Ebola Doc Craig Spencer Now Free of the Virus, Will Be Released From Hospital

Another success for US health care
Health • Views: 64,011

We’ve been following the case of Dr. Craig Spencer with interest, since he’s the only remaining confirmed Ebola patient in the US — or he was the only confirmed Ebola patient until today, when it was reported Dr. Spencer is now completely free of the virus and will be leaving New York’s Bellevue Hospital tomorrow.

New York (CNN) — Dr. Craig Spencer, who was diagnosed with Ebola in New York City last month after returning from treating patients in Guinea, is now free of the virus and will be released from the hospital Tuesday, a city official familiar with the doctor’s treatment said Monday.

Think about this for a second. Most of the media is either directly owned or operates through major telecom companies. In other words, by this time next week, promoting net neutrality will be akin to Nazism.

Teh Jeb has quite a bit of baggage, doeesn’t he? The Bush name, for one (43’s tenure hasn’t been quite rehabbed yet), his wife’s and kids’ problems (though they could be ignored or swept under the rug). Not sure if he would want to undergo all the scrutiny.

And he may be a little too culturally “liberal” for the RWNJs who probably will field the same loons they have before.

When the Civil Rights Act became law in 1964 I wasn’t naive enough to think that it would end racism in America. I was naive enough to believe that over time it would become so déclassé that open demonstrations of it would be rare and looked down upon. Being a lame duck president who has been all but abandoned by his party has an upside. Since he has nothing to lose, he can now start acting like the guy we thought we elected, and there’s nothing the GOP can do to stop him.

In fact, if he’s really cleaver about it, when the GOP tries impeaching him it could actually piss off a large part of the country because he would now be trying to do things for them.

They’re likely going to argue that, if they can’t charge existing customers more for the same service, then they’ll have to charge new customers more to make up the difference. Because, as you know, it’s massively expensive to move data through glass cable. They have to virtually hand deliver those bits to your door.

Holy shit. I get the argument against net neutrality in terms of profit motive (I don’t agree with it, but I understand why ISP’s would be against it), but preventing price gouging on content will lead to higher prices? What in the ever living fuck?

It’s along the same lines as why cable companies “can’t” provide ala carte channel access: Because they can’t make the higher margins on the crap content, they’ll have to charge more in order to continue reaping their billions.

NASHVILLE — Ten Republican members of Tennessee’s General Assembly believe having broadband Internet is important as having electricity.

They’re supporting a bill that would allow public utilities that offer cable and Internet to expand into rural areas, despite criticism from tea partiers and at least one private Internet provider.

My choices are better. I can choose 3 Mb/s ATT DSL for $50 per month, or I can choose 50 Mb/s Charter cable for $60 per month.

Of course, once Comcast swallows Time Warner, Charter goes away and DSL may end up the better choice.

We have Frontier Internet that just put a data center in our town recently. They charge prices competitive to Comcast, but more importantly, they don’t have a bandwidth cap. If I ever start getting anywhere near Comcast’s cap, I will switch in a heartbeat.

We don’t intend to. I’ve had it before. Right after dial-up. Wasn’t much better then. Although it may have improved, we get good speed w/Charter, although there are frequent outages and their service and line maintenance are pretty crummy.

Yeah, we have to pay for TV and phone, too (I insist on having a house phone since I’m here most of the time). The entire pkg is $110 and I hate paying it, but such is the cost in 2014. In 1969, I paid less than $5 for a house phone, nothing for TV except the set, and we didn’t have internet, of course.

135 ObserverArt  Nov 10, 2014 5:18:27pm

Good news for doctor Craig Spencer.

Anyone remember the first week that Ebola came to America in Dallas?

Some of the discussion on this blog/forum was that at best we could expect a 90% death rate. Some said with proper care and treatments it would be 50-60%. There was some pretty good back and forth and I think even a little heated that it was 90% and that was the way it was.

Glad that we were all mostly wrong. And I guess that 50-60% weren’t so pie-in-the-sky after all. And thankfully no where near the scary 90%.

Part 2 - Ted and Daddy Cruz. The more I watch these two the more I think they are just grifting, one through politics tinged with religion and one through religion steeped in politics.

When you get down to it, they both seem to be in it for the money. I don’t think either one of them is all that damn serious in their actual positions but the power and the money of those positions surely interests. I get the feeling they even use and rely on each other to help create and feed the narratives. Since they are so popular with the wingnuts both are followed.

There was video of Ted spewing his BS after the election last week. He was making all kinds of pronouncement about Obamacare, illegality and lawlessness and the usual crap. And after every line he uttered, he had that goofy self-satisfied smile. Its just creepy, and it sure does make him look like he knows all he is doing is shoveling red meat cuttings to the masses and they eat it up. He makes used car salesmen look good.

137 lawhawk  Nov 10, 2014 5:19:39pm

Well, I’m not particularly surprised that Dr. Spencer has been treated and will now be released after having Ebola. He got the best that modern medicine can offer - in modern and highly controlled environments. So far, no one else he’s come into contact has themselves gotten infected, which says a lot about infection control and what that means to getting the disease under control.

It also speaks volumes on how to stop the disease epidemic in Africa. It means getting the same levels of tech, gear, and supportive therapies to Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea so that the patients who are diagnosed with the disease are given a fighting chance.

Clearly there’s something beneficial to getting timely treatment in a modern facility. That’s also clearly lacking in the affected countries, so the mortality rate can be brought down significantly with the right level of supportive treatments, gear, and health care workers following infection control protocols with the proper support (IOW - not having to reuse or ration PPE for only the worst cases).

If the health care workers over there can get the right kind of support, they will gain the trust of the people there who are scared to even consider bringing loved ones to the hospitals and treatment centers for fear they’ll never see them again.

Give them a fighting chance. Except that means giving money and putting personnel in harms’ way in a place that few know where to find on a map - and there’s nothing gotten in return (except the termination of a horrible epidemic before it spreads much further and limits potential exposures and secondary cases outside the hot zone - like in the US).

re: #135 ObserverArt

Yeah, there was a lot of discussion about how good the odds of survival was once you got diagnosis. It does now seem that prompt diagnosis and treatment at a modern facility greatly improves the survival odds.

It’s a solid hypothesis that should be tested in the field in Africa to see if it is truly what is behind the success. Or is there some particular treatment or supportive care involved that those in Africa aren’t getting (or enough aren’t getting). The health care system in the affected African countries is hanging on by a thread in the best of times, and this epidemic has decimated what was already in shambles.

The sooner they can get the necessary PPE gear and supportive treatments over there, the better.

Let me rephrase that for the GOP knuckle draggers.

It’s preemptive targeting of a mortal peril to the US to eliminate Ebola there, so that it doesn’t come here. We can spend billions on bombing far off countries; the least we can do is spend even a fraction of that amount on stopping the Ebola epidemic (and in the process further pharmaceutical research on tropical diseases).

re: #154 BeenHereAwhile

Chattanooga already has local utility fiber internet.

IIRC, 1 Gbps for approx $60/month.

The issue is that TN law prohibits muni/public utility broadband service from being offered outside of the primary service footprint of said utility. So, if you can’t get electric service from, for example, Chattanooga’s EPB or the Tullahoma Utility Board, they can’t offer their fiber service to you, even if they wanted to expand just that (and they do).

At one point Chuck must have had dreams of being taken seriously by right wingers as a (pseudo) academic…along the lines of David Barton. Why the fuck else would anyone write a biography about the most boring president in US history?

Now he’s happy to be a younger Breitbart, a loud showman titillating the right by letting them vicariously say “fuck you” to all liberals. No real debate, just vitriol. Calling Loretta Lynch a bitch on Twitter, as Chuck just did, is beneath even most of the low lifes on talk/fear radio, FoxNews, Weekly Standard, etc. (I don’t even think NRO gets down quite that far in the gutter. Number of billionaires doubles since financial crisis as inequality spirals out of control

oxfam.org

“In countries around the world, prosperity is not trickling down to ordinary people, but up to those at the top, whose exceptional wealth is growing ever more rapidly. The richest 85 people - who Oxfam revealed in January as having the same wealth as the poorest half of the world’s population (3) - saw their collective wealth increase by $668 million per day between 2013 and 2014. That’s almost half a million dollars every minute. (4)

Worldwide personalities talk about tackling extreme inequality

“From the IMF to the Pope, from President Obama to the World Economic Forum, there is a growing consensus that inequality is a crucial challenge of our time and that failure to act is both economically and socially damaging. Despite the warm words, little action has materialised. ” More

No school tomorrow so we can sleep in here in NC. It’s Veterans Day, and it’s been reported that up to 1,000 (out of around 300K employees) at the VA could lose their job over the incompetence and lack of attention given to veterans in the recent shakeup. The VA is the second largest bureaucracy in the US govt, second only to the Defense Dept. Equally sad is that so many veterans are coming home to un- or under-employment and stagnant wages, earning less than they did in the military (and w/little to no benefits).

That’s not quite what they said. I thought it was a mostly reasonable article about how opioids should be used sparingly and other painkillers and other ways to deal with pain should be explored. My only gripe was recommending acupuncture, which does not have good science-based results behind it.

Funny story: My father (RIP) once had some dental work done about 15 years ago. I was visiting for Christmas and one of his cheeks was swollen and he was in obvious discomfort. “Dad,” I said, “didn’t they give you something for the pain?” Well yes, they’d given him Tylenol with codeine, but, as he said to me, “Nobody should feel that good.” He refused to take them.

re: #260 Vicious Piebola

That’s…not what that story says. At all. It’s saying that opiates have a much lower risk/benefit ratio for chronic non-cancer pain than people think and should be used with much, much greater caution than they currently are.

Really, I understand why the cables are freaking out. Their model is based on the assumption that broadcast’s 13 or 14 channel world was replaced by the 500 channel cable. I myself want one channel: whatever you can search for on the various video clouds run by the production companies. They can choose to pay for themselves with ads and give you free content, or subscriptions, or buying single movies and such for things you want to own. What’s a “channel”? A way of giving the cables or satellites ownership over the shows they offer. Nuts. Make them networks that offer the internet to their subscribers. Or if you’re nuts, buy a whole Kardashian series for binge walker. Broadcast? Perfectly fine over the air. Channels are bit of limited bandwith you can tune to with what’s called a TV set. They used to do that a lot in the old days. I want access to the world’s content. Don’t you?

What a crock of shit that article was. I doubt he’s ever met Tim Scott. The giant strawman—If Tim Scott speaks in terms of a distinctly black conservatism

Clue #1—he doesn’t. He speaks far right-wing bullshit like the rest of the Republicans in South Carolina. And the reason he is unpopular with actual black voters, is because he’s a right-wing asshole.

I laughed out loud at his hands-off approach to racial injustice. Hands off, indeed. He totally ignores it would be a better way to describe it.

Scott doesn’t care what black people think; he doesn’t care what women think; he doesn’t really care what his constituents think, unless they’re rich, white Republicans.

Ugh—Thanks for posting this—I needed a good laugh.

A bit of oversimplification to what they are saying in the article. I think that the thrust of this article was homing on the fact that opioid prescriptions have literally exploded during the last decade, and are among the most over-prescribed or misprescribed medications in recent history. Oxycodone (OxyContin) prescriptions went up somewhere around the order of 400% over a six-year period starting around 2003 when Perdue Pharmaceuticals started a major marketing campaign which essentially represented the drug as non-addictive.
The level of overprescription that physicians have given it reminds me of Quaaludes in the 1970s and Valium in the 1980s as the prescription drugs of choice for abuse. Problem is, opioids are FAR more dangerous as death by overdose (either accidental or deliberate) is a very real issue.

I’ve lost more than a few friends to this. Young guys, too (they were all men).

My dear friend David, who died about four years ago of a (legal) drug overdose, became addicted to pain killers after a botched back surgery. In a lot of ways it wasn’t his fault that he died. But he died anyway, leaving behind a teenage daughter and scores of friends and family.

I’ve seen a lot of people fall in and out of pain killer addiction. At its crux it’s one of the scariest things to deal with. I had a roommate who was addicted to pain killers (again, because of a botched surgery) and I watched the guy not eat for days on end and descend into absolute madness. One morning I found him convulsing on the floor naked in the kitchen and all the cabinet doors were open and all of the burners on the stove were lit.

That gentleman lived to tell the tale, and he’s drug free today. But goddamnit I’ve seen how destructive legally prescribed pain killers can be. I wouldn’t wish my friend David’s fate on my worst enemy.

Oxycodone (OxyContin) prescriptions went up somewhere around the order of 400% over a six-year period starting around 2003 when Perdue Pharmaceuticals started a major marketing campaign which essentially represented the drug as non-addictive.

Last night, on CNN’s “Parts Unknown”, Anthony Bourdain visited Greenfield, MA, a town in western MA which has a growing heroin problem.

Bourdain pointed out that Greenfield isn’t the only town of its kind, as heroin has gone from a drug problem largely seen in poorer, urban neighborhoods to a highly visible issue just as easily suffered by middle or upper class individuals and those living in otherwise wholesome looking small American towns. He points to an increased use of prescription opioid pain-killers like OxyContin, which were originally proclaimed as non-addictive, as a possible reason for the increase in heroin use.

A local family doctor backed up Bourdain’s claims about prescription medication saying that, while there is no one place or person who holds all the blame, “there is an awful lot of money to be made by promoting the treatment of pain to the highest level … I was taught in residency you give people as much pain medicine as they need. You get them out of pain. We will judge your hospital, we’ll judge your emergency room, based on your pain scores.”

When you’ve got few treatment options, and a broken medical system, the mortality rates are 70-90%. But those chance vastly improve in a modern facility.

Not trying to excuse any mistakes made in Dallas, but I can never get a bead on this part of the story.

Not so much. “Here’s some antibiotics” (for a viral infection!) “and go away.”

Maybe modern American capitalism, based on short-term profit instead of the public good, isn’t ideally suited for medical care. OT, I know, but I think it should be noted:

The government accounting office here in Sweden has had a look at the reforms for healthcare providers, which were pushed under the aegis of “freedom of choice.”
The reforms basically made it much easier for private enterprises to establishe themselves and to buy old goverment clinics.
Oh, the effect? The healthy and the rich have been those who benefited the most, while the sick and poor have actually lost on the whole deal.
And no, this isn’t politicized, the accounting office began the review more than a year ago, during the last — conservative-led — administration.
The former social secretary Göran Hägglund, responsible for the reforms, has not been available for comments.

In honor of those who are currently serving, and to those who have served. All gave some. Some gave all. My respects, courtesy of Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918), who wrote In Flanders Fields during WWI.

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the guns finally fell silent…

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Just missed the start of session in Austin (was there last week). But it seems that significant numbers of Southerners deny the reason that the Civil War (aka the War of Southern Secession to Preserve Slavery) was fought. And they’re not above trying to deny the reality that federal law and federalism permits the federal government to act as it does.

This guy, and many like him, want to refight the civil rights movement, among others. They’re stuck on stupid, and you’d think that being paid minimum wage to work in the legislature might mean compassion might rub off on a few of these part-time legislators, but instead it brings out even more nuttiness and miscreants who ignore that their policies are depriving ever more people of a living wage.

Medicare Proposes Paying for Lung Cancer Screenings for Older Longtime Smokers

WASHINGTON — Medicare will cover annual screenings for lung cancer for older Americans with long histories of heavy smoking, the federal government said Monday in a proposal that would cover an estimated four million people, many of whom are at greatest risk for the disease.

Monday’s draft decision by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services would extend coverage for CT scans to Medicare beneficiaries who smoked at least a pack a day for 30 years or the equivalent, even if they quit as long as 15 years ago. Scans would cost recipients nothing; the coverage would apply to beneficiaries through age 74.

I prefer to remember that war by this man’s thoughts instead…

Dulce Et Decorum Est

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of disappointed shells that dropped behind.

GAS! Gas! Quick, boys!— An ecstasy of fumbling,
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time;
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And floundering like a man in fire or lime.—
Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,—
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.

So what have the Democrats been up to lately?

So, naturally, the kidz went in search of the party’s “centrist” intelligentsia because the most important thing in Washington now is to find enough Democrats who will go along with Republican ideas so everybody can “get along” and “gridlock” will end and the dinner parties and cocktail hours won’t be so uncomfortable. So, come on down, Joe Manchin (D-Anthracite), and Heidi Heitkamp (D-GunsNAmmo), the maitre d’s of the Appomattox Bar And Grille.

…..

But already, a host of red-state Democrats signal a willingness to cut some deals with the GOP on the initial items atop their agenda. Donnelly wants to repeal the Affordable Care Act’s medical device tax and restore the full-time workweek of 40 hours under the law, two major GOP priorities. Several senators - like Manchin, Heitkamp, Donnelly and McCaskill - want to move forward on the Keystone XL oil pipeline. And Sen. Angus King (I-Maine) said he is pushing for three bipartisan bills - including overhauls of regulations, student loans, and parental and medical leave - that he hopes will get attention in the GOP Senate.

So it sounds like we can add another half dozen “Democrats” to the Republican side of the aisle next year.

More magnificent words have rarely been spoken about the dead - especially considering that it was Mustafa Kemal who was the ANZAC’s foe in that ill-fated campaign.

Those heroes that shed their blood
And lost their lives…
You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country.
Therefore rest in peace.
There is no difference between the Johnnies
And the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side
Here in this country of ours…
You, the mothers,
Who sent their sons from far away countries
Wipe away your tears,
Your sons are now lying in our bosom
And are in peace
After having lost their lives on this land
They have become our sons as well

Where mathematics meets mayhem: An operations research report on 3 months of 8th Air Force casualties. It’s much too long to read, but note the detailed approach. (At this time an aircrewman had a 1% chance of being KIA/MIA on each combat flight. The required tour was 25 missions.)

Manchin: I Won’t Put Up With ‘Bulls**t’ If Dems Try To Obstruct GOP

Translation: “I, for one, welcome our new Republcian overlords.”

It should be noted that an earlier article in TPM flagged Manchin and Claire McCaskill as two of the six Democratic senators most likely to stab Obama in the back over the next two years.

Not that I want obstruction, but I get feeling that the good Senator here is going to roll over for tummy rubs every time the GOP looks at him cross-eyed.

Asshole.

Funny Joe, you didn’t say anything when the GOP was actually obstructing the Dems. What a pathetic coward Manchin is. Really with “friends” like this, does Obama really even need enemies?

I’d like us to actually put a little more than just symbolism behind appreciating our veterans. Policies to help those especially those who saw combat to readjust upon their return from war. I don’t know if a condition like PTSD is curable but it is treatable and we owe our veterans that much instead of trying to claim we’re more patriotic than thou.

Here’s what’s upsetting to me about the Democratic Party. They lose in a big way and their first thought is “How can we give into the Republicans?” and as I said I get it somewhat and understand they can’t sound too partisan. However, with Republicans, defeat means being even more partisan and obstructionist to the Democrats and President. I guess what I mean is I don’t want to ever hear how the Dems are “just as bad” as the GOP when you have one party that is actually accommodating after defeat and another that doubles down on the same old shit after defeat.

Impeachment requires 67 votes to convict, so even with six turncoats, Republicans would still need 7 others in an election year that favors the DNC to join them in the President.

I’d like them to actually answer this simple question. I’ll acknowledge that Republicans did support the CRA of ‘64 and that indeed many Democrats opposed but I want them to answer this: That if the Republican Party were so committed to the Civil Rights, then why would they nominate an opponent of the legislation for president? And why did Nixon run to the right of Nixon circa 1960 on Civil Rights and furthermore why was “Saint Reagan” more closer to George Wallace than MLK on Civil Rights. I’ll never get an answer I know because they actually believe that LBJ was “the real racist” even though for all his warts, no president in the 20th century did more on civil rights.

I like though how according to the dimwits on TCOT we’re supposed to assume that the Democratic Party of the 1870’s is the same as the Democratic Party of today even though an openly white supremacist party would never nominate someone like Barack Obama for any office let alone the presidency but yet we’re supposed to ignore the GOP’s actions in the 60’s, 70’,s, and 80’s that are still done today. And calling the KKK liberals is the most pathetic joke of all time. Tell the Klan they were liberals and they’d laugh at you. The klan hated and still does hate liberals.

Ongoing GOP efforts at voter suppression are also a big part of this.

Mehlman’s admission is about 0.1% of what the GOP needs to do to get on the right side of this issue.

The reality is that after the civil rights bills passed in the 60s, the GOP had a choice. They could have said to the disgruntled racists bolting from the Democrats “we’re happy to have your votes, but we aren’t going to change our candidates and platforms to cater to your unjustified grievances”.

This is not the path that was taken.

To try to fix it now, the GOP would somehow have to purge the racists and neo-Confederates from its ranks, which would appear to be impossible.

Precisely. Nailed it.

He’s been taking a break (and active on Twitter) but has made noises about coming back at some point.

I’d rather he take a break and come back refreshed than get wound up to the point that he considers a flounce (or equivalent thereof.)

I take it as a back handed compliment. And it actually shows more about McCain than it does Lynch. Condescension drips from McCain’s statement.

Yep. Lots of pretty words - but nothing regarding her qualifications for being AG.

I had posted on here a couple of Veteran’s Days ago (or maybe last year) the following picture:
Bomber maintenance crew

I had remarked at the time that I knew little more. My mother was a little more forthcoming this Veteran’s Day; this picture was taken somewhere in England. My mother’s father served as a Tech Sergeant in the US Army Air Force in Europe. I’m told that my father’s father fought in France, but I have yet to uncover any evidence of this being the case. I may have to ask about that when I go home to fish country the weekend after next.

Then thanks for reposting. I missed the first…

If the Texas Republican Party did that kind of purge, 60% of the state’s population would disappear. This is not a new phenomenon here. In 1928, Texas went for the Republican Herbert Hoover (gasp!) in the Prez race because they couldn’t vote for that Papist Al Smith.

Seriously, it’s amazing how far a Hitler apologist like Buchanan got in GOP circles. I mean we’re talking about someone who actually believes that Germany was not the aggressor in WWII.

Well, at an abstract level how is Germany’s approach in the late 30s that different from GOP negotiations with the Democrats? “I just want X and we’ll have peace. Now just give me Y and things will be peachy.” etc. etc.

496 HappyWarrior  Nov 11, 2014 10:51:25am

The Southern Strategy I think had another non racial consequence that I don’t think gets talked about. Before the 60’s, there really was a consensus in American society about government. Policies like reasonable wages, benefits, etc were pretty much accepted. But when the Great Society and with it the Civil Rights Movement was going to make those benefits for all not just whites. The idea that “big government” was taking away “liberty” took hold. Now to be fair, there was always that mindset on the old right that hated the post WWII consensus regardless but for the majority of American people, it was something agreed on. The Southern Strategy fed the myth that still persists to this day that “Government is the problem.” It’s why you paradoxically see areas that benefit and could benefit from strong social welfare programs supporting Republicans. The culture war also applies here too since GOP candidates have convinced many less off voters that hating gays or the idea of women having the right to choose is a bigger horror than having the government cut programs that could and do benefit them.

I think pharmacies are rejecting all scripts for people who are not regular customers. I used to get my meds from Express Scripts (Medco) but with the new regs they can’t fill them any more.

So I am basically SOL.

In that case, I like the scenery from the bridge rather than the tunnel. Good luck.

The Germans in the 1930s promised peace after each concession, while the US GOP is not so weak-willed as to even lie about a promised peace.

Heh. One of the things I loved about the film Watchmen was this little nugget from Adrian Veidt - aka Ozymandias;

I laughed out loud at that line. Brilliant.

That was one of the main reasons I liked _Watchmen_ so much. It set a whole bunch of what I thought were the common comic books tropes on their heads. (Note: I am not a comic book buyer/reader, so I might not have a “true” grasp of what those tropes should be.)

It’s basically a deconstructionist look at comic-book archetypes. Like the masked vigilante (ie, Batman) who in Watchmen is best typified by Rorschach, who is arguably insane, and at the very least, profoundly mentally and emotionally disturbed.

A bit late, but I always considered Rorschach to be the only sane character in Watchmen.
