FBI Director James Comey Learned About His Firing From Television News

Politics • Views: 35,285

It may not be the worst aspect of Trump’s Tuesday Night Massacre, but it illustrates the sheer incompetence and cowardice of the Trump gang; FBI director Comey apparently learned he had been fired while he was speaking to FBI employees in Los Angeles, from TV screens showing breaking news reports.

Mr. Comey, who is three years into a 10-year term at the helm of the F.B.I., learned from news reports that he had been fired while addressing bureau employees in Los Angeles. While Mr. Comey spoke, television screens in the background began flashing the news. Shortly after, a letter was delivered to F.B.I. Headquarters in Washington.

Man, that’s ice cold. And treating an FBI director like this, when you’re under investigation for ties to a hostile foreign government, strikes me as a seriously bad idea.

Carried over from the last thread:

I’ve been asking myself, “Why fire Comey now?” It would have been best to wait for Friday. Comey is just leading an investigation, he is not the one sifting through documents and stuff. That will continue as before. The only thing I can come up with is that testimony he was supposed to give Thursday. This effectively puts the kibosh on that and stalls further testimony indefinitely.
If I were the little man in North Korea I would stop everything and let Donald Chump proclaim a foreign policy win. That would really throw Washington into a tizzy.

One thing Trump and the Republicans have in common is class. That and the ability to be asked simple questions and fall apart as they shit all over people and things that have no connection to the questions asked…. Oh, and a vile inner dark empty space where a soul should be. If pond slime got up and walked, or cancer gained a voice and could argue…This is the voice it would speak with. JFC.

The Rude Pundit speaks for me here: rudepundit.blogspot.com

Not scared yet? We no longer have a functioning Justice Department. We don’t have a Congress that will check or balance the president in even the smallest ways. We have a president who doesn’t care about anything other than protecting his orange ass and centralizing all power within him and his small cadres of hellspawn and spunk monkeys. And he’s gonna appoint someone from that cadre to erase the investigations so he can gallivant on with his awful presidency.

In Hell, Richard Nixon rolled his eyes and wondered where the fuck this GOP was back in the 1970s. And then he was dipped back into the shit pit.

Josh Marshall makes a terrifying and persuasive case to me of how terrifying this is and the fact that Rod Rosenstein can no longer be trusted given his complicity in this action.

talkingpointsmemo.com

Concluding with: “There is only one reasonable conclusion that can be drawn from the decision to fire Comey: that there is grave wrongdoing at the center of the Russia scandal and that it implicates the President. As I write this, I have a difficult time believing that last sentence myself. But sometimes you have to step back from your assumptions and simply look at what the available evidence is telling you. It’s speaking clearly: the only reasonable explanation is that the President has something immense to hide and needs someone in charge of the FBI who he believes is loyal. Like Jeff Sessions. Like Rod Rosenstein.”

Agreed, there’s no real hope that anything good will come of this because the people directly responsible for policing Trump’s actions are either actively colluding with him or abetting his actions in the hope of gaining increased power/favors. It’s almost guaranteed that the man who will eventually replace Comey will be either a direct conspirator or a willing patsy.

lawfareblog.com

Make no mistake: The firing of James Comey as FBI director is a stunning event. It is a profoundly dangerous thing—a move that puts the Trump-Russia investigation in immediate jeopardy and removes from the investigative hierarchy the one senior official whom President Trump did not appoint and one who is known to stand up to power. One of the biggest dangers of Comey’s firing is that Trump might actually get away with it, ironically, because of Comey’s unpopularity among Democrats and on the political left.

We warned about this danger immediately after the election.

On November 10, we wrote that that Trump’s firing of Comey would be a “a clear bellwether to both the national security and civil libertarian communities that things are going terribly wrong.” At the time we wrote those words, Comey was deeply unpopular with both the Left, which blamed Hillary Clinton’s defeat on his eleventh hour letter to Congress, and the Right, which criticized his decision to recommend that Clinton not be charged over her handling of government emails. Whatever the merit of Comey’s actions during the campaign, the fact that he managed to anger both sides of the political spectrum demonstrated his storied political independence. And that political independence, we argued, would serve as a critical check against any efforts on the part of President Trump to trample the rule of law.

I disagree. The previous massacre which you reference was Bush firing “principled” members to find a lackey. Comey was always a lackey. Say Comey says an investigation finds something on Trump…who in the government would take action? Trump has the USSC, he has the House and Senate, he obviously has a significant portion of the FBI itself, and he has the deplorables.

Oh wait, are we still operating under the assumption that the Republicans will eventually think something is too far for them? I thought we watched Yates’s testimony yesterday, and the Republican handling thereof?

I have to say. I have never liked the guy. I always thought he was an egotistical asshole.

That’s because that’s what Trump is. NYC metro area school children of a certain age learned this by osmosis while they were growing up (I was one of them).

And yet, it’s the electoral vote that matters. Three million more votes is just running up the score. The Dems needed to win states, not votes.

You go with the electoral system you have, not the electoral system you wish you had. Is the Electoral College fair? I would say no. It is, however, the law of the land.

That’s definitely why. Glad that asshole got rejected. No. but there seems to be a general understanding, even in right-wing law enforcement that this is the kind of thing that Simply Is Not Done.

These are professional investigators. They are very careful in how they build cases. If Trump puts a new head of the FBI in place with orders to gin up any kind of investigation so he can put Clinton in prison, this is not going to end well.

The GOP has a real problem now: If they try to either set aside Mr. Trump with a XXV Amendment solution, the crazification factor of their base will go after established Republican politicians, or if they don’t, they could very well be torn apart in the next election. Fuck me.

I go out for a few hours for a business meeting, and my phone blows up. All my former friends in law enforcement in LA are stunned, angry, disbelieving. Even the ones who are dismissing the Trump/Russia story as a nothingburger where only underlings are dirty are saying things like, “This is criminally stupid. Don’t they realize how this looks? The day after testimony about Trump appointing a Russian spy despite being warned about it, he shitcans the head of the FBI conducting the investigation? Even if he is innocent - this looks guilty as all hell. And that’s what matters now. TV is going to roast his ass.”

No it won’t.

It will do the usual dance of bringing on people from both sides to argue about it and present controversy, and that’s it. It will keep him in the forefront of the news while FOX praises him and gins up hatred of liberals, and while CNN and MSNBC talk about both sides endlessly. And then it will be forgotten in time for the next controversy.

There isn’t going to be an immediate fallout from firing Comey, other than a lot of shouting on cable news channels.

But long term? There are a lot of law-enforcement types who just rocked back on their heels today, and then nodded.

“OK, then. If that’s how we’re going to play this.”

Trump and the nutbar Deplorables are just a small fraction. They cannot organize all this by themselves. And a long, slow, painful investigation into Trump is pretty much inevitable now. Law enforcement knows how to do this.

It’s the same playbook we use when going after a high-line drug dealer. You just start grinding on the fucker. Keep the pressure up. Eventually, they crack.

CHARLESTON, WV (WDTV) — According to the American Civil Liberties Union of West Virginia, a West Virginia journalist was arrested for allegedly asking Tom Price, the Secretary of Health and Human Services, and Kellyanne Conway, Special Counsel to the President of the United States, a question.

WSAZ reports that according to the criminal complaint, Dan Heyman was arrested after “aggressively breaching the Secret Service agents to the point where the agents were forced to remove him a couple of times from the area walking up the hallway in the main building of the Capitol.”

The complaint goes on to say that Heyman caused a disturbance by “yelling questions at Ms. Conway and Secretary Price.”

The Public News Service tweeted Heyman, its producer, is in the South Central Regional Jail, for “causing a disturbance by yelling questions” while Price and Conway were in town.

The news organization’s tweets go on to say “He was trying to ask @KellyannePolls and @SecPriceMD questions when he was arrested.”

The organization claims Heyman was “arrested performing 1st amendment duties.”

Public News Service says the organization is working to bail Heyman out of jail.

The ACLU of West Virginia plans to hold a press conference on the steps of the West Virginia Capitol Building in response to the arrest at 8:45 p.m., Tuesday night.

It’s kinda like asking if any of Pablo Escobar’s people had deserted him in 1992. Answer: no, they hadn’t. But as the government kept up the pressure on Escobar, and picked off the loyalists, one by one, the circle started shrinking.

It takes time. A lot of time. And a lot of pain along the way.

But as the pressure mounts, everyone but the utter fanatics starts to think about their own miserable hides. And then they start to cut side deals.

I think there are a lot of law enforcement guys, both within the FBI, and now down at the local level, who will be helping keep the pressure on. They understand this. That if they were investigating the City Manager, even if it was kinda a shaky investigation and the evidence was more in favor of some of his friends being dirty, firing the Chief of Police who is leading the investigation … *

That, they understand. Right down at a bone-deep level.

This is the kind of thing that sparks a general consensus amongst the LA Chiefs that someone has let their dog off the leash. Time to put him down.

*this has been tried in LA County. It has not worked out well for said City Manager.

Federal prosecutors have issued grand jury subpoenas to associates of former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn seeking business records, as part of the ongoing probe of Russian meddling in last year’s election, according to people familiar with the matter. CNN learned of the subpoenas hours before President Donald Trump fired FBI director James Comey.

How long before Donald Trump attempts to make it a crime to be a member of an opposition party or to publicly speak out against him? “We’ve made a request, to FinCEN in the Treasury Department, to make sure, not just for example vis-a-vis the President, but just overall our effort to try to follow the intel no matter where it leads,” Sen. Mark Warner told CNN. “You get materials that show if there have been, what level of financial ties between, I mean some of the stuff, some of the Trump-related officials, Trump campaign-related officials and other officials and where those dollars flow — not necessarily from Russia.”

Behold ‘tis I the commander
Whose grip controls you all
Resist me not, surrender
I’ll no compassion call
Capture of humanity
(Tyrant) Conqueror of all
(Tyrant) Hideous destructor
(Tyrant) Every man shall fall
Your very lives are held within my fingers
I snap them and you cower down in fear
You spineless things who belly down to slither
To the end of the world you follow to be near
Capture of humanity
(Tyrant) Conqueror of all
(Tyrant) Hideous destructor
(Tyrant) Every man shall fall
Mourn for us oppressed in fear
Chained and shackled we are bound
Freedom choked in dread we live
Since Tyrant was enthroned
I listen not to sympathy
Whilst ruler of this land
Withdraw your feeble aches and moans
Or suffer smite from this my hand
Capture of humanity
(Tyrant) Conqueror of all
(Tyrant) Hideous destructor
(Tyrant) Every man shall fall
Mourn for us oppressed in fear
Chained and shackled we are bound
Freedom choked in dread we live
Since Tyrant was enthroned
My legions faithful unto death
I’ll summon to my court
And as you perish each of you
Shall scream as you are sought
Capture of humanity
(Tyrant) Conqueror of all
(Tyrant) Hideous destructor
(Tyrant) Every man shall fall

Mr. Johnson: It was your article on why you were leaving the right wing that first brought me to Little Green Footballs when I read about it at Huffington Post. I’d never heard of LGF before that article.

It would appear that your article was prescient: predicting the normalisation of fascist apologists and authoritarians.

Since your Website was founded on conservative ideals and policy, that article you wrote was quite the interesting view from inside “Movement Conservative.”

If you’re wondering what your representative has to say about the Comey firing, WaPo has a pretty extensive selection of tweets and statements. Both of my senators were in there.

Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.)

“Regardless of how you think Director Comey handled the unprecedented complexities of the 2016 election cycle, the timing of this firing is very troubling. Jim Comey is an honorable public servant, and in the midst of a crisis of public trust that goes well beyond who you voted for in the presidential election, the loss of an honorable public servant is a loss for the nation. As the chairman of the Judiciary Committee’s Oversight Subcommittee, I have reached out to the Deputy Attorney General for clarity on his rationale for recommending this action.”

That is what needs to happen. I was just talking to my spouse and said it is time for civil disobedience in the streets…blocking federal courthouses etc. Shut it the fuck down. I don’t want to be arrested… but we are at that point.

Off-topic:

My wife went to the Post Office today to mail a package to her brother.

She asked about the eclipse stamps to be issued by the Postal Service and when they would become available.

The postmistress noted that the Post Office is going to release them later in the month in every city and town on the path of the eclipse first, and will allow those towns to use a “first day of issue” cancellation stamp.

That means we’ll get those stamps on the first day of issue. I have a bunch of postcards that are eclipse-themed I intend to send on the first day of issue.

I accept a lot of things about Texas, including the large number of idiots. But some things go over the line. “Texism” is a pretty good term.

It is. It is the shame of the State. Living in one of the blue pimples brings it home every day.

The people running the State are just fucking nut jobs. Science denying, gay baiting, civil rights hating, nut jobs.

The only thing keeping the State from going completely off the deep end is the Speaker of the Texas House, Joe Straus, who is keeping the most rabid Legislation passed by the Texas Senate from even getting into Committee.

Abortion … guns … religion … gays and lesbians … fear fear fear fear fear.

Conservatism as I understand it can always drive voters to the polls from fear (note all the anti same-sex marriage constitutional amendments on state ballots).

Liberalism does not play on fear, thus it is harder to get out the vote.

That has to change. There is one fear that liberals can credibly cite: the destruction of the rule of law and civil liberties.

Back on my own over-worn topic: the reason these old folk gravitate to Fox is because Fox News was designed for them.

Ok, so what does that mean?

It means that Fox News intentionally reifies, and explicitly does not challenge, the religious worldview in which these 65+ grew up.

Part of the obsession behind the wingnuttery is a desperate escape from the critical landscape of academia of the past 150 years or so. The very environment which dismantled the claims of religions, nationalism, etc.

Since the AG has recused himself from the actual investigation, is he still the controlling legal authority in appointing a Special Prosecutor?

Ari Melber was on Lawrence tonight and said the minute Russia is mentioned in anything legal in regards to any component of an investigation, Sessions has to bow out due to his recusal. Yeah, no. Heath Mello signed on to legislation in the Unicameral that was a compromise to a Republican bill to far further restrict abortion rights.

Mr. Mello’s compromise bill to mandatory ultrasounds was a bill that would have doctors note that ultrasounds were available, but entirely voluntary. That was the bill that passed, not the GOP “You Must Get An Ultrasound And Listen To GOP Lies About Abortion” bill.

Is that an ideal bill? No. This isn’t California or Massachusetts. Omaha has exactly one Planned Parenthood office, and Mayor Stothert wants it shuttered. Heath Mello did not. (There are only two offices in the state; the other is in Lincoln.)

I can’t speak for the timing as to when it will be made right though. All I know is this is still early even though some think all of this should have been wiped out by now since Trump is so evil.

It took time to get here. For every action there is a reaction and the force and energy put into building something is the same amount force and energy to take it down. It took since May/June of 2015 until November of 2016 to build the Trump Monster. It could take as long to knock him down.

And I know it’s not CA or MA, you’re getting this from a Kaine constiuent who doesn’t exactly live in a bright blue state and whose last governor in fact tried to push a transvaginal ultrasound law on the state’s women. I’m not disagreeing with you that Mello should have been supported but you did mischaracterize Kaine’s record on abortion since he’s been our governor and senator. That was the issue I had with what you said. HAd nothing to do with how much support Mello got.

And that’s a big fucking fear. Nothing about this is normal. Democrat turnout in 2018 shouldn’t be normal, either.

So no their records are different. Perhaps Mello should have gotten more support. TBH though, there’s finite resources and at the risk of sounding like a jerk, I imagine the DNC has a greater priority on maintaining VA’s governor house and flipping NJ’s than the mayorship of Omaha. I know that’s not fair to he good people of Omaha but it’s how it works. Teh state party isn’t funding the cnadidate I’m working for the house of delegates either, we have a very conservative district. The best thing we can do is local awareness and unfortunately it seems Mello came up short in Omaha.

Senator Kaine says he is personally opposed to abortion as a Catholic, but would not allow that to influence women’s rights.

Heath Mello said the same. But somehow for him it was different, because he (successfully) fought off a much more restrictive abortion bill in a state with a super-majority of Republicans in the legislature.

Is Mr. Mello’s position the ideal liberal position? No. But it is a fuckton better than Mayor Stothert’s.

Too bad for Omaha, they get to keep their wingnut mayor that wants to drive Planned Parenthood out of Omaha and run for the state legislature. I guess Heath Mello wasn’t pure enough, so any wingnut Republican will do here.

Mello, I’ve demonstrated to you actually has a record of voting on abortion restrictions. You were incorrect osay it was the same as Kaine’s. And that’s what I’m trying to tell you. They’re not the same. Kaine’s record since becoming VA’s governor and seator resembles Biden and other prominent Catholic Democrats who are personally opposed to abortion but do not vote affimatively on restrictions, Mello did have that. I’m not saying he’s Satan or shouldn’t have been supported, I’m saying you are wrong to say the two men have the same position.

The objections the activists had with Mello was not his personal beliefs but parts of his voting record. Yes, Omaha is bigger than those cities but tell me how much do you think the DNC honestly spends in those cities? And again I’m not contesting your point about that, I do think their priorities are on what I just brought up with my state and New Jersey in which they have not only gubernatorial mansions in the balance but also state legislatures. My big problem with what you said is that Kaine’s record on abortion resembeld Mello. You were incorrect about that. I know Kaine’s record probably better than most Lizards. I’ve literally been voitng for the guy since I could vote. I’m not even disagreeing with you that Melo was insufficiently supported but I do think that you have this wrong idea that the DNC spends tons of money in those cities you mentioned cities. Building a party presence takes time. Getting a more liberal message out will take time. But the party has to start somewhere. As for how much DNC money goes into all those cities that are smaller than Omaha, you know? I can’t say. The DNC doesn’t really make that information available, which is one reason I don’t give money to the DNC, the DCCC, or the DSCC. I give it to candidates.

1. I was pretty sure I saw something about the DNC officially backing Mello, despite outcry (probably unfairly) about his position on abortion.
2. How much money do you think the DNC actually chips in for the mayoral races in Boston, Minneapolis or Oakland? I suspect that most of the money comes from a combination of local citizens/companies and outside citizens/groups besides the DNC. The DNC doesn’t just back up trucks full of cash to the campaign HQs in these cities.
3. As you noted, Omaha is a large city. The 2nd richest person in the US lives there. If they don’t want their streets to be gravel, the wealthy people of Omaha need to fork over some cash and the city’s voters need to step up and vote out the morons. It’s not up to Minneapolis and Oakland to do it for you.
4. I’m going to reiterate that these people voted for the candidate that gave them gravel roads in a major urban area. Seriously.Think about that for a second. Gravel roads in a city of more than 400k people.

bmoak  May 9, 2017 • 9:25:17pm

Since when is it the DNC’s role to fund mayoral elections? It never has been before. It certainly isn’t some huge umbrella organization responsible for all Dems at all levels everywhere. It’s always focused on national level elections, primarily Presidential ones, and certainly has nowhere near the funding, staffing, and capabilities that people (especially Berniebros) seem to think it has.

Fuck, I’m trying. I don’t even want ot have this argument again. My only problem was saying that Meoo = Kaine on abortion and I’ve found the voting records that disagree with that. I know Mello said he wouldn’t touch abortion if elected Mayor but can you blame pro-choice voters for being a little apprhensive about that given that he did have some votes in his record on that? That’s what was different from Kaine and that was my whole point in the first place. And TBH a lot of people did have that problem with Kaine but it was pointed out that as I said Kaine doesn’t have a record of restricting abortion access. And hoenstly I have to wonder how much DNC support would have made a difference here. You bring up that Dem Congressman, what you never bring up is that seat is historically quite Republican and that the Republicans were going to be gunning to get it back. IT sucks that the Dem lost but I’m tird of you acting like the party has infinite funds to use i nthese races because tehy simply don not.

YEah and then what happens when the Republican candidate uses all the moeny from the Democratic Party to accuse that person of being a rubber stamp for the “coastal elites.” You want it both ways, you want the party big wigs to focus on your area but you also want them to be able to distance themselves from the party elite while getting their funds. I don’t know what to tell you. I agree that Dems need to run people everywhere and at every level, but I’m not certain there’s actually a national level organization that’s truly responsible for that. It’s not the DNC. I don’t believe the RNC handles that for the Republicans. It’s generally the state level parties and organizations set up by crazy rich wingnuts 100. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be a priority for the extremely wealthy on the left and in the center to create similar structures, organization and finance these campaigns, just like they don’t see a need to found/buy media organizations to promote their views.
