Ebola Doc Craig Spencer Now Free of the Virus, Will Be Released From Hospital

We’ve been following the case of Dr. Craig Spencer with interest, since he’s the only remaining confirmed Ebola patient in the US — or he was the only confirmed Ebola patient until today, when it was reported Dr. Spencer is now completely free of the virus and will be leaving New York’s Bellevue Hospital tomorrow.

New York (CNN) — Dr. Craig Spencer, who was diagnosed with Ebola in New York City last month after returning from treating patients in Guinea, is now free of the virus and will be released from the hospital Tuesday, a city official familiar with the doctor’s treatment said Monday.

I was really upset to learn that Kaci Hickox and her boyfriend are leaving Maine due to the threats they have received. He had to withdraw from nursing school in Fort Kent because he wasn’t confident that the university was able to protect his safety.

We just officially went from IE8 to IE9 this year. For other than the company intranet I’ve been running Firefox on my laptop for the last couple of years. One advantage of working in IT and having a few favors owed me by the guys who do the local support.

They’ve been talking about upgrading to IE10. “Unofficially”, we’ve begun supporting Chrome for our brand new intranet application, because the toolkit we picked has a lovely bug that is specific to IE8 (and thus unlikely to be fixed).

And one of the things they kept telling us to emphasize was how it was “individual,” that you weren’t sharing your bandwidth with your neighbors and how it would never slow down like Cox broadband did in the evening hours.

My choices are better. I can choose 3 Mb/s ATT DSL for $50 per month, or I can choose 50 Mb/s Charter cable for $60 per month.

Of course, once Comcast swallows Time Warner, Charter goes away and DSL may end up the better choice.

We have Frontier Internet that just put a data center in our town recently. They charge prices competitive to Comcast, but more importantly, they don’t have a bandwidth cap. If I ever start getting anywhere near Comcast’s cap, I will switch in a heartbeat.

We don’t intend to. I’ve had it before. Right after dial-up. Wasn’t much better then. Although it may have improved, we get good speed w/Charter, although there are frequent outages and their service and line maintenance are pretty crummy.

Yeah, we have to pay for TV and phone, too (I insist on having a house phone since I’m here most of the time). The entire pkg is $110 and I hate paying it, but such is the cost in 2014. In 1969, I paid less than $5 for a house phone, nothing for TV except the set, and we didn’t have internet, of course. OTOH, I was also only making $100/wk—still, that was only a little less than half of what my SS is.

Anyone remember the first week that Ebola came to America in Dallas?

Some of the discussion on this blog/forum was that at best we could expect a 90% death rate. Some said with proper care and treatments it would be 50-60%. There was some pretty good back and forth and I think even a little heated that it was 90% and that was the way it was.

Glad that we were all mostly wrong. And I guess that 50-60% weren’t so pie-in-the-sky after all. And thankfully no where near the scary 90%.

Part 2 - Ted and Daddy Cruz. The more I watch these two the more I think they are just grifting, one through politics tinged with religion and one through religion steeped in politics.

When you get down to it, they both seem to be in it for the money. I don’t think either one of them is all that damn serious in their actual positions but the power and the money of those positions surely interests. I get the feeling they even use and rely on each other to help create and feed the narratives. Since they are so popular with the wingnuts both are followed.

There was video of Ted spewing his BS after the election last week. He was making all kinds of pronouncement about Obamacare, illegality and lawlessness and the usual crap. And after every line he uttered, he had that goofy self-satisfied smile. Its just creepy, and it sure does make him look like he knows all he is doing is shoveling red meat cuttings to the masses and they eat it up. He makes used car salesmen look good.

Well, I’m not particularly surprised that Dr. Spencer has been treated and will now be released after having Ebola. He got the best that modern medicine can offer - in modern and highly controlled environments. So far, no one else he’s come into contact has themselves gotten infected, which says a lot about infection control and what that means to getting the disease under control.

It also speaks volumes on how to stop the disease epidemic in Africa. It means getting the same levels of tech, gear, and supportive therapies to Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea so that the patients who are diagnosed with the disease are given a fighting chance.

Clearly there’s something beneficial to getting timely treatment in a modern facility. That’s also clearly lacking in the affected countries, so the mortality rate can be brought down significantly with the right level of supportive treatments, gear, and health care workers following infection control protocols with the proper support (IOW - not having to reuse or ration PPE for only the worst cases).

If the health care workers over there can get the right kind of support, they will gain the trust of the people there who are scared to even consider bringing loved ones to the hospitals and treatment centers for fear they’ll never see them again.

Give them a fighting chance. Except that means giving money and putting personnel in harms’ way in a place that few know where to find on a map - and there’s nothing gotten in return (except the termination of a horrible epidemic before it spreads much further and limits potential exposures and secondary cases outside the hot zone - like in the US).

Yeah, there was a lot of discussion about how good the odds of survival was once you got diagnosis. It does now seem that prompt diagnosis and treatment at a modern facility greatly improves the survival odds.

It’s a solid hypothesis that should be tested in the field in Africa to see if it is truly what is behind the success. Or is there some particular treatment or supportive care involved that those in Africa aren’t getting (or enough aren’t getting). The health care system in the affected African countries is hanging on by a thread in the best of times, and this epidemic has decimated what was already in shambles.

The sooner they can get the necessary PPE gear and supportive treatments over there, the better.

CBSNews this evening did a report on how they basically shut down Beijing, and other parts of the country, to assure beautiful blue skies for the conference. Place looked really pretty today.

Rachel did a good segment on it last week, showing the runners at the marathon wearing breathing devices and going over all the closings to make the air somewhat breathable during the conference.

Chattanooga already has local utility fiber internet.

IIRC, 1 Gbps for approx $60/month.

The issue is that TN law prohibits muni/public utility broadband service from being offered outside of the primary service footprint of said utility. So, if you can’t get electric service from, for example, Chattanooga’s EPB or the Tullahoma Utility Board, they can’t offer their fiber service to you, even if they wanted to expand just that (and they do).

That’s not quite what they said. I thought it was a mostly reasonable article about how opioids should be used sparingly and other painkillers and other ways to deal with pain should be explored. My only gripe was recommending acupuncture, which does not have good science-based results behind it.

Funny story: My father (RIP) once had some dental work done about 15 years ago. I was visiting for Christmas and one of his cheeks was swollen and he was in obvious discomfort. “Dad,” I said, “didn’t they give you something for the pain?” Well yes, they’d given him Tylenol with codeine, but, as he said to me, “Nobody should feel that good.” He refused to take them.

Really, I understand why the cables are freaking out. Their model is based on the assumption that broadcast’s 13 or 14 channel world was replaced by the 500 channel cable. I myself want one channel: whatever you can search for on the various video clouds run by the production companies. They can choose to pay for themselves with ads and give you free content, or subscriptions, or buying single movies and such for things you want to own. What’s a “channel”? A way of giving the cables or satellites ownership over the shows they offer. Nuts. Make them networks that offer the internet to their subscribers. Or if you’re nuts, buy a whole Kardashian series for binge walker. Broadcast? Perfectly fine over the air. Channels are bit of limited bandwith you can tune to with what’s called a TV set. A bit of oversimplification to what they are saying in the article. I think that the thrust of this article was homing on the fact that opioid prescriptions have literally exploded during the last decade, and are among the most over-prescribed or misprescribed medications in recent history. Oxycodone (OxyContin) prescriptions went up somewhere around the order of 400% over a six-year period starting around 2003 when Perdue Pharmaceuticals started a major marketing campaign which essentially represented the drug as non-addictive.
The level of overprescription that physicians have given it reminds me of Quaaludes in the 1970s and Valium in the 1980s as the prescription drugs of choice for abuse. Problem is, opioids are FAR more dangerous as death by overdose (either accidental or deliberate) is a very real issue.

I’ve lost more than a few friends to this. Young guys, too (they were all men).

My dear friend David, who died about four years ago of a (legal) drug overdose, became addicted to pain killers after a botched back surgery. In a lot of ways it wasn’t his fault that he died. But he died anyway, leaving behind a teenage daughter and scores of friends and family.

I’ve seen a lot of people fall in and out of pain killer addiction. At its crux it’s one of the scariest things to deal with. I had a roommate who was addicted to pain killers (again, because of a botched surgery) and I watched the guy not eat for days on end and descend into absolute madness. One morning I found him convulsing on the floor naked in the kitchen and all the cabinet doors were open and all of the burners on the stove were lit.

That gentleman lived to tell the tale, and he’s drug free today. But goddamnit I’ve seen how destructive legally prescribed pain killers can be. I wouldn’t wish my friend David’s fate on my worst enemy.

Last night, on CNN’s “Parts Unknown”, Anthony Bourdain visited Greenfield, MA, a town in western MA which has a growing heroin problem.

Bourdain pointed out that Greenfield isn’t the only town of its kind, as heroin has gone from a drug problem largely seen in poorer, urban neighborhoods to a highly visible issue just as easily suffered by middle or upper class individuals and those living in otherwise wholesome looking small American towns. He points to an increased use of prescription opioid pain-killers like OxyContin, which were originally proclaimed as non-addictive, as a possible reason for the increase in heroin use.

A local family doctor backed up Bourdain’s claims about prescription medication saying that, while there is no one place or person who holds all the blame, “there is an awful lot of money to be made by promoting the treatment of pain to the highest level … I was taught in residency you give people as much pain medicine as they need. You get them out of pain. We will judge your hospital, we’ll judge your emergency room, based on your pain scores.”

Maybe modern American capitalism, based on short-term profit instead of the public good, isn’t ideally suited for medical care. It turned out, for Presbyterian Hospital, to be the most disastrous economic decision they could have chosen, didn’t it? The entire incident was a poster child for a single-payer system.

The government accounting office here in Sweden has had a look at the reforms for healthcare providers, which were pushed under the aegis of “freedom of choice.”
The reforms basically made it much easier for private enterprises to establishe themselves and to buy old goverment clinics.
Oh, the effect? The healthy and the rich have been those who benefited the most, while the sick and poor have actually lost on the whole deal.
And no, this isn’t politicized, the accounting office began the review more than a year ago, during the last — conservative-led — administration.
The former social secretary Göran Hägglund, responsible for the reforms, has not been available for comments.

Just missed the start of session in Austin (was there last week). But it seems that significant numbers of Southerners deny the reason that the Civil War (aka the War of Southern Secession to Preserve Slavery) was fought. And they’re not above trying to deny the reality that federal law and federalism permits the federal government to act as it does.

This guy, and many like him, want to refight the civil rights movement, among others. They’re stuck on stupid, and you’d think that being paid minimum wage to work in the legislature might mean compassion might rub off on a few of these part-time legislators, but instead it brings out even more nuttiness and miscreants who ignore that their policies are depriving ever more people of a living wage.

I had remarked at the time that I knew little more. My mother was a little more forthcoming this Veteran’s Day; this picture was taken somewhere in England. My mother’s father served as a Tech Sergeant in the US Army Air Force in Europe. I’m told that my father’s father fought in France, but I have yet to uncover any evidence of this being the case. I may have to ask about that when I go home to fish country the weekend after next.

(He was wounded in Oct 1918, and due to a few web-sites containing diary entries by someone else’s ancestors who were in the same company we think we can get close.)

Beyond that grandfather my family has been lucky. Ages just meshed wrong for anyone else having military service in either WW1 or WW2 beyond the men married to a couple of my paternal aunts.

My great uncle was a fair bit older than my paternal Grandfather, and served in the Great War as a caisson driver, relaying ammo to the front. I have an M1917 “Brodie” steel helmet to remind me of him and his time in France.

He returned and farmed his small plot the rest of his life and was kind to his grand nephew in his day.

Both grandfathers I’ve already mentioned; mom’s dad was wounded somehow. I still don’t have details on that, either.

Here’s what’s upsetting to me about the Democratic Party. They lose in a big way and their first thought is “How can we give into the Republicans?” and as I said I get it somewhat and understand they can’t sound too partisan. However, with Republicans, defeat means being even more partisan and obstructionist to the Democrats and President. I guess what I mean is I don’t want to ever hear how the Dems are “just as bad” as the GOP when you have one party that is actually accommodating after defeat and another that doubles down on the same old shit after defeat.

I do remember the then RNC chair Mehlman admitting it was wrong but Rush got furious because we all know who really is in charge. And then we never really heard much again from the RNC about it. The fact of the matter is the GOP has been playing off of white resentment for Democrats supporting the Civil Rights movement for nearly a half century now. It may not be as obvious as n-word n-word but shit like saying minorities support Democrats because of “free stuff” is certainly an extension of it.

I wouldn’t even bring up David Duke. I’d just bring up to them that if their party was as committed on civil rights as they claim they need to explain why Goldwater was nominated, why Reagan until pressured opposed the MLK holiday, and why Nixon embraced Strom Thurmond. Point out what their actual presidential candidates did. It is notable to point out though that Duke got over 40% of the vote though running as a Republican.

I had remarked at the time that I knew little more. My mother was a little more forthcoming this Veteran’s Day; this picture was taken somewhere in England. My mother’s father served as a Tech Sergeant in the US Army Air Force in Europe. I’m told that my father’s father fought in France, but I have yet to uncover any evidence of this being the case. I may have to ask about that when I go home to fish country the weekend after next.

If the Texas Republican Party did that kind of purge, 60% of the state’s population would disappear. This is not a new phenomenon here. In 1928, Texas went for the Republican Herbert Hoover (gasp!) in the Prez race because they couldn’t vote for that Papist Al Smith.

The Southern Strategy I think had another non racial consequence that I don’t think gets talked about. Before the 60’s, there really was a consensus in American society about government. Policies like reasonable wages, benefits, etc were pretty much accepted. But when the Great Society and with it the Civil Rights Movement was going to make those benefits for all not just whites. The idea that “big government” was taking away “liberty” took hold. Now to be fair, there was always that mindset on the old right that hated the post WWII consensus regardless but for the majority of American people, it was something agreed on. The Southern Strategy fed the myth that still persists to this day that “Government is the problem.” It’s why you paradoxically see areas that benefit and could benefit from strong social welfare programs supporting Republicans. The culture war also applies here too since GOP candidates have convinced many less off voters that hating gays or the idea of women having the right to choose is a bigger horror than having the government cut programs that could and do benefit them.

I think pharmacies are rejecting all scripts for people who are not regular customers. I used to get my meds from Express Scripts (Medco) but with the new regs they can’t fill them any more.

So I am basically SOL.

Heh. One of the things I loved about the film Watchmen was this little nugget from Adrian Veidt - aka Ozymandias;

I laughed out loud at that line. Brilliant.

That was one of the main reasons I liked _Watchmen_ so much. It set a whole bunch of what I thought were the common comic books tropes on their heads. (Note: I am not a comic book buyer/reader, so I might not have a “true” grasp of what those tropes should be.)

It’s basically a deconstructionist look at comic-book archetypes. Like the masked vigilante (ie, Batman) who in Watchmen is best typified by Rorschach, who is arguably insane, and at the very least, profoundly mentally and emotionally disturbed.

A bit late, but I always considered Rorschach to be the only sane character in Watchmen.
