you, girls, I will destroy you. (laughs)
You denied me a happy life, and in turn, I will deny all of you life. (laughs) It’s only fair.
I hate all of you, humanity is a disgusting, wretched, depraved species. If I had it in my power, I would stop at nothing, to reduce every single one of you to mountains of skulls and rivers of blood, and rightfully so.
You deserve to be annihilated. And I’ll give that to you.
You never showed me any mercy, and so I will show you none. (laughs)
You force me to suffer all my life, and now I’ll make you all suffer.
I’ve waited a long time for this.
I’ll give you exactly what you deserve.

The lilacs here in the mid west used to be very beautiful. Global warming has reduced them to twiggy shrubs with few flowers. Sad. Remember when you could walk down the street and the bushes would make the whole block smell like lilacs?

I wouldn’t give them the dignity of saying their celibacy is “involuntary”. It’s solely because they are so arrogant that they feel they deserve the hottest woman in the room. If they set realistic standards for themselves instead of wallowing in the indignity of getting rejected by someone who is clearly out of their league, maybe they wouldn’t be going home alone every night.

I googled Asperger’s Syndrome…
“a developmental disorder related to autism and characterized by higher than average intellectual ability coupled with impaired social skills and restrictive, repetitive patterns of interest and activities.”
That sounds like me when I was younger, but I did do well in school, always made As. I was painfully shy as a child (my mother’s death didn’t help) and not well adjusted socially until I reached my 30s. One therapist called me “sociopathic” and I never quite understood why, unless it was my politics, but it was my politics which opened my eyes to a greater understanding of my position as a woman. I didn’t have much use for therapists after that.
I think people are all different and often wonder why we can’t accept those differences in personalities and eccentricities when they are not threatening or harmful to oneself or others. But who determines that?

Another internet outrage that’s done gone over my head. Perhaps someone could explain it to me.
A friend of mine survived Dachau. After the war she married a gentleman who escaped a train heading there on which he had met her parents, who asked him to look her up and look out for her after the shit was over (and he did; he was as tough a bird as she was). They worked the black market in eastern Europe for a few years before immigrating to Peekskill, NY, where they actively supported the civil rights movement. The reason I bring it up is they never bragged about it. It was just a given to them to demand fair play for all.
My Irish Catholic grandparents all came from Montreal sans papers and in due course became US citizens. As far as I know, there were no torch wielding mobs demanding they be thrown out of Worcester, Massachusetts for being here illegally.
Like I said, perhaps someone could explain it to me.

re: #320 wrenchwench
It’s not outrageous to note that white people have privilege in the US, even when they are survivors of a concentration camp.
Indeed. Touré—who I’d never heard of before this thread—was clearly not attributing Holocaust survival to the “power of whiteness” as the Mediaite article disingenuously states, he was referring to their ability to “pass” once in the U.S.
But, hey, click bait outrage is what it’s all about these days. Funny that those who so vociferously bemoan the tactic are also guilty of promoting it, huh?
Anyone who claims that immigrants who could “pass” didn’t benefit from doing so is either lying or stupid. This would’ve been especially true for Jews, who have dealt with antisemitism for thousands of years. Who has never met anyone whose family’s Jewish/Italian/Polish/whatever surname wasn’t changed at some point to make it sound more WASP-ish? Precious few I would think, at least from the baby boomer generation.
Oh, and the U.S. governement backs me up on the name change thing:
Despite these facts, the Ellis-Island-name-change-story (or Castle Garden, or earlier versions of the same story) is as American as apple pie (and probably as common in Canada too, eh?). Why?
The explanation lies in ideas as simple as language and cultural differences, and as complex as the root of American culture. We all know names have been Anglicized in America (even the word “Anglicized” has been Americanized!). As any kindergartener learns, we live in a world where people ask our name then write it down without asking us how to spell or pronounce that name. Once in America, immigrants were typically asked their name and entered into official records by those who had “made it” in America and thus were already English-speaking (i.e., teachers, landlords, employers, judges etc.). The fact that those with the power to create official records were English-speaking explains much about small changes, over time, in the spelling of certain names.
Many immigrants welcomed this change. Anyone from Eastern Europe, with a name long on consonants and short on vowels, learned that his name often got in the way of a job interview or became the subject of ridicule at his child’s school. Any change that might smooth their way to the American dream was seen as a step in the right direction. Perhaps this was the case with Mr. Smiley. It was the case of another family from Russia, named Smiloff or Smilikoff, who emigrated to Canada at the turn of the century. By the time their son immigrated from Canada to the US in 1911, his name had become Smiley. […]

re: #326 CuriousLurker
P.S. Also see the 1947 film Gentleman’s Agreement, which was considered quite controversial for its time because it dealt with antisemitism. The main character, a gentile journalist (Gregory Peck), goes “undercover” as a Jew to gather info for an article on antisemitism.
Oh, and:
Production
Zanuck decided to make a film version of Hobson’s novel after being refused membership in the Los Angeles Country Club, because it was assumed incorrectly that he was Jewish. Before filming commenced, Samuel Goldwyn and other Jewish film executives approached Darryl Zanuck and asked him not to make the film, fearing it would “stir up trouble”. They also warned that Hays Code enforcer, Joseph Breen, might not allow the film to pass the censors, as he had been known to make disparaging remarks about Jews. There was also concern that Dorothy McGuire’s character’s being divorced would offend the National Legion of Decency.
So, yeah, in post-WWII America there were distinct benefits for Jews who could “pass”, and disadvantages for any gentile mistakenly assumed to be Jewish.

Yep, they sure are. If you’d asked me if I could imagine it six years ago I’d have said “no”, but nowadays it doesn’t seem so farfetched.
BTW, the very next paragraph on the Wiki page:
The political nature of the film, however, upset the House Un-American Activities Committee, with Elia Kazan, Darryl Zanuck, John Garfield, and Anne Revere all being called to testify before the committee.
Eerie similarities, huh? Especially since the House is where most of the TPers are. I guess on the Senate side Ted Cruz would be McCarthy—creepy how much they look alike, innit? McCarthy looked way more like he could’ve been Cruz’s dad than the actual real one.
