Just found out Irish American writer J.P Donleavy died the other day. As a kid, I was an avid reader of his novels, though I had no idea what the hell he was going on about, but he made me laugh out loud and reminded me a whole lot of my equally sardonic grandfather Pat. Here’s to ya, boyo!
While I have you all here - we have some nifty new key commands for reading comments and up-dinging, down-dinging, seeing who up-dinged or down-dinged, and editing (if it’s your comment and it’s within the time limit).
To move to the next comment (starting with the first), type J. Previous comment: K. Typing these keys will instantly jump to the currently selected comment and position it at the top of the page.
As you move through the comments you’ll notice that the currently selected one has a green border.
Once a comment is selected and has the green border, you can up-ding by typing the = key, and down-ding by typing the - key.
I used = because I want to make this easy and not require the Shift key to type +.
To see the current ratings for a selected comment, type /. Again, I didn’t want to require Shift to type ?.
If it’s your comment and you still see the edit button with the cute little pencil, you can edit it by typing E.
Again - none of these key commands require holding the Shift key. Just type the letter or symbol.

This is your government on Trump.
I’ve concluded that we as a society are not capable of making a good judgement in cases where police kill people. I conclude that we need some way of discouraging police from shooting people that doesn’t involve after-the-fact judgement.
Accordingly, I suggest that any officer who shoots and kills any person immediately and permanently loses their job as a police officer. We’ll pay them while they train for another career, but not cop, not ever again. And it doesn’t matter whether the shooting was ‘good’ or not, because, again, society has shown we can’t reach an equitable verdict on that.
You may say, “But cops will hesitate to shoot when they feel endangered!”
GOOD! It’s about time something made them hesitate!
Right now, the only thing stopping a cop from shooting a black man is that he might feel bad about it afterwards. There seems to be no legal downside for shooting black men. It’s open season.
Sounds extreme? Well, it’s about the mildest thing I’ve come up with.

“…The Paris Agreement builds upon the Convention and - for the first time - brings all nations into a common cause to undertake ambitious efforts to combat climate change and adapt to its effects, with enhanced support to assist [pro-America] developing countries to do so. As such, it charts a new course in the global climate effort.
The Paris Agreement’s central aim is to strengthen the [pro-America] global response to the threat of climate change by keeping a [pro-America] global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Additionally, the agreement aims to strengthen the ability of [pro-America] countries to deal with the impacts of climate change. To reach these ambitious goals, appropriate [pro-America] financial flows, a new [pro-America] technology framework and an enhanced capacity [pro-America] building framework will be put in place, thus supporting action by [pro-America] developing countries and the most vulnerable [pro-America] countries, in line with their own [pro-America] national objectives. The Agreement also provides for enhanced transparency of [pro-America] action and support through a more robust [pro-America] transparency framework.”

re: #44 Targetpractice
The thing about it is each of them really made the role their own.
They have lots of material to choose from. Golden age, Silver age, and Bronze age Jokers were all very different characters.
Jack Nicholson was very golden age. Heath Ledger is the bronze age. I guess Caesar Romero would have been sort of silver age prankster.
Jared Leto…well

Nicholson was something of a casting coup for the role — a lot of his roles and professional persona were already Jokeresque. Randall McMurphy, Jack Torrance, Daryl Van Horne — he’d been playing Jokers for a few years already…
Also, I remember being really impressed with Ledger when I saw him in “10 Things I Hate About You” — it seemed like a cheesecake role, but he still brought a lot of substance and heart to the performance…

There’s a new study out, looking at the cost of developing cancer drugs. The researchers chose a number of small companies that each made one drug, and successfully got that drug to market, and averaged out what they’d each spent. They came up with, like $600 Million, vs the generally accepted $2.7 Billion cost.
Well, obviously, there are problems with the analysis. First, they STARTED with companies that had succeeded with their first and only attempt. They didn’t count all the companies that fail, and go out of business having never brought anything to market. I’ve worked for two of those. And they don’t consider that most companies try a lot of things that DON’T work for each thing that DOES.
But what really got me was the comments. There were a number along this line…
Well this should surprise no one. I’m a cynic…too much money being made in cancer treatment to ever accept an actual cure.
When challenged, the folks who post these all say, “I’m talking about the CEOs, not the Scientists. I trust the Scientists!”
Okay, let’s break this down, shall we?
A lot of cancers have pretty good cure rates these days, defined as disease free, 5 year survival. Stage 0 and Stage 1 Breast Cancer have about 100% 5 year survival (so get those mammos, ladies!), and guess what? A lot of that is drugs, specifically chemotherapy drugs. Which Pharma sells, and makes profits.
So, Pharma makes money curing cancer.
Next, this sort of thinking - ‘Pharma could cure cancer but instead only sells treatments’ - means that they think either companies HAVE cures they’re withholding, or that CEOs prevent researchers from working on them.
Hmmmm. So they’re saying that we Scientists, whose sincerity they trust, developed cures that we know the company is sitting on, but we don’t tell anyone, OR we KNOWINGLY only work on treatments when we COULD BE working on cures, but we also don’t tell anyone THAT, either. And we keep accepting paychecks.
Next, this line of thinking suggests that curing cancer must be really simple. My response is in two parts:
1. If it’s so easy, go ahead! Knock yourself out!!! Cure cancer!! I’ll wait.
2. Maybe trying to cure a disease composed entirely of your own cells, without killing you, is not really very easy.
Gosh all pumpkins, Mr. Wizard, but these people get my goat!!!

Trying to read Hillary’s book. It’s been a really long time since I read a non-fiction, non-CS book. Im 20 pages in and already pissed at Bernie as much as Trump, and Bernie isn’t even mentioned.
I also finally figured out what Bernie was: too many white men in the Democratic party thinking we needed to appeal to whites at the expense of minorities. But, like Trump in the Republican party, these leaders lost control of their creation when he should have conceded after Super Tuesday.

I always maintained that scientists would have to have far more knowledge than it is required to have a “cure” in order to make a “treatment” that basically strings the patient along indefinitely without curing it. That way, this would provide a steady supply of income for the pharmaceutical company in question.
In other words, bullshit.
Although, that was the plot of Johnny Mnemonic.

People have a hard time thinking of Pharma executives as regular everyday people who might be a little greedy. No, they have to be EEEEEEVILLLL!!!!
Basically, it’s the old “GM has a car that runs on WATER! but they won’t sell it because there’s more profit in gas-powered cars!” wheeze, but in healthcare.
The only EEEEVILL pharma execs are the ones who buy up patents for something they didn’t even develop and then jack the prices. e.g., Epi-Pen. or Shrekeli.
My problem with pharmaceutical companies are these me too drugs/clones/isomers.
Here are some examples from mental health from memory.
Celexa/Lexapro
Effexor/Pristiq
Risperdal/Invega
Abilify/Rexulti
In terms of effectiveness, there’s almost no difference. Complete money grab. I think the term “evergreening” is used.
There are exceptions, but not many.
One exception is the upcoming antidepressant esketamine, which is the enantiomer of ketamine. This will be a big deal because regular ketamine will never get approved for depression.

Unfortunately there’s always a kernel of truth that the conspiracy theorists latch onto and build around like an oyster with a grain of sand. Shkrelli did a lot to demonstrate the potential for harm a pure psychopath can cause within the system.

Continuing my point, GM did unethically kill the EV1 by lobbying California legislators to rescind the requirement for manufacturers to sell electric vehicles here. Myopic greed is causing real problems within our society, our markets and to our planet but the paranoid delusional conspiracies they spawn in the populace also prevents us from dealing with these issues constructively.

and I finally got around to reading it. The paragraph that really got to me…
Some time ago I went with my six-year-old nephew Matan to hunt for Pokémon. As we walked down the street, Matan kept looking at his smartphone, which enabled him to spot Pokémon all around us. I didn’t see any Pokémon at all, because I didn’t carry a smartphone. Then we saw two others kids on the street who were hunting the same Pokémon, and we almost got into a fight with them. It struck me how similar the situation was to the conflict between Jews and Muslims about the holy city of Jerusalem. When you look at the objective reality of Jerusalem, all you see are stones and buildings. There is no holiness anywhere. But when you look through the medium of smartbooks (such as the Bible and the Qur’an), you see holy places and angels everywhere.
I should note that those drug pairs, for those who don’t know, are each made by the same company. Basically, when the patent wears out on the former, presto, here comes the later.
It’s like Diet Pepsi vs Pepsi One.

Honestly it depends. Different drugs within the same class can have vastly different reactions and adverse events in different people, the human body is deeply weird. For instance, the first ACE inhibitor I took to control my high blood pressure was enalapril, which caused me to develop vicious psoriasis on the palms of my hands. On the other hand I tolerate lisinopril without a problem. Without going into specifics because it’s private someone close to me had a similar issue with Lyrica vs Neurontin, one caused undesirable psychoactive effects while the other didn’t.
re: #121 Blind Frog Belly White
I do empathize with people that have chronic conditions that can’t afford their medications. It is easier to blame a person than a system that needs fixing.
My problem for the longest time was the medication that I needed didn’t exist.
The other problem patients run into are when doctors prescribe “the new hotness” brand drug when the generic is just fine.
As a result, I look at drug representatives that drop free samples off at doctors offices as a combination of used car salesmen/women and ambulance chasers.

I can relate, and it’s not just civilian physicians.
When my epilepsy was first diagnosed, I was prescribed Dilantin, to which I was allergic.
The Navy kept prescribing every whizbang (patented) drug on the market, each of which I was allergic to. (I suffered from allergic reactions for the better part of a year thanks to that).
They finally settled on what in the USA is considered the “drug of last resort,” Phenobarbital. It was first brought to market in 1912, replacing the only drug available at the time potassium bromide (which makes a lot of people sick).
The World Health Organisation considers Phenobarbital an essential medication, as it is easy to store, cheap, is stable under a wide range of temperatures, and is the most effective (other than benzodiazaprines). The DEA on the other hand is Ohmygodhaironfire addictive put it on the drug schedules (never mind that Klonopin is as well - but that costs a bunch more).
Because infantile seizures are considered dangerous for infants, Phenobarbital is the first choice. Because it is cheap, it is considered the first choice for veterinarians for dogs and cats.
But children and adults? The last thing the combination of the DEA and whizbang drug sellers want is for you to be prescribed a drug that costs a pharmacist $7 for a thousand tablets (I asked my local pharmacist because he had to special order it for me once and I was concerned he would have no one else here to sell it to).
re: #128 goddamnedfrank
Well, I have no problem with drugs in the same class.
SSRI’s antidepressants:
Paxil, Prozac, Zoloft, etc
All significantly different.
Celexa is also an SSRI, so is Lexapro. Both made by the same company. That’s my issue. Chemically, they are almost the same darn thing.
Every once and a while you can run into an exception where there’s something noticeable.
From your personal example, enalapril and lisinopril are in the same class, and that is fine by me.
Another example are the second generation antipsychotics. Clozaril is the originator of that entire class. It’s the most effective one but the side effects are horrendous. So, new ones were made. Zyprexa, Seroquel, Risperdal, Abilify, etc. are all like Clozaril but different enough that there’s a noticeable difference between patients.
Rexulti is the new drug from the makers of Abilify. Abilify also grossed more money in the field of mental health than any drug before it, and it wasn’t even close. There’s no real difference between the two. If Abilify sucked balls for you, congrats, so will this for a whole lot more money. Insurance companies know this, which is why they don’t cover it well or at all.
With the Lyrica/Neurotin example, I’ll admit I don’t know about those two. I take anticonvulsants myself, but not those.

I’ve been “wasting” a year of my time working my way up on a combination of Depakote and Lamictal. The Lamictal is taking forever due to the fear of allergic reactions. Doctors freak out over any reaction to Lamictal due to SJS (Steven Johnson Syndrome).
It will have taken 8 months to get this drug up to where it needs to be because I have to titrate so slow.

Right-wing evangelicals are supremely hypocritical about their support as well; just think back to everything they used to say about Bill Clinton (when they were insisting that a man’s sexual behavior and treatment of his wife was absolutely the most important factor in judging his trustworthiness or fitness for office)…
They think we don’t notice that all they really care about is which judges are appointed to the federal courts. Every single other piece of policy, every single other belief, action, or statement by a President is totally irrelevant to their support or opposition.

Back to the OT for a minute - Ron Rosenbaum at Slate thinks ‘Choctaw Bingo’ should be the new national anthem.
Seriously. It’s time to retire ol’ Francis Scott Key’s “The Star-Spangled Banner” and go with a song that more truly represents the America of today: post-crash, pre-apocalypse, meth- and money-addicted, heading down the highway to self-destruction.
[…]
But he’s got the talent for it. And he’s a prophet, too. He was writing songs about subprime mortgages and meth-crazed good ol’ boys back in 2002, when he released “Choctaw Bingo,” the best of these. The song is my candidate for new American anthem, a national anthem for the crash, because it captures a culture where addiction to meth and addiction to money are indistinguishable in their frenzy and their ruination. Vice versa and vice worser. If you don’t hear it the first time you hear “Choctaw Bingo,” you’ve spent too much time on the coasts and not enough in the off-the-grid, flown-over locales.
How shall I describe “Choctaw Bingo”? It’s about a family reunion in heavy meth country convened by mean old “Uncle Slayton,” who’s a kind of malignant Uncle Sam figure for the assembled family members.
Good article.

He’s trying to show that he’s a tough guy, that HIS sanctions (the only tool we have and everyone knows it) are having an effect where other rounds of sanctions didn’t. And it doesn’t matter that we all know it is bullshit bluster, because the people it is intended for will lap it up.

The standard counter arguments are “You are a racist for bringing up the topic of race.”
or “If you are going to call me a racist for (fill in blank here) then, yeah, I am a racist!”
and others will insist that they are simply “racial realists” and based their views of (dubious and disputed) scientific evidence.
And they will all tell you that they have at least one black friend.
I personally am hesitant to use the term “racist” because it has turned into little more than a trigger word for a shouting match.

That drives me up the wall.
I’m building a web site for a restaurant outside Philly, and they sent me the Happy Hour menu the other day to convert to PDF. The menu mentioned specials on ‘martini’s’ and ‘$2 off personal pizza’s,’ so I corrected them, made the PDF and put it on the site and emailed my contact person to take a look.
She emailed me back to tell me that ‘pizzas’ and ‘martinis’ were spelled wrong!
And to make matters even worse, the bit about ‘$3 bottled beers’ seemed to be exempt from the apostrophe. Annoying.

As an aside, it drives me buggy when they depict archers drawing en masse and holding for long periods, then the commander yells ‘Fire!’
That ain’t how you shoot a warbow.
And as we say, a fully drawn selfbow is 7/8 broken. Draw a 150lb bow and hold for a long time, and it ain’t 150 lb anymore. Keep doing that and it will be less and less.

The thing with its and it’s is that to NOT put in the apostrophe violates the rule. But that’s English for you - I before E, except after C, or in a bunch of other more or less random words.

re: #41 Blind Frog Belly White
This is an interesting idea, but actual shooting is just like, the far end of the spectrum when it comes to the abuse of authority. Rodney King didn’t get shot. The nurse who was arrested for not drawing blood from the police chase victim, the old lady knocked down in STL, all of that was done w/o shooting, and it is all part of the mindset. It starts in the legialature and the city council, not the academy, and the laws put in place to encourage disdain towards citizens.
Sources tell me Dina Powell is also anxious about it but she’s stopping so many worse things happening that she’s staying put in her job.

They took its toy and it’s mad.

Right, but in every OTHER word where we add “s” to make it possessive, we use an apostrophe. Thus, ‘its’ violates that rule.

Sam I am.
