The Beauty of the Bolero: Miramar (NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert)

Felix Contreras | January 27, 2017 — Some say you have to have loved and lost to appreciate the beauty of the bolero. Since its inception in Cuba in the early 20th century, the music has been designed for thoughtful and emotional consideration of the joys and pains that come with loving someone so intensely, it becomes like a religion to adore that special someone (an actual bolero lyric).

When the members of Richmond, Virginia’s Miramar first heard the music of Puerto Rican composer Sylvia Rexach, they were intrigued that she wasn’t as well known as other popular bolero writers. So they came up with an album’s worth of her songs to cover, and have been wowing audiences across the country with their exquisite renditions of her songs.

When they pulled into NPR to play behind Bob Boilen’s desk, Miramar’s members made time stop with a performance that swept us off our feet, ably backed by friends of theirs from Richmond who played gorgeous string arrangements behind the band. So turn the lights down low, clear out the living-room carpet and find your dance partner for this one.

Uh, whoops….

Before immigration furor, tech giants donated to Trump inauguration

Some of the same technology giants that are waging a legal war against President Donald Trump’s immigration policies quietly offered support to his inauguration in January — complete with some previously undisclosed checks, POLITICO confirmed Tuesday.

In a move that might rile the liberal engineers who have spent weeks protesting Trump’s presidency, Amazon, Google and Microsoft donated both cash and technical services to the celebrations surrounding Trump’s swearing-in, according to federal documents and multiple sources familiar with the matter.

Now, those gifts are a visible symbol of the tech industry’s awkward balancing act when it comes to the Trump White House — doing battle with the president’s executive order on immigration while trying to engage with the new administration on issues like tax reform.

Microsoft contributed $250,000 in cash and the same amount in technology and other tools on Dec. 28 to the Presidential Inaugural Committee, federal ethics records filed last week show. The company declined to comment on its participation.

Google also provided tech services, including a YouTube livestream of the inauguration, on top of an unspecified cash donation, two sources familiar with the matter told POLITICO. Amazon similarly chipped in an undisclosed amount of money in addition to tech aid, sources said.

How about the president’s statements, Kellyanne, that are false? Like the murder rate is the highest it’s been in almost half a century? False! How about the fact that the media doesn’t report on terrorist attacks? False! I mean, you can talk about some jerk with some website making a mistake or almost making a mistake.

I think McConnell miscalculated. If he lets Warren read the letter(s), it’s a story buried halfway down the home page on most newspaper websites (at best). But by pulling this move, it’s a story that has legs. There’s already “She persisted” t-shirts and it’s trending on twitter. Now everyone is going to hear about the letter. And if he tries to shut down all the democrats, it becomes a giant story where he has to answer questions about why it was inappropriate. If he doesn’t then he has to answer why he did it to a woman but not to a man. Basically, he once again found a way to fuck himself

It might be remembering if you’ve signed in once. They typically use cookies to avoid making folks sign in repeatedly.

If I reaaaaaaaaaaaally cared I could dig up the sign-in info for my parents’ FiOS and use that but I don’t.

I haven’t tried the Senate link because I’m not actively trying to listen. Still too much shit on my list to get done today.

Department of Defense looks to rent space in Trump Tower

The Department of Defense is seeking to rent space in President Trump’s New York skyscraper, Trump Tower, a move that could directly funnel government money into the president’s business interests.

The U.S. military agency is “working through appropriate channels . . . to acquire a limited amount of leased space in Trump Tower,” Lt. Col. J.B. Brindle, a Pentagon spokesman, told The Washington Post in a statement late Tuesday.

“The space is necessary for the personnel and equipment who will support the POTUS at his residence in the building,” Brindle said.

The space will be separate from the Secret Service detail that is routinely based in Trump’s signature midtown tower, where his private company, the Trump Organization, is headquartered and where he owns a lavish triplex penthouse.

The Matthew Shepard Act was adopted as an amendment to S. 1390 (the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2010) by a 63-28 cloture vote on July 15, 2009.[55] At the request of Senator Jeff Sessions (an opponent of the Matthew Shepard Act), an amendment was added to the Senate version of the hate crimes legislation that would have allowed prosecutors to seek the death penalty for hate crime murders,[56] though the amendment was later removed in conference with the House.[57]

I think a worthwhile line of discussion would be that Warren was discussing the AG nominee, rather than a Senator. In addition, invoking rule 19 would put the kabosh on any debate about Sessions. Finally, and this would be the most preposterous, Warren could have tried to invoke rule 19 on McConnell for impugning her.

Foreign Policy In Focus: Trump’s Travel Ban: The View from One Permanently on U.S. Immigration’s Watch List
Trump’s ban isn’t about national security. It’s about race, religion, and cultural exclusion.

As a citizen of the Philippines who’s been detained and subjected to questioning and “secondary screening” almost every time I’ve entered the United States, I feel much sympathy for those whose freedom of movement has been violated by Donald Trump.

There’s a difference in our situations though. While my being temporarily detained on almost every occasion probably stems from my long record of arrests from leading protests in the United States against the Marcos dictatorship in the 1970s and 1980s, Trump’s controversial travel ban has nothing to do with vetting visitors.

Visa holders, refugees, and U.S. permanent residents from the seven predominantly Muslim countries on the list are already among the people most tightly and comprehensively vetted by U.S. immigration and intelligence authorities, so it’s hard to understand how Trump’s move will bring added security.

It’s about Immigration, Stupid

What this is all about isn’t national security. It’s about keeping America Snow White and Prince Charming Christian.

It’s about immigration, in short.

And it’s the opening salvo of Trump’s determined effort to make religion a criterion for becoming part of American society. Whenever he pronounced the three words “radical Islamic terrorist” during his presidential campaign, he always put the stress on the second word, “Islamic,” and continually attacked former President Barack Obama’s refusal to dignify his demagogical effort to promote the idea that Islam promotes terrorism.

Trump’s is a politics of exclusion, and immigration policy is his most direct method of carrying this out.

He’s building a wall to keep out Mexican workers, but let’s face it: “Mexican” for him and his followers doesn’t only refer to Mexicans, but to all Latinos. When he attacks China for what he considers unfair trading practices, he’s not just talking about trade. China is also a code-word for the stereotypical crafty Asian taking advantage of the American people. Even children get it, as Asian American youngsters taunted by their peers at school would testify.

About the author:

Walden Bello was chairman of the Philippine House of Representatives Committee on Overseas Workers from 2010 to 2015. He’s been put into secondary screening by U.S. immigration officials almost every time that he’s entered the United States owing to his record of arrests in the U.S. while opposing the Marcos dictatorship in the 1970s and 1980s.

TomsDispatch: It’s a Bird! It’s a plane! It’s Trump in the News!

The Never-Ending Presidency of Donald Trump (Has Barely Begun)

Nineteen months later, Trump’s personality, statements, tweets, speeches, random thoughts, passing comments, complaints, gripes, and of course, actions are the center of everything. One man’s narcissism gains new meaning when inflated to a societal level. Yes, at certain moments — the assassination of John F. Kennedy, O.J. Simpson’s white Bronco chase, the 9/11 attacks — a single event or personality has overwhelmed everything else and taken the news by storm. But never has one person been able to do this through thick and thicker, through moments of actual news and moments when nothing whatsoever is happening to him.

As an example, consider the New York Times, the newspaper that both Donald Trump’s ascendant adviser Steve Bannon and I have been reading faithfully all these years. At the moment, Trump or people and events related to him monopolize its front page in a way that’s beyond rare. He now regularly sweeps up four or five of its six or so top headlines daily, and a staggering six to ten full, often six-column pages of news coverage inside — and that’s not even counting the editorial and op-ed pages, which these days are a riot of Trumpery.

From early morning till late at night, wherever you look in the American media and undoubtedly globally, the last couple of weeks have been nothing but an avalanche of Trumpified news and features, whether focused on arguments, disputes, and protests over the Muslim ban that the new president and his people insist is not a Muslim ban; or the size of his inaugural crowds; or Sean Spicer’s ill-fitting suit jacket; or the signing of an executive order to begin the process of building that “big, fat, beautiful wall” on our southern border; or the cancelled Mexican presidential visit, and the angry or conciliatory tweets, phone calls, and boycotts that followed, not to speak of the 20% tax on imports proposed by the Trump administration (then half-withdrawn) to get the Mexican president to pay for the wall, which would actually force American consumers to cough up most of the money (making us all Mexicans, it seems); or the unprecedented seating of white nationalist Steve Bannon on the National Security Council (and the unseating of the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff); or the firing of the acting director of the Justice Department after she ordered its lawyers not to defend the president’s travel ban; or the brouhaha over the new Supreme Court pick, introduced in an Apprentice-like primetime presidential special; or those confirmation hearing boycotts by Democratic senators; or the threats against Iran or the threat to send U.S. troops into Mexico to take out the “bad hombres down there”… but why go on? You saw it all. (You couldn’t help yourself, could you?) And tell me it hasn’t seemed like at least two months, if not two years worth of spiraling events (and nonevents).

In those never-ending month-like weeks, Donald Trump did the seemingly impossible: he stirred protest on a global scale; sparked animosity, if not enmity, and nationalism from Mexico to Iraq, England to China; briefly united Mexico behind one of the least popular presidents in its history; sparked a spontaneous domestic protest movement of a sort unseen since the Vietnam War half a century ago that shows every sign of growing; insulted the Australian prime minister, alienating America’s closest ally in Asia; and that’s just to begin a list of the new president’s “accomplishments” in essentially no time at all.

So here’s the question of the day: How can we put any of this in context while drowning in the moment? Perhaps one way to start would be by trying to look past the all-enveloping “news” of yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

Washington (CNN)The Senate has silenced Elizabeth Warren.

And by doing so, majority Republicans just handed the liberal firebrand a megaphone — further elevating President Donald Trump’s fiercest and most prominent critic in the Senate and turning her into a Democratic hero.

“They can shut me up, but they can’t change the truth,” Warren later told CNN’s Don Lemon.

Informed Comment: Could Trump stumble into a Mideast War? It has happened before to Headstrong Presidents

Defiance of American interests will be punished, he warns. Sounds like the current transition from the Obama administration to Trump’s? True. But this description also fits what happened when Lyndon Johnson replaced John Kennedy in the White House. We can’t know for certain what would be the consequences of Trump’s emerging policy in the Middle East. However, we do know what was the end-result of LBJ’s policy shift in the Middle East: A war so devastating that its legacy still poisons the fabric of relations in the region today. The history of U.S. involvement in the Middle East during the 1960s should serve as a warning sign.
Same as Obama, Kennedy believed in reaching out to those that express hostility toward the U.S. and reasoning with them. Putting money in the pockets of Third World Leaders seemed to Kennedy like a good way to cultivate good will towards America. The U.S.’s foreign aid budget grew dramatically under Kennedy. Looking at the Middle East, and the wars that tore it apart, made Kennedy declare that the region needed less bombs and more tractors.
Same as Obama, Kennedy made a bold move by reaching out to a regional hegemon that criticized Washington sharply. Gamal Abd al-Nasser’s Egypt strived to lead the Arab world in the same way that Iran today wants to unite the region’s Shias. Rather than confront Nasser, Kennedy made a bold move. He offered Nasser subsidized wheat to the tune of $400 million. The result? Nasser promised to put the Arab-Israeli conflict ‘in the ice box’ and honored his commitment. The Egyptian dictator also moderated his anti-American rhetoric considerably.
When Kennedy was assassinated in November 1963, Lyndon Johnson entered the White House with a new doctrine. He was not only a veteran politician but also a wealthy businessman who built a small media empire In Texas, his home state, using political connections. Johnson deemed bribing America’s detractors into cooperation wasteful and ineffectual. If Third World leaders wanted to get something from the U.S. they had to exhibit their loyalty. Johnson was not enamored with the idea of giving subsidized wheat to developing countries and believed that Nasser was a regional bully. By 1966 he completely closed the spigot of American economic aid to Egypt.

Here’s the source article: HAS CHINA BEEN PRACTICING PREEMPTIVE MISSILE STRIKES AGAINST U.S. BASES?

You’ve probably heard that China’s military has developed a “carrier-killer” ballistic missile to threaten one of America’s premier power-projection tools, its unmatched fleet of aircraft carriers. Or perhaps you’ve read about China’s deployment of its own aircraft carrier to the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea. But heavily defended moving targets like aircraft carriers would be a challenge to hit in open ocean, and were China’s own aircraft carrier (or even two or three like it) to venture into open water in anger, the U.S. submarine force would make short work of it. In reality, the greatest military threat to U.S. vital interests in Asia may be one that has received somewhat less attention: the growing capability of China’s missile forces to strike U.S. bases. This is a time of increasing tension, with China’s news organizations openly threatening war. U.S. leaders and policymakers should understand that a preemptive Chinese missile strike against the forward bases that underpin U.S. military power in the Western Pacific is a very real possibility, particularly if China believes its claimed core strategic interests are threatened in the course of a crisis and perceives that its attempts at deterrence have failed. Such a preemptive strike appears consistent with available information about China’s missile force doctrine, and the satellite imagery shown below points to what may be real-world efforts to practice its execution.

This some scary shit, folks:

A 2015 RAND study said that by 2017 (i.e., now) China could field about 1,200 conventionally armed short-range ballistic missiles (600-800 km range), 108 to 274 medium-range ballistic missiles (1000 to 1500+ km), an unknown number of conventional intermediate-range ballistic missiles (5,000 km), and 450-1,250 land attack cruise missiles (1500+ km). RAND also estimated that improvements in the accuracy of China’s ballistic missiles may allow them to strike fixed targets in a matter of minutes with an accuracy of a few meters. RAND assesses that key U.S. facilities throughout Japan could already be within range of thousands of difficult-to-defeat advanced ballistic and cruise missiles. Even U.S. bases on the island of Guam could be within range of a smaller number of missiles (See Figure 1).

Trump being “edited up” in the Russian press to sound more statemanlike:

Now, perhaps, it’s time for Russia to return the favor with a glowing portrayal of the new U.S. President. So how exactly is Trump faring in the Russian press?

“Here in Russia, Trump is being translated at a higher register, so he sounds much better, much more statesmanlike, and much more coherent in Russian than he does in English,” says Michele Berdy, a columnist who writes about Russian language, culture, and translation for The Moscow Times and Russian Life, as well as a Russian translator.

“For example, in the tweet about Australia, the “dumb deal” was — when back-translated — more like “hellish deal” or “damn deal” — which sound a bit more adult than “dumb deal,” says Berdy.

“The “bad hombres” were “bad guys.” And so on,” Berdy adds.

Greets and saluts from the resistance. Warren got her Coretta Scott King on and the angry white guys got angry that she violated an arcane rule that the angry white guys have no problem violating when it suits them (IOKIYAR). Of course, the fact that King’s letter impugned the character and judgment of the racist Sessions is what gives the GOP fits encapsulates the entire state of politics in 2017.

Women stand up for their rights, and are swatted down by the misogynists.
Minorities stand up for their rights, and angry white guys complain that their rights are being diminished (because they don’t have the hegemony that they once did).

Meanwhile, Bannon/Trump are still droning on about how crime rates are at multiyear highs, when it’s actually the opposite. Multidecade lows - both as far as rates and overall figures. But Bannon/Trump don’t care about facts. They simply want their supporters to feel unsafe so that Bannon/Trump can swoop in and curb civil and voting rights.

The Muslim ban is just one example. Bannon/Trump are lying every time they open their mouths about how the program works and would keep Americans safe. Yet when it came time to put up in the 9th Circuit, their lawyers had to admit they had nothing.

That just doesn’t happen. Ever. Even when you don’t have much of a case, you don’t go admitting that you’re not convincing the court.

Bannon/Trump go off on how the courts are wrong and making the nation less safe, all while showing complete befuddlement over how the separation of powers works:

At the same time, Bannon/Trump are showing they have no clue what civil forfeiture is, and are letting their fascist flags fly.

Authoritarian. Ignorant. Misogynistic. Anti-reality/anti-fact/anti-science.

This is the GOP as it stands today.

The topper is that this morning Yemen revoked permission for the US to carry out airstrikes/missions in Yemen. That, in a nutshell, makes the US less safe thanks to Trump.

But… you know.. emails.

One of the objects LGF sends comes from fonts.google.com

When I allow that object to run on my computer, it changes the font to something so compact and small I need reading glasses to view the site on my computer (my bifocals are insufficient).

Thus my browser is set to block that object.

Question: Does blocking that object cause difficulties for LGF (in the way it runs on the back end) or for Mr. Johnson (perhaps depriving LGF of needed revenue or something)?

Since I am computer illiterate the answer would need to be pretty simplistic.

It’s too bad that Dark Falcon left … I did enjoy discussions with him (though I joined only shortly before he left). He seemed to be reasonable, if very conservative.

It would appear reasonable left the building though. I would hope he came to his senses and returned, but as people continue to post his tweets here, what they say seems that is increasingly unlikely.

If someone is still chatting with him on Twitter, you can pass along that I miss his perspective here. (That perspective does seem different on Twitter than it did on LGF.)

re: #285 Anymouse

Programming question about Little Green Footballs:

One of the objects LGF sends comes from fonts.google.com

When I allow that object to run on my computer, it changes the font to something so compact and small I need reading glasses to view the site on my computer (my bifocals are insufficient).

Thus my browser is set to block that object.

Question: Does blocking that object cause difficulties for LGF (in the way it runs on the back end) or for Mr. Johnson (perhaps depriving LGF of needed revenue or something)?

Since I am computer illiterate the answer would need to be pretty simplistic.

Answer: No

Though I don’t understand why your computer would take the font and make it microscopic.

Blocking it only prevents Google from sending the fonts to you. Your browser will provide another, more generic font as a replacement. And AFAIK the Google fonts are free.

Money!

[Embedded content]

Jesus Christ. That article. Wow. Hollande call a disaster.

Still, not all of Trump’s phone calls have gone off the rails.

The trick to a good call with Trump is less about policy agreement than personal chemistry, said two people familiar with some of the world leader talks.

For example, New Zealand Prime Minister Bill English began his Sunday evening call with Trump by thanking the president for taking the time to talk during the Super Bowl and chatting about New Zealand golfer Bob Charles, said someone briefed on the call. The person said that set the tone for an amicable conversation, even though English went on to express disagreement with Trump’s executive order restricting travel from seven predominantly Muslim countries.

And, when the politics and the personalities mesh, the calls can become mutual admiration societies, as was the case with Trump’s call during the transition with Milos Zeman, the president of the Czech Republic.

Zeman is a hardliner on both immigration and Iran, and he and Trump found common ground on those issues, but also hit it off personally in a big way, said a Czech political operative briefed on the call.

Trump told Zeman “you’re my type of guy,” and invited him to the White House repeatedly during the course of the conversation (a visit was subsequently, but tentatively, scheduled for April). “We expected it to go well, but it was surprising how well it went. The chemistry was very good,” said the Czech operative.

IIRC, Charles uses Google fonts for all of the icons on comments. If you block them your icons will turn into letters instead of graphic representations of links, quotes, etc.

Unless you’ve got all the functions of the reply window memorized, you’ll lose your place pretty quickly.

Anymouse  Feb 8, 2017 • 7:05:32am

I am now using the latest version of Internet Explorer in Windows 10. (I presume Microsoft Edge would work the same way.)

The text is significantly larger and more widely spaced. I am assuming that the problem is with my settings in Firefox.

When I am less lazy I will go into my settings and see if I can figure it out.

LGF runs a bit more slowly in IE11, but the text is much easier to read.

Well, President Reagan managed to get through his second term with what we now recognise as Altsheimer’s (spelling) disorder). He however had more competent advisors. Mr. Trump was a train wreck right out of the gate.

Rather than competent advisors who could take a person who knows little about government, a whole bunch of people with other agendas than good governance have attached themselves to him, and the Republicans think they can control him to get their agenda through.R

I don’t know what it would take to convince the House and Senate GOP that they are going to be in the crosshairs as well as the Judiciary. If nothing else, you’d think they would want to preserve their own power … Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan and all the rest don’t see they are going to be targeted as soon as President Bannon and SMOTI are done with the Judiciary.

One hallmark of authoritarian regimes is calling back to a “golden era” of greatness that they will take their country back to. Mussolini promised the people of Italy that he’d bring back the greatness of Rome. The term “Third Reich” was meant to invoke the imagery of Bismarck and the glorious German Empire that had once kicked in France’s face. And Putin (contrary to expectations) keeps trying to sell this fantasy of returning the glory days of the Russian Empire and the power it once had.

The problem Trump is experiencing is his rhetoric is suited for a country that’s stuck in the midst of an economic morass with rampant job loss, moribund economy, and catastrophic inflation. His bullshit has a short shelf-life, which will expire as we move into his administration and the rubes realize that jobs aren’t coming back.

re: #357 Targetpractice

It’s not that the jobs aren’t coming back—it’s that there are too many people.

How does the world employ 7.5 billion people?

I think we may be at the point where trumps negative tweets actually raises stock value in a given company. With one cavaet; if they are government contractors where trump has influence in their getting business. The reason the Boeing (or Lockheed, I don’t recall) tanked is that donnies tweet about it was something he could control. I do not think this will touch Nordy stock. At all.

I could not help myself and got dragged into a political debate on FB over an anti-Betsy DeVos posting from my nephew, arguing with some fellow who thought it was a good thing…I know I should not.

I did post a Brawndo label and commented that “We have come one step closer to making this our national beverage.”

I find the role of government best used when it is making business inefficient. By that I mean if there is one company (lets say Comcast) that has a corner on the market they will only have 1 accountant office, 1 sales office etc. If government were to split up Comcast and make 100 smaller companies out of it each of those new entities would each need an accountant, a sales staff etc and thus employ more people overall. So it can be done but not with unfettered capitalism.

I also miss KT. As much as the opposition lives in their bubble insulated from facts, we can also find ourselves in a similar situation by failing to recognize how widespread certain views are. You cannot combat what you do not see and cannot develop effective rebuttals if you don’t hear the other side.

An acquaintance of mine (one who believes Hillary would have won if only Bernie were her running mate!) said he knew Trump would win because of all the Trump-Pence signs he saw in PA in places that previously were Democratic. We need to listen and find arguments that can persuade others who are not already on our side.

There are certain areas of “populism” that we need to pay attention to because there are things that are populist thought that affect people’s lives. For example, take Obamacare. Dems ran from it in the prior midterms because they were not paying attention to details, and those details were that Obamacare was not getting high approval ratings because it wasn’t enough. Republican’s painted it as a failure because people didn’t want it, so Dems ran from it.

We don’t push back. We don’t pay attention enough to what matters to people’s lives. Or worse, we attribute the wrong things to what people are actually saying.

Trump won because 1) he is a celebrity who has a reputation as being successful and 2) he was vague to the point that people who wanted change could attribute everything he said to mean anything they wanted it to mean.

It can’t. It can support 7.5 billion people but it cannot employ them. As I’ve said elsewhere, the problem is that courtesy of automation and globalization, there will be fewer and fewer jobs available. The jobs that are a real growth industry, such as caregiver for the elderly, are demanding and don’t pay well. And most industry actually requires a large consumer base to be profitable. No one has figured out how to handle this.

It’s really awful what they’re going through, and I sympathize with their plight. It’s just that they need to realize that they have to change and adapt. They can’t expect their offspring to do the same job they’ve once held comfortably for decades. What’s telling is that immigrants are better at extolling the values of education and progression to their children than the native-born people here.

They also need to realize that the GOP is NOT going to help them progress and make something of themselves. The Democrats are more likely to provide them with the tools needed to adapt and learn new skills to ensure they don’t get left behind.

The Appalachians is one area that even Bill Clinton tried to attract investment in back in the late 90s, at the height of the economic boom.

It can be handled, if we could break the corporate stranglehold on policy making. One option could be a universal basic income. If that’s too socialistic, we could enact higher minimum wages and make it easier to unionize and engage in collective bargaining. There is no iron law that says caregiving for the elderly has to be low paying.

And to be fair, this isn’t just limited to America.

The UK has a similar problem with former industrial towns that can not replicate the “success” of the post-war years. Northern towns like Leeds, where a lot of British Pakistanis live of course, are no less immune from the same problems that plague white working-class Brits.

Only issue is that those factories were aided by artificial growth. With the case of automotive factories, they were churning out garbage vehicles to other former British colonies aka The Commonwealth. Once competition opened up, those factories of folklore were no longer effective because no one wanted poorly-built and rusted out piece of shit British cars when they could get better.

I don’t want the American auto industry to undergo yet another era of mediocre and rubbish-built vehicles that no one wanted. Anyone remember the “Malaise era” in the 80s and the garbage vehicles that came out of it?

Programming question about Little Green Footballs:

One of the objects LGF sends comes from fonts.google.com

When I allow that object to run on my computer, it changes the font to something so compact and small I need reading glasses to view the site on my computer (my bifocals are insufficient).

Thus my browser is set to block that object.

Question: Does blocking that object cause difficulties for LGF (in the way it runs on the back end) or for Mr. Johnson (perhaps depriving LGF of needed revenue or something)?

Since I am computer illiterate the answer would need to be pretty simplistic.

I am late to your post and it probably been pointed out to you, but you can increase the view size/zoom-in/zoom-out setting of your browser. Click on the three dots in Chrome or the three bars in Google up in the right hand corner of the window. You will see both a + sign and a - sing with a percentage number, usually 100%, the default. They want what they once had and what they will never have again in the same way.

Rude Pundit posted about this yesterday.

Over at CNN’s website, there’s a piece titled “Trump gives America’s ‘poorest white town’ hope.” It’s about Beattyville, Kentucky, a town that’s on the ass end of nowhere in Appalachia and a place that used to rely on coal mining until that dried up sometime in the George W. Bush administration (and, no, it wasn’t mean ol’ white-hating, tree-huggin’ Obama that did it). And these dirt poor fuckers, addicted to opioids, racist up to their tits, and utterly reliant on the government for welfare, health care, and most of the jobs in the area, believe that Donald motherfuckin’ Trump is gonna be their savior.

The whole article is a look at how liberal policies, you know, shit that was done by Democrats, have pretty much been the only things keeping the townspeople alive and how goddamned deluded they are to that fact. For instance, “Beattyville residents want jobs, especially ones that pay more than the minimum wage of $7.25 an hour. They think if anyone can bring jobs back, it’s Trump.” It’s so blindingly stupid and counter to everything that Trump and Republicans talk about. You know what’s one way to make sure that you don’t get a minimum wage of $7.25 an hour? You raise the goddamned minimum wage, you know, like most Democrats want.

On and on the article goes. We learn that “57% of households receive food stamps and 58% get disability payments from Social Security.” And since hope is something that knows no rationality, “‘I hope [Trump] don’t take the benefits away, but at the same time, I think that once more jobs come in a lot of people won’t need the benefits,’ says [25 year-old Amber] Hayes, who currently receives about $500 a month from government assistance. She’s also on Obamacare.”

What do you say to Amber? Do you tell her that believing that Trump will create more jobs is as much a fantasy as Hillary Clinton’s murders? Do you say that, if the Affordable Care Act is repealed, she’s fucked, as she is if Paul Ryan’s budget, with cuts to government assistance programs, gets passed?

They believe that Trump is some kind of demi-god who will magically create jobs and make their lives better. “‘I believe he wants to take care of us, the little people,’ says [a] gas station manager. ‘I think he’s going to quit giving money to all these other countries and take care of America. I truly do.’” No, you dumb shit, he’s gonna give the money to himself, his family, and his friends. If a few coins drop on the floor for you to scrounge for, well, there you go.

Probably because it is set at 100% view.

I bet your Firefox has been set lower. Sometimes it happens by accident.

Wharton called. They want Trump’s degree back.

How he doesn’t understand basic macroeconomics is beyond me. That he asked a general (who has ties to Russia) instead of his business/economy people - like Mnuchin or other tax people shows he doesn’t know or trust anyone beyond his small cabal of cronies.

Or he is suffering early dementia. He may be asking something unrelated to a person his mind knows, but the thinking is all crossed up. I am starting to believe what others have speculated…he may in the beginning of Alzheimer disease. I don’t know much about how it manifests, but I wonder if pressure of the job, his ratings going down, SNL bugging him, etc., is going to hasten it’s characteristics and more and more it will become evident.

OH MY DOG..
I just remembered the Atlanta area terror scare…
Prosecutor: ‘Patriot’ placed pipe bombs in park to rouse America - CNN

September 17, 2015
“…That was what Michael Sibley told investigators in March, more than four months after he left two partially assembled pipe bombs by a tree perched on a hill in a park in an Atlanta suburb, according to an FBI affidavit filed in federal court. The devices were inside a backpack that, among other things, included copies of the Quran and the book, “The Rape of Kuwait.”

“Sibley stated he is a ‘patriot’ and he felt no one was paying attention to what was going on in the world,” an FBI agent wrote in the affidavit. “Sibley felt if he placed the package in a Roswell, (Georgia), park then people would get that this type of activity could happen anywhere.”…”

“…They state that Sibley used his computer to research how to make a bomb, eventually putting two devices together in his garage. The U.S. attorney’s office called them “two completely constructed pipe bombs” with nails and screws taped to the outside and ready for remote detonation, though there was no power source to set it off.

He put these devices in a backpack he bought at a garage sale and scrawled on it the name “Mina Khodari, … because it looked foreign,” the affidavit said.

Also in the backpack were the Quran and the other book, inside which were the schedule of the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and the area’s transportation system, MARTA, as well as Jewish center locations, according to the affidavit.

“Sibley stated he placed these items in the books because he knew law enforcement would consider them soft targets,” the FBI agent wrote, referring to the subway system and a Falcons game.

On November 4, 2014, the backpack was set by a tree alongside a hilly trail in Roswell’s Vickery Creek Park in the Chattahoochee River National Recreations Area…”

He received a two year prison sentence. I shit you not…

That’s exactly what they expect. And that’s the problem; inability to face reality. It’s better to have a dream than face reality.

Here’s my best example. I have several unchecked lottery tickets. As long as I don’t check them I might be a millionaire. Once I check them and realize that I didn’t win, there’s that damn reality setting in. So I check them every few months.

Right now, I could be a millionaire!

Nah. It is just easier to piss and moan than to have a dream and face reality.

Dreams are good as far as I know…that to me is shooting for something you want like a goal. Reality is keeping your dream in check so you don’t just dream but stay on a path to get a goal.

Much easier to turn on FOX News and say “gaddamned shrieking Hillary called me Dee-plorable.”

Just stumbled across this rather interesting read on the old slave taxes. I’ve always wondered why (beyond the stock “racism” answer) southerners who didn’t own slaves or had small farms supported the confederate clause, this explains some of it:

“It holds the land tax to very low levels because most of the revenue comes from the slave tax,” said J. Mills Thornton, a retired University of Michigan professor and historian of the South. “The result is that small farmers pay virtually no direct taxes.”

That gives a little bit of context to Atwater’s famous line too. Even the poor white farmers benefited, economically, from slavery (and later Jim Crow).

I don’t see flab or a muffin top.

Wasn’t listening because my friend turned the sound down…but she had a tiny, normal bit of skin pinched by her tight shorts gathered above her waste.

Whenever I see or hear someone making a comment like that I can just imagine the body type making it.

Not pretty. Sad.

What’s big increase? From where? Going from 0 to 10,000 is a huge percent gain, but as percentage of total immigration it barely registers.

Wasn’t that a SNL skit?

And to be fair, didn’t Harry Truman write a scathing reply to a critic of his daughter’s singing performance? Of course, he didn’t compose the letter during a security briefing.

The review ran in the Washington Post. Truman was so outraged, so incensed, so determined to get revenge on the paper that… he cancelled his subscription.

I really wish we had something like that here - I saw a Czech version many years ago in Prague and a version called “Sedmička” (Seven, as in the cheapest thing is 7 Kč) turns up from time to time, but nothing really like a well-established chain of stores or anything.

The President should be sitting in a cell. I suppose all the wingnut fake controversies will help deflect for this criminal President, after the RWNJs had so many fantasies about any good President being a criminal just because he won’t pander to bigots.

That is how I got back into model building as an adult: wandered into a resale shop that had a whole wall of WW2 armor for 79 cents a pop, so I bought a half dozen of each model…

I keep hoping the GOP is giviing Trump the rope he needs to hang himself, but their own self interest prevents them from ever acting on his actions. Only when they know they will suffer more from supporting him than prosecuting him will they change.

An Idaho judge who said a man who raped a 14-year-old girl could be released on probation if he agreed not to have sex outside of wedlock also linked the case to a breakdown of morality in the social media age, adding: “If I had my way, I would eliminate the internet.”
