Report: Dennis Hastert Paid to Conceal Sexual Misconduct

Republican family values
Politics • Views: 32,029

Wow. I mean, wowie. Former GOP House Speaker Dennis Hastert has reportedly been paying off a man for many years to conceal “sexual abuse” that dates back to his days as a high school wrestling coach.

Indicted former House Speaker Dennis Hastert was paying an individual from his past to conceal sexual misconduct, two federal law enforcement officials said Friday.

One of the officials, who would not speak publicly about the federal charges in Chicago, said “Individual A,” as the person is described in Thursday’s federal indictment, was a man and that the alleged misconduct was unrelated to Hastert’s tenure in Congress. The actions date to Hastert’s time as a Yorkville, Ill., high school wrestling coach and teacher, the official said.

“It goes back a long way, back to then,” the source said. “It has nothing to do with public corruption or a corruption scandal. Or to his time in office.” Thursday’s indictment described the misconduct “against Individual A” as having “occurred years earlier.”

Of course it was live boy. Surprise, surprise, surprise.

Now the countdown to ‘Dennis Hastert (D)’ on the Fox News Chyron can start.

As I said yet another right wing sexual hypocrite. Imagine my shock.

Did a pretty good job covering up something like that, to make it into congress and all the way to Speaker. Even with the hush money.

Apparently this is going to be the “defense” of Hastert, that he’s the victim because the federal laws he broke are “wrong,” that people should be able to withdraw however much they want from their own bank accounts whenever they like without justifying it to the government.

That article is 10 pounds of stupid in a 5 pound bag.

A generic laundry list of more or less justified concerns about Federal over-reach has no relation to the Hastert case, unless one wants to make an argument that money laundering is a good thing and/or that the reporting requirements for large cash transactions should be reduce or eliminated.

However, neither of these arguments is made in the article. Are all dudebros completely incapable of having the title match the content of the article?

He’s the one who chose apparently to pursue a relationship with a male student and he’s also the one who chose a political career and to pay the man off from talking so Dennis s precious “family values” street cred wouldn’t go to shit if it was revealed he had a sexual relationship with a high schooler.

That’s what makes me laugh at such a “defense” as the one Greenwald is offering. Hastert was being blackmailed and could have told the FBI that when they inquired as to why he was withdrawing so much money from his account. But either his pride or his political future would not allow him to admit such, likely out of fear that the matter would go to trial and his past sin made public knowledge.

34 Stephen T.  May 29, 2015 12:27:32pm

A reminder that Hastert isn’t a closeted gay man who secretly had sex with a guy and then paid him to cover it up. The money paid was to cover up “sexual abuse”, which means that Hastert is a pedophile who had sex with a minor and then paid to cover up his crime.

I think it was public knowledge of such. This is the guy who was supposed to be the replacement to Gingrich and Livingston after their affairs were revealed after the Lewinsky scandal. Someone who the House R’s could point to and say “Look at Dennis, he’s a moral guy and just a simple former high school teacher/wrestling coach.” I really have a hard time feeling sorry for him since A) he as you say could have told the FBI he was being blackmailed, B) valued his political career so much that he made the payments, and C) continued to vote against gay people having rights. Not that Glenn really cares about that since he wasn’t impacted by the bigoted bullshit since he just went to Brazil.

‘Sexual misconduct’ could involve violence, coercion, or merely taking advantage of a young person. People who don’t see those as criminal have no feeling for the victims.

This is why I could never get on board with all the Snowden shit. The people crying from the rooftops about civil liberties were not talking about poor black kids getting stopped and frisked, an actual violation of their rights, they were freaking out about the government having the ability to possibly go through their browsing history if they get a warrant, something that corporations do all the time without one. The self proclaimed champions of freedom and individual rights really don’t give a shit if its happening to already mistreated minorities, they only care if it could possibly happen to them, white men living comfortably, and ignore the civil rights advocates that have been documenting violations for years, because those things could never happen to them so the oppressed people must deserve it.

“Pedophila” as a psychological condition applies to prepubescent children. It is called “hebophilia” for early teens and “ephebophilia” if the attraction is to late teens.

However, the crime of pedophilia is applied to any person who has illegal sexual contact with a minor, including teens. It doesn’t matter if the victim was 7 or 17, both are still a crime.

I think what it’s going to come down to is what he was being blackmailed for and whether or not it was itself a crime (and any potential statutes of limitations). Whatever he was trying to hide, he felt it serious enough (even if only in his mind) that he was going to fork over $3.5 million to keep it hidden.

One interesting point that will likely get explained soon is why the extortion happened so recently. Apparently it only started in 2010.

Nah, I’m sure Glenn will continue to excuse it. Declare that whatever the original crime was, the government was in the wrong for charging Hastert with anything.

GG is so unethical, it’s always made me wonder what other kinds of skeletons are in his closet? Why did he really give up what was left of his law career and move to Brazil, anyway? Isn’t he supposed to owe the IRS some back taxes as a result of his porn business, for instance?

Repeal of DOMA hasn’t encouraged him to move back to the US, and he’s visited here several times after the Snowden theft. So what’s keeping him from moving back? Rather odd tweets between him and Michael C Moynihan, another right wing Libertarian, at the bottom of the piece and I don’t think it’s about Snowald:

Yes, he claims he’s 20 yrs younger. “David” was a young hustler from the favela when they met on the beach at the time GG was on a 2 mo vacation and from what he says, they’ve never separated since that night. GG claims it was the impetus for him moving to Brazil, but I’m not buying it.

I don’t think it would matter much in Brazil if “David” had been younger, but something like that would have come out if GG had decided to try bringing him into the US at that time.

re: #57 Targetpractice

As always, it’s not the crime, it’s the cover-up. What will damn Hastert more than anything will not be the nature of the crime, it’s the lengths he was prepared to go to keep it quiet. The Foley scandal has already been brought up in this thread and I’ve been seeing people referencing rumors from 2006 and earlier about Hastert’s sexual orientation. Every dark chapter in this man’s history is about to be drug out into the light of day.

Well, depending on the exact nature of the original crime, it could well be both the crime AND the cover-up.

5 Browns sisters to promote bill on statute of limitations of sex crimes

Two members of the famed piano group The 5 Browns are working with Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., to promote a bill that would incentivize states to reconsider their statute of limitations laws with regard to sexual crimes.

[…]

“(The bill) would help the states, (encourage) them to change their statute of limitations laws,”Deondra Brown said.

The sisters founded the Foundation for Survivors of Abuse after their father, Keith Brown, was sentenced to prison in 2011 for sexually abusing his daughters over a period of several years in the 1990s.

“We started receiving emails from victims all over the country saying that they were not allowed by their statute of limitations to prosecute when they were finally ready,” Deondra Brown said. “We realized what a big problem it is for victims (not) to be able to have that closure and that opportunity to prosecute and put these criminals away.”

GOP plan would cut UW System funding, tenure

The University of Wisconsin System would see $250 million in cuts and sweeping changes in its operations, under a proposal put forward by GOP lawmakers Friday that would still be less dramatic than changes proposed by Gov. Scott Walker.

Lawmakers on the Legislature’s budget committee are poised to reduce Walker’s proposed cuts to the UW System from $300 million over two years to $250 million, which UW System leaders praised, but faculty members on campuses said was not nearly enough. The extra $50 million would be distributed to campuses around the state that are judged by UW leaders to be hardest hit by the cuts, according to a GOP motion.

The Joint Finance Committee would continue for another two years the freeze on tuition for undergraduate state residents that was proposed by the governor and likely 2016 presidential candidate.

In addition, the provisions of academic tenure for professors would no longer be included in state law. The UW Board of Regents could choose to retain tenure under its rules or decline to do so, which would allow it to lay off any faculty in cases of budget difficulties or changes to academic programs.

The FBI has interviewed a second person concerning sexual allegations against Hastert.

Source: Ex-House Speaker Dennis Hastert allegedly paid to hide sexual misconduct

chicago.suntimes.com

Former Republican House Speaker Dennis Hastert allegedly paid hush money to cover up sexual misconduct with a male student dating to his time as a coach and teacher in Yorkville, according to a source familiar with the investigation.

The source said federal investigators identified, then interviewed at least one other alleged victim in the case against Hastert. The second victim’s statements to investigators were critical to corroborating allegations of past sexual misconduct, the source said. There was no allegations of a financial relationship involving the second individual, the source said.

Hastert, 73, of Plano, was indicted Thursday on allegations he paid hush money to cover up misconduct against an unnamed individual referred to in court papers only as “Individual A.” The misconduct wasn’t specified in the indictment, only that it happened years ago and that the individual had known Hastert for most of the individual’s life. Well, they have to pay for this somehow:
Audit: School voucher expansion could cost $800M

MADISON — A Republican-approved expansion of the private-school voucher program could divert an additional $600 million to $800 million from public schools over the next decade, according to an analysis by the nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau released by Democrats on Thursday.

Who needs higher education? They only need the private schools paid for with tax dollars.

My surprise, etc:

Voucher school backers have been significant contributors both to Walker and Republicans in the Legislature. The national pro-voucher group American Federation for Children, spent $4.3 million helping to elect Republicans to the Wisconsin Legislature between 2010 and 2014, according to the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign which tracks such spending. Additionally, pro-voucher donors have given Walker $1.3 million since 2009.

How many people’s identities were stolen when you provided a source for others? How man guns were put on the street? How many died as a result of your activities? Some of the parents of the dead were there and they don’t have their kids to love any more. And there are plenty of minority kids who did far less who got more time than you were given.

You may have “never wanted that to happen” but it did, thanks to your unbridled greed and flouting of the law.

Why Santorum turn on the Duggars - I think the case is obvious, but just to put the finishing touches on what is happening to the GOP regarding Duggar badness, when you lose Michael Reagan you’ve probably lost many others:

Michael Reagan: Conservative Christians miscount

Child molesting is not a “mistake” you make when you’re young. It’s a crime against the innocent that should be prosecuted — and one I believe that should have no statute of limitations. In fact, the statute of limitations is only there to protect the guilty, not protect the innocent.

I’ve noticed that some high-profile religious conservatives are absent on the Duggar scandal. I believe they realize they are now in a lose-lose situation and are just hoping the whole thing blows over quickly.

From the article:

The defense also made an extensive appeal for leniency, citing Ulbricht’s ability to contribute to society in spite of his crimes. Ulbricht’s team submitted nearly a hundred letters from friends, family, and other acquaintances, testifying to Ulbricht’s good character. “I’ve had my youth, and I know you must take away my middle years,” Ulbricht wrote in a pre-sentencing statement, “but please leave me my old age.” Judge Forrest had a harsh reaction to Ulbricht’s plea, describing it as a “display of arrogance that the court takes into consideration.”

On Friday Ulbricht was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for his role in creating and running Silk Road’s billion-dollar, anonymous black market for drugs. Judge Katherine Forrest gave Ulbricht the most severe sentence possible, beyond what even the prosecution had explicitly requested. The minimum Ulbricht could have served was 20 years.

Yeah the lack of stature of limitations makes this even more interesting. I’m willing to bet the boy in question was one of the wrestlers. Buzzfeed article quotes a former teacher as saying he really wasn’t that interested in his job teaching but really involved wrestling. The coaching would also give him more intimate contact with a child than if he were just teaching him for one class period. Perhaps if he were tutoring the child but as the article says he doesn’t seem to have been a very active teacher.

Kylie Jenner Grabs Boobs in NSFW Instagram Photo

I’m the last one to want to diss eroticism in photography, yet in my mind being 17 ought to mean one shouldn’t be primed (by the parents and industry) for such (but maybe I’m just being old fashioned.) This is the flip side of the Duggars humiliating their children for masturbating.

Delaying is usually a good tactic-but pouring gasoline via 18 USC 1001 not only added fuel to the fire but short-circuited being able to delay the process-and in this case, it wound up prematurely exposing the whole sordid affair prematurely.

Cop Caught On Video Telling Black Teen ‘If You Fuck With Me, I’m Going To Break Your Legs’

thinkprogress.org

“Can you tell me why I’m being arrested?” Hamza Jeylani asks an officer in a video captured on his cell phone.

“Because I feel like arresting you,” the officer, who the American Civil Liberties Union identifies as Officer Rod Webber, replies in the short video.

This exchange happens after Webber calmly threatens Jeylani, who does not appear to be offering any resistance whatsoever. “Plain and simple,” Webber tells Jeylani, “if you fuck with me I’m going to break your legs before you even get a chance to run.” More

That cop should be fired no ifs or buts about it.

re: #348 goddamnedfrank

Christ, Betsy Rothstein can’t get anything right. She knows goddamned well that Twitter’s stated reason for booting Chuck was “targeted abuse” and had nothing to do with any inference of a death threat. Chuck’s supporters are deliberately parroting this false notion as a distraction.

Wonkette has had the lovely Betsy’s number for a long time. A few apt descriptions:

Betsy Rothstein, that sack of failure and loneliness in a human skin-suit who dribbles out “thoughts” for Tucker Carlson’s Journal of Caucasian Butthurt.

We haven’t had a good #WAR in a while; WeaselZippers are really beneath us, and Betsy Rothstein’s column at the Daily Caller is just Sad.

Why have we been ignoring the news of Betsy Rothstein, whom Wonkette wants to be when we grow up (no we don’t), leaving FishbowlDC and moving on to Tucker Carlson’s Stormfront By Tucker Carlson? Well, because we didn’t have much to say that wasn’t just “Betsy Rothstein is human garbage” piling-on.

and on it goes…
