Even so, the Bergdahl decision is just and reasonable and Trump’s comments criticizing that decision are outrageous, beyond the pale. They would have been unimaginable before the Rancid One took office.
A dishonorable discharge is no small thing. It cuts Bergdahl off from most benefits or federal employment, and from many civilian employment opportunities. The main consideration though is that he has already been imprisoned, by the Taliban, for five years. During that time, he had to be aware that he could be beheaded on a whim, any time the Talib leaders decided they needed to make a point. That he was a favored captive made no difference, he was an American and that was enough to make him a candidate for the chop. Throwing him in federal prison on top of that would be pointless, redundant and cruel.

I wish our language was as wonderfully versatile as say German and Spanish. My SiL and her family like to tease my brother on how poor his Spanish is but they do appreciate that he tries. It was really cool because his brother in law was with at a baseball game. He’s from El Salvador so my Dad who speaks some Spanish asked him if he could tell us where the Spanish speakers in front of us were from. He picked up on that they were likely Dominican or Puerto Rican based on their slang and all that and how they were making little bets on everything going on during the game. Well because we were all there rooting for the Orioles. We all became friends quickly.

There probably is.
I would not bet my freedom on Donny Trump.
If he goes down in an actual impeachment or is charged criminally he will think all those around him screwed him over and they were responsible for it all. So, no pardons…everyone for themselves.
Heck, he might even toss some of them to the wolves himself and tell the Feds what everyone did and how they all told Donny he could get away with it.
There is no personal responsibility in Donny, but there is a lot of spite and payback.

True, fuck for example very versatile. What I love about German though is how there seems to be a word for everything. My favorite being the punchable face. Language is great.

There is a substantial amount of data on divorce and religion.
Divorce Rates for Atheists Are Among the Lowest in America
Still tricky. What about people who live together without being married? Those breakups are not registered as divorces. Religious folks probably less likely to do so.
Still, stats indicate that religious affiliation does not make marriage/life partnership considerably more or less stable, long-lasting or “sanctified”

re: #90 mmmirele
I have been trying to improve my Spanish, which in some wsys is really good an in others, downright horrible. So I thought I would see what Maduro, the leader of Venezuela, was up to on Twitter. It turns out he was being criticized for pulling an empanada out of a desk drawer and eating it on TV while so many Venezuelans are going hungry.
This verb form threw me for a loop:
atapuzándose
It turns out it’s a colloquial verb form used mainly in Venezuela, and Maduro wasn’t merely eating the empanada, he was stuffing his face with it.
I’m probably never going to have the opportunity to use atapuzárse in any real conversation, but I will probably never forget it.
It’s not a unique verb form—it’s the gerund (with a reflexive pronoun). The infinitive verb is atapuzar. Esta atapuzandose—stuffing himself.

Jew-bashing Georgia candidate says ‘at least Nazis contributed to US society’
Georgia city council candidate this week was forced to defend a series of anti-Semitic tweets, including a declaration that “at least the Nazis assimilated and contributed to US society,” the Atlantic-Journal Constitution reports.
The tweets from Suwanee City Council candidate Joe Briggs resurfaced in recent days, including posts comparing Jews to Nazis and referring to Zionists as “cockroaches.”
“CNN is run by white supremacists,” Briggs tweeted in August after CNN fired former commentator Jeffrey Lord for tweeting “Sieg Heil!” at the president of Media Matters. “Zionists in Israel far worse than anything described in Mein Kampf. Get over it,” Briggs added.

“If one document from the Clinton emails was altered, it stands to reason that others may have been as well. After all, releasing tainted leaks would hardly be a new practice for Russian hackers.
In 2017 researchers at the Citizen Lab group released a study indicating that Russian hackers have a pattern of tampering with documents leaked by its hackers to serve the purposes of its propaganda.
“This report describes an extensive Russia-linked phishing and disinformation campaign,” the authors wrote. “It provides evidence of how documents stolen from a prominent journalist and critic of Russia was tampered with and then ‘leaked’ to achieve specific propaganda aims. We name this technique ‘tainted leaks.’”
The authors added, “The report illustrates how the twin strategies of phishing and tainted leaks are sometimes used in combination to infiltrate civil society targets, and to seed mistrust and disinformation. It also illustrates how domestic considerations, specifically concerns about regime security, can motivate espionage operations, particularly those targeting civil society.”

And you know what, a lot of people on the left were happy to spread Greenwald and the Kremlin’s bullshit because they could not accept that Hillary Rodham Clinton was more popular with voters than Bernie Sanders. And we’re still fighting this thanks to Brazile’s dishonesty from yesterday and Warren’s cynical attempt to court the BBs for her own likely run in 2020.
Update from Louisiana: Maybe Derrick Edwards has a better chance than most people think. From the former executive director of the LA GOP, Jeff Crouere:
CROUERE: Well, if New Orleans has a bigger turnout than we expect, the estimates I’m hearing are 30% 31, 32% maybe more roughly what I’ve been hearing, Then you have the possibility that this thing could be getting even closer because there would be a differential of maybe 30 points between New Orleans turn out and what we can see statewide.
So I think that’s what has John Schroeder a little bit concerned. I think he’s really trying to hit his base. He’s coming on my program, he’s going to be doing various talk shows—just to remind people that he needs to get out the vote on the 18th.
Vote for Derrick Edwards. Early voting under way now, Election Day is November 18.

I am curious as to who they think Brazile’s natural audience is for this book?
I consider myself a staunch liberal but A) I don’t have a problem with Democrats choosing the direction their party goes in, B) I have more appreciation for someone like Clinton who has being in all 50 states to campaign for Democrats of varying ideological stripes over someone like Sanders whom until last year had never campaigned for anyone other than himself, and C) I sincerely think Clinton is just as if not more progressive than Sanders in many ways, and D) I have no problem declaring myself not a fan of Bernie Sanders.

I haven’t a clue. I think some Dem operatives like Donna and some elected officials like Senator Warren see that he did garner a good amount of support last year and think we should go after those voters. And you know what, I understand but the way to do that is issues orientated not pandering to the fantasies some of them have that the DNC stole the nomination from Sanders through illegal or otherwise nefarious means. I am actually sympathetic to a lot of what Sanders stands for, not everything but a fair amount but where he has lost me big time is how insensitive he is on racial and gender issues.

That would explain the audience for a Sanders book (although both of his fell well short of bestseller status). It doesn’t explain the audience for a Donna Brazile book, since most Sandbaggers wouldn’t know who she is and most who would know regarded her as an enemy until she spun her lies.

I dunno honestly. Maybe she thinks by getting on Sanders good side, he’ll make her part of his team should he run in 2020. To be honest, after learning more about him, I really did not see what all the fuss was about. I’m thoroughly unimpressed with Sanders as a politician. I was stunned seeing how little he’s gotten accomplished but the more I’ve seen with him since last January I can see why. I also have seen why so few elected officials endorsed him and most of the people who did endorse him were idealistic celebrities.

I am not a believer but I have friends who are, of several different religions, and all of them are appalled by many of their co-religionists. Some days I don’t like people much. Except you of course.
I hate it when the obnoxious militant atheist is also a cyclist.

Actually I had that vibe through RS. He just I dunno had a self righteous vibe to him ya know? I used to feel that way about Olbermann and I still kinda do. Now Ed Schultz, that’s someone I never liked or trusted and now he’s the resident “progressive” on RT since msnbc fired him for being a jackass.

He’s actually someone because we’re both sports fans that I do like hearing from but he had an obnoxious vibe. He’s gotten better because yeah the times we’re in. Now as for liberal talking heads and comics I do like, I’ve always liked Jon Stewart. Stephen Colbert also. I’m also fond of Patton Oswald. Not only funny but I have a minor personal connection since my two cousins attended high school with him. One being older than Patton, the other being younger. Can We Please Stop Talking About ‘Collusion’?
nytimes.com
Mr. Trump and his inner circle have benefited enormously from this coalescing around the word “collusion” — a term with a legalistic feel but with close to “no legal meaning whatsoever” said Renato Mariotti, a former federal prosecutor and now a defense lawyer who has written a dissection of every public statement that a Trump associate has made to congressional investigators. If we care about the law — and about holding public figures accountable for their false denials — the impassioned disavowals of collusion by members of the Trump circle mean nothing. Donald Trump Jr.’s utterances to Congress, for example, were “not denying that he committed a crime,” Mr. Mariotti said. “Whether his denial is broader or more narrow than that depends on what exactly is meant by ‘collude’ in this statement — which we don’t know.”
re: #236 GlutenFreeJesus
But no middle aged white dude was afraid of persecution after Vegas. Oh, bask in that privilege!
No kidding. This sucks. No group should have to go through this. And this is what privilege is. Not even thinking that Uzbek-Americans may be going through this following a terrorist attack. After Elliott Rodger, on the specturm like myself shot those people. I expressed some feelings of sort of guilt of having also been on the spectrum. People were right to tell me not to feel bad because “You’re not like that. Not every Aspie is like that.” Well yeah they’re right but we should extend that same kindness to Muslims after something like this. Frigging Laura Loomer shouldn’t be taking pictures of strangers and posting them on her Twitter claiming that Muslims are “rubbing” in the terrorist attack. The Taliban was terrorizing Shi’a Muslims like a high school classmate of mine when people like Republican and Putin Apologist Dana Rohbarcher were praising them to the Western press.

You know when I saw that photo of Paddock with his eyes closed, he honestly kind of reminded me a little of my Dad. Hell Paddock was close to my Dad’s age too. And I guess that’s the thing isn’t it? White guy does a mass shooting like Paddock does and our media doesn’t critique “white culture.” FNC isn’t having a panel to tell white people they need to stop committing violence. No, we just look for ways to see these guys as outliers in our demographic. The most disturbingly honest thing I saw after Vegas was FNC stumped trying to find ways to hate Paddock. They really would have found it that much easier to hate Paddock if he had looked different than them. That he committed the worst single shooter mass shooting in U.S. history was immaterial.

I’ve heard several people say something sobering about the DNC thing that has to be mentioned for the sake of honesty: Pres. He was confirmed. We also saw his name as a possibility for AG after Eric Holder stepped down too and he was even on the long list for HRC running mates. In short, Perez is a progressive bonafide. But the Bros hate him with the pasison of a thousand suns.

Money infiltrates EVERY last thing in the United States - in politics more than anything else. Every member of the house of reps seems to spend all his/her time fundraising & legislating comes a poor second. Senators have to retire if they say what they really believe about this president* because there will be $$$$ fighting them in the primaries. Until this is sorted US politics will never be the leading light of democracy that so many like to claim that it is.

Remember DFAaction pulling “direct aid” from Northam over his sanctuary cities remarks? They’re doubling down:
Per the statement, DFA never endorsed Northam, but provided aid as a part of grassroots activities to engage voters “up and down the ballot.” In its statement, DFA further explained that for the past several weeks there had already been issues concerning the Northam campaign’s treatment of Lieutenant Governor candidate Justin Fairfax. Northam’s recent statement was the last straw. DFA did what Democrats ought to do, stand against political gamesmanship and throwing constituencies under the bus.
So…yeah. What’s this “treatment” of Justin Fairfax they’re referring to? Is Northam seriously stupid enough to think he’ll win a portion of the knuckle-dragger-racist vote? o_O

I’m no communist or even a socialist but I’d like to see someone talk about how labor makes this all possible. It’s one thing to create jobs. It’s another to actually do those jobs.
There is a massive difference between socialism and communism (as we have seen it in operation). I believe in looking after people (after they are born), having safety nets, affordable health care, a place to live and a living wage. I think the unemployed should be supported by government, not having to depend on charity for their next meal. If this is socialism, I am a socialist.
As far as creating jobs, at the current point in time, most of those job creators are inventing ways to produce more with fewer and fewer people. This is not job creation - this is profit making. When I studied economics at university, companies consisted of capital, labor and property. Now someone else owns the property, CEOs & board members get most of the capital and the labor part is considered a necessary evil - or reduced to the level where those employed have no chance of doing the job they are expected to do.

The Labor Theory of Value does this though we dare not even whisper it since it is associated with Marx & his analysis of Capital. The irony of course is that he was building on the ideas of Adam Smith and David Ricardo. Only with labor, in a social context, can value be created. It can then be traded for many things and that’s where the confusion comes from but it’s creation is simple: “the economic value of a good or service is determined by the total amount of socially necessary labor required to produce it, rather than by the use or pleasure its owner gets from it.”

I haven’t a clue honestly. I’m going out to campaign tomorrow morning though. I mean I’m frustrated at how Northam handled the S-Cities question too but at the same time, we have to defeat Gillespie-Vogel-Adams. You guys may not know Adams by name but he’s actually the Hobby Lobby attorney. He really has some nerve whining about how AG Herring has “politicized” the office after Cuccinnelli used the AG’s office to harass climate change believers in academia.

Not much multi tasking with this lot - he’ll probably discuss the benefits of reducing taxes throughout his Asia tour.
What I wish Northam would have said would be this, “Ed needs to listen to the police chiefs of larger cities who contend that sanitcuary cities foster better relationships between immigrant communities and law enforcement and reduce crime. ” This still is a fairly conservative state though unfortunately. Remember, Cuccinnelli still did nearly win here a couple years ago. We’re becoming almost light blue but we still have Republicans controlling the state legislature.

I’ve been saying for a while that there are several things that we need to do.
First, we need to redefine the work week, like we did 80 years ago. The work week needs to have fewer hours, because we have more workers than work, at 40 hrs/week.
Second, we need to reduce the fixed cost of employment, because the threshold for hiring people is too high, and because health insurance tied to employment ties people to jobs. Single payer healthcare would do that nicely.
Third, we need to tax the holy fuck out of wealth accumulation.
Fourth, we need to remember that DEMAND is what creates jobs. Not ‘investment’. Demand.

Indeed if Ralph wins, it will be because he got our diverse areas out to vote for him not by pandering to fragility as you say. The big reason why I preferred Perriello this spring over Ralph is because I think Tom got that more. Ralph’s a decent guy, a good public servant but I really think Tom was the better choice because he understood where our state’s going. That said, we are where we are.

I’m not exactly fond of some aspects of Northam’s strategy, but I think DFAaction is ultimately undermining their own objectives with their handling of this. A significant fraction of the people who end up not voting for Northam are going to end up not voting at all which will impact all the races statewide. They knock Northam down 3%, that’s going to knock all the other statewide races and local races down 1-3%. depending how many people just decide to sit home. That means that a lot of DFAaction’s get out the vote efforts are just going to go into overcoming the hole that was dug here and that’s a great disservices to Fairfax and all the great candidates in down ballot races. Even if Northam pulls this out, there are going to probably be a few Democratic candidates who ultimately lose by a couple percentage point and you’ll have to wonder whether if no for this they win those close races. Worst case scenario is Gellespie win’s and all the voter registration efforts done are for naught as they are more than overcome by gerrymandering and vote suppression efforts.
re: #339 TedStriker
RCP has Northam still up 2.8% over the period 10/12 to today in their average.
Rasmussen being a tie is good. What does concern me and this is why Gillespie is a snake is that Gillespie has the Republican base starting to solidify behind him in a way they weren’t earlier in the year. But by pandering to their racism, he’s gotten them to trust him in a way they hadn’t before. That may be why while we thought Northam would win big earlier in the year was a false hope because there was no way that they would stay home and let a Democrat take the office. I think Northam wins in a typically close Virginia race.

I said, Trump is talking like he is getting his $5.5 Trillion tax cut - you know, the one that gives everthing to everyone? - which might just increase economic activity by enough to make up the $1.5 Trillion the actual bill will cost. But it wouldn’t cover the $5.5 Trillion, and the $1.5 Trillion cut won’t increase activity enough to cover itself, because it mostly goes to people who already have plenty of money and will just throw the new money on the pile.

I’ll level with y’all. I knew what MS-13 when Ed Gillespie was being a good foot soldier for GWB. I have never felt scared or intimated by El Salvadorians at all. In fact, my SiL’s older sister is married to an El Salvadorian guy who is one of the greatest guys I know. He treats my niece like she’s his blood relative. Family really matters to Hispanics. But anyhow, I digress, the point is Virginia isn’t the crime soaked hell hole that Trump and Gillespie have been making it to be. Does something need to be done about gangs like MS-13? Sure. But we also need to do something about one of our state’s most beautiful towns, Charlottesville becoming the meeting point for a bunch of Nazi fucks who run over people they don’t like with cars.

Bernie, for all his vaunted socialism, really isn’t. He would be to the right of most European social democrats and I have serious problems with what I consider to be his racism. He’s the political equivalent of Chomsky - an annoying old ass who’s small bit of real accomplishment was decades ago and he’s been coasting on reputation ever since.
The next problem is which < airquotes > hard left? < /airquotes > Every little group has a different spin on the ideology that can seem insignificant to an outsider but has caused murders between real world groups. They can range from Maoist groups running into the mountains to force the peasants to support their liberation (cough, cough) to more democratic groups like the American DSA that tries to work with the established Democratic party to make serious social welfare reform since American voters are terrified of the socialist label (which would have killed Bernie since that’s all the GOFascists would have had to do is scream socialist and Trump would have had twice the vote total as he did get. )

Whatever happens, it guarantees that Corey Stewart runs against Kaine next year. If Gillespie loses, it’s “proof” Corey was right about the GOP establishment and they’re weak. If he wins, it’s riding in on a “GOP renaissance” in Virginia. Now I think Kaine can beat Stewart but I also greatly underestimated Gillespie when he ran against Mark Warner three years ago. He’s a sleazy son of a bitch but as someone who has been a foot soldier in party politics, he knows how to compete.

It’s as if the Democratic Party establishment has no clue whatsoever on who or what their base is (while the GOP knows theirs all too well). It seems to me that the Dems are constantly torn between:
- POCs and other historically marginalized minority groups
- the infamous and elusive WWC
- “moderate” GOPers and right-leaning independents
- their biggest donors
I wish they could get it through their heads that, thanks to rightwing cult media, the 3rd group is lost forever, and any attempt to pander to them will alienate almost everyone else. The first group is by far the most loyal, and *some* of the second group (the ones who haven’t gone full-white-supremacist) could possibly be won over by a clear and forceful messaging campaign that essentially says, “Look you morons, policies that benefit POCs help you too!”
As for the donor group…mixed bag. They have to thread the needle between their interests and potentially alienating the “little guy.” Then again, some billionaires support progressive economics as well…

Well Ed, I’m sure your father would be disgusted to see what you do to other children of immigrants in your search for power..
When there’s stories about racial minority children being bullied being told “Hey you have to leave this country now.” When a sick Hispanic girl is detained by ICE. Yeah, I ain’t bothered by some ad. What frustrates me is we don’t appreciate how loyal Group A is. They stayed with the party when much of the country was buying Nixon and Reagan’s bullshit but not PoC. They saw through that and they were right.
Honestly after Gillespie’s people channeld H.W Bush and the Willie Horton ad, they deserved that ad to be thrown back at them. In fact, I wish Dukakis’s team in 1988 had fought back with the same fervor. We’re always saying Democrats need to stand for something. Well we did with that ad. We stand with people who want to live the American Dream without fear of some opportunist asshole like Gillespie or Trump deporting them to appease a racist base.
re: #346 goddamnedfrank
Races tighten towards the close and we all saw how much the Comey tape moved opinion in the final days of the 2016 election. Northam and DFA are both to blame for this shit show.

He really did screw it up. I like Ralph a lot but he fucked up there. He played right into Gillespie’s stupid game.
The thing that keeps me in fits with the Democratic Party these days is that with Lord Dampnut fucking the country and the world up right now, we have to have a united front to oppose him and his policies (as they were) and to keep up the pressure; aside from Mueller’s non-partisan investigation homing in on Trump, that’s not really happening like it should, especially not from the media. From the perpetual Hillary hate that’s really unfounded in reality, even from those in her own party, and all of the other shit, like Berniacs still raging, the recent Northam complications, or any one of a number of problems nationwide, it really is a fucking circular firing squad; it seems that some putative Dems/”liberals”/”progressives” would rather lose and stay in the current political wilderness, just so they can fucking bitch incessantly and play at being the “resistance”.
I think that most people that give a shit about this country like we do still don’t understand, even after the clusterfuck of the past year: the GOP have to be lucky *just enough* to get what they want, but the Democrats basically have to be lucky every time, just to keep things from getting even worse.

It is so frustrating. As I said earlier, I’ve read about children who get bullied because they look different and this is why the Bros piss me off, and they want us to appease their purity over a man who isn’t even in our party? Pardon my language here but fuck that shit.
