Cruz, Huckabee and Jindal Will Join Pastor Who Wants to Execute Gays

Far right pastor Kevin Swanson

Lovely. Republican presidential candidates Ted Cruz, Mike Huckabee and Bobby Jindal have all confirmed they’ll be speaking at the “National Religious Liberties Conference” next month, organized by a crazed extremist pastor who advocates executing gay people. Ben Carson may also be there, although he’s not listed in the group’s press release.

The organizer of the “National Religious Liberties Conference” in Des Moines, Iowa, announced today that Ted Cruz, Mike Huckabee and Bobby Jindal have committed to speaking at the summit, which will take place next month. One speaker at the conference, Iowa radio host Steve Deace, has said that Ben Carson has also RSVP’d for the event, although Carson’s name was not included in today’s press release.

Kevin Swanson, the conference’s chief organizer, is a far-right pastor and host of the “Generations Radio” program, on which he has frequently claimed that the government should put gay people to death, warned that the Girl Scouts and the movie “Frozen” turn girls into lesbians and blamed natural disasters on gay people and women who wear pants. (Update: Swanson is not the only activist speaking at the conference who backs the death penalty for homosexuality).

We have documented Swanson’s radical record in great detail, including his tirades against William Shakespeare, Mark Twain, Abraham Lincoln, Desmond Tutu and Taylor Swift.

Let them continue down this path. They have been in the bubble so long that they fail to recognize that normal Americans, despite being conservative by nature, reject this sort of extremism.

Killing people is usually a poor way to attract voters. But if all you have a chance at anyway is the haters of all stripes, you’re gonna have to talk about killing people. That’s the way to come out on top of the haters. Death is hate fulfillment.

Kevin Swanson: Red Tyrant Abraham Lincoln Introduced Communism To America
rightwingwatch.org

Swanson spoke with Walter Kennedy, the author of books such as “Lincoln’s Marxists” and “Red Republicans and Lincoln’s Marxists: Marxism in the Civil War.”

The Southern Poverty Law Center describes Kennedy as “a member of the hard core of the neo-Confederate movement” and “a founding member of the League of the South,” who has “called for a new Southern secession to escape the ‘overgrown and unresponsive’ federal government.” He also co-wrote a book entitled “The South Was Right!,” which defended Southern slavery.

In the interview with Swanson, Kennedy said that “radical socialists and communists” helped launch the Republican Party and put Lincoln in the White House, and then led “the prosecution of ‘The War Against the South.’”

They hang out with these guys yet somehow think that because the GOP was in the right 160 years ago, it somehow mitgates that their positions are the opposite of what the GOP’s was.

Thankfully support for marriage equality, and opposition to homophobia is at an all time high in America. If Steve Deace really thinks he’s going to be able to get the feds or the states to execute gays anytime soon, thankfully he’ll be really disappointed. In fact I have a feeling that the days where openly homophobic candidates can easily get elected, even running as Republicans in heavily red areas of the country are numbered.

re: #32 Blind Frog Belly White

Hey, man, bubbles can be fragile and easily popped.

I wish you were right, but when it comes to the closed system of right-wing media in this country, and its consumers, that “bubble” is tight and hard enough to qualify as armor plating (which in a way it is).

Paul Krugman, in a NYT Op-Ed column today nails it (as he usually does). While he focuses on Dr. Ben Carson as the main “grifter” here - over his willful denial of his - documented - promotion of whatever bogus “supplement” he was pitching, the same principle applies (probably even more so) to ideological grift: you can argue the facts, however incontrovertible, all day long: and the ideologues will simply dismiss them because of the “bias” of the source. I.e., any media source that challenges them or tells them anything other than what they want to hear.

Silly and mock-worthy to be sure, but unfortunately, a hard political fact when dealing with at least 27% of the electorate.

But isn’t the argument of Conservatives that Republican candidates lose because they’re not conservative enough? How would the nominee get away with swinging to the center if the base and Conservative media personalities hate the moderates and want candidates like Carson and Trump?

Plus how can you fool the electorate that you are centrist when you hold extreme positions like anti-abortion (no exceptions), xenophobia (anti-Muslim, anti-immigrants), homophobia (still fighting against same sex marriage), pro 1% (lower taxes on wealthy, raise taxes on everyone else), etc.?

Swanson: I’m beginning to get some evidence from certain doctors and certain scientists that have done research on women’s wombs after they’ve gone through the surgery, and they’ve compared the wombs of women who were on the birth control pill to those who were not on the birth control pill. And they have found that with women who are on the birth control pill, there are these little tiny fetuses, these little babies, that are embedded into the womb. They’re just like dead babies. They’re on the inside of the womb. And these wombs of women who have been on the birth control pill effectively have become graveyards for lots and lots of little babies. -

Which means that in RWNJ-speak, Marx wrote Lincoln’s 1860 autobiography and wrote his speeches.

I sometimes make a point of relativizing the left and right labels, as well as pointing out that some debates about labels are fruitless (e.g. “whether Nazis were socialists”).

So this is just in:

rbth.com

Communist Party parliamentary deputies Ivan Nikitchuk and Nikolai Arefyev have proposed to introduce administrative responsibility and impose fines or brief prison sentences for public acknowledgment of one’s “non-traditional” sexual orientation, the daily broadsheet Izvestiya reports.

Under the proposed bill, the public expression of “non-traditional” sexual relations in public places should be punished by a fine of between 4,000 and 5,000 rubles ($65-80 - RBTH). If it happens at cultural institutions or government offices, it should lead to a prison sentence of up to 15 days.

“I believe that the problem we have raised is acute and topical, as it addresses the social ills of our society and primarily deals with the moral education of the younger generation,” says Nikitchuk.

This is as close as you are gonna get:

11I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war. 12His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. 13He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. 14The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. 15Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.”a He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. 16On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written:

KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.
17And I saw an angel standing in the sun, who cried in a loud voice to all the birds flying in midair, “Come, gather together for the great supper of God, 18so that you may eat the flesh of kings, generals, and the mighty, of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all people, free and slave, great and small.”

19Then I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies gathered together to wage war against the rider on the horse and his army. 20But the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who had performed the signs on its behalf. With these signs he had deluded those who had received the mark of the beast and worshiped its image. The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur. 21The rest were killed with the sword coming out of the mouth of the rider on the horse, and all the birds gorged themselves on their flesh.

It will not matter. Once CNBC is labeled by The Grand Old Party as a member of mean mainstream media the ‘base’ will not listen to anything else.

And this whole bitching about mainstream media is just so stupid. If anything FOX has made the other channels study their model and I think they have all gone to a neutral stance not choosing any side as to not offend. I really do not think there is pure liberal media. Well, if there ever has been.

The GOP has a way more flexible media to mess with than they ever have. It’s just all part of the show to keep whipping them for some extra votes and keep that ‘base’ ready to pounce and do their bidding.

Almost all bike rallies have a Christian club doing ministry work now. Laconia, Daytona, Sturgis, Myrtle Beach, all have them. Some are overt fire and brimstone, others are just into riding and talking to people. Depends on the club/group/church affiliation. Some are nice enough and some are outright nutbars.

Party On: Queen’s Brian May Remembers ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ on 40th Anniversary

Tomorrow marks the 40th anniversary of Queen’s monumental prog-opera-pop-metal hit “Bohemian Rhapsody,” a tune that topped the charts in the U.K. in 1975 and then nearly repeated the feat in America in 1992 thanks to an especially iconic lip-sync in Wayne’s World. Its influence cannot be overstated, practically inventing the music video seven years before MTV went on the air. But to this day nothing sounds quite like it. The band is releasing their much-bootlegged 1975 London Hammersmith BBC broadcast as Queen - A Night at the Odeon - Hammersmith this holiday season and Rolling Stone caught up with Brian May to reminisce over the iconic, generation-crossing hit.

And this whole bitching about mainstream media is just so stupid. If anything FOX has made the other channels study their model and I think they have all gone to a neutral stance not choosing any side as to not offend. I really do not think there is pure liberal media. Well, if there ever has been.

There has been.

When there used to be 3 or 4 newspapers in every city, at least one of them was liberal.

As far as broadcast media… CBS was somewhat liberal when the Paleys owned it (since it became part of Viacom… no). NBC was somewhat liberal when the Sarnoff family owned it and Fred Friendly ran the news division (since it became a wholly-owned subsidiary of GE/Westinghouse… no). CNN was liberal when Ted Turner was running things (since it was bought by Time-Warner… no).

HuffPo is still liberal, to a point, in spite of their AOL ownership. Some parts of the day MSNBC is liberal. John Stewart’s Daily Show and the Colbert Report were both liberal (remains to be seen if Trevor Noah’s Daily Show will be liberal; the Late Show with Stephen Colbert is pretty balanced, the Nightly Show is liberal).

Many years ago when I broke up with my ex, I bought an old house that needed work. The stove door literally fell off when I opened it. Probably because you’re more likely to get support for your issues from an ally than from someone fundamentally opposed to your world view. Also, there are probably more than a few voters who support Sanders and/or Clinton who might not be aware of or keyed in on BLM issues - but they are most likely to be sympathetic to BLM’s positions. That’s honestly the best way to move the needle - you gain traction among allies, that spreads to the mushy middle, and then you build a consensus.

In a lot of ways, that’s how several various factions with pet issues in the conservative movement do it.

There is that.

On the other hand, I think this movement is much more decentralized. Campaign Zero, I think, is affiliated with Deray McKesson, and I think they made a definite step forward in articulating some goals, and another step forward with the candidates taking on at least part of their platform.

The movement is disparate, though, and I don’t think these folks are tightly tied into McKesson. But I’d like to know where they think Clinton falls short (and that would tell me if they’re justified in keeping pressure on; it’s also a truism that many supporters would rather drop any movement on these policy matters if they think the matter is “solved”)(something I most heartily disagree with).

I remember the ongoing discussion here about the Occupy Wall Street folks and how anyone associated with the movement was therefore responsible for the actions of anyone else associated with it.

It’s pretty common to blame the whole for the deeds of the part, regardless of political orientation.

Nobody “owns” BLM. It’s not a party or an organization. Nobody decides whether you are affiliated or not - you make yourself affiliated, and then you are.

Well, therein lies the danger of a leaderless decentralized movement - anyone can claim to be part of it, and their actions are blamed on the whole movement - “Why should we deal with Campaign Zero when BLM protestors are disrupting our rallies? “

But the underlying assumption here is that someone else (an independent observer) actually determines whether you’re part of the group or not.

David Dukes says: “I’m part of the BLM movement.”

Sergey Romanov says: “No you’re not, because you’re a racist. I can tell you’re not sincere.”

So it’s actually fine for someone to say: those agitators are not part of the BLM movement, whatever they claim. It’s just, like, their opinion man.

Anyway, I have to split (said in Arnie voice). Great weekends all around, I hope.

You can say: “Deray is not a part of BLM, whatever he claims.” But not many people will agree with you.

I can say: “Those agitators don’t define what BLM is about, but on the other hand they are having some positive effect by keeping this important issue in the spotlight.” Maybe some people will agree with that.

re: #288 Nyet

I’m having trouble understanding how decentralized movements accomplish much at a national level at least. Occupy, for example, has raised funds and paid off some mortgages for people who were about to lose their homes, local groups, acting on their own. But nationally, all that has seemed to happen is stories circulating about rapes and pooping in public at Occupy camps in places like NYC. Code Pink ended up being coopted by people who only seem to disrupt Congressional hearings and get themselves dragged out by cops, I can’t think of things they’ve done to help anyone. I fail to see how consistently interrupting campaign events works in their favor. Hillary did meet with members of BLM and did say she supported them. But honestly, a President does not have the full power to come down on police and craft laws against brutality. That’s the job of the legislative branch. On some level I get it, this moves the conversation toward what is happening to black communities and individuals nationwide, but at some point screaming at people has to end and real work to make changes has to start. What if they looked at existing laws and began crafting reforms they could take to the PTB? Protest is fine, but you have to have plans beyond that or nothing will ever change.

320
Big Beautiful Door  Oct 30, 2015 • 3:06:48pm

Looks like if Carson shows up at Swanson’s hatefest he’ll have some splainin’ to do.

But some leaders in the social conservative movement that has backed Carson say his more than 15-year record on the boards of retailer Costco Wholesale and food manufacturer Kellogg could pose a challenge for him as he seeks the nomination.

Carson supported various initiatives at both companies, such as barring discrimination based on gender identity, providing health insurance for employees’ domestic partners, and offering more diversity training. Because of such changes the companies now are ranked as some of the best in the United States by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender advocates.

“I think he has to explain this,” said Tony Perkins, president of the Christian conservative lobbying group Family Research Council. “As he is pursuing the presidency, what he has to make clear is that the board positions should not be reflective of his public policy.”

This kind of compassion and humanity simply can’t be tolerated by the fanatics on the religious right. This could be the chink in Carson’s armor of derpitude which costs him dearly in Iowa if Ted Cruz can exploit it.

re: #325 iossarian

We’re not having a deep philosophical conversation, in which case I would agree and would probably even go further with skepticism about statements, claims, opinions and objective reality as such.

We’re talking about a mundane matter of definitions. BLM is a description of a decentralized movement, the participants of which a) care about the police brutality towards blacks, b) take steps, big or small, to counter this brutality (as they see fit), c) identify themselves with the broader movement through the phrase “black lives matter”. That’s just a description of what is (and has been).

Your approach - to boil it down to mere opinions without any definitions - is problematic, as it would also entail that “Deray is a part of BLM” is a mere opinion. Whereas I would insist on naming this an objective fact. In no case is the denial of this claim true.

The disorganization of the debate and the outcry among wingnuts gives the RNC the opportunity to bludgeon the media into subservience, to make sure the next debates are limited to questions about who REALLY hates Hillary.

Mind you, OWS never turned out a pragmatic policy statement like Campaign Zero.

BLM never bothered to check and see if that name was already taken by some other organization, which it is.

What Cognitive Dissonance Can Do To You

I’ve always wondered what makes Hillary Clinton laugh so weirdly and at such odd times. It seems to be more prevalent since her head injury and extended hospitalization preceding her first Benghazi hearing appearance. At her second appearance recently her seemingly uncontrollable laughter was on full display. At times she seemed downright gleeful.

Heh. Internet of things right?
Long time since the Gregorian calendar was made. Way past time for another upgrade. Solar noon should be clock noon, all year long. Tweak the length of a second/an hour/a day just enough to get rid of leap year. Maybe get rid of time zones too. Zero at the dateline. No not Greenwich, the date line.

You can’t change the second—it’s the basis of all measurement. A meter is defined as 1/299,792,458 of the distance light travels (in a vacuum) in one second. A kilogram is 1/1000 of a cubic meter of water at its densest (4º C?). A foot is .3048 m. An inch is 1/12 ft, and a gallon is 231 cubic inches. Start messing with the second and everything’s screwed up.

Well after reading that the subject minister of this page also thinks that Frozen turns kids gay and assuming Bobby has pretty young kids, I can see why. I mean I am sure they’d understand a father that wouldn’t let them see a slasher flick but Dad hangs around without a minister that freaks out about Frozen.
