I’m just going to plug my Paged response to an article by Joe Carter of the uber-conservative Calvinist-tinged organization “The Gospel Coalition.” The original article was called “Beware of the Broken Wolves.”

So, let’s get back to this idea that psychiatrists think Trump has a definite (mental) problem.
Those pair of tweets have to exhibit either an inability to recognize when one is disproving oneself, or Trump is intentionally trolling people.
In those tweets he wants to simultaneously call news outlets “fake” while pushing a story (a recent poll) by a couple of them as true.
He wants something to be true and false at the same time.
This is either a mental disorder, or as I alluded, he is intentionally trolling or gaslighting America.

Downstairs I linked to the Weird History podcast archives. They are currently doing a series on fascist Italy.
In trying to define fascism, at least what it was, the host wrestles with the idea that it can’t be simply a collection of rational dogmas.
Rather, that the central tenet of fascism, as a form of ultra-nationalism, is emotional in nature.
When I compare Trump to fascists I think that is one of the parallels I’d like to draw. Trump doesn’t have to be rational because his movement and his supporters don’t base their support on rational ideas. Rather, this is an emotional appeal.

And judging by that ABC poll going around, Trump voters absolutely fucking love this and will not budge, ever, ever, whatsoever. Meanwhile we have Bernie or busters who seem still intent on treating Trump as the lesser of two evils long as it means they get to purge the Dems of anyone with any sort of ‘Clinton taint’ on them, and they don’t care how much we get forced into the wilderness, long as they ‘win’.

Or, on a somewhat less-snarky level, a concerted campaign by virtually the entire Republican Party and its enabling RW media to try to convince the public that any economic downturn is entire the fault of eight years of “bad” economic policy by President Obama and Democrats, and only a swift and rigorous application of “serious” policies (I.e. It’s not that snarky. Points one and two will certainly be used by Trump (not the Italian suit part, but then, why the hell not?).

They’re just following in the footsteps of their ideological predecessors. The Communist Party of Germany was a constant source of friction in the early efforts to oppose the rise of the Nazi Party because they absolutely refused to accept anything short of a worker uprising. Post-war, they tried to blame the right-wing parties for the division, accusing them of having rejected proposals for a united front.

The GOP took the Clinton surplus, flushed it down the toilet with the Bush Tax Cuts, then blamed the resulting downturn on the “War on Terror” while insisting that the tonic the economy needed to get moving again was another round of tax cuts. And they got away with it for nearly 4 years because of the Housing Bubble that they took total credit for when they thought it would last forever. But (of course) as soon as the Bubble popped, suddenly they were the canaries in the coal mine, screaming out the need to regulate the banking industry but foiled at every turn by a sinister conspiracy of Democrats.

re: #47 Skip Intro
This gets me back to the broader theme of nationalism, and why such a movement, or movements, or concepts, assert themselves now and then.
Mostly, I think, those who look at these things conclude it is based around the human need to identify. We need an identity, something to say what we are.
This of course is one of the conflicts between socialism and fascism. Socialism looks at people as members of groups (classes), and these groups are trans-national. Fascism defines people by the nation-identity.
Why we humans need an identity is probably a nebulous problem, maybe rooted deep into our primate nature.
But, we have this need, and it expresses itself.
When plied constructively we can use an identity to support productive means. Political parties can be one such identity.
But what we here of course worry over is the rise of hyper-nationalism. Trump has used this urge to his advantage. I think Americans of otherwise differing ideas about what America ought to be have blasted Trump on his ultra-nationalism (e.g., the Wall.)
However, what Trump knows is what is also known by advertising - it is possible to affect people’s decisions through mechanisms such as repetition, imagery, and words.
Trump’s damage to the US has so far been slowed by our sheer momentum, our size and nested institutions keep us from doing too much too quickly.
Yet I still see on my Facebook wall the same people over and over repeating the same stupid memes, about Obama, Clinton, Muslims, etc. All intended to scare people into thinking the “other” is about to get them.
So the problem remains that some large fraction of America is susceptible to the machinations of Trump and the urge towards putting nationalism at the center of life.

Isn’t it also a form of purity being nudged to vote for a person that has a “D” behind their name even if you don’t like the person’s stand?
Bottom line it comes down to what people actually vote for. So, if too many women do not like Mello and don’t vote for him, are they now not Democratically pure?
That word purity can mean a lot. It all depends on how it is viewed by an individual.

re: #329 ObserverArt
Let me get this straight.
If a bunch of moderate Republicans get sick of Trump taking control of the party and they decide to put a “D” by their name, but they hold onto some conservative thinking like being against abortion (not pro-choice…big difference) it’s okay because then we get some more “D”s in office?
Because in a way I think that is a bit how this is being seen. People are suspicious of Mello from what I can tell and with good reason.
How many other parts of the long-standing Democratic party do we all need to consider chucking so we can have some more Democrats in office?
re: #75 ObserverArt
Isn’t it also a form of purity being nudged to vote for a person that has a “D” behind their name even if you don’t like the person’s stand?
If you’re going to cast someone out of the “D” party for such a stance, then yes, I suppose you could say this too would be a test.
But let’s hope that is not how things are done in reality.

If you’re going to cast someone out of the “D” party for such a stance, then yes, I suppose you could say this too would be a test.
But let’s hope that is not how things are done in reality.
Red lines - if you’re going to draw them then count the cost.
I am old enough and have a grasp of history enough to also know this is also a very big part of the Democratic party.
Sometimes off we go into the weeds on minutiae of character and detail of ideals and lose sight of getting something done instead of giving up because we can’t agree on whether a sentence should end in a period or an exclamation.
Even the Russian know it! (Exclamation, no fucking period)
On the road again…

I hereby apologise for actively campaigning for a Democrat in my own state. As I said, I won’t mention the candidate in that backwater city any more.
good fucking grief…backwater purity pony is apparently a REAL FUCKING THING!
Ah, I see the Airing of Grievances has started early this evening. When do we move to the Feats of Strength?
Blue Dog Dems may not be perfect but they are a whole lot better than a real Republican. The only way D’s will take control of the Senate or the House is by electing those who are electable in Red States. Let’s do what is possible for now; if we try for the ideal, we are no better than the Bernie Bros.

They’ve destroyed Planned Parenthood, women’s rights, gay rights, ACA…
hell…pretty much anything that is not business-friendly.
All because Blue Dog Dems in Kentucky have 2 platforms: no abortion and hate teh gheys….

Right about now.
Alright, people, that’s ENOUGH. There’s room in the Democratic party for everybody. We all have our own hot-button issues, and what is an acceptable stance for one person is unacceptable to many others. Point of the matter is, let’s not get into the BernieBros’ mode of running around with our noses in the air, claiming that we’re RIGHT, dammit, and everybody else is wrong. There’s room to disagree and if the candidate’s stance is unclear or based on incomplete information, we can always, you know, ASK. BOTH sides here are arguing over purity ponies, and it needs to stop. We don’t have time or energy to waste debating whether Millo is a Democrat or an asshole or both. Let’s spend that time figuring out whether his abortion stance is a legitimate issue or something he is willing to compromise on, and move on.
re: #83 Anymouse
Omaha is one of the largest cities in the USA, but okay. We don’t really need Democrats here, because backwater.
Good thing we weren’t talking about my race in 2014, where I beat the gun shop owner in a town of 128. Just another backwater that doesn’t matter. The only freakin’ Democrat in ninety thousand square miles in office.
I wouldn’t give a shit if it was Seattle, and I basically grew up there. Yes, I know a plausible argument can be made that mayor is a stepping stone office. That doesn’t change the fact that this wouldn’t be on anyone’s radar if Bernie hadn’t shunned and talked shit about Ossoff on election day or blamed the DNC for Thompson’s loss in Kansas when the DNC gave more than his own PAC. He’s using the Omaha race to enforce his own particular brand of purity politics where the ONLY issue that matters is strict adherence to Bernie’s economic platform.
Also while the bill Mello co-sponsored was mischaracterized and I took issue with that, his overall record on abortion is still seriously awful. I don’t blame those voters who do not trust his sudden policy shift towards choice one bit. Frankly it smells like a cynical bullshit move necessitated by Omaha’s more liberal voting base.

I think most folks here are capable of making the pragmatic and practical decision when in the voting booth.
But everyone is going to have their own red line. Something that absolutely cannot be supported.
I don’t begrudge people that because I have mine too. For the most part, the Democratic Party aligns fairly well with mine, so I tend to vote D. (The GOP, on the other hand, crosses it right and left and back again like a fucking zig zag.) But there are still principles that I hold where I don’t compromise. End of story.
Since I’m not a politician, I can get away with that.
Call me a cynic (please, it’s my only defining characteristic), but we always find ourselves compromising when it comes to our vote. In no election I’ve taken part in in the past 14+ years have I found myself voting for somebody whom I agreed with 100%. More than once I’ve had to take a candidate at their word that their past beliefs were in the past and the guy I was voting for was a different person. The alternative is to just sit on the sidelines and whine that there’s no candidate for me because I refuse to budge.
And with my mini-tirade over, I am going to go check on the feline overlords and make sure they have food and water, then pour myself a nice stiff drink. Tension and strife among the Lizardim is not something I handle well.

And this is where you lose people. Not one single person is saying they don’t want Democrats in your state.
But they are saying they do want Democrats in the state.
And you missed my point.
My point is there is concern about Mello and you seem to want to pass by those concerns to get a person in office that has a letter D.
People are voting their concerns in this debate and you want to discount it now. Who is asking for their version of purity?
Do we want Democrats? Sure do, but they should be Democrats. They should buy into one of the damn fundamentals of the party since the 70s. People see his stand and they go whoa…uh, what is this? Can I trust him. Red flags.
Abortion and women’s rights are under attack and women are concerned, but you seem to think it does not matter if we get this guy into office. It matters. People are saying it right here, right now…no vote needed and from their hearts.
Accept it and work from there.
Evening all. Another 12hr shift on move…

FWIW, my backwater is loads smaller than Anymouse’s, has crappy roads, no municipal services (oh, we don’t have a city here…), also has no cell phone service, and a way WAY slower internet connect than he does.
OTOH, I’ve got really good spring water all over the farm, so there’s that perk.

We’ve had a few people in the history of this state that were wrongfully executed.
Asked her position on capital punishment, Mrs. Clinton said she did not support abolishing the death penalty, but she did encourage the federal government to rethink it.
“We have a lot of evidence now that the death penalty has been too frequently applied, and too often in a discriminatory way,” she said. “So I think we have to take a hard look at it.”
Mrs. Clinton added, “I do not favor abolishing it, however, because I do think there are certain egregious cases that still deserve the consideration of the death penalty, but I’d like to see those be very limited and rare, as opposed to what we’ve seen in most states.”
Her statement immediately ignited an outcry from some liberals who hoped she would have taken a tougher stance against the death penalty. Mrs. Clinton’s two main Democratic rivals, Senator Bernie Sanders and Martin O’Malley, have called to abolish the death penalty.
In the caucuses, I voted for Sanders, partly because of his stance on the death penalty. (By the time our caucus came round Martin O’Malley was already out.)
I didn’t get the guy who wanted to abolish the death penalty. I voted instead for the woman who doesn’t, despite my own position on the death penalty (I have always opposed it as long as I have been alive).
I’m guessing I need to take a break from political discussion for a while. I will think about what others have noted to me here.

I think this is more worth discussing. The argument over Mello’s stance is worthwhile, but a sidetrack from the real issue. We can and will disagree and debate on the importance of his seeming about-face, what the bill he voted for actually was and whether there was another alternative, and the like. The main thing for us all to focus our ire upon is that Sanders is promoting his own purity pony crusade by crucifying Mello.

I know the old “white wine with fish” trope is usually considered an Unbreakable Commandment (with a slight “out” for rosés, as noted), but I’ve always found that a good light red, e.g. Cotes-du-Rhone or a light Aussie Shiraz, makes a good accompaniment to salmon (virtually the only fish that it works that way) - especially if the salmon is done simply; pan-fired or grilled, say.
Factionalism among parties is hardly new and is probably a necessary part of the political process.
Way back when the progressives in America were the (religious) abolitionists of the 1850’s, the existing political party structure could not accommodate them.
Some people today will think of abortion in a way that slavery was to abolitionists - a red line.
But I repeat myself - count the costs of drawing such a line.
Abortion is already such a line - for Christian fundamentalists in this country. In no small part, the fundamentalists on my Facebook wall who support Trump do so because their religious leaders (e.g., Graham Jr.) say to. And those religious leaders support Trump because they think their anti-abortion beliefs can become law under Trump.
So if abortion already functions as a red-line for the fundamentalists in this country, can it also function as such a line for the Democratic party?
I feel a bit queasy about that. Perhaps some may think I have a luxury in regards to this issue, being male. Maybe, not sure.
As for Bernie and his ego - this has already gone on too long, but I don’t see how it will end until Bernie just gets too old for anyone to listen to him anymore.

I know of no pro-choice person who cares one whit about what any individual feels about abortion. We only demand that our elected lawmakers do not infringe on our rights to our own beliefs and choices. You used the slavery analogy which is a good one. Would you consider compromise on that issue? If a candidate said he believed in slavery but claimed he wouldn’t vote for it, would it not make you question? Is that a red line that would make you queasy?

Well… we (the US) when through almost a century of compromise on the slavery issue. From the revolution, through the Articles of Confederation, then the Constitution, then decades of legal disputes and Congressional laws.
So it took a long time for the issue to work itself out.

Obama on the Art of the Compromise:
Abraham Lincoln. Here’s a guy who didn’t believe in slavery, but his first priority was keeping the union. I’ve got a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation in my office, and if you read through it, most of the document is those states and areas where emancipation doesn’t apply because those folks are allied with the union so they can keep their slaves.
Here’s a wartime President making a compromise around the greatest moral issue that the country ever faced, because he understood that his job was to win the war and maintain the union. Can you imagine how the Huffington Post would have reported on that? It would have been blistering. “Lincoln Sells Out Slaves.” There would be protests, and we’re going to run a third party guy.

re: #141 allegro
This isn’t 100 years ago. This is now. And I still ask the question.
I spend a lot of time working on my genealogy, and I’ve decided that people don’t really change all that much. Changes in society obviously happen, but I guess my point is that the process can be slower than at first glance, and start and end in nebulous segments.
As for me, I’m now a registered “D” in San Diego county. Part of the party is just whacky, and we have our own “backwater” problem here - the Dems tend to not run serious candidates in the rural areas of the county which are controlled by the religious right.
Abortion is not an issue that has deep traction for me. It’s just not my thing. I have no immediate vested interest in the issue. I am not a woman of childbearing age, I have no daughter of such, and I’m not going around impregnating women here and yon.
There is much to say for the privacy of the human, of the importance of protecting the individual from the state. This is the realm of classical liberalism. You want the state to not have to force a woman to undergo an examination. You want the state to not prohibit a woman from getting an abortion. I understand that and concur with the importance of recognizing the decision process of the woman. I am glad the “D” party as such takes a stance on the importance of this liberty. But I also accept that there will be “D” members who have moral/ethical/religious qualms with abortion. I am hoping that the “big tent” can encompass differing views on this.

Washing windows, cleaning things, trying to beat the yard into some sort of shape for the summer, etc. Plus we have an anniversary party coming up in about 6 weeks and while we have a caterer who will handle much of the work, I’ve still got to make the invitations, get all the cards made, addressed and sent, plan centerpieces, and bake a couple cakes.

Joe Biden is a professed Catholic who follows his church in his personal life, but has declared he would not impose his beliefs on other citizens. He has voted against the use of Federal money for abortion. In a Biden-Trump presidential matchup, is a third-party vote preferable?
re: #155 fern01
And the article has to include “both sides” - Barack Obama once visited the Supreme Court.
They never seemed to get into “both sides” when attacking those emails - and many many GOPers have and do use emails outside of their congressional email.
Yeah, before he took office if I recall correctly, and I don’t believe Obama was the subject of hundreds of lawsuits, but the MBF has to be fed.

Hyde Amendment is law right now. Roe v Wade is law of the land.
Hyde Amendment has not imposed Biden’s personal beliefs so far because PP can still provide abortions without federal funds.
If there is a Biden-Trump matchup, I’m going with Uncle Joe.

Really, are you really seriously suggesting that a lizard here would do that?
Yes. Every person who voted for Hillary Clinton (see linked article above at the New York Times on her support of the death penalty). The death penalty was not a big enough issue for them. I would rather have 95% of my issues (Clinton) rather than 0% of my issues (Trump), and try to work for that last 5%.

Wait. Wut?
Seriously Speaker Ryan? You’re talking a government shutdown. Someone in Congress want to explain it to these clueless nitwits that they’re the idiots who are in charge and that any shutdown is entirely on them?
The Freedom Caucus and the extremists in the GOP are pushing this crap again? Why? Because they want more tax cuts? Because Trump wants his fucking wall? Because the GOP wants to defund Planned Parenthood? Because they want to see the end of government as anyone knows it? Because they’re intent on destroying functioning government so that they can demand greater tax cuts because government isn’t working?
These corrosive and destructive asshats are intent on running government into the ground, and they have no one to blame but themselves.
Ryan wants to avoid a shutdown? Simple. Pay the fucking bills and make the appropriations at last year’s level (aka continuing resolutions). Or, pay the bills and appropriate at last year plus COLA.
But this is the GOP, and neither reasonable move makes sense. They want to slash and burn spending, and this is their one chance.
They’ll have no one to blame but themselves when government shuts down - because they cant’ get out of their own way.

Even if they’re good individuals, they enable a lot of structural damage in the House and Senate just through caucus and herd behavior.
This is the main reason I will not vote R even if through some bizarre turn of events they agreed with every one of my policy positions. (Seriously, there’s no way they could do that and not be a D right now.)
Sometimes the line can’t be crossed. Having the R after the name requires too many compromises of the values I hold for me to even consider, because of the herd behavior. That lends weight to the D - a lot - but isn’t an automatic 100% I will enthusiastically campaign for the candidate ticket, because if the person with the D is still willing to compromise away my red lines, I care.
I’m female and still young enough that this has a possibility to not be a simply hypothetical issue. We are desperately trying to keep it in the hypothetical realm but if I needed an abortion, the people involved in that decision are me and mr. klys. Period.
So those are my rights being compromised away. Forgive my red line but there it is. I am willing to take some politicians at their word because their actions have shown that even if their personal beliefs are such that they wouldn’t choose abortion, they will not act on it. That trust has been earned. Others not so much.
Take your personal hot button topic and consider what it would take for you to trust the word of a politician on it. Consider if it were your rights on the line, what compromises you would be willing to have the party offer in order to maintain control. Maybe it’s guns and the ability to own them. Maybe it’s gay marriage. Maybe it’s the ability to not-worship as you choose. What compromises are you willing to offer on something that directly impacts your life and your ability to live it out as you choose?

The last time I went to the Maroon Bells was the last time the federal government was shut down. Gal friend and I had to ditch the car about four miles from Maroon Lake and ride bicycles the rest of the way to Crater Lake Trail. It was magnificent, no people and a few inches of fresh snow with all the aspen trees turning yellow.

I’m tipsy and my phone kept autocorrecting hockey to hickey earlier which led to some really interesting tweets.
But not in the way I intended.

This is brutal: 100 Days of Trump
April 29th, Donald Trump will have occupied the Oval Office for a hundred days. For most people, the luxury of living in a relatively stable democracy is the luxury of not following politics with a nerve-racked constancy. Trump does not afford this. His Presidency has become the demoralizing daily obsession of anyone concerned with global security, the vitality of the natural world, the national health, constitutionalism, civil rights, criminal justice, a free press, science, public education, and the distinction between fact and its opposite. The hundred-day marker is never an entirely reliable indicator of a four-year term, but it’s worth remembering that Franklin Roosevelt and Barack Obama were among those who came to office at a moment of national crisis and had the discipline, the preparation, and the rigor to set an entirely new course. Impulsive, egocentric, and mendacious, Trump has, in the same span, set fire to the integrity of his office.
Trump has never gone out of his way to conceal the essence of his relationship to the truth and how he chooses to navigate the world. In 1980, when he was about to announce plans to build Trump Tower, a fifty-eight-story edifice on Fifth Avenue and Fifty-sixth Street, he coached his architect before meeting with a group of reporters. “Give them the old Trump bullshit,” he said. “Tell them it’s going to be a million square feet, sixty-eight stories.”
This is the brand that Trump has created for himself—that of an unprincipled, cocky, value-free con who will insult, stiff, or betray anyone to achieve his gaudiest purposes. “I am what I am,” he has said. But what was once a parochial amusement is now a national and global peril. Trump flouts truth and liberal values so brazenly that he undermines the country he has been elected to serve and the stability he is pledged to insure. His bluster creates a generalized anxiety such that the President of the United States can appear to be scarcely more reliable than any of the world’s autocrats. When Kim In-ryong, a representative of North Korea’s radical regime, warns that Trump and his tweets of provocation are creating “a dangerous situation in which a thermonuclear war may break out at any moment,” does one man sound more immediately rational than the other? When Trump rushes to congratulate Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for passing a referendum that bolsters autocratic rule in Turkey—or when a sullen and insulting meeting with Angela Merkel is followed by a swoon session with Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, the military dictator of Egypt—how are the supporters of liberal and democratic values throughout Europe meant to react to American leadership?

LOL!
My guess is Trump announced the dinner and some of the SCOTUS justices heard that and said “oh hell no!”
I suspect he got 5 or 6 regrets that they had to wash their hair that night.
I can already predict that this week is going to really suck. Trump’s going to be crazier than ever as his 100-day mark approaches.

OMG we’re talking about a government fucking shutdown again.
Wait.
So what happens if Ryan/congress has to come up with a budget with some democratic appeal in order to get enough votes, and then Trump vetoes it because it doesn’t have everything he wants? Does congress have to come up with a budget that even more democrats like in order to override a veto and avoid a lengthy shutdown?

Time to go weird-out with them. Later, lizards.
My son is obsessed with manual typewriters, though he is not in NM. (Though CO is relatively close by.) He’s in IT, but fascinated with analog stuff like typewriters and vinyl records.
I had an Olivetti portable for years, and while working on the college newspaper, I had a favorite Smith-Corona I preferred using. Took me almost a year to get used to an electric typewriter (IBM Selectric), but hardly anytime to adapt to a computer keyboard. Weird.
