Suddenly Breitbart “News” Loves the Pope

All it took was a meeting with their latest anti-gay heroine
Politics • Views: 53,734

The dim-witted propagandists of Breitbart “News” have been viciously attacking Pope Francis for the past two weeks, accusing the Pope of “slapping conservatives,” “dissing” their hero Donald Trump, “failing social conservatives,” pandering to “LGBT activists” and the “big gay hate machine,” coddling undocumented immigrants, bashing free markets, falling for the “hoax” of climate change, and even “condemning millions to unspeakable misery.”

There are literally dozens of posts at Breitbart “News” bashing Pope Francis for everything he did on his trip to the US, and most of them repeat the refrain that above all, Pope Francis should stick to religious issues and keep his nose out of American politics.

But suddenly today, they’re singing the Pope’s praises and congratulating him for sticking his nose into American politics — and you can probably guess why: Huckabee: Pope Congratulated Kim Davis for Stand Against ‘Tyranny’.

However, the slobbering hordes of knuckle-dragging right wing commenters that complete the Breitbart business model are not so easily mollified.

Huckabee is a jacka$$ and the Pope is a socialist who should stay in the Vatican and keep his mouth shut!!!

[…]

What a coward the Pope is. Met in secret. Kim Davis had more courage.

[…]

I’m thinking the Pope has a boatload of hypocrisy to dole out to the world.

Why is Huckleberry even still around?? He’s in the bottom 3 among the GOP Prez Candidate Clowns still hanging around, and waiting for what?? ….. for “GAWD” to anoint him the GOP Candidate?? He’s like a little annoying rat-dog that won’t go away, yaps constantly, and peees on people’s shoes.. Go away Huckleberry!! Shoo!! Shoo!!

[…]

Great the socialist Pope meets in private to show support. Hey Pope, you want to show some real leadership then this should have been your topic to our senate and congress and president versus a PRIVATE meeting. Show some real backbone and show the world that you believe in what you are preaching too.

Thousands of comments in this vein, with very few positive toward Pope Francis.

You know….I am not a supporter of any church that would have me for a member these days, but the term “Judicial Tyranny” is not a term that rings right with this pope. This whole story doesn’t seem right.

But then, it’s Breitbart and a day ending in Y, so there’s that.

I saw the pope kiss a little girl in public, and her only agenda was acceptance of her parents by the country she was born in. IN PUBLIC!

You were calling out this Pope as early as the Irish SSM referendum maybe even earlier. Anyhow, my honest thoughts are that I still appreciate that this Pope is more willing to talk about climate change and poverty and to a large degree seems to live his message fairly consistently but at the same time, I do feel disappointment in this. Can’t really explain it. I think even though I’m only baptized Catholic, I still have some cultural attachments with Catholicism that come with my mom’s parents having been quite devout.

The Pope isn’t gonna dig homosexuality, I don’t think anybody really expects him to. I don’t know who said what to whom in this meeting. All I can say is that when the Pope was in Philadelphia talking up the family, he didn’t go anywhere near homosexuality or divorce. His tone was basically that the family is the cornerstone of society. I think it’s inevitable that Frank’s gonna have to speak up about this, kind of like that time he said all dogs sort of go to heaven.

I think sometimes people get their hopes up. I think a lot of people really thought when Francis talked about “Who am I to judge” that it meant that the RCC wouldn’t object to SSM anymore. I really had no such allusions myself but I do confess disappointment because I thought that Francis could at least be nuanced to understand law. See my number 8 I guess. I’ve never been a devout Catholic but as a child of two people who were raised Catholic, it’s a part of who I am in a weird way.

I think what ultimately disappoints people is he gave Kim his blessings. I hate to give some of the GOP presidential candidates any sort of credit but Graham and Trump and Pataki (who is Catholic) have said that she needs to do her job.

Francis may be more open minded than his predecessors, but the Catholic Church is a massive institution, changing its direction is like trying to steer an aircraft carrier in the middle of an iceberg flow, at night during a storm. Expecting the rules to change over night and there be no issues is a fool’s dream. Or perhaps the Church will remain out of step with the modern world on this (and other issues).

I can’t really explain it but I’ve always felt “culturally Catholic.” I guess that comes from having done some of the motions and being baptized. Plus I grew up hearing my Dad’s stories about parochial school, I’d do the cross when shooting free throws, had a great uncle who was a priest, and am aware that Catholicism had some part in why some of my family emigrated to the US in the first place. I’ve never been what one could call devout- never a regular mass goer and I have not received my first communion ever nor do I expect ever to.

38
SteveMcGaziBolaGate  Sep 30, 2015 • 1:28:29pm

I think that the Pope so far has been sort of like “let God worry about what gay people do.” I had a priest in high school who explained the whole doctrine of sex as the Church sees it. Long story short, gay sex is equivalent to extramarital sex (It is sex outside of marriage). Some people take it way over the edge, but as Father Handjob said, what you do behind closed doors is between you and God.

On Hitlers Christian faith:

The Government, being resolved to undertake the political and moral purification of our public life, are creating and securing the conditions necessary for a really profound revival of religious life…. The National Government regard the two Christian Confessions as the weightiest factors for the maintenance of our nationality. They will respect the agreements concluded between them and the federal States. Their rights are not to be infringed…. It will be the Government’s care to maintain honest co-operation between Church and State; the struggle against materialistic views and for a real national community is just as much in the interest of the German nation as in that of the welfare of our Christian faith. The Government of the Reich, who regard Christianity as the unshakable foundation of the morals and moral code of the nation, attach the greatest value to friendly relations with the Holy See and are endeavouring to develop them.

-Adolf Hitler, in his speech to the Reichstag on 23 March 1933

The Pope was never going to accept abortion and contraception, or women in the priesthood, or SSM, or even homosexuality. However, his open advocacy against income inequality and the death penalty, and in favor of addressing AGW revealed that all those Conservatives who railed against ‘Cafeteria Catholics’ pick and choose which teachings they follow, just like everyone else.

completely unrelated but the mention of working bingo tables reminded me of something. In high school (mid-90s), they used to do bingo in our high school gym once a week. Somehow, it came about that the various athletic teams (or rather their booster clubs) would get extra money if the teams helped set up and/or take down the bingo floor - parents would also be stuck working it occasionally. These little blue haired women, some with oxygen tanks, would usually be proceeded by a cloud of cigarette smoke upon exiting. It was always a surreal experience. But then they banned smoking on high school campuses and they had to find somewhere else to play bingo.

Right. I mean if Kim wants to keep believing SSM is immoral, fine, I can’t stop her but if as a public official in our nation that does in fact allow SSM, hell yeah I object. She’s not above the law. If I were a public official, I wouldn’t be able to use my prejudices to dictate what laws are and are not enforced. I could never be a cop or prosecutor for that very reason, I have a big problem with our drug laws but if I were to become either, I would be obligated by law to enforce those laws just as Kim is.

And before you say “Catholic marriage”, the Church recognizes non-Catholic marriages as such.

The lecture was in 1982, and I don’t think many people considered SSM at the time. The Church may accept non-Catholic marriages, but it probably won’t accept anybody’s SSM. That’s the Church’s problem. Also, by abridging the long story I left out a couple of other tidbits about the lecture, the relevant one being that procreation had a big role in sex and naturally, gay sex has a low risk of procreation. (and masturbation, while we’re at it - even condoms!). I gotta tell you, by the time this guy was done my face was beet red, but he did seem to cover all the bases. (also went on about why priests are celibate and other stuff).

Last little bit, at that time an infertile man could marry, (miracles can happen!) but an impotent man couldn’t because he couldn’t get the little swimmers in, I guess.

Sure, for all anyone knows he could have been an atheist who only used religious rhetoric for political reasons. For all I know, this may be true for Ted Cruz and Mike Huckabee also. Looks like Cruz didn’t pick up any of those funds. How must it feel to be so repulsive that not even the Koch brothers want to support you.

I imagine when he’s not blaming the unions for the death of his father, (Prepare to die!), Walker is capable of being personable. Cruz meanwhile just seems to be about as fun as a kick in the nads, something that even those who agree with him a lot seem to think. I can’t think of a Democratic equivalent over the years but there’s always someone like Cruz who is just so insufferable even to those who agree with him more than not.

Crank magnetism. Not in the normal definition of the term but in a more literal sense, the magnetic attraction between two religious cranks. The Pope just couldn’t help himself, he was inexorably drawn to Kim like north to south pole.

I’ll tell you guys if the Kershaw biography touches heavily on it. I’m only at the early years following WWI. It’s a very useful biography because he analyzes past sources. For example, he thinks that a lot of stuff that Hitler himself said about the origin of his antisemitism was exaggerated or even false.

So Francis asks “Who am I to judge” WRT who anyone chooses to love and simultaneously says “Stay strong” while applauding KD’s conscientious objection, telling her that she DOES have the right to judge and use her authority as county clerk to actively deny others’ legal rights. So in public he’s righteous, loving, and forgiving while in private… I’ll just stop there.

Since the topic is religion—conversation I had yesterday with very devout Christian friend. Subject was a mutual acquaintance’s new baby grandson who was born with a rare, usually fatal disease.

Friend: We all prayed and our prayers worked—the baby is going to survive against all odds.

Me: I would never deny your belief in the power of prayer, but perhaps some credit should go to the amazing medical team who treated the baby, and, you know, science.

Friend: Oh, they were wonderful, but it was God who made sure they were in position to provide that treatment.

Me—not wanting to lose friend—silent, shaking head and thinking—if God is so powerful, why wouldn’t he have kept the baby from being born with the disease in the first place?

Sigh.

That the origins of his Antisemitism were in Vienna? Yeah he did and wrote as much in Mein Kempf but we all exaggerate stuff about ourselves. I’ll give you an example. Take the politician who talks about his “humble, working class upbringing” who ends up having been fairly well off. The core tenet of Roman Catholicism, held and maintained above all else is the continued existence of the Universal Church as the only mediator between God and people. All else falls before that necessity, every Pope has that as his Prime Directive. Survive.

The Church may prosper or not, its influence in the world wax and wane but it has to exist if it is to do God’s will on Earth. It will bend if it must, dogma will change, the catechisms brought up to date as needed in order to simply be there as it has been for nearly two thousand years.

That actually gets me at another thought I had with my Dad the other day. The vast majority of prisoners are going to get out of prison at some point so I think that furthers the notion that prison should be able rehabilitation and giving these people a chance to succeed and not become repeat felons once they get out. Prison educational and job programs are not only in the prisoner’s best interest, they are in society’s as well. Too often I think there is this desire that we need to punish criminals and man to some degree I understand the emotional side of it especially if it was your loved one that was the victim of their crime but we have to be aware that most prisoners will leave prison.

No shutdown: House approves short-term spending bill to keep federal government open

WASHINGTON (AP) — Congress is sending legislation to President Barack Obama that would head off the threat of a government shutdown at midnight Wednesday.

Democrats helped embattled House GOP leaders pass the measure by a sweeping 277-151 vote with just hours to spare. The Senate passed the legislation by a 78-20 tally earlier in the day.

There are many philosophical approaches to the “All-good” nature of God. The one I go with is that “good” has a definition beyond our ability to articulate. The theory of evolution and natural selection can account for our development, and the development of all species, but it is an ugly, painful process to those who don’t pass on their genes (and those who do). I don’t have an answer, that is just my approximation, I guess the best bad argument until I come up with something less bad.

What I have to say frustrates me is how non-belivers are expected to be “polite” to those with faith but those with Faith thinking other people are damned to hell is just fine. That always bothered me even when I was a theist. There’s a lot of cultural double standards and I agree with Sergey about how it is indeed silly for people who follow a religion who certainly have a lot of zany beliefs in their own system mocking another. I hpoe I don’t offend Christians here but I really don’t see how what Christianity believes about the virgin birth, Resurrection, etc is any more nonsensical than what Scientologists do. If good = merely what God says is good, then God can tell you to [insert the most abominable thing you can imagine here], and that will be good by def. If good is independent from God, then, basically, God is not absolute.

A mural painted on the side of a sporting goods store on 16th street in Phoenix is what started Calle 16, a mural project meant to build community pride in a Latino neighborhood.

It was created five years ago in response to Arizona’s controversial immigration law known as Senate Bill 1070, which instructed police officers to question the immigration status of people they suspected were in the country illegally.

[…]

Ironic that the featured mural mentioned is by an Apache artist. Kind of like saying, ‘Don’t listen to those newbies. We welcome you!

not that it’ll happen (even as crazy as American politics has been since, um 1789 or so), but I wonder if there is a large enough block of relatively rational/moderate/old school Republicans left that if the Tea Party gets their way with a nomination for Speaker, that they could throw the election to Pelosi (with a little horse trading on committee assignments and what not).

I mean, something similar has happened occasionally in state legislatures, but not with big numbers. Still, the tantrums would be epic.

There are some semi-sophisticated attempts out there, having to do with defining the nature of God as goodness, so that “the good” is not separate from God but is not “defined” by his acts. This only leads to further problems though.

I did once hear a proposal to keep Boehner as Speaker by Pelosi allowing enough Dems to vote for him. Of course, that would have depended on him abolishing the ‘Hastert Rule’, and simply allowing legislation to come to the floor that would pass. You know, like the Senate’s Comprehensive Immigration Bill, for example, or Debt Ceiling stuff. I think a good case could be made for a Speaker elected by a bipartisan majority, when faced with an insane subgroup within the majority caucus.

That is certainly an argument I’ve seen, but I have never seen a perfectly conclusive philosophical argument. In your case, most theologians won’t go with your working definition (good=what God says is good). We don’t know everything that God has tried to tell us (as evidenced by contradictory passages in the Bible - as an aside, I always felt that Jesus came to deliver the Beatitudes to us, not to die for our sins). Only Biblical literalists would agree with your definition, and they won’t ever try to think it through any deeper. If something bad happened it must be your fault, according to them.

In short, however, it ‘snot what you think, it’s how you treat other people. We mere humans are least capable of that much.

This could go on all night, but unfortunately I have to go pick up my little angel from crew practice.

Might I gently suggest that if continuing to believe in God requires you making it all make sense to you, you’re likely to be disappointed.

One big reason I’m atheist is that everything only makes sense to me in the absence of a higher power. I’m not equipped for the mental gymnastics required to generate a cohesive worldview with an omnipotent omnibenevolent god at the center. I know others who avoid the gymnastics by glossing over them, but I’m not so inclined.

Good and bad are ultimately situational. A hurricane is bad if you are in its path and it blows your house down. It’s good for the land that is hydrated and nourished for next year’s crops. Diseases are bad when they kill you or loved ones, but are good for the spaces opened up for those who can now follow.

The thing about my belief in God is not in believing he is some sort of magician, but realizing that there are things that will remain beyond my knowledge. Faith requires doubt. Those fundies don’t realize that. If you take the Bible literally, and think that it has the answers to everything, than it follows that everything is knowable, and there is nothing left to believe in. I think we would agree at least that everything is not knowable, that we have limits to what we can know (Insert digression on Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle, quantum mechanics, and Schrodinger’s cat here - they prove that we absolutely CAN’T know everything). Therefore, for me to have faith, I have to live with doubt.

I’m late to most of the thread, but has anyone wondered if this meeting between Davis and the Pope was not pushed by an American Cardinal or Bishop?

Maybe the Pope didn’t give a shit, but he seems like the kind of person that doesn’t like to disappoint. So, a politically active Cardinal or Bishop gets the word out that he would like the Pope to hold a meeting.

Boom. Meeting held. No real purpose from the Vatican and the Pope, and that is why they refuse to play much.

Can you say Cardinal Timothy Dolan? I know you can. Remember all those pictures of the Pope in the US? Who was right there by his side?

I have heard this man several times smile and hate at the same time. He is glib and lovable…but he is very conservative.

From his Wiki page:

Advocacy

In November 2009, Dolan signed an ecumenical statement known as the Manhattan Declaration calling on evangelicals, Roman Catholics and Orthodox not to comply with rules and laws permitting abortion, same-sex marriage and other matters that go against their religious consciences. It calls for civil disobedience from Christian officials and laymen on these issues

Sigh.

This is why every god I’ve ever heard of anyone believing in always seems an obvious human invention. You either end up trying to explain “Why Bad Things Happen To Good People” with “It’s a Mystery!”, or you end up with a god who is omnipotent but appears capricious by our standards, which is even scarier than no god at all - you never know what he’ll do, or why, or what the effect will be on you.

That’s my theory as well.

The Vatican has no direct interest in some hillbilly clerk from Kentucky or her refusal to do her fucking job. A politically motivated American cardinal or bishop, OTOH, would be determined to set up a meeting to somehow bolster the bigot dead-ender cause against gay marriage.

Yes, the Pope opposes gay marriage. Yes, he doesn’t particularly like gays. He’s the Pope. That’s expected of him. He wouldn’t be the head of the RCC if he was actually a liberal. But I don’t see making a point of meeting Kim Davis an important part of the Vatican’s agenda while the Pope was in the US.

So, the big science news today was the 1000 Genomes project finishing their efforts.

As found in Nature:

[…]

Modelling the distribution of variation within and between genomes can provide insights about the history and demography of our ancestor populations14. We used the pairwise sequentially Markovian coalescent (PSMC)14 method to characterize the effective population size (Ne) of the ancestral populations (Fig. 2b and Extended Data Fig. 7). Our results show a shared demographic history for all humans beyond ~150,000 to 200,000 years ago. Further, they show that European, Asian and American populations shared strong and sustained bottlenecks, all with Ne < 1,500, between 15,000 to 20,000 years ago. In contrast, the bottleneck experienced by African populations during the same time period appears less severe, with Ne > 4,250. These bottlenecks were followed by extremely rapid inferred population growth in non-African populations, with notable exceptions including the PEL, MXL and FIN.

[…]

Crazy scientists, that’s much more than 6000 years.

These results are not so radical anymore, but the further data analysis from 1KGP gives more confidence in the results.

Furthermore:

To characterize more recent patterns of shared ancestry, we first focused on variants observed on just two chromosomes (sample frequency of 0.04%), the rarest shared variants within our sample, and known as f2 variants2. As expected, these variants are typically geographically restricted and much more likely to be shared between individuals in the same population or continental group, or between populations with known recent admixture (Extended Data Fig. 6a, b). Analysis of shared haplotype lengths around f2 variants suggests a median common ancestor ~296 generations ago (7,410 to 8,892 years ago; Extended Data Fig. 6c, d), although those confined within a population tend to be younger, with a shared common ancestor ~143 generations ago (3,570 to 4,284 years ago)13.

What I find interesting about this is that the very rare genotypes, which may be useful as ancestrally informative markers, tend to coalesce around the time of the beginning of agriculture. This suggests to me that the what led to the groups of people today which we define as populations is the result of the adoption of agriculture.

Sorry, no Adam, no Eve.

And definitely no Noah-type bottleneck of 4 couples.

Republicans in charge of Congress can now go back home and talk about how they stood up to the Democrats who run the House and voted against the terrible CR that didn’t defund Planned Parenthood, kill the Iran deal, or repeal Obamacare because the House is run by Democrats.

And the media will shout, “Both sides do it” and move on to the pressing issue of what Donald Trump had for lunch, and how will that impact the next polling period.

Is potassium chloride that hard to get ahold of? I’ve got sodium chloride in the cupboard, used to buy calcium chloride all the time to suck the moisture out of the air and precipitate it into a little bucket…It seems like there used to be “salt substitutes” that were potassium chloride. What am I missing here?

Morton Salt Balance is 25% KCl, 75% NaCl.

Pure KCl will require ebay, amazon, etc.

Now upgrading to OS X El Capitan. Man, I really hate when system updates give you an estimated time remaining, like 30 minutes - then sit there with no apparent progress for 20 minutes.

Then it suddenly jumps from 30 minutes to 7 minutes and sits there again for 20 more minutes. I’d almost rather have no estimated time displayed than this disquieting behavior.

You’re a braver man than I am. I held off on upgrading to Yoesemite until I got SSDs in my gear, seeing as what a shit show Mavericks turned out to be with platter HDDs.

It’s only fairly recently that the term “cult” took on a severely negative tone. (It dates from the rise of coercive, exploitive groups which is a late XX Cent thing.) Before that, it was used less critically for any small religious sect or even a sub-set of a major religion. In the 1950’s a Catholic writer could refer to “the cult of Mary” with no negative overtones. Anthros pretty much use it as a descriptor for any distinguishable religious group.

So, after my earlier encounter with the Crowder chowderheads, one of them is still at it with nonsensical ravings about how birth control includes abortifacients. Therefore, leftists have expanded birth control to include abortion = murder.

Identifying this for what it was simple enough. Claiming plan B and ella are abortifacients, even though they have nothing to do with the same biological processes, and that those two drugs actually prevent abortion. They prevent ovulation from happening, but the anti-choice extremists are pulling this crap out of a hat too.

Cute snark. I’ll still stick to the Who & the Clash, thanks.

…and just by extension…The Jam!

Which I actually like more now than then. But that is colored by the ongoing career of one Paul Weller who is still one of my favorites. Played Heavy Soul just the other night. Going for Stanley Road as the interlude in the Friday night guitar jams with my buddy.

OH HELL NO!

I’m notably afraid of heights. Balconies, rooftops, tall structures of any kind, terrify me. Strangely, I have been a pilot for 50 years but have never had this fear of heights in an aircraft, even in open cockpits miles above the Earth. I once asked an aviation psychologist about this anomaly. She told me it was not uncommon at all. Her explanation is that when you’re in an aircraft, it becomes the ground to your subconscious mind, while on a tall structure or a natural height of some kind, your subconscious still recognizes the ground far below and is duly alarmed.
My wife teased me about this when we visited the CN Tower in Toronto. The restaurant on top had a big section of glass floor that you (not I) could walk out on. There were children playing on it while I was a cringing mass of jelly six feet from the edge.
“Ha, little kids do what the shit-hot chopper ace is afraid to try!” she mocked.
I countered that I was also afraid to eat bugs or play in sewage while many little kids had no compunction about doing so. I also claimed that people who were afraid of heights were obviously more highly evolved, since those of our ancestors who lacked this useful precautionary instinct were likely to fall out of a tree or walk off a cliff before they could reproduce.

I’m pretty much the opposite. As long as I have something solid to stand on, I enjoy the view. There’s an overlook in Okanogan county, off the North Cascades highway, where the cliff actually goes in quite a bit below the guardrail. I used to love hanging forward way out past the rail, looking at the road winding by thousands of feet below.

OTOH, I’m terrified on the second step of a rickety stepladder….

In July, on my last day of school we had to kill a few state mandated hours at the Sewage Treatment Center near the Phila Intl Airport. It was interesting (to me, anyway), but the funnest part was wen we got to the stage where microbes eat the sludge out of the sludge. It’s covered by a concrete roof/floor, which I realized was kind of springy, so I started jumping up and down. I never saw people run so fast, even the tour guide was hauling ass, and she was the only one who knew which way to run.

The problem with defining a good God is the good old Euthyphro dilemma: is “good” independent from God or not? If good = merely what God says is good, then God can tell you to [insert the most abominable thing you can imagine here], and that will be good by def. If good is independent from God, then, basically, God is not absolute.

Always read the forecast discussion before freaking out.

2. A significant adjustment to the forecast has been made this
afternoon, and this shows an increased threat to the mid-Atlantic
states and the Carolinas. However, confidence in the details of the
forecast after 72 hours remains low, since we have one normally
excellent model that keeps Joaquin far away from the United States
east coast. The range of possible outcomes is still large, and
includes the possibility of a major hurricane landfall in the
Carolinas.

Prepare, sure. I am always in favor of being prepared.

So today is my 52nd birthday. Worked last night and work tonight so nothing terribly exciting :D One beer after work then off to bed I went.

After I got up this afternoon, I did make it out to the range and got a bit of WWII action going - M1 carbine and my 1911A1. I got the carbine not too long ago for about half the going rate for shooter grade ones. And it is a lot of fun. Still there’s a local gun show coming up 3 weekends from now and I’m tempted to see if I can get that going rate. With careful ammo choice and shot placement it’s acceptable for deer hunting (about the same as a 357 magnum) so it has practical use but the budget is always tight and $800+ would be a big help.

The quality time by myself hunting the wily paper-plate today didn’t help matters though, LOL.

Decisions decisions…

FYI, Vatican now stating that Ms. Davis was one of “several people” the Pope was giving audience to at the time and the Vatican does not necessarily support Ms. Davis’ position. He was just “being kind.”

Looks like her scumbag lawyers duped the Pope and his entourage. These people have no shame, and it’s too bad the Pope had to learn the hard way how America’s Evangelical right wing operates. His naiveté greatly damaged a ton of goodwill he was looking for during this trip. The weird thing is these Evangelicals generally despise the Pope from the outset.

Seeking out an audience with him should have sent up red flags, but I guess his handlers have no experience with the 2% of the world’s population that has manufactured their own bubble universe here in America.
